Four Crucial Figures That Could Transform the ‘Masculinity Crisis’ Discussion

Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg asserts that businesses require greater “masculine energy.” Former President Donald Trump claims that “humanity is under attack.” The US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, contends that the Boy Scouts have deviated from their mission of “cultivating masculine values,” and their “boy-friendly space” is at risk.

These voices are not isolated. They are influential figures articulating sentiments that resonate with many men, particularly younger generations, in recent times.

A 2025 study indicates that Gen Z men and women are the most divided generation regarding gender equality, as reported by Ipsos UK and King’s College London’s Global Women’s Leadership Institute.

The survey discovered that 60% of Gen Z men feel pressured to exceed expectations in supporting equality, while 57% believe that society discriminates against men by overemphasizing women’s equality.

What’s driving this divide? Notable statistics suggest a significant crisis might be emerging for men.

For example, men in the United States have, on average, a life expectancy of five years less than women; this gap is more pronounced in recent years. They are now three times more likely to die from drug overdoses and have a fourfold higher risk of suicide.

Beyond these grim statistics, there’s other evidence indicating that men face emerging challenges, particularly in education.

Research from Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan think tank, found that in 1995, young men and women were equally likely to obtain a bachelor’s degree, with approximately one in four completing it. By 2024, however, 47% of women aged 25 to 34 will have earned a degree, compared to only 37% of men, with women’s degree attainment increasing at a much higher rate.

Gender disparities are also visible in schooling. A 2018 study of eighth graders nationwide revealed that while math achievement was comparable, girls consistently outperformed boys in English.

This influence continues post-education. Over the five decades preceding the COVID-19 pandemic, men’s participation in the U.S. workforce declined by about 10%; furthermore, there were additional decreases in the following years.

Yet, these alarming figures represent only part of the narrative. Although men encounter distinct challenges, the data does not suggest that current efforts toward gender equality have exceeded reasonable bounds, despite claims from some in positions of authority. Four frequently cited statistics illustrate the nuanced reality of the situation.

1. Men Report Higher Happiness Levels.

Despite men’s struggles with well-being, surveys indicate that men are generally happier and more satisfied with their lives than women. A 2024 cross-country study found strong evidence that men currently experience higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction than women.

Using data from the U.S. General Social Survey, researchers noted that average happiness levels for men and women were quite similar from 1973 to 2021. However, during the pandemic, happiness levels plummeted for both genders, with women’s satisfaction experiencing a sharper decline.

Moreover, European survey data indicated that men reported higher happiness than women across various dimensions, including calmness, sleep quality, cheerfulness, loneliness, and anxiety.

2. Men Earn 20% More Than Women.

In terms of earnings, men consistently earn more than women worldwide. According to the United Nations, women’s salaries are approximately 20% lower, a gap that is less favorable than men’s earnings.

This implies that, on average, women earn about 80 cents for every dollar earned by men globally. In the U.S., although the gap has narrowed over the years, women working full-time earn 83% of their male counterparts’ income in 2023.

3. 90% of the Most Powerful Positions Are Held by Men.

Men substantially dominate leadership roles in both government and business.

Worldwide, women are represented in only about 27% of parliamentary seats, meaning that men hold approximately three-quarters of these positions.

Additionally, as of October 2024, only one-tenth of countries globally have a woman in a top government role.

Similarly, a pattern persists in business, where despite a record number of women leading major corporations in the U.S., 55 out of the Fortune 500 have female CEOs.

4. Men Enjoy More Leisure Time.

Another frequently overlooked aspect is that men typically have more leisure time compared to women.

According to recent data shows that American men spend roughly 45 minutes more daily on leisure activities, while women dedicate an extra hour and 20 minutes to unpaid tasks such as housework, shopping, and caregiving.

This disparity is evident to varying degrees in nearly all surveyed countries. In Norway, the difference is minimal, at 4 minutes per day in 2020, while in Portugal, it reaches nearly an hour and a half (89 minutes).

The Real Gender Story

When considered together, these statistics reveal a far more intricate picture than the “male crisis” narrative suggests.

While there are undeniable concerns about men’s health, education, and economic participation, men still hold a disproportionate amount of power, earn higher wages, and enjoy more leisure time.

There isn’t a singular narrative on either side that captures these complexities.

As Professor Jeon Hee-jung, director of King’s Global Women’s Leadership Institute, posits, framing this moment as a crisis of masculinity is misguided. The actual issue is one of opportunity crisis, particularly for the youth.

