Many of us prefer sitting by a window to enhance our mood, but exposure to natural light during the day may also be beneficial for blood sugar control in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Our cells and tissues operate on circadian rhythms, or 24-hour metabolic cycles that influence factors like blood sugar levels. Studies indicate that exposure to artificial light at night can disrupt these rhythms. This raises blood sugar levels, while individuals who spend more time outdoors in sunlight experience enhanced insulin response, a hormone crucial for regulating those levels.

Despite these findings, none of these studies explored the advantages of receiving natural light through windows, especially since most people spend significant time indoors, according to Joris Fuchs from Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

To investigate further, Fuchs and his team enlisted 13 participants with type 2 diabetes, averaging 70 years old, to spend 4.5 days in a room with only natural light from large windows from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Participants continued their usual diabetes medications and largely sat at desks with access to their mobile phones and computers, with their screens dimmed. In the evenings, they were exposed to soft artificial light and could use their devices until 11 p.m., then slept in complete darkness until 7 a.m. They consumed similar meals three times daily to maintain stable weight and followed consistent exercise routines over the 4.5 days.

The researchers conducted a similar experiment with the same group, this time in a windowless room under artificial light. This phase occurred either one month before or after the natural light segment of the study.

Throughout both experiments, participants wore devices to monitor their blood sugar levels continuously; however, due to technical difficulties, data was only obtainable from 10 individuals.

The results indicated that during weeks with more natural light, participants maintained their blood sugar levels within a healthy range 50% of the time, compared to only 43% in the artificial light experiment.

The researchers defined a healthy blood sugar range as 4.4 to 7.2 mmol per liter, aligning with guidelines from the UK National Health Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Although the difference between the two studies may seem minor, extended periods outside of a healthy range can impact an individual’s health significantly, increasing the risk of diabetes-related complications, including heart problems, according to Fuchs.

The positive impact of sunlight may stem from the fact that light-sensitive cells in the eye, crucial for regulating metabolic activity cycles, are particularly responsive to shorter wavelengths present in natural light, Fuchs explained.

Further research is essential to validate these findings; however, Fuchs suggests that many individuals with type 2 diabetes can benefit from increased exposure to natural light, even if it’s simply by sitting near a window. “It’s easy, free, and accessible to all,” Hoeks said. It remains uncertain whether individuals with type 1 diabetes or prediabetes gain similar benefits.

Glenn Jeffrey from University College London emphasizes the necessity for larger studies to substantiate these results. Nonetheless, he noted, “the significance of sunlight is gradually gaining recognition.”

OpenAI Guarantees Enhanced “Granular Control” for Copyright Holders Following Sora 2’s Video Creations of Popular Characters

According to the Wall Street Journal, prior to releasing Sora 2, OpenAI informed talent agencies and studios that they would need to opt out if they wished to prevent the unlicensed use of their material by video generators.

On Saturday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated in a blog post that the company has received “feedback” from users, rights holders, and various groups, leading to modifications.

Reclaiming Control: How to Override Your Brain’s Autopilot Mode

Conscious decisions are only a fraction of your daily actions. The majority of what you do is dictated by habits, as outlined in recent research featured in Psychology and Health.

This research indicates that approximately two-thirds of daily actions occur automatically, triggered by familiar surroundings, timing, or established routines. Essentially, much of our lives are lived on autopilot.

According to Professor Benjamin Gardner, one of the study’s co-authors, “Psychologists describe habits as associations of Cu and Bijavia.” As he noted in BBC Science Focus, “For instance, when I start a task, it automatically prompts me to make tea… Without these habits, we’d be overwhelmed by the need to think through every action we take.”

The research team monitored 105 individuals in the UK and Australia, sending them notifications six times a week to inquire about their activities and whether those actions were intentional or habitual.

Upon analyzing the data, they found that 65% of the actions were habit-driven, 88% were at least partially performed on autopilot, and 76% aligned with the individuals’ conscious goals.

This last statistic is crucial. Rather than diminishing our intentions, many habits actually support their achievement.

Gardner stated, “There’s nothing intrinsically good or bad about a habit itself. If it aids in achieving your goals, it’s a positive habit. If it hinders them, it’s a negative habit.”

The most frequently reported activities included work, educational or volunteer efforts, national or parenting responsibilities, and screen time. Interestingly, exercise was notable as an exception; while many initiated it automatically, conscious effort was still necessary.

The findings point to the potential for using habits to enhance public health and individual well-being. For instance, pairing a new movement with a dependable cue—like exercising after work—can help establish that routine. Breaking old habits, such as substituting chewing gum after meals for smoking, may prove more effective than relying solely on willpower.

When attempting to change a habit, Gardner suggests keeping a record over several days of where you are, the time, and the environment when the habit starts. “Tracking this for a week should help reveal what triggers the habit.”

