NSPCC Survey Reveals 1 in 10 UK Parents Report Online Threats Against Their Children

Almost 10% of parents in the UK report that their children have faced online threats, which can include intimidation over intimate photos and the exposure of personal information.

The NSPCC, a child protection charity, indicated that while 20% of parents are aware of a child who has been a victim of online blackmail, 40% seldom or never discuss the issue with their children.

According to the National Crime Agency, over 110 reports of attempted child sextortion are filed monthly. In these cases, gangs manipulate teenagers into sharing intimate images and then resort to blackmail.

Authorities in the UK, US, and Australia have noted a surge in sextortion cases, particularly affecting teenage boys and young men, who are targeted by cybercrime groups from West Africa and Southeast Asia. Tragically, some cases have resulted in suicide, such as that of 16-year-old Murray Dawe from Dunblane, Scotland, who took his life in 2023 after being sextorted on Instagram, and 16-year-old Dinal de Alwis, who died in Sutton, south London, in October 2022 after being threatened over nude photographs.

The NSPCC released its findings based on a survey of over 2,500 parents, emphasizing that tech companies “fail to fulfill their responsibility to safeguard children.”

Rani Govender, policy manager at the NSPCC, stated: “Children deserve to be safe online, and this should be intrinsically woven into these platforms, not treated as an afterthought after harm has occurred.”

The NSPCC defines blackmail as threats to release intimate images or videos of a child, or any private information the victim wishes to keep confidential, including aspects like their sexuality. Such information may be obtained consensually, through coercion, manipulation, or even via artificial intelligence.

The perpetrators can be outsiders, such as sextortion gangs, or acquaintances like friends or classmates. Blackmailers might demand various things in exchange for not disclosing information, such as money, additional images, or maintaining a relationship.

The NSPCC explained that while extortion overlaps with sextortion, it encompasses a broader range of situations. “We opted for the term ‘blackmail’ in our research because it includes threats related to various personal matters children wish to keep private (e.g., sexual orientation, images without religious attire) along with various demands and threats, both sexual and non-sexual,” the charity noted.

The report also advised parents to refrain from “sharing,” which pertains to posting photos or personal information about their children online.

Experts recommend educating children about the risks of sextortion and being mindful of their online interactions. They also suggest creating regular opportunities for open discussions between children and adults, such as during family meals or car rides, to foster an environment where teens are comfortable disclosing if they face threats.

“Understanding how to discuss online threats in a manner appropriate to their age and fostering a safe space for children to come forward without fear of judgment can significantly impact their willingness to speak up,” Govender emphasized.

The NSPCC spoke with young individuals regarding their reluctance to share experiences of attempted blackmail with parents or guardians. Many cited feelings of embarrassment, a preference to discuss with friends first, or a belief that they could handle the situation on their own.

Rising Solar Threats Target SpaceX’s Starlink and Other Satellites

The proliferation of satellites in orbit is accelerating rapidly, yet their vulnerability to solar storms remains poorly understood. This issue is expected to intensify.

Since May 2019, SpaceX has deployed over 10,000 satellites as part of its Starlink internet megaconstellation, with approximately 1,000 currently re-entering Earth’s atmosphere at a rate of one or two daily. These satellites form a vast network surrounding the Earth, which suggests that solar and related geomagnetic storms could impact at least some satellites at any given time.

To assess the implications of these storms on Starlink, Kang Eun Joo and researchers at the University of California, Irvine, analyzed publicly available satellite tracking data collected during the solar storm of May 2024.

The findings indicated that during the storm’s peak, Starlink satellites on the sun-facing side experienced an altitude reduction of up to half a kilometer. While this drop is minor compared to their 550-kilometer orbit, it is significant because solar radiation can generate atmospheric drag on the satellites.

Satellites in other locations, particularly those near the Earth’s poles where the magnetic field attracts more solar particles, and those over the South Atlantic Anomaly, where the magnetic field has weakened, also experienced substantial effects.