“We haven’t equipped our boys to understand that the current patriarchal system is detrimental to them as well,” she remarks.

Chung describes the past few decades as a “revolutionary stagnation.” While society has indeed made strides in “masculinizing” women by integrating more women into the workforce and promoting roles in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), societal expectations surrounding caregiving, primary breadwinning, and domestic responsibilities have largely remained unchanged.

Consequently, Chung asserts, the system has been partially rewired, leading to a disconnect and increased friction for all.

“Gender tensions divert attention from real issues, which are the structural changes occurring in society and the various disparities among income groups,” she adds.

In essence, we find ourselves in an unsettling transition between outdated models that are no longer viable and new frameworks that have yet to fully materialize.

This turmoil may evoke a sense of discomfort, but as we progress, the gender gap could begin to lessen, allowing us to tackle the deeper issues influencing people’s lives, as Chung envisions.

Broboost: Women Find That Faking Masculinity Increases LinkedIn Engagement

DAre your LinkedIn followers viewing you as a “thought leader”? Do numerous commenters laud your strategies for “scaling” your startup? Do recruiters slide into your DMs “to explore potential synergies”?

If the answer is no, it could be tied to your gender.

Multiple women took part in an experiment on LinkedIn this week, sparked by viral posts suggesting that altering one’s gender to “male” could enhance visibility on the platform.

Others have reported that by modifying their profiles and using business jargon like “drive,” “transform,” and “accelerate,” they experienced an uptick in engagement.

This surge in engagement has led some to speculate that LinkedIn’s algorithm may harbor biases, making men who utilize typical business language more visible.

Similar to many large social media platforms, LinkedIn employs algorithms to determine which posts reach users, elevating some while downgrading others.

In a blog post last Thursday, LinkedIn acknowledged this phenomenon but stated it doesn’t factor in “demographic information” when deciding who receives visibility. Instead, they mentioned that “hundreds of signals” contribute to a post’s performance.

“Changing your profile gender does not influence how your content is displayed in searches or your feed,” a representative stated. Yet, anecdotes continue to circulate.

“It was quite thrilling,” shared Simone Bonnet, a social media consultant based in Oxford, who altered her pronouns to “he/him” and updated her name to “Simon E.” on LinkedIn earlier this week.

“Right now, I’m witnessing a staggering 1,600% increase in profile views, a significant figure given our current social media engagement. We’re also observing a 1,300% rise in impressions, with similar trends in reach statistics.”

Megan Cornish, a communications strategist at a mental health tech firm, began experimenting with her LinkedIn profile after noticing a drop in her reach earlier this year.

Initially, she changed her gender to “male.” Then, she utilized ChatGPT to rewrite her profile in a “male-coded” manner, drawing from a LinkedIn post that suggested favoring “agency” words like “strategic” and “leader.”

Lastly, she prompted ChatGPT to revamp an old, underperforming post from months prior using similarly “agent-like” language to discern how “peer coding” was influencing reach.

The results were favorable. Shortly after, her LinkedIn reach soared by 415% in the week following the changes. She penned an article about her experience, which went viral, gathering nearly 5,000 interactions.

However, she disliked the outcome. Previously, she described her posts as “soft,” combining “succinctness and intelligence with warmth and humanity.” Now, as “Brother Megan,” she felt assertive and confident, “akin to a white man strolling about.”

She decided to stop after a week. “I had initially intended to do this for an entire month. Each day, as things improved, I became increasingly irritated.”

Not every individual shared the positive experiences of Cornish and Bonnet. Cath Cooper, a technology and social media writer, stated she changed her gender to “male” and later identified her race as “white” (despite being Black). She reported a decline in her profile’s reach and engagement. Other women of color on the platform recounted similar experiences here.

“We understand that algorithms have biases, yet it’s challenging to ascertain how or why they behave a certain way in specific situations,” she noted.

While Cooper found the LinkedIn experiment “frustrating,” she believes it mirrors broader social biases. “I’m not disillusioned with the platform; I’m more dissatisfied with the lack of progress in society.”

User discusses LinkedIn’s hybrid role as both a business and a social network, a trend that has emerged since the pandemic blurred professional boundaries and normalized oversharing in the workplace. LinkedIn often encourages extreme “peer coding.” The platform’s most visible accounts highlight the extremes of this behavior here.

