Self-Driving Cars Hit UK Roads: The Challenging Journey Ahead

The timeless inquiry from the backseat remains relevant as we approach a new age of driverless vehicles. “Are we close?” For those in the UK, the promise of fully autonomous cars has been long-awaited, and the answer is “yes, almost”—but not quite there yet.

A pivotal advancement in the journey toward autonomous driving is on the cusp of realization. Waymo, known for its successful robotaxi operations in San Francisco and several other U.S. cities, announced recently that it plans to introduce its vehicles to London.

Specifics are limited, yet the potential is intriguing. The groundbreaking California-based firm stated that its self-driving service “will be providing driverless vehicles on this side of the Atlantic in 2026… We’re excited to cater to Londoners and the millions visiting London next year.”

These visitors may want to grab a London Underground Oyster card just in case. This past summer, the UK government announced initiatives aimed at enticing major tech companies, aiming to hasten the rollout of self-driving vehicles, with robotaxis potentially entering regulated public trials as early as spring 2026. However, regulations are still being finalized, which may mean that safety drivers remain in the mix for a while longer.

The British company Wave, in collaboration with Uber, has unveiled plans to develop a more modest Level 4 fully autonomous vehicle and to commence public road tests in London.

While Americans are leisurely experiencing self-driving vehicles, the UK’s winding road to this technology has been met with commitments that vanish like pedestrians in the rain. Back in 2018, Addison Lee, in conjunction with researchers from the University of Oxford, promised robotaxis by 2021.

A year ago, Nissan nearly achieved having one of its Leaf models drive itself without incident near Becton, east London. The then-transport secretary, Chris Grayling, forecasted self-driving cars arriving within four years, with small pods autonomously navigating around the O2 in Greenwich. The offspring of a British innovation, the Union Jack-patterned Sinclair C5 Tardis, was showcased in a Milton Keynes car park back in 2015. Vince Cable, the business secretary at the time, confidently stated that 100 of these would soon ferry passengers across town for just £2 each.

Meanwhile, in regions like the U.S. and parts of China, self-driving taxi services are nearing routine functionality, rendering Waymo’s impending arrival more significant compared to earlier aspirations and predictions.

In San Francisco, Waymo’s home base, self-driving cars have integrated seamlessly into daily life, traversing the city’s challenging hilly streets at a deliberate pace.

Since its full implementation in June 2024, it has established its place alongside electric scooters and city buses within the urban landscape. Riding a Waymo has become a must-try attraction for visitors, akin to experiencing the city’s historic trolley cars.

Democratic Mayor Daniel Lurie has advocated for expansion to rejuvenate the downtown district, but the streets still host many people experiencing homelessness, creating a stark contrast as high-tech AI-driven vehicles pass by individuals living in extreme poverty.

The modified white Jaguar iPace resembles surveillance equipment, featuring rapidly rotating cameras on each side and roof akin to a police siren. Advertised similarly to Uber or Lyft rides via an app, the absence of a human driver and the steering wheel twirling under its digital command serve as a poignant reminder of the economic upheaval these vehicles may precipitate.

In 2024, data referenced by The Economist indicated that the number of people employed by taxi firms in San Francisco increased by 7%, alongside a 14% rise in salaries. The newspaper noted that Lyft’s CEO David Risher predicted that self-driving taxis “will actually grow the market.”

Yet, those on the front lines may not share this optimism. An Uber driver from Venezuela expressed doubts when asked about Waymo while in San Francisco’s Mission District: “I think I have about a year left in this job.”

For passengers, riding a Waymo evokes a sense of entrusting their journey to artificial intelligence. Upon hailing the vehicle via the app, a warm welcome greets them, initially displaying their initials on the digital screen atop the car. Tapping the app unlocks the doors, while a friendly voice reminds riders to buckle their seatbelts. A broad selection of music is readily available, creating a truly intimate atmosphere behind the tinted rear windows.

Pressing the ‘Start Ride’ button on the touchscreen allows the car to smoothly merge into traffic. The gear shift, adorned with a message that reads “Keep your hands out of it,” spins like a ghostly fairground attraction.