According to the data reviewed by the research team, an unusual phenomenon occurred among the constellations. “When one satellite descends, neighboring satellites must adjust accordingly,” Kang explained, utilizing onboard ion thrusters to recalibrate the affected satellites. This is necessary since the satellites communicate via line-of-sight lasers to maintain the network, which creates a cascading effect as adjacent satellites follow suit. “It’s like a wave,” remarked Sangeeta Abdu Jyoti, another researcher at UC Irvine.

This could lead to challenges for other satellites maneuvering around the Starlink constellation to prevent collisions. “Unpredictable paths heighten collision risks,” Abdu Jyoti cautioned.

Additional publicly accessible data also reveals the repercussions of solar storms. Some Starlink users utilize an online service called RIPE Atlas to monitor their connection status. By analyzing this information, Kang and her team noted that satellites experienced disruptions and reported network outages during the May 2024 storm. “Packet loss surged immediately,” Kang stated, resulting in data failing to reach its intended targets.

This study emphasizes the challenges faced by satellite constellations such as Starlink, as well as those in development like Amazon’s Project Kuiper and various projects in China, due to solar activity jeopardizing communication and potentially leading to drastic positional changes that could result in collisions with other satellites.

In February 2022, a significant solar storm caused 40 newly launched Starlink satellites to return to the atmosphere, where they incinerated. Recent studies have also indicated that heightened solar activity is accelerating the decline of certain Starlink satellites.

The May 2024 solar storm was roughly three times weaker than the Carrington event of 1859—the strongest solar storm on record. Such records are likely to be repeated, potentially creating significant challenges for satellite operators. “If an exceptionally strong storm occurs, the situation will worsen,” Abdu Jyoti said. “But the extent of that worsening remains uncertain.”

For now, I hope to have adequate preparation time. The May 2024 storm happened at the peak of the sun’s 22-year activity cycle. A powerful storm could strike at any moment, with a higher likelihood expected in the 2040s when solar activity intensifies again. By that time, it’s anticipated that tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, more satellites will be in orbit compared to the current approximate count of 13,000. “The more satellites you have, the greater the issue,” stated Scott Shambaugh, founder of Leonid Space, a US company tracking the impact of space weather on satellites.

“Currently, we lack reliable predictive models to assess how solar storms impact drag over short timescales,” Shambaugh explained. “Consequently, satellites may not be where anticipated for hours or days following a storm.”

Matthew Owens identified another area needing further understanding: substorms—minor fluctuations in the atmosphere caused by solar heating that disproportionately affect satellites in varied orbits, according to researchers from Britain’s University of Reading. “Geomagnetic storms consist of numerous substorms,” he noted, “but these are extraordinarily challenging to forecast.”

Satellite constellations like Starlink provide a unique perspective on this activity, effectively serving as a massive research network in orbit around Earth. “These satellites may very well be our first data probes for analyzing local variations in atmospheric drag,” Abdu Jyoti concluded.

Cyber Threats Can Be Conquered: GCHQ Chief Calls on Businesses to Strengthen Cybersecurity Efforts

The chief of GCHQ emphasized the importance for businesses to implement additional measures to mitigate the potential consequences of a cyber-attack, such as maintaining a physical paper version of their crisis plan for use in the event that an attack disables their entire computer infrastructure.

“What is your contingency plan? Because attacks will inevitably succeed,” stated Anne Keast Butler, head of GCHQ, the UK government’s cyber and signals intelligence agency, since 2023.

“Have you genuinely tested the outcome if that were to occur in your organization?” Keast Butler remarked Wednesday at a London conference organized by cybersecurity firm Record Future. “Is your plan… documented on paper somewhere in case all of your systems go offline? How do you communicate with each other if you are entirely reliant on those systems and they fail?”

Recently, the National Cyber Security Center, part of GCHQ, reported a 50% rise in “very serious” cyber-attacks over the last year. Security and intelligence agencies are now confronting new attacks several times a week, according to the data.

Keast Butler mentioned that governments and businesses must collaborate to address future threats and enhance defense mechanisms, as contemporary technology and artificial intelligence make risks more widespread and lower the “entry-level capabilities” that malicious actors need to inflict harm. He highlighted their efforts in “blocking millions of potential attacks” by partnering with internet service providers to eliminate harmful websites at their origin, but noted that larger companies need to ramp up their self-protection measures.

