Many of us find joy in liberally using profanity. Why? Because it feels satisfying. Recent scientific findings have validated this common behavior, thanks to a new study conducted by researchers at Keele University in the UK.
The research indicates that swearing can enhance physical performance and lead to better results in strength and endurance tests.
According to Dr. Richard Stevens, who spearheaded the study: BBC Science Focus, “This study essentially confirms what we consider common sense: swearing when we need to can elevate our mood.” He described swearing as a “low-cost, easily accessible, non-drug self-help strategy.”
To explore this phenomenon, the research team performed two experiments involving 192 participants. During the first experiment, each volunteer shouted an expletive every two seconds while doing push-ups (raising their body using only their arms) on a chair.
Participants also completed the same task using neutral words instead. Some began with swearing, while others started with neutral terms.
The results were significant. Those who swore were able to maintain their weight support for longer periods.
Stevens attributes this enhancement in performance to people feeling less constrained when they swear. “You become more uninhibited, you push past your hesitations and go all out instead of holding back,” he explains.
This effect was later confirmed through a post-test questionnaire, showing that participants reported higher levels of “psychological flow” when swearing—a state where they were fully engaged and enjoying the activity.

“This paper builds on research from the 1960s indicating that shouting, loud sounds, alcohol, and similar stimuli enhance physical performance. It suggests that reducing inhibitions can boost fitness,” Stevens remarked.
But what is it about profanity that gives it such power? Stevens posits that it “must relate to their taboo nature.” He noted that many curse words are “double taboos,” meaning they aren’t just socially unacceptable, but often touch on other sensitive subjects, such as sex.
The research team plans to delve deeper into the influence of a word’s taboo nature by examining its effects on pain tolerance. Essentially, they’re searching for the ultimate swear word with the greatest impact.
For now, you might be wondering if you should incorporate more swearing into your life. According to science, the answer is affirmative.
“Our findings indicate that swearing diminishes inhibition and enhances performance, suggesting that this effect may extend to other scenarios where success relies on overcoming hesitation,” Stevens stated.
“Using curse words strategically during challenging moments, especially when we’re outside our comfort zone, can help us unlock our full potential and ultimately achieve greater success.”

The S25 Edge represents a fascinating direction for Samsung. Many users might wish for slimmer, longer-lasting devices with better cameras. Most tend to use cases, quickly negating slight differences in thickness that premium models boast.
However, using the Edge brought attention to just how bulky modern large phones can feel. It offers a remarkably light experience, whether cradled in hand or stashed in a pocket, all while featuring a substantial high-resolution display. These may seem like whimsical fantasies, but they are actually part of a genre known as “vertical drama.” This innovative format for episodic television has captured the attention of millions of people worldwide.
Originating from China, the genre, often referred to as “Tiktok generation television,” consists of short episodes designed for viewing on smartphones. By 2027, the market for vertical drama is expected to reach a value of $14 billion (£11 billion).
“The growth of this genre signifies a demand among audiences that is not being met by the current media landscape,” explains Zhou Yuan, the founder of content Republic, a Beijing-based vertical film production company, as reported in a recent interview with a Hong Kong cinema.
Micro-dramas, known as Duanjus in Chinese, have made a significant impact on the Chinese audiovisual market before expanding globally, transforming the industry. Chinese companies are collaborating with foreign production firms to export this format, supported by a range of new streaming apps such as Reelshort, ShorttV, Dramapops, and FlextV.
In November of last year, California-based Reel Short, backed by Chinese investors, surpassed Tiktok as the most popular entertainment product in the Apple App Store in the US.
“Some skeptics questioned the willingness of audiences to pay for this content,” remarked Joey Jia, the CEO of Crazy Maple Studio, the company behind Reelshort, in an interview with the Washington Post.

