AI Surveillance Dog Alerts Parents About Smart Toys After Teddy Bear Discusses Kinks

With the holiday season around the corner and Black Friday on the horizon, one category gaining attention on gift lists is artificial intelligence-powered products.

This development raises important concerns about the potential dangers of smart toys to children, as consumer advocates caution that AI might negatively impact kids’ safety and development. This trend has sparked calls for more rigorous testing and government regulation of these toys.

“The marketing and functionality of these toys are alarming, especially since there’s minimal research indicating they benefit children, alongside the absence of regulations governing AI toys,” stated Rachel Franz, director of the US initiative Young Children Thrive Offline, Fair Play, which aims to protect kids from large tech companies.

Last week, these concerns were tragically exemplified when an AI-powered teddy bear began discussing explicit sexual topics.

FoloToy’s Kumma uses an OpenAI model and responded to queries about kinks. A concerning report from the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) suggests themes of bondage and role-play as ways to enhance relationships, as detailed in the study.

“It took minimal effort to explore various sexually sensitive subjects and yield content that parents would likely find objectionable,” remarked Teresa Murray, who leads PIRG’s consumer watchdog group.

Products like teddy bears belong to a rapidly expanding global smart toy market, valued at $16.7 billion in 2023 according to market research.

China’s smart toy industry is particularly significant, boasting over 1,500 AI toy companies that are now reaching international markets, as reported by MIT Technology Review.

In addition to Shanghai’s FoloToy, the California-based Curio collaborates with OpenAI to create Grok, a stuffed toy reminiscent of Elon Musk’s chatbot, voiced by musician Grimes. In June, Mattel, the parent company of brands like Barbie and Hot Wheels, announced its own partnership with OpenAI to develop “AI-powered products and experiences.”

Before PIRG’s findings on unsettling teddy bears, parents, tech researchers, and lawmakers had already expressed worries about the effects of bots on minors’ mental health. October saw the chatbot company Character.AI declare a ban on users under 18 after a lawsuit claimed its bot exacerbated adolescent depression and contributed to suicide.

Murray noted that AI toys might be especially perilous because, unlike previous smart toys with programmed replies, bots “can engage in unfettered conversations with children and lack clear boundaries, as we’ve seen.”

Jacqueline Woolley, director of the Child Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin, warned that this could elicit sexually explicit discussions, and children might form attachments to bots over human or imaginary friends, potentially stunting their development.

For instance, it’s beneficial for a child to engage in disagreements with friends and learn conflict resolution. Woolley, who advised PIRG on its research, explained that such interactions are less likely to occur with bots, which frequently rely on flattery.

“I’m worried about inappropriate bonding,” Woolley commented.

Franz of Fair Play emphasized that companies utilize AI toys to gather data from children yet provide little transparency regarding their data practices. She noted that the lack of security surrounding this data could expose users to risks, including hackers gaining control of AI products.

“Children might share their innermost thoughts with toys due to the trust toys establish,” remarked Franz. “This kind of surveillance is both unnecessary and inappropriate.”

Despite these apprehensions, PIRG is not advocating for a ban on AI toys with potential educational benefits, such as those that assist children in learning a second language or state capitals, according to Murray.

“There’s nothing wrong with educational tools, but that doesn’t imply they should become a child’s best friend or enable them to share everything,” she stated.

Murray confirmed that the organization is pushing for stricter regulations on these toys for children under 13, though specific policy details have yet to be outlined.

Franz further underscored the need for independent research to validate the safety of these products for children, suggesting they should be taken off shelves until this research is completed.

“We require both short-term and long-term independent studies on the effects of children’s interactions with AI toys, especially regarding social-emotional and cognitive development,” Franz said.

Following PIRG’s report, OpenAI declared it would suspend FoloToy, and the company’s CEO informed CNN that they had withdrawn Kuma from the market and were “conducting an internal safety review.”

On Thursday, 80 organizations, including Fair Play, issued a statement: urging families to refrain from purchasing AI toys this holiday season.

“AI toys are marketed as safe and beneficial for learning, despite their effects not being evaluated by independent research,” the statement noted. “In contrast, traditional teddy bears and toys do not pose the same risks as AI toys and have demonstrated benefits for children’s development.”


Curio, the creator of Grok toys, informed the Guardian via email that after reviewing PIRG’s report, they were “proactively working with our team to address any concerns while continuously monitoring content and interactions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for children.”

Mattel stated that its initial products powered by OpenAI are “targeted at families and older users” and clarified that “the OpenAI API is not designed for users under 13.”

“AI complements, rather than replaces, traditional play, and we prioritize safety, privacy, creativity, and responsible innovation,” the company affirmed.

“While it’s encouraging that Mattel asserts its AI products are not for young children, scrutiny of who actually engages with the toys and who they are marketed to reveals that they are indeed aimed at young children,” Franz noted, alluding to prior privacy concerns with Mattel’s smart products.

Franz added, “We are very interested in understanding what specific measures Mattel will implement to ensure that its OpenAI products aren’t inadvertently used by the very children attracted to its brand.”

