Reclaiming Control: How to Override Your Brain’s Autopilot Mode

Conscious decisions are only a fraction of your daily actions. The majority of what you do is dictated by habits, as outlined in recent research featured in Psychology and Health.

This research indicates that approximately two-thirds of daily actions occur automatically, triggered by familiar surroundings, timing, or established routines. Essentially, much of our lives are lived on autopilot.

According to Professor Benjamin Gardner, one of the study’s co-authors, “Psychologists describe habits as associations of Cu and Bijavia.” As he noted in BBC Science Focus, “For instance, when I start a task, it automatically prompts me to make tea… Without these habits, we’d be overwhelmed by the need to think through every action we take.”

The research team monitored 105 individuals in the UK and Australia, sending them notifications six times a week to inquire about their activities and whether those actions were intentional or habitual.

Upon analyzing the data, they found that 65% of the actions were habit-driven, 88% were at least partially performed on autopilot, and 76% aligned with the individuals’ conscious goals.

This last statistic is crucial. Rather than diminishing our intentions, many habits actually support their achievement.

Gardner stated, “There’s nothing intrinsically good or bad about a habit itself. If it aids in achieving your goals, it’s a positive habit. If it hinders them, it’s a negative habit.”

The most frequently reported activities included work, educational or volunteer efforts, national or parenting responsibilities, and screen time. Interestingly, exercise was notable as an exception; while many initiated it automatically, conscious effort was still necessary.

The findings point to the potential for using habits to enhance public health and individual well-being. For instance, pairing a new movement with a dependable cue—like exercising after work—can help establish that routine. Breaking old habits, such as substituting chewing gum after meals for smoking, may prove more effective than relying solely on willpower.

When attempting to change a habit, Gardner suggests keeping a record over several days of where you are, the time, and the environment when the habit starts. “Tracking this for a week should help reveal what triggers the habit.”

Ultimately, habits shouldn’t be seen as adversaries to free will. “Habits are incredibly beneficial; they conserve mental energy for other tasks,” Gardner explained. “Despite their negative image, it’s essential to realize that automating many of your desired actions is advantageous.”

Professor Grace Vincent, a sleep scientist at the University of Central Queensland and co-author of the study, agrees: “When you work on cultivating positive habits—whether it’s for sleep hygiene, nutrition, or general health improvement—you can depend on your internal ‘autopilot’ to help establish and maintain these habits.”

Drag X Drive Review: Wheelchair Basketball in Wrist Convulsion Mouse Mode | Gaming Insights

wA new console has hit the market, and it typically comes with at least one first-party title designed to highlight its innovative features. The PlayStation 5 showcases Astro’s Playroom, the Steam Deck has Aperture Desk Job, and the Nintendo Switch 2 boasts Drag X Drive. In this game, you will engage in competitive wheelchair basketball using Joy-Con 2’s new mouse mode (where you control the gameplay by sliding the joystick across a desk like a computer mouse). While it offers a solid demonstration of controller enhancements, Drag X Drive capitalizes on the high-energy nature of real sports and introduces a shallow spoofing element.

As a basketball game, Drag X Drive has you spending the majority of your time shooting hoops and dashing around the court. You can press the trigger to lift the wheels for a jump, raise each Joy-Con and flick to shoot, or pass the ball to teammates.

The thrill of joy… Drag X Drive. Photo: Nintendo

While this practical approach seems appealing, it isn’t as intuitive as one might hope, and ironically, accessibility is limited. Finding a comfortable position while pushing and rolling your palm is tricky, necessitating effort to truly grasp the control scheme. However, once you push through the initial difficulties, there’s an uncommon thrill in nailing a shot or assisting a teammate.

The Player Styles menu offers several additional gameplay options, enabling you to switch between different presets based on your playstyle. You can adopt a balanced forward style, evenly distributing rebound, strength, and speed skills, or choose a guard style that prioritizes speed at the cost of other stats. The ability to shift styles enhances the rocky onboarding experience and revitalizes gameplay in online multiplayer matches, a crucial aspect of the game.

