Donald Trump and Elon Musk: A Potential Challenge for Science in 2025

One of the most iconic images of 2025 features billionaire Elon Musk, a special adviser in President Donald Trump’s administration, brandishing a gleaming red chainsaw and proclaiming a message about reducing federal funding. This heavy-handed metaphor captured the impending cuts that would have profound impacts on scientific funding, leading to the cancellation of space missions and critical public health and climate programs.

President Trump’s rapid dismantling of decades of American leadership in science has been astonishing, with effects likely to last far longer than anticipated. It began with fervor—just a week after Trump took office in January, he signed an order that temporarily halted grants and loans from federal agencies. This led to thousands of NIH grants being suspended or terminated, which is one of the world’s leading biomedical research funders. According to Grant Witness, a platform tracking changes in federal funding during the Trump era, the contraction in funding from entities such as NIH and NSF totals nearly $3 billion.

Following that initial wave, Musk led an independent task force known as the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which was charged with slashing government expenditures. While DOGE aimed to cut costs across the federal landscape, many of its moves directly impacted scientists and researchers. There were significant job cuts at agencies such as the CDC, NASA, the EPA, and the NOAA, among others. In October, the Trump administration announced additional cuts targeting major scientific institutions including the US Geological Survey and the National Park Service, which play crucial roles in monitoring the health of the nation’s agriculture and natural resources and protecting biodiversity.

This all reflects a sweeping policy overhaul during Trump’s presidency. Since WWII, the U.S. has championed scientific research as a pillar of progress and prosperity, a notion conceptualized in the 1940s by the architects of the Office of Scientific Research and Development, the predecessor to the NSF. This ethos, dubbed the “Endless Frontier,” was a revolutionary framework for establishing global leadership in research and technology development. Trump’s administration has systematically dismantled it.

Not only did Trump shrink federal research agencies, but his administration pressured universities to ensure their educational and research agendas reflected government interests. Moreover, he took aggressive actions against established scientific principles. Almost predictably, Trump initiated the withdrawal of the U.S. from the Paris Agreement, the preeminent global accord on climate change, shortly after assuming office. Later that year, during a speech at the UN, he labeled climate change “the largest fraud ever perpetrated” and maligned renewable energy as “scams.”

Unsatisfied with these actions, the Trump administration also dismantled key climate data resources and reports previously generated by the government. Staff reductions in many scientific organizations led to the cancellation of essential climate teleconferences at NOAA, and crucial assessments like the U.S. National Climate Assessment were halted. Remaining personnel adhered to Trump’s narrative—for instance, NOAA scientists shocked external climate experts when they dismissed connections between global warming and climate change earlier this year.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. doubts established scientific views

Furthermore, public health records saw significant damage. In April, key scientists running the National Survey on Drug Use and Health were dismissed. Later, layoffs occurred at the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which monitors nationwide food security to guide aid allocation. The National Center for Health Statistics also faced cuts, significantly undermining its ability to track important metrics such as births, deaths, and maternal health. The National Death Index was also minimized, eliminating a vital resource for public health studies.

Health policy has become especially murky and devoid of evidence due to President Trump’s selection of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as head of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Kennedy, a longtime vaccine skeptic, presided over more than 10,000 layoffs in government agencies and fueled conflict with public health authorities, leading to many resignations. He perpetuated the discredited notion that vaccines cause autism and even promoted the unfounded claim that Tylenol during pregnancy contributes to autism. In June, President Kennedy bypassed standard procedures to inform that the CDC would no longer endorse COVID-19 vaccinations for children and pregnant individuals. His leadership has embedded the U.S. anti-vaccine movement within the government, damaging public trust in health institutions post-COVID-19.

Under Trump, the U.S. is also retreating from its leadership role in space exploration. Although the president’s budget request delivered in May hasn’t yet been enacted, it hints at a 47% cut to NASA that would stifle scientific progress and eliminate various missions, including ones already underway. For instance, samples collected from Mars by the Perseverance rover will not return to Earth, the Da Vinci probe intended to study Venus will not land, and the Osiris-Apex spacecraft will not gather data on an asteroid, vital for tracking potential threats to Earth. Additionally, NASA is experiencing leadership turmoil, with the U.S. Secretary of Transportation unsuccessfully attempting to manage it, compounded by President Trump’s inconsistent support for his nomination of billionaire Jared Isaacman.

The private sector is also gaining influence amid the Trump administration’s policies. Major tech companies are attempting to forge closer ties with the administration, showcasing their executives at various functions and providing lavish gifts during Trump’s inauguration. They may be looking to gain favor, as evidenced by a new $300 million ballroom in the White House. Their motives could involve seeking exemptions from antitrust regulations or simply reaping the benefits of relaxed environmental standards, while also pushing for developing major data centers for AI projects.

Nearly a year into Trump’s second term, the outlook for scientific progress remains unclear, particularly since the 2026 federal budget is still pending Congressional approval. Even if all proposed cuts do not pass, the administration’s erratic and often antagonistic stance toward science and its practitioners could result in further turmoil, prompting more scientists to exit the U.S. and diminishing critical funding for research essential for public health and ecological sustainability. The demise of the Endless Frontier will reduce America’s global influence, with consequences likely to be felt for years, if not decades.

