Gamers as Hackers: Discovering the Next Generation of Tech Talent in Unexpected Places | Bridging Fun and Purpose

For numerous young individuals in schools and universities, a solid understanding of digital skills is essential for future learning and employment prospects. Nonetheless, teachers face a considerable challenge in ensuring these skills are utilized effectively.

As reported by The Hacking Games, an organization focused on helping youth with hacking skills secure jobs in the cybersecurity sector, criminal groups are increasingly targeting talented teenagers within popular online gaming spaces.

This is a route that educators hope to steer their students away from, which is why Co-op, a sponsor of the Co-op Academies Trust, has collaborated with The Hacking Games. The Co-op Academies Trust serves over 20,000 students across 38 primary, secondary, and special needs schools, as well as one college in Northern England. The partnership aims to direct students with coding skills toward careers in ‘ethical hacking.’

Joe Sykes, Careers Director at the Co-op Academies Trust, comments: “In recent years, there has been a growing interest among students in technology, particularly gaming, and they are investigating how this passion might lead to future careers.

“Through our engagement with The Hacking Games, we discovered the transferable skills that exist between gaming and ethical hacking, particularly within cybersecurity. Our students found this link to be both exciting and motivating.”

“Students will find it engaging to learn about the transferable skills between gaming and ethical hacking in the technology sector, especially in cybersecurity.”

Adam Woodley, Head of Curriculum at Connell Cope College, agrees, noting that many young individuals view careers in the digital sector as a “very popular option.”

“Students have acquired highly sought-after skills through hobbies such as gaming, and they naturally desire to apply these skills in exciting career paths,” he states.

“Thus, it is crucial that they have the chance to explore the stimulating realm of ethical hacking and cybersecurity and utilize those skills to benefit society.”

Rob Elsey, Chief Digital Information Officer at Co-op, concurs. “There are numerous unfilled positions in cybersecurity,” he points out. “The more we can transform the bright, skilled young individuals we have in the UK into defenders instead of attackers, and educate them about the available opportunities, the better. This will help us confront ongoing threats as a nation.”

Driving apprenticeships and internships

Fergus Hay, co-founder of The Hacking Games, emphasizes, “It takes a community to motivate, appreciate, and empower this generation to choose the right path.” The Hacking Games’ framework assesses young people’s digital aptitudes and skills against specific criteria to identify suitable careers for them in the tech industry.

The Hacking Games is actively working on creating formal pathways (apprenticeships and internships) to digital jobs within the government or private sectors in the future. Many experts believe this route is also accessible for neurodiverse youth. However, for both neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals, gaming serves as a common training ground for hacking, remarks John Madelin, a cybersecurity veteran and Chief Product Officer at The Hacking Games.

“Many hackers I’ve encountered are gamers,” he states, adding that most young gamers do not harbor criminal intentions, “but the distinction is significant.” For many young gamers, hacking revolves around discovering new and hidden aspects of gameplay, while for some, it involves creating and selling cheat codes to other players.

These advanced technological skills are precisely what criminal organizations seek to exploit, particularly among students less focused on academic achievement. However, Madeline asserts she can guide young hackers toward more positive paths. “It’s essential to continuously challenge and engage them,” he states. “Instead of allowing them to remain inactive, we should utilize their talents.”

The Co-op Academies Trust has already identified careers in the digital sector as crucial components of its post-primary career program. Mr. Sykes believes it is vital for all children to discern their strengths as early as possible. “Our duty as educators is to optimize outcomes in these areas.

“Individuals with strong digital skills often possess a natural inclination to think logically and solve problems creatively,” she adds.

“Blessed with a talent for technology and gaming.”

The collaboration between Co-op and The Hacking Games comes after Co-op became the target of a cyberattack earlier this year. Focused on creating social value, Co-op (an organization owned by its members rather than shareholders) sought to address the underlying causes of hacking.

