Dan Houser Discusses Victorian Novels, Red Dead Redemption, and the Evolution of Open-World Gaming

I It’s challenging to find a more contemporary form of entertainment than open-world video games. Merging storytelling, social interaction, and the freedom to roam, these expansive technological projects offer a uniquely immersive experience with infinite possibilities. But do they truly embody novel concepts in storytelling?

This week, I had a conversation with Dan Hauser, co-founder of Rockstar and the lead writer for Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. He was in London discussing his new venture, Absurd Ventures. He’s working on a range of exciting projects, including a novel and a podcast series titled better paradise (which delves into a vast online game that ends in tragedy), as well as a comedic quest set in an online universe known as absurd verse. He mentioned that he had an epiphany regarding the series 15 years ago while giving press interviews for the Grand Theft Auto IV expansion pack.

“I was conversing with a journalist from Paris Match, a very learned French individual, who stated, ‘The game Grand Theft Auto is akin to Dickens.’ I thought, bless you for saying that! However, in retrospect, they may not reach Dickensian heights, but they’re comparable in that they create worlds. When you examine Dickens, Zola, Tolstoy—any of those authors—you sense that the entire world they describe is magnificent. This is an open world. That’s the experience you seek from the game. It’s a bizarre prism through which to view a society that somehow becomes fascinating.”

I found it incredibly engaging to discuss this concept with Hauser, as I concur that there are notable parallels between Victorian literature and contemporary narrative-driven video games. The extensive descriptive passages in these works served as a form of virtual reality, evoking vivid imagery in readers’ minds well before the advent of cinema. It’s wholly immersive. When I first read Jane Eyre a decade ago, I was struck by the richness of the inner thoughts presented, inviting readers to explore the main character’s psyche.

Hauser also noted structural resemblances to Grand Theft Auto. “There’s a sense of an expanded storytelling akin to the remarkable 19th-century novels from Thackeray onward,” he explained. “These stories can be viewed as shaggy dog tales that culminate at a single moment. They are deeply realistic; they contain a grounded progression rather than jumping around in time. The games are similarly grounded in that sense.”

For Hauser, this synthesis of Victorian literature and game design came to fruition with the creation of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar’s magnum opus and a poignant narrative of vengeance set in late 19th century America. “I consumed Victorian novels,” he shared. “I listened to the Middlemarch audiobook daily during my commute, and I loved every moment.” He faced challenges in striking the right tone for the dialogue, ultimately finding inspiration in blending Middlemarch, Sherlock Holmes, and Cowboy Pulp Fiction.

“From a writing perspective, I wanted it to feel more like a novel,” he remarked. “We believed this approach could yield something innovative story-wise. Given how visually stunning the game is and its strong art design, we aimed to anchor the narrative in a solid context. Our goal was to encapsulate the three-dimensionality of the characters’ lives while also portraying a sense of life and death in the 19th century, which is fundamentally different from our own experience.”

It’s fascinating to see how Victorian literature significantly influenced Rockstar’s acclaimed adventures. The gaming industry often feels inward-looking, with new titles being slightly modified iterations of successful older games, recycling the same fantasy and science fiction narratives. Drawing on Tolkien, Akira, or Blade Runner isn’t inherently problematic, but broadening one’s literary horizons is always beneficial. I eagerly anticipate how Hauser’s new endeavor will transform the notion of open-world gaming in the 21st century, yet part of me wishes he would fully embrace the adventure of a grand Victorian novel.

Forget Pride and Prejudice and Zombies; perhaps it’s time for Middlemarch and Machine Guns.

“I was reflecting on a recent question block about non-violent games and thought, are there games that maintain violent elements but still provide alternative paths to completion? I adored Red Dead Redemption 2, yet was frustrated that firearms were often the only means to resolve conflicts. I’ve seen countless amusing videos of players attempting to finish inherently violent games without bloodshed, highlighting a desire for pacifism.”

I distinctly remember playing the original Splinter Cell on Xbox, where the protagonist opts for a non-lethal approach by incapacitating foes rather than killing them. While it took me a long time to navigate, it was indeed a viable path offered by the game. The steampunk classic Dishonored and its sequel are known for allowing players to wrap up their quests without resorting to lethal force, utilizing supernatural abilities to manipulate their surroundings. However, if memory serves, choosing the pacifist route does make the game considerably harder.

In fact, most stealth games permit a non-violent approach, though few specifically reward players for sparing lives. One notable exception is the beloved comic-inspired adventure Undertale, where players can ultimately engage monsters in dialogue instead of combat. I also believe it’s feasible to play through both original Fallout titles (possibly even Fallout: New Vegas) without killing anyone, should players possess enough charisma to navigate tough scenarios through dialogue.