Ultimately, habits shouldn’t be seen as adversaries to free will. “Habits are incredibly beneficial; they conserve mental energy for other tasks,” Gardner explained. “Despite their negative image, it’s essential to realize that automating many of your desired actions is advantageous.”

Professor Grace Vincent, a sleep scientist at the University of Central Queensland and co-author of the study, agrees: “When you work on cultivating positive habits—whether it’s for sleep hygiene, nutrition, or general health improvement—you can depend on your internal ‘autopilot’ to help establish and maintain these habits.”

Ideker’s team has currently compiled evidence indicating that a protein complex known as Dream acts as a master regulator of DNA repair. This complex operates like a supervisor for the repair team. Each complex, potentially existing in numerous identical copies in every cell, is formed by various proteins, and the acronym DREAM reflects the names of its components.

Initially, DREAM was thought to control cell division, but it is now known to repress hundreds of genes tasked with DNA repair, including BRCA2, a gene that heightens breast cancer risk when mutated.

The research group created a metric for DREAM activity by scrutinizing the over 300 genes they initially manage. “This study aims to demonstrate unmistakably that high DREAM activity correlates with increased aging and reduced longevity, while low DREAM activity is favorable for longevity,” he explains.

Using data from studies involving over 100,000 mouse cells across various tissues, the researchers established that cells exhibiting greater DREAM activity harbor more mutations. Subsequently, they examined data from 92 mammalian species and confirmed a strong correlation between reduced DREAM activity and extended maximum lifespans.

In another facet of their experiment, they scrutinized data from a study involving 90 cells, including 80 individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, discovering a connection between DREAM activity and increased risk.

The team also engineered mice to lack the DREAM complex; this was a challenging task since each constituent protein has a unique role, and the entire complex is crucial for cell division early in development. Mice without it would not survive.

To navigate this challenge, they employed a drug-induced genetic strategy to deactivate the DREAM genes when the mice reached 8 weeks of age. This illustrates why the theory that mutation accumulation is a key factor in aging remains unproven. Advocates like Ideker reference conditions such as Progeria, wherein individuals age prematurely due to compromised DNA repair mechanisms. Others, including de Magalhães, cite a lack of evidence that simply accumulating mutations is a driver of typical aging, although it does correlate with heightened cancer risk.

Even should DREAM complexes prove instrumental in aging, their multifaceted functions complicate the development of treatments. “Achieving a total loss of DREAM functionality, as we have done, may be too drastic,” advises team member ZANE KOCH from UCSD. “Mildly suppressing DREAM could be the optimal approach for extending lifespans.”

Can AI Agents Regain Control of the Internet from Big Tech?

What does the future of the internet hold? As AI companies evolve, previously open web spaces are being overtaken by digital silos controlled by commercial AI models, sidelining enthusiasts and small businesses. In response, a coalition of grassroots researchers is determined to champion an open approach to AI.

Central to this effort is the notion of AI “agents.” These are software programs that navigate the web and interact with online platforms based on human directions, such as planning holidays and making bookings. Many perceive these agents as the next stage of evolution following services like ChatGPT, yet they face significant challenges in functionality. This is largely due to the web’s design, which favors human interaction; thus, developers are recognizing that AI agents require specialized protocols to effectively engage with online content, services, and each other.

“The objective is to establish infrastructure that facilitates communication among bots, much like software does,” explains Catherine Frick from Staffordshire University, UK.

Several competing solutions to this challenge have emerged. For instance, Anthropic, the creators of the Claude chatbot, have introduced the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which standardizes the way AI models connect to various data sources and tools. In April, Google announced its own take with the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol, offering a distinct approach to this concept.

While these methods share similarities, they have important differences. MCP focuses on standardizing AI models’ connections to external data repositories and tools, creating a secure universal channel for two-way communication—akin to having a phone number or email for messaging. In contrast, A2A expands on this by enabling autonomous agents to discover one another, exchange information, and collaborate on tasks.

For instance, you can link your AI chatbot to the code-sharing platform GitHub via MCP, yet Google asserts that A2A could enable agents to manage job interviews, conduct calls, perform background checks—all in one streamlined process, with the agent team operating simultaneously.

However, as these protocols originate from major tech companies, concerns arise that the creators of the most successful protocol might leverage it for their own commercial gain. The MCP model necessitates oversight from a central server for connections, whereas A2A comes with its own costs, assuming that authorized agents will cooperate.

“We want to prevent an ‘Agent Internet’ from evolving into yet another ‘silo alliance,'” warns Gawee Chan, who serves as chairman of the AI Agent Protocol Group. Founded in May as part of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Standards Organization, Chan emphasizes the importance of inclusivity in developing this new layer of the Internet. “If we genuinely believe that AI is a transformative technology for human society, we need an open, neutral community to guide protocol development, ensuring that its future is shared by all companies, not just a select few,” he states.

