Sword Dragon: The Ichthyosaur with Enormous Eyes and a Lethal Snout

Presenting the “sword dragon,” a recently identified species of ichthyosaur, a predatory ancient reptile that ruled the oceans during the reign of the dinosaurs on land.

This exquisitely preserved fossil skeleton was unearthed in 2001 near Golden Cap on England’s Jurassic Coast and remained in museum storage for many years. Royal Ontario Museum in Canada.

Dean Lomax of the University of Manchester, UK, stated: “They recognized it was something notable.” “They intended to study it, but ultimately did not.”

Lomax and his team have carefully examined and classified a specimen with large eye sockets and a sword-like elongated snout. The fossil contains “needle-like teeth,” adapted for consuming soft-bodied prey such as squid and fish. “This provides great insight into the lifestyle of this creature while it was alive. Essentially, it likely hunted in dim environments and depended on exceptional vision,” Lomax explained.

The creature measured approximately 3 meters in length, roughly the size of a bottlenose dolphin, and is believed to have existed during the Early Jurassic period, specifically the Pliensbachian epoch, around 193 to 184 million years ago.

Its anatomical features are unprecedented among ichthyosaurs, including a distinctive lacrimal bone with an unusual structure surrounding its nostrils. “The preservation quality, especially of delicate elements like cranial sutures and the lacrimal and prefrontal processes, is remarkable,” remarked Aubrey Roberts from the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo, Norway.

The black mass found between the ribs may represent its final meal, although the researchers were unable to identify it.

This ichthyosaur has been named for its menacing snout: Siphodracon Golden Capensis, known as the golden-capped sword dragon.

This specimen also provides valuable insight into the evolution of ichthyosaurs. “The greatest significance of this discovery lies in its age,” remarked Roberts. During the latter part of the Triassic, massive superpredator ichthyosaurs such as Ichthyotitan, reaching lengths of nearly 25 meters, existed alongside species as large as blue whales, but these titans vanished following a mass extinction event at the end of the Triassic, approximately 201.4 million years ago, marking the onset of the Jurassic period.

Fossils of various smaller ichthyosaurs have been discovered that date back to the Jurassic period, as Lomax pointed out. Many have been identified since the Pliensbachian period, but no common species exist, and there are two distinct types.

“Triassic ichthyosaurs were well-known for their uniqueness,” explains Neil Kelley of Vanderbilt University, Tennessee. “Their Jurassic successors are often perceived as somewhat more uniform, sharing a superficially dolphin-like appearance.”

Siphodracon contributes another shade to the broad spectrum of ichthyosaurs,” he added, supporting evidence that Jurassic ichthyosaurs adopted a range of lifestyles, featuring diverse diets, swimming speeds, and habitat preferences.

Unique Fossil of a Boy’s Chest Dragon Unearthed in Germany

Rhynchocephalians – These are members of the sister group to squamates (which include lizards, snakes, and worm lizards) and encompass living Tuataras (Sphenodon punctatus), dating back to the late Jurassic period in the Solnhofen Archipelago. They have been recognized for nearly two centuries, with an increasing number of specimens and species, yet their evolutionary development remains poorly understood. A well-documented marine rhynchocephalian genus, Plerosaurus, existed during the late Jurassic period about 150 million years ago, but clear juvenile specimens have yet to be identified among more than 15 known specimens (with several unlisted).

“Genuine Plerosaurus is the most common rhynchocephalian found in the Late Jurassic deposits of Canjuers and Cerin, France, as well as in the Solnhofen Archipelago, Germany,” stated Dr. Victor Beccari from the SNSB-Bayerische Staatsammlung für Paläontologie and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, along with his colleagues.

“This genus is characterized by an elongated triangular skull, a reshaped anterior jaw, an absence of a low anterior flange in the front part of the teeth, and reduced forelimbs.”

“Currently, there are two species within this genus: Pleurosaurus goldfussi and Pleurosaurus ginsburgi.”

