Introducing Gen X: How the Internet’s Toxicity Has Fueled Anger and Radicalization Among Middle-Aged People

IThis might come off as unusual, but discussing the weather was common for us. If not that, we tend to contemplate the trivial exchanges with strangers we encounter daily, like musing over the train delays or commenting on a baby’s cuteness. However, the nature of our public conversations appears to be shifting.

Recently, while at Aldi, I engaged in the typical small talk at the checkout. When the cashier mentioned her fatigue from extra shifts to save for Christmas, a man behind me chimed in, suggesting that things would worsen if “she took all our money” (in case you’re curious, Rachel Reeves is definitely pushing her budget agenda). It seemed ordinary, until he proceeded to speak about how she and the government should go out, hinting at ex-military men who supposedly knew what to do, before escalating into graphic commentary until the line quieted down. What struck me was how calmly he articulated these thoughts, as if political violence had become just another acceptable topic for casual chats, akin to football or construction updates. It dawned on me later that this was a conversation drawn straight from Facebook, transposed into reality, where he voiced what’s often casually expressed online, seemingly unaware that such remarks can still shock in public—at least for now.

I recalled this encounter when Health Secretary Wes Streeting noted that NHS staff from ethnic minorities are facing a resurgence of openly expressed racism, a reflection of broader societal trends. Streeting’s remarks highlighted not only blatant racism but a general loss of decorum that transcends hospital waiting rooms. This atmosphere is palpable even at a bus stop, where a simple query about Route 44’s new schedule can pivot to wild theories about chemtrails and surveillance. Similarly, innocent conversations at school gates can reveal surprising and bizarre beliefs among seemingly normal parents regarding vaccines.

One of my friends dubs this phenomenon “sauna politics,” drawing from the bizarre and conspiratorial discussions he overheard at a local sauna. But whatever the name, it feels as though individuals are now externalizing their inner dialogues—thoughts they previously hesitated to voice publicly, sometimes even hiding them from themselves. After all, people can state such ideas online without a second glance. What, I wonder, is the equivalent of a young man attempting something he saw in online adult content with his girlfriend, only to be baffled when it fails? This time, however, the culprits are more likely confused teenagers than parents, grappling with the rapid dissolution of online social norms and a resurgence of slurs they haven’t heard aloud since their youth.

Midlife radicalization, which might seem paradoxical, counters stereotypes of stagnation. In our minds, if not others’, Gen Xers have been seen as the cultural peacekeepers. Too old to be labeled reactionary yet too young to be in the thick of it, we’ve inhabited this Goldilocks zone of moderation. Nevertheless, something appears to have transpired among those encountering midlife crises. Gen Xers now fear the world is evolving beyond their grasp. We worry about job security, marital stability post-children, whether our ideas are antiquated, and if we’re the subject of ridicule behind closed doors. While many navigate this phase without succumbing to political upheaval, some do seek release for their frustrations and disenchantment with unmet life expectations.

Populist insurrections now seem fueled by Generation X, rather than embittered retirees or teenagers swayed by right-wing propaganda. Only 19% of those in their 50s in the UK voted for British Reform. Surprisingly, one-third of those aged 50 to 64 would likely do the same now, marking a swift shift for the “Cool Britannia” generation that once propelled Tony Blair into office, according to YouGov—pivotal for propelling the party from fringe to mainstream. In the US, Generation X is known for being the demographic most inclined to identify as Republicans.

Still, with few exceptions such as the smidge project – a three-year international study on the dissemination of conspiracy theories and misinformation reveals an alarming lack of focus on understanding how 45 to 65-year-olds can be deradicalized, or how midlife minds react to the experiment of unregulated free speech.

My generation often believes we are immune to the influences of the online world, that we possess greater tech savvy than our parents, that we’re less fixated on TikTok than the youth, and that we can separate online discourse from reality. Yet, evidence suggests we struggle to compartmentalize more than we realize. Perhaps the only surprise is that it took this long for these boundaries to blur, given the thin fourth wall separating online and offline dialogues.

Introducing Anamanaguchi: The Band Behind the Soundtrack for the Latest Scott Pilgrim Game and More

S
Canadian author and cartoonist Brian Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel series,
Scott Pilgrim, weaves a narrative rich with pop culture. It explores the
themes of teenage angst, love, redemption, hubris, and pride, all while
providing a distinctly Canadian perspective on emo, indie rock, and shounen manga.
This coming-of-age tale follows an initially unlikable teen navigating
the 2000s across six graphic novels filled with clever nods to everything
from Japanese manga and Western superheroes to video games and Tintin.
Notably, it has also inspired a hit movie, a Netflix animated series in
2022, and a video game released in 2010, both of which featured music
by Anamanaguchi, an indie rock band based in New York City.

“My favorite scene in the Scott Pilgrim cartoon is when Knives and Kim
are just jamming in a room together and not much happens,” laughs
Peter Berkman, one of the band’s lead songwriters and guitarists.
“It really touched my heart. It’s not a joke.”

Anamanaguchi first gained recognition for their instrumental music
utilizing video game hardware, solidifying their place as pioneers in the
chiptune genre
while still in college. During their inaugural self-funded tour, Berkman
received an unexpected email from someone at Ubisoft.

“We got an email from someone working at Ubisoft about a video game for
a Universal IP tie-in, but they didn’t elaborate. We thought, ‘Maybe a
new Alien vs. Predator game or something along those lines?’ Regardless of
the particulars, we knew we’d want to take it to the band and say yes.
I’ve always loved game and movie soundtracks.” It turned out to be an
offer to compose music for the first Scott Pilgrim video game, released in 2010.

Currently, Anamanaguchi is experiencing a resurgence. When the game
was re-released as a complete edition in 2022, the band launched the
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: Game Soundtrack Tour. Last year, they
composed and performed music for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, a Netflix
spinoff that offers a meta-commentary on Scott’s life. This year,
they supported Hatsune Miku at the Fortnite Festival, showcasing their
long-standing connection to the realms of video games and live music
while releasing their first album in six years, titled Anyway, in August.
This album presents an intriguing alt-rock interpretation of their signature
synth bass sounds, still echoing their 8-bit influences. They are also
in the process of creating the soundtrack for the upcoming Scott Pilgrim
game, another engaging fighting game set to launch next year.

One segment of the band is delving into analog sounds and alternative rock angst,
while another group is rejuvenating their connection to Scott Pilgrim.
“Working on the soundtrack for the new game Scott Pilgrim EX revealed how we can adjust
our record world, further embracing the soundtrack style suited for the game,” Berkman shared.

Berkman noted that in the 15 years since their last collaboration, the band has
evolved in how they approach music. They’ve gained experience as producers,
become “listeners of music,” and have an even broader appreciation for the
diverse styles within video game music.

“It’s vital to establish a connection between the player’s experience and the
narrative unfolding at that moment, even as an adversary,” Berkman elaborated.
“If the moment demands something dark, gothic, or industrial, we can deliver it.
The freedom to blend these elements in a way never done before is crucial.
[Scott Pilgrim EX developer Tribute Games] actually let me experiment with audio mixing.
The musical cues we desire are paramount to us. The way the music flows, the rhythm…
with video game soundtracks, it’s where you can truly feel the authorship.”

