“Every so often, a groundbreaking product emerges that reshapes our reality.” Steve Jobs during the 2007 Apple presentation. Tech executives often hype their innovations, but this proclamation was substantiated. The iPhone not only popularized apps but also introduced compact, powerful computers into our daily lives.
However, this transformation comes with drawbacks. Much like a snail retreating into its shell, we can retreat into our devices at any moment, breeding social anxiety. Coupled with safety issues, numerous countries have restricted mobile phone use in educational settings, and Australia has implemented a total ban on social media for users under 16 as of December 2025. Additionally, reliance on a constantly connected device can diminish our sense of privacy, according to data scientists like Mar Hicks of the University of Virginia. “This technology is acclimating users to significantly less privacy, not only in public spaces but also within the privacy of their own homes.”
Smartphones transcend their basic function, emphasizing their role in our lives, as anthropologist Daniel Miller from University College London notes. “They’ve expanded our personal space,” he articulates. These handheld digital environments allow for seamless access to the virtual worlds of our friends and family, resulting in a continuous navigation between our physical and digital existence.
The global influence of smartphones is undeniable. According to GSMA, the mobile operators’ industry association, over 70% of the global population now owns a smartphone. In many low-income countries, people increasingly bypass traditional desktop computers altogether. Smartphone-driven fintech platforms facilitate transactions for 70 million users across 170 countries, removing the necessity for conventional banks. Furthermore, farmers utilize smartphone applications for crop monitoring, and doctors employ them in hospitals to reduce reliance on costly machinery.
Moreover, the ramifications of smartphones extend far beyond their immediate use. The rapid miniaturization of electrical components like cameras, transistors, and motion sensors has enhanced processing power and introduced new potentials. This technological evolution has spurred numerous 21st-century innovations, including versatile drones, smart wearables, virtual reality headsets, and miniature medical implants.
Global emissions from fossil fuels are projected to rise by 1.1% in 2025, hitting a record high as hydrocarbon consumption accelerates, as per the annual Global Carbon Budget report.
On a more optimistic note, emissions from China, the leading emitter globally, seem to be stabilizing and may have peaked, offering hope that worldwide emissions may soon follow the same trend.
“We are not yet in a situation where emissions are decreasing at the pace required to combat climate change,” states Corinne Le Quéré, a researcher at the University of East Anglia. “However, it is encouraging to see emissions growth in China and India beginning to slow.”
The report estimates that humanity will emit 38.1 billion tonnes of fossil CO2 this year, comparable to the emissions from driving 9 billion gasoline cars annually. While renewable energy sources are replacing hydrocarbons in several regions, they remain insufficient to meet the rising energy demands, most of which continue to be fulfilled by fossil fuels. The consumption of coal, oil, and natural gas is still on the rise this year.
As noted in the report, the Earth is now 1.36 degrees Celsius warmer than before the industrial era. The current emissions trajectory makes it nearly impossible to keep global warming below the 1.5°C threshold set by the Paris Agreement, according to the report’s authors. Exceeding this limit substantially increases the risks of severe climate impacts, including irreversible changes like ice sheet collapses.
Last month, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged world leaders at the COP30 climate summit that surpassing 1.5°C of warming seems likely, urging humanity to reduce emissions and minimize this overshoot.
While global CO2 emissions are expected to decline slightly in 2025 when factoring in carbon absorption by oceans and land ecosystems, this is primarily attributed to the conclusion of the warm El Niño event, which hindered photosynthesis in major carbon sinks like tropical forests.
As the climate continues to warm, these sinks are becoming less effective at absorbing CO2, as highlighted in a separate study conducted by the team behind the Global Carbon Budget Report.
Nonetheless, the overall rise in emissions over the past decade has been slower compared to the previous decade, notes Pierre Friedlingstein from the University of Exeter, one of the report’s authors. “There are positive trends,” he asserts. “When looking at the growth rate, it’s significantly lower now.”
The report projects a 0.4% increase in emissions from China in 2025. An analysis by Carbon Brief illustrates that emissions have remained flat through the third quarter of this year. Solar power generation in the country has surged by 46% year-on-year, which has helped to mitigate the increased electricity demand. Meanwhile, rising electric vehicle sales have contributed to reduced pollution in the transport sector, although a spike in the production of oil-heavy chemicals and plastics has led to an uptick in static electricity emissions overall.
The think tank “Ember” mentions in another report that, thanks to the solar power boom, China’s fossil fuel electricity generation declined by 1.1% in the first three quarters of 2025, indicating “structural changes within the country’s electricity system.” India is also experiencing a significant increase in solar and wind energy installations, which fell by 3.3% during this period.
Enver stated that for the first time since the onset of COVID-19, global fossil electricity generation, excluding transportation, industry, and other sectors, will see no increase in 2025.
In 2011, Joey Lanev de Francesco spent nearly four years working in room service at a luxury hotel in Providence, Rhode Island, earning a mere $5.50 (£4) per hour. He endured long shifts that took a toll on him and reduced his hard-earned tips.
The inadequate treatment escalated when De Francesco and his coworkers attempted to unionize. The manager responded harshly, punishing employees for minor infractions. In fact, shift workers who needed to call guests were prohibited from sitting down.
De Francesco ultimately decided to resign. On his final day, he secretly entered the hotel staff quarters with a herd of seven powerful marching bands, surprising his boss with a musical farewell. “I’m here to tell you I’m not going,” he proclaimed, exiting while his band played triumphant tunes and chanted “Joey Quits.”
At 22 years old, De Francesco quickly enlisted friends to record the event. After sitting on the video for a few days, he uploaded it to YouTube, where it rapidly gained traction. Fast forward 13 years, and the video has garnered nearly 10 million views.