At face value, Drag X Drive captures the essence of vehicle-based football games like Rocket League, where two teams compete by scoring points through trick shots and collisions. Yet, while Rocket League features vibrant arenas and dynamic graphics, Drag X Drive opts for a more restrained, atmospheric environment marked by its cold metallic aesthetic. The character customization menu allows you to change the colors of your wheels and chairs or select quirky accessories like cat ears and vintage driving goggles, but it lacks the warmth and whimsical charm typical of Nintendo.

There’s an adrenaline rush, even amidst the challenges of managing character control and potential wrist fatigue, especially as your success hinges on your real-world stamina and players can easily pursue you. There’s a genuine sense of achievement when you nail a long-distance shot or execute clever assists. As you build confidence, you can start to exploit the halfpipes around the court, performing tricks to earn bonus points. A simple shot can transform into an impressive slam dunk, giving you a real sense of professionalism.

Throughout the basketball match, you’ll encounter some repetitive side activities, including jump rope mini-games, shooting contests, and obstacle courses. Excelling in these challenges and performing well in matches allows you to earn trophies, unlocking more cosmetics and enhancing your avatar’s aesthetic.

Despite some efforts to incorporate meta progression, the significant shortcomings of Drag X Drive become apparent over time. The gameplay can be cumbersome for extended sessions. While the mouse controls are theoretically intriguing and feel innovative during shorter matches, they start to falter in a fast-paced context. What remains are surprisingly inaccessible sports mechanics, lacking versatility and long-term engagement. Fans hoping for a spiritual successor to Nintendo’s earlier Rock ’em Sock ’em Brawler will likely be left disappointed.

Drag X Drive is currently available for £16.99

Google Unveils “AI Mode” as Next Step in Redefining Search Experience

On Tuesday, Google introduced a new surge of artificial intelligence capabilities, transforming how users access information and expediting a year-long evolution of search engines that has reduced internet traffic to other sites.

At its annual developer conference, Google unveiled a novel “AI Mode” in the US, designed to facilitate conversations with experts who can respond to a wide variety of questions during searches.

This AI mode will be available to all US users just two months after its initial testing in the limited Labs division.

Additionally, Google plans to integrate its latest AI model, Gemini 2.5, into the search algorithms and trial new features such as the ability to automatically purchase concert tickets and sift through live video feeds.

In a bold move, Google announced its re-entrance into the smart glasses sector, introducing a new version powered by Android XR. This announcement comes 13 years after the launch of Google Glass, which was withdrawn due to public privacy concerns.

While the release date and pricing for the Android XR glasses remain undisclosed, Google indicated they are being developed in collaboration with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. These glasses will compete with offerings from platforms like Facebook’s parent Meta and Ray-Ban.

This expansion builds on a transformation initiated a year prior, introducing an “AI Overview” that is increasingly featuring at the top of the search results page, altering conventional web link rankings.

Google reports that approximately 1.5 billion users are currently engaging with the “AI Overview,” with many now inputting longer, more intricate queries.

“Our progress indicates that we are entering a new stage in the AI platform evolution, where years of research are turning into practical applications for people globally,” stated Google CEO Sundar Pichai during his address to attendees at the amphitheater near the company’s Mountain View, California headquarters.

Although Pichai and other executives suggested the AI overview would drive more searches and clicks to external sites, data from search optimization firm BrightEdge reveals that this has not yet been the case.

BrightEdge’s recent findings indicate that click-through rates from Google search results have dipped nearly 30% over the past year.

The decision to make AI modes widely available after a brief testing period underscores Google’s assurance that the technology won’t routinely disseminate misinformation, thus protecting its reputation amidst escalating competition from AI-enhanced search platforms like ChatGPT.

The swift emergence of AI alternatives is a consistent theme in legal proceedings allowing Google to dismantle parts of its internet dominance after a federal court deemed search engines a monopoly last year.