After experiencing the Scott Pilgrim EX demo, it’s evident that Tribute Games’
trust in the band has paid off. The music is lively and playful, cleverly bending
norms, creating prompts and expectations. The sound effects and motifs meld seamlessly
into the level’s texture. It evokes feelings reminiscent of Sea Power’s contributions
to Disco Elysium, despite the starkly different tones—pixel art, neon colors, and
the spirit of joyful adolescence.

“Tribute Games has afforded us a degree of freedom that is usually only granted
to companies that are still finding their footing,” Berkman chuckles. “Our involvement
in the development process has been refreshing compared to last time. Nightly builds
allow us to ask, ‘Is this stagnant? Do we need to add segments here?'” This level of
collaboration has deepened our understanding of arrangement and atmosphere.
This is the soundtrack we aspired to create.”

Introducing the Revenge Quitters: Why Workers are Walking Away and Refusing to Stay Silent

In 2011, Joey Lanev de Francesco spent nearly four years working in room service at a luxury hotel in Providence, Rhode Island, earning a mere $5.50 (£4) per hour. He endured long shifts that took a toll on him and reduced his hard-earned tips.

The inadequate treatment escalated when De Francesco and his coworkers attempted to unionize. The manager responded harshly, punishing employees for minor infractions. In fact, shift workers who needed to call guests were prohibited from sitting down.

De Francesco ultimately decided to resign. On his final day, he secretly entered the hotel staff quarters with a herd of seven powerful marching bands, surprising his boss with a musical farewell. “I’m here to tell you I’m not going,” he proclaimed, exiting while his band played triumphant tunes and chanted “Joey Quits.”

At 22 years old, De Francesco quickly enlisted friends to record the event. After sitting on the video for a few days, he uploaded it to YouTube, where it rapidly gained traction. Fast forward 13 years, and the video has garnered nearly 10 million views.

“We didn’t think it would gain much attention,” De Francesco, now 36 and living in New York, stated. The musician expressed feeling “liberated” after resigning and turning the tables on his manager. “Now, I’m ashamed of you for treating everyone so poorly,” he remarked.

Did his viral exit hinder his job prospects? Not at all. Shortly thereafter, De Francesco found work at a museum, noting that the incident “will never come up” in job interviews—perhaps even something worth adding to his resume.

De Francesco’s story remains iconic in the Hall of Fame of Resignation, but it faces stiff competition from a new wave of employees. More workers are staging revenge resignations, demonstrating their discontent with their workplaces. Even clergy members are partaking in this trend: In July, Father Pat Brennan delivered a “farewell gift” to his congregation in the form of a poem that doubled as his resignation letter, aiming to be an “uncomplaining, undesirable” parishioner who spread “gossip” using “holy lips.”

Employer review site Glassdoor warned at the end of last year about a “wave of revenge” shaping the future of employee satisfaction by 2025. A survey of 2,008 workers in the UK released in July revealed that 15% have left their jobs out of revenge. Social media has accelerated this trend, with many sharing their stories online. Brianna’s resignation video concluded with a rallying cry: “These companies will fire you in a day and leave nothing behind.

The 26-year-old American, living in Kyoto, Japan, was just two hours away from teaching his next English class when he quit. Initially, things were manageable, but it quickly changed. “If I finished a lesson a minute early or late, she’d become upset,” Slaughter recounted.

As Slaughter began to work, he found lots of free time, but his coworkers were mostly “cold,” and soon, problems began to arise. They earned 2,000 yen (£10) per class instead of hourly wages, forcing them to endure unpaid hours between classes for minimal compensation. Schedules were often given out just a day before, making planning nearly impossible. Due to the sedentary nature of the job, Slaughter developed health issues: “I went to the doctor, and they said, you’re sitting all the time, so you’re getting inflammation in your neck,” he noted.

Slaughter’s breaking point occurred with the arrival of a new manager, who insisted he wear long sleeves to cover his “aggressive tattoos” and often sat in on classes. It escalated to the point where Slaughter was crying every night. After receiving an unimpressive 100,000 yen (£500) for a month of “Hardcore Classroom Lessons” last May, he had had enough.

“If you want to leave, leave the baby”… Briana Slaughter on TikTok. Photo: TikTok

Slaughter sent his resignation letter into the digital ether before quickly recalling that a two-month notice was required. In a TikTok video that has amassed 1.2 million views, Slaughter addressed his manager:

Far from hindering their careers, these stories have gone viral, unlocking new opportunities. “I made $7,000 on TikTok in the month I left,” Slaughter remarked. Many reached out, expressing that his video inspired them to leave their toxic workplaces: “They said: I think I’ll quit my job too. This was my sign.” For those undecided, Slaughter advised:

Younger generations are more likely to execute revenge resignations. A report revealed that 26% of individuals aged 18-34 and 22% of those aged 35-44 in the UK have done so, compared to just 8% of people aged 45-54. In June, a survey by the Business Research Group found a 15% difference in this regard between younger and older workers in the United States.

Four years ago, 25-year-old Carly, residing in Alabama, was jobless. After contacting a temp agency, she was immediately offered a receptionist position based solely on her resume, with instructions to start the next day. “It might not have been the ideal job, but I was desperate, so I accepted,” she reflected.

The initial three months were “wonderful,” leading to a promotion as the HR pay manager, but things soon took a downturn. A new colleague aligned with the boss began to spread false rumors that Carly was an alcoholic due to her use of a lamp instead of overhead lights in her office. “I liked the ambiance,” she noted.

Carly was soon assigned additional duties as an accounts payable manager. “It was too much for a 21-year-old to handle alone,” she explained. The company briefly hired a man who was paid $10 more per hour than her to assist, but he was fired after mishandling payroll. Carly was forced to juggle both roles once more.

“I was perpetually stressed, distressed, and crying,” she admitted. The situation reached a boiling point during a management meeting when a colleague expected her to “flap frustration” in front of everyone. “It was an absurd request,” she remarked. “He essentially aimed to bully me publicly,” but Carly had different plans.

On the day of the meeting, Carly awoke early, went to the office, and scheduled an email to all managers conveying, “Let them know how messed up their business is,” she stated. It began cautiously: “I decided it was time to pursue a different path,” but quickly escalated. She bluntly labeled one manager as “literally a rock” and mentioned that her heavy workload caused “daily stress that often culminated in anxiety attacks and tearful nights.” She concluded with, “My laptop and keys are on my desk.”

After hitting send, her boss attempted to call; Carly didn’t answer. “I never heard from them again,” she recounted. Upon leaving the office for the last time, she felt euphoric: “I could have stripped my clothes off and raced home naked. All my anxiety and stress melted away,” she claimed.

She quickly secured another job, although she had some reservations about future interviews. “If they ask, I’ll be honest. If you treat me well, I won’t do this to you,” Carly assured.

While most are no longer engaging in dramatic revenge resignations, some new workers may be motivated to share their own experiences. Katie Ostler left her job after two years at a supermarket in Melbourne, Australia, where she began working at 16. “It was a very toxic, high-pressure environment with significant sales,” she explained.

Now 29 and living in Manchester, UK, Ostler wasn’t concerned about her boss knowing her name for the first six months. “It wasn’t ideal, but I kept my head down and did what was required,” she expressed.

