AI Surveillance Dog Alerts Parents About Smart Toys After Teddy Bear Discusses Kinks

With the holiday season around the corner and Black Friday on the horizon, one category gaining attention on gift lists is artificial intelligence-powered products.

This development raises important concerns about the potential dangers of smart toys to children, as consumer advocates caution that AI might negatively impact kids’ safety and development. This trend has sparked calls for more rigorous testing and government regulation of these toys.

“The marketing and functionality of these toys are alarming, especially since there’s minimal research indicating they benefit children, alongside the absence of regulations governing AI toys,” stated Rachel Franz, director of the US initiative Young Children Thrive Offline, Fair Play, which aims to protect kids from large tech companies.

Last week, these concerns were tragically exemplified when an AI-powered teddy bear began discussing explicit sexual topics.

FoloToy’s Kumma uses an OpenAI model and responded to queries about kinks. A concerning report from the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) suggests themes of bondage and role-play as ways to enhance relationships, as detailed in the study.

“It took minimal effort to explore various sexually sensitive subjects and yield content that parents would likely find objectionable,” remarked Teresa Murray, who leads PIRG’s consumer watchdog group.

Products like teddy bears belong to a rapidly expanding global smart toy market, valued at $16.7 billion in 2023 according to market research.

China’s smart toy industry is particularly significant, boasting over 1,500 AI toy companies that are now reaching international markets, as reported by MIT Technology Review.

In addition to Shanghai’s FoloToy, the California-based Curio collaborates with OpenAI to create Grok, a stuffed toy reminiscent of Elon Musk’s chatbot, voiced by musician Grimes. In June, Mattel, the parent company of brands like Barbie and Hot Wheels, announced its own partnership with OpenAI to develop “AI-powered products and experiences.”

Before PIRG’s findings on unsettling teddy bears, parents, tech researchers, and lawmakers had already expressed worries about the effects of bots on minors’ mental health. October saw the chatbot company Character.AI declare a ban on users under 18 after a lawsuit claimed its bot exacerbated adolescent depression and contributed to suicide.

Murray noted that AI toys might be especially perilous because, unlike previous smart toys with programmed replies, bots “can engage in unfettered conversations with children and lack clear boundaries, as we’ve seen.”

Jacqueline Woolley, director of the Child Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin, warned that this could elicit sexually explicit discussions, and children might form attachments to bots over human or imaginary friends, potentially stunting their development.

For instance, it’s beneficial for a child to engage in disagreements with friends and learn conflict resolution. Woolley, who advised PIRG on its research, explained that such interactions are less likely to occur with bots, which frequently rely on flattery.

“I’m worried about inappropriate bonding,” Woolley commented.

Franz of Fair Play emphasized that companies utilize AI toys to gather data from children yet provide little transparency regarding their data practices. She noted that the lack of security surrounding this data could expose users to risks, including hackers gaining control of AI products.

“Children might share their innermost thoughts with toys due to the trust toys establish,” remarked Franz. “This kind of surveillance is both unnecessary and inappropriate.”

Despite these apprehensions, PIRG is not advocating for a ban on AI toys with potential educational benefits, such as those that assist children in learning a second language or state capitals, according to Murray.

“There’s nothing wrong with educational tools, but that doesn’t imply they should become a child’s best friend or enable them to share everything,” she stated.

Murray confirmed that the organization is pushing for stricter regulations on these toys for children under 13, though specific policy details have yet to be outlined.

Franz further underscored the need for independent research to validate the safety of these products for children, suggesting they should be taken off shelves until this research is completed.

“We require both short-term and long-term independent studies on the effects of children’s interactions with AI toys, especially regarding social-emotional and cognitive development,” Franz said.

Following PIRG’s report, OpenAI declared it would suspend FoloToy, and the company’s CEO informed CNN that they had withdrawn Kuma from the market and were “conducting an internal safety review.”

On Thursday, 80 organizations, including Fair Play, issued a statement: urging families to refrain from purchasing AI toys this holiday season.

“AI toys are marketed as safe and beneficial for learning, despite their effects not being evaluated by independent research,” the statement noted. “In contrast, traditional teddy bears and toys do not pose the same risks as AI toys and have demonstrated benefits for children’s development.”


Curio, the creator of Grok toys, informed the Guardian via email that after reviewing PIRG’s report, they were “proactively working with our team to address any concerns while continuously monitoring content and interactions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for children.”

