Would you prefer a partner who is attractive but plain, or someone who is appealing, even if you consider yourself less attractive? Your response may vary based on your gender. A study involving over 1,200 heterosexual adults in the U.S. revealed significant differences in how men and women choose between possessing certain traits themselves or seeking them in a partner.

“Men are inclined to compromise their own attractiveness for the sake of a very appealing partner, while the reverse is true for women,” Bill von Hippel from the Australian consultancy Research with Impact explained.

Von Hippel and his research team questioned participants about their preferences regarding six traits: wealth, beauty, ambition, humor, intelligence, and kindness, asking them how much of a disparity they would tolerate between their own traits and those of a partner. “It’s as if only supermodels are acceptable for dating, regardless of one’s own attractiveness,” von Hippel remarked.

In contrast to earlier studies, this research required participants to articulate their preferences. It revealed that the most notable difference between men and women lay in physical looks, while they were aligned in wishing to date partners possessing similar levels of kindness.

Generally, women perceived themselves as more attractive and intelligent, favoring men who are wealthier, more intriguing, and more ambitious, while men mainly preferred dating women who outshined them in beauty and wealth.

For instance, women rated the importance of their own beauty as 7.01 on an 11-point scale, whereas men assigned a value of 4.77 to their own looks. Conversely, men valued being interesting at 7.08, while women rated this trait at 5.81. A score below 6 indicates a greater desire for that trait in a partner than in oneself.

While Von Hippel acknowledged variations among individual responses, he stressed that the overall results were compelling. “This has a significant impact,” he remarked.

Lisa Welling, a professor at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, commented that this approach of forced choices is an intriguing way to reveal underlying preferences, though such constructs may lack relevance in genuine relationships. There’s also the question of whether individuals are considering short-term versus long-term partners, which “often holds significance,” she noted.

Steve Stewart-Williams from the University of Nottingham in Malaysia pointed out that while the findings are generally unsurprising, having participants make definitive choices may have clarified their true feelings. Previous research might have underestimated the breadth of gender differences in mate preferences due to measurement techniques, he opined. For instance, past studies may not have adequately accounted for the notion that individuals might wish for traits in themselves because they believe it could enhance their appeal to potential partners.

Von Hippel suggested that these findings are understandable from an evolutionary standpoint. Women carry the substantial biological responsibility of child-rearing and thus need to ensure prospective partners are capable of providing for their offspring, while men are evolutionarily driven to select for health and fertility in women.

Stewart-Williams believes the study may reflect evolutionary patterns in contemporary human populations, but cautioned that the research was limited to self-reported data from heterosexual individuals in the U.S., and it remains uncertain whether these conclusions apply more broadly.

Authorities warn that misinformation on social media is pushing men to NHS clinics for unnecessary testosterone treatments, exacerbating already strained waiting lists.

Testosterone therapy is a prescription-only treatment recommended under national guidelines for men who display clinically verified deficiencies, validated through symptoms or consistent blood tests.

However, a surge of viral content on platforms like TikTok and Instagram is promoting blood tests as a means to receive testosterone as a lifestyle supplement, marketing it as a cure for issues like low energy, diminished focus, and decreased libido.


Medical professionals warn that taking unwarranted testosterone can inhibit natural hormone production, result in infertility, and elevate risks for blood clots, heart disease, and mood disorders.

The increasing demand for online consultations is becoming evident in medical facilities.

Professor Channa Jayasena from Imperial College London and chair of the Endocrine Society Andrology Network noted that hospital specialists are witnessing a rise in men taking these private blood tests, often promoted through social media, and being inaccurately advised that they require testosterone.

“We consulted with 300 endocrinologists at a national conference, and they all reported seeing patients in these clinics weekly,” he said. “They’re overwhelming our facilities. We previously focused on adrenal conditions and diabetes, and it’s significantly affecting NHS services. We’re left wondering how to manage this situation.”

While advertising prescription medications is illegal in the UK, the Guardian discovered that several TikTok influencers collaborate with private clinics to promote blood tests legally marketed as part of testosterone therapy.

Supporters of testosterone replacement therapy, amassing thousands of followers, are incentivized by private clinics to advertise discount offers and promotions to encourage men to assess their testosterone levels and possibly pursue treatment.

One popular post shows a man lifting weights, urging viewers: “Get your testosterone tested… DM me for £20 off.” Another video suggests that a free blood test is available as part of an incentive to “enhance” his performance.

The Guardian notified the Advertising Standards Authority about these posts for potentially violating regulations regarding prescription drugs, triggering an investigation by the oversight body.

Jayasena stated, “I recently attended the National Education Course for the Next Generation of Endocrine Consultants, where many expressed concerns about reproductive health and the escalating trend of men being pushed to boost their testosterone levels.”