“We recognize that children possess talents in technology and gaming, and that these skills can lead to hacking,” Sykes states. “Initiatives like this allow us to discuss the ramifications and legalities surrounding hacking and help students recognize the opportunities these skills can present through their ethical application.”

Potential roles in cybersecurity for major firms and organizations may involve identifying weaknesses that malicious hackers could exploit. There are also opportunities within government departments working against hacking attempts directed at critical national infrastructure.

This is one of the primary reasons The Hacking Games recently launched its HAPTAI platform. The platform aids in developing hacking aptitude profiles for young individuals by analyzing their performances in popular games and matching them with corresponding psychometric profiles. Subsequently, candidates are paired with roles and teams suited to their strengths.

Protection today, career path tomorrow

“Children can be particularly susceptible to online dangers, thus we ensure they are educated about these risks, including the legal boundaries surrounding online safety and hacking,” Sykes explains. “I believe all schools need to stay updated with current issues. This presents a real opportunity for professionals to enhance their understanding of the risks and communicate them effectively to parents.”

In the future, she envisions a national computer science curriculum that incorporates lessons on ethical hacking and PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic), helping all students recognize the potential harm at all levels of the economy.

Until that vision is realized, the partnership between Co-op and The Hacking Games will persist. The Co-op Academy Walkden will be piloted in the upcoming months to raise awareness of the issue and identify talented young individuals who can contribute to the solution before scaling it into a nationwide program.

“There are vast career opportunities in the digital arena,” states Sykes. “This ultimately aids students in understanding all the positive pathways available to them and how they can significantly contribute to creating a safer world.”

What Enhancements Are Coming in the Next Generation of mRNA Vaccines?

Virus-like vaccines typically trigger strong immune reactions; however, mRNA versions are significantly quicker and less expensive to manufacture. We now benefit from mRNA vaccines that encode for virus-like nanoparticles instead of individual proteins, as is the case with current COVID-19 mRNA vaccines.

Grace Hendricks and her team at the University of Washington in Seattle have demonstrated that an mRNA version of a coronavirus nanoparticle vaccine provokes immune responses in mice that are up to 28 times stronger than those elicited by standard mRNA vaccines.

According to Hendricks, some mild but unpleasant side effects of mRNA vaccines result from the body’s immediate response to the injected mRNA and the lipid particles encapsulating it. A more potent vaccine could enable lower dosages. “This means we can maintain the essential immune response while reducing the dose, thus minimizing side effects,” she explains.

The first vaccine was comprised of a weakened “live” virus and is highly effective, yet poses risks for individuals with compromised immune systems. This was followed by inactivated vaccines containing “dead” viruses, which are safer but challenging to produce.

The advancement continued with protein subunit vaccines that generally include only the exterior proteins of the virus. These are even safer than inactivated vaccines, but airborne proteins often fail to induce robust immune responses.

As a solution, vaccine developers began embedding viral proteins into tiny spheres to create spiky structures resembling viruses to the immune system, yet as safe as protein subunit vaccines. This is achieved by modifying existing proteins to self-assemble into small spheres with protruding viral proteins known as vaccine nanoparticles.

During the pandemic, Hendricks’s colleagues worked on a COVID-19 nanoparticle vaccine called Skycovion. Although it received approval in South Korea in 2022, mRNA vaccines had already made significant advances by that time, leading to limited use of Skycovion.

mRNA vaccines are significantly faster and more straightforward to produce than protein-based vaccines, as they provide a recipe for protein assembly, while the challenging task of protein synthesis is executed by the body’s cells. The viral proteins coded by these first-generation mRNA vaccines eventually protrude from the cell surface, inducing a more effective immune response compared to free-floating proteins but still falling short of the efficacy seen with nanoparticle vaccines.

Currently, Hendricks and her colleagues have merged the advantages of both methods by developing a vaccine that consists of mRNA encoding Skycovion. After the vaccine proteins are produced within cells, they organize into nanoparticles that have shown efficacy in mouse studies.