Welcome to the peculiar realm of human challenge testing – arriving soon at a biosecure isolation facility nearby.

In response to the collective trauma of the coronavirus pandemic, researchers are increasingly enlisting healthy individuals to participate in trials that intentionally expose them to illness. Volunteers are now more willing than ever to contract diseases ranging from dysentery and cholera to gonorrhea.

As detailed on page 38, clinical trials offer a rapid and relatively affordable method for assessing vaccines and treatments while monitoring infection dynamics. Contrary to popular belief, the risks may not be as high as presumed. Trials, conducted under stringent medical oversight, will only proceed if effective therapies can quickly alleviate symptoms.


Deliberately infecting healthy volunteers carries risks, and the ethical implications are complex.

However, it’s not without its hazards, and the ethical landscape remains murky. Unlike patients with existing conditions who may opt for experimental therapies that could potentially cure them, challenge trials seek to induce illness with little or no immediate medical benefit, even if for a brief duration.

Moreover, we cannot always prevent potential long-term consequences. For example, some ethicists have expressed concerns regarding the manner in which British scientists conducted COVID-19 challenge trials during the pandemic, underscoring the risks of chronic symptoms associated with COVID-19.

Nonetheless, the pandemic has also underscored the significant positive impact and value of vaccines. Current data indicates that human challenge testing is safe, particularly for young, healthy individuals. These studies could hasten the development of new defenses against persistent epidemics such as malaria, Zika, and norovirus. The pressing question may be: How can we expand these efforts?

The Growing Size of Cars: A Challenge for Us and the Planet

Living in the UK, you might have observed a rise in the number of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and large vehicles on our roads. These vehicles represented 63% of new car sales in the UK last year, a stark increase from just 12% in 2010.

On a global scale, this figure hovers around 48% and shows no signs of decreasing. This trend is concerning, as larger vehicles mean greater risks. My research focuses on the intersection of transportation and health, and recently, I collaborated on a study featured in BMJ. We believe regional, national, and international strategies are essential to limit the sale of these vehicles.

The principal health hazards associated with cars include road risks, pollution, and the tendency for people to choose driving over walking or cycling, which are more beneficial for health. Heavier cars negatively impact all these factors.

Intuitively, the risk of injury from a large vehicle is more pronounced. Their front ends are tall and blunt compared to standard cars; this is problematic for cyclists and pedestrians. Last year, I was involved in a review analyzing studies on the interactions between SUVs and vulnerable road users. The findings indicated that adults struck by SUVs face a 44% higher mortality risk than those hit by standard cars. The review also estimates that in the U.S., about 10% of pedestrian and cyclist casualties could be avoided by substituting SUVs with smaller vehicles—translating to roughly 1,700 preventable deaths or serious injuries annually.

Additionally, cars are becoming wider, a phenomenon dubbed “car spreading.” European new cars now grow, on average, by 0.5 cm each year. With limited road space devoted to cars, there’s increasingly less for cyclists and pedestrians. Encouraging more people to walk or bike would offer significant health benefits. Larger cars not only diminish these advantages but also contribute to urban congestion.

The larger size of these vehicles exacerbates air pollution issues. While the shift toward electric vehicles is promising for reducing emissions, it’s crucial to note that even electric SUVs create particulate pollution from tires and brakes, a major contributor to urban air quality concerns. Heavier vehicles produce more tire and brake wear, meaning electric SUVs may not offer the same air quality benefits as smaller electric cars.

So, what can we do to mitigate the proliferation of these large, hazardous, and polluting SUVs? My colleagues and I propose several strategies. Many cities now implement clean air zones—London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone is one example. While not specifically targeting vehicle size, such zones urge people to consider pollution from older, larger cars. Recently, the Cardiff council decided to charge extra for residential parking permits for SUV owners, joining cities like Paris and several in Germany and France that have raised parking costs for larger vehicles.

Beyond parking fees, governments might rethink car taxes to incentivize smaller vehicle purchases. Imposing higher taxes on heavier cars would align with societal costs related to road danger and pollution.

While some individuals may have legitimate needs for larger vehicles, with SUVs representing nearly half of all new car sales, we must recognize the health risks they pose. For improved road safety and cleaner air, buyers need to weigh these factors and governments must adjust regulations to reflect the dangers and environmental impacts of these vehicles.

The Human Mind’s Aversion to Uncertainty: A Challenge for Liberal Democracies

The exploration of the dynamics within liberal democracies has typically emphasized economic, emotional, and educational influences. However, an additional field of neurology plays a critical role.

Liberal democracies engage our cognitive processes differently than authoritarian regimes. Dictatorships provide a sense of predictability, exemplified by Adolf Hitler’s envisioned timeline, while liberal democracies leave the future open to our choices, presenting it as a canvas we shape ourselves.

