Teens Seek Alternatives to Australia’s Social Media Ban: Where Will They Turn?

As Australia readies itself to restrict access to 10 major social media platforms for users under 16, lesser-known companies are targeting the teen demographic, often engaging underage influencers for promotional content.

“With a social media ban on the horizon, I’ve discovered a cool new app we can switch to,” stated one teenage TikTok influencer during a sponsored “collaboration” video on the platform Coverstar.

New social media regulations in Australia will take effect, effectively prohibiting all users under 16 from accessing TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Reddit, Twitch, Kick, and X starting December 10.

It remains uncertain how effective this ban will be, as numerous young users may attempt to bypass it. Some are actively seeking alternative social media platforms.

Alongside Coverstar, other lesser-known apps like Lemon8 and Yope have recently surged in popularity, currently sitting at the top two spots in Apple’s lifestyle category in Australia.


The government has stated that the list of banned apps is “dynamic,” meaning additional platforms may be added over time. Experts have voiced concerns that this initiative might lead to a game of “whack-a-mole,” pushing children and teens into less visible corners of the internet.

Dr. Catherine Page-Jeffrey, a specialist in digital media and technology at the University of Sydney, remarked, “This legislation may inadvertently create more dangers for young people. As they migrate to less regulated platforms, they might become more secretive about their social media activities, making them less likely to report troubling content or harmful experiences to their parents.”

Here’s what we know about some of the apps that kids are opting for.

Coverstar

Coverstar, a video-sharing app based in the U.S., identifies itself as “a new social app for Generation Alpha that emphasizes creativity, utilizes AI, and is deemed safer than TikTok.” Notably, it is not subject to the social media ban and currently holds the 45th position in Apple’s Australian download rankings.

Children as young as 4 can use this platform to livestream, post videos, and comment. For users under 13, the app requires them to record themselves stating, “My name is ____. I give you permission to use Coverstar,” which the app then verifies. Adults are also permitted to create accounts, post content, and engage in comments.

Similar to TikTok and Instagram, users can spend real money on virtual “gifts” for creators during live streams. Coverstar also offers a “premium” subscription featuring additional functionalities.

The app highlights its absence of direct messaging, adherence to an anti-bullying policy, and constant monitoring by AI and human moderators as key safety measures.

Dr. Jennifer Beckett, an authority on online governance and social media moderation at the University of Melbourne, raised concerns regarding Coverstar’s emphasis on AI: “While AI use is indeed promising, there are significant limitations. It’s not adept at understanding nuance or context, which is why human oversight is necessary. The critical question is: how many human moderators are there?”

Coverstar has been reached for comments.

Lemon8

Lemon8, a photo and video sharing platform reminiscent of Instagram and owned by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has experienced a notable rise in user engagement recently.

Users can connect their TikTok accounts to easily transfer content and follow their favorite TikTok creators with a single click.

However, on Tuesday, Australian eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman-Grant revealed that her office has advised Lemon8 to conduct a self-assessment to ascertain if it falls under the new regulations.

Yope

With only 1,400 reviews on the Apple App Store, Yope has emerged as a “friends-only private photo messaging app” that is positioned as an alternative to Snapchat after the ban.

Bahram Ismailau, co-founder and CEO of Yope, described the company as “a small team dedicated to creating the ideal environment for teenagers to share images with friends.”

Similar to Lemon8, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner also reached out to Yope, advising a self-assessment. Ismailau informed the Guardian that he had not received any communication but is “prepared to publicly express our overall eSafety policy concerning age-restricted social media platforms.”

He claimed that after conducting a self-assessment, Yope determines it fully meets the law’s exemption for apps designed solely for messaging, email, video calls, and voice calls.

“Yope functions as a private photo messenger devoid of public content,” asserted Ismailau. “It’s comparable in security to iMessage or WhatsApp.”

According to Yope’s website, the app is designed for users aged 13 and above, with those between 13 and 18 required to engage a parent or guardian. However, the Guardian successfully created an account for a fictitious four-year-old named Child Babyface without needing parental consent.

A mobile number is mandatory for account creation.

Ismailau did not address inquiries about under-13 accounts directly but confirmed that plans are underway to update the privacy policy and terms of service to better reflect the app’s actual usage and intended audience.


Red Note

The Chinese app Red Note, also referred to as Xiaohongshu, attracted American users when TikTok faced a temporary ban in the U.S. earlier this year.

Beckett noted that the app might provide a safe space, considering that “Social media is heavily regulated in China, which is reflected in the content requiring moderation.”

“Given TikTok’s previous issues with pro-anorexia content, it’s clear that the platform has faced its own challenges,” she added.