As she approached 18, new job opportunities, particularly in bars, opened up. When the toxic supermarket experience pushed her to the edge, she had already submitted her resume to a local pub. One day, a customer angrily yelled at one of Ostler’s 15-year-old colleagues over a refund. Rather than support the young employee, the manager sided with the customer and also shouted. “I decided it was time to leave,” she remarked.

Not long after, she received a bar job offer and went to the supermarket to submit her resignation during the mandatory week’s notice. Attempting to give her letter to the supervisor, she was directed to hand it directly to the manager, who was supposedly in an interview. After following the supervisor’s instructions on location, Ostler seized the opportunity. She delivered the letter and announced her departure. The room fell silent, and the interviewees stared at her in confusion. “It took a lot of courage. I left before my manager could respond,” she said.

That wasn’t the last she would hear from him. She received a call on her way to begin her new job, instructing her not to finish her final week because she “didn’t want my toxic energy” around the team. “I remember thinking, did you look in the mirror?” she recalled. She had to return to the supermarket several times for groceries. “I avoided it when possible, but people recognized me and said hello. Unfortunately, no one cheered for me when I entered,” she said. Nonetheless, the resignation felt empowering: “I felt like a boss. It was a very powerful moment.”

Introducing the Smart Pill: Enabling Doctors to Examine and Treat Your Intestines Internally.

Emerging technologies enable doctors to leverage microorganisms for diagnosing and treating diseases through gut microbiota. Recent studies highlight these advancements.

Researchers successfully used smartphone apps to genetically alter bacteria, causing them to emit light signals in response.

If proven safe and effective in humans, this treatment could address several illnesses that are currently challenging to manage.

This method encompassed three key elements: bacteria, technology, and pigs. Under the guidance of senior author Hanzi Wang from Tianjin University in China, scientists modified E. coli bacteria to react to specific chemical and optical stimuli.

They created swallowable capsules controlled via Bluetooth that communicate with these photoresponsive bacteria, targeting pigs afflicted with colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease that results in intestinal swelling.

The experiment has commenced, allowing scientists to introduce engineered E. coli into the inflamed intestines of pigs through these capsules.

Nitrates, which the body produces during intestinal inflammation, serve as indicators of active colitis. When the modified E. coli come into contact with nitrates, they illuminate.

These smart capsules can detect the optical signal, alerting researchers to the presence of E. coli via Bluetooth.

Through a smartphone app, researchers can command the capsule to start emitting light signals, prompting the E. coli to release anti-inflammatory antibodies to combat colitis.

This innovative approach enables scientists to effectively communicate with the bacteria, ensuring targeted treatment delivery.

“This represents a remarkable technological advancement,” stated Dr. Lindsey Edwards, a senior lecturer in Microbiology at King’s College London, as reported by BBC Science Focus. Dr. Edwards was not involved in the research.

“Methods like this enable precise, real-time interactions with gut bacteria and have the potential to revolutionize treatment,” she added.

“There is an urgent need for new tools that allow us to harness the full potential of our microbiota to enhance health and better understand and manage microbial infections.”

At present, colitis has no existing treatments, and options are scarce. Dr. Edwards believes that such future methods could “open new pathways” for treating not only inflammatory bowel disease but also other gut-related conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and chronic fatigue.

However, Dr. Alexandre Almeida, from the Department of Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge University and not part of this research, warns that this possibility is still distant.

“This is still a preliminary proof-of-concept study,” he noted. “The technology has only been tested in animals and specifically for detecting certain conditions.”

“Before human applications, we must evaluate the safety of this technology and address significant questions, such as how these engineered microorganisms influence the natural balance of other gut bacteria.”

Dr. Nicholas Ilott, a senior researcher at the Oxford Microbiome Research Center who did not participate in the study, stated that the technology is “incredibly exciting” and could prove to be “very valuable” in future medical treatments.

Introducing a Health Tracking System in Collaboration with Big Tech and the Trump Administration

The Trump administration is advancing initiatives encouraging millions of Americans to submit personal health data and medical records to new applications and systems managed by private tech firms, aiming to enhance the accessibility of health records and wellness monitoring.

Donald Trump is anticipated to announce the East Room initiative on Wednesday afternoon. This event will feature leaders from over 60 companies, including major tech giants like Google and Amazon, alongside prominent hospital systems such as the Cleveland Clinic.

The focus of the new system will be on diabetes and weight management, using conversational AI to assist patients, and providing digital tools like QR codes and apps for patient registration and medication tracking.

This initiative is spearheaded by an administration that openly shares highly sensitive data about Americans, pushing the limits of legal boundaries, with the hope that such medical information will remain confidential while improving convenience in the doctor’s office.

“There are substantial ethical and legal concerns,” noted Lawrence Gostin, a law professor at Georgetown University with expertise in public health. “Patients across the U.S. should be significantly concerned about how their medical records may be used to their detriment and that of their families.”

Officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), responsible for maintaining this system, emphasize the importance of choosing to share medical records and data to ensure patient safety.

These officials expressed the need for a system that allows patients to access their records easily, eliminating traditional obstacles like the use of fax machines that previously hindered this process.

“We currently possess tools and information that can enhance patient outcomes and healthcare experiences,” stated Dr. Mehmet Oz, CMS administrator, on Wednesday. The CMS already holds data on over 140 million Americans enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid.

Noom, a well-known weight loss and fitness subscription service participating in the initiative, will be able to access medical records following the anticipated launch of the system early next year.

This access may include lab results or medical tests that the app can leverage to generate AI-driven insights to assist users in weight loss, according to CEO Geoff Cook’s comments to The Associated Press. Apps and health systems will also have access to competitors’ information. For instance, Noom will grant access to users’ data from Apple Health.

“Currently, we have a lot of siloed data,” Cook remarked.

Tomislav Michaljevic, CEO of the Cleveland Clinic, noted that patients traveling for treatment often struggle to compile their medical records from various providers. He conveyed that the new system would eradicate this barrier, preventing delays in treatment and ensuring accurate diagnoses by providing complete medical histories.

Mihaljevic added that data from the health app is now readily accessible to doctors, aiding in the management of obesity and other chronic conditions, including tracking patients’ dietary habits and physical activity levels.

“These apps provide valuable insights into a patient’s health between doctor visits,” he emphasized.

Skip past newsletter promotions

CMS also offers a selection of Medicare.gov apps aimed at aiding individuals in managing chronic illnesses, selecting healthcare providers, and choosing insurance plans.

Digital privacy advocates are doubtful about the safety of patients’ data storage.

The federal government has done very little to regulate health applications and telehealth services, according to Jeffrey Chester of the Center for Digital Democracy.

This new initiative is poised to expand the pool of patient information accessible to both the federal government and high-tech firms. Medical records often contain sensitive data that includes patient-doctor conversations and notes on issues like substance abuse and mental health history.

“This initiative represents a gateway for the further use and commercialization of sensitive personal health data,” Chester commented.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and those in his circle are also advocates for wearable devices that monitor health and telehealth, promoting increased technological advancements in healthcare.

Kennedy has expressed a desire to gather more data from American medical records, previously mentioning intentions to utilize this data to research autism and vaccine safety. He has engaged with agency staff who possess backgrounds in health tech startups and businesses.

Introducing the New James Bond: How 007 First Light Earns Its Thrilling License | Games

For those years that seem to linger without fading away—marking the conclusion of the 25th 007 film and representing Daniel Craig’s iconic portrayal of the beloved spy—there remains no successor ready to don the tuxedo, order a martini, or take the wheel of an Aston Martin. At least, it’s not yet in cinemas. However, for the first time in Bond history, audiences will encounter the new James Bond in video games before he makes his film debut.