He added: “Beyond just influencers, this issue is significant. Healthcare professionals are encountering patients who come in for private blood tests, possibly arranged through influencers, and being incorrectly advised by inexperienced medical personnel that they should commence testosterone therapy. This guidance is fundamentally flawed.”

In private clinics, the initial year of Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) ranges from £1,800 to £2,200, covering medication, monitoring, and consultations.

Originally a specialized treatment for a limited group of men with clinically diagnosed hormone deficiencies, TRT is now increasingly viewed as a lifestyle or “performance enhancement” option. Online clinics are also offering home blood tests and subscription services, making such treatments more easily accessible outside conventional healthcare routes.

These messages imply that diminished motivation, exhaustion, and aging signify “low T,” leading more men to seek testing and treatment, despite medical advice restricting TRT to individuals with confirmed hormonal deficiencies.

Professor Jayasena remarked: “There are specific clinical protocols dictating who should or shouldn’t consider testosterone therapy. Some symptoms, like erectile dysfunction, undeniably correlate with low testosterone, whereas others, like muscle mass or feeling down, do not. A man might express dissatisfaction with his muscle tone and be advised to get tested, yet evidence supporting the necessity of such testing remains scarce.”

“What’s particularly alarming is that some clinics are now administering testosterone to men with normal testosterone levels. Research shows there’s no benefit to testosterone levels exceeding 12 nmol/L. I have also received reports of clinics providing testosterone to individuals under 18, a significant demographic.”

He explained that unnecessary testosterone usage can lead to infertility: “It inhibits testicular function and the hormonal messages from the brain necessary for testicular health, compelling us to combine and administer other drugs to counteract this effect. This is akin to the strategies used by anabolic steroid users.”

Study Suggests Men Should Exercise Twice as Long as Women for Heart Health

Research indicates that men may need to engage in exercise for twice as long as women to obtain equivalent health benefits, according to a significant new study involving 85,000 participants.

Findings revealed that women performing approximately four hours of moderate to vigorous exercise weekly, such as brisk jogging, swimming, or dancing, could lower their risk of coronary heart disease by 30 percent. In contrast, men required nearly nine hours of physical activity per week to achieve the same risk reduction.

While the research team did not explore the reasons for this notable difference, they proposed several physiological explanations.

Women possess higher estrogen levels, a hormone linked to bone and muscle health along with fat metabolism rates.

Additionally, men and women have different types of skeletal muscles, which may make women more adept at endurance training.

“Heart disease is the primary cause of premature death in both genders, though men typically develop heart disease earlier, and women tend to ‘catch up’ later in life after menopause,” stated Professor Riyaz Patel, a cardiologist at University College London, who was not part of the study. “The takeaway is that everyone can benefit from exercise. Increased physical activity is advantageous for all.”

The study, led by Jiajin Chen from Xiamen University in China, monitored participants aged 37 to 73 using wrist-worn fitness trackers over an eight-year period.

For individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions, women required just 51 minutes of exercise weekly to reduce their risk of death by 30 percent, compared to 85 minutes for men.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of early death globally. In the United States alone, about 100 out of every 100,000 women are anticipated to die from cardiovascular disease in 2023, while the figure for men is 60% higher.

The World Health Organization, along with the American Heart Association and NHS, advises individuals aged 16 to 64, regardless of gender, to engage in 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week.

For men over 50, engaging in more than twice the exercise as women may be necessary to achieve equivalent heart health benefits. Data analysis from activity trackers indicated that this demographic requires almost nine hours of moderate-to-vigorous activities, such as brisk walking or cycling, each week to lower their risk of coronary heart disease by 30%.

In comparison, women only need around four hours to achieve the same reduction.

Researchers had long speculated that women might experience greater heart benefits from exercise than men, based on self-reported data, although such figures can be misleading.

To address this issue, Chen Jiajing and colleagues at Xiamen University in China utilized data from wrist-worn activity monitors sourced from the British Biobank study, correlated with participants’ health records over an eight-year span.

The team first evaluated data from 80,243 adults, averaging 61 years in age and with no previous history of coronary heart disease. Women achieving at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise weekly had a 22% reduced risk of developing coronary heart disease, while men saw only a 17% reduction with the same exercise commitment.

To reach a 30% risk reduction, even greater physical activity was required. There was a notable gender disparity in this regard, with women needing to exercise 250 minutes and men needing 530 minutes.

The team next examined 5,169 participants already diagnosed with coronary heart disease, with an average age of 67, and two-thirds being male. Women who engaged in 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per week were 70% less likely to die from any cause in the subsequent eight years compared to less active women. Conversely, men who completed the same amount of exercise only experienced a 20% lower likelihood of death than their less active counterparts.