“We didn’t think it would gain much attention,” De Francesco, now 36 and living in New York, stated. The musician expressed feeling “liberated” after resigning and turning the tables on his manager. “Now, I’m ashamed of you for treating everyone so poorly,” he remarked.
Did his viral exit hinder his job prospects? Not at all. Shortly thereafter, De Francesco found work at a museum, noting that the incident “will never come up” in job interviews—perhaps even something worth adding to his resume.
De Francesco’s story remains iconic in the Hall of Fame of Resignation, but it faces stiff competition from a new wave of employees. More workers are staging revenge resignations, demonstrating their discontent with their workplaces. Even clergy members are partaking in this trend: In July, Father Pat Brennan delivered a “farewell gift” to his congregation in the form of a poem that doubled as his resignation letter, aiming to be an “uncomplaining, undesirable” parishioner who spread “gossip” using “holy lips.”

Employer review site Glassdoor warned at the end of last year about a “wave of revenge” shaping the future of employee satisfaction by 2025. A survey of 2,008 workers in the UK released in July revealed that 15% have left their jobs out of revenge. Social media has accelerated this trend, with many sharing their stories online. Brianna’s resignation video concluded with a rallying cry: “These companies will fire you in a day and leave nothing behind.
The 26-year-old American, living in Kyoto, Japan, was just two hours away from teaching his next English class when he quit. Initially, things were manageable, but it quickly changed. “If I finished a lesson a minute early or late, she’d become upset,” Slaughter recounted.
As Slaughter began to work, he found lots of free time, but his coworkers were mostly “cold,” and soon, problems began to arise. They earned 2,000 yen (£10) per class instead of hourly wages, forcing them to endure unpaid hours between classes for minimal compensation. Schedules were often given out just a day before, making planning nearly impossible. Due to the sedentary nature of the job, Slaughter developed health issues: “I went to the doctor, and they said, you’re sitting all the time, so you’re getting inflammation in your neck,” he noted.
Slaughter’s breaking point occurred with the arrival of a new manager, who insisted he wear long sleeves to cover his “aggressive tattoos” and often sat in on classes. It escalated to the point where Slaughter was crying every night. After receiving an unimpressive 100,000 yen (£500) for a month of “Hardcore Classroom Lessons” last May, he had had enough.