“The specific distinctions are based on the count of anterior sacral vertebrae (50 and 57, respectively), the ratio of skull to appendix, and more advanced pelvic development in Pleurosaurus goldfussi.”

“Extensive research has been undertaken; however, in the more than 15 published specimens of Plerosaurus, no clear juvenile specimens have been recorded as of yet.”

In a recent study, researchers described a juvenile specimen of Plerosaurus.

The fossils were sourced from the Mörnsheim Formation near Müllheim, close to Solnhofen, Bavaria, Germany.

“This fossil is especially intriguing as it distinctly exhibits characteristics typical of young animals,” commented the paleontologist.

“Its teeth are small, show no signs of wear, its bones remain underdeveloped, and the vertebrae are still forming.”

“This small size, along with other features, makes it the first clearly identified juvenile Plerosaurus. These specimens bridge crucial gaps in understanding the growth and development of these extinct reptiles.”

Findings of juvenile Plerosaurus have significant implications for classifying another genus, Acrosaurus.

“Historically, some paleontologists have posited that Acrosaurus might represent a juvenile form of Plerosaurus, but until now, there was no substantial evidence to support this theory,” the researchers noted.

“These new fossils exhibit numerous similarities to previously identified Acrosaurus, suggesting that it is not a separate genus, but rather a hatchling form of Plerosaurus.”

“For years, I have sought to comprehend how these animals grew and developed, but I had never encountered such a young, well-preserved specimen,” remarked Dr. Andrea Villa from the Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont Institute.

The team’s paper was published in the March 2025 issue of Anatomical Records.

This Unusual Underwater “Blue Dragon” Battles Stolen Jellyfish Venom

Far from the shore, in the immense stretches of the open ocean, resides an uncommon assembly of creatures known as “Neustons.”

This environment is a vast, two-dimensional layer of the ocean that bridges the atmosphere with the sea.

Among this group, one of the most fascinating beings is the blue dragon, a kind of sea slug, or naujibrance, more widely recognized as the blue dragon, the sea swallow, or Glaucus atlanticus.

Blue dragons float on the surface, buoyed by the air bubbles they have ingested. To evade predators, they employ a unique biological strategy called countershading.

The underside of their body, positioned upside down, exhibits a bright blue hue that camouflages it against the ocean below, concealing it from aerial hunters above.

Conversely, the side that hangs from the surface boasts silver stripes that mimic the shimmering ocean surface, aiding swimming predators in their upward gaze.

Overall, the blue dragon appears peculiar owing to its sea slug nature. The main body, measuring about 3cm (0.4 inches), seems somewhat sluggish, but it features elongated appendages resembling fingers of varying lengths.

These appendages are not used for waving or swimming; they are anatomical structures called ceratha, essentially serving as a secondary gill by extending the intestines and respiratory system to facilitate breathing.

Like many sea slug species, the Blue Dragon utilizes its ceratha as a weapon. They are notorious hunters, primarily targeting other blue-hued Neustons, including Portuguese man o’ war (Physalia physalis) and jellyfish-like creatures like blue buttons (Porpita porpita) and by-the-wind sailors (Velella velella).

Blue dragons can inject venom into these organisms without fear of being stung.

Remarkably, these sea slugs can recycle their prey’s toxins, maintaining them intact and incorporating them into their ceratha.

When threatened by predators, they can launch these toxins as a potent defense mechanism.

Modern challenges pose threats to Blue Dragons and their fellow Neuston inhabitants. A study conducted between Hawaii and California reveals that they inhabit the same remote regions of the infamous Pacific Ocean, including the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, where floating plastic debris accumulates due to swirling ocean currents.

One approach to combat this plastic pollution involves placing a net between two vessels to retrieve debris from the surface. However, this method could inadvertently capture a significant number of Neustons.

The complete ecological consequences of this method remain unclear, but it may have significant repercussions on the marine food web. These creatures serve as crucial food sources for a variety of marine species, such as sea turtles and seabirds.