Mattel stated that its initial products powered by OpenAI are “targeted at families and older users” and clarified that “the OpenAI API is not designed for users under 13.”

“AI complements, rather than replaces, traditional play, and we prioritize safety, privacy, creativity, and responsible innovation,” the company affirmed.

“While it’s encouraging that Mattel asserts its AI products are not for young children, scrutiny of who actually engages with the toys and who they are marketed to reveals that they are indeed aimed at young children,” Franz noted, alluding to prior privacy concerns with Mattel’s smart products.

Franz added, “We are very interested in understanding what specific measures Mattel will implement to ensure that its OpenAI products aren’t inadvertently used by the very children attracted to its brand.”

CDC Surveillance Indicates Increase in Rabies Outbreaks Across the U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in the last 12 months, the United States has seen six rabies-related fatalities, marking the highest toll in years. From aggressive skunks in Kentucky to grey foxes and raccoons in Long Island, biodiversity in over a dozen states is facing a surge in lethal diseases, partly due to diminished natural habitats and improved monitoring.

“We are monitoring 15 potential outbreaks that may vary,” stated Dr. Ryan Wallace, leader of the CDC’s rabies division. Areas affected by these outbreaks include Nassau County, New York, which, last month, showed concerns about rabies beyond the notorious wildlife, with states like Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Alaska, Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, North Carolina, Oregon, and certain Vermont regions also noted.

“There seems to be an increase in inquiries and reports from various parts of the US,” Wallace commented. “It remains to be seen whether these numbers will show a significant rise by the end of the year. However, for now, we are experiencing a high volume during peak rabies season.”

Rabies is found in all states except Hawaii, with bats being the primary carriers of human rabies infections. According to the CDC, they are also the species most likely to be infected with the virus.

Each year, approximately 1.4 million Americans receive a series of vaccinations to guard against potential rabies exposure, as reported by the CDC.

Samantha Lang was among those last month. The 22-year-old believed a bat had bitten her after one flew into her apartment through a ceiling gap in Greenwood, Indiana. The day after noticing a small mark on her arm, she found the bat hanging from her air conditioning vent. Upon contacting local health authorities, she was advised to receive post-exposure rabies prophylaxis, which she promptly did.

“I didn’t think it was a big deal,” Lang remarked.

Rabies viruses infiltrate the central nervous system and are nearly always deadly once symptoms manifest. Early symptoms, which can appear within a week to a year post-exposure, mimic influenza, rapidly evolving into confusion, paralysis, difficulty swallowing, and hallucinations, often resulting in death within a few weeks.

Experts express concern regarding the uptick in human rabies fatalities last year. In contrast, between 2015 and 2024, the CDC documented 17 human rabies cases.

Most rabies exposures happen through the saliva of infected wildlife and can penetrate through wounds, eyes, or mouths, making bites particularly hazardous. Prior to the 1960s, the majority of human rabies infections originated from domestic pets, especially dogs. Strict vaccination regulations have effectively eradicated rabies in dogs across the US.

A stark rise in wildlife rabies cases has been noted in Franklin County, near North Carolina’s Research Triangle, which has seen confirmed cases in wildlife double over the past year.

“This year’s rabies season has been alarming with a 100% rise in confirmed cases,” remarked county health director Scott Lavigne.

Lavigne believes that the expansion of urban areas into wildlife habitats is a significant factor accelerating the spread of rabies.

“Franklin County’s population has increased by 35% since 2010, creating new demands for housing,” he explained. “This leads to land development and the growth of residential neighborhoods.”

Animals that were previously secluded are now more densely populated, increasing the likelihood of rabies spreading among them, Lavigne noted.

Often, individuals are unaware of their exposure to rabid animals. Fatalities have been recorded from individuals who did not realize they were bitten or who encountered a bat and declined necessary vaccinations.

In December, a California teacher succumbed to rabies a month after handling bats in her classroom, unaware of her infection.

Viruses adapt and present differently based on animal species and strains. Many assume rabid animals are aggressive, yet sometimes infected creatures exhibit calm behavior.

“There’s a rabies strain that can make animals unusually friendly,” Lavigne shared. “A family observed a raccoon in their backyard that appeared ill yet was friendly and sought affection.”