Slaughter sent his resignation letter into the digital ether before quickly recalling that a two-month notice was required. In a TikTok video that has amassed 1.2 million views, Slaughter addressed his manager:
Far from hindering their careers, these stories have gone viral, unlocking new opportunities. “I made $7,000 on TikTok in the month I left,” Slaughter remarked. Many reached out, expressing that his video inspired them to leave their toxic workplaces: “They said: I think I’ll quit my job too. This was my sign.” For those undecided, Slaughter advised:
Younger generations are more likely to execute revenge resignations. A report revealed that 26% of individuals aged 18-34 and 22% of those aged 35-44 in the UK have done so, compared to just 8% of people aged 45-54. In June, a survey by the Business Research Group found a 15% difference in this regard between younger and older workers in the United States.
Four years ago, 25-year-old Carly, residing in Alabama, was jobless. After contacting a temp agency, she was immediately offered a receptionist position based solely on her resume, with instructions to start the next day. “It might not have been the ideal job, but I was desperate, so I accepted,” she reflected.
The initial three months were “wonderful,” leading to a promotion as the HR pay manager, but things soon took a downturn. A new colleague aligned with the boss began to spread false rumors that Carly was an alcoholic due to her use of a lamp instead of overhead lights in her office. “I liked the ambiance,” she noted.
Carly was soon assigned additional duties as an accounts payable manager. “It was too much for a 21-year-old to handle alone,” she explained. The company briefly hired a man who was paid $10 more per hour than her to assist, but he was fired after mishandling payroll. Carly was forced to juggle both roles once more.
“I was perpetually stressed, distressed, and crying,” she admitted. The situation reached a boiling point during a management meeting when a colleague expected her to “flap frustration” in front of everyone. “It was an absurd request,” she remarked. “He essentially aimed to bully me publicly,” but Carly had different plans.
On the day of the meeting, Carly awoke early, went to the office, and scheduled an email to all managers conveying, “Let them know how messed up their business is,” she stated. It began cautiously: “I decided it was time to pursue a different path,” but quickly escalated. She bluntly labeled one manager as “literally a rock” and mentioned that her heavy workload caused “daily stress that often culminated in anxiety attacks and tearful nights.” She concluded with, “My laptop and keys are on my desk.”
After hitting send, her boss attempted to call; Carly didn’t answer. “I never heard from them again,” she recounted. Upon leaving the office for the last time, she felt euphoric: “I could have stripped my clothes off and raced home naked. All my anxiety and stress melted away,” she claimed.
She quickly secured another job, although she had some reservations about future interviews. “If they ask, I’ll be honest. If you treat me well, I won’t do this to you,” Carly assured.
While most are no longer engaging in dramatic revenge resignations, some new workers may be motivated to share their own experiences. Katie Ostler left her job after two years at a supermarket in Melbourne, Australia, where she began working at 16. “It was a very toxic, high-pressure environment with significant sales,” she explained.
Now 29 and living in Manchester, UK, Ostler wasn’t concerned about her boss knowing her name for the first six months. “It wasn’t ideal, but I kept my head down and did what was required,” she expressed.
As she approached 18, new job opportunities, particularly in bars, opened up. When the toxic supermarket experience pushed her to the edge, she had already submitted her resume to a local pub. One day, a customer angrily yelled at one of Ostler’s 15-year-old colleagues over a refund. Rather than support the young employee, the manager sided with the customer and also shouted. “I decided it was time to leave,” she remarked.
Not long after, she received a bar job offer and went to the supermarket to submit her resignation during the mandatory week’s notice. Attempting to give her letter to the supervisor, she was directed to hand it directly to the manager, who was supposedly in an interview. After following the supervisor’s instructions on location, Ostler seized the opportunity. She delivered the letter and announced her departure. The room fell silent, and the interviewees stared at her in confusion. “It took a lot of courage. I left before my manager could respond,” she said.
That wasn’t the last she would hear from him. She received a call on her way to begin her new job, instructing her not to finish her final week because she “didn’t want my toxic energy” around the team. “I remember thinking, did you look in the mirror?” she recalled. She had to return to the supermarket several times for groceries. “I avoided it when possible, but people recognized me and said hello. Unfortunately, no one cheered for me when I entered,” she said. Nonetheless, the resignation felt empowering: “I felt like a boss. It was a very powerful moment.”
this summer, technology secretary Peter Kyle revealed that he is contemplating a two-hour “screen time” limit for children’s use of social media apps. This approach is not just insufficient; it has become outdated.
While the timing of this announcement is appropriate, coinciding with the onset of summer holidays and the imperative for parents to oversee their children’s safety in digital spaces, it is rooted in older screen time recommendations. While it’s vital to think about limiting screen time, the suggested cap only addresses usage duration without considering quality. Thankfully, as someone who teaches digital literacy and is also a parent, I recognize there are ways to cultivate healthier habits for our children this summer, even if the government hasn’t fully adapted yet.
Screen time limits have dominated the discourse on digital engagement for parents, educators, and society over the past decade. This guidance emerged after research indicated that increased screen time correlates with a higher risk of obesity among children and adolescents. While this was beneficial advice for promoting physical health, it failed to robustly address how the nature and quality of online content impact mental health.
For instance, adhering to this guidance allows one child to enjoy CBeebies alongside their family, stimulating conversation, while another child is isolated with headphones, consuming algorithm-driven YouTube Shorts. The existing “Screen Time” guidance treats both scenarios equivalently. However, they are qualitatively distinct. In the first case, one child experiences interactive and communal viewing with a parent, fostering discussion and connection, while the other child’s viewing experience remains isolated and fragmented. They consume short-form content with limited narratives and character development, often lacking regulatory oversight.
YouTube has become a primary platform for our children’s screen time and is now the leading choice for Generation Alpha’s first television experience. Remarkably, 88% of UK children aged 3 to 17 are using the platform. Yet, YouTube is often overlooked in discussions about social media restrictions, including in Kyle’s statement.
Attempts have been made to differentiate between types of screen time, such as “passive” versus “active” engagement. The Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health aims for policies that emphasize habits and behavior, categorizing “active screen time” as involving cognitive or physical engagement—like gaming or homework activities—while passive screen time entails low levels of interaction and intellectual involvement.Similarly, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry recommends engaging with children about what they watch, fostering opportunities for social, educational, and creative screen time. Unfortunately, these insights have not been fully embraced in public or political dialogues.
While encouraging intentional choices regarding children’s screen content, I do not imply that individual responsibility is the sole solution. We are experiencing a digital public health crisis, as highlighted by General Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, who noted that social media can heighten the risks of anxiety and depression in youth. There is an urgent need for comprehensive policies that tackle the technological and economic frameworks underpinning these platforms. This is where Kyle should focus his efforts.
Meanwhile, the proposals from Kyle should not rely on outdated public guidance. They must be rooted in a nuanced understanding of varied screen use, addressing both physical and mental health concerns while tackling systemic issues in digital platform design. Crucially, they must consider not just the quantity, but also the quality of children’s digital engagement.
Until such changes are made, the onus of responsibility falls on individuals—particularly parents—to ensure their children are learning, engaging, proactive, and safe during screen time. I know this may feel overwhelming. To help, here are some strategies to implement with my kids this summer.
For younger children, limited screen time is generally preferable. If screens are used, I recommend watching live TV on platforms like CBeebies or CBBC, emphasizing quality engagement.
Prioritize content that encourages active participation over passive consumption. Content that fosters creativity and dialogue supports cognitive engagement and enhances communication skills, often leading to meaningful discussions.
Begin instilling critical thinking about digital content early. Use tools like SightEngine to analyze images, helping to distinguish between real and potentially misleading content. This sparks conversation about online misinformation.
Engage older children in discussions about a healthy digital diet. Together, commit to actively seeking out positive content for 30 minutes each week, deliberately avoiding uninteresting or negatively skewed material. Teach them that even negative engagement, such as liking or commenting on unfavorable content, contributes to its visibility.
As a family, regularly declutter your digital spaces by removing content that no longer inspires or educates. This includes unfollowing unwanted accounts, personalities, and brands to refine your feed to what truly resonates with you.
Consider exploring alternative search engines as a family to minimize targeted ads. DuckDuckGo and Firefox Focus do not track users for advertising purposes, and Startpage allows users to utilize Google while maintaining privacy.
While the government may not effectively regulate digital technology, parents still hold the power to guide intentional screen use. By doing so, we can instill concepts of healthy and critical screen engagement from a young age.