Trying out Lush’s Minecraft range: Can you smell like the Ender Dragon? | Games

and othersLast spring, one of my favorite brand tie-ins of 2023 came when cosmetics giant Lush teamed up with Nintendo to create a range of products based on Super Mario. It was a riot of brightly coloured shower gels and super sweet fragrances, including an amazing Princess Peach body spray that I still wear because I don’t give a damn about gender-based perfume norms.

Rush has released a new video game series. Celebrating Minecraft’s 15th AnniversaryThere are 12 items in the collection, including a TNT block, the most literal bath bomb Lush has ever made, as well as grass and lava blocks, a creeper head shower bomb, and a diamond pickaxe bubble bar, which is pretty heavy despite its small size.

The collection is the result of a year-long collaboration with game developer Mojang, and has been a popular project among the company’s employees. Melody Morton, creative director at Lush Concepts, is a frequent player, but she’s not the only one. “We have a lot of Minecraft players within the company, so we had a lot of input and resources to draw from in terms of product, creative, and messaging,” says Kareem Brinkworth, creative lead on the Lush collaboration team.

How much you want to try these will depend on your love of the game, and Lush’s famously rather strong scents. “Choosing the scent for a product is often the last part of putting everything together, so we all have fun with this part,” says Brinkworth. “Some items had a clear and obvious scent direction. For example, the Glass Block Bath Bomb needed to smell clean, fresh and green – just like grass. We developed a freshly cut grass scent a while back, so this combination was in the cards from the start.”

Brinkworth says some of the other items required trial and error with multiple scents. “We look at the color of the bath bomb and the properties of the item to determine the overall feeling we want to evoke, and that often leads to the perfectly matched scent.” The TNT bath bomb is an explosion of ylang-ylang and jasmine that paints your bath a vibrant red, like you’re immersed in a hippie horror movie. In contrast, Creeper Block has a delicate lemongrass scent that belies the creature’s sinister role in the game. Totem of Undying is a soap made with Brazilian orange and bergamot oils that some people might find off-putting, but as someone who likes to smell like fruit salad chews, I love it.

Lush is not the only company to combine cosmetics and gaming. A few years ago, ColourPop Cosmetics had a great selection of Animal Crossing: New Horizons products. While applying make-up Fairy Tail Co., Ltd. is established A perfume inspired by the fighting game “Guilty Gear.” If you want a truly unique perfume, Capcom released several Colognes. Texas is the home of a newly discovered wind dragon species

A new genus and species of a large wind dragon that lived about 218 million years ago has been described from a large portion of its carapace discovered in Texas, USA.

Aitosaurus is an extinct quadrupedal heavily armored reptile aetosaurs.

Their name means “eagle lizard” and comes from the fact that their skull resembles that of a bird.

These creatures could reach lengths of up to 6 m (20 ft) and were geographically widespread during the Late Triassic.

“Aetosaurs are a group of quadrupedal armored reptiles whose terrestrial ecology is inferred to include both herbivory and omnivory,” said a paleontologist at the University of Texas at Austin. William Reyes and his colleagues.

“They have achieved a nearly global geographic distribution, but are stratigraphically restricted to the Late Triassic.”

“Most species of wind dragons reach a total length of 2 to 6 meters (6.6 to 20 feet).”

After a series of delays due to bad weather, NASA and SpaceX are currently targeting until 5:05 p.m. EST Wednesday, Dec. 20, for the company’s 29th Dragon Commercial Supply Service Mission undocking from the International Space Station (ISS). The integrated team continues to assess weather conditions as the cold front passes through the splashdown zone off the coast of Florida to determine optimal opportunities for autonomous shore departure. The SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft, developed by SpaceX, represents a major advancement in commercial spaceflight. The spacecraft is designed to transport cargo to the International Space Station (ISS) and return cargo to Earth. The Dragon spaceship has two versions: Cargo Dragon and Crew Dragon (Dragon 2).