This is politically significant yet cognitively daunting. Historically, the future was dictated by a select few, prioritizing preservation over progress. The inherent ambiguity and adaptability of liberal democracy can challenge individuals neurologically, as uncertainty is a state the human mind often resists. Studies indicate that uncertainty triggers more anxiety than the anticipation of an electric shock, leading to various historical attempts to diminish uncertainty through mechanisms like insurance and weather forecasting.

Your position on the spectrum of uncertainty tolerance is influenced by cultural background, age, and gender, as well as neurological factors. Research in political neuroscience reveals that conservative brains lean towards security, generally steering clear of conclusions that lack clarity. This tendency is associated with a larger amygdala, the brain region linked to threat detection, resulting in a heightened discomfort when confronted with the unfamiliar.

On the other hand, a liberal brain exhibits greater gray matter in the anterior cingulate cortex, a region involved in processing ambiguity. This anatomical difference enables liberals to tolerate uncertainty and confrontation more effectively. Liberal democracies can provide space for both perspectives under less stressful conditions. Although conservatives and liberals may have distinct neural predispositions regarding their preferences for the future, evolutionarily, all humans share the ability to envision multiple futures.

However, increased uncertainty can push some individuals beyond their comfort zones, particularly as the future of pressing issues—like environmental change, technology, and social norms—becomes less predictable. To cope with this anxiety, some individuals gravitate towards populist and authoritarian political leaders, committing to rigid decision-making and a black-and-white perspective. They often seek certainty—howbeit a mere illusion—by rejecting innovations (such as medical advancements) or dismissing foreign cultures and religions, thus limiting uncertainty and suppressing potential futures. This obsession with ambiguity and anxiety can create a more tranquil mindset for those affected.

This doesn’t imply a total surrender to an illiberal mindset. Instead, it underscores the necessity for liberal democracies to candidly inform their constituents that embracing liberalism may not come intuitively. Educational initiatives, public discourse, and civil engagement must derive insights into overcoming illiberal tendencies at a brain-based level.

We must communicate the collective benefits of cooperation in various domains, including identity. Ultimately, only through collaboratively addressing the vulnerabilities inherent in our brains can we tackle the significant global challenges we face today.

Planetary Scientists Challenge Marine Origin of Organic Molecules in Enceladus’ Plumes

The magnetosphere of Saturn is filled with trapped plasma and energy-charged particles that consistently bombard the surface of Enceladus. This plasma mainly consists of charged particles, including water group ions created from high-energy electrons interacting with materials from the plumes. Instruments on NASA’s Cassini spacecraft reveal that on Saturn’s inner icy moons, such as Mimas and Tethys, cold plasma irradiation results in darker reflection spectra and produces blue-tinted features on their surfaces. In contrast, the consequences of plasma bombardment on Enceladus remain largely unexplored and challenging to assess.

“The discovery of complex organic molecules in Enceladus’s environment is crucial for evaluating lunar habitability, indicating that radiation-driven chemistry on the surface and within plumes can yield these molecules.”

The Enceladus plume was first identified in 2005 by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft.

These plumes emerge from a long fracture known as the “Tiger Stripes” located in Enceladus’s Antarctic region.

Originating from a subsurface ocean, the water’s energy to create plumes and heat the ocean arises from gravitational tidal forces exerted by the massive Saturn, which deforms Enceladus’s interior.

Cassini flew through the plume, “sampling” the molecules present, which were found to be rich in salts and a variety of organic compounds.

These findings have captivated astrobiologists since organic compounds found dissolved in underground oceans could lead to prebiotic molecules, the building blocks of life.

However, new insights suggest that radiation from Saturn’s powerful magnetosphere could also contribute to the formation of these organic compounds on Enceladus’s icy surface, prompting questions about their astrobiological significance.

In their research, Dr. Richards and colleagues replicated the ice composition on the surface and along the striped walls of Enceladus’s tiger.

This ice comprises water, carbon dioxide, methane, and ammonia, which were cooled to -200 degrees Celsius.

The researchers then bombarded the ice with ions to mimic the radiation environment surrounding Enceladus.

The interaction of ions with ice components generated various molecular species, including carbon monoxide, cyanate, and ammonium.

It also produced precursor molecules for amino acids, which could support metabolic reactions, aid in cell repair, and facilitate the formation of proteins that transport nutrients in living organisms.

Some of these compounds have been previously identified on Enceladus’s surface, while others were detected in feathers.

“Molecules deemed prebiotic do not necessarily originate from subterranean oceans but can instead form in situ via radiation exposure,” noted Dr. Richards.

“This does not dismiss the potential for the Enceladus seas to be habitable, but it emphasizes the need for caution when interpreting the plume’s composition.”

“Distinguishing between ocean-derived organic matter and molecules formed through radiation interactions with the surface and tiger stripes is extremely complex.”

“Additional data from future missions will be essential, including proposals for the Enceladus mission currently under review as part of the ESA’s Navigation 2050 recommendations for the science program.”

