Neanderthal-Human Hybrids Likely Experienced Genetic Incompatibilities

Although modern humans are thought to have driven Neanderthals extinct, it was not simply through conflict or violence. New research indicates that the genetic incompatibility from interbreeding between the two species may have led to increased chances of pregnancy failure in hybrid mothers. This genetic mismatch could also provide insights into some contemporary pregnancy failures.

Studies in genetics reveal that there was ongoing interbreeding between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals around 50,000 to 45,000 years ago. While Neanderthals became extinct approximately 41,000 years ago, remnants of their DNA endure in modern humans of non-African ancestry, accounting for about 1 to 2 percent of their genetic makeup.

Interestingly, no mitochondrial DNA from Neanderthals is found in modern humans. Mitochondrial DNA is inherited exclusively from the mother, as it is carried only in the egg cell, not in sperm.

Patrick Eppenberger and his team at the University of Zurich in Switzerland propose a possible reason for this phenomenon. They suggest that mothers with Neanderthal and Homo sapiens ancestry faced a higher probability of pregnancy loss due to genetic mismatches between their genes and those of the developing fetus.

Variations of the gene Piezo 1, crucial for oxygen transport in the bloodstream, existed among Neanderthals and Homo sapiens. The researchers conducted analyses on DNA from both groups and constructed models of how the PIEZO1 protein interacted based on these differences. They also experimented with human red blood cells in laboratory settings, simulating effects caused by Neanderthal genes.

The findings revealed that the Neanderthal variant V1 of red blood cells exhibited a stronger binding affinity for oxygen compared to the V2 variant of Homo sapiens. The dominance of V1 implies that individuals inheriting both V1 and V2 would have red blood cells highly efficient at oxygen transport.

This suggests that a fetus conceived from a Neanderthal and a Homo sapiens mother could have been healthy, but complications might have arisen in the subsequent generations. A hybrid mother carrying a fetus with two copies of V2 would struggle to deliver sufficient oxygen through the placenta, potentially stunting fetal development and heightening miscarriage risks.

In their study, Eppenberger and colleagues assert that such incompatibilities could have led to lower fertility rates among Neanderthals. They wrote, “Over thousands of years of cohabitation, even minimal gene flow from modern humans into Neanderthal populations may have gradually introduced reproductive disadvantages that intensified over generations.”

This situation was likely less problematic for Homo sapiens, as their population numbers were significantly greater. Even though Neanderthal DNA could likely integrate through paternal lines, V1 variants would be swiftly purged by natural selection. This could clarify why Neanderthal nuclear DNA has persisted in some humans, while their mitochondrial DNA has not.

Researchers also pointed out that, while modern human mitochondrial DNA does not come from Neanderthals, instances of similar mutations in the Piezo 1 gene can still result in unexplained miscarriages today due to gene incompatibilities between mothers and fetuses.

Sally Wassef from the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, remarked that the newfound understanding of second-generation incompatibilities offers valuable insights. “Even minor reproductive disadvantages can lead small populations below their replacement levels, triggering declines and potentially leading to extinction in vulnerable environments,” she notes.

“However, I view this finding as merely one piece of a larger puzzle,” she adds. “While its impacts are subtle, there are likely other ecological and social factors at play.”

Laurits Skov at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark shared that multiple elements likely contributed to the extinction of Neanderthals, including climate change, the emergence of modern humans, small Neanderthal populations, new disease introductions, and genetic incompatibility.

Skov further expressed skepticism about the notion that this disparity in oxygen affinity stems from a singular mutation within the Piezo 1 gene, as proposed by the researchers.

“Further research is essential to accurately evaluate the implications of this mutation and the effects of differing maternal and fetal gene profiles,” he emphasizes, “as well as to determine its potential role in Neanderthal extinction.”

I Experienced a Robot Massage and Survived to Share My Tale | Here’s What Happened

I found myself in a softly illuminated room, making my way to the table. The beat of “Mamushi” by Megan Thee Stallion filled the air, while two large white circles moved rhythmically along the silhouette of my body displayed on the screen.

Is this an exclusive sex club in Germany at 2 AM?

Unfortunately, no. I’m actually in a suburban shopping center on a Tuesday afternoon, experiencing a massage from an Aescape robot.

Aescape lets me explain, is a “groundbreaking lifestyle robot company” that “transforms the wellness sector by delivering outstanding massage experiences.” To put it simply, they provide robot massages: a cushioned table paired with two large robotic arms that knead your body according to your preferences and a preset program.

I absolutely love massages—there’s nothing that makes me happier than having the sack of flesh I call a body manipulated like Wagyu beef. So, I opted for the “power-up” option for 30 minutes, which costs $60 and promises to make you feel “good and alert.”


According to Mayo Clinic Health System, massage therapy can benefit numerous conditions including anxiety, depression, sports injuries, digestive issues, headaches, and soft tissue sprains. It also enhances circulation, boosts the immune system, reduces stress, and increases energy levels.

But can a robotic massage compare to one delivered by a human?

“There are many gimmicks out there. My mother owns a massage chair, and I use a Theragun at home,” explains Christa de La Garza, a board-certified massage therapist from Colorado. While these devices can be beneficial, Della Garza believes there’s no cause for concern about robots taking over.