In testimony during a trial earlier this month, veteran Apple executive Eddy Cue mentioned a decrease in Google searches made via Safari on iPhones.

Google links this decline to the rise of AI, which is prompting necessary adaptations in how search engines function as technology reshapes the competitive landscape.

Despite its increasing reliance on AI, Google appears to maintain its position as the primary gateway to the Internet, a key reason why its parent company, Alphabet Inc., boasts a market value of $2 trillion.

According to data from oneLittleweb.com, Google attracted 136 billion visits in the year ending in March.

During an interview, an Associated Press reporter inquired whether the implementation of AI modes would strengthen Google, noting the unlikelihood of AI technology causing significant harm to its search engines.

The AI mode acknowledged that its implementation is likely to enhance Google’s influence, especially regarding information accessibility and online engagement, while cautioning web publishers about potential traffic declines from search results.

Upcoming tests in Google’s Labs division aim to introduce new waves of AI technology expected to be rolled out to consumers.

These tests include features that enable AI agents to book tickets and restaurant reservations using Project Mariner Technology, as well as experiments with live video and opt-in features, granting AI access to users’ Gmail and other Google apps for increased understanding of preferences and behaviors. Furthermore, this summer’s test lineup features a “deep search” tool and a new option for creating visual presentations of sports and finance data.

Google will also offer a subscription package called “Ultra,” providing 30 terabytes of storage for $250 a month, representing a significant upgrade from its previous “Top of the Line” offer, now known as “AI Pro,” which costs $20 a month and includes just two terabytes of storage.

Physicists at CERN Discover Intriguing New Decay Mode of Mesons

Physicists from LHCb collaboration at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have made the first observation of the collapse of the Bc+ meson. This results in a J/ψ charm-anticharm quark bound state (consisting of two heavy quarks, b and c) and a pair of pions π+π0. This new decay process shows a contribution from an intermediate particle, the ρ+ meson, which forms for a short time and then decays into π+π0 pairs.

The Bc+ is the heaviest meson and decays only through weak interactions due to the decay of one heavy constituent quark.

It decays into an odd number of optical hadrons, and J/ψ (or another attractive and anti-attractive quark-bound state called Charmonia) has been intensively studied and found to be in remarkable agreement with theoretical predictions.

The decay of Bc+ to J/ψ and π+π0 pairs is the simplest decay to charmonium and even-numbered optical hadrons.

This has never been observed before. The main reason for this is that in the LHC proton-proton collision environment, it is very difficult to accurately reconstruct low-energy π0 mesons through their decay into a pair of photons.

“Accurate measurements of the Bc+→J/ψπ+π0 decay will allow us to better understand its possible contribution as a background source for the study of other decays of Bc mesons and rare decays of B0 mesons,” said the LHCb physicist.

From a theoretical point of view, J/ψ and the decay of Bc into an even number of pions are closely related to the decay of the τ lepton into an even number of pions and the e+e- annihilation into an even number of pions.

Accurate measurements of e+e- annihilation into two pions in the ρ mass region (like the Bc decay discussed here) are possible using the Fermilab G-2 experiment, which measures the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of the muon and is important for interpreting the results. The annihilation of low-energy e+e- into hadrons is an important source of uncertainty in g-2 measurements.

The ratio of the probability of a new decay to the probability of a decay from Bc+ to J/ψπ+ has been calculated by various theorists over the past 30 years.

Now these predictions can finally be compared with experimental measurements. Most predictions agree with the new result 2.80±0.15±0.11±0.16.

The large number of b quarks produced in LHC collisions and the excellent detectors allow LHCb researchers to study the formation, decay, and other properties of Bc+ mesons in detail.

“Since the discovery of the meson by the Tevatron Collider’s CDF experiment, 18 new Bc+ decays (with more than 5 standard deviations) have been observed, all from the LHCb,” the researchers said.