The family cared for and fed the raccoon until it died, subsequently calling animal services to remove the body. “Thankfully they did because it tested positive, and the entire family required vaccinations,” Lavigne noted. “If they hadn’t contacted animal services, they would have remained oblivious.”

Concerns Regarding Dog Vaccination Rates

With the increasing spread of rabies among wildlife, veterinarians are particularly worried about vaccine hesitancy among pet owners. A 2023 survey published in a journal revealed that nearly 40% of respondents felt the dog vaccine was unsafe, while 37% believed it might cause cognitive issues in dogs, such as autism.

Gabriella Motta, a veterinarian from Glenolene, Pennsylvania, and a co-author of the study, has encountered many clients apprehensive about the vaccine’s safety for their dogs.

“This is a concern that may escalate in the future,” Motta explained. “If vaccination rates continue to dwindle due to hesitancy, could we witness an increase in rabies not only among wildlife but also in pets? We’re starting to raise alarms.”

The rabies vaccine has evolved significantly from when injections were given in patients’ abdomens after exposure. The current regimen involves administering a dose of immunoglobulin containing rabies antibodies right after exposure, followed by four additional vaccine injections into the arm.

Experts advise that rabies should be suspected whenever a wild animal displays abnormal behavior.

CDC Discreetly Scales Back Food Poisoning Surveillance Program

The federal-state collaboration that oversees foodborne illness monitoring discreetly diminished its operations nearly two months ago.

As of July 1st, the Food Surveillance for Active Foodborne Diseases (FoodNet) program has slashed its surveillance efforts to just two pathogens: Salmonella and Shiga Toxin-Producing E. coli (STEC), according to a spokesperson from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as reported by NBC News.

Prior to this, the program was monitoring infections from six additional pathogens: Campylobacter, Cyclospora, Listeria, Shigella, Vibrio, and Yersinia. Some of these pathogens can trigger particularly severe or life-threatening diseases, especially in vulnerable populations such as newborns, pregnant individuals, or those with compromised immune systems.

While states involved in the program are no longer obligated to track the six pathogens, they are still allowed to conduct their own surveillance.

Food safety experts express concern that this underreported decision may hinder public health officials from recognizing trends in foodborne diseases.

FoodNet operates as a partnership between the CDC, the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Agriculture, and ten state health departments, covering a surveillance area that includes about 54 million people, or 16% of the U.S. population.

A CDC representative commented, “FoodNet’s primary focus will remain on Salmonella and we will uphold both the infrastructure and the quality of our representation.”

A document shared with Connecticut’s Department of Public Health, as reported by NBC News, indicates that “funding does not align with the resources necessary to sustain comprehensive FoodNet surveillance for all eight pathogens.”

On Monday, a CDC spokesperson mentioned that other systems continue to perform national surveillance for the six pathogens removed from FoodNet. For instance, state health departments can still report cases through the National Notification Disease Surveillance System. Additionally, the CDC’s Listeria Initiative gathers laboratory-confirmed cases of listeriosis, a serious infection caused by consuming Listeria-contaminated food.

Nonetheless, food safety experts stress that FoodNet is the only active federal surveillance system monitoring multiple foodborne diseases. Other federal systems rely on passive reporting, meaning that the CDC depends on state health departments to notify them of cases.

Experts fear that without proactive monitoring of all eight pathogens, public health officials might struggle to accurately compare trends over time or to detect increases in specific diseases. There are also concerns that a reduction in FoodNet operations could hinder rapid responses to outbreaks.

Barbara Kowalcyk, director of the Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition Security at George Washington University, described the decision to cut FoodNet surveillance as “very disappointing.”

“The work that I and countless others have devoted over the past two to three decades to enhance food safety is now at risk,” she stated. Kowalcyk’s advocacy for improved U.S. food safety policy arose after the death of her son from complications linked to foodborne E. coli infections in 2001.

Kowalcyk emphasized that federal food safety funding has failed to keep pace with inflation, and cuts to state health department funding likely impede the ability to sustain FoodNet surveillance. The CDC has requested $72 million for the Food Safety Budget for the fiscal years 2026 and 2024.

It remains unclear how the changes to FoodNet will impact monitoring at the state level.

The health departments of Oregon and Connecticut acknowledged awareness of the recent changes on Monday, while the Georgia Department of Public Health noted it had not yet received official updates from the CDC. Meanwhile, the New Mexico Health Department is awaiting notification from the CDC to clarify the future scope of surveillance.