Primarily, there are tangible physical advantages to interacting with humans. During the early days of the pandemic, many felt “skin hungry,” a term reflecting a need for physical touch that comes from prolonged isolation.

A paper published in 2024 in Nature, indicated that receiving touch is “very significant,” revealing that touch interventions help alleviate pain, depression, and anxiety in adults. The study found that while touch from objects and robots could provide physical benefits, the mental health advantages were minimal.

“Receiving safe and therapeutic touch is incredibly powerful,” shared Della Garza.

Aescape clarifies on their website that they do not intend to replace therapists but rather to complement their services and address workforce shortages in the industry.

Upon my arrival, the efficient, blonde receptionist assured me, “Humans can’t be replaced.” Although I was late due to parking complications, the machine didn’t seem to mind. It felt like a typical spa, complete with nail polish, pedicures, and crystals for sale at the front desk. As we walked to the robot room, she mentioned that Aescape is quite popular, especially among clients who “are uneasy about being touched by strangers.”

Once inside, she provided me with high-compression, Aescape-branded leggings and top to wear. As my treatment began, I learned these garments help improve the machines’ “body detection.” Lying on the table, I remained very still as the Aescape robot scanned my shape. The staff explained the screen controls and an emergency button to halt the process if needed.

Once I was facing the screen, I was greeted with a variety of options. What kind of music would I prefer? Choices included a playlist named lo-fi ambient jazz, classic rock, or “brat.” I could also see clear outlines revealing my body’s quirks—did they have to outline my saddlebags so distinctly?—or watch calming videos of the ocean, snowy mountains, or rainy forests. The headrest could be adjusted for different pressure settings on the machine.

One of Della Garza’s concerns about robotic massages is the potential for overthinking. With a human therapist, you tend to surrender more, as they steer the majority of the experience, allowing you to switch off your mind.

I, however, was distracted by the temptation to fine-tune the music and visuals. Did I want to see the snow? It was okay. Was a “Brat” playlist relaxing? Nope—back to ambient lo-fi. Is that really what my body looks like? This is unsettling.

Several friends expressed concern that a robotic massage might make me anxious. What if the powerful robotic arms tore through my muscles like a pile of deli meat? Conversely, my greater worry was that the massage wouldn’t be firm enough, leaving my tension knots intact.

Nevertheless, the massage proved enjoyable. The robot’s smooth plastic hands felt pleasantly warm. While they lack the finesse and precision of human touch, they provide a rather fun experience. In fact, the robot hands resemble knobby shapes, much like small Dutch clogs, with a firm push against the back.

By the end of the session, I felt significantly more relaxed than when I began. Although I wasn’t exactly elated, I sensed that I could comfortably drift into a deep, dreamless sleep.

While it certainly can’t replace the human touch, I appreciate the surrender and attention to detail a traditional massage provides. Additionally, Aescape doesn’t address the head, hands, or feet. But if you’re feeling sore after a workout or find yourself walking around a suburban shopping center for a duration, I could see it as a viable option. It’s relatively affordable, and there’s no need to tip.

The Earth recorded an unprecedented number of hazardous hot and humid days in 2024, as climate change escalates global humidity to alarming levels.

The readings indicate temperatures lower than in a dry bulb, as high humidity limits the cooling effect of evaporation and brings the wet bulb temperature closer to that of dry air.

As the globe heats up, the atmosphere can retain more moisture, leading to increased heavy rainfall, storms, and higher humidity levels. Willett describes 2024 as “exceptionally” humid, second only to 2023 due to higher moisture levels.

Specific regions, including the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and East China, have reached 31°C (88°F) within a short time span, with wet bulb temperatures exceeding 84°F multiple times, according to the report. At these levels, extended exposure outdoors is deemed extremely perilous and potentially lethal.

Traditionally, scientists consider a wet bulb temperature of 35°C the threshold for human survival, as people cannot withstand outdoor conditions for more than a few hours before succumbing. However, research published in 2022 suggests that the actual limit may be lower, around 31°C. “Over 30°C, your body really struggles,” Willett explains.

Research: Squid Evolved 100 Million Years Ago and Experienced Rapid Radiation

Paleontologists have adopted a cutting-edge digital fossil mining technique to examine over 250 fossil beaks from 40 ancient squid species. The findings indicate that there is no prolonged slow-moving change associated with the slower parietal layer, previously linked to the mass extinction event of late white matter around 66 million years ago. Early squid species had already established large populations, surpassing the biomass of both ammonites and fish. They evolved into intelligent and agile swimmers, contributing to modern marine ecosystems.

Squid are recognized as the most diverse and widely distributed group of marine cephalopods in today’s oceans, serving a crucial role in marine ecosystems as both predators and prey.

Their evolutionary success is generally attributed to the loss of a rigid external shell, a significant characteristic of their parietal ancestors.

Yet, their evolutionary beginnings remain unclear due to the scarcity of fossils from soft-bodied organisms.

The fossil record for squid dates back around 45 million years, with most specimens discovered consisting of fossilized statoris, or small calcium carbonites that assist in balance.

