A Mysterious Streak in the Universe: The Enigma Remains Unsolved

The asymmetry in the average temperature of the cosmic microwave background is inconsistent with the standard model of cosmology

Cosmic anomalies have puzzled scientists for years, and recent examinations of data from various radio telescopes further complicate the understanding of their origins.

This peculiar fluctuation appears in the afterglow of the Big Bang, representing radiation that has journeyed toward us since the dawn of time, referred to as the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Physicists generally expect this radiation to be uniform in all directions; therefore, significant deviations are perplexing. Current measurements indicate a gradient in CMB temperatures, resulting in colder and hotter areas known as a dipole, as explained by Lucas Behme. His team at Bielefeld University in Germany utilized data from radio telescopes to delve deeply into these anomalies.

Böhme notes that while the presence of the CMB dipole isn’t surprising, its magnitude defies the expectations of our prevailing cosmological models. Radiation emitted from moving sources—and perceived by observers who are also in motion—appears warmer or colder due to the Doppler effect and other relativistic effects. Yet, the dipole observed is approximately ten times more intense than anticipated.

To analyze this discrepancy, Böhme and his colleagues examined data from six radio telescopes and meticulously narrowed their focus to the three most precise measurements. Böhme describes their method as dividing the sky into pixels to determine the number of radiation sources within each. Nevertheless, despite their exhaustive adjustments, the dipole mystery endured.

Dragan Huterer from the University of Michigan finds the team’s thorough analysis noteworthy. He emphasizes that this is crucial for establishing the dipole as an undeniable feature of the CMB. “This is a significant insight, indicating that we fundamentally misunderstand our spatial context within the universe, or that our most accurate theories fail to align with the evidence,” he states. However, Huterer also points out the challenges inherent in accurately measuring radio astronomical data, which may result in systematic errors.

Part of the difficulty lies in the faintness of the radio signals collected, Böhme explains. “We aim to measure extremely subtle phenomena. Fine-tuning this measurement is challenging,” he notes. Yet, this is not the only evidence supporting the existence of the dipole. Infrared radiation from quasars tends to reinforce the findings from radio wave measurements, and forthcoming telescopes may enhance precision in observations, potentially resolving some of the dipole’s enigmas.

Maintain Your Streak: Harnessing Daily Habits for a Healthy Life or Destructive Obsession

aAnyone who saw the run that Tom Vickery uploaded to the sports-tracking app Strava on February 18th of last year might have been a little confused. The 30-minute sprint appeared to be taking place in the middle of the Channel, not far from Guernsey, toward the west coast of France. And, oddly enough, the run was in a straight line, as measured by a ruler, and was shown on Vickery’s public profile as a one-inch, unbending orange line within a blue swath of the app’s virtual ocean. Oh, and it was on world-record-breaking pace.

Of course, it probably came as no surprise to anyone who knows Vickery. The 38-year-old triathlon coach from Cambridge was on holiday to Bilbao for a two-day ferry trip, and this fairly fast jog was just one of almost four years of daily runs he had been recording on Strava at the time. Determined not to break the record on board, Vickery got up at 5am and spent his allotted 30 minutes sprinting up and down the deck. As the boat slid through the water, he appeared to be running faster than any long-distance runner in the world.

This is just one example of the lengths some people will go to to maintain a “streak.” A streak is something (actually anything) that continues uninterrupted over a period of time. It’s a form of gamification: the process of adding game-like elements to a task to make it more engaging. Perhaps the most famous “streak holder” is British runner Ron Hill, who ran every day for 52 years and 39 days (or 19,032 consecutive days), even going for a jog the day after breaking his sternum in a car accident in 1993.

Hill, a scientist, used to keep a diary of his runs, but more recently, advances in technology have made it possible to keep track of streaks in a more streamlined and user-friendly way. For example, on Snapchat, the word “streak” is part of the lexicon. A “snap streak” is the number of consecutive days that a user sends “snaps,” either photos or messages, to other users. To maintain a snap streak, a user must send a snap within a 24-hour period or the streak ends.

It's hard to say when it became a daily habit. There were stops and starts. Days when I couldn't think of anything. But little by little, it became non-negotiable. Wake up. Please check the time. Send a snap. Every day for 2,450 consecutive days. I sent fleeting moments spanning almost seven years to a friend on the other side of the world.


Sarah has seen my sleepy eyes and the view of my dresser from my bed more than anyone else on earth. I don't know why I decided my Snapchat streak would be most important, but it became a priority in April 2017, almost four years after I downloaded the app and started using it haphazardly.

We are currently experiencing one of the longest snap streaks in the history of the app. Snapchat doesn't make that information public, so we don't know where they are on the ladder, but they recently ranked among the top 10 sites that collect that data.

When I recently asked her what this streak meant to her, she said, “Tangible proof that someone special is thinking of you at least once a day, even on your worst day.” “It's very reassuring to have that,” she said, and it's true. During some particularly difficult moments, that was the only voice I heard outside of my head.