“This isn’t bad news for men, but it’s important to recognize,” says Nir Einon from Monash University, Australia. “With this knowledge, men can strive to improve and exercise more. It’s encouraging for busy women, yet we must not forget that women also need to remain active.”

Chen and his team could not be reached for immediate comments, but the study suggests the discrepancy may be linked to hormonal factors, as higher estrogen levels can enhance fat metabolism during exercise. Eynon posited that biological differences could mean women utilize more breathing capacity, metabolic energy, and muscle strength to achieve comparable physical tasks as men.

The research is “robust”; Guidelines based on gender according to Ercilia DeFilippis at Columbia University in New York City, yet it primarily encompasses individuals who are about 93% white, affluent, and educated. DeFilippis highlighted that Black women typically experience poorer cardiovascular outcomes than their white counterparts, and social factors significantly impact their health and treatment adherence.

“It’s crucial to understand how these findings relate to more racially diverse and socio-economically disadvantaged groups in the future, given the severe impact of cardiovascular disease,” she emphasized.

Nonetheless, these findings for the older demographic indicate that remaining active in later years can offer considerable benefits, but exercise regimens should be customized according to age and physical capabilities, she reiterated. “It’s never too late to become active and move your body.”

Meta has sparked controversy by utilizing a female student’s back-to-school photo to market one of its social media platforms to a 37-year-old man, a decision deemed “outrageous” and “upsetting.”

The man is pitted against Mark Zuckerberg’s Elon Musk’s X, receiving a post urging him to “get the thread.”

Meta employed the child’s images after they were shared on Instagram by their parents as school started back up. The parents were unaware that the meta setting allowed for this usage. One mother noted her account was private, yet the posts were automatically visible in public threads. Another mother mentioned that she posted the photo on her public Instagram account. Stranger interactions highlighted their child’s posts as “suggested threads.”

The recipient conveyed to the Guardian that the post felt “deliberately provocative and ultimately exploitative of the children and families involved.”

The father of the13-year-old girl featured in the post expressed that it was “absolutely outrageous.” All images portrayed female students in short skirts, showcasing bare legs or stockings.

“Discovering her image used by such a large company in a context that felt sexualized for product promotion made me feel quite sick,” he stated.

Meta, a massive company valued at £1.5TN, based in Menlo Park, California, defended its actions, stating the images did not breach their policies. They encouraged users to explore the thread by highlighting public posts that adhere to community standards and recommended guidelines. Although their system does not recommend threads shared by teenagers, these posts were generated from adult accounts that permitted public viewing.

The man who received the post noted that he was solely sent promotional content featuring female students, with no representation of boys in school uniforms, which he felt added a “sexualization aspect.”

One mother of a 15-year-old said the images were used in a promotional post featuring a prominent “thread” button. “It was a photo of my daughter heading to school. I never anticipated Instagram would utilize it for promotion. I absolutely hate it. She’s a minor,” she lamented.

She firmly rejected any agreement, stating, “It wasn’t for the money of the world. [its platform].”

Her Instagram account, typically modest with 267 followers, saw her child’s post attract nearly 7,000 viewers.

Another mother whose 13-year-old child’s photo was similarly featured remarked:

Meta categorized such posts as “recommended tools,” insisting that public posts should serve this function.

A corporate representative stated, “The shared images do not violate our policy and are postings from schools published by parents. There are systems in place to prevent teenagers from recommending shared threads.”

The 37-year-old London Instagram user who received the post requested to remain anonymous.

He noted he had not liked or posted similar images prior to receiving photos of the schoolgirl.

“To me, this feels intentionally provocative, introducing trendy and popular content, ultimately exploiting the children and families involved and jeopardizing online safety.”

“We advocate for children’s rights online,” said Beeban Kidron, a crossbench peer and advocate.

“Meta prioritizes corporate growth over children’s rights to privacy, which is the only reason we can fathom for sending a photograph of a female student to a 37-year-old man.”

She urged the Regulator of Communications to consider implementing measures this summer to prevent unidentified adults from contacting children, stating that “companies should not have the right to feed sensitive content to children.”

Ofcom’s illegal harm initiatives aim to combat online grooming, emphasizing that “Your child’s profile, location, and connections should not be visible to others.”

Meta’s system suggests that if a thread profile is public, posts from an adult profile could be recommended on Facebook or Instagram, allowing others to “discover, follow, and interact with you.” Users can turn this off or switch a thread profile to private.

The Vanishing Y Chromosome: A Potential Contributor to Heart Disease in Men

A recent study involving over 30,000 individuals has revealed that men who experience a loss of Y chromosomes in a substantial number of immune cells are at a higher risk for narrower blood vessels, a significant factor in the development of heart disease.

“The loss of Y chromosomes greatly impacts men,” states Kenneth Walsh from the University of Virginia, who was not involved in the research. “Men’s lifespan averages six years shorter than women’s, primarily due to the instability of sex chromosomes.”