More of a science-themed novel than pure science fiction, it is exquisitely written and much easier to read than Ice. This story discusses the natural world and environmental degradation through the lens of the extinct sea cow’s journey. It’s an ideal seasonal gift for any literary enthusiast who appreciates tales of exploration or early scientific discoveries from the 1700s.

Now, I want to bring attention to a captivating book that has been on my mind since the start of the year. For all science fiction fans, this is likely to catch your interest.

This year’s standout science fiction for me is Slow Gods, the debut sci-fi novel from renowned author Claire North.

Recently, new science fiction works are often likened to those of the late Iain M. Banks, as publishers recognize the fanbase eager for such tales. While direct comparisons might be tenuous, Slow Gods certainly has the ambition and creativity to warrant such praise.

For those who enjoy classic science fiction narratives, I would also suggest Here and Beyond, which tells a captivating story reminiscent of the Generational Ark, authored by Hal LaCroix.

What We Can Know by Ian McEwan, while not strictly science fiction, is set in a sunken vision of Britain, qualifying it as speculative and environmental dystopia. This makes it a worthwhile read even if you’re not typically a fan of McEwan, as many of its themes linger long after you finish.

Another unique and speculative debut is Simply Put, It’s Beautiful, from Roz Dineen, who is gaining a lot of traction in the UK right now.

If you’re interested in short stories and essays within science fiction, I highly recommend View from the Stars, authored by the renowned Liu Cixin, known for The Three-Body Problem. This collection showcases both fiction and nonfiction, demonstrating Liu’s talent as a writer and thinker.


New science fiction is often compared to the works of Iain M. Banks. Slow Gods possesses the scope and fearlessness to merit such comparisons.

Regarding futuristic technology, I found Somebody Like Me by Lucy Lapinska (which examines robot rights) and Every Version of You by Grace Chan (a fresh perspective on humanity in a digital future) to be particularly appealing.

In conclusion, for a gift opportunity for an aspiring science fiction enthusiast, I revisited three timeless classics this year that have aged gracefully: The Prestige by Christopher Priest (Emotionally Complex Puzzles), Neuromancer by William Gibson (The book that sparked the Cyberpunk movement, still profoundly relevant), and The Draco Tavern by Larry Niven (a series of interconnected short stories filled with unexpected concepts).

Novels with Distinctive Structures are Often Considered Classics

The persistent appeal of books may hinge on more than their narratives

What causes certain novels to be forgotten over time while others achieve bestseller status upon release only to vanish later? This research suggests the answers may lie within the intricacies of their language and sentence structure.

Prior studies have delved into the attributes that elevate certain books to bestseller status. Charming male protagonists often dominate; however, we know little about the factors that sustain a novel’s popularity a century later.

For deeper insights, refer to Leyao Wang from York University in Toronto, Canada. She and her colleagues examined 300 English novels published between 1909 and 1923. Half of these titles have made it to the top 10 bestseller lists. Publishers weekly commenced its trade in 1872 with titles like Lucky Young Man by William John Locke and Black Cow by Gertrude Thurston.

However, these novels don’t appear in readers’ top 10 read lists—past, present, or future. This data reflects the publication year of the novels. The other half, which includes titles like The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie and Anne of Avonlea by Lucy Maud Montgomery, regardless of their bestseller status at the time, continue to gain traction on Goodreads today.

The research team employed AI models to classify these two categories based on 70% of the selected novels. When these models analyzed the full text for word patterns, it was observed that bestsellers were generally longer and incorporated more colloquial expressions like “yeah,” “oh,” and “okay.” These books also made greater use of punctuation.

Researchers assert these characteristics don’t carry the same weight in capturing today’s readers’ interest, yet they significantly enhance readability and overall appeal.

Notably, modern favorites tend to be concise yet feature more complex sentences and vocabulary. This prompted researchers to question whether this necessitates greater attention from readers.

When the AI models were evaluated against the remaining 30% of books, they successfully categorized them with approximately 70% accuracy.

“Numerous other factors likely influence longevity, such as themes, marketing strategies, and author recognition, yet our findings indicate that aspects of the text alone can potentially predict timelessness without considering these more apparent external factors,” the researchers noted. Gaining an understanding of what elements render literature both captivating and enduring “could prove crucial for both publishers and authors.”

However, Dorothy Hale at the University of California, Berkeley cautions that the impact of a novel should be assessed over a century before deeming it timeless. She highlights that the popularity of well-established classics also varies over time. “While many might regard Shakespeare as the quintessential timeless author in English literature, there’s a current trend in American institutions to drop Shakespeare requirements from English majors,” she observes.