A solar-powered surveillance drone boasting a wingspan larger than that of the Boeing 747 is capable of flying continuously for weeks or even months, as claimed by its operators. A test flight is currently underway off the US Gulf Coast this month.
Run by the US-Spanish venture Skydweller Aero, the Skydweller drone features a 72-meter wingspan, surpassing the width of most commercial jets. Weighing approximately 2,500 kilograms—similar to a Ford F-150 truck—this drone aims to achieve the first solar-powered flight globally, which was targeted for 2016, with a mission to carry out “pure targeted flights” over 13 kilometers during daylight, while aspiring towards building a “comparable solar-powered carbon fiber drone.”
The Skydweller drone executed the world’s inaugural autonomous solar-powered flight in April 2024, with several subsequent test flights conducted throughout the year. Military funding evaluations are focusing on the viability of marine drone patrols. Military funding is assessing the feasibility of marine drone patrols.
Most recently, the solar-powered drone accomplished its longest flight after departing from Stennis International Airport in Mississippi on July 20. According to the Flightradar24 Flight Tracking Service, it remained aloft over the Gulf Coast for more than three days, landing on July 23. The service also indicated that, on July 14, the drone had flown for over 18 hours.
The wingspan of the Skydweller drone is nearly double that of major surveillance drones, such as the Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk used by the US Air Force. Its payload capacity of 400 kilograms significantly surpasses the lifting capabilities of most solar drones. Recently, the French aerospace company Thales contributed to the development of the Skydweller drone by equipping it with air surveillance radar. Equipment was provided for enhancing its capabilities.
However, experts suggest that the decades-long pursuit of commercializing solar drones has largely been marked by unmet promises and monumental failures. Arthur Holland Michele, a research partner at the Oslo Peace Institute, points out that both Google and Facebook attempted to create solar-powered drones for internet services but eventually discontinuing their initiatives. Aerospace manufacturer Airbus, too, has heavily invested in smaller Zephyr solar-electric drones, yet “we haven’t observed significant returns thus far,” states Michele.
“The military has funded solar drone demonstration flights for over ten years, and no one has yet acquired the technology,” Michele explains. “While solar drones are impressive and theoretically meaningful, their practical sustainability as a business case remains unclear.”
Egg cells do not dispose of waste like other cells.