“Last April, during a challenging personal time, I found it difficult to focus on full-length dramas,” Cooper shared. “One day, I stumbled upon a vertical drama ad on Tiktok that piqued my interest.”
She delved into her first vertical drama, a captivating tale of a woman torn between her ex and uncle, titled “You Belong With Me.” “It embodies classic themes but at its core, it’s a beautiful love story with genuinely entertaining moments,” she remarked.
Cooper fell down the rabbit hole, creating an Instagram account to share reviews, connecting with industry insiders, and fostering a community of enthusiasts. The response was overwhelming, with over 16,000 votes from around the globe within a week of launching a fan award.
She discovered that many individuals turned to vertical dramas during challenging periods in their lives. “I’ve heard stories from family members, fans battling serious health issues or caring for loved ones. The audience ranges from women in their early 20s to their 60s. I’ve spoken to a Pakistani student, an elderly Italian woman bedridden, and a mother who lost her husband while doing household chores,” she shared.
The universal appeal lies in escapism, offering a quick dose of dopamine when life becomes overwhelming. “People yearn for satisfying outcomes, and let’s be honest, who doesn’t enjoy seeing incredibly attractive individuals fall in love?
Defne Turan, a production manager at London’s Seastar Productions, believes that vertical drama is the way forward.
She noted a surge in interest from filmmakers and actors eager to be part of this burgeoning genre. “It’s a new frontier, and we must approach it with the same level of care as traditional productions. Just because it’s different and fast-paced doesn’t mean we compromise on quality,” she emphasized. “We utilize industry-standard equipment, and many experienced production crews and makeup artists from major productions are involved.”

Teig Sadana, a 29-year-old Australian British actor based in New York, transitioned to vertical dramas after completing his studies at Stella Adler Studios.
“I responded to a rather standard acting job ad on a website, not fully comprehending what ‘vertical’ entailed. I needed the paycheck,” he admitted. After a brief conversation with the supervisor, he found himself on set a few days later filming “Glory of Pennsylvania’s Revenge.”

The source of the newly detected fast radio burst, FRB 20240209A, is located 2 billion light-years from Earth, on the remote outskirts of an ancient elliptical galaxy with a mass of more than 100 billion solar masses. The remnants of young stars that theorists believe would generate such bursts of radio waves should have long died out in this 11.3 billion-year-old galaxy are detailed in two supplementary studies. Astrophysics Journal Letter this discovery shatters the assumption that fast radio bursts emanate only from regions of active star formation.

“The conventional wisdom is that fast radio bursts (FRBs) originate from magnetars formed by collapsing supernovae,” said Taraneh Eftekari, an astronomer at Northwestern University.
“That doesn’t seem to be the case here. Young, massive stars die out as core-collapse supernovae, but we see no evidence of young stars in this galaxy.”
“Thanks to this new discovery, it is becoming clear that not all Feds are born from young stars.”

After the research team located the FRB, astronomers quickly used telescopes at W.M. Keck and Gemini Observatories to study the environment surrounding the event.
Surprisingly, rather than discovering young galaxies, these observations revealed that the FRB’s origin lies 2 billion light-years from Earth, at the edge of a neighboring galaxy 11.3 billion years ago.
To learn more about this unusual host galaxy, the researchers used high-performance computers to run simulations.
They discovered that this galaxy is extremely bright and incredibly huge – 100 billion times the mass of our Sun.
“This appears to be the most massive FRB host galaxy ever. It’s one of the most massive galaxies out there,” Dr. Eftekari said.
Although most FRBs occur inside galaxies, the authors tracked FRB 20240209A to the outskirts of its homeworld, 130,000 light-years away from the galaxy’s center, where there are few other stars.
“Of all the FRB populations, this FRB is the furthest from the center of its host galaxy,” said Vishwangi Shah, a graduate student at McGill University.
“This is both surprising and interesting because FRBs are expected to occur inside galaxies, often in star-forming regions.”
“The location of this FRB so far outside its host galaxy raises the question of how such an energetic event could occur in a region where new stars are not forming.”
According to the research team, FRB 20240209A likely originated within a dense globular cluster.
Such clusters are promising sites for magnetars that may have formed through other mechanisms, such as the merger of two neutron stars or the collapse of a white dwarf star under its own gravity, or in conjunction with older stars.
“The globular cluster origin of this repeating FRB is the most likely scenario explaining why this FRB is located outside of its host galaxy,” Shah said.
“Although we do not know for a fact whether there is a globular cluster at the FRB’s location, we have submitted a proposal to use NASA/ESA/CSA’s James Webb Space Telescope for follow-up observations of the FRB’s location.”
“If so, this FRB would be only the second FRB known to exist within a globular cluster. If not, consider other exotic scenarios for the origin of FRBs. You will need to.”
“It’s clear that there is still a lot of interesting discovery to be made about the Fed, and that its environment may hold the key to unlocking its secrets,” Dr. Eftekari said.

