A Minor Adjustment to the “For You” Algorithm Can Rapidly Foster Political Polarization.

Studies indicate that altering the tone of posts on X can escalate political polarization within just a week, a shift that traditionally would have taken about three years.

An innovative study examining the impact of Elon Musk’s social media platforms on political polarization discovered that even minor increases in posts featuring anti-democratic sentiments or partisan aggression led to a marked rise in negative sentiments toward the opposing political faction among Democrats and Republicans.


The level of division, termed “emotional polarization,” reached in just one week due to the modifications made to the feeds of a specific number of X users equated to what would typically take an average of three years from 1978 to 2020.

Most of the over 1,000 participants in the experiment during the 2024 U.S. presidential election remained unaware of the changes in the tone of their feeds.

The campaign featured divisive viral content on X, including a fake image of Kamala Harris with Jeffrey Epstein and an AI-generated depiction from an image Musk posted showing Harris as a communist dictator, which garnered 84 million views.

Researchers observed that consistent exposure to posts reflecting anti-democratic views or partisan animosity significantly affected users’ feelings towards polarization, inducing heightened emotions of sadness and anger.

Musk acquired Twitter in 2022, rebranded it as X, and introduced a “for you” feed that presented content aimed at maximizing user engagement rather than just displaying posts from accounts that users actively follow.

The finding that increasing anti-democratic content heightens hostility towards political adversaries underscores the “power of algorithms,” noted Martin Savesky, an assistant professor at the University of Washington’s School of Information and a co-author of the study alongside colleagues from Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, and Northeastern University. This research is published in Science magazine.

“While the adjustments in users’ feeds were subtle, they reported marked changes in their sentiments toward others,” explained Tiziano Picardi, an assistant professor in the Johns Hopkins University School of Computer Science and co-author of the study. “These shifts align with approximately three years of polarization trends seen in the U.S.”

The study also indicated that even slight alterations in users’ feed content could substantially diminish political hostility between Republicans and Democrats, implying that X could foster political unity if Musk opts to implement such changes.

“The intriguing aspect of these findings is that platforms can implement measures to mitigate polarization,” added Savesky. “This offers a new perspective for algorithm design.”

According to Pew Research, eight in ten American adults believe there’s an inability among Republicans and Democrats to agree on not only policies, but also on fundamental facts. The evolution of political polarization caused by exposure to posts on X was evaluated using an innovative methodology. Initially, researchers utilized AI to analyze posts in X’s “for you” feed in real time. The findings indicated that some groups were exposed to more divisive content while others faced less, demonstrating X’s predominant influence. Divisive posts included support for undemocratic practices, partisan violence, a lack of bipartisan consensus, and skewed interpretations of politicized facts.

After a week of reading these subtly modified feeds, researchers prompted users to evaluate their political opponents’ warmth or coldness, favorability or unfavorability. Changes in “emotional deflection” were rated at two degrees or higher on a scale from 0 to 100 on a “feeling thermometer.” This level of increase in polarization matched the typical trend observed in the U.S. over the past four decades leading to 2020. Conversely, reducing posts with anti-democratic views and partisan hostility led to a corresponding decline in political polarization.

Social media platforms have long faced criticism for amplifying divisive content to boost user engagement and thereby increase advertising revenue. Nevertheless, the study revealed that when divisive posts were deprioritized, users tended to like and share more frequently, despite a slight decrease in overall engagement in terms of time spent on the platform and posts viewed.

“The effectiveness of this approach illustrates its potential for integration into social media AI, aimed at mitigating detrimental personal and societal impacts,” the authors argue. “Simultaneously, our engagement analysis indicates a notable trade-off; implementing such measures could decrease short-term engagement levels, posing challenges to engagement-driven business models, supporting the idea that content that elicits strong reactions tends to generate more engagement.”

Bird Flu Cases Surge Rapidly Despite Summer Season

The summer was notably calm regarding bird flu. There was a slight decrease in egg prices, a reduction in the number of poultry flocks being culled, and authorities remained hopeful.

This increase coincides with a notable rise in infections observed in wild birds in northern regions.

State officials are preparing for a challenging fall, a season known for escalating case numbers.

“We confirmed our first positive case last week,” stated Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig. This incident originated from a turkey farm in Calhoun County. “The real concern is how widespread this will become and what the fall season holds for us.”

Naig noted it’s still early to determine the outbreak’s impact on egg prices.

“The most honest answer is that we will have to wait and see. I wish I could provide more clarity,” Naig added.

This marks the fourth consecutive fall with rising bird flu infections, suggesting the virus is becoming endemic among wild birds and could continually threaten poultry.

“It’s not disappearing. It appears to be quite established,” Voss remarked.

The further the virus spreads, the higher the risk of it mutating to infect humans effectively. Some experts are concerned that budget cuts by the Trump administration on mRNA research could hinder scientists’ rapid development of new vaccines. Nevertheless, the current public health risk remains minimal.

As autumn progresses, authorities, wildlife specialists, and virologists are adopting a vigilant but patient stance.