On Tuesday, a Cyber Monitoring Center (CMC) report revealed that the Jaguar Land Rover hack could cost the UK economy around £1.9 billion, marking it as the most costly cyberattack in British history.

After the attacks in August, JLR was forced to suspend all factory and office operations and may not achieve normal production levels until January.

Keast Butler pointed out that “[there are] far more attacks that have been prevented than those we highlight,” adding that the increased focus on the JLR and several other significant cyber incidents serves as a crucial reminder of the need for robust cybersecurity protocols.

She regularly converses with CEOs of major companies and has conveyed that they should include individuals on their boards who possess expertise in cybersecurity. “Often, due to the board’s composition, nobody knows the pertinent questions to ask, which results in interest, but the right inquiries go unposed,” she noted.

Earlier this year, the Co-op Group experienced a cyberattack that cost it up to £120 million in profits and compromised the personal data of several of its members. Shireen Khoury Haq, CEO of the group, mentioned in a public letter the critical role of cybersecurity training in formulating strategies to respond to attacks.

“The intensity, urgency, and unpredictability of a real-time attack are unparalleled to anything that can be rehearsed. Nonetheless, such training is invaluable; it cultivates muscle memory, sharpens instincts, and reveals system vulnerabilities.”

Keast Butler mentioned a “safe space” that has been created to encourage companies to exchange information about attacks with government entities, allowing them to do so without risking the disclosure of sensitive commercial data to competitors.

“I believe sometimes individuals struggle to come forward due to personal issues or challenges within the company, which hinders our ability to assist in making long-term strategic improvements to their systems,” she remarked.

“Creative Industries Face Threats”: The Lincoln Lawyer Author Discusses AI Risks

He is among the most prolific writers in the publishing world, averaging over one novel each year. Yet, even Michael Connelly, the acclaimed author behind the popular “Lincoln Lawyer” series, expressed concerns about keeping pace with the evolving narrative around AI.

Connelly’s eighth installment in the series, set to debut on Tuesday, revolves around a lawsuit targeting an AI firm after its chatbot advised a 16-year-old boy to kill his unfaithful ex-girlfriend.

As he penned the story, he observed the rapid technological advancements transforming society, raising fears that his storyline might soon be outdated.

“You don’t need to be a genius to see that AI signifies a monumental shift impacting science, culture, medicine, and more,” he stated. “Its influence will permeate every facet of our existence.

“However, in many respects, it resembles the Wild West, devoid of any regulatory framework. With AI progressing so swiftly, I even wondered if my book would feel antiquated upon release.”

The Lincoln Lawyer series is a LA-based thriller featuring defense attorney Mickey Haller, who operates from a Lincoln car. The series was adapted into a 2011 film starring Matthew McConaughey and also has a Netflix rendition.

Once again, The Proving Ground draws from actual events within the series.

“There was an incident in Orlando, where a teenager took his own life after allegedly being encouraged by a chatbot, and previously in the UK, a person suffering from mental health challenges also committed suicide,” Connelly remarked. I was encouraged [by a chatbot] to jump over the walls of Windsor Palace in search of the queen with a bow and arrow.”

On the novel’s theme, he added: “Is free speech a privilege for humans or machines? In the Orlando case, a judge ruled that machines lack human rights. Yet, it raises an intriguing question: Could AI ever be granted similar rights as humans?”

At 69, Connelly stands out as a leading crime novelist, with more than 89 million copies of his books sold, often topping bestseller lists. He is also recognized for the “Harry Bosch” series, which was transformed into an Amazon television series. (In his fictional universe, Haller and Bosch are half-siblings.)

The author himself has faced challenges posed by AI. He is part of a collective of writers, including Jonathan Franzen, Jodi Picoult, and John Grisham, suing OpenAI over copyright violations.

“The Authors Guild contacted me and informed me that my entire body of work had been utilized to train OpenAI’s chatbot,” Connelly disclosed. “I didn’t authorize this. If unchecked, every publisher risks extinction. Authors would lack protection over their creative assets. The lawsuit aims to establish necessary regulations across all applications.”