“This was merely a proof of concept for this gene transfer,” Hendricks stated. She and her team are already advancing what they term mRNA-launched nanoparticle vaccines targeting influenza, Epstein-Barr virus (which can lead to cancer), and various other viruses.

“I am excited about the potential of mRNA-launched protein nanoparticle vaccines.” said William Sheeff from The Scripps Research Institute in California, who is working on an HIV vaccine. “My colleagues and I have published impressive immunogenicity results with two mRNA-launched nanoparticles in clinical trials and several similar particles in mouse models. This new research enhances the existing body of work.” Despite this promising trajectory, the United States has announced significant cuts to funding for the development of mRNA vaccines.

Microwave Tea? The Shift Among Generation Z from Kettles to Quick Brews

Outer appearance: It’s gradually becoming less common.

I’m not sure where this is going. Get with the times. Young people in the UK seem to have moved away from using kettles for tea.

Are they boiling water in a pot? Not ideal.

You can’t mean… I don’t want to say this, but they might be using a microwave now.

Can you hear that? King Arthur is weeping. Or perhaps they have a point. Maybe they are tired of brewing tea with disposable appliances clogged with old lime scale.

But it’s a tradition! That’s irrelevant. A survey of over 2,000 UK energy bill payers conducted by Uswitch revealed that 58% of individuals under 30 use microwaves for their tea. One in six admits to doing this daily.

Why’s that? Is it quicker? Not really. Boiling water for a mug takes 48 seconds in a kettle and almost 3 minutes in a microwave.

So, is the drink quality any better? No, it’s not. Dr. Tim Bond from the Tea Advisory Panel states that microwaves heat water unevenly, causing inconsistent tea extraction and a stewed flavor.

Why use the microwave then? There are two main reasons. Some students are forced to use microwaves due to university restrictions on kettles.

What’s the other reason? American influence.

What do you mean? Americans typically don’t use electric kettles, making them more likely to microwave water. Those influenced by American culture may start seeing this as the norm.

Oh. First, they picked Trump, and now this? It’s alright. This means owning an electric kettle has become a badge of defiance. The UK may have its flaws, but at least we know how to properly boil water.

Indeed! Our national chant is, “Tea before the milk!” Speaking of which…

What now? Years ago, scientists from the University of Leeds found that adding milk before the tea can actually enhance the taste.

This feels like a betrayal of all I hold dear. Don’t worry, it’s understandable; your struggle to change a light bulb and your discontent with their political system are perhaps more concerning.

All this makes microwave tea seem trivial. Absolutely.

Say: “I’ll brew a kettle…”

Don’t say: “… Sell it on eBay. Who drinks a refreshing cup of microwave tea?”

Generation Alpha’s Secret Language Hides Online Bullying from Detection

The terminology of Generation Alpha is evolving faster than educators, parents, and AI can keep up with.

Manisha Meta, a 14-year-old student from Warren E Hyde Middle School in Cupertino, California, alongside Fausto Giunchiglia from the University of Trent in Italy, examined 100 expressions popular among Generation Alpha, those born from 2010 to 2025, sourced from gaming, social media, and video platforms.

The researchers then asked 24 classmates of Mehta, aged between 11 and 14, to evaluate these phrases along with contextual screenshots. The volunteers assessed their understanding of the phrases, the contexts in which they were used, and if they carried potential safety risks or harmful interpretations. They also consulted their parents, professional moderators, and four AI models (GPT-4, Claude, Gemini, and Llama 3) for the same analysis.

“I’ve always been intrigued by Generation Alpha’s language because it’s so distinctive; relevance shifts rapidly, and trends become outdated just as quickly,” says Mehta.

Among the Alpha generation volunteers, 98% grasped the basic meaning of a given phrase, 96% understood the context of its use, and 92% recognized instances of harmful intent. In contrast, the AI model could identify harmful usage only around 40% of the time, with Claude stumbling from 32.5% to 42.3%. Parents and moderators also fell short, detecting harmful usages in just one-third of instances.