Soon enough, riders cultivate a sense of comfort while remaining cautious enough to avert dangers. A scrolling map on the screen displays their route and updates the estimated time of arrival. The ‘Stop Now’ button will only engage once it’s safe to do so, but the option to change the original destination is appreciated.

Waymo has sparked diverse social reactions. Recently, three individuals stalled at a busy intersection in the Marina District, visibly disoriented with blinking lights, attracting cheers from onlookers, while one man executed multiple backflips off a nearby vehicle.

In July, a prankster gathered a crowd at a dead-end street, leading everyone to summon a Waymo simultaneously, creating a spectacle featuring 50 robocars. Earlier in 2024, one such vehicle was vandalized, covered in graffiti, and set ablaze during the Lunar New Year celebrations in Chinatown.

If the black taxi driver does not react directly, it’s possible a similar reception will greet the driverless taxis. Steve McNamara, executive director of the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association, remarked: “We observe kids hacking Lime bikes, but how long until surfing atop a Waymo becomes the latest TikTok sensation?”

McNamara maintains a calm demeanor: “This proposes a solution to a problem we don’t currently have. These vehicles may be performing excellently in San Francisco and Los Angeles, but London is unlike anywhere else. I’d like someone to elucidate how this self-driving car intends to navigate streets like Charing Cross Road at 11 p.m., where pedestrians are continually crossing.” [sensor] “When you’re on top of a Waymo, you know it will stop, so you just get out or disembark.”

Christian Wolmer, author of *Driverless Cars: On a Road to Nowhere*, echoes this skepticism, stating: “There are no pedestrian crossing rules in this environment. If Google expects adherence to pedestrian crossing norms for cars…”

Despite the experiences in the U.S., he staunchly doubts that fully autonomous taxis will hit the streets here next year, asserting: “Unless a human operator is present, the likelihood of that happening is zero.”

Waymo revealed its London plans partly to mitigate any surprise over test vehicles on the roads, initiating a lengthier mapping initiative. They feel emboldened after a self-driving trial spanning approximately 100 meters in San Francisco, which is a far from orderly or flat city, in addition to over a dozen other trials.

Carriers have long argued that regulation trumps technological hurdles. Even swift progress has limitations. The consultation’s outcome, which wrapped up last month, should pave the way for the pilot program, though confirmation is still pending.

While this may have spurred Waymo’s plans, transforming the testing program to operational vehicles still involves numerous challenges with the Department for Transport and Transport for London, indicating that broader legislation may take at least another two years to enact. Insurers have particularly raised concerns regarding liability in these scenarios.

Previous pre-legislative testing frameworks stalling other innovative transport modalities, such as electric scooters, are currently set to persist for eight years. Tony Travers, a professor at the London School of Economics, posits that self-driving cars may be more favorably received: “They will have to abide by regulations. Sure, they might contribute to congestion, but they’re not likely to induce chaos like electric scooters have.”

However, even with the arrival of driverless taxis, one might wonder, “So what?” suggests Walmer.

According to Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana, the answer lies in the fact that their vehicles are “reliable, safe, and magical,” with an emphasis on safety. Up to now, Waymo cars have been involved in a fewer number of accidents compared to human-driven vehicles over equivalent distances.

They also aim to provide a new form of autonomy to those previously lacking it. The Royal Institute for Blind People praised the Waymo announcement as the inception of “technology that allows for safe, spontaneous, autonomous movement.”

Waymo stated that its entrance into the UK market would entail investments in warehouses, infrastructure for charging, cleaning services, support teams, and would temporarily employ “human experts” in the driver’s position.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has mentioned that the upcoming self-driving car revolution could generate 38,000 job opportunities within the UK.

However, it is professional drivers who face the greatest threat. Approximately 300,000 individuals hold private hire licenses, with an additional million expected to be in roles related to HGV and delivery services moving forward. Many of the UK’s 82,000 bus drivers have recently secured significant pay rises, while its 27,000 train operators are well-regarded for their labor efforts.

Consequently, surveys indicate that public sentiment in Britain is cautiously optimistic regarding self-driving vehicles, primarily stemming from fears surrounding job displacement due to artificial intelligence, even if human jobs haven’t been entirely eradicated yet.