Human eggs appear to manage waste differently than other cell types.
All women are born with a limited supply of egg cells, or oocytes, expected to last around 50 years. This duration is remarkably extended for a single cell. Certain human cells, including brain and retinal cells, can persist for a lifetime, but the innate processes that facilitate their function often lead to gradual damage over time.
Cells require protein recycling as part of their housekeeping, but this comes with a price. The energy spent during this process can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which inflict random damage on the cells. “This background damage is ever-present,” notes Elvan Beke from the Spanish Genome Regulation Center. “An increase in ROS correlates with increased damage.”
However, it appears that healthy eggs circumvent this issue. To investigate this phenomenon, Beke and her team examined human eggs under a microscope. The cells were immersed in a fluid containing a fluorescent dye that binds to acidic cellular components known as lysosomes, which are considered “recycling plants.” Gabriele Zaffagnini from the University of Cologne, Germany, was involved in this study.
The bright dyes indicated that the lysosomes containing waste in human eggs demonstrated less activity compared to similar structures in other human cells or small mammalian egg cells, such as those from mice. Zaffagnini and his colleagues theorize that this may serve a self-preservation purpose.
According to Zaffagnini, reducing the waste recycling process might be one of several strategies employed by human egg cells to maintain their extended lifespan. Beke suggests that human oocytes appear to “put the brakes on everything” in order to minimize damage, as all cellular functions slow down in these eggs, thereby lowering the production of harmful ROS.
Slowing the protein recycling mechanism seems beneficial for egg cell health, and failure to do so could explain the prevalence of unhealthy oocytes. “This insight might help explain why human oocytes become dysfunctional after a certain age,” states M-Re from Yale University School of Medicine. “This could lead to a broader understanding of the challenges faced by human oocytes,” he adds.

Evaluating egg cell health in this manner could enhance fertility therapies. “It’s well-known that protein degradation is vital for cell survival, directly affecting fertility,” explains Beke, who is focused on researching healthy egg cells. There are ongoing comparisons between oocytes and cells from individuals encountering fertility issues. “Elevated ROS levels correlate with poor IVF outcomes,” she states.
Research on human egg cells is still in its early stages due to inherent complexities. “They are hard to manipulate due to sample constraints,” comments Beke. Seri mentions that this is one of several “layers” complicating egg cell studies, including regulatory limitations and funding challenges.
Zaffagnini believes that overcoming these obstacles could lead to “truly astonishing” discoveries. “It’s certainly worth pursuing,” he concludes.
AI chatbots from tech giants like OpenAI and Google have seen several inference upgrades in recent months. Ideally, these upgrades would lead to more reliable answers, but recent tests indicate that performance may be worse than that of previous models. Errors called “hallucinations,” particularly in the “hagatsuki” category, have been persistent issues that developers have struggled to eliminate.
Hallucination is the broad term used to describe specific errors generated by large-scale language models (LLMs) from organizations like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. It primarily refers to instances where these models present false information as fact, but it can also describe instances where a generated answer is accurate yet irrelevant to the question posed.
A technical report from OpenAI evaluating the latest LLMs revealed that the O3 and O4-MINI models, released in April, exhibit significantly higher hallucination rates compared to earlier O1 models introduced in late 2024. For instance, if O4-MINI had a summary accuracy of 33%, the hallucination rate for O3 was similarly at 33%, whereas the O1 model maintained a rate of only 16%.
This issue is not exclusive to OpenAI. The popular leaderboard showcases various inference models from different companies assessing their hallucination rates, including the DeepSeek-R1 model. This model has shown increased hallucination rates compared to previous versions, undergoing several reasoning steps before reaching a conclusion.
An OpenAI spokesperson stated, “We are actively working to reduce hallucination rates in O3 and O4-MINI. Hallucinations are inherently more common in inference models. We will continue our research across all models to enhance accuracy and reliability.”
Some potential applications of LLMs can be significantly impeded by hallucinations. Models that frequently produce misinformation are unsuitable as research assistants, and a bot stating fictitious legal cases could endanger lawyers. Customer service agents falsely citing obsolete policies can also create significant challenges for businesses.
Initially, AI companies believed they would resolve these issues over time. Historically, models had shown reduced hallucinations with each update, yet the recent spikes in hallucination rates complicate this narrative.
Vectara’s leaderboard ranks models based on their consistency in summarizing documents. This indicates that for systems from OpenAI and Google, “hallucination rates are roughly comparable for inference and irrational models,” as noted by Forest Shen Bao from Vectara. Google has not provided further comments. For leaderboard assessments, the specific rates of hallucinations are less significant than each model’s overall ranking, according to Bao.
However, these rankings may not effectively compare AI models. For one, different types of hallucinations are often conflated. The Vectara team pointed out that the DeepSeek-R1 model demonstrated a 14.3% hallucination rate, but many of these hallucinations were “benign,” being logically deduced yet not appearing in the original text.
Another issue with these rankings is that tests based on text summaries “reveal nothing about the percentage of incorrect output” for tasks where LLMs are applied, as stated by Emily Bender at Washington University. She suggests that leaderboard results don’t provide a comprehensive evaluation of this technology, particularly since LLMs are not solely designed for text summarization.
These models generate answers by repeatedly answering the question, “What is the next word?” to formulate responses, thus not processing information in a traditional sense. However, many technology companies continue to use the term “hallucination” to describe output errors.
“The term ‘hallucination’ is doubly problematic,” says Bender. “On one hand, it implies that false output is abnormal and could potentially be mitigated, while on the other hand, it inaccurately anthropomorphizes the machine since large language models lack awareness.”
Arvind Narayanan from Princeton University argues that the issue extends beyond hallucinations. Models can also produce errors by utilizing unreliable sources or outdated information. Merely increasing training data and computational power may not rectify the problems.