Envisioning a Future Where Smart Glasses Eliminate “AI Slop”

By the mid-2020s, the world became inundated with “AI slop.” Various forms of content—images, videos, music, emails, advertisements, speeches, and TV shows—were generated by artificial intelligence and often felt unoriginal and unengaging. While some experiences occasionally offered amusement, many were dull and soulless, sometimes leading to harmful misinterpretations. Interactions with others raised doubts—was the person on the other end of the call genuine? Many were repulsed and eager to escape from this perplexing landscape.

There was no “Butler’s Crusade,” a fictional revolt against the thinking machines. The book title references Samuel Butler’s insightful 1863 letter discussing machine evolution, titled “Darwin in the Machines.” Ironically, the solution emerged through innovative applications of AI.

One tech firm unveiled a series of smart glasses, featuring an augmented reality (AR) display equipped with built-in cameras, microphones, and headphones. By 2028, engineers from the Reclaim Reality Foundation adapted this tech for smart glasses, utilizing bespoke AI to eliminate any AI-generated content. Wearing non-smart glasses functioned as a form of negative AR, presenting an unfiltered reality.

Roaming the streets with DumbGlasses, later dubbed X-ray specs due to their ability to see beyond the surface, felt akin to subscribing to ad-free media. These glasses stripped away AI-created banners and seamlessly inserted natural scenery, ensuring that every conversation or song was crafted using classic analog methods. Users embraced X-ray specs as a means to unwind, declutter their minds, and break free from the deluge of AI. Many proudly displayed their status with T-shirts and badges touting slogans like “AI Vegan,” “Real or Nothing,” and “Slop Free Zone.”

As we moved into the 2030s, electronic contact lenses and tiny ear implants emerged that could perform similar functions.

The online domain posed a different challenge. There, escaping the grip of AI and relentless algorithmic profiling proved far more difficult.


Engineers took that technology into smart glasses and utilized custom AI to eliminate any AI-generated content.

One method allowed users to access search engines without activating the AI summaries. In the 2020s, one such option was: startpage.com. Some clever hacks employed expletives in search queries, circumventing AI-generated summaries. Nonetheless, even with these workarounds, evading AI profiling and targeting on social media platforms remained nearly impossible. Given the overwhelming dominance of major tech companies over social media, navigation, and the online realm, disengaging was far easier said than done. Yet, few were willing to abandon everything the Internet revolution had gifted us; they yearned for a digital universe to explore and rich online experiences.

The solution manifested as a new kind of network. Beyond the standard internet and the dark web, accessible only via specific browsers and passcodes, emerged veriweb (from veritas, Latin for truth). This network featured content entirely free from AI influence. Collaborating with Reclaim Reality, artists, musicians, and writers devised an infallible system, akin to blockchain used for verifying cryptocurrency transactions, ensuring that every piece of content had verifiable human origins. Veriweb, or the transparent web, became the trusted haven for reliable information and journalism, as users could trace the origin of their content. Wikipedia, which struggled with AI-generated material throughout the 2020s, transitioned to Veriweb in 2029. Traditional news entities followed suit, eager to assert their credibility in a post-AI landscape. Moreover, veriweb ensured that users remained unmonitored, unprofiled, and untouched by AI algorithms.

As millions flocked to this platform, humanity rediscovered connections and creativity. While much AI utilization persisted in personal tasks—like medical diagnoses—the intellectual stagnation that plagued society since the 2020s began to dissipate as individuals more actively engaged in their actions rather than leaving them to machines.

People discovered that navigating the vast digital world without algorithmic guidance diminished their sense of curated and personalized experiences. Additionally, the extensive collection of sensitive data by tech giants and the colossal revenues derived from targeted exploitation of that data became distant memories, evoking little sorrow among the populace.

<p class="dcr-130mj7b">The <a href="https://britishgasenergytrust.org.uk/" data-link-name="in body link">British Gas Energy Trust</a> suggests placing foil behind radiators to reflect heat back into the room. Since approximately 35% of indoor heat escapes through the walls, these reflectors ensure that heat is redirected into the room rather than absorbed by exterior walls, making them particularly effective on uninsulated external walls.</p>

<p class="dcr-130mj7b">As per Which?, the average cost for a boiler service ranges from £70 to £110.</p>
<p class="dcr-130mj7b">Some energy providers include this service in their annual coverage plans, such as British Gas, which features it in their <a href="https://www.britishgas.co.uk/cover/boiler-and-heating.html" data-link-name="in body link">home care</a> options starting at £19 per month. However, a boiler care plan might not be suitable for every consumer. Which? recommends considering if your monthly contributions may exceed the costs of the annual service or repairs. Ensure you have savings to cover the full service fee as needed.</p>
<p class="dcr-130mj7b">For renters, it is the landlord’s obligation to arrange for annual boiler inspections and certifications. “Annual maintenance is mandatory for all rental properties,” says Barr. "For homes with gas boilers, only a gas safety engineer should perform this work, and an Oftec certified engineer should handle oil boilers. Annual boiler maintenance guarantees that your system operates efficiently and prevents carbon monoxide leaks in your home."</p>

Electric Vehicles: Is Leasing a Used EV a Smart Way to Get One?