Licensing and legal clarifications are still pending. McNamara expressed hope: “Who will grant approval? If I aimed to become a successful politician, I wouldn’t add my signature to that document.”

The leading cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S. estimates that cyber attacks compromising account information for a “small subset” of users will incur costs ranging from $180 million to $400 million. Coinbase noted that this estimate does not factor in the $20 million ransom demanded by hackers, which the firm opted not to pay.

As the largest platform for cryptocurrency transactions in the United States, Coinbase reported that while attackers accessed sensitive information like names, addresses, and emails, they did not acquire login credentials or passwords. Nevertheless, the company is refunding customers who were tricked into sending funds to the attackers.

The hackers engaged various contractors and employees based outside the U.S. to extract information from internal systems. In response, Coinbase promptly terminated the implicated employee.


Furthermore, Coinbase has also declined to pay the ransom and is actively collaborating with law enforcement. Instead, they have offered a $20 million reward for information regarding the perpetrator.

“We are committed to investigating this case, enhancing security measures, and providing reimbursements to affected customers instead of funding criminal activities,” the company stated in its blog post.

On May 11, the company received an email from an unidentified threat actor claiming to possess information about certain customer accounts and internal documents. This revelation comes just days before Coinbase is poised to enter the Benchmark S&P 500 Index, representing a historic milestone in the cryptocurrency sector.

Security remains a significant issue for the cryptocurrency industry. In February, BYBIT, the second-largest cryptocurrency exchange globally, disclosed that an attacker had stolen approximately $1.5 billion worth of digital tokens.

MUCH reflects on the remarkable journey of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a standout role-playing game crafted by a small team. (We recently hit 2 million sales.) This narrative is captivating amidst a landscape dominated by blockbuster flops, live service titles, and exorbitant budgets. The dedicated team has produced something lengthy, unique, and beautiful, priced at £40, leading to a win-win scenario for all involved. However, it’s not entirely accurate.

Sandfall Interactive, the French studio behind the game, comprises around 30 talented individuals. As noted by Rock Paper Shotgun, the credits list more contributors, from Korean animation teams to outsourced quality assurance testers, localization specialists, and performance artists who bring the game’s narrative and emotional depth to life.

When compared to the massive teams behind Final Fantasy titles (the clear inspiration for Sandfall), the comparatively small collective that developed Clair Obscur is noteworthy. What’s even more intriguing is that this small team has fashioned an exquisite French creation that resonates with us all. To the distress of my partner, I opted for the French voice acting with English subtitles to amplify my immersive experience.

Set in the Belle Époque-inspired realm of Clair Obscur, players encounter a foreboding entity known as Paintress Daubs, who has traversed ominous totem numbers annually, descending from a population of 100. (This game and Neva are the only titles in recent memory that have brought tears to my eyes. The beginning.) As the game counts down from 34 to 33, a courageous, slightly magical 30th expedition embarks towards a continent laden with sedatives, facing death in their quest to halt the cycle. The city is stunning, and everyone is dressed immaculately. Also, nothing seemingly poses a threat every few moments.

Many expeditions have previously faced this fate. As you navigate, you encounter gruesome remnants of these journeys, alongside their recorded accounts left to assist future travelers. Beginning in a ravaged Paris, the distorted Eiffel Tower looms over a picturesque Dali-esque horizon. The game feels like a waltz through a renowned museum on the brink of being engulfed by a black hole. One notable area is a desolate sea, featuring the wreck of a previous expedition, entwined with the carcass of a leviathan, adorned with waves of seaweed fluttering in the absent currents. It’s breathtaking but perilous. You must swiftly master a complex battle system and survive the initial boss encounters.

Clair Obscur’s combat draws inspiration from both classic and contemporary Japanese RPGs. Dynamic and vibrant, you can charge fireballs and time your dodges against the flailing fists of stone automatons. Combining uniquely distinctive character skills is vital. One character wields a rapier, shifting stances with every strike, while another engages with an enigmatic system of Sun and Moon Tarot cards. If this all seems excessively luxurious, it is — and I relish it. The battle menu is a Tinker’s dream, allowing for the development of esoteric powers and skills to create captivating combo attacks.