The Maryland Department of Health indicated that their reporting will continue “regardless of the changes to the FoodNet network,” as state health providers and clinical laboratories must report cases for all eight pathogens monitored by FoodNet.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment warned that if funding decreases in 2026, it may have to scale back active surveillance for some pathogens.

This cloud-based framework, initially launched in 2022, enables Unit 8200 to store vast amounts of daily conversations over extended periods.

Meta faces renewed scrutiny over child safety concerns, with an investigation initiated by US Congress member Senator Josh Hawley. Recently, Reuters uncovered an internal document revealing the company’s policy allowing AI chatbots to engage in “romantic or sensual” chats with minors. Subsequently, the company modified these guidelines.

The overall backlash feels incredibly familiar.

The same journalist who published the original story about Jeff Horwitz at Reuters also released information regarding Facebook in the Wall Street Journal, which revealed that Meta acknowledged its platforms could contribute to teenage, particularly female, depression. Senator Hawley, who initiated the recent inquiry, had previously criticized Zuckerberg in early 2024 regarding child safety.

The familiar elements of this controversy evoke feelings of both anger and indifference. Will this ongoing turmoil result in increased regulations for Zuckerberg, or will the American public and lawmakers simply express resignation at the repetition?

The government-supported event kicked off with an audience of 12,000 gathered around a national speed skating rink, initially constructed for the 2022 Winter Olympics, as they sang the Chinese national anthem on Friday morning.

In addition to kickboxing, humanoids also participated in athletics, soccer, and dance competitions. One robot was unable to complete a 1500-meter distance as its head dislodged halfway through the course.

This San Francisco-based organization, recently valued at $170 billion, has introduced the Claude Opus 4 (along with the Claude Opus 4.1 Update), a substantial language model that allows for the comprehension, generation, and manipulation of human language.

Cambridge Dictionary announced on Sunday that it has added various new words to its lexicon, reflecting the Internet’s impact on our language.

“Internet culture significantly alters English, and documenting this evolution in a dictionary is quite intriguing,” noted Colin McIntosh, vocabulary program manager for the dictionary.

Among the newly added terms are “delulu,” referring to “traditional wife,” and a more elongated abbreviation for “delusion.” Both terms carry notable connotations—one related to marriage behaviors and the other highlighting social conservatism, where individuals choose to embrace misinformation rather than truth.

Notably, “Skibidi,” which gained recognition through the “Skibidi toilet” meme, was also entered into the dictionary. The associated clips often feature humorous lyrics like “shtibididob dob dob dob dob dob yes yes yes yes,” with the term “Skibidi” serving as a playful interjection.

In the Cambridge Dictionary, “Skibidi” is described as “a term that can have several interpretations; it may mean ‘cool’ or ‘bad’, or serve as a lighthearted joke with no definitive meaning.”

Reflecting on my childhood, my parents found the odd humor in shows like SpongeBob SquarePants, often leaving them puzzled. Imagine animated toilets capturing the bewildered faces of their parents.

While “TradWife” and “Delulu” hold specific meanings tied to human behaviors and emotions, “Skibidi” offers an emphatic and humorous filler devoid of genuine meaning. What verbal creations can ease the flood of captivating visuals, contrasting viewpoints, and marketing messages? Perhaps simply “Skibidi.”

Jean Baudrillard introduced the notion of “simulation,” creating language and imagery that lack genuine origins. His analysis of the media landscape of his time, particularly television, reflected similar sentiments. “Skibidi,” too, stands as a hyperreal term, indicative solely of the peculiar and ongoing distortion of significance it has accumulated online.

“Territories will no longer precede or survive, and in the future, the map will take precedence over the territory,” he noted in 1981.

This term does not preface TikTok nor is it poised to endure. The medium will overshadow the definition in the future.

Strategies in the Iran-Israel Conflict: Internet Blackouts, Cryptocurrency Destruction, and Home Surveillance

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran is not only a confrontation involving combatants, drones, and explosive devices but is also intensifying in the digital domain. Both nations have a rich history of engaging in cyber warfare. A significant point of contention is Iran’s nuclear initiative, which was famously attacked by the sophisticated Stuxnet worm—one of the early forms of cyber sabotage aimed at causing real-world damage.

