<p>Despite the challenges posed by world wars and the looming threat of nuclear annihilation, this period was marked by a steady increase in prosperity, security, and mobility—a liberating experience that reinforced our belief in human progress. With each generation, the prospects seemed to improve, making life better for my family.</p>

<p>However, that trajectory of improvement seems to have halted with my children, signifying not just the end of a dream, but the reality of a shared illusion collapsing.</p>

<p>The world I was born into is starkly different from the one I will leave for my grandchildren. They will not inherit the same sense of security that I had. This is a deeply troubling fact for me.</p>

<p>The reasons behind this decline in prospects are well-documented. The world suffers due to the energy practices we adopted to fuel prosperity. The advancement we once praised came with the cost of exploitation and environmental degradation, with progress often built on a bed of destruction.</p>

<p>Currently, our planet is already 1.5 degrees warmer since my grandparents’ time. If we continue on our current path, we risk doubling that temperature increase. A world as hot as ours is already chaotic, threatening ecosystems and the myriad species that depend on them. We must prevent the catastrophic scenario of the planet heating another 1.5 degrees, as this will render many regions nearly uninhabitable, resulting in the tragic loss of millions of lives and dire conditions for billions.</p>

<p>Among the many affected will be my descendants, which deeply resonates with me—the thought that the comfort and freedom I enjoyed were attained at the expense of their suffering is unbearable. <em>Juice</em> This is a nightmare for my family.</p>

<p>While there may be parts of our world where the reality of climate change can be evaded, Australia is not one of those places.</p>

<p>When queried about why I chose to publish a dystopian novel at this point in my career, my irritation is tempered. They wonder why I shifted genres; in truth, I haven't changed directions—rather, the world around me has. The real question is, why should I not write about this moment in history? What kind of artist would I be if I ignored the pressing issues of our times?</p>

<p>A dystopian narrative? You may call it that, but it suggests something fantastical or exaggerated, which I do not perceive. The millions already enduring dystopian realities would disagree—across the globe, individuals face hunger and displacement due to conflict and extreme weather. The horrors they encounter are often remnants of fossil fuel capitalism. Sometimes, the term ‘dystopia’ serves as an opiate, a term that buffers us and distances us from reality. I believe we can no longer afford such distance.</p>

<p>The story unfolds in northwest Australia, generations into the future. The collective efforts made to circumvent the worst impacts of climate change seem futile, leaving us trapped in a cycle of increasing temperatures by 3°C or more. The nation-state structure has eroded, and communities have retreated from equatorial zones, with those remaining in this climate often forced to seek refuge underground for extended periods annually. Thus, the adaptation has become a daunting yet necessary skill.</p>

<p>Much like my previous works, this narrative revolves around family—exploring themes of loyalty, freedom, geography, and history. It's an examination of what it means to endure in an increasingly hostile environment. Although speculative, its nature is not solely scientific or climatic; it is also moral and profoundly personal. I felt compelled to envision the future my grandchildren's children might face, set in a landscape I cherish and have defended throughout my life.</p>

<p>For me, this narrative extends logically, emotionally, and imaginatively from the world I inhabit. Enhanced by scientific insights and climate modeling, it mirrors my experiences in a region historically known for its climatic extremes, now facing the brink of uninhabitability.</p>

<p><em>Juice</em> presents a stark reality—a resilient populace grappling with harsh conditions. Out of tradition and determination, they cling to what remains inhabitably viable. However, as conditions worsen, families are compelled to migrate to safer, cooler regions.</p>

<p>This is not mere speculation; it is already occurring in northern Australia. The most vulnerable citizens, much like the Oakies from Steinbeck's narratives, make these transitions. The dial merely needs to shift slightly.</p>

<p>Yet, the foremost struggle my characters encounter is not purely one of climate but of humanity. As the protagonist learns, the most precious resource is not shelter, food, or water, but civility. This is the essence of the narrative.</p>

<p>What sustains life is a shared commitment to the common good. The forces of fossil capitalism thrive on the dispensation of that ethic. To survive, my character must revive and cherish it. We must embrace that ethos as well. Ultimately, whether this is feasible lies in the realm of speculation.</p>

However, the book featuring the finalists for the Royal Society’s Trivite Science Award proves this perception wrong and showcases the judges’ selection for this year: Our Brains, Ourselves by neurologist Masd Hussain.