Crafted by the Danish studio IO Interactive for the upcoming 007 First Light, the new Bond has a strikingly handsome yet doll-like appearance. His fresh face and bright blue eyes are a departure from Craig’s rugged charm, as they lean more towards a youthful innocence rather than sharp intensity. This iteration of Bond doesn’t reject these classic traits but rather embraces them. First Light serves as an origin tale, designed to redefine one of entertainment’s most enduring protagonists for a new generation of gaming fans.

“We decided to start with origins so we could explore questions like, ‘Who was James Bond as a youth, and what does it mean to be a 00 agent?’ What does it truly signify to be 007?”

Historically, most James Bond video games have leaned heavily into the shooter genre, heavily inspired by the classic 1997 Nintendo 64 title, GoldenEye 007. Despite the ongoing success of the first-person shooter genre, the 007 games saw diminishing returns, with lackluster reviews and declining sales for 2012’s 007 Legends effectively sidelining Bond’s video game career—until IO approached Eon Productions with an exceptional concept.

“There’s an exciting shootout in the film, but if we really think about it, there isn’t that much,” Elverdam remarks. Addressing the discrepancies between the film and the game became a fundamental aspect of IO’s pitch, with the intent of allowing players to embody characters outside the constraints of cinema.

This was a familiar process for IO, which, between 2016 and 2021, successfully redefined the Hitman series—a franchise centered around elite contract killers. With a remarkable awareness of what worked in the previous Hitman games (focusing on strategic planning and problem-solving rather than gratuitous violence) and discarding the elements that did not resonate (such as convoluted narratives), the results were astounding: a series of endlessly replayable puzzles that allowed players to vanish without a trace. The satirical, clever tone of Hitman: The World of Assassination became a standout hallmark for IO.

“All of these elements [from Hitman],” Elverdam mentions, “if we adapt and innovate those, we can create a true Bond experience. These innovations should encompass driving, stealth, and yes, shootouts.”

“It’s not just about shooting”… Bond ventures onto the road with 007’s First Light.
Photo: IO Interactive

The title fits perfectly, as this game represents the first flicker of hope for a cherished franchise that has faced challenging times. Announced initially as Project 007 in November 2020, the game has persevered through Bond’s turbulent waters, a situation that began with a $8.45 billion (£6.3 billion) merger between MGM, the studio behind Bond, and Amazon in March 2022. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson helm this family business.

In February, Broccoli and Wilson ceded creative control to Amazon as part of a major contract, effectively ending the Broccoli family’s 63-year stewardship of the Bond film franchise. Since then, Amazon has begun to outline its plans, including hiring Denis Villeneuve to direct the next installment. The world is now watching and waiting for a casting decision, eager to see what this transition means for one of cinema’s most lucrative franchises.

However, while the upcoming film unfolds, the new game possibly holds the potential to leave a lasting mark. The 007 First Light Trailer doesn’t reveal much, yet it builds excitement. It’s a montage that rekindles everything fans adore about 007—the intricate traps and gadgets reminiscent of the Roger Moore era, coupled with the formidable physical presence of Craig’s portrayal and the charming attitude that has unified all iterations of the character.

Everything fans cherish about the series. Photo: IO Interactive

“To truly pursue high ambitions, it’s essential to examine various Bond installments, understand the essence of each, and infuse your unique perspective,” Elverdam states.

The creative director for First Light is keen to discuss Bond’s essence but remains tight-lipped regarding certain specifics of his version. For instance, the identity of the voice actor portraying Bond is still under wraps. Nevertheless, Elverdam acknowledges that due to Bond’s lasting appeal, he is a character not easily thrust into contemporary narratives.

“Each Bond represents the zeitgeist of their era, regardless of your intentions. That’s simply how it is,” he explains. “What is perceived as a threat, or desirable qualities, inevitably evolves over time.” Elverdam poses several thought-provoking questions that IO considers as they craft their rendition of Bond: When do you improvise? What does it mean to serve a king and a kingdom? Why engage in such tasks in the first place?

If Elverdam and IO adeptly address these queries, they may well establish a closer connection to the next film’s Bond than one might expect.

Introducing… Anita Dump! The Facebook Group for the Wildest Drug Names – Both Good and Bad!

I distinctly recall the moment I discovered it. Back in university, seated in a plush auditorium that felt slightly uncomfortable. Ping. A notification from Messenger: “Now with LOL,” my best friend texted from 14 kilometers away, without incurring any student debt. I clicked the link.

It was then that I stumbled upon one of the most significant social media communities ever. The Facebook group, simply titled “Drag Name!!!!!,” was vibrant and inviting.

The exuberance in the names and exclamation points speaks volumes. It’s a gathering space for thousands who revel in sharing the cleverest drag queen names.

“When you play with these words, you can almost sense the formation of new gray matter”: A typical post from the Facebook group. Photo: Facebook

It’s organized this way: every day (or whenever creativity strikes), members toss a theme into the mix. Think “biscuits,” “afterlife,” or “unethical.” Then, names start rolling in. For “chocolate,” one participant might suggest Emmanem, another offers Lindor Evangelista, and a particularly clever entry could be she/her.

I felt an immediate spark of inspiration. That day, during the lecture, I realized that no idea of mine could rival the boundless creativity of a 55-year-old man from Missouri.

Some contributions are instantly recognizable. For instance, a photo-inspired name could be Paula Lloyd. Breakfast might yield Shak Shuker, and a humorous take could be Dee Parton for the deceased.

Others require a moment of reflection, and their brilliance becomes even more rewarding. “The Merciful Drug Name” encompasses options like Hildadropen, Karen’s Attention, and Maya L Pue.

Hilda Dooropen, Karen Atterness, Maya L Pugh…, Linda Helping Hand. Photo: Facebook

I now see clever names everywhere. I sipped my coffee, recalling my favorite: flat white. When writing, I think of myself as a young journalist: Page Turner. After brewing, I might refer to myself as Anita Dump. In this world of words, I can almost feel new gray matter forming, as beneficial to my brain as learning new languages.

A few years back, I had the chance to interview pop sensation Dua Lipa during her visit to Australia for World Pride. I had to ask—did she come up with a drag name for the occasion? If not, how about Duo Apple?

Drag your name!!!!!! It’s a celebration of camp creativity, a blend of humor and joyful expression. The only guideline is to ensure that the name you propose hasn’t been shared before. This allows members to dive into an imaginative realm where they uncover the most delightful creations.

Unlike many groups, this one seems to be devoid of internal conflicts. There’s little risk of harmful disagreements; if they arise, they’ll likely spark even more fantastic names. Try the DEE platform.

Here, individuals from all backgrounds unite around a shared goal: to invent the most captivating names imaginable. Other online communities often lack this spirit of support.

Perhaps drag names embody true community spirit and joy—and what I dare to say is the essence of life? Call me a modern-day Hemingway, as the people truly are the gospel.

Introducing Cabbage: The World’s Most Expensive Coffee-Addicted Animal

If it weren’t for Dutch settlers who introduced coffee trees to the islands of Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi around 300 years ago, the world might still overlook the Asian palm civet.