“These times are intriguing,” noted Declan Schroeder, an associate professor of virology at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. “Everyone is watching closely to see the outcome.”


Avian influenza was initially spotted in U.S. commercial flocks in February 2022, following earlier outbreaks among wild birds. Nearly all infected poultry succumb, with over 175 million birds culled or killed by this summer. Two years ago, it was unexpectedly found that avian influenza had moved to dairy cows and was detected in unpasteurized raw milk, leading to significant changes in agricultural practices and milk testing.

At least 70 people have been infected, primarily farm workers who have close contact with birds and livestock. One fatality has occurred.

Researchers believe that wild birds spread the disease to poultry farms through multiple channels: direct contact, feed contamination, and workers inadvertently carrying the virus into barns. This makes the migration period a significant risk factor for outbreaks.

“If an infected bird migrates through a region and spreads the disease to others, our estimates indicate that the infection can spread rapidly,” explained Michael Ward, a professor focused on migration studies at the University of Illinois.

Ward added that the reduction of natural habitats is forcing birds to gather more closely, increasing the potential for the virus’s spread. In Illinois, wetland areas are declining due to drought conditions.

“This scenario is ideal for the virus to thrive,” Ward noted.

In response to inquiries regarding the uptick in avian influenza detections and the federal government’s course of action, the U.S. Department of Agriculture highlighted a five-pillar strategy announced in February, which allocates $100 million towards new biosecurity measures and vaccine development for poultry.

Countries like France are already vaccinating their poultry, but the Agriculture Department is still deliberating on whether the U.S. should follow suit. No vaccines have been approved yet, and their implementation could affect U.S. exports.

“While we believe an effective vaccination strategy would greatly help egg and turkey producers, we recognize the need for careful implementation to avoid negative impacts on other markets,” Naig explained. “The USDA is currently focused on this, and we are waiting to see what the vaccination strategy entails.”

Scientists have long expressed concerns that avian influenza viruses may eventually adapt to spread efficiently among humans. Although the risk remains low at present, Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, specializing in infectious diseases, recommends that people take precautionary measures to prevent H5N1 and seasonal influenza infections.

“Get vaccinated against the flu. Avoid raw milk or unpasteurized cheese, especially during outbreaks. Don’t feed your cat outdoors during bird migration season,” Chin-Hong urges.

A scenario where humans contract both H5N1 and seasonal influenza simultaneously could pose challenges, as the avian influenza virus might easily mutate its genetic structure to adapt to humans.

The CDC halted H5N1 coordination meetings with healthcare providers earlier this spring. Chin-Hong is critical of this move, advocating for the agency to resume communications and opposing the administration’s decision to reduce funding for mRNA vaccine research. Biotechnology firm Moderna was in the process of creating an avian influenza vaccine utilizing an mRNA platform, but the Health and Human Services Department withdrew its grant.

Hurricane Erin has regained strength, returning to a Category 4 storm over the weekend.

The recent hurricane activity has led to the formation of one of the most rapidly intensifying Atlantic hurricanes on record, suggesting that climate change is elevating the threat of quickly strengthening storms.

Erin was the first hurricane of this Atlantic season, rapidly escalating from a Category 1 to a Category 5 storm in just over 24 hours. Even after fluctuations in intensity, Erin’s transformation back to a Category 4 storm is among the five fastest transitions from Category 1 to Category 5.

The hurricane is anticipated to grow stronger on Monday as it moves east of the Bahamas. For more information, refer to the National Hurricane Center’s latest advisory. Heavy rainfall is expected in Hispaniola on Monday, as well as in parts of the Turks and Caicos, and the southeastern and central Bahamas until Tuesday.

Rapid intensification has been well-documented in recent years, with Hurricane Dorian reaching peak winds of 150 mph to 185 mph in just nine hours in 2019. Additionally, Hurricane Ian experienced rapid strengthening before making landfall in Florida in 2022.

Last year, Hurricane Milton’s sustained wind speed astonishingly rose by 90 mph over approximately 25 hours. Other notable instances of rapid strengthening include Hurricanes Harvey (2017), Laura (2020), Ida (2021), and Ian (2023).

Despite these observations, predicting rapid intensification remains a challenge. Scientists understand that warm sea surface temperatures, high humidity, and favorable atmospheric conditions play crucial roles, but further research is essential to comprehend the specific mechanics at play in individual storms.

In the coming days, the National Hurricane Center indicated that Erin will track between Bermuda and the US East Coast.

While the storms are not forecasted to make direct landfall, they can still generate dangerous surf, strong currents, and other hazardous conditions affecting the Bahamas, Bermuda, the US East Coast, and Canada’s Atlantic region.

A Silent Virus Rapidly Alters Our Genome and Enhances Its Growth

Viruses that typically cause herpes can reform their genome within an hour following infection, potentially allowing scientists to address severe cases more effectively.

Billions globally are infected by Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1), often without their knowledge. Transmission occurs via contact with infected saliva or skin around the mouth.

