Quantum computers, utilizing qubits formed from extremely cold atoms, are rapidly increasing in size and may soon surpass classical computers in computational power. However, the frequency of errors poses a significant challenge to their practicality. Researchers have now found a way to replenish and recycle these qubits, enhancing computation reliability.

All existing quantum systems are susceptible to errors and are currently unable to perform calculations that would give them an edge over traditional computers. Nonetheless, researchers are making notable advancements in the creation of error correction methods to address this issue.

One approach involves dividing the components of quantum computers, known as qubits, into two primary categories: operational qubits that manipulate data and auxiliary qubits that monitor errors.

Developing large quantities of high-quality qubits for either function remains a significant technical hurdle. Matt Norcia and his team at Atom Computing have discovered a method to lessen the qubit requirement by recycling or substituting auxiliary qubits. They demonstrated that an error-tracking qubit can be effectively reused for up to 41 consecutive runs.

“The calculation’s duration is likely to necessitate numerous rounds of measurement. Ideally, we want to reuse qubits across these rounds, minimizing the need for a continuous influx of new qubits,” Norcia explains.

The team utilized qubits derived from electrically neutral ytterbium atoms that were chilled close to absolute zero using lasers and electromagnetic pulses. By employing “optical tweezers,” they can manipulate each atom’s quantum state, which encodes information. This method allowed them to categorize the quantum computer into three distinct zones.

In the first zone, 128 optical tweezers directed the qubits to conduct calculations. The second zone comprised 80 tweezers that held qubits for error tracking, or that could be swapped in for faulty qubits. The third zone functioned as a storage area, keeping an additional 75 qubits that had recently been deemed useful. These last two areas enabled researchers to reset or exchange the auxiliary qubit as needed.

Norcia noted that it was challenging to establish this setup due to stray laser light interfering with nearby qubits. Consequently, researchers had to develop a highly precise laser control and a method to adjust the state of data qubits, ensuring they remained “hidden” from specific harmful light types.

“The reuse of Ancilla is crucial for advancing quantum computing,” says Yuval Borger from QuEra, a U.S. quantum computing firm. Without this ability, even basic calculations would necessitate millions, or even billions, of qubits, making it impractical for current or forthcoming quantum hardware, he adds.

This challenge is recognized widely across the atom-based qubit research community. “Everyone acknowledges that neutral atoms understand the necessity to reset and reload during calculations,” Norcia asserts.

For instance, Borger highlights that a team from Harvard and MIT employed similar techniques to maintain the operation of their quantum computer using 3000 ultra-cold rubidium atoms for several hours. Other quantum setups, like Quantinuum’s recently launched Helios machine, which uses ions controlled by light as qubits, also feature qubit reusability.

Justice Minister: AI Chatbots Could Reduce Errors in Prisoner Release Decisions

The Justice Minister informed the House of Lords on Monday that artificial intelligence chatbots could play a role in preventing the accidental release of prisoners from jail.

James Timpson announced that permission had been granted for the use of AI at HMP Wandsworth after a specialized team was assembled to explore “quick-fix solutions”.

This response follows a dual investigation initiated last week after a sex offender and fraudster was mistakenly released from a prison in south-west London.

Opposition MPs have seized upon recent release blunders as proof of governmental negligence amid turmoil in the criminal justice system.

Attorney-General David Lammy is set to address Parliament regarding the number of missing prisoners when MPs reconvene on Tuesday.

It is reported that AI technology can assist in reading and processing paperwork, aiding staff to cross-check names and prevent inmates from concealing prior offenses under false identities. It can merge various datasets while calculating release dates and notifications.

Currently, many of these tasks are performed by untrained staff utilizing calculators and piles of paperwork.

In response to a query in the Upper House on Monday, Lord Timpson remarked: “The frequency of releases from one prison to another varies significantly. At HMP Gartree, the average is just two releases per year, while at Wandsworth it reaches 2,000.”

“That’s why our digital team visited HMP Wandsworth last week to explore potential opportunities for adopting digital solutions quickly.

“We have an AI team in place, and they believe an AI chatbot could provide significant assistance, among other benefits. It can also cross-reference aliases, as we know some criminals may use over 20 different names.”

He further stated: “We have authorized the team to move forward with this.”