He referenced the 1997 defeat of chess champion Garry Kasparov by IBM’s Deep Blue as a pivotal moment that has led to our current predicament. When asked if writers might follow suit as grandmasters have, he replied, “It’s conceivable, yet I doubt it would enhance our world.”

Connelly has committed $1 million (£746,000) to combat the growing trend of book bans in his home state of Florida. He felt compelled to act after learning that Harper Lee’s “A Story of Alabama,” which had a significant impact on him, was temporarily removed from classrooms in Palm Beach County.

“That book was instrumental in my development as a writer. Without it, I wouldn’t have created ‘The Lincoln Lawyer,'” he noted. He was also taken aback when Stephen Chbosky’s impactful novel “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” which holds deep significance for his daughter, faced a ban.

He and his wife, Linda McCaleb, are financial supporters of PEN America’s Miami office that combats book bans. “It’s run by legal professionals who typically intervene by filing injunctions against the school board,” he explained. “No one has the right to tell a child, ‘You can’t read’ or impose restrictions on parental guidance over their children.”

Florida’s Anti-Vaccine Movement Poses Threats to Public Health Nationwide

The movement against vaccines has gained significant traction in the US, prompting Florida officials to repeal all vaccine mandates, including those for schoolchildren. This decision may inspire similar actions in other states, potentially leading to a resurgence of long-eradicated pediatric diseases.

“If I were a virus, I would celebrate right now,” stated Cynthia Leifer from Cornell University in New York. “The potential elimination of all vaccine mandates in Florida could allow diseases that have been controlled for years to rear their heads again.”

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the anti-vaccine movement has solidified its presence in the United States, with Florida being a prime example. In 2022, it was the first state to recommend Covid-19 mRNA vaccinations for most children, later expanding that guidance to include all individuals. Now, it might become the first state to entirely abolish vaccine mandates.

The announcement came from Joseph Ladapo, the state’s chief public health officer, on September 3. “This last mandate is fundamentally flawed,” he stated.

Like all states, Florida mandates certain vaccinations for children before they can enroll in school. However, under the authority of the Florida Department of Health led by Ladapo, there is considerable power to delegate vaccine requirements in schools. Ultimately, only state lawmakers can lift all vaccine requirements.

In a statement reported by the Associated Press, the state health department indicated that changes to existing regulations could impact required vaccines, including those for hepatitis B, chickenpox, influenza, HIB, and pneumococcal disease. Unless legislators revoke the laws, vaccines such as polio and measles will remain mandatory for school attendance under state law.

Vaccine requirements are a key factor in the US maintaining one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, which is crucial for preventing diseases like polio, diphtheria, and pertussis from becoming prevalent. Removing these mandates could jeopardize decades of public health achievements and put lives at risk. According to a 2024 CDC report, routine childhood vaccinations have saved approximately 1.13 million lives and averted about 508 million infections in children born from 1994 to 2023.

“Vaccines are victims of their own success; people no longer witness children suffering from preventable diseases,” Leifer remarked.

Much of the resistance against vaccines stems from concerns regarding side effects. However, research shows that the risks associated with vaccination are minor compared to those posed by infections. For instance, the likelihood of developing myocarditis or heart inflammation is seven times higher following Covid-19 infection than after vaccination. Additionally, one in 1000 individuals infected with measles may develop encephalitis, while one in one million vaccinated individuals experience the same condition.

During the press conference, Ladapo provided no scientific rationale for removing the vaccine mandates. The Florida Department of Public Health did not respond to inquiries from New Scientist regarding this matter, instead focusing on appeals to personal and religious freedoms.

“Should this individual dictate what goes into your body? Who decides what your child should receive in their body?” he questioned, emphasizing that each body is a gift from God.

This argument overlooks that over half the states, including Florida, permit exemptions from mandated vaccines for religious reasons. Furthermore, 16 states allow exemptions for personal beliefs, and all states have provisions for medical exemptions.

If school mandates are lifted, it is uncertain how significantly vaccination rates might drop. However, historical data suggests that enforcing requirements boosts vaccine uptake. For example, Maine eliminated personal and religious exemptions in 2019, resulting in over 95% of school-aged children receiving the vaccinations required by 2024, thus achieving herd immunity against measles.