“We expected a broader comprehension than we observed,” Mehta reflects. “Much of the feedback from my parents was speculative.”

Common phrases from Generation Alpha often have double meanings based on context. For instance, “Let’s Cook His” can signify genuine praise in gaming but may also mockingly refer to someone rambling incoherently. “Kys,” once short for “know yourself,” has now been repurposed to mean “kill yourself.” Another phrase that could hide malicious intent is, “Is it acoustic?”

“Generation Alpha is exceedingly vulnerable online,” says Meta. “As AI increasingly dominates content moderation, understanding the language used by LLMs is crucial.”

“It’s evident that LLMs are transforming the landscape,” asserts Giunchiglia. “This presents fundamental questions that need addressing.”

The results were published this week at the Computing Machinery Conference Association on Equity, Accountability and Transparency in Athens, Greece.

“Empirical evidence from this research highlights significant shortcomings in content moderation systems, especially concerning the analysis and protection of young individuals,” notes Michael Veal from University College London. “Companies and regulators must heed this and adapt as regulations evolve in jurisdictions where platform laws are designed to safeguard the youth.”

Is the Nintendo Switch the Best Console of Its Generation, or Just the One That Resonates Most with Me?

this gaming console lifespan has greatly expanded since my childhood. In the 1990s, new technology became outdated in just a matter of years. Almost immediately, fresh and enticing devices began appearing, sparking fierce competition to stay ahead. The Game Boy and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive debuted in 1989, soon followed by the Game Gear in 1990 and the Super NES in 1991.

Now, we’re looking at a ten-year span. The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch in just a few weeks. This comes over eight years after I first unboxed the original Switch and was amazed by its instant switch to portable mode. Game consoles often seem to mark different milestones in my life: the Nintendo 64 defined my childhood, the PlayStation 2 was central to my teenage years, and the Xbox 360 accompanied me during my early career, coinciding with my first experience covering a console launch as a young journalist. The Nintendo Switch arrived shortly after the birth of my first child.

Reflecting on my time with the Switch, I recall moments in *Breath of the Wild* when I would grab some gaming time while my baby napped beside me. On our inaugural family holiday, we played a quirky match of *Splatoon* on the balcony of a French villa. And as I strolled around the house with my second baby in a sling, I tried to negotiate the care of my virtual animals while he fought off sleep (he never did). When they’re old enough, my kids will get to share the first games I played on the Switch with me. We recently enjoyed *Pokemon Sword and Shield* together, and I’ve revisited *Princess Speech Showtime* with just minimal help from my little one.

Over these past eight years, my living room TV has become a stage for characters like Bluey and Moana, and recently (God help me) Alvin and the Chipmunks. The Switch offered me a time capsule, letting me escape into gaming even amidst the chaos. Eight years is a long time, enough for life to shift dramatically. I’ve experienced loss, relocation, and new friendships. Additionally, we all navigated a pandemic, with *Animal Crossing: New Horizons* emerging as the defining game of that period. The Switch isn’t just a console; it’s a cherished retreat.

Since 2017, my life has changed, as I assume yours has too. The console feels like a companion, especially portable devices like the Switch and Game Boy. My children are older now, enjoying the same Switch games that once captured their younger selves’ imaginations. The Switch 2 seems poised to herald a new stage in our gaming journey.

Recently, I gathered all my Switch consoles, games, controllers, and accessories, from family favorites to my partner’s special Zelda Edition. This console serves as our family gaming hub, complete with spare Joy-Cons for those spontaneous gaming sessions. It’s not quite time for it to join the forgotten consoles under my bed. I’m ready for the Switch 2, but I’m not in a rush to retire my family console just yet. I genuinely don’t want to. The Switch remains my favorite console to date—not just for its legendary games likely to be remembered for two more decades, but also for its unprecedented hybrid design that transformed my gaming habits and created a special place in my heart.