What captivates me most about this game is its uniqueness; it doesn’t mimic any other title. While most games riff on a handful of predictable franchises: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Marvel, this game sources inspiration from an entirely different aesthetic and theme pool. It emerges as a Baroque fantasy, a tale encompassing existentialism, love, death, and heritage — articulated through a European narrative style with Japanese-inspired action and artistry. Although it plays differently, its peculiar characteristics evoke memories of last year’s outstanding title, Repantazio. (There seems to be a notable connection between intellectually ambitious RPGs and perplexing names.)

Clair Obscur further exemplifies the impressive capabilities of game development tools available today. If you’re curious how a small team achieved this high-end aesthetic, that constitutes a significant part of the explanation. It instills a sense of optimism regarding the future of mid-tier game development, nestled between blockbusters and indie projects. Many of the most intriguing titles emerged in the early 2000s and 2010s. Perhaps some larger publishers consider this approach to be overly French, but Sandfall has successfully produced it nonetheless. Expedition 33 serves not only as a noteworthy commercial triumph but also as a beacon of creativity in the gaming sphere.

This is a fantastic idea, reminding me of an attempt I made ages ago as an IGN podcast, though I can’t recall its name. Was it “press the push”? “Save Points”? LFG? For such groups, I lean towards shorter games (so everyone can participate). I’d be thrilled to discuss Neva for its environmental themes and parenting narratives or Life is Strange for its rich, intricate storytelling with supernatural elements, or even a variety of games like While I’m Waiting, which prompted profound thoughts. This would surely be more engaging than merely debating whether Assassin’s Creed is relevant.

Severe Heat Waves and Droughts Hit Eurasia Back-to-Back

Over the past two decades, from the grain stores of Ukraine to towns in northern China, Eurasia has experienced a notable increase in droughts following extreme heat events. Tree ring analysis extending back nearly three centuries indicates that human-induced climate change is a significant factor in the acceleration of these combined catastrophes.

This phenomenon presents a severe threat due to the way heat and drought reinforce each other. Elevated temperatures deplete soil moisture, and droughts further reduce the humidity needed to mitigate the impact of subsequent heat waves. This harmful cycle contributes to decreased agricultural productivity and a heightened risk of wildfires.

Certain regions in Eurasia have encountered similar heat and drought patterns in the past, but researchers assert, “current developments exceed natural fluctuations,” according to Hans Linderholm, a researcher at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

The complete landscape became apparent only after Linderholm and his team compiled tree ring data covering Eurasia from 1741, which reflects temperature and precipitation variations. This allowed them to recreate a comprehensive distribution of high- and low-pressure systems that influence wet and dry conditions across the continent.

Researchers identified specific phenomena affecting the area, termed the “heatwave motion train of iolarism,” which has intensified since 2000, amplifying anomalies beyond historical measurements. This alteration is associated with atmospheric pressure changes prompted by warming in the North Atlantic and increased precipitation in some regions of North Africa, both linked to anthropogenic climate change.

Rising local temperatures can directly worsen extreme heat and drought situations. However, new research indicates that climate change is modifying the dynamics between distant atmospheric regions (referred to as teleconnections), further complicating the situation, Linderholm explains.

Climate model forecasts predict worsening conditions under all scenarios except for those with the lowest emissions. “We observe a distinct, robust trend in this new teleconnection pattern, suggesting that impacts will escalate in both speed and severity,” states Linderholm.

“It is difficult to envision how [the most affected regions will] recover,” he concludes.

Two Theories of Consciousness Conflict: The Referee Took a Major Hit.

While the nature of consciousness may remain elusive, neuroscientists have made significant strides in understanding it. The journey is far from over.

“Numerous theories exploring consciousness exist, so further theories may be superfluous,” states Oscar Ferrante, a neuroscientist at the University of Birmingham.

If you seek an explanation for how our brains create subjective experiences, you might explore adaptive resonance theory or dynamic core theory. Additionally, the theory of primary expression and semantic pointer competition should not be overlooked. A 2021 survey identified 29 distinct theories of consciousness.

Dr. Ferrante is part of a group aiming to consolidate this proliferation of theories. Yet, they face challenges due to the typical approach scientists take towards consciousness studies. They propose theories, conduct experiments, gather evidence, and often claim their theory reigns supreme.