During his doctoral studies at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, Carolyn NeederHe was currently studying shark hearing at Woods Hole Marine Facility in Massachusetts. According to officials, the new Dragon capsule scheduled for launch in late March should arrive at NASA’s processing facility in Florida in early January. NASA officials say they are working closely with Boeing, but the company’s absence from the event and limited public statements have raised questions about its commitment to transparency and the future of the Starliner program.

Ahead of a post-landing news conference held last week at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, NASA’s public advisory included the names of two Boeing executives who will be participating.

Starliner launched astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to the International Space Station in early June. The capsule’s first manned test flight was scheduled to last about eight days. However, a helium leak from the spacecraft’s propulsion system and a thruster failure while docking with the space station kept Starliner and its crew in space for months.
NASA held several media briefings over the summer to provide updates on the ongoing investigation into the thruster issue and how its findings might affect the remainder of the flight. Initially, NASA and Boeing officials attended the briefings jointly, but no Boeing representatives were present at the August press conference.
That month, NASA was considering how and when to return Wilmore and Williams safely. Asked why Boeing was absent from most of the briefings in August, NASA officials said the updates were for NASA consideration and therefore no company representatives were included.
On August 24, NASA announced it would ask SpaceX to return the astronauts and fly Boeing’s Starliner back to Earth without a crew member. The pair will stay on the space station until February, after which they will return with the next ISS crew.

The manned test flight was intended to demonstrate that Boeing could reliably transport astronauts to the space station and pave the way for NASA to approve regular flights to the orbital laboratory.
Boeing developed the Starliner spacecraft under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, an effort launched in 2011 to support privately built spacecraft to fill the gap left by NASA’s retired space shuttle fleet.
Even before its latest flight, the Starliner program was more than $1.5 billion over budget and years behind schedule: In 2019, an uncrewed test flight to the space station was canceled due to technical issues, forcing the company to wait until 2022 to try again.
Rival company SpaceX is developing its Crew Dragon spacecraft as part of the same program, with regular flights to the space station beginning in 2020. NASA has said it wants two private companies to certify such flights so it has redundant options for reaching low Earth orbit.
NASA is considering keeping its two astronauts there until February as they make their way to the International Space Station after the Boeing spacecraft encountered problems during the flight.
NASA said Wednesday it was still considering options for how to return astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams safely to Earth and that no plans had been made yet, but officials acknowledged more openly than before that it may decide to use a SpaceX capsule instead.
“Our first option is to return Butch and Suni aboard Starliner,” Steve Stich, NASA’s commercial crew program manager, said at a press conference Wednesday. “But we are making the necessary plans to ensure we have other options and are working with SpaceX to ensure we are prepared to respond.”
Wilmore and Williams arrived at the space station on June 6 on the first crewed test flight of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. The original plan was to stay in space for about a week. But a problem with five of Starliner’s thrusters caused the spacecraft’s propulsion system to leak helium, leaving the astronauts stranded in space for more than two months while engineers on the ground gather data on the problem and attempt to troubleshoot it.
The mission was planned as the final step before Boeing is approved to launch regular crewed flights to the ISS, a process whose fate is now up in the air.
NASA gave no indication of when astronauts might return in the Boeing capsule, but Stich said a final decision would need to be made by mid-August.