Prior to this, these long, short-legged mammals were feasting on the islands’ fruits, berries, small mammals, and insects. Yet, with the emergence of coffee plants, these cat-like creatures discovered a new delicacy.

Coffee cherries, the small round fruits found on coffee plants, enclose the beans we adore.

Curious locals sampled them and preferred the taste. When farm owners noticed that the beans passed through the animals unscathed, they instructed their workers to collect them—after all, waste was not an option.

Then, an unusual phenomenon occurred. People began enjoying the coffee made from the civets’ recycled beans, noting its distinctive flavor featuring hints of chocolate, syrup, rusticity, and an earthy “jungle” undertone. Thus, Kopi Luwak coffee was born.

Although these civets remain in South and Southeast Asia, this rare coffee is now exported worldwide. Due to its unique production method, Kopi Luwak has become one of the priciest coffees available.

Prices for wild-sourced Kopi Luwak can range from $20 to $100 (approximately £15-80). But is it truly worth it?

In the wild, palm civets are believed to select only the ripest and finest coffee cherries. This selection enriches the flavor. As the beans traverse the animal’s digestive system, enzymes and stomach acids break down the cherry’s outer layer and digest internal proteins.

This process enhances the flavor and aroma of the coffee beans, appealing to aficionados, though it’s detrimental to the civets.

Palm civets are primarily solitary creatures, coming together only for mating. They establish territories and communicate through scent marking, using stimulating waxy substances from special glands near their feces, urine, and anus.

With their white masks amid dark fur, they blend seamlessly with the shadows of their forest habitats. Like all wildlife, they prefer to be left undisturbed.

However, the surging demand for Kopi Luwak Coffee has led to the establishment of civet farms in Asia. Here, these animals are often confined to small cages, deprived of proper nutrition and space, forcing them to live in poor conditions for the sake of luxury coffee. Wild civets suffer greatly in Indonesia.

While there are regulations regarding the number of civets that can be harvested from the wild in Indonesia, these rules are often overlooked by poachers and inadequately enforced. All this, just for a cup of coffee.

Introducing the New England Team Dedicated to Seal Conservation

Block Island, Rhode Island – The enigmatic aquarium animal rescue team is busier than ever.

With binoculars in hand, Program Manager Sarah Curran surveys the coastline, facing an increasing problem on Block Island.

When fishing gear, litter, or balloons entangle a gray seal’s neck, these marine mammals, which can weigh over 800 pounds, may suffer serious injuries or even death as the restraints tighten.

Thus far this year, Connecticut nonprofits have reported 20 tangled gray seals, surpassing the usual count recorded by Mystic each year.

Curran affectionately dubbed one of the seals “anxiety.”

Intertwined stickers.
Mysterious aquarium

NBC News has been granted rare access to follow Mystic’s collaboration with the Atlantic Marine Conservation Association and the Brock Island Maritime Institute, which recently formed.

Curran and her team navigated around a group of seal pups basking at the water’s edge. They skillfully separated the entangled pups and dashed on bright red boards to capture them with precision and speed.

Once a pup was secured, the team worked quickly to attach a tracker for research and freed it from the fishing net constricting its neck.

“We can release stickers today and avoid the need to transport them to the clinic for rehabilitation,” said Curran, who leads the effort. “The sooner you can intervene, the better the chances of recovery.”

This team previously photographed a seal pup stuck with a plastic object in downtown New Haven, Connecticut, in February. The pup, with its big eyes and gentle whine, captured the public’s heart and even received the name “Chappy” through a voting contest.

Unfortunately, Chappy’s story didn’t have a happy ending. In a statement online, Mystic reported that pieces of plastic were found in his stomach, highlighting the dangers that marine debris, particularly plastic, poses to marine life.

Some estimates indicate that plastic pollution claims the lives of over 100,000 marine mammals annually.

“The number of animals interacting with human debris in their early months of life is quite alarming,” Curran stated.

In this ongoing battle, Mystic remains undeterred.

The team celebrated as the seals returned to the sea, now freed from the constraining nets.

“It’s a special moment to give these animals a second chance at life,” Curran remarked. “It’s truly rewarding to witness.”

Introducing Amazon’s Groundbreaking Project: Kuiper Internet Satellites

The billionaire battle in space between Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk has entered a new arena, the satellite internet.

Started as an online bookstore 30 years ago, Amazon is Merchandising Behemoth, the owner of the James Bond franchise, and is a seller of electronic gadgets like the echo smart speaker and one of the most powerful providers of cloud computing.

So it’s not surprising that Amazon is launching the first few of the thousands of satellites known as Project Kuiper, offering another option to keep them connected in the modern world. The marketplace that brings high-speed internet from orbit to the ground is now dominated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX Rocket Company, which operates similar services. Starlink has thousands of satellites in orbit and has more launches almost every week, and Starlink already serves millions of customers around the world.

The first 27 projects Kuiper Satellites are scheduled to lift from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 7pm Eastern time on Wednesday.

They fly on Atlas V, a rocket created by the United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin. ULA plans to do it Provides live coverage From 6:35pm

The forecast only predicts 20% of the chances that winds and showers from coastal storms are likely to cause potential problems. However, there is a two-hour window where the load of propellant on the rocket begins and the launch may occur.

The spacecraft deploys the Kuiper satellite in a circular orbit 280 miles above the surface. The satellite’s propulsion system gradually raises its orbit to an altitude of 393 miles.

Project Kuiper is the constellations of Internet satellites aimed at providing high-speed data connections to almost every point on Earth. To make this a success, you’ll need thousands of satellites. Amazon’s goal is to operate more than 3,200 over the next few years.

The company competes with SpaceX’s StarLink, which was originally sold primarily to residential customers.

Kuiper aims to make its market, especially remote locations, but will also be integrated with Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud computing product popular with large companies and governments around the world. This could make it more attractive for businesses with satellite images and weather forecasts that need to perform data calculations, as well as moving large amounts of data throughout the Internet.

Ground stations connect Kuiper satellites to the web service infrastructure in a way that allows businesses to communicate with their own remote devices. For example, Amazon suggests that energy companies can use Kuiper to monitor and control remote wind farms and offshore drilling platforms.

In October 2023, two prototype Kuiper satellites were launched and the technology was tested. Amazon said the test was successful. These prototypes were not intended to be useful in operational constellations, and after seven months they returned to a burnt-out atmosphere. company I said Since then, we have updated the design of “subsystems on all systems and subsystems.”

“There’s a huge difference between launching two satellites and launching 3,000 satellites,” said Rajeev Badyal, Amazon executive who works for Kuiper, in a promotional video before its launch.

Amazon told the Federal Communications Commission in 2020 that the service would start after deploying the first 578 satellites. The company says it expects customers to connect to the internet later this year.

A fully functional constellations require thousands of satellites, but the company is able to serve in certain regions with far fewer orbits before expanding into later, more global coverage.

The approval of the FCC constellations required that at least half of the satellites be deployed by July 30, 2026. Industry analysts say if they show significant progress by then, the company can get an extension.

Putting a satellite into orbit also depends on the launch of the rocket that occurs on a schedule. This can be a problem if sufficient rockets are not available. Amazon also needs to build hundreds of ground stations to relay signals to users.