In Florida, less than 89% of kindergarteners were vaccinated from 2024 to 2025. Achieving herd immunity requires a concerted effort to boost vaccination rates nationwide, rather than undermining them.

Scientists Risk Losing Crucial Tools for Studying Melting Antarctic Ice Sheets Amid Rising Climate Threats

The decommissioning of Palmer has played a significant role in contributing to sea level rise, particularly as certain regions of Antarctica face limited access, raising concerns among scientists regarding potential ice sheet collapses.

In a statement to NBC News, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced plans to streamline resources by consolidating McMurdo, Amunsense Cott South Paul, and Palmer Station, with the goal of maintaining three research stations operating throughout the year in Antarctica.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP) mentioned that they aim to “maintain an active and influential presence in Antarctica while facilitating cutting-edge research in biology and glaciology.”

The NSF was the first to propose the termination of the lease this spring, following the Trump administration’s proposed budget cuts of 55%. Scientists expressed their disappointment that Congress initiated the process of abolishing the ship before finalizing its budget.

“Oceanologist Karos Moffat, an associate professor at the University of Delaware, discussed the budgets that have made advancements in both Senate and House appropriations committees.

The NSF is exploring alternative vessels to take on some of Palmer’s responsibilities and plans to return the vessel to its owner, Edison Chowest, a marine transport company based in Louisiana.

In 2024, the NSF finalized the charter of another Antarctic vessel, RV Laurence M. Gould, which has been upgraded to operate in sea ice, rather than utilizing icebreakers. This reduces the options available for enhancing research in polar oceanography and supporting Palmer Station, an annual base on the Antarctic Peninsula that previously depended on two ships.

The NSF mentioned on Friday that there are “alternatives” available to support and resupply Palmer Station, including commercial options.

Measuring 308 feet, the Palmer, named after a 19th-century seal captain, commenced its service in 1992, exploring various regions of Antarctica. The vessel accommodates approximately 22 crew members and can host around 45 scientists.

No other U.S. research vessels can fulfill all the missions that this polar icebreaker is designed for. The vessel is crucial for studying Antarctic ecology, the Southern Ocean carbon cycle, and monitoring the rate at which ice shelves recede and melt, ultimately influencing sea level rise.

While satellites offer valuable data on the dynamics of ice sheet growth and reduction, the primary research on these changes relies on subsurface measurements.

Without such data, U.S. scientists will lack critical insights into the major ice sheets of the Southern Ocean, which are key to predicting future flooding risks in U.S. coastal cities. For instance, researchers highlight that other U.S. vessels are not suitable for safely accessing the notorious Swaitonga glacier, often referred to as the “end of the Apocalyptic Glacier.”

Researchers frequently describe the West Ku as a cork for a bottle that could rapidly drain the West Antarctic ice sheet, serving as a protective barrier against its collapse into the Amundsen Sea. This could result in a sea level rise exceeding 10 feet over a span of hundreds of thousands of years.

By the year 2100, the likelihood of such a collapse could elevate sea levels significantly beyond the 1-3 feet previously anticipated, as indicated in recent reports by the Intergovernmental Panel.

This disintegration could also alter ocean circulation patterns, affecting how quickly the ocean absorbs carbon, which remains an active area of research. Several studies suggest that current Earth temperatures may have surpassed the threshold for collapse, although further investigation is necessary.

Current shifts in mass and stability are influenced by factors occurring hundreds or thousands of feet beneath the water’s surface, necessitating optimal access through robotic instruments.

“To grasp the drastic changes occurring, it’s essential to be at the edge of the ice where it interacts with the ocean,” Werner explained. “And that’s precisely what this boat allows us to do.”

Scientists typically travel to Palmer every two years, using the data collected over the course of a month or more to advance their laboratory research.

The information gathered aboard the vessel is invaluable, enabling scientists to study ice comprehensively for over a decade, adding vital icebreakers to the U.S. science fleet and alleviating the longstanding backlog of researchers seeking fieldwork opportunities at Palmer.