“We are discouraged from abandoning our ideas,” remarked Lucia Meloni, a neuroscientist at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt, Germany.

Seven years ago, Dr. Meloni and 41 other scientists launched an extensive study on consciousness to break this cycle. Their goal was to unite rival groups to design an experiment that would assess the predictive power of both theories regarding conscious experiences in the brain.

The Cogitate Consortium team recently published their findings in Nature. However, this study encountered the same contentious conflicts they aimed to avoid.

Dr. Meloni and like-minded colleagues started planning their research in 2018, adopting a strategy known as hostile collaboration—where scientists with opposing theories partner with neutral researchers. They selected two theories for examination.

The first, known as the Global Neuronal Workspace Theory, was introduced in the early 2000s by Collège de France’s Stanislas Dehaene. This theory posits that our conscious experiences arise when key brain areas distribute sensory information across the brain.

The second theory, Integrated Information Theory, developed by the University of Wisconsin’s Giulio Tononi, does not link consciousness to specific brain regions. Instead, it begins with essential characteristics of conscious experience, such as feeling unique and possessing rich, coherent details. Madeleine.

Researchers then examined which physical networks, such as the brain, could facilitate this experience. They concluded that a substantial amount of information must be processed across various networks and integrated to form a cohesive experience.

The Cogitate Consortium’s experiment aimed to potentially test both theories, garnering support from proponents of both.

“This collaboration was significant as it was the first attempt to reconcile differences rather than engage in isolated pursuits,” noted Dr. Meloni.

However, they knew that hostile collaboration would require substantial effort. They enlisted many young researchers, including Dr. Ferrante, and spent two years designing experiments and setting up lab equipment. By the latter half of 2020, they began scanning the brains of 267 volunteers across eight labs in the US, Europe, and China.

Volunteers played video games designed to gauge their conscious perception. In one game, participants were tasked with catching a colored disc when it changed to striped. Occasionally, blurred faces appeared on the screen, prompting volunteers to indicate what they had noticed.

To capture data comprehensively, researchers employed three distinct methods to measure brain activity.

Some volunteers who had undergone surgery for epilepsy consented to have electrodes temporarily placed in their brains. The second group utilized fMRI to assess blood flow in the brain, while a third group underwent magnetic EEG testing to record the brain’s magnetic field.

By 2022, the researchers shifted focus to data analysis. The three techniques produced consistent results. Both theories made accurate predictions regarding brain activity during conscious experiences, but also had incorrect predictions.

“Both theories are incomplete,” remarked Dr. Ferrante.

In June 2023, Dr. Meloni presented the findings at a New York conference, and the Cogitate Consortium submitted their results for publication, hoping to see their work in print.

Hakwan Lau, a neuroscientist at Sungkyunkwan University, was invited to review the paper but made a critical assessment. He believed the consortium failed to clearly outline where in the brain they would test predictions for each theory.

“Making a compelling case that the project tests theories meaningfully is challenging,” Dr. Lau stated in a July review.

Having developed his own consciousness theory, Dr. Lau published an evaluation online in August, and later co-authored an open letter criticizing both the Cogitate experiments and Integrated Information Theory. A total of 124 experts endorsed the letter.

The group labeled “IIT agree” directed much of its critique at integrated information theory, calling it pseudoscience in a recent analysis.

Critics highlighted that Integrated Information Theory extends beyond just a brain function theory—implying that a system capable of integrating information, even a plant, may possess some level of consciousness.

Critics contended that the Cogitate Consortium’s experiment failed to address the foundational aspects of the theory, thereby not adequately challenging its claims. “As researchers, we must safeguard the public from scientific misinformation,” Dr. Lau and his colleagues asserted.

Their letter, published online in September 2023, ignited a flurry of debate on social media. The authors later provided a commentary to elucidate their concerns, which was featured the following month in Nature Neuroscience.

In response, Dr. Tononi and his colleagues, in a published letter defended IIT, claiming that the critics’ letters were “full of enthusiasm and lacking in facts,” and asserting that the new commentary merely aimed to reshape the discussion.

Meanwhile, the Cogitate Consortium paper continued through the peer review process. Upon its release on Wednesday, it drew a spectrum of responses.