I was fortunate to serve as a panel chair among six dedicated readers and book enthusiasts, including New Scientist‘s Jacob Aron, who faced the daunting challenge of curating a list of nominees. Our discussions, led by passionate advocates for science, were diverse and engaging, reflecting the love we all share for both literature and science.

We frequently engaged in respectful debates, as I was usually in the company of individuals willing to consider opposing viewpoints. Our varied backgrounds and experiences enriched our understanding of the privileges associated with reading and the act of reading itself.

The scientific elements are firmly grounded in Hussain’s own research, presented in an easily digestible manner, while acknowledging the unknowns. I appreciate this transparency; real science encourages the pursuit of further questions.

While case studies in clinical practices might seem commonplace, the unique personal touch here makes a significant difference. Have you ever felt a disconnect from personal attributes? The narratives of patients with brain disorders provoke thought regarding identity, selfhood, and our social roles.

This notion resonated strongly with our panel. What constitutes belonging? Some individuals encountered in the book are members of immigrant communities, facing prejudice and violence to carve out their place in society. It would seem that as our world becomes increasingly interconnected, our fear of differences should diminish—but this isn’t always the case.

The Royal Society Urges Elon Musk to Reflect on His Science Fellowship Resignation

The Royal Society suggested to Elon Musk that he might consider resigning from his fellowship if he believed it wouldn’t assist in addressing an attack on research from the Trump administration, according to the Guardian.

The owner of X, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, was elected as a member in 2018 due to the UK’s National Academy of Sciences’ contributions to the space and electric vehicle sectors.

In an email sent to the Fellowship, Sir Adrian Smith, the current president of the Royal Society, disclosed that on March 19, he first communicated with Nurse about the “wide range of damages” inflicted on American science by the Trump administration and urged for “action to reverse this tragedy.”

“Paul did not receive any responses to this communication or the follow-up reminders,” Smith stated.

On May 20, the nurse sent a letter outlining concerns shared with him by U.S. scientists, noting that “some of the proposed budget cuts seemed pointless.”

Smith mentioned: “In his letter of distress, Paul suggested, ‘If you feel you can’t help, you should consider whether you truly wish to remain a Fellow of the Royal Society.’

Nevertheless, Musk only replied after Smith and Nurse indicated that the contents of their correspondence would be shared with the fellowship.


A spokesperson for the Academy confirmed that Musk has not made any comments regarding proposals to consider resigning from his fellowship, stating, “Elon Musk remains a Fellow of the Royal Society.”

In an email to Smith’s fellowship, it was noted: “The society’s officers and council determined that pursuing disciplinary action against Musk does not align with the Royal Society’s interests.” Although significant disagreements were expressed during previous fellowship meetings, Smith acknowledged that defending science globally remains the society’s foremost objective.

Not all peers advocate for condemning Musk, with some expressing concerns about potentially questioning the views of others who have shared controversial opinions. However, one fellow familiar with Smith’s email described the situation as “a significant issue.”

Another fellow noted that the leadership approach seems to prioritize pragmatism over ethical considerations. “If a new party emerges around Musk, it could lead to significant repercussions, including potential repercussions for Royal Society archives from that period,” they commented.

Stephen Curry, a professor emeritus of structural biology at Imperial College London and a previous organizer of open letters, supported the correspondence but stressed that the academy should take a more resolute and explicit stance.

“They haven’t received any indications from Elon Musk that he aligns with the Royal Society’s declared values, so it should be made clear to him that without this commitment, his fellowship must end,” he stated.

Various obstacles, including low success rates and the removal of DNA from numerous human eggs, explain why such advancements aren’t imminent. Nonetheless, it is essential to begin contemplating the societal implications.

For some, the notion of a child having two genetic fathers may never be accepted, just as there remains criticism towards gay couples expanding their families. Changing such perspectives may prove challenging, if not impossible.

Like IVF, what used to be front-page news could eventually become routine.