Introducing EBCare: A Revolutionary Smart Mask for Monitoring Metabolic and Respiratory Health

Recent respiratory disease epidemics have attracted a lot of attention, yet most respiratory monitoring is limited to physical signals. Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is packed with rich molecular information that can reveal various insights into an individual's health. Now, Professor Wei Gao and colleagues at California Institute of Technology have developed EBCare, a mask-based device that monitors EBC biomarkers in real time. For example, the EBCare mask can monitor asthma patients for their levels of nitrite, a chemical that indicates airway inflammation.

This diagram shows how the smart mask detects breathed chemicals, such as nitrite, an indicator of airway inflammation. Images by Wei Gao and Wenzheng Heng, Caltech.

“Monitoring a patient's breathing is routinely done, for example to assess asthma and other respiratory diseases,” Prof Gao said.

“However, this method requires patients to visit a clinic to have a sample taken and then wait for the test results.”

“Since COVID-19, people have started wearing masks. We can leverage this increased use of masks for remote, personalized monitoring to get real-time feedback on one's health from the comfort of one's own home or office.”

“For example, we could use this information to evaluate how effective a medical treatment is.”

To selectively analyze the chemicals and molecules in your breath, you first need to cool them down and condense them into a liquid.

In a clinical setting, this cooling step is separate from the analysis: Moistbreath samples are cooled in a bucket of ice or a large refrigerated cooler.

The EBCare mask, on the other hand, is self-cooling, according to the team.

The breath is cooled by a passive cooling system that integrates hydrogel evaporative cooling and radiative cooling to effectively cool the breath on the facemask.

“This mask represents a new paradigm for respiratory and metabolic disease management and precision medicine because wearing it daily allows for easy collection of breath samples and real-time analysis of exhaled chemical molecules,” said Wen-zheng Heng, a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology.

“Breath condensate contains soluble gases as well as non-volatile substances in the form of aerosols and droplets, including metabolic products, inflammatory indicators and pathogens.”

Once the breath is converted into liquid, a series of capillaries in a device called bioinspired microfluidics immediately transports the liquid to a sensor for analysis.

“We learned how to transport water from plants, which use capillary action to pull water up from the ground,” Professor Gao said.

“The analysis results are then sent wirelessly to an individual's phone, tablet or computer.”

“The smart mask can be prepared at a relatively low cost. The materials are designed to cost just $1.”

To test the masks, the authors conducted a series of human studies, focusing primarily on patients with asthma or COPD.

The researchers specifically monitored the patients' breath for nitrite, a biomarker of inflammation in both diseases.

Results showed that the masks accurately detected biomarkers indicative of inflammation in patients' airways.

In a separate experiment, the masks demonstrated that they could accurately detect subjects' blood alcohol levels, suggesting that they could potentially be used for field DUI checks and other alcohol consumption monitoring.

We also explored how the mask can be used to assess blood urea levels in the monitoring and management of kidney disease.

As kidney function declines, by-products of protein metabolism, such as urea, accumulate in the blood.

At the same time, the amount of urea in saliva increases, which breaks down into ammonia gas, leading to high ammonium concentrations in the breath condensate.

The study showed that the smart mask could accurately detect ammonium levels, closely reflecting the urea concentration in blood.

“Our smart mask platform for EBC collection and analysis represents a major advancement in the potential for real-time monitoring of lung health,” said Professor Harry Rossiter, director of the Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

“This concept, with the potential to add biosensors for a wide range of compounds in the future, highlights the groundbreaking potential of smart masks in health monitoring and diagnostics.”

The team's work is paper In the journal Science.

Introducing the Billionaire’s Unconventional and Lavish Doomsday Bunker

Have you ever considered what your doomsday plan would entail? If not, you’re not alone. While most people are more concerned with what’s for dinner tomorrow than surviving the apocalypse, billionaires have already thought ahead.

Instead of spending millions on extending their lifespans, reversing aging, or planning space trips, the ultra-rich are now investing in giant underground shelters to prepare for the end of the world. These luxurious bunkers offer comfortable living conditions below the surface, away from the chaos above.

While doomsday bunkers are not a new concept, recent trends show that billionaire bunkers are becoming increasingly extravagant. From zombie-proof fire moats to 10-car garages, these shelters cater to the highest levels of luxury. It seems fitting, considering they will likely be located underground.

But what exactly are the ultra-rich preparing for? And what do these apocalyptic shelters look like?

undefined

What are they preparing for?

Once seen as odd and paranoid, those who invest in shelters now have valid concerns about the future. The rise of artificial intelligence, pandemics, and global warming has instilled fear in many, even among the wealthiest individuals.

According to Douglas Rushkoff, a billionaire and writer who focuses on doomsday scenarios, the ultra-rich are not driven by fear but by desire. They see isolation in space stations or underground shelters as a reward for their accomplishments. It’s about winning the game of life and building the best shelter, not merely preparing for worst-case scenarios.

What do these bunkers look like?

End-of-life shelters come in various sizes, luxury levels, and features. Some are as small as a single room, while others resemble small apartments with amenities like garages, gyms, and saunas. The top-tier bunkers designed for billionaires include added rooms, tanks, and other necessary items, driving up prices significantly.

For many wealthy individuals, owning an island with a grand mansion on the surface conceals a maze of rooms underground for emergency situations. These bunkers serve as highly secure vacation homes with additional features for survival.

Will we all soon have bunkers?

While shelters were once exclusive to the ultra-rich and paranoid, the trend is shifting. Newer firms offer shelter options for a broader demographic, making it more accessible to average individuals. Popular group bunkers reminiscent of games like Fallout are also on the rise, accommodating large groups at a fraction of the cost of individual bunkers.

Architect Dante Vicino describes these group bunkers as underground cruise ships, with private and communal spaces for residents to gather, eat, and relax together. While luxury shelters may offer comfort during doomsday scenarios, building connections with neighbors and forming a community may be a more realistic survival strategy.

Introducing smartphones gradually is more beneficial for children than banning them completely

“Let’s take cell phones out of schools.” “Social media is harmful to teens.”

Such messages are being broadcast around the world and appear to have reached a peak in recent days. In the UK, concerns about the harms of social media and screen time have led to Smartphone Free Children Campaign A government crackdown on smartphone use in schools has also begun, and ministers are considering banning the sale of smartphones to anyone under 16. Meanwhile, in the United States, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy this week called for social media platforms to require cigarette-style warning labels.

More than 40% of American children own a smartphone by age 10, and the concern is Excessive screen use can lead to health problemsThese include obesity, sleep disorders, depression and anxiety.

Certainly, some studies have documented this link, but as we explain in our feature, The Truth About How Social Media and Screen Time Affect Young People, the evidence that screen time causes widespread harm to children is not as strong or clear as some claim.

While we figure out the details, we must protect our children, especially those who are most vulnerable to the harmful influences of smartphones and social media. But depriving them entirely would be the wrong move.

The smarter approach is to give children access, even from an early age, in a controlled and measured way.

Imagine what a smartphone utopia might look like: It would be done in stages: instead of giving kids access to the entire internet at first, we’d allow them access to walled gardens, like kid-friendly TV channels.

In such a world, we would allow limited messaging with strict moderation that loosens with age, the system would allow parents access that diminishes over time, and all of this would be combined with ongoing digital literacy classes.

Smartphones, social media, and screens will continue to be a part of our children’s lives, no matter how many warning labels they carry, and now is the time to think seriously about how we give our kids the tools they need to navigate the realities of growing up online.