Loss of the Y chromosome is one of the most prevalent mutations following conception in men. This phenomenon typically occurs in leukocytes, the immune cells responsible for attacking and eliminating pathogens, as the rapidly multiplying stem cells that generate white blood cells undergo division. The cells without Y chromosomes accumulate and become more frequent as individuals age; approximately 40% of 70-year-old men show detectable losses.

This issue gained traction in 2014 when Lars Forsberg from Uppsala University in Sweden and his colleagues noted that elderly men with significant Y chromosome loss in their blood typically had a lifespan that was five years shorter than those without it. Walsh later linked this loss to heart disease.

Forsberg and his research team have now uncovered further connections between Y chromosome loss and specific cardiovascular issues. They analyzed data from Swedish cardiopulmonary bioimaging studies, which provided detailed vascular scans of 30,150 volunteers aged between 65 and 64. None of the participants exhibited symptoms of cardiovascular disease; however, they were assessed for vascular stenosis or atherosclerosis.

Among the male participants, 12,400 possessed the necessary genetic information to evaluate their Y chromosome loss. They were categorized into three groups: those with no detectable Y loss in leukocytes, those with less than 10% loss, and those with over 10% loss. Atherosclerosis scores for these groups were then compared with each other and with a female cohort in the study.

The researchers discovered that approximately 75% of men who had the highest Y chromosome loss exhibited narrowed blood vessels, while around 60% of those with less than 10% loss showed similar findings.

Despite some atherosclerosis being observed even in those with undetectable Y loss, about 55% of men and roughly 30% of women in this category had been affected. “Clearly,” Forsberg noted, “[loss of Y] involves other factors.”

In the coming months, Thimoteus Speer and colleagues from the University of Goethe in Frankfurt studied men undergoing angiography, an X-ray technique for examining blood vessels due to suspected cardiovascular disease. They found that over the next decade, individuals who lost Y chromosomes in more than 17% of their immune cells were more than twice as likely to die from a heart attack compared to those with less affected cells.

“The findings of Lars Forsberg and our study are quite consistent,” Speer remarked. “He observes increased coronary atherosclerosis, correlating it with a higher risk of mortality from myocardial infarction [heart attack], emphasizing the relationship with coronary atherosclerosis.”

Walsh acknowledges that neither study definitively proves that Y chromosome loss directly causes these outcomes. However, statistical analyses suggest its independent effect aside from smoking or aging— the primary risk factors for mutations.

The pressing question remains: how does Y chromosome loss impact health? Previous research by Walsh indicated that removing chromosomes from mouse immune cells adversely affects the cardiovascular system by driving fibrosis, which is the formation of scar tissue. However, heart attacks and atherosclerosis are typically more associated with inflammation and lipid metabolism defects than fibrosis. Both Speer and Walsh assert that more research is essential to unravel this relationship.

With a deeper understanding of the underlying processes, Speer hopes that future blood tests for Y chromosome loss will guide proactive interventions. “[These tests] may help in identifying patients who could particularly benefit from specific treatments,” he concludes.

Although they are about half the size of male gorillas, female gorillas can surpass their male counterparts in competitions for status and resources. A recent study highlights this intriguing finding.

This discovery upends the long-held belief that gorilla society is primarily patriarchal, emphasizing male dominance over females, and sheds light on the origins of human gender relations.

Researchers from the German Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology and the University of Torque in Finland examined 25 years of data gathered from observations of gorilla behaviors across four distinct groups.

Wild mountain gorillas have often been viewed as a prime example of strict male dominance in primate societies, largely due to the size disparity between males and females.

It is true that gorilla society has a hierarchical structure, with one alpha male reigning at the top, while other gorillas vie for status beneath him.

However, this new research suggests that gorilla hierarchies may be much more gender-equitable than previously thought.

“Female gorillas frequently outperform males,” stated author Reed Dr. Nikos Smitt, a researcher at Max Planck and Turku, in an interview with BBC Science Focus. “This is crucial for understanding power dynamics; it’s not solely about size and strength.”

Indeed, 88% of female gorillas exhibited superior performance compared to at least one adult male in groups with multiple males, particularly against those who were young or old.

Additionally, when female gorillas faced off against males other than the alpha, they won more than a quarter of the time, even when significantly outmatched in size.

According to Dr. Martha Robbins, Director of the Bwindi Mountain Gorilla Research Project, this success is likely linked to the relationships between these high-ranking females and their alpha males. BBC Science Focus reported her insights: “Gorillas are aware of their group’s social status and dynamics. Though non-alpha males are typically larger and stronger, they often choose to hold back to avoid confrontations with alpha males. It’s advantageous for them to be compliant in a group setting.”