Anil Seth, a neuroscientist at the University of Sussex, expressed admiration for the study’s scale and the identification of shortcomings in both theories. “I’m pleased to see that,” he remarked. “That’s an impressive achievement.”

However, some critics of IIT continued to voice concerns. Joel Snyder, a psychologist at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, noted that the predictions from each team might have been generated by alternative theories, indicating the experiment wasn’t a true test of either.

“This is likely to cause confusion,” Dr. Snyder commented.

Dr. Lau reflected in an email that the recent research does not appear to have narrowed down the numerous theories of consciousness. “Recent discussions leave me with the impression that these issues haven’t significantly advanced any theory,” he wrote.

Nonetheless, Dr. Seth acknowledged the value of testing competing theories, even if scientists are reluctant to discard their ideas. “The best outcome of a successful hostile collaboration is that it may lead others to reconsider their views,” he stated.

Nvidia has announced that it is expecting a $5.5 billion (£4.1 billion) impact following the ban imposed by Donald Trump’s administration on chip designers selling crucial artificial intelligence chips in China.

In an official statement released late Tuesday, the company disclosed that the H20 AI chip, specifically tailored for the Chinese market to comply with export regulations, will now require a special license for sale in China indefinitely.

The US government, engaged in a competition with China for AI supremacy, informed Nvidia that new regulations have been enacted to mitigate the risk of their products being utilized in Chinese supercomputers.

As a result, the chip manufacturer is set to incur $5.5 billion in losses for the financial quarter ending on April 27th due to its investment in H20 chips.

Nvidia, known for driving significant advancements in AI technology, has delivered substantial returns for investors, with its stock surging over 1,400% since 2020, making it one of the few trillion-dollar companies in the US.

However, the news on Tuesday caused Nvidia’s stock to fall by approximately 6% in after-hours trading, potentially wiping out billions of dollars in market value by Wednesday’s opening bell.

In Asia, chipmakers like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix from South Korea saw a 3% decline in their stocks overnight, while US competitors like senior equity microdevices dropped by 7% in after-hours trading.

Although the chip industry has been exempt from the 10% tariff that began on April 5th, Trump indicated this week that he plans to impose tariffs on imported semiconductors and mentioned that some companies in this sector may have flexibility.

The US Department of Commerce has recently launched an investigation into the impact of chip and drug imports on national security.

The US heavily relies on chip imports from Taiwan, with Trump previously imposing a 32% tariff on products from the country before suspending most tariffs last week.

Meteoroids hit Mars more often than previously believed

A recent study indicates that the impact rate on Mars may be two to ten times higher than previously thought, depending on the size of the meteorite.

“Mars may be more geologically active than previously believed, which could have implications for the age and evolution of its surface,” stated Dr. Ingrid Dover of Brown University.

“Our findings, although based on a limited number of examples, suggest that current estimates of the impact rate on planets are much higher than what can be observed from images alone.”

Dr. Dauber and his team utilized sensitive seismometers on NASA’s InSight lander to discover eight new impact craters caused by meteorites that were previously unknown from orbit.

The frequency of these cosmic impacts challenges existing notions of how frequently meteorites collide with the Martian surface and indicates the need to revise current Martian crater models to accommodate higher impact rates, particularly from smaller meteorites.

This revelation has the potential to reshape our understanding of the Martian surface and the impact history not only of Mars but of other planets as well, as the Martian surface continues to be shaped by small meteorite impacts.

“This will necessitate a reassessment of the models used by the scientific community to estimate the ages of planetary surfaces across the solar system,” Dr. Dover added.

Of the craters discovered, six were in close proximity to the stationary InSight lander’s location.

“It’s possible it’s a mere coincidence, but the likelihood of that is slim.”

This clip was uploaded in 2021 by a person named Carl92 who wanted to see if anyone could identify it. “I don’t remember its origins,” he wrote on his site called WatZatSong, adding, “I found it among a bunch of very old files on a DVD backup… it feels kind of nostalgic.” But even after this 17-second sample of his was posted on his Reddit, a powerful pop culture spirit is rarely lost, not a single person was able to identify the song or the artist.

This quest captured people’s imaginations.