Upon invading a host cell, the virus replicates within the nucleus, where genetic material is preserved among the strands of DNA. These strands surround proteins, with some sections tightly coiling to deactivate genes while others form looser loops where genes remain active. In these less dense areas, proteins can transcribe DNA into messenger RNA, encoding for a protein essential for cellular function.

Prior research has indicated that the human genome becomes more tightly coiled following HSV-1 infection, possibly disrupting cellular functions, although the cause of this coiling was previously uncertain.

For further details, consult Alvaro Castells-Garcia at the genome regulatory center in Barcelona, Spain, whose team employs advanced microscopy to investigate HSV-1, infecting human lung cells and observing structures that are 3,500 times thinner than a hair. “This offers a higher resolution than most prior studies,” notes Castells-Garcia.

They discovered that within an hour post-infection, transcription factors were already pilfered from the human genome, corroborating previous findings.

Moreover, this thievery is what appears to cause the host’s DNA to coil more tightly, compressing it to 30% of its volume within 8 hours of infection.

The virus also interacts with specific areas of the host genome that encode the stolen transcription factors, inhibiting activity in those regions and enhancing the expression of genes that facilitate its own growth.

“Previously, I thought the virus made random contacts with the genome,” comments team member Esther Gonzalez Almera at the genome regulation center. “However, it’s clear that viruses specifically target certain regions of their genome, which often contain genes critical to sustaining the infection and producing viral RNA and proteins.”

In another segment of the study, researchers found that utilizing experimental cancer treatments to obstruct one of the transcription factors taken by HSV-1 inhibited its replication in human lung cells in the laboratory. This suggests that such medications could assist in treating HSV-1 in individuals suffering from severe herpes outbreaks and those at higher risk for complications, as González-Almela explains. Mild cases typically resolve without intervention.

This treatment may also be effective against other pathogens, such as adenoviruses that lead to colds, and noroviruses associated with gastroenteritis. “Other viruses similar to HSV-1 may employ analogous strategies,” states Benjamin Krishna from Cambridge University. “These could represent [potential types of experimental drugs] for addressing such cases as well,” he adds.

Vascular Organoids Rapidly Repair Injured Tissue

A new method using small, lab-grown vascular structures has effectively restored blood flow to injured tissue in mice, significantly reducing necrosis. This technique shows promise for mitigating damage caused by injuries or blood clots in the future.

Previously, researchers developed vascular organoids by immersing human stem cells in a mix of chemicals, a process that took weeks and often resulted in structures that did not accurately replicate natural blood vessels, according to Juan Melero-Martin from Harvard University.

In a new approach, Melero-Martin and his team genetically modified human stem cells derived from reprogrammed skin cells. By introducing a genetic sequence and the antibiotic doxycycline, they were able to create vascular organoids in just five days. “The resulting blood vessels exhibited protein and gene activity levels closely resembling those of natural human tissues,” notes Melero-Martin.

To evaluate the organoids’ ability to rehabilitate damaged tissue, the researchers surgically obstructed the blood supply to one leg of several mice, reducing blood flow to less than 10% of normal. After an hour, they introduced 1,000 organoids at the injury site.

Two weeks post-implantation, imaging revealed that the new blood vessels had integrated with the existing ones, restoring blood flow to approximately 50% of normal levels, as stated by Oscar Abiles at Stanford University. “In cases of heart attacks, restoring even this amount of blood flow can significantly minimize tissue damage.”

Post-treatment, about 75% of the mice exhibited minimal dead tissue, while in a control group without organoid treatment, nearly 90% experienced severe tissue death.

In additional trials, the team treated mice with type 1 diabetes with organoids, which had caused pancreatic damage and elevated blood glucose levels. They discovered that integrating organoids with pancreatic tissue transplantation greatly enhanced glycemic control compared to transplantation alone.

However, further studies involving larger animals such as pigs are essential before considering human trials, Abirez states. Melero-Martin anticipates that human research could begin within five years.

Besides facilitating tissue repair, these findings may lead to the development of lab-grown mini-organs that more accurately represent bodily functions or even mini-tumors for research and treatment testing.

“Until recently, organoids lacked blood vessels and could only grow to a limited size. Beyond a few millimeters, they began to perish,” explains Abirez. “This study offers a method to incorporate blood vessels into organoids, thus enhancing their fidelity to human physiology and aiding treatment development.”

First, smoking predominantly impacts men, with only 2% of Chinese women being smokers about half of the male population smokes. This contrasts sharply with countries like the US and UK, where smoking rates are on a downward trend, according to Chen.

A Western trend mirrored in China involves rising rates of diabetes and obesity, particularly over recent decades, both recognized risk factors for dementia. This shift may be attributed to the adoption of a Western-style diet, which is generally higher in fat and calories, Chen explains. He posits that as younger generations in China smoke less, dementia rates may eventually mirror those of the US or UK, albeit the present conditions continue to exert a substantial influence on China.

“Dementia is among the costliest diseases globally, necessitating extensive care and treatment,” Chen emphasizes. “As for aging, China possesses the largest elderly population worldwide. There are few young individuals to care for this significant number of seniors living with dementia, presenting numerous challenges.”