As this era comes to a close, I feel a pinch of nostalgia. Soon, the conversation will revolve around new consoles, questions of sales, their value, and top strategies in Mario Kart, as fans compare them to their groundbreaking predecessor. For the moment, I’m not fixated on what the Nintendo Switch signifies for the industry; rather, I’m pondering its personal significance for me.

Indeed, aside from perhaps a few iterations, Nintendo typically opts for distinct names for each console, like the Game Boy, NES, and Super NES, Wii and Wii U, as well as the current Switch and upcoming Switch 2. It’s the first time they’ve embraced numbers, likely due to the poor reception of the Wii U. However, it also indicates the evolving and cautious nature of the gaming industry as we approach 2025—or it might reflect Nintendo President Furukawa’s background in finance.

Science reveals that this generation is the most sensitive.

When it comes to sensitivity, the question of which generation is the most sensitive depends on who you ask. American Psychologist Dr. Jean Twenghe has conducted research comparing different cohorts and suggested that “millennials” (those born between 1981 and 1996) exhibit traits such as neurotic narcissism and anxiety more than previous generations. They tend to have unrealistically high expectations and struggle with criticism.

However, other studies have not always supported these findings. Research on nearly 500,000 American high school students between 1976 and 2006 found minimal differences in psychological characteristics across generations, including egoism and sensitivity to social status, which may indicate hypersensitivity.

Contrarily, some studies suggest that older generations may actually be more sensitive. A study from 2019 that analyzed hundreds of people born between 1923 and 1969 showed that those born earlier in the century exhibited greater signs of hypersensitivity.

Another study from 2024 focused on changes in narcissistic traits, including hypersensitivity, over the lifespan and across generations. It revealed that narcissism tends to decrease with age consistently across generations.

Overall, these studies suggest that hypersensitivity tends to decrease with age, with age being a more significant factor than the generation one belongs to. Some experts, like psychologist Professor Cote Rudolph, argue that the concept of individual generations like “Boomers” and “Gen X-ers” is arbitrary, and age and life experiences have a more significant impact.

OpenAI introduces SORA video generation tool in UK amidst copyright dispute | Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Openai, the artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, has introduced video generation tools in the UK, highlighting the growing connection between the tech sector and the creative industry in relation to copyright.

Film director Beevan Kidron spoke out about the release of Sora in the UK, noting its impact on the ongoing copyright debate.

Openai, based in San Francisco, has made SORA accessible to UK users who are subscribed to ChatGPT. The tool surprised filmmakers upon its release last year. A halt in studio expansion was triggered by concerns from TV mogul Tyler Perry, who believed the tool could replace physical sets or locations. It was initially launched in the US in December.

Users can utilize SORA to generate videos by inputting simple prompts like requesting scenes of people walking through “beautiful snowy Tokyo City.”

Openai has now introduced SORA in the UK, with reported cases of artists using the tool in the UK and mainland Europe, where it was also released on Friday. One user, Josephine Miller, a 25-year-old British digital artist, created a video using SORA featuring a model adorned in bioluminescent fauna, praising the tool for opening up opportunities for young creatives.

Despite the launch of SORA, Kidron emphasized the significance of the ongoing UK copyright and AI discussions, particularly in light of government proposals permitting AI companies to train their models using copyrighted content.

Kidron raised concerns about the ethical use of copyrighted material to train SORA, pointing out potential violations of terms and conditions if unauthorized content is used. She stressed the importance of upholding copyright laws in the development of AI technologies.

Recent statements from YouTube indicated that using copyrighted material without proper licensing for training AI models like SORA could lead to legal repercussions. The concern remains about the origin and legality of the datasets used to train these AI tools.

The Guardian reported that policymakers are exploring options for offering copyright concessions to certain creative sectors, further highlighting the complex interplay between AI, technology, and copyright laws.