These recent “bro-coding” experiments stem from what Cornish, Bonnet, and others suggest is an algorithm shift that has notably lessened female creators’ visibility. This spurred a series of informal experiments earlier this year, where women and men across similar industries posted identical content, revealing significant disparities in reach.

What purpose does LinkedIn serve? An AI system categorizes posts according to content and the professional identity and skills of the user to determine their spread. The company claims to routinely assess its algorithms, including “monitoring for gender-related disparities.”

A spokesperson from LinkedIn indicated that the recent reduction in reach for some users may be attributed to a significant increase in content on the platform, noting that comments surged by 24% over the past quarter, alongside a proportional rise in video uploads.

In Bonnet’s perspective, “peer coding” is on the rise. “While people once viewed LinkedIn as a more sophisticated, business-focused space, that perception is fading. It’s rapidly becoming the Wild West.”

More male than male

In general, we suspect, along with most readers, that feedback has been cast to explain how the world has become in its current position. So we were intrigued by journalist Michael Hobbs. Post to the social media site Blueskyhighlights the 2013 paper American Journal of Sociology Called “Excessive Gender: A Test of Masculine Overcompensation Papers.”

The hypothesis is that when male masculinity is threatened, it is overcompensated as an “extreme demonstration of masculinity.” For example, when men were told they were feminine, they responded by expressing more support for the “dominant hierarchy” and said they wanted more personal strength. They also became more supportive of war and homophobia.

But the bit that caught Hobbes' attention is that they were interested in purchasing a sports utility vehicle (SUV) because it was so ridiculous.

Reading all this, I found that feedback stares into the universe, but the faces of famous people flashed in the past. It reminded me of singer James Blunt when he was interviewed on Jesse Ware's podcast. Table etiquette. He admitted that he had followed in college. A meat-only meal to prove his manliness and annoy his vegan friends– You'll just be diagnosed with scurvy.

We recall many examples of right-wing male men who confessed on social media that they did not believe in the existence of female orgasms.

It reminded me that Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg's trash cans were talking to each other during the proposed cage battle for a year. And we thought those sociologists might have the point.

Ready and not ready

We are all trying to adapt to the rise of artificial intelligence, but the next technological revolution is Quantum Computers. Thanks to issue 3530, regular readers will already know this. But what about all the poor souls who didn't pick it up?

As a result of this upcoming power of quantum computing, leaders need to “understand the organizational change needed to lead the quantum era through a structured approach to business transformation tailored to the organization's objectives.” They need to “run Quantum Application Roadmap” for businesses that “assess the impact of Quantum.” In other words, do some research, plan, and do it. You really can't put financial value on advice that combines quality and originality to that extent.

The problem, of course, is that we don't know if quantum computers will be useful or if they will be of any exact help. So, while companies may spend a lot of time preparing for a quantum future, we see that surprisingly different quantum futures actually occur.

In a very realistic sense, even if the company is quantum-enabled, it is not quantum-enabled. If there is a thought experiment that could explain such a situation.

How to leave the planet

Given the state of things mentioned above, feedback sometimes makes me wonder if we might depart Planet Earth for a new meadow. Certainly space travel plagues dangers like metstone strikes, intense radiation, and true heart-wrenching scales of interstellar distance.

However, on the other hand, the grass may have greenery. In the idol moment, we may be able to fantasize that the approaching asteroid 2024 YR4 is a disguised flying saucer and cover the lift into the Alpha Centauri.

So when we learn, we can imagine our surprise through sustainability consultant Niki Rus Unusual LinkedIn Recruitment Certainly.com. A company called Black Book Resourcing Ltd wanted it “Pioner Colonists – Mars Village Program.” Responsibilities include “establishing and maintaining a life support system,” “generating power and managing resources for long-term survival” (just a little of the understatement here), “working as a team under extreme conditions.”

A rather long list of “essential requirements” includes “peak physical and mental endurance” and “backgrounds for engineering, medicine, botany, geology, or survival skills.” Confusingly, this list requires both “completely isolated adaptability and resilience” and “strong teamwork and leadership skills.” Finally, you should have “Don't depend on the luxury of the earth, only grit and resolve.” “Previous Experiences in Extreme Environments” is optional.

Not everything is in a hurry: the listing has expired and we are not at all sure it is authentic. Moreover, given the frankly intense requirements, the feedback was surprised to see that the proposed salary was between £60,000 and £100,000 a year. However, the company deserves credit for listing the work as “permanent.” That will definitely be the case. Bonus points for the location. This is described simply as “remote”.