In a desolate lab in the desert, Kinsey and her team unearth bizarre specimens in the sand. Breaking quarantine to bring one inside, they soon realize it seeks a new host.

This intriguing blend of horror, science fiction, and fantasy captures my attention. Set against a backdrop of ecological dread, Kinsey excavates two ancient bodies found in Somerset Fen, while also exploring “her own wildness,” alongside archaebotanist Nell.

Author Rie Quadan: The Case for Writing Award-Winning Novels with ChatGPT | Books

“I had a conversation with Japanese novelist Rie Quadan:

The 34-year-old author joins me on Zoom from her home near Tokyo, just before the release of the English translation of her fourth novel, “The Tower of Pity Tokyo.”. This book, although partly penned with ChatGPT, ignited debate in Japan after it clinched a prestigious award.

Set in the heart of Tokyo’s Tower of Pity, the story centers on Japanese architect Sarah Matinna, tasked with constructing a new facility for convicted criminals. Ironically, this structure represents what one character describes as “the extraordinary breadth of the Japanese.”

Within the narrative, Sarah—herself a victim of violent crime—questions whether this compassionate stance towards criminals is justified. Does this empathy truly mirror Japanese society?

“It’s definitely prevalent,” Kudan explains. She mentions being motivated to write the novel following the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinobe in July 2022. “The shooter drew significant attention in Japan. The entire process.”

The story explores public perceptions of criminals in a serious yet satirical manner. Prospective occupants of the tower must undergo a “sympathy test” to assess their worthiness for compassion (“Have your parents ever been violent towards you? – yes/no/don’t know”) … with the final judgment resting with AI.

Pity Tower Tokyo received the Akigawa Award for newcomer authors in 2024. She expresses her satisfaction, yet admits feeling liberated, as the pressure to win such awards is overwhelming. In 2022, she was nominated for a female student award for the book but did not win. “I felt I’d disappointed others by not securing that award. I wished to avoid a repeat of that experience. Such a prize stays with you for life.”

Notably, the book sparked interest due to its AI-generated content (5% initially claimed, now clarified as an approximation). This portion consists of a character’s dialogue with ChatGPT. However, Quadan emphasizes she drew significant inspiration for the novel as she found AI’s reflection of human thought processes intriguing. In essence, her AI inclusion aims to illuminate its impacts rather than mislead readers.

One character expresses compassion for the chatbot, critiquing “the hollow existence of merely regurgitating a patchwork of others’ words without grasping their meaning.”

Is Quadan worried about AI outpacing human authors? “Perhaps that future may come to pass, but for now, AI cannot craft a novel superior to human writers.” Among Japanese readers, Toh Tokyo “has garnered attention for utilizing AI. However, its greater focus lies on language itself, prompting rich discussions about how language evolution over recent decades shapes behavior and viewpoints.”

These topics feed into the core themes of Quadan’s novel. Pity Tower Tokyo fundamentally investigates language, illustrating how it not only reveals our identities but also influences our expressions. “Words shape our reality,” one character articulates.

The novel raises crucial discussions surrounding the growth of Japanese language. This includes the use of scripts for foreign-derived words. Katakana (traditionally, Hiragana scripts and kanji express native words) expresses thoughts such as “folinwakazu” and “euphemism” that resonate differently with Japanese native speakers. Sarah’s character observes that “Japanese people seem intent on distancing themselves from their language.” Her boyfriend criticizes this “miserable katakana spread.”

Yet, halting it feels daunting, perhaps unachievable. Quadan notes that older generations occasionally opt for katakana over kanji, while for younger generations, including Quadan—born in 1990—katakana has “become an unquestionable norm.”

This isn’t mere academic or cultural trivia; it reflects pressing issues in contemporary Japanese politics. Following last month’s elections, far-right party Sansate gained significant traction, winning 14 Senate seats, an increase from just one previously. This reflects its campaign stance, akin to Trump’s “America First,” suggesting a nationalistic trend. Such success raises concerns about societal attitudes towards diversity in Japan.

“Sadly, the reality is that not all Japanese people embrace diversity. When I introduced my non-Japanese boyfriend to my parents over a decade ago, my mother reacted with distress. She panicked.”

“There are individuals around us who may not even realize their own beliefs. Externally, many Japanese are conscious of projecting an image of inclusivity [toward diversity]. The clash between internal beliefs and external expressions is a notable characteristic of Japanese society.”