Researchers have also found that the stakes in these conflicts often involve priority access to food, another finding that challenges previous assumptions.

Earlier studies suggested that female gorillas exclusively competed for food among themselves, with males primarily competing with females. However, this research reveals that both genders vie for food resources.

These observations could reshape our understanding of gender dynamics within human societies.

The researchers noted that male dominance over female counterparts is not a straightforward outcome of evolution, but rather reflects “human’s flexible social and mating frameworks.”

Furthermore, they argue that this is supported by observations among our close relatives, such as bonobos and chimpanzees, where males are larger than females, yet females hold more dominance.

As a result, scientists suggest that humans are unlikely to inherit patriarchal structures from their primate ancestors.

Research indicates that women’s faces are generally deemed more attractive than those of men. This conclusion comes from an extensive study involving 12,000 participants globally, revealing that women tend to rate other women’s faces as more appealing than men do.

“When analyzing the gender of the raters, it becomes clear that women’s preferences for female faces are significantly stronger,” says Eugen Wassiliwizky from the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Germany.

Typically, in many species of mammals and birds, males develop traits to attract females, as noted by Ushiri Withkey. For instance, male mandrill baboons showcase vibrant red and blue facial colors.

“Females are usually the selective sex,” he explains. “This has resulted in men appearing even more attractive over time.”

Yet, as biologists like Charles Darwin have suggested, humans seem distinct in their preference for women as the “fairer sex.”

“There has been ongoing discourse since the 19th century regarding the reversal of sexual roles in humans, but surprisingly, this has not been empirically tested,” Wassiliwizky comments.

Using raw data from various studies on facial attraction, he seeks to substantiate this assumption. For instance, one study his team analyzed looked at the impact of emotions on perceived facial attractiveness.

Much of the analyzed data stems from studies intentionally recruiting heterosexual participants for facial evaluations, according to Washiri Withkey. While some ratings come from volunteers identified as LGBTQ+, their numbers are too limited for substantial conclusions.

Women’s preferences for facial attractiveness seem to cross cultural and national boundaries, with the research revealing “moderate to large scale” trends in nearly all global regions, excluding sub-Saharan Africa and ethnic groups identified as African.

As noted by Washiri Withkey, the perception of women’s faces as more attractive correlates with distinct physical characteristics between genders, yet familiarity with individuals can also influence how attractiveness is perceived by both sexes.

By assessing women’s ratings between feminine and masculine facial features, the research concluded that roughly two-thirds of women’s preferences are attributed to physical disparities, while the remaining third reflects an understanding of gender.

Why do women regard other women as more attractive? “Women might display solidarity with each other or better appreciate one another’s beauty,” speculates Washiri Withkey.

Conversely, regarding why women rate men less favorably than other men, he suggests it might stem from a reluctance to acknowledge male attractiveness, compounded by awareness that their assessments are scrutinized.

Alternatively, women may consider a man’s character based on his appearance. Wassiliwizky advocates for more focused future research, proposing questions such as, “Do you find yourself physically attracted to this individual?” and “How appealing is this face?”

“This paper thoroughly displays the gender variations in attraction across numerous images and cultures,” states Anthony Little from the University of Bath, UK. “Nevertheless, researchers have long highlighted that appeal transcends merely selecting peers.”

“Meta-analytic studies decisively affirm the existence of a ‘gender attractiveness gap’,” adds Karel Kleiner from Charles University in the Czech Republic.

Kleisner’s research uncovered that physical differences in facial features are least pronounced in certain African populations, potentially explaining the lack of significant effects observed there.

Moreover, local beauty standards can vary considerably from global norms, Kleisner notes. “A key limitation of this study is its insensitivity to the unique aesthetics of African beauty.”

In addition, studies focused on body attractiveness might yield different results. “Truthfully, we remain uncertain,” Washiri Withkey admits, highlighting the absence of comparative studies on full-body appeal.

New AI Tools Predict Which Men Will Respond to Prostate Cancer Treatments

Medical professionals have created an artificial intelligence tool capable of predicting which men diagnosed with prostate cancer are likely to benefit from treatment, potentially lowering the risk of mortality.

Abiraterone is regarded as a revolutionary treatment for the condition, which is the most prevalent cancer among men in over 100 countries. It has already enabled countless individuals with advanced prostate cancer to enjoy extended lifespans.

Nonetheless, some nations, including the UK, have ceased offering this “remarkable” medication to men whose cancer has not metastasized.

Currently, teams from the US, UK, and Switzerland are developing AI assessments that determine which men are likely to gain from Abiraterone. This “promising” advancement enhances the healthcare system to allocate medications more effectively to suitable candidates while allowing others to avoid unnecessary treatments.

The AI test was unveiled in Chicago at the annual conference of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the largest cancer conference globally.