Meanwhile, the launch of one of SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which was scheduled to deliver a new crew of four to the space station later this month, has been postponed to give NASA and Boeing more time to address issues with the Starliner.
SpaceX mission (Crew 9) NASA officials said they could change plans to send just two crew members into space on the spacecraft instead of four, and use the capsule to bring Wilmore and Williams home.
Ken Bowersox, associate administrator for NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate, said there had been disagreements over how to bring the astronauts home safely.
“We have to admit that when we have disagreements, it’s not fun,” Bowersox said. “Those discussions can be painful, but that’s what makes us a good organization, and it helps us make good decisions in the future when we get to that point, and I don’t think we’re that far away.”
If Wilmore and Williams were to return to Earth in a separate spacecraft, mission managers could adjust Starliner’s software to detach it from the space station and return to Earth without a crew member, Stich said.
Boeing officials did not attend the briefing, but a company representative said in a statement that “we remain confident in Starliner’s capabilities and flight principles.”
“Should NASA decide to modify the mission, we will take the necessary steps to prepare Starliner for an uncrewed return,” the statement said.
The thruster problem occurred as Starliner approached the space station in June, forcing a delay in the docking process. Meanwhile, the helium leak was already on mission managers’ radar before launch, who said at the time that the leak was unlikely to affect the mission or the safety of astronauts.
NASA and Boeing engineers have been trying to replicate on-orbit conditions with a test engine at NASA’s White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico, and mission managers have also conducted two “hot-fire” tests in space, in which the capsule’s thrusters were briefly fired while docked to the space station.
Stich said Wednesday that tests showed that small Teflon seals expand under high temperatures, possibly contributing to the thruster failure. When the seals expand, they likely block the flow of propellant to the thrusters, he said.
Further testing is needed to understand the cause of the potential blockage and why it went undetected during the recent hot-fire test. Last week, NASA reported that the thrusters used to steer the spacecraft in orbit and guide it into position before re-entering Earth’s atmosphere appeared to be stable.
“This gives us a lot of confidence in the thruster, but we can’t prove with complete certainty that what we’re seeing in orbit is exactly what we’re replicating on the ground,” Stich said.
The recent Starliner debacle has been a blow to Boeing, especially since the program was already years behind schedule and more than $1.5 billion over budget before astronauts even launched.
Boeing and SpaceX developed the space capsule as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, an effort launched more than a decade ago to help private companies build new spacecraft to carry astronauts to low Earth orbit. The program began after NASA retired the Space Shuttle.
SpaceX has been ferrying astronauts to the International Space Station since 2020.

You can also think about it the other way around: if you push an update to every computer on your network at the same time, by the time you find a problem, it’s too late to contain the impact. Alternatively, with a phased rollout, the update is pushed to users in small groups, usually accelerating over time. If you start updating 50 systems at once and then they all immediately lose connection, you hope you notice the problem before you update the next 50 million systems.
If you don’t do a staged rollout, you need to test the update before pushing it to users. The extent of pre-release testing is usually up for debate; there are countless configurations of hardware, software, and user requirements, and your testing regime must narrow down what’s important, and hope that nothing is overlooked. Thankfully, if 100% of computers with the update installed experience crashes and become inoperable until you manually apply a tedious fix, it’s easy to conclude that you didn’t test enough.

In CrowdStrike’s defense, I can understand why this happened. The company offers a service called “endpoint protection,” which if you’ve been in the Windows ecosystem for a few years, might be easiest to think of as antivirus. It’s built for the enterprise market, not the consumer market, and not just protects against common malware, but also tries to prevent individual computers used by companies from gaining a foothold on the corporate network.
This applies not only to PCs used by large corporations that need to provide every employee with a keyboard and mouse, but also to any other business with large amounts of cheap, flexible machines. If you left your house on Friday, you know what that means: advertising displays, point-of-sale terminals, and self-service kiosks were all affected.
The comparison is relevant because CrowdStrike is in a space where speed is crucial. The worst-case scenario, at least until last week, is a ransom worm like WannaCry or NotPetya, malware that not only does significant damage to infected machines but also spreads automatically in and out of corporate networks. So its first line of defense operates quickly: Rather than waiting for a weekly or monthly release schedule for software updates, the company pushes out files daily to address the latest threats to the systems it protects.
Though limited, even a phased rollout could cause real damage. WannaCry destroyed many NHS computers during the few hours it spread unchecked, before being accidentally halted by British security researcher Marcus Hutchins while trying to figure out how it worked. In this scenario, a phased rollout could result in loss of life. Delays in testing could be even more costly.
That means updates shouldn’t cause this kind of problem: rather than new code that runs on each machine, updates are more like dictionary updates that tell already-installed CrowdStrike software what new threats to look out for and how to recognize them.
At the loosest level, you can think of it as something like this article: You’re probably reading it through some application, like a web browser, an email client, or the Guardian app. (If you’ve arranged for someone to print this and deliver it to you with your morning coffee, congratulations!) We haven’t done a staged rollout or full testing of the article, because nothing would happen there.