Introducing Galaxy Squad: 5 essential tips for selecting a gaming laptop

When it comes to gaming, the experience is everything. Whether you’re into Fortnite or Baldur’s Gate 3, full immersion is key, and that requires a laptop that can keep up. According to expert Eleanor Alley, who coordinates events at the University of Warwick Esports Center, the laptop you choose will depend on the specific requirements of the game you want to play. From beginners to seasoned pros, there are certain technical aspects that everyone should be aware of…

What should you consider in a gaming laptop?
One crucial factor that can elevate your gaming experience is the speed of your computer. This directly impacts how smoothly the game runs and how realistic the graphics appear. Performance is influenced by three main components: the CPU (Central Processing Unit), which serves as the computer’s “brain”; RAM (Random Access Memory), which stores data required for quick access during operations, similar to short-term memory; and the GPU (graphics processing unit), which generates the images displayed on the screen.

What are the key features of a high-performance gaming laptop?
Nothing is more frustrating than a game freezing at a critical moment, indicating that your computer may not meet the game’s requirements. If the CPU, RAM, or GPU are not powerful enough, loading times and frame rates will suffer. Higher frame rates result in smoother visuals, while faster loading speeds lead to seamless transitions between scenes.

When shopping for a laptop, processing power should be a top consideration. The CPU, the main processor, typically contains multiple cores that handle instructions. While a “quad-core” processor may be adequate for some laptops, those designed for gaming should ideally have 8 or more cores. For top-notch performance, a processor with 16 cores, like the newly launched Intel Core Ultra 7 and Intel Ultra 9 in the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Ultra, is recommended.

Immerse yourself in the action with high-quality audio

Increasing the amount of RAM can also enhance your gaming experience by ensuring smoother gameplay. Insufficient RAM can lead to lag, instability, and frustration. Gaming laptops should ideally have at least 16 GB of RAM, with options for more like the 32 GB available in the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Ultra.

The final piece of the puzzle is the graphics processing unit, which is essential for better visuals and gameplay. A dedicated GPU, separate from the CPU, is crucial for improved performance, especially in demanding games like Red Dead Redemption 2. The Galaxy Book4 Ultra offers two highly acclaimed NVIDIA RTX graphics options.

For Lee, the overall gaming experience hinges on the integration of these elements.

Her recommendation is to compare your system’s specifications with the game’s hardware requirements and test your favorite games on the laptop you’re considering or try out more demanding titles like Baldur’s Gate 3.

What is the ideal screen size for gaming?
Lee suggests a minimum screen size of 15.6 inches, which is met by the 16-inch screen of the Galaxy Book4 Ultra. She advises opting for a screen resolution of at least 1080p and a refresh rate of 120 Hz for an enhanced gaming experience. The Galaxy Book4 series features a 3K screen resolution, providing a superior gameplay experience, especially for players who enjoy first-person games.

Modern laptops utilize AI and high-performance GPUs to create more realistic visuals. Vibrant colors and a visible touchscreen even in bright conditions further enhance the gaming experience.

Besides a great screen, top-notch audio is essential for gamers. Therefore, the inclusion of high-quality speakers and a studio-quality microphone with AI noise cancellation ensures immersive sound and minimal distractions.

How can I ensure my laptop is compatible with gaming hardware?
Portability is a key aspect of laptops. However, this should not limit your ability to use various hardware such as external screens, controllers, charging docks, headsets, and other accessories. Therefore, a laptop with multiple ports is essential. The Galaxy Book4 series laptops are equipped with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, along with USB, HDMI, headphone, and microphone jacks.

What are the most important factors to consider when choosing a gaming laptop?
As long as you have a capable CPU and GPU, sufficient RAM, and a quality screen, you likely have a great gaming laptop. While some may prioritize a 4K display, the graphics processor is more crucial and should be the main focus when balancing costs.

One of the advantages of laptops is their portability, as noted by Lee who values the ability to take it anywhere. In the past, this could mean compromising performance, but modern laptops maintain both portability and power.

Introducing Merlin Chain: A Native L2 Solution for Blockchain News, Opinion, TV, and Jobs

New York, USA, January 31, 2024, Chainwire

This week, the long-awaited Bitcoin L2 solution Merlin Chain went live on testnet, with mainnet expected to launch within a month.

Bitcoin network congestion dilemma and scaling solutions

The evolution of Ordinals over the past year has brought renewed attention to the Bitcoin ecosystem after a long period of time. While increasing the excitement in the Bitcoin ecosystem, it is also increasing the depletion of network resources. Increasingly high transaction costs, combined with the rising price of Bitcoin itself, are further congesting the network and discouraging new users from getting interested in Bitcoin.

(Bitcoin daily average transaction fee $: YCharts)

The idea of developing an EVM-compatible L2 network has been recognized as the first to yield results because the implementation path is simple.

Merlin Chain is also one of the EVM-compatible L2 chains and is developed by Bitmap Tech (formerly Recursiverse), the team that built the BRC-420 protocol and Bitmap.game, and is highly sought after by the community due to the team's past success. It is highly rated.

BRC-420

The BRC-420 protocol supports arbitrary file format combinations/recursion to form more complex inscriptions. Character images, game scripts, virtual machines, AI models, and more can all become Bitcoin assets.

Its core asset, Blue Box, has risen from a registration cost of $0.15 to an ATH floor price of $26,000, while other assets such as Minerals and Dis Song About NFT are the most actively traded on the OKX market. It's one of our assets. Today, we have over 1000 developers and 600+ collections, and our prices are only going up, not down, and we've been performing great even in bear markets.

bitmap games

Bitmap.Game is a fully on-chain, fully decentralized, and fair-launched Metaverse project. It is based on the digital matter theory underlying Bitcoin and is open sourced to be run or verified by any client, reflecting the concept of “client agnosticism” in a fully on-chain game.

During this time, Bitmap's market cap rose from $3 million to an ATH of $290 million. With over 30,000 owners, Bitmap has surpassed Sandbox as the metaverse asset with the most owners across all blockchains.

Unleash Bitcoin's potential with innovative magic

Merlin Chain believes that L2 for Bitcoin means more than just cheap transfers or the availability of DApps, it also means further innovation that unlocks Bitcoin's potential through native assets, users, and protocols. I think it should be something.

For example, how to create games based on bitmaps so that bitmap users can participate in different metauniverses at low cost, since bitmaps are fully decentralized assets. Or for DeFi protocols based on BRC-420, how to authorize NFTs and FTs in both directions. For Inscription Minting, we will discuss how to mint his L1 assets on L2 in a more cost-effective and flexible manner. Rather than replicating how Ethereum works, only these “Bitcoin-native” innovations can continue to power the ecosystem.

So far, Merlin Chain has built a strong DApp ecosystem, effectively addressed liquidity concerns, and plans further expansion.

Efficient and secure scaling with ZK-Rollup

Diverse ecosystems and assets also mean higher throughput requirements and some safety risks. To solve this problem, Merlin Chain adopted ZK-Rollup. This allows you to compress large numbers of transaction proofs into simple checksums, improving transaction efficiency and scalability.

Merlin Chain's sequencer nodes are responsible for collecting and batching transactions, generating compressed transaction data, ZK state roots, and proofs via zkEVM. Compressed transaction data and ZK proofs are uploaded to Bitcoin L1’s Taproot via the decentralized Oracle network and made available across the network, ensuring transparency and security.