The team’s survey results were announced earlier this month during the EPSC-DPS2025 Joint Meeting in Helsinki, Finland.

The new archetype feature in Club and Player Career Modes lets players design and create individuals across 13 types (including categories such as Magician, Recycler, Boss, etc.). This is reminiscent of character classes in RPGs, allowing players to earn experience points throughout their careers and upgrade stats. Additionally, the Manager Live Career Mode allows you to lead head coaches through multiple seasons, pulling from live service inspirations like Fortnite. Weekly challenges occur throughout the year, encouraging players to set targets, such as topping the Christmas league. Some features are inspired by real-life sports unpredictability. During the demo presentation, Pete O’Donnell, Design Director of Career Mode, highlighted an intriguing scenario: a food poisoning outbreak affecting the Italian Serie B team Salernitana at the end of the last season. The most beloved aspect of the game, Ultimate Team, has received an array of new features. The controversial Panini sticker-style fantasy football mode allows players to create teams by opening randomized digital packs, where competitors engage in live tournament modes with linked competitions throughout the season. Crested Diapsid Reptiles from the Central Triassic Challenge Current Theories of Wing Evolution

Paleontologists have identified a novel genus and species of Triassic derepanosauromorph diapsid showcasing remarkable appendages (not feathers or skin). This discovery is based on two exceptionally well-preserved skeletal structures and related specimens. Their research reveals that wings and hair-like extensions are not exclusive to birds and mammals.

Feathers and hair are intricate outer body appendages of vertebrates, serving essential functions such as insulation, sensory support, display, and facilitating flight.

The development of feathers and hair traces back to the ancestral lines of birds and mammals, respectively.

However, the genetic frameworks responsible for these appendages may have origins deeper within the amniotic lineage, encompassing various animal branches, including those of birds and mammals.

The Triassic reptile species outlined by Dr. Stephan Spiekman from the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart and his collaborators featured unique appendages that could reach up to 15.3 cm (6 inches) in length along their backs.

Named Mirasaura Grabogeli, this peculiar creature inhabited Europe approximately 247 million years ago.

The species exhibited a superficially bird-like skull but was classified within the Diapsid group known as Drepanosauromorpha.

Discovered in northeastern France in the 1930s, Mirasaura Grabogeli comprises 80 specimens featuring two well-preserved skeletal structures with isolated appendages and preserved soft tissues. Recent preparations have led to its identification.

“This enabled the connection between the summit and skeleton,” the paleontologist noted.

“The tissue preserved within the appendages contains melanosomes (pigment-producing cells located in skin, fur, and feathers), resembling those found in feathers more closely than in reptilian skin or mammalian hair, yet lacking the typical branching pattern of feathers.”

“These observations suggest that such complex appendages might have evolved among reptiles prior to the emergence of birds and their closest relatives, potentially offering new insights into the development of feathers and hair.”

Given the characteristics of the appendages observed in Mirasaura Grabogeli, we dismissed their roles in flight or camouflage, proposing instead a possible role in visual communication (signaling or predator deterrence).

The team’s research paper was published today in the journal Nature.

Apple Files Lawsuit to Challenge “Unprecedented” €500 Million EU Fine Related to App Store

Apple has initiated an appeal against the “unprecedented” €500 million (£430 million) fine imposed by the EU in the latest confrontation between US tech giants and Brussels.

The iPhone manufacturer has accused the European Commission (the EU’s executive body) of exceeding legal boundaries in the ongoing dispute regarding the App Store.

In April, the EU fined Apple €500 million after determining that the company infringed the Digital Markets Act by hindering app developers from offering cheaper transactions outside of the App Store.


Last month, Apple revised its App Store policies to comply with EU directives, adjusting technical and commercial terms for developers to avert a potential daily penalty of 5% of average earnings—approximately €50 million each day.

Consequently, Apple has launched a new pricing model for App Store developers. On Monday, the company accused Brussels of using “confusing” business language to sidestep the risk of fines.

“We are appealing today because we believe the European Commission’s decision and its extraordinary fines exceed what the law demands,” Apple stated, announcing its appeal to the General Court, the EU’s second-highest tribunal. “Our appeal highlights that the EC is dictating how we manage our stores, leading to confusion among developers and unfavorable conditions for users.”

Apple also charged the Commission with unlawfully broadening its interpretation of “steering,” impacting the language and methods developers can use to direct consumers outside the App Store.

The company highlighted that EU regulators have altered their definitions, not only questioning if app developers can link to outside websites but also if in-app promotions are permissible.

Peter Navarro, former senior trade adviser to Donald Trump, criticized the EU for employing “laws” against prominent US tech firms, describing the regulatory actions against American entities like Apple and Meta as part of a series of “non-tariff weapons” against the US.

In March, Hectan Wilkunen, vice president of the European Commission, asserted that the EU would maintain technical regulations to avoid compromising a trade deal with the US. In January, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg accused the EU of “institutionalizing censorship” through digital regulations.

Trump established a deadline of July 9th, sealing a trade arrangement with the EU, which also involves a threat of imposing a 50% tariff on the US if no agreement is finalized.