As she crossed into Austria, Andrea Fisher, the assistant director of the multidisciplinary mountain research institute at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, remarked that such popular movements are growing increasingly vigorous and frequent.

“These vessel systems are incredibly intricate, making them tough to manipulate. However, AI accelerates everything,” explains Brekke-Sanderud. “How does this part function? Can I locate a password amidst this dense manual?”

Stationed at the Norwegian Shipowner Association’s headquarters along the quay of the Norwegian capital, Norma Cyber collaborates with the Norwegian Shipowner’s Risk Insurance Association (DNK).

Two years ago, these organizations united to create a Maritime Security and Resilience Centre, which surveys global threats ranging from warfare and terrorism to intellectual property violations—both physical and digital. They also conduct this work on behalf of the Norwegian government.

Emerging evidence suggests that nations may exploit these vulnerabilities against maritime adversaries.

Reports indicate that Iran is investigating methods to deploy cyber assaults to disrupt ballast systems—a threat to both ships and satellite networks. An unprecedented hack occurred in April, targeting 116 Iranian VSAT modems used for satellite communications across vessels.

“When discussing nation-states, it is about their willingness to act,” Vold states. Potential “threat actors” such as Russia and China possess substantial capabilities, though these depend on their strategic objectives, which may shift rapidly.

Consequently, while threat levels remain relatively stable, maritime vulnerabilities are on the rise. “The avenues for potential exploitation are multiplying as the sector grows more digital,” Vold remarks.

Norma Cyber has also pinpointed civilian vessels, including fishing boats, research ships, and cargo carriers, used for espionage within the Baltic, North Atlantic, and Arctic regions. China-linked threat actors are reportedly using USB devices to infiltrate maritime systems, such as those from Mustang Panda.

Last year, Norma Cyber documented 239 significant cyber attacks within the maritime sector, attributing the majority to the pro-Russian group NonAME057 (16).

The defiant peers have presented a significant challenge to the government. They urge artists to provide copyright protections for artificial intelligence companies, or they risk losing essential legal protections.

The government has encountered its fifth defeat in the House regarding a controversial initiative that would permit AI companies to train their models using copyrighted materials.

With a vote of 221-116 on Wednesday, they insisted on amendments that would enhance transparency regarding the materials used by AI companies for training their models.

Leading the opposition to the Lords’ changes is crossbench peer and film director Beeban Kidron, whose amendments consistently receive support from the upper chamber.

The data bill faces the likelihood of being shelved unless the Commons agrees to Kidron’s amendments or presents alternative solutions.

Maggie Jones, the minister for digital economy and online safety, urged her colleagues to vote against the Kidron amendment after the government proposed last-minute concessions to avoid another setback.

Before the vote, Jones stated that her colleagues “must decide whether to jeopardize the entire bill” and claimed that voting for Kidron’s amendment would “appear unprecedented”—attempting to disrupt a bill that does not undermine copyright law, while also addressing important issues like combating sexually explicit deepfake images.

Kidron told Piers: “This is the last chance to urge the government to implement meaningful solutions,” pressing the minister to take solid steps ensuring AI companies adhere to copyright regulations.

An Opportunity to Safeguard the UK’s Creative Industry from AI Threats is Slipping Away

For months, icons from various fields such as music, literature, product design, and visual arts have been sounding the alarm about the UK government’s plans to weaken copyright laws. The conflict escalated when the government started discussions about regulating artificial intelligence, leading to a “favorable” outcome for AI companies. Our amendments aim to uphold existing copyright laws, ensuring that copyright holders are informed about when, where, and by whom their work is used to train AI. The rationale is that if AI companies are required to prove their use of others’ work, they are less likely to infringe on rights in the first place. These amendments received substantial support from members across all parties, including notable backing from the government’s own backbenchers, as I voted in favor.

Ultimately, Secretary of State for Technology Peter Kyle had to face criticism in the House on Thursday. He acknowledged that “much content has already been utilized and is commonly employed by AI models under existing laws from other regions,” while ignoring the Lords’ provisions against such theft. He expressed admiration for artists like Kate Bush—one of over 400 supporters—along with Paul McCartney and Ian McKellen. I signed a letter to the Prime Minister urging policy changes; yet, no substantial changes were made. There remains a lack of transparency, no timeline, and no support for creatives.