Have you ever experienced this feeling before? On a blazing hot day, the desire to plunge into a cool stream of water intensifies by the minute. The water appears pristine, clear, and incredibly refreshing. However, in reality, it could be extensively contaminated.
Even the purest rivers can harbor harmful bacteria, including fecal bacteria originating from livestock manure and human waste.
In a recent announcement, the Designated bathing area in the UK, a favored holiday spot, has been a subject of concern due to issues such as being submerged in sewage and incidents of rowers contracting E. coli infections. To address these concerns, we consulted with water and sanitation expert Professor David Werner to provide essential information for safely enjoying wild swimming this summer.
Werner’s research delves into treated sewage, stormwater (untreated sewage overflows following heavy rains), and occasionally illegal sewage disposal in dry weather. These factors impact both human health and ecosystem health. While human waste is discharged into oceans, rivers tend to exhibit higher concentrations of human waste and the accompanying harmful bacteria due to lower dilution levels compared to water bodies, increasing the risk of exposure to harmful substances.
(Notably, a microbiology professor, William Gays, mentioned in BBC Science Focus that rivers have only recently been subjected to the same microbial testing as coastal waters. Moreover, wastewater discharged into the ocean is often subjected to more stringent treatment standards than rivers, including ultraviolet disinfection.)
The following guidelines mainly focus on rivers but are also relevant for coastal swimming activities.

How do diseases enter rivers, and what is the risk of swimming in them?
Fecal contamination doesn’t always mean significant. The majority of people’s stool contains beneficial bacteria essential for our health. However, the stool of an ill individual harbors bacteria responsible for the illness, potentially leading to disease transmission.
According to Warner, the risk of contracting a disease from a river is relatively low, but it escalates if you ingest river water (discouraged but not impossible).
This can result in unpleasant symptoms like infections and diarrhea. The worst-case scenario involves acquiring antibiotic-resistant bacteria, an eventuality deemed highly improbable by Warner.
So, should one abstain from wild swimming altogether? Ultimately, it boils down to whether you are willing to accept the (generally minimal) risk for the mental health benefits, as Warner highlights.
“There is no such thing as absolute safety or zero risk,” he states. “Each time we embark on a car journey, we weigh the trip’s advantages against the accident risks. Similarly, outdoor recreation offers significant mental health perks, particularly for urban dwellers.”
How to safeguard yourself from sewage while swimming
Warner and his team are currently devising a device capable of swiftly testing water for contaminants, akin to a lateral flow corona test, though substantial research is required to materialize this concept.
Until this technology is available, several straightforward methods can help identify sewage presence while swimming in rivers this summer. Here are Warner’s recommendations:
1. Choose your spot wisely
According to Werner, it is crucial to avoid swimming downstream from a sewage treatment plant under any circumstances. While untreated sewage overflows are a common concern, treating sewage does not completely eradicate the risks; it merely diminishes them.
“Treating wastewater significantly reduces the levels of harmful bacteria, possibly by a factor of 1,000, but it doesn’t eliminate them,” Werner explains.
“Hence, if a location is situated immediately downstream of a treatment plant discharge point, one can expect a consistent presence of fecal bacteria due to the continuous discharge.”
Individuals can consult the “Poop Map” and trace their local river upstream to identify any treatment facilities along the route.
2. Check the poop map
UK organizations such as Rivers Trust and Surfers Against Sewage have developed an interactive map showcasing regular treated sewage discharges and anticipated untreated sewage overflows across the UK in 2023.

3. Monitor the weather
Despite the allure of swimming on a sunny day, verify there hasn’t been rainfall for a few days. Swimming post-rainfall significantly heightens the possibility of encountering contaminated water due to sewer overflows and increased water release during heavy downpours.
To compound matters, even as a dry spell seems to prevail and swimming appears safe, hidden risks could lurk upstream. Thunderstorms can unleash localized rainfall, implying that upstream areas may experience heavy showers despite sunshine at your location.
4. Steer clear of small rivers
In addition to potentially turbid waters, small rivers tend to exacerbate the situation as sewage, whether treated or untreated, is less diluted in these settings.
Warner adheres to a safety benchmark stipulating that raw sewage minimal dilution should be 1,000 times for paddling and over 10,000 times for swimming. While calculating these dilution levels is not advised, the underlying principle is straightforward: “A large river with vigorous flow signifies ample dilution,” Werner asserts.
Nonetheless, disparate river segments need not cause undue concern: while one side may seem stagnant relative to the center, the water mixes uniformly.
5. Keep tabs on the paper trail
Exhibit prudence: refrain from swimming if toilet paper is visible. Alarming indicators surpass toilet paper and include wet wipes and sanitary pads crafted from plastic materials that should not be flushed but often are.
According to Werner, unlike toilet paper and human excrement, these items do not disintegrate in swiftly moving waters.
6. Stay informed
“After frolicking in the river, diligently cleanse yourself. Embrace standard personal hygiene,” stresses Werner.