When Anthony Santos sought a substitute for his Audi Q3 diesel SUV, he hesitated to consider an electric vehicle.

“We thought about it, but it didn’t seem right for us,” shared Mr. Santos, a sales manager at Liverpool’s RWinvest. However, as I explored my options, the chance to lease a pre-owned electric vehicle (EV) piqued my interest.

Just a few years back, finding a used EV, let alone leasing one, was quite challenging, but that’s changing swiftly.

Currently, there are one million EVs on UK roads, with early adopters’ vehicles making their way to the second-hand market.

EVs typically depreciate faster than petrol or diesel cars, which is problematic for leasing firms, rental companies, and corporate fleet managers. However, this means consumers can access more affordable lease deals.

Used car leases in the UK surged by 166% in Q2 2025 compared to the previous year, with electric vehicles driving this growth, according to the British Vehicle Rental and Lease Association (BVRLA).

“Three years ago, leasing used EVs was minimal due to a lack of supply,” stated Tom Groot, CEO of Electric Car Scheme. Now, used EVs comprise almost half of their business, up from about 15% in 2024.

At Octopus EV, the UK’s largest energy provider, the number of used EV leases has doubled over the past year.

Additionally, leading leasing firms like Lloyds Banking Group’s Lex Auto Lease, BNP Paribas’ Arval, and independent group Zenith are now offering leases for used EVs.

New electric car prices average around £50,000, making them unaffordable for many UK residents. In response, the government initiated a subsidy scheme last summer, while the used market offers a more accessible path to electric vehicle ownership.

Santos found he could lease a lightly used Mercedes-Benz EQA without any down payment. Through his company’s electric vehicle scheme, he opted for a salary sacrifice and ended up paying £360 per month for a car typically priced at £570.

“We had no savings; the tax benefits were a game changer,” says Santos. “That’s what motivated me.”

Lease Structure

Leasing a car generally involves monthly payments over two to three years, allowing individuals to avoid a hefty upfront cost. This often includes not just the car’s cost but also road tax, breakdown assistance, service, maintenance, etc., although insurance is typically separate.

Leasing a used EV is significantly cheaper than acquiring a new one, even if it’s only a few years old and well-maintained. This opens up pricier models at more budget-friendly rates, making it easier for those on lower incomes to shrink their carbon footprint.

For example, leasing a new Skoda Enyak SUV starts at approximately £567 monthly, but for a used version, it can drop to £292 with a salary sacrifice. Volkswagen’s ID.4 SUV similarly goes from £506 to £296 monthly, representing a 42% decrease.

However, not all expenses are covered by the owner. Lessees could incur charges for damages that exceed ordinary wear and tear and may face excess mileage fees. A 10p per mile overage might seem trivial, but frequent drivers should consider the potential extra charges upon car return.

Salary Sacrifice

Top deals are often exclusive to employees in salary sacrifice programs. This arrangement allows costs to be deducted from pre-tax salaries, effectively lowering tax obligations. Savings vary by tax bracket—20% for basic rate taxpayers, 40% for higher rate taxpayers (earning between £50,271 and £125,140), and up to 45% for those with even higher incomes.

Ian Hughes, CEO of Zenith Group’s corporate and consumer business, noted that salary sacrifice significantly helps transition to electric vehicles by providing tax benefits through reduced National Insurance contributions for employers.

Salary sacrifice programs are available from a variety of employers, ranging from small businesses to major corporations like HSBC, BT, and Jet2, as well as multiple NHS Trusts. Typically, there are no costs to the employee, but the employer is liable to pay the scheme provider the equivalent of tax savings.

Employers may impose conditions, such as a minimum employment term or a base salary threshold. Additional eligibility checks ensure lessees can manage the monthly payments.

For those without access to a salary sacrifice scheme, alternatives exist. Carwow’s Leasey leasing service, for instance, provides used EVs. Gary Comerford of the EV Thoughts Podcast described his experience leasing a used EV as “very smooth”, though not perfect. While unable to test drive before signing through Car360, he had a no-questions-asked return policy within a week. He deposited £1,200 and is paying £310 monthly for his 2021 Polestar 2.

“As long as you stay within your budget, getting a rental agreement is straightforward,” Comerford noted but added concerns about tax benefits being exclusive to salary sacrifice schemes, which he felt was unfair to self-employed individuals like himself.

Extras like insurance, home chargers, and even electricity can often be bundled in with the car leasing, sometimes offering additional tax benefits via salary sacrifice.

At lease end, you’ll usually decide to extend the lease or return the vehicle, with some firms presenting a purchase option. However, be cautious—early returns often attract termination fees, though some salary sacrifice terms may waive fees if leaving due to job changes.

According to Zenith’s Hughes, leasing a used EV can greatly facilitate the transition to electric vehicles if structured properly. “It significantly lowers the entry cost from an affordability perspective,” he remarked, referring to their new used EV salary sacrifice plan that “balances taxpayer savings.”