This week, the government again missed the opportunity to rectify the situation for one of our largest industries, which employs 2.4 million people and contributes £126 billion to the economy, providing countless joys across the UK. No MPs rallied to defend the government. Instead, Kyle faced a barrage of criticism over his failure to manage the crisis. As one lawmaker put it, “One of our biggest industrial sectors is in flames, while the minister seems to be having a picnic with the arsonists.”

While the government could maneuver its way to passing specific legislation with its majority, such victories would spell disaster for the creative sector and the UK’s domestic AI economy. Ironically, he criticized the government’s approach in favor of major US corporations.

The UK creative industry is a vital part of our heritage, preserving our shared narratives and telling the story of our nation. A country that allows its storytellers to thrive is inherently stronger. Nevertheless, the battle is far from over—the Data (Usage and Access) Bill is scheduled to return to the Lords on June 2nd.

European Pharma Industry Struggles Amid Trump’s Tariff Threats

Opponents of Rio Tinto lithium mine targeted with anonymous death threats

circleWhen Aleksandar Matkovic initially received a life-threatening message, he believed it was a prank. The message, sent to his Telegram account just after midnight on August 14, stated, “We’re going to chase you until you disappear, you bastard,”.

“Initially, I brushed it off as a joke, but then the next morning I received another message: ‘How’s the fight against Rio Tinto going?’ It came from an unfamiliar profile, and the app indicated the sender was only 500 meters away,” recounted Matkovic, a prominent activist involved in protests against proposed lithium mines in Serbia. “Keep away,” he added.

While in Split visiting a friend, Matkovic, who resides in Belgrade, felt as though he was being followed, especially given the recent mass protests against Rio Tinto’s plan to construct a $2.4 billion lithium mine in Serbia’s Jadar Valley.

“I scanned the area and thought, ‘What is happening?’ It was unsettling, contemplating the possibility of someone tailing me, so I reached out to my lawyer. Soon thereafter, I received a third, more menacing message,” he shared.

The third message, written in German, stated: “We are aware of your ties to the leaders of the uprising. It all commenced with you. Even if you commit a heinous act and vanish, we will hunt you down. However, you won’t be able to turn to the authorities for help, because you know it’s futile. Rest assured, if you value your life and freedom, stay out of the public eye for some time. Conduct yourself impeccably on social media. Understand that you must fear for your safety and that of your sibling.”

Following this, Matkovic reported the threat to Belgrade police, who are presently investigating the matter based on the threat and related documents seen by the Guardian.

This rapidly evolving situation is intricate and carries repercussions beyond the Belgrade prosecutor’s office.

The opposition to the lithium mine in Serbia has evolved into a focal point for societal discontent, uniting ultranationalists, environmentalists, leftists, and individuals concerned about economic ties with the West and the domestic environment. Groundwater contamination is a pressing issue.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic recently issued a warning, accentuating the reported plotting of a “color revolution” by the opposition in the Balkans.

Serbia, a former Yugoslav republic, boasts substantial lithium reserves crucial for electric vehicle batteries. The EU has committed to banning a minimum of 10% of critical minerals, including lithium, from European mining operations by 2030.

Julia Poliscanova, director of vehicles and supply chains at the think tank Transport and Environment, emphasized the necessity of lithium for European transport electrification. She stressed the importance of sourcing lithium sustainably and responsibly to support Europe’s transition towards electric mobility.

In response to the threats against Matkovic, Rio Tinto denounced violence, affirming, “Rio Tinto vehemently condemns any direct or implicit threats of violence, whether online or in person, against individuals engaged in discussions regarding the Jadar project.”

Rio Tinto employees have faced online threats and intimidation during local protests, highlighted a company spokesperson.

To safeguard himself and his family following multiple distressing emails, Matkovic has taken precautions, including seeking refuge at various European embassies in Belgrade. Additionally, he intends to request intervention from the UN Special Rapporteur on environmental activists.