This discussion leads us back to language’s role as both a concealer and revealer. The slogan “Japanese First” illustrates how the Sansate Party employs katakana for “first” instead of traditional kanji. “Using the katakana alternative diffuses many negative connotations, repurposing them as neutral. It doesn’t evoke the same feelings in people.”

In essence, does this give rise to a kind of plausible deniability? “Indeed. They are acutely aware of their intentions. Thus, we must remain vigilant regarding katakana usage,” concludes Quadan. “Whenever katakana is employed, we should inquire: what are they trying to obscure?”

Interview with Larry Niven: A Conversation with the Ringworld Legend on His Classic Science Fiction Novels

Larry Niven is a towering figure in the realm of science fiction, and I felt honored to interview him via Zoom from his home in Los Angeles. His seminal 1970 novel, Ringworld, is this month’s selection for the New Scientist Book Club. However, his literary contributions span numerous novels and short stories, including one of my personal favorites, An outdated world. At 87, he continues to write, and we discussed his insights on Ringworld, the projects he’s currently working on, and his thoughts on humanity’s potential to venture beyond our solar system. Below is an edited transcript of our conversation.

Emily H. Wilson: Larry, thank you for participating in this interview and for being part of the New Scientist Book Club. It is a tremendous honor to speak with someone so central to the evolution of this genre.

Larry Niven: Thank you.

EHW: What inspired you to become a science fiction writer?

LN: I was immersed in science fiction during my early adulthood, but I only discovered the fandom when I started selling my stories. That connection was invaluable for me.

EHW: What was the genesis of the idea behind Ringworld?

LN: The concept of the Dyson sphere—hypothetical megastructures in space—was introduced to me by another writer, possibly Paul Anderson. Intrigued by the idea, I realized we could observe other civilizations based on their energy usage. But to harness that energy, one needs a way to block sunlight. I envisioned using rotational gravity for the Dyson sphere, focusing on its equatorial regions, and thus conceptualized the “poor man’s Dyson sphere.”

EHW: A book club member noted that Ringworld evokes a sense of awe and wonder.

LN: My choice to depict a grand structure, despite the risk of ridicule, contributed to my success. Ringworld serves as a knowledge playground where readers can engage with its complexities and even rediscover my oversights.

EHW: Reflecting back from 2025, it seems like it was an immediate success, altering your career trajectory.

LN: That’s absolutely true.

EHW: You mentioned in your writings that New Scientist highlighted how students and scholars engaged with physics concepts in Ringworld post-publication. How did that affect you? Do you think we will see such global interaction today?

LN: Science fiction permeates various media like film and comics. While Ringworld remains significant, capturing the attention of mathematicians isn’t straightforward.

EHW: What is the essence of science fiction?

LN: It’s about envisioning the future. Things are in flux, and science fiction highlights the notion that minds can think similarly but are fundamentally different.

EHW: Why did you write Ringworld Engineers as a sequel? One book club member mentioned that it was their first introduction to your work.

LN: I aimed to improve upon Ringworld since its inhabitants were not fleshed out enough. Robert Heinlein told me that the two books together formed a significant narrative.

EHW: The universe in Ringworld set in known space led to extensive narrative weaving. How did that come about?

LN: It seemed logical to create interlinked stories within the universe I had built. This web of narrative has been evolving for over 60 years.

EHW: If you were to rewrite Ringworld today, would it differ from the original?

LN: I’ve often thought that if I were to begin anew, I would focus on the barriers of interstellar travel. Building a ring world implies challenges in reaching other stars.

EHW: At what point in your career did you become a full-time science writer? Did you ever balance it with other jobs?

LN: I was a science enthusiast, particularly in astrophysics and astronomy. At 24, I realized my options were limited, which led me to start writing.

EHW: How is science fiction perceived today?

LN: I’m not as engaged with the field nowadays. I often buy books online for my Kindle, but that doesn’t mean I make the most of the current offerings.

EHW: One of my favorites of yours, An outdated world, isn’t widely read despite being a fantastic story told concisely. What can you share about writing that book?

LN: Initially, it was a dystopian tale about people frozen for the future, struggling with their wishes when they were revived—without civil rights. I encapsulated that in a short story called Rammer, which turned into the first chapter of An outdated world. I eventually continued that narrative as I became comfortable exploring the future.

EHW: You were known for your collaboration on The Mote in God’s Eye with Jerry Pournelle. How do two authors co-write a novel?

LN: Jerry and I collaborated on roughly nine novels. When he proposed the idea to co-write, I accepted without knowing where it would lead, and it turned out to be both fun and challenging. Our involvement with the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Association helped shape the narrative over three years and even earned us an award for the best unfinished novel.