Combatting Depreciation

Leasing companies aren’t offering these deals out of goodwill. By providing used EVs, they’re mitigating the dreaded issue of depreciation. They acquired many electric cars at inflated prices in previous years, but the overall demand drop has led to unexpected price falls.

BVRLA CEO Toby Poston indicated leasing firms now face an abundance of rapidly depreciating cars. They prefer to lease rather than sell at significant losses.

By maintaining ownership of electric vehicles, leasing firms can keep profiting. Industry experience demonstrates that EVs generally require fewer repairs compared to gasoline or diesel vehicles, thus reducing large maintenance bills over time.

Hughes anticipates that Zenith cars will likely go through two to three drivers over an eight-year period before being sold, potentially minimizing residual loss. Addressing common concerns, he emphasized that significant battery degradation is “not a significant issue” for standard vehicles, as most EVs come with an eight-year battery warranty, covering leased cars as well.

The lower likelihood of costly breakdowns makes it easier to provide leases since there’s “less risk involved,” noted Poston. At the same time, there’s “an overproduction of vehicles globally,” leading to remarkable bargains currently available.

Amazon Reveals Cause of AWS Outage That Disrupted Banks and Smart Devices

Amazon disclosed that a bug in its automation software was responsible for this week’s extensive AWS outage, which took down services like Signal and smart beds for several hours.

In a detailed summary released on Thursday, AWS explained that a series of cascading failures led to the downtime affecting thousands of sites and applications utilizing its services.

AWS reported that “due to a potential flaw in the service’s automatic DNS, customers faced issues connecting to DynamoDB, the database system where AWS clients store their data.” [domain name system] management system.”


DynamoDB manages hundreds of thousands of DNS records. It’s essential to automate system monitoring to ensure records are frequently updated, manage hardware failures, and efficiently distribute traffic as needed.

According to AWS, the root cause stemmed from an empty DNS record in the Virginia-based US-East-1 datacenter region. This issue required manual intervention for resolution, as it could not be automatically fixed.

AWS announced that it has globally disabled DynamoDB’s DNS Planner and DNS Executor automation while remedying the issues that prompted the failure, as well as implementing additional safeguards.

This outage also affected various other AWS tools.

Platforms like Signal, Snapchat, Roblox, and Duolingo, along with banking sites and services such as Ring Doorbell, were among the 2,000 businesses impacted by the outage, according to Downdetector, which recorded over 8.1 million user reports of problems globally.

Service was restored within hours, but the outage’s repercussions were widespread.

Customers of Eight Sleep—a company providing smart beds that connect to the internet for temperature and tilt control—were unable to adjust their beds or temperatures during the outage due to connectivity issues via their phone app.

The company’s CEO, Matteo Franceschetti, issued an apology. On X, he shared that they rolled out a service update allowing users to control critical bed functions via Bluetooth during such outages.

Dr. Suellet Dreyfuss, a lecturer in computing and information systems at the University of Melbourne, pointed out that this failure highlights the dependency on single points of failure within the internet infrastructure.

“It’s not solely AWS; while they are the largest cloud provider with around 30% of the market, the cloud essentially revolves around just three companies,” she explained.

“The Internet was originally designed to be resilient, allowing multiple routes to work around problems and attacks. However, we have diminished that resilience by relying heavily on a limited number of significant tech companies that not only provide data storage but also manage data services.”

As we near the threshold of the AI apocalypse, glimmers of hope remain. The technology may not always function as intended.

This was evident last week when Mark Zuckerberg attempted to showcase his company’s latest AI-powered smart glasses. “I’m not sure what to say, folks,” he told his supporters after struggling multiple times to make a video call through the glasses, which ultimately failed.

This mishap came after an ambitious start to the event at Meta Connect 2025, a developer conference held in Menlo Park, California. The keynote was set to unveil the Ray-Ban Meta Display, essentially a modern version of the wearable iPhone—ideal for those too lazy to dig their devices out of their pockets, and appealing to fans of both Buddy Holly and the Terminator. Yet, despite its alluring design, the presentation was riddled with technical blunders, perhaps serving as an ironic tribute to the latest, meaningless iterations of digital devices.

The event kicked off with quite the spectacle. Attendees watched as Zuckerberg made his way to the stage, hitting the beat while sharing numerous fist bumps along the way. The camera on the glasses displayed “Mark’s POV” for the audience, all while he undoubtedly received an avalanche of texts filled with genuine excitement: “Let’s Gooo” followed by rocket emojis, accompanied by GIFs of two guys exclaiming, “The audience is hyped,” and “It’s Time.”

Zuckerberg eventually reached the stage, clad in his trademark baggy t-shirt and tousled hair. He expressed the company’s dedication to developing attractive eyewear, all while referencing the ironic concept that technology “doesn’t interrupt” human interactions, alongside the equally ironic assertion that “serious Super Intelligence” is the cornerstone of our age. “AI must serve humanity, not just those in data centers automating our lives,” he stated.