However, one can expect a broader public to exhibit a strict moral opposition to this idea, along with a general sense of unease. The inaugural child born from this method is, in many ways, distinct from all previous human beings. IVF-born children come into existence through a process unimaginable to our ancestors but continue to carry the genetic lineage from one male and one female ancestor.

Is this significant? Just like IVF, what was once front-page news may soon be commonplace. In a time when reproductive and trans rights are being restricted in the U.S., engaging in objective discourse about emerging technologies presents a greater challenge. Fortunately, these questions do not require immediate answers.

Will Electric Cars Lead to a More Kathic Society? | Technology

Electric vehicles (EVs) are swiftly rising in popularity worldwide; in 2024, 22% of new car sales were electric, up from 18% in 2023. Research indicates that an increasing number of people perceive EVs as superior to traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles. Anecdotal experiences on feeling unwell in an electric vehicle’s passenger or rear seat have sparked social media discussions and raised questions among prospective buyers about motion sickness.

Nonetheless, several academic studies provide scientific explanations for why some individuals may experience more sickness in EVs.

“Increased illness in EVs can be attributed to a lack of prior experience, both as drivers and passengers. The brain depends on past experiences in other vehicle types, complicating the estimation of motor skills.”

While EVs are becoming increasingly accepted, conventional gasoline vehicles still hold a strong presence. Drivers have a long-established familiarity with gas cars, enabling them to adapt more readily to specific cues. For instance, a person who has predominantly driven combustion engine cars will anticipate acceleration after the engine revs, which signals a change in speed. In contrast, electric vehicles produce minimal engine noise.

Research has identified connections between certain features of electric vehicles and motion sickness. A study conducted in 2024 found a significant correlation between motion sickness severity and seat vibrations in EVs. Meanwhile, a separate 2020 study revealed that the absence of engine noise may play a critical role in exacerbating feelings of nausea.

“Those accustomed to driving conventional vehicles learn to perceive car movements through cues such as engine revs, vibrations, and torque. Therefore, experiencing an EV for the first time presents a unique movement environment that the brain needs to adapt to,” explains Emond.

Furthermore, regenerative braking technology in EVs, which enables the motor to convert kinetic energy into electricity while slowing down, results in smooth deceleration. This gradual slowing can lead to a higher likelihood of motion sickness.

A piece of 2024 research indicated that this phenomenon may serve as a key trigger for motion sickness in EVs. The authors noted: [“regenerative braking] might direct motion sickness.”

Motion sickness is believed to arise from inconsistencies among varied sensory inputs. The brain receives simultaneous signals from the body, particularly from the inner ear, which maintains balance, alongside visual information. When there’s a conflict between these signals, the brain interprets this “neurological mismatch” as a conflict situation.

“Improved understanding of self-movement is critical for predicting motor skills to mitigate motion sickness. When the estimations of motor skills by the brain vary from actual experiences, this conflict can reach a threshold that triggers symptoms resembling ‘motion sickness,'” states Emond. “If such a conflict continues, it can lead to physiological reactions often associated with motion sickness.”

Predicting vehicle movement is crucial for mitigating motion sickness, which means that drivers are generally less likely to experience such symptoms. They have the foresight of what to expect.

As these vehicles provide fewer cues about upcoming movements, the interaction between predicted and experienced motion may contribute to the heightened incidence of motion sickness in EVs.

“When navigating a new movement environment, the brain must form new habits, lacking any prior experience to guide it. This is akin to how most individuals feel nauseous in zero-gravity contexts,” remarks Emond.

As the adoption of EVs continues to increase, researchers are exploring potential solutions to combat car-related nausea. Various studies propose that motion sickness in autonomous electric vehicles might be alleviated using visual signals, such as interactive displays and ambient lighting, or through vibration cues that enable passengers’ brains to anticipate movement changes, thereby reducing sudden sensations during electric vehicle rides.

As a new ban period looms, TikTok’s impact on society becomes clear

On January 18th, I was one of millions of Americans, scrolling through Tiktok when the all-you-can-eat video buffet service suddenly stopped just before the federal ban came into effect.