Tom Smith, a competitive attorney at Geradin Partners and former legal director of the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, stated that Apple “fundamentally disapproves” of the changes implemented in the App Store.

“The stark reality is that the company is willing to invest millions in legal fees to obstruct and delay the establishment of a more open app ecosystem.”

Peers Vote to Challenge Government Over AI-Related Copyright Threats

The defiant peers have presented a significant challenge to the government. They urge artists to provide copyright protections for artificial intelligence companies, or they risk losing essential legal protections.

The government has encountered its fifth defeat in the House regarding a controversial initiative that would permit AI companies to train their models using copyrighted materials.

With a vote of 221-116 on Wednesday, they insisted on amendments that would enhance transparency regarding the materials used by AI companies for training their models.

At the awards event following the vote, Elton John emphasized that copyright protection is an “existential issue” for artists and called on the government to “do the right thing.”

He remarked: “We will not let the government forget their promise to support the creative industry. We will not retreat, and we will not go quietly. This is just the beginning.”

Wednesday night’s vote highlights the ongoing conflict between the Commons and the Lords over a data bill utilized by campaigners to challenge the government’s proposed copyright reforms.

Leading the opposition to the Lords’ changes is crossbench peer and film director Beeban Kidron, whose amendments consistently receive support from the upper chamber.

The data bill faces the likelihood of being shelved unless the Commons agrees to Kidron’s amendments or presents alternative solutions.

Maggie Jones, the minister for digital economy and online safety, urged her colleagues to vote against the Kidron amendment after the government proposed last-minute concessions to avoid another setback.

Before the vote, Jones stated that her colleagues “must decide whether to jeopardize the entire bill” and claimed that voting for Kidron’s amendment would “appear unprecedented”—attempting to disrupt a bill that does not undermine copyright law, while also addressing important issues like combating sexually explicit deepfake images.

Kidron told Piers: “This is the last chance to urge the government to implement meaningful solutions,” pressing the minister to take solid steps ensuring AI companies adhere to copyright regulations.

“It is unfair and irrational for the creative industry to suffer at the hands of those who take their jobs and assets. It’s not neutral.”

“We have repeatedly asked both houses: What is the government doing to protect creative jobs from being stolen? There has been no response.”

Several peers criticized the notion that the Lords’ actions were unprecedented, arguing that the government itself is breaking precedent by refusing to compromise. Tim Clement Jones, a Liberal Democrat spokesman for the digital economy, voiced strong support for Kidron’s amendments.

The Lords’ amendments place the data bill in a state of double claims, indicating that both the Commons and the Lords are unable to agree on the legislation. Under this circumstance, the bill will be dropped unless ministers accept the rebellious revisions or offer other changes through parliamentary processes. Although the bill’s failure is uncommon, it has occurred before, notably in the 1997-98 session regarding the European Parliament election bill.

According to parliamentary tradition, the Commons holds a favorable position as the elected House, and in rare situations, if the Lords refuse to concede, the minister can utilize parliamentary law to enact the bill in the following session, which may significantly delay the legislation.

As a concession to the peers on Tuesday night, the government pledged to release additional technical reports on the future of AI and copyright regulations within nine months, rather than the previously proposed twelve.

“Many peers have expressed experiencing a lack of hearing during ping pong,” Jones noted in her letter.

Jones pointed out that by updating the Data Protection Act, the data bill is projected to yield £10 billion in economic benefits, enhancing online safety and strengthening the authority to require social media companies to retain data following a child’s death.

Kidron asserted: “It would be wise for the government to accept the amendment or propose something meaningful in its place. They have failed to listen to the Lords, to the creative sector, and even to their own supporters.”

Under the proposed government regulations, AI companies would be authorized to train their models using copyrighted works unless the owners specifically opt out. This plan has garnered heavy criticism from creators and publishers, including renowned artists such as Paul McCartney and Tom Stoppard.

Technology Secretary Peter Kyle expressed regret over the decision to initiate consultations regarding the opt-out system associated with changes to copyright laws as a “priority option,” indicating that there may be resistance within Downing Street to make more concessions.

On Wednesday, OpenAI confirmed its intention to buy IO, an unproven hardware startup co-founded by Jony Ive, for $6.4 billion. Ancient Reptile Footprints Challenge Theories on Land Animal Evolution Timing

Researchers in Australia have discovered the oldest known fossil footprint of reptile-like animals, dating back roughly 350 million years ago.

This discovery implies that the first animals began emerging from the oceans around 400 million years ago and adapted to terrestrial life much quicker than previously thought.

Stuart Smida, a paleontologist from California State University, remarked, “I believed the transition from fins to limbs took more time.”

Before this, the oldest known reptile footprints were found in Canada and dated to 318 million years ago.

The ancient footprints were uncovered in sandstone slabs near Melbourne, revealing reptile-like feet with elongated toes and claws.

Scientists estimate that the creature was about 2.5 feet long (80 cm) and might resemble a modern monitor lizard. These findings were published on Wednesday in the journal Nature.