Things seemed to flow smoothly until it was time to actually utilize the AI features. Zuckerberg attempted a video call with chef Jack Mankuso, suggesting a dish inspired by “probably Korean-style, like steak sauce.”

“What should I do first?” he asked the Oracle.

“You’ve already combined the basic ingredients,” the AI mistakenly informed him, leading to an awkward silence.

“What do I do first?” Mankuso inquired again.

“You’ve already combined the base ingredients, so grate the pears and gently mix them into the base sauce,” the AI patiently reminded him.

“I think the Wi-Fi is acting up. Sorry. Back to you, Mark.” (Certainly the fault lay with the Wi-Fi, not the AI itself.)

To his credit, Zuckerberg maintained his composure. “It’s all good. What can you do? It’s all good,” he said. “The irony is that you can spend years crafting technology, only for the Wi-Fi of the day to trip you up.”

Failing AI demonstrations are not new phenomena. They’ve become a tradition; last year at Google, a presenter attempted to use the Gemini tool to scan posters for Sabrina Carpenter’s concert to find her tour dates. The bot remained silent when asked to “Open Gemini and take a photo and ‘Check out the calendar for my availability when she visits San Francisco this year.” It eventually worked on my third attempt on another device.

This year, Google demonstrated its translation features with its own smart glasses, which failed only 15 seconds into the presentation. To be fair, a blunder in a high-stakes tech demonstration doesn’t equate to a non-functioning product, as anyone familiar with a certain Tesla CyberTruck presentation will remember. It flopped when the designer threw metal balls at the truck’s so-called “armor glass”; the incident paved the way for a bright future and earned the dubious title of “more fatal than the Ford Pinto.”

At this juncture in his presentation, one might assume Zuckerberg would play it safe. However, when it came time to demonstrate the new wristbands for the Ray-Ban Meta display, he chose to rely on live trials instead of slides.

The wristband, which he dubbed a “neural interface,” detects minimal hand gestures by picking up electrical signals from muscle activity. “You can be among others, yet still type without drawing attention,” Zuckerberg explained. In essence, the combination of glasses and wristbands is practically a stalker’s fantasy.

At least, that is, when it operates correctly. Zuckerberg repeatedly attempted to call his colleague Andrew Bosworth, but each attempt was met with failure. “What a letdown. I’m not sure what went wrong,” he said after the first unsuccessful attempt. He tried again: “I’ll pick it up with my neural band,” he quipped, but still couldn’t connect.

“I’m not sure what to tell you guys, it’s impressive, we’ll bring Boz out here and move to the next presentation and hope it works.” The sign at the back of the room that appeared on-screen read, “Live Demo – Good Luck.”

If the aim was to humanize Zuckerberg, it indeed succeeded: he put forth his best effort in the face of disasters and smiled through it all, making it easy to forget the childlike wonder.


However, the overall event felt like a misaligned millennial dream, a bizarre echo of early 2000s optimism that only Silicon Valley billionaires could buy into. The spectacle mirrored Steve Jobs’ iPhone unveiling in 2007, with two key contrasts: back then, the U.S. hadn’t crumbled behind the scenes—not yet—and it was clear why people were eager to see the devices’ launch. They were on the internet! In your pocket! Can you believe this incredible human innovation?

This event is mired in hardware and software that seems to function without them, with many AI pushes hoping to harness the same energy remotely and without comparable offerings.

For amateurs, it appears consumer technology has entered an era of solutions searching for problems. Witnessing our high-tech overlords stumble on stage raises a broader question: Is that not the case?

Introducing the Smart Pill: Enabling Doctors to Examine and Treat Your Intestines Internally.

Emerging technologies enable doctors to leverage microorganisms for diagnosing and treating diseases through gut microbiota. Recent studies highlight these advancements.

Researchers successfully used smartphone apps to genetically alter bacteria, causing them to emit light signals in response.

If proven safe and effective in humans, this treatment could address several illnesses that are currently challenging to manage.

This method encompassed three key elements: bacteria, technology, and pigs. Under the guidance of senior author Hanzi Wang from Tianjin University in China, scientists modified E. coli bacteria to react to specific chemical and optical stimuli.

They created swallowable capsules controlled via Bluetooth that communicate with these photoresponsive bacteria, targeting pigs afflicted with colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease that results in intestinal swelling.

The experiment has commenced, allowing scientists to introduce engineered E. coli into the inflamed intestines of pigs through these capsules.

Nitrates, which the body produces during intestinal inflammation, serve as indicators of active colitis. When the modified E. coli come into contact with nitrates, they illuminate.

These smart capsules can detect the optical signal, alerting researchers to the presence of E. coli via Bluetooth.

Through a smartphone app, researchers can command the capsule to start emitting light signals, prompting the E. coli to release anti-inflammatory antibodies to combat colitis.

This innovative approach enables scientists to effectively communicate with the bacteria, ensuring targeted treatment delivery.

“This represents a remarkable technological advancement,” stated Dr. Lindsey Edwards, a senior lecturer in Microbiology at King’s College London, as reported by BBC Science Focus. Dr. Edwards was not involved in the research.