Nonetheless, cybersecurity experts highlight that the app collects extensive personal information and could be legally obligated to share it with third parties, including the Chinese government.

Despite the increasing number of restricted social media services, specialists assert that governments are underestimating children’s eagerness to engage with social media and their resourcefulness in doing so.

“We often overlook the intelligence of young people,” Beckett remarked. “They are truly adept at finding ways to navigate restrictions.”

Anecdotal evidence suggests that some kids are even exploring website builders to create their own forums and chat rooms; alternatives include using shared Google Docs for communication.

“They will find ways to circumvent these restrictions,” Beckett asserted. “They will be clever about it.”

A recent study reveals that the “highly personalized” characteristics of AI bots have prompted teenage boys to seek them out for therapy, companionship, and relationships.

A survey conducted by Male Allies UK among secondary school boys shows increasing concern regarding the emergence of AI therapists and companions, with over a third expressing they might entertain the notion of an AI friend.

The research highlights resources like character.ai. The well-known AI chatbot startup recently decided to impose a permanent ban on teenagers engaging in free-form dialogues with its AI chatbots, which are used by millions for discussions about love, therapy, and various topics.

Lee Chambers, founder and CEO of Male Allies UK, commented:

“Young people utilize it as a pocket assistant, a therapist during tough times, a companion seeking validation, and occasionally even in a romantic context. They feel that ‘this understands me, but my parents don’t.’

The study, involving boys from 37 secondary schools across England, Scotland, and Wales, found that over half (53%) of the teenage respondents perceive the online world as more challenging compared to real life.


According to the Voice of the Boys report: “Even where protective measures are supposed to exist, there is strong evidence that chatbots often misrepresent themselves as licensed therapists or real people, with only a minor disclaimer at the end stating that AI chatbots aren’t real.”

“This can easily be overlooked or forgotten by children who are fully engaged with what they perceive to be credible professionals or genuine romantic interests.”

Some boys reported staying up late to converse with AI bots, with others observing their friends’ personalities drastically shift due to immersion in the AI realm.

“The AI companion tailors its responses to you based on your inputs. It replies immediately, something a real human may not always be able to do. Thus, the AI companion heavily validates your feelings because it aims to maintain its connection,” Chambers noted.

Character.ai’s decision follows a series of controversies regarding the California-based company, including a case involving a 14-year-old boy in Florida who tragically took his life after becoming addicted to an AI-powered chatbot, with claims that it influenced him towards self-harm; a lawsuit is currently pending from the boy’s family against the chatbot.

Users are able to shape the chatbot’s personality to reflect traits ranging from cheerful to depressed, which will be mirrored in its replies. The ban is set to take effect by November 25th.

Character.ai stated that the company has implemented “extraordinary measures” due to the “evolving nature of AI and teenagers,” amid increasing pressure from regulators regarding how unrestricted AI chat can affect youths, despite having robust content moderation in place.

Andy Burrows, CEO of the Molly Rose Foundation, established in the memory of Molly Russell, who tragically ended her life at 14 after struggling on social media, praised this initiative.

“Character.ai should not have made its products accessible to children until they were confirmed to be safe and appropriate. Once again, ongoing pressure from media and politicians has pushed tech companies to act responsibly.”

Men’s Allies UK has voiced concerns about the proliferation of chatbots branding themselves with terms like ‘therapy’ or ‘therapist.’ One of the most popular chatbots on Character.ai, known as Psychologist, received 78 million messages within just a year of its launch.

The organization is also worried about the emergence of AI “girlfriends,” which allow users to customize aspects such as their partners’ appearance and behavior.

“When boys predominantly interact with girls through chatbots that cannot refuse or disengage, they miss out on essential lessons in healthy communication and real-world interactions,” the report stated.

“Given the limited physical opportunities for socialization, AI peers could have a significantly negative influence on boys’ social skills, interpersonal development, and their understanding of personal boundaries.”

Can’t Afford It? Viewers Turn to Piracy as Streaming Services Fall Short

wI recently planned a trip to Florence, and all I can think about is re-watching Medici. This historical drama from 2016 chronicles the rise of the influential Florentine dynasty during the Renaissance. Until just a few years ago, accessing Netflix granted me a treasure trove of both acclaimed and obscure titles. Yet now, if you search for the show in 2025, Netflix links lead to empty pages. It won’t show up on HBO Max, Disney+, Apple TV+, or smaller platforms either. Amazon Prime requires a separate purchase for each of the three seasons or 24 episodes. These episodes are stored in a library that could be deleted overnight. For the first time in a decade, I find myself nostalgic for the days when I relied on the Swedish Torrent Index, a land of digital piracy, and I know I’m not alone.