In pursuit of this goal, Chang has initiated an open-source alternative to the Big Tech Agent Protocol with the Agent Network Protocol (ANP), which predates both MCP and A2A. ANP facilitates AI agents in discovering each other and establishing identities across the web, reminiscent of the early days of the internet, when individuals created personal websites and email accounts independent of large tech intermediaries. This autonomy allows ANP-driven models to function without a central authority, enabling direct communication between distinct AI models on the same device without needing internet verification.

Flick supports the emergence of open-source, non-commercial alternatives for Agent AI. “Essentially, our aim is to restore the fundamental principle of democratization to the Internet, which is how it all began,” she remarks. Without such alternatives, she warns that tech giants could create “walled gardens” reminiscent of the challenges seen in app stores and social media platforms. “If we rely on major corporations for this, they will execute it primarily to maximize profits,” she cautions.

Google claims that its protocols are designed for universal benefit. “We will continue to enhance [A2A] to tackle real-world challenges businesses face in deploying agent frameworks. At its core, it’s structured for the future’s demands,” says Rao Sarapaneni from Google Cloud.

“We have always believed in ensuring that advancements in AI serve everyone,” adds Theo Chu, an anthropologist. “When I developed MCP, I recognized that one key strategy to avoid fragmentation and vendor lock-in—which hampers the advancement of other technologies—was to make it open-source.”

Chu asserts that MCP is integrated across major platforms, including Microsoft, OpenAI, and Google. “The success of MCP will stem from its ability to expand choices rather than restrict them,” she notes. “The collective value of the ecosystem is increased for everyone.”

The W3C Group is eager to collaborate with all stakeholders to establish technical standards industry-wide, but no specific timeline has been set. “Ultimately, our focus isn’t on the triumph or failure of any one protocol but rather on the holistic growth of the agent ecosystem.”

Trump Administration Dissolves CDC’s Infection Control Committee

The Trump administration has dissolved a federal advisory committee responsible for guidance aimed at preventing the spread of infectious diseases in healthcare settings.

BHB, a ketone body, is a key example whose levels rise during low carbohydrate conditions like starvation, intermittent fasting, or ketogenic diet.

In a recent study, Professor Yong Xu of Baylor College of Medicine and team investigated how BHB-Phe, the most common BHB amino acid, affects eating habits and body weight in mice.

“Brain neuron groups regulate feeding behavior, so we mapped the brain to identify regions activated by BHB-Phe,” explained Professor Xu.

“BHB-Phe activated neural populations in the hypothalamus and brainstem, suppressing feeding and leading to weight loss.”

In contrast, mice lacking CNDP2 enzyme, deficient in BHB-Phe, ate more and gained weight.

Interestingly, CNDP2 also produces Lac-Phe, a compound discovered earlier by the research team.

“Lac-Phe from exercise can reduce food intake and obesity in mice,” added Professor Xu.

“But do Lac-Phe and BHB-Phe trigger effects by activating the same brain neurons?”

This discovery points to a possible disruption of the BHB-Phe pathway, present in humans, in obesity and other conditions, warranting further research to understand the mechanism.

“This study unveils new prospects,” commented Dr. Jonathan Long from Stanford.

“In the future, using BHB-Phe to promote weight loss without carbohydrate restrictions may be feasible.”

Using light to control robotic jellyfish made from magnetic fluid

A jellyfish-shaped robot made from magnetic fluid can be controlled with light through an underwater obstacle course, and swarms of these soft robots could be useful for delivering chemicals throughout liquid mixtures or moving fluids through a lab-on-a-chip.

Ferrofluid droplets are made of magnetic nanoparticles suspended in oil, and can move across a flat surface and change shape when guided in different directions by a magnet. When these droplets are immersed in water and exposed to light, Sun Meng Meng, a researcher from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Germany, and his colleagues have succeeded in creating an object that defies gravity.

When ferrofluid absorbs light (and it’s particularly good at that, because it’s black), it heats up, causing tiny bubbles inside it to expand. This makes the droplets below the surface lighter and more buoyant, allowing them to float upwards, Sun says.

He and his colleagues built a soft robot with droplets of magnetic fluid encased in a jellyfish-shaped hydrogel shell, and then tested it. The researchers devised an obstacle course at the bottom of a tank of water that included a variety of platforms of different heights. They guided the robot through the course and had it navigate over the platforms.

In one experiment, they lined up three robotic jellyfish on the bottom of a tank and heated them with a laser, causing them to move upward one after the other. Sunlight focused by a magnifying glass had a similar effect, causing the jellyfish to float vertically.

Hamid Marvi, the Arizona State University researcher, says controlling an entire swarm of droplets simultaneously could one day be useful for delivering medicines or performing other functions in the human body. By encasing them in hydrogel, he says, light could be used to guide the ferrofluid droplets and move the hydrogel itself, enabling complex movements.

But Mulvey says many details need to be worked out before the ferrofluid can be used for medical purposes, such as whether it’s safe to ingest it.