Nick James, a professor specializing in prostate and bladder cancer research at the London Cancer Institute, serves as a consultant clinical oncologist at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads the development team.

“Abiraterone has already greatly enhanced the prognosis for hundreds of thousands of men with advanced prostate cancer,” James stated. “We recognize that for many men whose cancer hasn’t spread yet, it can have significant implications.

“However, the treatment comes with side effects and necessitates additional monitoring for potential issues such as hypertension or liver abnormalities. It is extremely valuable to identify those most likely to truly benefit, as it may slightly elevate the risks of diabetes and heart complications.

“This research indicates that those who respond optimally to abiraterone, as well as those who fare well with standard treatments alone, can decide between hormone therapy and radiation therapy.”

The AI tool examines tumor images and identifies features that may not be discernible to the naked eye. Prostate Cancer UK, the Medical Research Council, and arterial funded teams analyzed biopsy images from over 1,000 men exhibiting high-risk prostate cancer that had not metastasized.

AI analysis pinpointed 25% of the men in the study who were most likely to gain from Abiraterone. For these individuals, the medication halved the risk of mortality.

In the study, patients received a score indicating a positive or negative biomarker. This was then compared with outcomes. Among those with biomarker-positive tumors, the risk of death was reduced from 17% to 9% after five years for one in four men.

For patients with biomarker-negative tumors, Abiraterone decreased the risk of death from 7% to 4%. The research team indicated this result was neither statistically nor clinically significant, meaning these men are better off with standard treatment alone and can avoid unnecessary therapies.

Professor Gert Attard, the research co-leader at UCL Cancer Institute, noted, “This study highlights that, within a sizable cohort of patients, new algorithms can be utilized to glean information from routinely available pathology slides to customize treatments to individual patients, thereby minimizing unnecessary interventions while maximizing the effectiveness of treatment.”

James mentioned that fewer men may require the medication than previously believed, suggesting that health services should contemplate administering it to men whose cancer hasn’t spread.

While it has been sanctioned for use within the NHS for advanced prostate cancer in England, it has yet to receive approval for newly diagnosed high-risk cases that have not metastasized. However, men with indications of high-risk cancer have had access to treatment in Scotland and Wales for two years.

“Abiraterone costs just £77 per pack compared to thousands for new treatments,” James remarked. “We sincerely hope this new research will clarify who truly benefits from this drug, especially given NHS England’s decision not to fund it for high-risk non-metastatic prostate cancer cases.”

Men Who Shared Deep Fake Images of Notable Australian Women Risk $450,000 Fine

Regulators overseeing online safety are pursuing the maximum fine of $450,000 against a man for publishing deepfake images of a well-known Australian woman on his website, marking a significant case in an Australian court.

The Esafety Commissioner has initiated legal action against Anthony Rotondo for his failure to remove “intimate images” of high-profile Australian women from the Deepfake Pornography site.

The federal courts maintain the confidentiality of the women’s real names.


The court learned that Rotondo initially defied the order while residing in the Philippines, prompting the committee to pursue legal action upon his return to Australia.

Rotondo had posted an image on Mrdeepfakes’ site.

In December 2023, Rotondo was fined after admitting to breaching the court’s order by failing to remove the image. He subsequently provided the password to delete the Deepfake image.

A representative from the Esafety Commissioner indicated that regulators are aiming for a fine between $400,000 and $450,000 for the violations of online safety law.

The spokesperson emphasized that the proposed penalty reflects the seriousness of the “significant impact on the targeted women.”

“This penalty aims to deter others from partaking in such harmful actions,” they stated.

Esafety highlighted that the creation and distribution of nonconsensual explicit deepfake images result in severe psychological and emotional harm for the victims.

The penalty hearing occurred on Monday, and the court has reserved its decision.

Additionally, federal legislation was passed in 2024, strengthening the fight against explicit deepfakes.

In her introductory remarks to the Senate committee considering the bill last July, Esafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant noted that DeepFakes have surged by 550% since 2019, with 99% of such pornographic content featuring images of women and girls.

Study Finds Men More Prone to “Hard Heart Syndrome” Mortality

Following traumatic experiences, such as a divorce or the loss of a loved one, individuals may encounter symptoms like chest pain and shortness of breath.

This phenomenon, clinically termed takotsubo cardiomyopathy, is believed to arise from emotional or physical stress that triggers a surge of hormones, including adrenaline, which hampers the heart’s ability to contract effectively. While most individuals recover swiftly, a minority may face heart failure.

Wounded heart syndrome predominantly affects women; however, men have a mortality rate that is more than double that of women. A study published recently in the Journal of the American Heart Association highlights this disparity.

The research examined data from around 200,000 adults in the U.S. who were hospitalized for this condition between 2016 and 2020. It found that nearly 11% of men in this group died, compared to about 5% of women. This was supported by previous studies indicating a higher mortality rate among men.

