Top Abbreviations: Maximizing AI Benefits – Year-End Awards

feedback A weekly column filled with strange stories, unbelievable advertising claims, and puzzling instructions.

An amazing year

To be new scientist Readers know that yearly summaries are prepared weeks beforehand. This specific recap was written on December 1st, just as Feedback was gearing up to avoid hearing Wham’s last christmas for 24 days. I’m also trying to persuade Feedback Junior to choose his main present. Any absurd events that occurred after that date will have to wait until the next year.

Indeed, 2025 offered a wealth of topics that intrigued Feedback. We encountered ludicrous ideas, such as the proposition to detonate the ocean floor to combat climate change, which went directly into our “not recommended” list. There were also endeavors to create particularly annoying robots, including an electric arm that faked handing you an ice cream cone, only for it to vanish in various amusing ways at the last moment. Unsurprisingly, people were distrustful.

To impose some structure on this chaos, we are introducing the 2025 End of Year Awards for Feedback. We will name it Backseas unless someone provides a better suggestion. The judges (that’s us) selected the categories and winners through a highly rigorous process that did not involve post-its or darts.

Best Scientific Acronyms

Feedback dreams of seeing a study that investigates the amount of time and resources societies dedicate to crafting imaginative or forced abbreviations. This could rival two seasons of influenza and a World Cup for global productivity.

After discovering a “machine learning model that can predict the taste of chemicals based on their molecular structure” labeled Flavor Analysis and Recognition Transformer (FART), Feedback invited contributions on similar topics. We were taken aback by the flood of acronyms that followed, from a hydrographic research project called Management of River Discharges to the Marine Domain (MORDOR) to two instruments on NASA’s Mars rover Perseverance called Raman and Luminescence Scanning of Habitable Environments for Organics and Chemicals (SHERLOC) and another pair known as Wide Angle Terrain Sensor for Operations and Engineering (WATSON). However, one may be pushing the envelope.

Regardless, the judges (us) unanimously awarded the prize to a geneticist who devised “a method for estimating mutation rates and recent demographic history from very large samples.” They termed it “diffusion of rare elements in large variation inventories,” or DR EVIL. Quite clever.

The Best Old and New Technology

One persistent issue in today’s society is people who believe they’ve invented something novel when they’ve merely rebranded something existing. Here, there was a clear winner. Ugmonk has developed a “minimalist, paper-based to-do manager.” This product is designed to take the place of your online task management system, allowing you to work offline free from social media distractions. It consists of a few index cards placed atop a wooden block.

Best Extrapolation

Uncontested: Demographers David Swanson and Jeff Tyman produced a paper that noted a slight decrease in human fertility between 2019 and 2024 before extrapolating it all the way to human extinction by 2339 (or 2415 if they obtain an additional year of data).

Maximizing AI’s Potential

The challenge here was variety. An overwhelming amount of choices. We almost awarded this to Anthropic, which had the AI Claude operate a vending machine in their office. Claude first requested customers to deposit money into a fictitious bank account. Then it pretended to be a human in a blue blazer and red tie. However, since it was an in-house trial, it was disqualified.

Instead, this award goes to AI music. The most renowned fake AI band, Velvet Sundown, resembles the uncanny offspring of Coldplay and the Eagles. There’s an indescribable quality to this. After training on nearly all recorded music, the AI generates the most unremarkable form of music imaginable.

And Finally…

I’ll conclude with a silly and somewhat inappropriate tale. Time and again in 2025, Feedback found itself grappling with the Scunthorpe issue, which refers to how many innocent words can contain character strings that are offensive in certain contexts, causing complications for online moderation systems.

This realization began when we learned that Virgin Money’s chatbot objected to the term ‘virgin’. From there, we heard of a student who couldn’t create an email account due to his last name, Peacock, along with an incident that hindered researchers studying sperm whales.

However, our favorite story involved a bank’s computer server refusing to interact with a French-language server named after the Asterix character Petitsuitx because it contained the word “tits.” We appreciated this anecdote because a reader, Nick Brown, shared it with us, suggesting that banks utilizing such poorly constructed servers were likely headed for insolvency.

The ceremony, held at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion, was a safe space for hyper-online people. The brand activation encouraged guests to pose in elaborate photo settings. Creators in the audience brought portable ring lights and live-streamed TikTok from their seats throughout the night. That meant crowds were often uncomfortably quiet during awards ceremonies, as it was difficult to clap and hold a cell phone at the same time. It was impossible to use the bathroom without accidentally crashing a TikTok being filmed in the mirror.