In response to perceived threats, Iran recently enacted a near-total internet blackout. My colleague Johanna Bouyan provides insights:

According to CloudFlare, a cybersecurity firm, Iranian internet traffic is “currently averaging around 97% or lower compared to levels from a week ago.”

The reduction in internet speeds follows claims from an anti-Iranian hacking group, possibly linked to Israel, stating they had breached Iran’s state-owned bank, Sepa. A government spokesperson from Iran, Fateme Mohajelani, indicated on Twitter/X that officials were limiting internet access to thwart further cyber intrusion.

On Wednesday, concerns in Iran were validated. My colleague Dan Mirmo reports:

Hacking groups associated with Israel are purportedly behind a $900 million (£67 million) heist at Iran’s cryptocurrency exchange.

The group calling itself Gonjeshke Dalande, known for its predatory tactics, announced it had successfully hacked the Novitex exchange, mere days after asserting it had destroyed data at Iran’s state-owned bank.

Elliptic, a consultancy specializing in cryptocurrency crime, reported identifying over $900 million in cryptocurrency transfers to hacker wallets from Nobitex. The hackers effectively “burn” these assets, storing them in “vanity addresses” that lack encryption keys, thereby rendering them inaccessible, according to Elliptic.

Iran has attempted to retaliate; however, much like the broader conflict, Israel’s strikes appear to be more effective and disruptive. Israeli authorities have warned citizens that Iran is seizing internet-connected home security cameras to gather real-time intelligence. Bloomberg reports. Cybersecurity experts assert that Hamas and Russian hackers have employed similar tactics. While home security cameras may represent a new front in the cyber conflict, they lack the capability to interfere with central banking systems, as Israel has done.

By the end of Friday, Iran seemed to have lifted internet restrictions for some users, as reported by The New York Times. However, even those with limited access felt their connections were precarious.

City of Love? PornHub Takes a Stand Against Paris Over Children’s Age Verification Online

PornHub, widely regarded as the most visited adult content site globally, resumed operations in France after a three-week blackout.

The platform’s owner, Iro, suspended access in protest against a new French regulation requiring adult websites to verify user ages using credit cards or identification. Instead of implementing the age restriction, Pornhub opted to withdraw access for approximately 70 million users.

Following this, Pornhub returned online after French courts temporarily put the law on hold while reviewing its compliance with the European Union’s constitution. However, the dispute between Paris and Pornhub signifies a growing global dialogue around online age verification.

This debate occupies a challenging intersection of differing online regulations aimed at protecting children and upholding privacy and freedom of expression—an area fraught with complexity, even in the U.S., where digital regulations often aim for practicality.

As of now, over 20 states have enacted age verification laws affecting adult content websites. Pornhub has been forced to block access in 17 of these states. Texas, which boasts a population of 31 million, serves as a prime example. The state legislature passed a law in September 2023 mandating ID verification for accessing adult sites, causing Pornhub to go dark in Texas by March—greeting users with a message calling the law “invalid, accidental, dangerous.” Meanwhile, while access is still allowed in Louisiana under similar laws, site traffic has plummeted by 80%. This serves as a barrier to ID requirements. The U.S. Supreme Court is considering whether such laws infringe on constitutional rights to free speech.

Research on U.S. law indicates that these laws are ineffective in achieving their stated goals. Online search data suggests that individuals in states with age verification laws are searching for non-compliant adult sites to bypass age restrictions and using VPNs to disguise their locations from internet service providers.

Other battlegrounds extending beyond age verification include restrictions on social media for underage users. Australia, which has enacted a ban on minors accessing social media, is currently testing various enforcement technologies but has found them lacking.

Police Expansion of Live Facial Recognition Cameras: A Shift Towards ‘General’ Surveillance

A joint investigation by the Guardian and Liberty investigates showcases the rapid integration of this technology into UK law enforcement practices.

The government is simplifying police access to a wide range of image repositories, including passports and immigration databases, for past facial recognition searches, alongside significant financial investments in new hardware.

Live facial recognition entails real-time identification of faces captured by surveillance cameras, compared against a police watch list.

Conversely, retrospective facial recognition software allows police to match archived images from databases with those recorded on CCTV or similar systems.

The implementation of this technology is believed to be widespread in urban areas and transportation hubs across England and Wales, as noted in funding documents produced by South Wales Police and shared by the Metropolitan Police under the Freedom of Information Act.