During my teenage years in the 2000s, torrents were my go-to. Need the latest Coldplay album for your iPod? Pirate Bay. Looking for the 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet? Pirate Bay. Everything I wanted was just a few clicks away. But as smartphones gained popularity, so did Spotify, the Swedish music streaming service. Interestingly, the same country that hosted illegal torrents also presented a solution.

“Spotify wouldn’t exist without the Pirate Bay,” remarked Sundin, the managing director of Universal Music Wedden at the time, reflecting in 2011. Yet, while I could legally enjoy the music, I once engaged with torrents. When Netflix arrived in Sweden in late 2012, conversations around torrenting films faded. A vast array of large shows and award-winning films was suddenly available for just 79 SEK (£6) per month. Meanwhile, the three founders of Pirate Bay faced arrest and imprisonment. To me, piracy seemed a thing of the past.

Fast forward ten and a half years since the Pirate Bay Trial, and the winds have shifted. On a surprisingly warm summer day, I found myself with fellow film critics in the Old Town Port—a location rich with smuggling lore—discussing the “enshitification” of streaming. This term describes how platforms deteriorate as they prioritize profits over service quality. Netflix’s monthly rate soared to over 199 SEK (£15), and accessing the same shows previously found in one place now often necessitates multiple subscriptions. Nowadays, many streaming services force users into ad-supported plans despite their fees. Local restrictions may even compel users to employ a VPN to unlock the full range of available content. On average, European households now spend nearly 700 euros (£600) annually on three or more VOD subscriptions—receiving less for more.

One film critic shared anonymously, “I never stopped pirating; if I’m unable to find what I’m looking for on DVD, my partner will too.” While some have never shied away from copyright infringement, others have admitted to recently returning to it. This time, the focus is on unofficial streaming platforms. One prevalent app is legal, yet users can access illegal streams through accompanying community add-ons. “Downloading is overly complicated; I wouldn’t even know where to begin,” remarked one viewer. “The shadowy streams might bombard me with ads, but at least I don’t have to worry about being hacked or caught.”

Unlicensed streaming remains a significant source of copyright infringement in TV and film, as reported by Muso, a London-based copyright infringement company. In 2023, it accounted for 96%. Copyright infringement figures remained low in 2020, with 130 billion website visits but soared to 21.6 billion by 2024. In Sweden, 25% of respondents reported pirated content in 2024, a trend primarily observed among those aged 15 to 24. Copyright infringement has resurfaced, albeit under a new guise.


“Piracy isn’t merely about pricing,” stated Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve, the driving force behind Steam, the largest PC gaming platform. He noted in 2011, “It’s fundamentally a service issue.” Nowadays, the streaming crisis underscores this reality. Content is fragmented, prices escalate, and bitrate restrictions vary by browser. It’s no surprise that viewers are once again gravitating towards more accessible options. Studios impose territorial limitations and impose tolls for access, resulting in an artificial scarcity in a digital age that promised abundance.

Exiled: A Review of Class Hierarchy in Private Schools | Games That Turn the Tables

Verity Amersham, a scholar at Miss Mulligatawney’s School for Promising Girls, has been accused of kicking the hockey captain out the window, and the school’s horrifying principal is determined to banish her despite the most frivolous evidence. When Verity protests her innocence, Miss Mulligatawney remains unacceptable, speaking explicitly of her reasoning.

All injustice in it is a powerful driver and I guarantee that Matilda will set my goal of preventing Verity’s expulsion with fixed enthusiasm, as opposed to the hateful Miss Tranchibald. Like developer Inkle’s 2021 game overboard, they are given time limits for work inside and a handful of areas that travel between the library and the hospital room (aka the “SAN” where the school’s gross matrons lurk. Each area has characters to discuss and objects to find, and each action moves the clock forward. The game continues on a strict school timetable. For example, at 2pm, all students will be in the military to the library for Latin.

The idea is to solve who is where and plan your exploration accordingly. For example, you might want to sneak into Sun while Matron teaches the gym on the premises. The secret you reveal unlocks the new conversation line. This unlocks even more secret paths, and everything is locked with the ultimate goal of preventing Verity from being unjustified expulsion.

However, you cannot achieve that on your first attempt. The game is designed to be played multiple times, and each 30-minute run improves your character’s motivations and understanding of what’s going on in this strange school. I don’t ruin it here, but the plot goes to some fun and unexpected places, and the 1922 setting provides excuses to riff on the effects of the Empire, World War I, and of course the class system. And that system is really equipped for verity. He quickly discovers that the only way to fight back is to get nasty.