The first VTuber Awards crowns VR as the winner

Currently streaming, Philian took to the center stage of a huge arena, illuminated by purple spotlights and surrounded by throngs of fans holding penlights. The streamer opened the show wearing a bright purple skirt, magenta bow tie, and high white boots that matched her jacket. This is a luxurious version of her avatar’s regular sailor style school uniform. Philian said in his opening remarks, “’Please be patient. This show uses a lot of technology and is truly live.’ It’s not rocket science, but it could be.” Philian, a streamer with over 766,000 Twitch followers, hosted his first annual event VTuber Award last weekend. Like many of his VTubers (a portmanteau for “virtual YouTuber”), Philian keeps his identity secret, streaming using a digital model of himself instead of revealing his real face. Filian was physically hosting the ceremony from a sealed green box in WePlay’s Los Angeles studio, a space typically used for esports events.

The virtual reality awards show is the first of its kind for VTuber as well as for his production company WePlay, which has focused primarily on hosting and producing in-person gaming tournaments from studios in Los Angeles and Kiev for the past decade. One of his first ever. From a niche streaming genre billion dollar industry in recent years. The show was a first for VTubers and WePlay, which produced a live VR event.

The event combined WePlay’s physical production space with a VR stadium. VTubers are also widely recognized in other shows.of streamer award has a “Best VTuber” category, and VTuber Ironmouse won at this year’s Game Awards. He became the first animation streamer to win Content Creator of the Year. However, neither award takes into account skills unique to VTubers, such as avatar design, technological innovation, and hosting virtual events. For example, the Best Technical VTuber award went to vedal987, a streamer and programmer who developed the chatbot VTuber. Mr. Neurouses text-to-speech and AI to play games and communicate with your Twitch audience.

“VTubers are often treated as a footnote, sometimes as something unique and weird at any award show,” Filian said in an interview with TechCrunch. An offshoot of idol culture, it took off outside of Asia when VTuber production company Hololive debuted its first English-speaking streamer. The VTuber Awards will recognize not only individual content creators, but also VTuber viewers, as fans have propelled the genre into mainstream recognition. In addition to the Most Avid Fanbase category, the VTuber Awards also includes a category for his VTuber Clippers, who clip, curate, and post VTuber content online.

“YouTube, which in many ways created a huge demand for VTubers,” Philian continued. “When VTubers finally came to the West, it was poised to explode. I can’t stress enough how important the VTuber clipper was and was for VTubers to be where they are today. There’s no such thing as too much if… In many ways, VTubers are typically more engaged with their fans than many other creators.” Although motion capture technology is not new to the film and video game industries, incorporating it into live streaming events has been difficult. In a control room, a crew member juggled dozens of screens and displayed Philian’s avatar on a virtual stage and others who participated or presented awards.

Baldur’s Gate 3 wins top award at The Game Awards 2023, but show faces criticism for short speech and dismissal

RPG game Baldur’s Gate 3 has been honored as Game of the Year at the largest awards ceremony in the industry. This game, which was released earlier this year for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox, surprised reviewers with its expansive world and story that allows players to influence the game through their choices. Inspired by the classic Dungeons and Dragons tabletop game, it is one of the most acclaimed titles of the year, beating out other popular games like Alan Wake 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Resident Evil 4, and Super Mario Bros.

Belgian developer Larian won six awards at the event, including Best Multiplayer and Role-Playing Game, for Baldur’s Gate 3. Alan Wake 2, created by Finnish studio Remedy, won Best Narrative, Best Game Direction, and Best Art Direction. Other winners included Nintendo’s latest Zelda and Mario titles, Xbox’s Forza Horizon racing series, and the long-running Final Fantasy series. However, Spider-Man 2, one of the most nominated games, did not receive any awards.

The Game Awards are known for showcasing trailers and advertisements for new games, and this year was no different. It included a collaboration between game creator Hideo Kojima and Hollywood director Jordan Peele, as well as the announcement that Matthew McConaughey will play the lead role in the upcoming sci-fi action game “Exodus.” Additionally, a new Jurassic Park game, Survival, was announced, and trailers for new releases from popular game series like Prince of Persia and Monster Hunter were shown.

While the awards show attracted over 103 million viewers last year, the host, Geoff Keighley, was criticized for spending too much time on trailers during this year’s event and failing to acknowledge industry layoffs. Some awards were announced without the winners being invited on stage, and the winners had little time to give their acceptance speeches.

The complete list of game winners included Baldur’s Gate 3 for Game of the Year, Alan Wake 2 for Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction, and several other games in various categories such as Best Multiplayer, Best Family Game, Best RPG, and Most Anticipated Game.