The inaugural fixed live facial recognition camera is set to be trialed this summer in Croydon, located south of London.

This expansion comes despite the absence of any mention of facial recognition in the relevant congressional legislation.

Critics contend that police are permitted to “self-regulate” this technology, while there have been instances where previous algorithms disproportionately misidentified individuals from Black communities.

Following a 2020 Court of Appeals ruling that deemed South Wales Police’s live facial recognition practices unlawful, the Police College issued guidance emphasizing that “thresholds must be carefully set to enhance the likelihood of accurate alerts while keeping false alert rates within acceptable limits.”

There remains no statutory framework directing the standards or technology applied in this context.

Earlier this month, Police Minister Diane Johnson informed Congress that “we must evaluate whether a tailored legislative framework is necessary to govern the deployment of live facial recognition technology for law enforcement,” but further details from the Home Office are still pending.

Facial recognition cameras have been tested in London and South Wales since 2016; however, the pace at which police have adopted this technology has surged over the past year.

A survey conducted by the Guardian and Liberty revealed:

  • Last year, police scanned nearly 4.7 million faces using live facial recognition cameras—over double the figures from 2023. Data indicates that a minimum of 256 live recognition vans were operational in 2024.

  • Mobile units comprising 10 live facial recognition vans can be dispatched anywhere in the UK within a matter of days to bolster national capabilities, with eight police forces having deployed this technology, while the Met has four such vans.

  • Authorities are exploring a fixed infrastructure to establish a “safety zone” by deploying a network of live facial recognition cameras throughout London’s West End. Met officials indicated that this remains a viable option.

  • The force has nearly doubled the number of retrospective facial recognition searches on the National Police Database (PND) from 138,720 in 2023 to 252,798. The PND contains administrative mug shots, including many held unlawfully for individuals not formally charged or convicted of any offenses.

  • Over the past two years, more than 1,000 facial recognition searches have utilized the UK passport database, with officers increasingly accessing 110 matches from the Home Office immigration database last year. Authorities concluded that using a passport database for facial recognition “presents no risk.”

  • The Home Office is collaborating with the police to develop a new national facial recognition system termed strategic facial matchers, which will enable searches across various databases, including custody images and immigration records.

Lindsey Chiswick, Met’s Intelligence Director General and the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s Facial Recognition lead, stated that five out of five London residents support the police’s utilization of advanced technologies like facial recognition cameras, based on the survey findings.

Recently, registered sex offender David Chenelle, a 73-year-old from Lewisham, was sentenced to two years after being caught alone with a 6-year-old girl through live facial recognition technology. He had previously served nine years for 21 offenses involving children.

In 2024, the Met arrested 587 individuals, with 424 of those arrests backed by live facial recognition technology, leading to formal charges.

Among those arrested, 58 registered sex offenders faced serious violations of their conditions, with 38 subsequently charged.

Chiswick noted: “Given the limited resources and time available, the demand is high, and we see criminals exploiting technology on an expansive scale.

“There’s a chance for law enforcement to evolve. Discussions about leveraging AI are abundant, but we must embrace the opportunities presented by technology and data.”

Chiswick emphasized that the Met’s approach is to “proceed cautiously and evaluate at each phase,” while noting that “there may be advantages to some form of framework or statutory guidance.”

The MET employs facial recognition cameras in contexts aimed at ensuring statistical significance regarding gender or ethnic bias in misidentification instances.

Chiswick remarked: “I refuse to utilize biased algorithms in London. Each instance carries weight. The government raises concerns: Is there no issue regarding artificial intelligence?

“When selecting an algorithm’s purchaser, determining the training data employed, and assessing the origin of the technology, testing it thoroughly is paramount; you are obliged to operate within a specific context.”

Are there privacy concerns with the “Magic Eye” surveillance cameras at the Mental Health Unit’s NHS?

Lionel Tarassenko, professor of electrical engineering at Oxford University and founder of Oxehealth, said Oxevision only intermittently broadcast CCTV footage of patients. This is up to 15 seconds, and if clinical staff respond to alerts, they will only see blurry videos.

Tarassenko Lord said the paper reviewed by the National Institute team showed the benefits of Oxevision, including reduced self-harm, improved patient sleep and safety. He said: “There is no evidence that proper use of Oxevision technology is a factor that contributes to inpatient deaths. The experience of Oxevision patients is very positive.”