Co-authors and paleontologists, including Arlberg from Uppsala University in Sweden, indicated that the evidence showcases the identification of nails surrounding the footprint.

“It’s a walking animal,” he stated.

Only animals that evolved to live entirely on land developed the claws seen in these fossils. Earlier vertebrates, such as fish and amphibians, did not have hard claws and depended on aquatic environments for laying eggs.

In contrast, branches of the evolutionary tree leading to modern reptiles, birds, and mammals, known as amniotes, developed feet equipped with claws suited for traversing dry ground.

Smida commented, “This is the earliest evidence we’ve encountered of animals with claws.”

During the time these ancient reptiles existed, the environment was warm and humid, with expansive forests beginning to take shape. Australia was then part of the supercontinent Gondwana.

The fossil footprints tell a story of a day in the life, Ahlberg explained. A reptile fled across the ground before light rain; some rain droplets lightly obscured the tracks. Subsequently, two more reptiles dashed in opposing directions before the ground hardened and became covered with sediment.

Senators Challenge Government AI Initiatives

Baroness Kidron stated: “We aim to refute the idea that those opposing government initiatives are against technology. Creators acknowledge the creative and economic benefits of AI, but we dispute the notion that AI should be developed for free using works that were appropriated.”

“My Lords, this poses a substantial threat to the British economy, impacting sectors worth £120 billion. The UK thrives in industries central to our industrial strategy and significant cultural contributions.”

The government’s copyright proposal is currently under reviews in this year’s report, but opponents are using the data bill as a platform to voice their objections.

Embracing the Challenge: Bringing Shadows of Assassin’s Creed and Feudal Japan to Life in Gaming

mFour years after its announcement, and after two last minute delays, the latest title from Ubisoft’s historic fiction series Assassin’s Creed will finally be released on Thursday. Set in Japan in 1579, the period of intense civil war ruled by feudal Oda Bunaga follows two characters overcoming bloody chaos. A female ninja named Fujiwarajima Island and an African slave Yasusuke became samurai. According to Ubisoft, Japan is the series’ most requested setting for many years.

Apple’s UK Legal Challenge on Cryptography: Secrets Unveiled in Closed Room

The legal battle between the US tech company and the UK government over access to customer data saw a closed-door hearing on Friday after the press was unable to enter the courtroom for the lawsuit.

Apple has appealed to the Investigation Power Court after the Home Office requested access to encrypted data stored on Apple’s cloud servers.

British media outlets such as The Guardian, The BBC, The Financial Times, and Computer Weekly tried to gain access to the court for public interest reasons but were denied entry.

The government’s representative in the case, Sir James Eady KC, was seen entering the court on Friday.

Apple is contesting technical capacity notices issued under the Investigation Powers Act, which require assistance from businesses in providing evidence to law enforcement. The notice requested access to Apple’s Advanced Data Protection (ADP) service, which encrypts personal data stored remotely on a server.

Apple refused to comply with the order and challenged it in court, raising concerns about the legality of the national intelligence agency’s actions. Apple also pulled ADP from the UK, stating they have never created backdoor keys or master keys for their products or services.

ADP employs end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the account owner can decrypt the data. Messaging services like iMessage and FaceTime are also end-to-end encrypted by default.

The government’s legal demands, known as Technical Capacity Notices, prohibit recipients from disclosing the order unless authorized by the Secretary of the Interior. Court hearings are supposed to be closed to the public only if strictly necessary to protect national security.

A bipartisan group of US lawmakers called for transparency regarding the UK government’s orders and urged further hearings and proceedings to shed light on the issue.

Reports suggest that British officials have started discussions with US counterparts to ensure that they are not seeking blanket access to US data, only information related to serious crimes like terrorism and child sexual abuse.

Chinese Jurassic bird fossils challenge traditional theories of bird evolution.

Excavated in southeastern China, fossils of Jurassic birds are said to have a significant impact on the history of bird evolution, according to researchers.

The recently discovered Baminolis Zengensis, a bird the size of a quail, flew in the skies approximately 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period. A study about it was published on Wednesday in the Nature Journal. In essence, it is one of the oldest known birds to humanity, alongside the iconic Archeopteryx found in Germany in 1862 and of a similar age.

“For over 150 years, Archeopteryx has stood alone,” said Steve Bursatte, a paleontologist at the University of Edinburgh. Further explanation on the research accompanied this statement.

“All this time, it has remained as the sole unsuspecting bird fossil from the Jurassic era,” he mentioned to NBC News via email.

While other bird-like Jurassic fossils were found, there was a “significant mystery and frustrating gap” in the fossil record, according to Bursatte. So, where were their fossils?

The 2023 discovery of Baminornis in Zhenghe County, Fujian Province, China, filled that gap and became one of the most important discoveries since Archeopteryx, labeling it as “the second unsuspecting bird from the Jurassic era.”

Unlike the half-bird, half-reptile that had a long, thin tail resembling a velociraptor, Baminonis had a short tail where some vertebrae fused into short, sturdy nubins pushing the body center towards the wings, similar to modern birds for better flying.