“Methods like this enable precise, real-time interactions with gut bacteria and have the potential to revolutionize treatment,” she added.

“There is an urgent need for new tools that allow us to harness the full potential of our microbiota to enhance health and better understand and manage microbial infections.”

At present, colitis has no existing treatments, and options are scarce. Dr. Edwards believes that such future methods could “open new pathways” for treating not only inflammatory bowel disease but also other gut-related conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and chronic fatigue.

However, Dr. Alexandre Almeida, from the Department of Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge University and not part of this research, warns that this possibility is still distant.

“This is still a preliminary proof-of-concept study,” he noted. “The technology has only been tested in animals and specifically for detecting certain conditions.”

“Before human applications, we must evaluate the safety of this technology and address significant questions, such as how these engineered microorganisms influence the natural balance of other gut bacteria.”

Dr. Nicholas Ilott, a senior researcher at the Oxford Microbiome Research Center who did not participate in the study, stated that the technology is “incredibly exciting” and could prove to be “very valuable” in future medical treatments.

The UK’s Intelligence Commission (ICO) has urged manufacturers of air fryers, smart speakers, fertility trackers, and smart TVs to prioritize the privacy rights of individuals.

Many individuals feel overwhelmed by the lack of control over how data is gathered, utilized, and shared regarding their homes and personal lives.

Following concerns raised about an air fryer that reportedly listens to its environment, Public concerns have emerged about digital devices collecting an excessive amount of personal data, prompting data protection regulators to issue initial guidelines on the handling of personal information.


Manufacturers and data handlers are now required to ensure data security, maintain transparency with consumers, and routinely delete collected information.

“We are pleased to share our commitment to offering a diverse range of services to our clients,” stated Stephen Almond, executive director of ICO’s regulatory risks.

“These products are meant to enhance our lives, but that doesn’t imply they should collect unnecessary data… Users shouldn’t have to sacrifice their privacy to enjoy the advantages of smart devices.”

“Everyone expects a degree of privacy within their own homes, thus we need to trust that smart products will honor that privacy, act responsibly, and utilize information only as anticipated.”

The new guidance points out various devices classified as part of the “Internet of Things,” which collect data that must be managed with care. These items include smart fertility trackers that log user periods and temperature readings, transmitting that data back to manufacturer servers to determine fertile days.

Smart speakers should not only listen to their owners but also to other family members and visitors; they must be designed to empower users to adjust settings to minimize personal data collection.

Smart Devices Can Accurately Measure Breastfed Babies’ Intake

Parents may soon be able to monitor how much breast milk their baby consumes through devices that provide real-time notifications to their smartphones.

“The anxiety surrounding breastfeeding often stems from the uncertainty about how much milk a baby is receiving,” explains Daniel Robinson from Northwestern University, Illinois. “This can heighten stress for nursing mothers, parents, and healthcare professionals.” Insufficient nutrition can lead to slower weight gain in infants and, in severe cases, dehydration.

Clinicians typically evaluate breastfeeding effectiveness by comparing weights before and after feeds and monitoring diaper changes. However, these methods are somewhat cumbersome and imprecise, according to Robinson.

To create a more precise measurement system, he and his team engineered a device featuring four electrodes, each 4 cm wide, that attach to the breast away from the nipple. Two electrodes transmit a very low electrical current across the breast, while the other pair receives it.

This device relays recordings to a smartphone app, leveraging the weaker electrical signals produced as milk is released, enabling real-time calculations of milk volume, Robinson shares.

Researchers tested this system with breastfeeding mothers who expressed milk into a bottle for approximately 15 minutes. The device’s average milk collection was within 2 ml of the actual amount, as each participant expressed about 50 ml.

This innovation could allow parents to monitor their baby’s nutrition more effectively, potentially leading to timely adjustments such as supplementing with formula under medical guidance, Robinson notes.

In another trial, a woman used the device while nursing, and the app reported that her baby consumed 24 ml of milk. This closely matched the 20 ml estimation derived from traditional weight measurements taken before and after feeding, Robinson notes.

“A prevalent reason many mothers discontinue breastfeeding is the belief that their milk supply is inadequate, making this technology crucial for determining its accuracy,” states Mary Fewtrell from University College London.

However, to ensure the credibility of this device, further research is necessary to understand any potential impacts on milk production, long-term side effects, and whether parents find it desirable, observes Amy Brown from Swansea University, UK.

Even without an additional subwoofer or rear speakers, it impressively delivers substantial sound.

However, it struggles to produce deep, rich bass, and while the sound has impressive width, virtual surround effects are limited, necessitating more complex systems with additional speakers to achieve this.

The TV also features night mode, audio enhancement, and bass boost settings. The night mode is especially handy for lowering loud sounds while ensuring dialogue remains comprehensible, making it ideal for late-night screenings without disturbing others.