The early absence of such fossils has led to hypotheses that squid diversified following the mass extinctions during the Cretaceous period, approximately 66 million years ago.

Molecular studies of living squid species provide estimates regarding their divergence times; however, these estimates have become increasingly uncertain because of the dearth of prior fossil evidence.

In this recent study, Shin Ikegami, a paleontologist from Hokkaido University, and colleagues addressed these deficiencies using high-resolution grinding tomography and advanced image processing to digitally scan rocks as layered cross-sectional images, effectively revealing hidden 3D models.

This method was applied to Cretaceous carbonate rocks in Japan, resulting in the discovery of 263 fossilized squid beaks from 40 species across 23 genera and five families.

Results indicate that squid emerged around the boundaries of the early and late Cretaceous, roughly 100 million years ago, followed by a rapid diversification.

The authors assert that this newly uncovered fossil record significantly extends the documented origins of the two main squid groups: oegopsida extending back about 15 million years and myopsida extending as far back as 55 million years.

Early oegopsids showcased unique anatomical features that later species lacked, hinting at rapid morphological evolution, whereas Myopsids already displayed modern characteristics.

This study further indicates that late Cretaceous squids were more populous and often larger than their contemporaneous ammonite and bony fish counterparts. This ecological dominance might have triggered the radiation of bony fish and marine mammals roughly 30 million years ago, establishing squid as the first intelligent and agile swimmers that shaped modern marine ecosystems.

“In terms of population and size, these ancient squids were evidently proliferating across the oceans,” stated Dr. Ikenakamoto.

“Their body size rivaled that of fish, often even surpassing the ammonites found alongside them.”

“This demonstrates that squid thrived as the most abundant swimmers in the ancient seas.”

“These discoveries revolutionize our understanding of marine ecosystems in the past,” remarked Dr. Yasuhiro Iba from Hokkaido University.

“Squids were likely the pioneers of fast, intelligent swimmers that dominated the modern ocean.”

Scientists Report Seaweed in the Caribbean and Surrounding Areas Experienced a Collision in May

It can block sunlight essential for coral reefs and seagrasses, and when the algae sink, they may suffocate these ecosystems. Once washed ashore, the organisms that inhabit the algae either perish or are scavenged by birds, according to Burns.

The massive piles of odorous seaweed pose a significant challenge for the Caribbean, especially since tourism is a vital economic driver for many small islands.

“It’s a hurdle, but it hasn’t impacted every corner of the Caribbean,” said Frank Comitto, a special advisor to the Caribbean Hotels and Tourism Association.

At a popular tourist destination in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, officials have invested in barriers to keep Sargassum from reaching the beaches, he noted.

In St. Maarten’s Dutch Caribbean territory, teams equipped with backhoes were mobilized for an emergency cleanup after residents reported a strong ammonia and hydrogen sulfide odor.

“The smell is quite unpleasant,” Burns stated.

Meanwhile, in the French Caribbean, officials plan to quickly utilize storage barges and specialized vessels capable of collecting several tons of seaweed daily.

Sargassum “will harm our coastlines, hinder swimming, and create unbearable living conditions for local residents,” French Prime Minister François Beilou recently informed the press.

However, Comitto mentioned that employing such vessels is “very costly” and not widely accepted, while an alternative method (using heavy machinery) is labor-intensive.

“We must tread carefully, as sea turtle eggs might be affected,” he advised. “You can’t just go there and bulldoze everything away.”

As some Caribbean islands face financial challenges, most cleanup efforts fall to hotels, with certain guests receiving refunds and complimentary shuttles to unaffected beaches.

Each year, the volume of Sargassum increases at the end of spring, peaks during summer, and then starts to decline in late autumn or early winter, noted Burns.

The recent record levels remain relatively stationary. Experts are hopeful for more Sargassum in June.

SpaceX reveals Starship spacecraft experienced rupture during flight, footage of debris circulating online

SpaceX announced Thursday that its Starship spacecraft was damaged during a flight meant to test the capabilities of its giant rocket.

The upper stage of the rocket system appears to have disintegrated somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico or possibly the Caribbean Sea. Shortly after SpaceX announced it had lost contact with the spacecraft, a video showing debris flying through the sky surfaced on social media.

“However, our study reveals a pattern of steady, incremental ‘software updates’ occurring within each species over millions of years.”

This study challenges the traditional notion that certain species, such as Neanderthals, remained unchanged and were unable to adapt, suggesting instead that the increase in brain size was a gradual and continuous driving force in evolution. It underscores the significance of changes.

“Major evolutionary shifts do not always require dramatic events,” Pushel stated.

“They can result from making small incremental improvements over time, akin to the learning and adaptation processes observed today.”

The researchers also identified a notable pattern: larger-bodied species tend to have larger brains, but the variation observed within individual species does not consistently correlate with body size.

Hence, the evolution of brain size over long evolutionary timescales spanning millions of years has been influenced by factors distinct from those observed within individual species, underscoring the complexities of evolutionary pressures on brain size. It’s remarkable.

New research indicates that early Mars experienced both tectonic and volcanic activity.