“Since August 14th, my life has been a precarious blend of normalcy and turmoil,” Matkovic reflected. “How does this fit into our strategy for combating climate change? What does the green transition we aspire to entail if it necessitates violence?”

First Glimpse of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 – 300GB Packed with Espionage, Undead Threats, and Historical Figures

After a string of layoffs and studio closures, the company tried to give gamers what they wanted at its Summer Game Fest on Sunday night, culminating with a 40-minute preview of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, a massive 300GB download. Like most recent Call of Duty titles, Black Ops 6 promises a bit of variety in the way you tackle its campaign missions. Most set pieces, whether they’re set in the glitzy casinos of southern Europe or the tundra of northern Russia, allow for guns blazing attacks or stealth approaches. There are also sequences where players can converse with NPCs to open up new possibilities, such as bribing a senator to grant access to forbidden areas. Familiar faces from the era will make an appearance, including Saddam Hussein, George Bush and Margaret Thatcher, and thankfully Activision has confirmed that at least the latter will be making an appearance. Call of Duty titles are typically developed in a quick two years, but with this game, co-developers Treyarch and Raven had double that time. “We had the opportunity to redefine what a Black Ops game is,” says associate design director Matt Scronce. “Every decision we made along the way allowed us to be very deliberate. Previously, each game built on the previous one, but with this game, we really built from the ground up and redefined Black Ops.”

One of the biggest changes to gamefeel is a new system called Omnidirection, which lets players sprint and slide in any direction. “Movement fluidity was a big thing we talked about a lot,” says Yale Miller, Senior Production Director at Treyarch. “That led to a desire to see what we could do.”

Scrance further explains, “Initially, we tried a 'jug', a quick side step. But when we thought about movement in Black Ops 6, it was all about keeping the player in the flow. It's about fluidity and fidelity, and something like a jug just didn't cut it. So we went back to the drawing board. For over 20 years, Call of Duty has only allowed you to sprint forward. So we looked to the best athletes in the real world: NFL players, NBA players, tennis players — players who can move quickly in all directions.”

Players can now sprint, dive, and slide with 360-degree movement, enabling a wider variety of evasive maneuvers. They can even roll onto their back and under cover, or recreate a classic move from Hong Kong action movies of the time: sliding backwards while shooting forward. According to the team, accessibility has also been a key factor. A new intelligent movement system has been introduced, adding crouch, sprint and mantle assist that can be toggled on/off. Players can choose to fully automate jumping over walls and sliding under low obstacles. This was inspired by a variety of games. “We looked at the Forza series with traction control, anti-lock and turn assist,” Scronce said. “Also, mobile games are a good example of this, where you don’t have physical buttons. So what do they do?” The HUD is now also customizable, allowing players to move around on-screen information such as the minimap. This is a feature created with Call of Duty streamers in mind. They often want to add their own camera view in the game and have a hard time deciding where to place it without obscuring important information.

Key multiplayer components have been heavily tweaked, undoing some recent changes. There are 16 new maps, most of which feature the traditional three-lane design, while the Prestige system, which allows seasoned veteran players to show off their prowess with exclusive outfits, accessories, and classified weapons, has returned to the style of previous Black Ops games. Treyarch is also promising a vast arsenal of firearms from the era, with dozens of attachments.

Meanwhile, the regular Call of Duty zombies mode is returning to its roots, which Treyarch first introduced with World at War back in 2008. While the most recent Modern Warfare title introduced a new type of open-world zombie game, Black Ops 6 returns to the older round-based structure, where players work together to survive wave after wave of the undead while unlocking new weapons and exploring confined environments.

The Call of Duty monster truck continues to roll, accompanied by concerns about the appropriation of recent historical events, the glorification of U.S. foreign policy, and an enthusiasm for military-grade weaponry. But like the best blockbuster war movies, the game has its charms, and Black Ops 6 seems to bring some interesting additions to the series’ atmosphere. Which may point to the benefits of giving the studio a bit more time. Scrance said: “Overall, the extra time allowed us to pay more attention to detail and really push the character fidelity, movement, animations, audio, multiplayer maps, and so on, to a point where we can all say this is the best we’ve ever made.”