EHW: Before this interview, you mentioned your book Draco’s Izakaya, a collection of short stories. I approached it hesitantly, as I’m not a short story person. It uniquely merges narratives, introducing readers to aliens through the bartender’s character. It felt more like a novel than a traditional collection. What was your aim in writing it?

LN: I started writing short stories knowing they needed substance beyond mere glimpses. My goal for Draco’s Izakaya was to convey wisdom within a lean structure, crafting a narrative that felt unified despite its brevity.

EHW: If you were to recommend four other books alongside Draco’s Izakaya, which would you choose?

LN: Depending on the individual asking, I might suggest: Lucifer’s Hammer for casual readers, Scaffold for military personnel, Ringworld for true fans, and Destiny’s Road for general audiences as well.

EHW: What are you currently working on?

LN: I’m collaborating with Stephen Burns on a space novel featuring Gil “Arm” Hamilton. We’ve begun an anthology project, and our short story, The Sacred Cow, which features Gil, won an award from Analog Magazine. Now, we’re encouraged to produce more content.

EHW: A few quick questions: What is your favorite science fiction book that you didn’t write?

LN: I truly enjoy Nova by Samuel R. Delany.

EHW: What is a favorite book in a genre you haven’t ventured into?

LN: I believe it must be The Wizard of Oz.

EHW: What is your favorite science fiction television show?

LN: Star Trek, but I’m not as caught up with it.

EHW: What is your all-time favorite sci-fi film?

LN: I have a fondness for Destination Moon and admire ambitious works like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Rollerball for their ambition.

EHW: What advice would you give to aspiring science fiction writers today?

LN: Simplify your approach, much like I did.

New Space Novels by Adrian Tchaikovsky: An Excerpt from Alien Clay

“Alien Clay sends some serious criminals to a labor camp on a remote planet.”

They say you shouldn’t start a story by waking up, but when you’ve been in a deep sleep for 30 years, you don’t know where else to start.

It may begin with awakening and end with awakening.

I’ve heard that hard sleep is a technical term. It’s hard because you’re shut down, dry, and frozen for your journey from star to star. They make it into art – it takes 11 minutes like clockwork. Some people don’t wake up, and even if they wake up, others don’t survive the descent. Destruction is certainly something we all face, but for some it lasts less than for others. Every time the chute unfolds, the bones tremble, and while I see others similarly torn from the teeth of the ground, I also watch a handful of bones fall as the chute fails. They’re still screaming because they remember just knowing that they’re going to die all over again.

You won’t die by not waking up, and you won’t die by falling off the edge of the atmosphere. I am not recorded in the ledger as acceptable waste. They will have to calculate very carefully the exact level of expense required and the exact proportion of delivery failures, or deaths, that this will entail. After all, who would want to spend a penny more than necessary to send a death row inmate to a concentration camp in a faraway world? People who rebelled against the system and now have to pay their dues for the rest of their lives. Some people are like me. You’ll hear the numbers later, but acceptable waste is 20 percent. If that sounds like an absurd loss of investment, you don’t know the history of people transporting others from place to place against their will.

In the cramped orbital quarters of a prison attached to a spaceport, yes, I knew I would be deported to a concentration camp, but even a junior scholar like me could at least do what I could. Now, after plummeting to this fate and then watching the Death Slash Welcome Committee, I regret everything. If a political official magically appeared and offered me a pardon if I signed a confession, I would reach for a pen. Quite unlike this song, I regret every single choice in my life that led me to this point. This is a moment of weakness.

Bubbles deflate around me. I struggled to fight it off for a minute to avoid choking on the sticky plastic before it cut me off. They have special tools, such as heated knives, to do this. I got a shallow glowing cut along my thigh, which attests to their general carelessness in handling it. One more person will be wasted when the last one is released and by then it will be too late. This Month’s Top New Science Fiction: George R.R. Martin and Three-Body Problem Graphic Novels

December is traditionally a quiet month in the publishing world, and that’s true this year as well, with fewer new books than usual to tempt us sci-fi geeks. However, there are some novels that I find very enjoyable. One example is Makana Yamamoto’s debut novel, which was described by the publisher as an “adventurous love letter” to Hawaii. And less interesting, but just as fascinating, is Arthur C. Clarke Prize winner Jane Rogers’ new collection of short stories, all climate fiction and (according to the publisher) “no easy answers. “It raises questions about personal responsibility.” It might also publish a huge and expensive 10-volume graphic novel, an adaptation of Liu Cixin’s novel. three body problem Put it on my Christmas wishlist – it sounds really epic.