Brahim Kadour Sherif, 24, was mistakenly released on October 29 and was re-arrested on Friday following a police operation.

He was serving time for burglary with intent to steal and had a record for indecent assault.


Sherif is believed to have overstayed his visitor visa after arriving in the UK in 2019 and was in the process of being deported.

Another inmate, Billy Smith, 35, who was accidentally released from Wandsworth on Monday after being sentenced to 45 months for fraud, voluntarily returned to custody on Thursday.

The wrongful release of these two individuals heightened scrutiny on Ramy, who had introduced a new checklist for prison staff just days earlier after mistakenly releasing sex offender Hadush Kebatu on October 24.

Kebatu, who arrived in the UK via a small boat, created a disturbance in Epping, Essex, after sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and a woman. He was improperly released from Chelmsford Prison and tried to return to the prison at least four times before finally being arrested in Finsbury Park, North London, and given funds for deportation back to Ethiopia.

According to government statistics, 262 prisoners were mistakenly released over the 12 months leading to March this year, marking a 128% increase from 115 the previous year. The majority of these incidents (233) occurred in prisons, with the remaining 29 happening in court settings.

Unions and prison governors have cited the complicated early release protocols and reliance on paper systems as contributing factors to the recent surge in errors, with numerous documents going missing between prisons, courts, and the Ministry of Justice.

The chief inspector of prisons remarked that the recent surge in early prisoner releases indicates “a system on the brink of collapse”.

In a recent piece, Charlie Taylor stated that the escalation in erroneous early releases is “concerning and potentially hazardous”.

Last weekend, reports surfaced indicating that four individuals remain unaccounted for following wrongful releases, with two having been released in June this year and two more scheduled for release in 2024.

On Monday, government sources suggested that one of these individuals had been apprehended.

However, in a sign of an ongoing crisis within the prison system, it appears he was never mistakenly released, but was incorrectly listed among those who had been.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson commented: “These incidents highlight the nature and extent of the prison crisis this government has inherited.

“It’s evident that these issues won’t be resolved overnight, which is why we are constructing 14,000 new prison spaces, engaging technical experts to modernize systems, and providing immediate support to staff.”

Experts are cautioning that the integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare may lead to a legally intricate blame game when determining responsibility for medical errors.

The field of AI for clinical applications is rapidly advancing, with researchers developing an array of tools, from algorithms for scan interpretation to systems for assisting in diagnosis. AI is also being designed to improve hospital operations, such as enhancing bed utilization and addressing supply chain issues.

While specialists acknowledge the potential benefits of this technology in healthcare, they express concerns regarding insufficient testing of AI tools’ effectiveness and uncertainties about accountability in cases of negative patient outcomes.

“There will undoubtedly be situations where there’s a perception that something has gone awry, and people will seek someone to blame,” remarked Derek Angus, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh.

The Journal of the American Medical Association hosted the Jama Summit on Artificial Intelligence last year, gathering experts from various fields, including clinicians, tech companies, regulatory bodies, insurers, ethicists, lawyers, and economists.

According to the report of results, of which Angus is the lead author, the publication discusses the nature of AI tools, their application in healthcare, and the various challenges they present, including legal implications.

Co-author Glenn Cohen, a Harvard Law School professor, indicated that patients might find it challenging to demonstrate negligence concerning AI product usage or design. The report also highlights concerns regarding the evaluation of AI tools, pointing out that many fall outside the jurisdiction of regulatory bodies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Angus commented, “For clinicians, efficacy typically translates to improved health outcomes, but there’s no assurance that regulators will mandate evidence.” He added that once an AI tool is launched, its application can vary widely among users of differing skills, in diverse clinical environments, and with various patient types. There’s little certainty that what seems advantageous in a pre-approval context will manifest as intended.

The report details numerous obstacles to evaluating AI tools, noting that clinical application is often necessary for thorough evaluation, while current assessment methods can be prohibitively expensive and cumbersome.

Mr. Angus emphasized that investing in digital infrastructure is crucial and that adequate funding is essential for effectively assessing AI tools’ performance in healthcare. “One point raised during the summit was that the most respected tools are often the least utilized, whereas the most adopted tools tend to be the least valued.”

Is it possible for rounding errors in software to lead to plane crashes?