“It’s consistently noted that men generally do not experience takotsubo syndrome as frequently, but when they do, the outcomes tend to be worse,” explained Dr. Harmony Reynolds, director of NYU Langone Health’s Center for Women’s Cardiovascular Research, who was not part of the study.

The differences between men and women could be tied to the triggers of their conditions, according to the cardiologist. In men, the syndrome is often instigated by physical stressors like surgery or stroke, whereas in women, the triggers tend to be emotional, such as job loss or the death of a loved one.

“Individuals facing emotional stressors tend to fare better,” noted Dr. Iran Wittstein, a cardiologist at Johns Hopkins Medicine who was not involved in the study.

“Men appear to have a higher risk of severe outcomes or mortality, suggesting that a more dangerous trigger is necessary for syndrome onset.”

Dr. Mohammad Movahed, the principal investigator of the study, added that men may also struggle more with recovery from takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Research indicates lower social support for men to help them cope with stress.

“If the stressor is transient and then removed, there could still be damage to the heart or diminished recovery chances,” Movahed, a cardiologist at the University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center, explained.

However, scientists continue to explore the underlying mechanisms of the syndrome and why fatalities occur in rare instances.

“Researchers are still pursuing to uncover the definitive causes of this condition,” Wittstein remarked.

Is stress the only trigger?

To diagnose takotsubo cardiomyopathy, physicians look for certain hallmark signs. Typically, in affected patients, parts of the heart muscle balloon out, but there are usually no blocked arteries, which would indicate a heart attack. Most patients can also identify stressors that led to their episodes.

“During these moments, we feel the weight on our hearts,” stated Dr. Matthew Tomey, a cardiologist at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City. “It’s as if heartache manifests physically.”

However, Wittstein cautioned that stress alone may not suffice to trigger takotsubo syndrome.

“Some individuals might have minor work-related frustrations, engage in a slightly intense jog, or experience irritation at a red light,” he described.

Reynolds shared that one of her patients had four instances of the syndrome, each stemming from a mild stomach bug that caused vomiting.

“She is quite averse to vomiting, which likely contributed to her incidents,” she noted.

Wittstein now posits that certain individuals may harbor an inherent sensitivity to takotsubo syndrome. His findings suggest that stress hormones narrow small blood vessels around the heart, limiting blood flow and making some individuals, especially those with high blood pressure or cholesterol, more vulnerable.

Research indicates that postmenopausal women are at an elevated risk of developing this syndrome, potentially due to decreased estrogen levels, which facilitate the dilation of small blood vessels around the heart.

However, Reynolds emphasized that further research is needed to fully understand these mechanisms.

“There’s a suggestion that sex hormones may play a role, but establishing that link is still an ongoing challenge,” she said.

It’s complex to manage and prevent

The intricate nature of takotsubo cardiomyopathy can complicate its prevention and treatment.

Doctors often seek ways to alleviate stress, sometimes prescribing medications intended for other heart conditions, such as beta blockers, or recommending meditation and mental health support.

“To date, we have not identified any preventive drugs that effectively reduce complications, mortality rates, or specific therapies,” Movahed stated.

The new study found that mortality rates associated with takotsubo syndrome remained relatively stable from 2016 to 2020.

However, Wittstein noted that the study relies on diagnostic codes assigned to hospitalized patients, which might overlook broader circumstances influencing a patient’s death, particularly regarding strokes or other neurological issues.

“I suspect many individuals recover from takotsubo syndrome but subsequently succumb to other complications,” he remarked.

The cardiologist advises patients to seek immediate medical attention if they experience chest pain or shortness of breath, rather than attributing it solely to stress.

“Only through a comprehensive evaluation at the hospital can we differentiate between this condition and a traditional heart attack,” Reynolds cautioned. “Thus, it’s critical not to ignore chest pain.”

Judge Rules Men Accused of Hacking Can Be Sent to U.S. for Trial

A British court has approved the extradition of an Israeli individual charged by a New York prosecutor in a case involving an operation dubbed “hacking fatalen,” aimed at environmental organizations.

According to prosecutors, the company operated by 57-year-old Amit Forlit allegedly earned over $16 million by hacking more than 100 victims and stealing confidential data while working for major oil companies on behalf of a lobbying firm.

In a court submission from January, Forlit’s attorneys identified the company as ExxonMobil. Exxon is currently facing lawsuits from Democratic lawyers and local officials regarding its role in climate change, with claims that it has concealed knowledge about climate change for decades to maintain its oil sales. However, addressing the root of the problem – the lack of direction and purpose among young men today – is essential for long-term change.