As a result, there is ongoing investigation into legal methods and substances commonly used by professional athletes that may face bans in the future.
1. Carbon monoxide rebreathing
With more than 100 deaths annually in the UK due to carbon monoxide poisoning, the use of carbon monoxide rebreathing in sports science may raise eyebrows. However, this method is commonly used to measure hemoglobin levels in athletes.

Fossil and molecular evidence suggests that complex multicellular organisms arose and proliferated during the Neoproterozoic Era (1-541 million years ago). An extreme glacial period during the Cryogenian Period (720-635 million years ago), an event commonly referred to as Snowball Earth, led to dramatic changes in Earth's climate and oceans. New research suggests that Snowball Earth was an environmental trigger for the proliferation of complex multicellularity across multiple groups of eukaryotic organisms.

Solving the mystery of why multicellular organisms emerged could help pinpoint life on other planets and explain the enormous diversity and complexity seen on Earth today, from marine sponges to redwoods to human societies.
The prevailing thinking is that oxygen levels must reach a certain threshold for a single cell to form a multicellular colony.
However, the oxygen story does not fully explain why the multicellular ancestors of animals, plants and fungi emerged simultaneously, or why the transition to multicellularity took more than a billion years.
The new study shows how the specific physical conditions of Snowball Earth, particularly the viscosity of the oceans and the depletion of resources, may have led eukaryotes to become multicellular.
“It seems almost counterintuitive that these extremely harsh conditions – this frozen planet – could actually select for larger, more complex organisms, rather than causing species to become extinct or shrink in size,” said William Crockett, a doctoral student at MIT.
Using scaling theory, Crockett and his colleagues found that a hypothetical ancestor of early animals, reminiscent of swimming algae that fed on prey instead of photosynthesizing, would have grown in size and complexity under Snowball Earth pressures.
In contrast, single-celled organisms that move and feed by diffusion, such as bacteria, will grow small.
“The world changed after Snowball Earth because new life forms emerged on the planet,” said Professor Christopher Kemps of the Santa Fe Institute.
“One of the central questions of evolution is: How did we evolve from nothing on Earth to beings and societies like us? Was it all by chance?”
“We don't think it's luck. There are ways to predict these big changes.”
The study shows how, during the Snowball Earth era, the oceans froze, blocking sunlight and reducing photosynthesis, which resulted in nutrient depletion in the oceans.
Larger organisms that could process more water were more likely to eat enough to survive.
As the glaciers melt, these large creatures could expand even further.
“Our study provides hypotheses about ancestral features to look for in the fossil record,” Crockett said.

To detect this extremely faint signal, DSS-43 and Voyager 2’s transmitters use narrowband, high-frequency signals that are highly directional and transmitted at slow bit rates.
Advanced signal processing techniques, minimal interference, and the fact that radio signals can travel through space with little obstruction allow DSS-43 to overcome long distances.
The antenna can transmit a signal to Voyager 2 at a much higher power level (up to about 400,000 watts) than it receives. This strong output can be easily picked up by the spacecraft even at far distances.

“The NME effect implies a link between specific properties of materials (magnetization and polarization) and various field components of light and other electromagnetic waves,” lead author Shadi Safaei Jaji et al. said.
Although this effect is negligible in natural materials, scientists are looking to enhance it using metamaterials and metasurfaces because of the technological possibilities it unlocks.
“So far, the NME effect has not translated into practical industrial applications,” Jazio said.
“Most of the proposed approaches only work for microwaves, not visible light, and could not be manufactured with available technology.”