Review of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: A Smart, Fascist-Fighting Open World Adventure Game

MToday, creating an Indiana Jones game may appear straightforward. Just take Uncharted’s Nathan Drake, transport him back in time about 80 years, give him a fedora and a whip, and witness the emergence of the golden idol. Dog mastered the formula for indie-inspired, globe-trotting action games over a decade ago. It would be understandable if Swedish studio MachineGames followed this same template.

However, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle chooses a different path. They intentionally avoid inviting such comparisons. This unconventional blockbuster shares more similarities with games like Dishonored and Hitman rather than Uncharted. While there are action and spectacle moments, along with some platforming, the focus lies more on puzzles, free-form stealth, and battling fascist enemies while disguised as a priest.

Set in 1937 between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, The Great Circle follows Indy as he investigates a cult infiltrating Marshall College and stealing valuable artifacts. Pursued by giants from this cult after stealing a cat, Indy embarks on a journey to various historical sites globally.

His first destination is Vatican City, setting the tone for the subsequent adventures. Vatican City serves as a vast, maze-like sandbox where players can freely explore at their own pace, carefully navigating around fascist threats. With various puzzle-solving elements and exciting discoveries, players get to immerse themselves in the thrill of uncovering ancient secrets while outsmarting enemy patrols.

Vatican City offers a diverse range of challenges and hidden areas to explore, setting a high standard that makes subsequent locations like the Pyramids of Giza seem more traditional in comparison. The transition to open-world exploration in later parts of the game allows for more experimentation with Indy’s abilities.

With encounters against various foes like Blackshirts and the Wehrmacht, The Great Circle captures the spontaneous action reminiscent of a Spielberg film. While combat is an option, stealth remains a preferred method, with a variety of tools at your disposal for defeating enemies. The game’s combat and stealth mechanics offer a dynamic and engaging experience amidst tomb raids and cinematic storytelling.

Despite its strong points, The Great Circle occasionally lacks the urgency expected in an Indiana Jones adventure, with pacing inconsistencies in certain acts. Nevertheless, the game picks up momentum later on, leading to a satisfying conclusion that encapsulates the essence of Spielberg’s filmography.

Resisting the Push for “Smart” Devices in My Home: A Tech Journalist’s Battle by Victoria Turk

TThis is one of the battles my husband and I have been fighting ever since we started living together. It’s about whether or not you want to include “smart” appliances in your home. An avid gadget fan, he happily connected all his household items to the internet so he could control them from his mobile phone. As a jaded technology journalist, I’m far too paranoid to have data-hungry surveillance machines around me.

So when I saw a recent article about a seemingly innocuous tool that apparently requires a little too much data, I felt somewhat vindicated. Consumer group “Which one?’ The company found that three of the air fryers it tested were connected to a phone app that requested permission to record audio. This is unlikely to be an important feature for an object whose sole purpose is to cook food. The device also wanted to know the exact location of the user.

To me, there’s no need to connect your air fryer, refrigerator, washing machine, or toaster to the internet, but I can see some merit to the concept. The main advantage of smart home appliances is that they can be controlled remotely. So you can finish a big load of laundry as soon as you get home from work, or check for missing groceries while you’re at the supermarket. However, many of these devices and the apps connected to them collect high levels of personal information with little transparency, despite regulations limiting the data they process.

As more and more things become “smart”, it becomes difficult to resist. My husband managed to sneak a color-changing light bulb into the house with an app, but I drew the line at Ring doorbell. I felt it was excessive to equip the door furniture with eyes and ears.

But in reality, you don’t have to completely avoid smart appliances just to protect your privacy. Despite my groaning, I actually like technology. We all want to use smart devices that make our lives easier without giving up a lot of personal data. In theory, regulations already cover this.

Introducing EBCare: A Revolutionary Smart Mask for Monitoring Metabolic and Respiratory Health

Recent respiratory disease epidemics have attracted a lot of attention, yet most respiratory monitoring is limited to physical signals. Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is packed with rich molecular information that can reveal various insights into an individual's health. Now, Professor Wei Gao and colleagues at California Institute of Technology have developed EBCare, a mask-based device that monitors EBC biomarkers in real time. For example, the EBCare mask can monitor asthma patients for their levels of nitrite, a chemical that indicates airway inflammation.

“Monitoring a patient's breathing is routinely done, for example to assess asthma and other respiratory diseases,” Prof Gao said.

“However, this method requires patients to visit a clinic to have a sample taken and then wait for the test results.”

“Since COVID-19, people have started wearing masks. We can leverage this increased use of masks for remote, personalized monitoring to get real-time feedback on one's health from the comfort of one's own home or office.”

“For example, we could use this information to evaluate how effective a medical treatment is.”

To selectively analyze the chemicals and molecules in your breath, you first need to cool them down and condense them into a liquid.

In a clinical setting, this cooling step is separate from the analysis: Moistbreath samples are cooled in a bucket of ice or a large refrigerated cooler.

The EBCare mask, on the other hand, is self-cooling, according to the team.

The breath is cooled by a passive cooling system that integrates hydrogel evaporative cooling and radiative cooling to effectively cool the breath on the facemask.