Until the discovery of Baminoris, short tails were only found in birds known to have lived around 20 million years later, such as Eoconfuciusornis and Protopteryx.

Brusatte expressed excitement that Baminoris was more advanced than Archeopteryx and could fly much better.

Baminornis was more anatomically complex than Archeopteryx, being a “primitive” bird with claws and sharp teeth resembling dinosaur ancestors.

The discovery of two similarly aged birds about 5,500 miles apart led the nature research team to believe that bird evolution took place millions of years earlier than previously thought.

In addition to dozens of fossils of aquatic or semi-aquatic animals, the Zhenghe Fauna collection included at least three Aviaran fossils, enriching the understanding of early diversification and filling important gaps in the evolutionary history of terrestrial ecosystems towards the end of the Jurassic era according to researchers.

Baminornis fossils preserved most of the skeleton, but the wings were not preserved, leaving questions about their size and wing structure. The lack of a skull also limits clues regarding their diet.

Nevertheless, Baminornis suggests that various birds lived during the Jurassic period and flew in different ways,” Brusatte said.

Parents file lawsuit against Tiktok for alleged role in child’s death from “Blackout Challenge”

The parents of four teenagers in England have filed a lawsuit against Tiktok following the tragic death of their children.

Isaac Kennevan (13), Archie Buttersby (12), Julian “Juls” Sweeney (14), and 13-year-old Maia Walsh, who rose to fame on social media in 2021, tragically lost their lives in 2022 while attempting a dangerous “challenge,” as stated in the lawsuit.

The Social Media Victims Law Center based in the US lodged a wrongful death lawsuit against Tiktok and its parent company Baitedan on behalf of the grieving parents.

Matthew Bergman, the founding attorney for the Social Media Victims Law Center, revealed, “Three of the four children succumbed to self-stable after being exposed to the hazardous Tiktok Blackout Challenge, all from a similar city and demographic. This does not seem coincidental.”

Bergman further claimed, “Tiktok deliberately targets these vulnerable children with perilous content to boost engagement and profit. The deliberate business decision by Tiktok cost the lives of these four children.”

Tiktok has asserted that searches related to the challenge have been restricted since 2020 and they strive to ban and eliminate harmful content promptly. They also direct users to their safety center if they search for related keywords or videos.

The lawsuit, on behalf of Archie’s mother Holly Dance, Isaac’s mother Lisa Kennevan, Juls’ mother Ellenroom, and Maia’s father Liam Walsh, was filed in the Superior Court of Delaware.

The lawsuit accused Tiktok of marketing itself as a safe and fun platform for children while promoting dangerous and addictive content. Tiktok allegedly engaged children with risky challenges to increase revenue.

Tiktok dismissed claims that they allowed the Blackout Challenge on their platform, asserting that they are actively working to address such issues. However, other perilous challenges involving drugs, hot water, and fire have emerged on Tiktok.

The lawsuit also highlighted that parents believed Tiktok was harmless, catering to children’s entertainment, without anticipating mental health repercussions.

The Social Media Victims Law Center represents families affected by harmful social media content, aiming to prevent the promotion of harmful videos, including those depicting suicide or self-harm, especially among children.

One of the cases involved Tawainna Anderson suing Tiktok in 2022 after her daughter Naira, aged 10, participated in the Blackout Challenge. The appeals court reinstated her case in August 2024.

Archie’s cause of death was determined to be accidental experimentation at his home, with the Blackout Challenge cited as a potential factor among many others.

Juls’ mother is advocating for parents to have legal rights to access their children’s social media accounts following the tragic loss of her son in 2022.

Review: Lonely Mountains: Snow Rider Offers an Exciting Skiing Challenge with Some Thrilling Twists

I was captivated by Lonely Mountains: Downhill, a simplistic mountain biking game that was released in 2019. obsessed I played those tracks repeatedly until I mastered the art of braking, skidding a tire on a rock, getting stuck in a tire and being flung off, speeding down a straight path, and carefully navigating over ledges. For years, I had eagerly anticipated the release of a snow sports-themed sequel. Instead of sun, rocks, and dirt, there was now glistening snow, and bicycles were replaced with skis. It seemed unbelievable at first, but after a few initial runs on the snowy mountains, I humbly realized I had a lot to learn. I struggled with turns while applying the brakes, found myself sliding backward on hills, constantly bumped into trees, missed jumps, and tumbled across frozen lakes in confusion. The challenges in each course seemed daunting, and my first multiplayer race was a humiliating experience.

However, after a few hours of practice, I found myself gracefully carving through more challenging courses while immersing myself in the soothing sounds of snow. Achieving a seamless run down the mountain, with the wind in my ears, felt exhilarating. But when I missed a turn and ended up in a ditch, the enchantment was quickly shattered, prompting me to return to the checkpoint and start over.