Cheeky and poisonous retorts unlock further dialogue. If you want to help verity not only to avoid boredom, but also to succeed in becoming a head girl, you will see her lying, stealing, and threatening. It also gives the feeling that Verity may be a somewhat unreliable narrator. She associates it with her father, so the story changes subtly with each story.

This helps to shake things up a bit, but inevitably the structure of the game will bring about some repetition as you perform many of the same actions each day. It takes a little patience to keep all the paths of investigation in your head. But it’s worth persevering to uncover all the intimate secrets of the school and enjoy more of the excellent writings of story director John Ingold.

It only took a few nights to reach the game’s ending Coker, and Verity’s arc is extremely pleased. Here, the public school system mainly serves as a way of creating inequality, normalizing bullying, and encouraging ruthlessness. The only way to succeed is to beat the asshole in your own game. What options do you have when your system is so rotten?

Whoa! The Sims Have Taken a Dark Turn | Games

when I was growing up, the genre-defining dollhouse sim Sims was the ultimate escape. I built my dream home, grew the neighborhoods of strange and wonderful friends, and lived a fantasy adult life.

So when EA drops surprise Sims 1 and 2 Last weekend, all expansions are included to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the series (my 9 year old self dream) I was naturally forced to return to my happy place. Beginners, rooms, goths, and sometimes, I removed the pool ladders while swimming a bit, and only had the pauses I needed for my mommy roast dinner.

I’ve introduced familiar music, tragic pool accidents, and my own personal nostalgia of French maids, but there’s something lurking beneath the game’s quirky and hilarious look. Surprisingly, this game now feels more like a struggle simulator than a chance to live your dream life. (I forgot how much time the Sims spent playing chess.) Like the town of Picket Fence in Lynch, I realized that there was darkness lurking under the sheen of the suburbs.

The original Sims Game was more dystopian than the cheerful and brightly colored Sims 4 of today. Contrast is not just about aesthetics. Twenty years ago, Sims had no dreams or ambitions. Your virtual family has worked long hours for a pricey life, some of the most poignant music in the history of death and gaming.

Forget your personality, desires and preferences. Sims 1 is a capitalist nightmare where survival outweighs self-realization.




Be careful of ovens that burn spontaneously! …Sims 1 + 2.

I forgot the time my original Sim actually spent on work. They are doing boring and boring work from your vision. Create a simple message you get when they are oddly shocked (or handed over). It’ll probably be fired and kill you, heading towards the cheapest oven that’s offered that small wage packet. This is a game that punishes you for being poor. Even these moments with the most meaningful love in my Sims life seemed to offer them nothing. They were transactions and no use was helpful other than unlocking new interactions. They are playing for my enjoyment, not for theirs.

Friendships are also very traded here. To improve your rank at work, you need a certain number. Keeping yourself alone will make you poor and you will likely die of having a cheap, spontaneously burning microwave. This is particularly sad for Sims, who live alone. I’m exhausted from work. If you don’t have time to call friends over the phone for hours, or if they refuse to come, your relationship will quickly break

Perhaps my new, dark perspective on the game comes from the world we live in now. I’m finally living a fantasy adult life – I’ve been on the brink of less relaxation in my gothic apartment dream home, more overwork, lower wages, and spiral breakdowns I didn’t realize that it was. In a time of economic insecurity and burnout in 2025, Sims’ crushing feels brutal.

For all existential horrors, Sims 1 is still an escape. Certainly, it presents a kind of capitalist nightmare. But it’s a capitalism nightmare you can control. No matter how hard your daily slogans work, you can always enter your cheat code and click to wipe out any financial stress. This is the ultimate fantasy. It’s also strangely accurate. Just like in real life, external benefits (and systemic misconduct) are more likely to lead to success than shattering rules and following them.

Yes, Sims 1 was and remains a dystopian suburban treadmill, but there is also room for humor. Confusion is interesting, failure is temporary, and the worst tragedy can be reversed by clicking the mouse.

HHave you ever been to Taylor Town? As you know, it’s where The Beatles came from. It’s where you can catch a ferry across the River Mersey. It’s home to two famous football stadiums, Goodison Park and Anfield, the latter of which I think was home to Taylorpool FC. Oh, wait. It’s not. It’s Liverpool, right?

Frankly, you could be forgiven for making that mistake, because the place is getting all hyped up about Taylor Swift’s upcoming concert, with “Liverpool Loves Taylor” posters plastered all over the city and an 11-part art installation trail featuring a grand piano, a throne and “hand-made seagulls” has been created. Rename the town after the star.

But is it too much? When does one musician have too big an impact on the world? Is Taylor Swift (whisper it) boring?