Decentralized Oracle network nodes are required to stake $BTC to prevent inappropriate activity. Users can start challenging her ZK rollup based on compressed data, ZK state roots, and ZK proofs. If the challenge is successful, it will be rolled back to the last verified state and the Oracle node will lose its locked $BTC, ensuring the security and reliability of the system.

Through the integration of these technologies, Marlin Chain has demonstrated superior technical capabilities and is on track to build an efficient and secure native Bitcoin L2 solution.

Native integration – Merlin Chain’s Bitcoin-centric approach

Compared to other Bitcoin L2 attempts currently being attempted, one of the key features of Merlin Chain is that it is “Bitcoin native.”

Merlin Chain, which has been a strong believer in Bitcoin for many years, is very passionate about the development of the Bitcoin ecosystem, and rather than providing services to other ecosystems in the name of Bitcoin, Through my work, I aim to bring more users and assets to Bitcoin. Therefore, Merlin Chain appreciates the native nature of Bitcoin in its ecosystem of projects and users.

Additionally, Merlin Chain supports most of the major Bitcoin L1 protocols, including BRC-20, Bitmap, BRC-420, Atomicals, SRC20, and Pipe. All inscriptions on L1 will be automatically whitelisted by Merlin Chain, allowing users to trade safely and affordably.

In line with its pursuit of “Bitcoin Native”, Merlin Chain plans to adopt BRC-20 as its governance token. This makes much more sense than the other Bitcoin L2, which currently uses the Ethereum standard token as its governance token. Tokens will be released through a fair launch, with a 48-month release period that does not start within two years, with the exception of a portion that will be distributed to VCs and teams, to prove the interests of teams and investors. Trust in Marlin Chain.

Bridging the Gap – Simplifying Bitcoin Adoption and Accelerating Growth

Another tricky issue for Bitcoin ecosystem builders is the lack of new users and new capital. Ordinals continues to do well, but the number of active addresses has not increased significantly. It's the same group of people involved in different projects. The fundamental reason for this is Bitcoin's complexity. Not only does it require downloading a Bitcoin wallet, writing is also not very easy, the user has to spend at least 2 blocks of time writing, while for confirmation he has to spend 3 blocks of time , which is complex and complex. it takes time.

(Daily active Bitcoin address: Glassnode)

Marlin Chain solves this problem. Currently, Marlin Chain is connected to 40 Ethereum chains, so even users who are not familiar with Bitcoin can use familiar wallets such as Metamask and familiar assets such as stablecoins, $ETH, and $BNB. Masu. . Interact with Marlin Chain. A user doesn't need to know the principles behind Bitcoin, or even what BRC-20 or Atomic is, before he can experience Bitcoin the way it was meant to be in a familiar way.

To this end, Merlin Chain plans to integrate the first multi-chain writing DApp. This will allow users to write assets to other layers, including Bitcoin L1 on Merlin Chain. Only one block of time is required to wait. At the same time, the Launchpad is also available on the Marlin chain, with a mechanism that every inscription fired on it is rated at 100,000 FDV, and more users will be able to use the BRC-20/ BRC-420 You will be able to easily purchase assets such as /. Atomic/Runes at a very low price. Additionally, as part of its decentralization efforts, Merlin Chain plans to release most of its governance tokens to the community.

Users should stay tuned for the upcoming mainnet launch. The future of Bitcoin is about to unfold with Merlin Chain at the helm.

About Marlin Chain

Marlin Chain is a Bitcoin Layer2 that integrates the ZK-Rollup network, a decentralized oracle network, and an on-chain BTC anti-fraud module. Marlin Chain is committed to powering Bitcoin's native assets, protocols, and products on Layer 1 through the Layer 2 network to make Bitcoin fun again. Marlin Chain is a subsidiary product line of Bitmap Tech, his OG team of top-notch players with a combined market capitalization of over $500 million. The BRC-420 “Blue Box” collection under Bitmap Tech has become one of Ordinals’ most popular assets.

Federal Authorities Push for Introducing Drunk-Driving Prevention Technology in Cars, But Face Challenges

The in-vehicle technology used by Ford, GM and others to ensure drivers pay attention to the road has come a long way. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it is still not enough to prevent or reduce the harm caused by drunk driving.

This assessment is included throughout the agency’s new 99-page Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking. released Tuesday was a pit stop of sorts on the way to enacting regulations that would require in-vehicle technology to recognize when a driver has been drinking.

NHTSA is currently seeking assistance in determining what technology should be incorporated into vehicles to completely reduce or prevent this problem, in part because NHTSA has no commercially available options. states that it does not exist. After the notice is published in the Federal Register, the public has 60 days to submit comments.

NHTSA says it evaluated 331 driver monitoring systems and found no commercially available systems that adequately handle the identification of alcohol impairment. The magazine noted that there are three DMS systems that claim to detect alcohol-induced impairment, but said they are still in the research and development stage. (We did not reveal the names of those systems.)

However, driver monitoring is not the only option at NHTSA’s disposal. NHTSA embarked on this mission after President Biden ordered the agency to find a solution in 2021 with bipartisan infrastructure legislation. The act charged NHTSA with developing federal motor vehicle safety standards that could determine whether a driver is impaired by passively monitoring the driver. Or it could be by passively (and accurately) detecting whether the blood alcohol concentration is too high, or a combination of both.

Accuracy is key, and NHTSA findings suggest that blood alcohol detection technology is a more viable solution in the short term. After all, dozens of states already require breathalyzer-based alcohol ignition interlocks for repeat offenders or high-BAC offenders. However, this technology is considered ‘active’, meaning that drivers must actively engage with it, which is contrary to the law’s passive requirement.

There may be another option.

Since 2008, NHTSA has been working with the Alliance for Automobile Traffic Safety (ACTS) on a public-private partnership called Driver Alcohol Sensing Systems for Safety (DADSS). As part of that program, DADSS has developed both breath-based and contact-based methods to detect driver impairment. Breath-based methods are also considered active and therefore non-starters, while touch sensors are designed to be embedded in something the driver needs to touch to operate the vehicle (such as a push-start button). NHTSA has “preliminarily determined that such touch sensors may be considered passive.”

ACTS CEO Robert Strassberger said he believes touch sensors may be the best option in the short term, given the technology’s limitations in being passive. He wants to know what the public thinks.

“That’s going to be one of the areas of interest for me when I read the comments that are ultimately submitted. How do people feel about it? Will it ultimately be accepted by consumers? It depends,” he says. “I think one of the things we definitely want to avoid doing is asking drivers to learn a new way of interacting with their cars.”

Timing is critical. Not only does drunk driving kill thousands of people each year and cost the country billions of dollars, final regulations need to be standardized by November 2024.

Judging by the number of questions NHTSA raises in its notice, achieving this goal may be difficult. The agency is raising all sorts of thorny questions, as well as seeking further comment on driver monitoring and the definition of “passive.” For example, if the start/stop button has a touch sensor, how does it know that the driver is pressing it? If the system determines that the driver is too drunk to start the car, Should you prevent your car from starting? What if the driver is trying to escape a wildfire?

“This is very complex rulemaking,” Strassberger said. “There are a lot of details that the agency needs to get right.”