This rhythm of triumph and failure still resonates with me in Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders. The minimalist soundscape, visually stunning representation of natural landscapes, and the sense of achievement from conquering a course remain as captivating as ever. While there are areas that could be improved, such as adding more customization options for the skier, the high difficulty from the start and precise controls pose challenges for new players in progressing through the mountain. Additionally, the introduction of multiplayer racing and team skiing comes with its own set of drawbacks.

Currently, the multiplayer aspect is plagued by technical issues shortly after release. When multiple players appear on screen at once, such as at the start of a race, the game experiences shaking or freezing temporarily. In a game where every millisecond counts, losing control, even momentarily, can make it unbearable to play. I encountered crashes while loading courses, got kicked out of multiplayer games, and saw other players mysteriously lose connection. While these issues may be addressed by developers in the future, for now, they remain a hindrance to the overall experience. The core problem lies in the wide variability of player skill levels.

In an 8-player race, 3 participants may swiftly descend the mountain within 3-4 minutes, while others take considerably longer. Once you cross the finish line, you can either skate aimlessly or watch lower-ranked players struggle in the same section repeatedly. This can be disheartening, especially if you happen to be the unlucky last player.

The team mode requires cooperation to navigate mountains, set checkpoints, and revive fallen players, but the concept seemed lost on the players I encountered. Meredith Whittaker practices what she preaches: As president of the Signal Foundation, she’s a vocal advocate for privacy for all. But she doesn’t just spout empty words.

But Whittaker argues that some of Signal’s strongest critics seem inconsistent about what they care about: “If they are really interested in helping children, why are Britain’s schools collapsing? This is a great book that will make you think more about games. I usually don’t really think through my decisions because the hellish timer is counting down and the aliens are chasing me.

The book gives an example from Mass Effect 3 where you decide whether to save Admiral Corris and his five-man crew from the geth. It’s a matter of utilitarian philosophy — “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few” — and the curveball thrown at us is that if we rescue the crew and let them die, a bunch of officers will panic. This is because they fall into a trap, lose their collective consciousness, and fly towards them. Doom Killing has more than the original five.

But the downside of the game as a thought experiment for me is that this wasn’t that hard of a decision. As a gamer, I knew that saving Collis would yield better results than keeping his small crew alive. The crew members don’t have long, complicated names like Admiral Zaal Coris, Admiral Kwib Kwib, so they’re not going to help me in the future. Look for badges with it in holiday gift shops.

It was the right decision for me as a gamer, but the game doesn’t allow me to see if any of the crew members went on to be cured of their cancer. But what I really want is to get the most points and get that crazy big bastard gun in my next playthrough to unlock the special ending. Do you want to tackle these lofty questions regardless? Games should be fun, right?

The authors argue that it is the “fun” aspect of video games that makes them a more convenient medium for philosophy than books, and as the book states, “Philosophy has become so popular that it has become a compulsory subject in schools. “Very few governments take it seriously.'' Games may be the only place kids can learn about this topic. This is really depressing. And it’s almost certainly still true today. (This book was published in 2017).

Games are also great for philosophical discussions because you don’t have to worry about crazy theoretical situations. you play them. As you can see. You don’t have to argue with people by saying, “But I can’t do it.” actually “Go back in time and kill Hitler as a baby,” because that’s probably possible in the game. (Think Wolfenstein IV: Hitler Hospital.) Every time we turn on the console, we suspend our disbelief. Whether it’s a plumber growing by eating mushrooms or Arbroath winning the European Champions League on FM in 2024. In real life, I would never be in a situation where I would choose one life out of five (hopefully). Video games allow you to do that.

But as the player you cannot choose that – Ellie Must And just like saving the five red shirts in Mass Effect 3, it wasn’t a perfect solution after all. Other mishaps followed, and the sequel ended up dealing with them. It would be interesting if Naughty Dog made a version where Ellie died. A sequel to a game from another world!

I want those choices, but otherwise, when I’m forced to make choices in a game, I don’t want to use them as philosophical thought experiments or exciting ways to test morality. I don’t think so. I choose the one that earns me the most points. I grew up playing arcade games. There, the only measure of success was adding up the numbers. My children’s generation is different. They grew up playing the game.

NASA revives scientific endeavors in light of gyro challenge

Following the gyroscope issue, NASA successfully resumed scientific activities in hubble space telescopethe system works optimally.

NASA returned the agency’s Hubble Space Telescope to scientific operations on December 8th. The telescope temporarily suspended scientific observations on November 23 due to a problem with one of its gyros. The spacecraft is in good health and operating again using all three of her gyros.

NASA has decided to return the agency’s Hubble Space Telescope to science operations after a series of tests to determine the performance of the gyro that caused the spacecraft to suspend scientific operations.

After analyzing the data, the research team determined that scientific activities could resume under the control of the three gyros. Based on the performance observed during testing, the team decided to operate the gyro in a higher precision mode during scientific observations. Hubble’s instruments and the observatory itself remain stable and healthy.

Hubble’s two primary cameras, Wide Field Camera 3 and Advanced Survey Camera, resumed scientific observations on December 8th. The team plans to restore operation of the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrometer later this month.