“This mask represents a new paradigm for respiratory and metabolic disease management and precision medicine because wearing it daily allows for easy collection of breath samples and real-time analysis of exhaled chemical molecules,” said Wen-zheng Heng, a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology.

“Breath condensate contains soluble gases as well as non-volatile substances in the form of aerosols and droplets, including metabolic products, inflammatory indicators and pathogens.”

Once the breath is converted into liquid, a series of capillaries in a device called bioinspired microfluidics immediately transports the liquid to a sensor for analysis.

“We learned how to transport water from plants, which use capillary action to pull water up from the ground,” Professor Gao said.

“The analysis results are then sent wirelessly to an individual's phone, tablet or computer.”

“The smart mask can be prepared at a relatively low cost. The materials are designed to cost just $1.”

To test the masks, the authors conducted a series of human studies, focusing primarily on patients with asthma or COPD.

The researchers specifically monitored the patients' breath for nitrite, a biomarker of inflammation in both diseases.

Results showed that the masks accurately detected biomarkers indicative of inflammation in patients' airways.

In a separate experiment, the masks demonstrated that they could accurately detect subjects' blood alcohol levels, suggesting that they could potentially be used for field DUI checks and other alcohol consumption monitoring.

We also explored how the mask can be used to assess blood urea levels in the monitoring and management of kidney disease.

As kidney function declines, by-products of protein metabolism, such as urea, accumulate in the blood.

At the same time, the amount of urea in saliva increases, which breaks down into ammonia gas, leading to high ammonium concentrations in the breath condensate.

The study showed that the smart mask could accurately detect ammonium levels, closely reflecting the urea concentration in blood.

“Our smart mask platform for EBC collection and analysis represents a major advancement in the potential for real-time monitoring of lung health,” said Professor Harry Rossiter, director of the Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

“This concept, with the potential to add biosensors for a wide range of compounds in the future, highlights the groundbreaking potential of smart masks in health monitoring and diagnostics.”

Researchers now claim they have created a smart fiber that can achieve just that, without the need for a battery pack.

A team of Chinese researchers have developed textile-based electronics that utilize the human body as part of a circuit to harness electromagnetic energy from the environment.

This innovation could pave the way for a “body-bound” fiber electronics technology that functions without electronic chips or batteries and could be applied in various scenarios.

Co-author Chengyi Hou from Donghua University in Shanghai explained, “When electromagnetic energy passes through a fiber, it is converted into different forms of energy, including visible light or radio waves. Therefore, the fiber not only emits light but also produces an electrical signal when in contact with the human body.”

Hou highlighted that these radio signals are programmable by manipulating different aspects of the system, such as the fiber’s contact area with the body and its diameter.

The team stated that this method resolves a major challenge in integrating electronic systems into textiles, which is the necessity of rigid components.

Hou mentioned, “We have successfully achieved mass production of this new type of fiber electronics, which is as thin and soft as traditional fibers. The next step is to implement it.”

The team has created prototypes like a wearable cloth display with a cloth keyboard, intended for individuals with hearing impairments to aid in communication, as well as textile controllers for gaming.

Additionally, they developed a wireless tactile carpet that illuminates underfoot, providing emergency lighting at night and wirelessly transmitting signals to control household devices like lights.

App-Connected Smart Hat Detects Signal Changes and Sends Notifications

Flexible, wear-resistant strands of conductive fibers are used to make smart clothing with embedded computers and sensors, such as hats that can sense changes in signals.

Previous efforts to create fibers with wear-resistant coatings and conductive cores have encountered problems. When materials cool and shrink at different rates during manufacturing, or are twisted and cleaned once in the final product, small stress cracks can develop and often cause smart devices to stop working.

now, Rayway Researchers at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University have discovered a conductive material that shrinks on cooling and does not develop stress cracks, similar to the aluminosilicate glass used in smartphone screens. The material borrows techniques from fiber-optic cable manufacturing, and the process is cheap and “industry-ready,” Wei said.

The technique involves placing a semiconductor wire made of silicon or germanium into molten glass at a temperature of about 1000 degrees Celsius and drawing it into thin strands. The glass is later etched away with hydrofluoric acid and replaced with a polymer coating that allows for a more flexible material. Fibers can stretch up to 10 kilometers.

A small amount of this fiber is then woven into fabric using a standard loom and regular cotton. Wei says the new material alone feels like “fishing line” on the skin, so cotton is needed to make the clothes comfortable.

The researchers used the fibers to create several prototypes, including electronic sensors and chips that communicate through conductive materials, such as a hat that detects changes in the color of traffic lights. It then passes that information to a smartphone app, a jumper that can receive and decode images sent by pulses of light rather than radio waves, and a watch strap that measures the wearer's heart rate.

In a six-month test where the garment was worn, washed and dried, the fibers were durable and continued to conduct electricity.

However, there are still weaknesses. The link between the flexible material and the rigid circuit board that holds computer chips and other components tends to fail after a few months, causing smart features to stop working.

“The only part that consistently leads to test failures is the connection between the fiber and the external circuitry,” Wei says. “The challenge now is to find a stable connection method.”