Antibiotic use by men may help lower the incidence of bacterial vaginosis in women

Women with bacterial vaginosis, a recurrent condition that increases the risk of pregnancy complications, can benefit from male sexual partners being treated with antibiotics, according to a trial that found that their risk of symptoms returning was nearly half.

All women took standard antibiotics for a week, but about half of their partners were given oral antibiotics and were told to apply antibiotic cream to their penis during the same period. The remaining men were not treated. None of the participants were transgender.

Three months later, 63% of women whose partners were not treated had recurrence symptoms, while only 35% of women who received antibiotics experienced a recurrence. “This definitely has a significant effect of becoming a valuable intervention for this group of women,” he says. The Y chromosome has already undergone significant degeneration and could potentially vanish entirely. But what implications would this disappearance have?

Could new sexes emerge? Or could the male species face extinction? Renowned Australian geneticist Jenny Graves, an expert on the Y chromosome, sheds light on these developments.

Why is the Y chromosome disappearing?

First, let’s revisit the concept of sex chromosomes. Women typically have two X chromosomes, while men possess one X and one Y chromosome.

These chromosome pairs, which account for about 4% of an individual’s DNA, play a vital role in determining sex.

“Chromosomes typically occur in pairs, with men and women sharing the same sex pairs. Women have two large X chromosomes, whereas men have one X and one Y,” explains Graves.

“In comparison to the X chromosome, the Y chromosome is relatively small, containing only 45 genes, with one gene determining maleness and several others involved in sperm production. The remaining genes serve uncertain purposes. By contrast, the X chromosome contains 900-1400 genes.

Originally, the Y chromosome had over 900 genes similar to the X chromosome. Presently, only 45 genes remain. These sex chromosomes evolved from identical non-gender-associated chromosomes, rendering much of their current makeup functionally redundant.

The degeneration of the Y chromosome is not unique to humans; it also occurs in other species. For instance, fruit flies have lost the majority of their Y chromosomes.

“The loss of the Y chromosome seems to stem from a couple of factors. The Y chromosome is exclusively present in the testes, never in the ovaries; thus, it is constantly exposed to mutations during sperm production,” explains Graves.

“Sperm production involves numerous cell divisions, each susceptible to mutations that can substantially affect the chromosomes. Moreover, the Y chromosome cannot engage in genetic exchange, hindering its ability to repair mutations effectively.”

Most chromosomes repair mutations by exchanging DNA with their counterpart chromosome, a process known as recombination. However, the Y chromosome, inherited singly unlike the dual X chromosomes in women, lacks this mechanism for genetic exchange.

What does this mean for the future of the male species?

Compared to its original state, the human Y chromosome has lost 97% of ancestral genes, while the X chromosome remains relatively intact.

What are the implications of this rapid degeneration for the male species? Are we on the verge of a world devoid of human males?

“When I mention rapid degeneration, I refer to an evolutionary timeframe. Sex chromosomes have undergone roughly 180 million years of evolution in mammals. It took this long for the Y chromosome to erode to its current state,” notes Graves.

“The impending loss of the Y chromosome has stirred concern in some quarters. A rough estimate suggests it might take another six or seven million years before the chromosome completely disappears.”

Unless global billionaires achieve immortality breakthroughs, humans may never witness the initial stages of Y chromosome degradation. But hypothetically, what might this development entail?

While some species can reproduce through parthenogenesis (unfertilized egg development), humans require sperm-bearing genes for optimal functioning. These genomically imprinted genes necessitate male involvement for reproduction. However, viable alternatives exist.

“Evolving new sex-determining genes could pave the way, as seen in certain rodent species like the eastern European mole rat and Japanese spiny rat, which lack a Y chromosome entirely. These rodents adapted by relocating crucial Y chromosome genes to other chromosomes.”

Although successful in rodents, this strategy may not yield the same results in humans. While creating new sex genes is feasible, the ensuing clash between old and new genes poses uncertainties.

“This gene conflict scenario could potentially lead to divergent sex-determining systems across human populations,” Graves explains. At present, these speculations predominate. While the Y chromosome’s deterioration is evident, the future outcomes remain uncertain, encompassing the possibility of evolutionary changes resulting in new sexes.

Given the Y chromosome’s peculiarities and the substantial human population, Graves suggests that an individual born without a Y chromosome might already exist somewhere in the world, broaching intriguing evolutionary prospects.

Bisexual women anticipate achieving orgasms more frequently with women than with men

For women, consuming this type of kimchi two to three times a day was associated with an 8% lower obesity rate, and consuming one to two times a day was associated with a 6% lower incidence of abdominal obesity.

It was found that eating less than the average amount of gakdugi kimchi reduced obesity rates by about 9% for both men and women.

Consumption of 25 g/day for men and 11 g/day for women reduced the risk of abdominal obesity by 8% (men) to 11% (women) compared to no intake.
