On a fateful Sunday shift, I felt an unsettling dread arise when breaking news emerged about a biological control virus aimed at Australia’s massive rabbit population escaping quarantine. This incident occurred near Yunta, a tiny speck on the South Australian map, roughly 250 km off the coast. Surprisingly, authorities identified only two individuals who had traveled to both Point Pearce and the new quarantine zone—myself included.

This unsettling event took place in October 1995, while I was a junior environmental reporter for one of Australia’s major newspapers in Sydney. Amid a whirlwind of topics, one article caught my attention: the ambitious endeavor to eradicate Australia’s invasive feral rabbit population was faltering.

The project, spearheaded by CSIRO, Australia’s foremost federal science agency, involved testing the lethal rabbit calicivirus at a quarantine facility on Wardung Island, situated a few kilometers off South Australia’s coast. Significant work remained before the virus was deemed fit for release; scientists were determined to ensure it posed no risk to native wildlife or the ecosystem.

However, on October 10, CSIRO announced that the virus had spread beyond its quarantine confines, reaching two additional locations, while oddly asserting that it had not escaped the island. Just a week later, I arrived at my desk to learn that the virus had somehow crossed from Wardung Island to Point Pearce on the mainland. I promptly urged my editor to let me and the photographer fly to Adelaide and head straight to Point Pearce.

By early afternoon, photographer Peter Ray and I traversed the arid landscape of Point Pearce for a meeting with government scientists managing the quarantine response.

Upon our arrival, local Aboriginal community members escorted us the final few kilometers to meet the quarantine team. Despite being the sole reporters present, the evidence of the impending rabbit crisis was unmistakable—dead rabbits littered the paddock. We documented interviews with researchers and accompanied them to the cabin where autopsies were taking place.

As the gravity of what we witnessed became apparent to our editors back in Sydney, I was tasked with exploring the potential implications if the virus continued to breach quarantine controls. I reached out to a rabbit meat wholesaler who connected me to an archer supplying rabbit fur for Australia’s renowned Akubra hats.

The next morning, we traveled to Yunta, over 300 km north of Adelaide, to meet rabbit shooter Clinton Degenhardt, who sat in his car with a rifle beside him. He and others in the rabbit meat and fur industry were deeply concerned about their livelihoods.

The following day, our front-page story was published, and as the week progressed, nothing more transpired until that Sunday, when the devastating news broke that the virus had reached Yunta.

South Australia’s chief veterinarian suggested that Peter and I might have inadvertently spread the virus, prompting a press release to that effect. My tranquil Sunday was suddenly transformed into a chaotic meeting as our editor tried to ascertain how we were tied to this incident.

The next day, Tim Fisher, the then-leader of the Australian National Party, raised the issue in Parliament, proposing that if our involvement was confirmed, we should take up jobs on the Dog Control Fence—a lush 5,600 km long pest control barrier separating southeastern Australia from the rest of the country.

Fortunately, scientists soon suggested that blowflies might have transmitted the virus instead of us, allowing the story to evolve. Nonetheless, it perplexed me that the virus first surfaced in Yunta, the area where I’d interviewed the rabbit shooter. Was this mere coincidence, a conspiracy, or a hoax? I may never know.

Competing news outlets thrived on the irony of our major scoop morphing into a public relations nightmare, and my friends and colleagues found endless amusement in teasing me. During those initial tumultuous weeks, I received a copy of the book Watership Down, and many dubbed me the “Bunny Killer.”

Interestingly, while many harbored animosity towards rabbits, there was also excitement at the prospect of liberating the land from these invasive hares. Farmers, conservationists, and endangered species researchers rejoiced at the likelihood of eradicating one of Australia’s most notorious pests, albeit temporarily until resistance would develop. In those initial two months following October, at least 10 million rabbits perished, and ultimately, hundreds of millions more would follow.

Nearly four years later, I found myself at Herdanda Station, a sprawling 3,000 square kilometer ranch near Alice Springs. Before the calicivirus outbreak, the property was home to 20,000 rabbit warrens. When I visited, the rabbit population had dwindled to nearly zero. When the owner, Bernie Kilgariff, discovered my identity as the reporter accused of spreading the virus, he insisted I sign the visitor’s list as a guest of honor rather than as a governor-general.

Discovering Diverse Marine Amphibian Communities: Early Triassic Fossils Uncovered in Australia

“The catastrophic end-Permian mass extinction and severe global warming gave rise to modern marine ecosystems at the dawn of the Mesozoic Era, around 252 million years ago,” stated Dr. Benjamin Kjaer from the Swedish Museum of Natural History and his colleagues.

“This significant evolutionary milestone marked the early emergence of sea-going tetrapods (limbed vertebrates), including amphibians and reptiles that quickly established themselves as dominant aquatic apex predators.”

“To date, the earliest sea monster fossils have primarily been documented in the Northern Hemisphere.”

“In contrast, the fossil record from the Southern Hemisphere remains geographically sparse and inadequately understood.”

Paleontologists recently analyzed marine amphibian fossils from the renowned Kimberley region of Western Australia’s far north.

“These fossils were uncovered during scientific expeditions in the early 1960s and 1970s,” the researchers noted.

“The specimens were subsequently distributed to various museum collections across Australia and the United States.”

“The results of this research were initially published in 1972, identifying a single species of marine amphibian, Erythrobatrachus nooncambahensis, named after skull fragments discovered at Noonkumba Farm, east of Derby in the Kimberley region.”

“Unfortunately, the original fossil of Erythrobatrachus has since been lost over the past 50 years.”

“This prompted a survey of international museum collections, leading to the rediscovery and reanalysis of these ancient marine amphibian remains in 2024.”

According to scientists, Erythrobatrachus is classified within the trematosaurid family of temnospondyls.

“Trematosaurids bore a superficial resemblance to crocodiles and were related to modern salamanders and frogs, reaching lengths of up to 2 meters (6.6 feet),” the researchers explained.

“These fossils hold significant importance as they were found in rocks deposited as coastal sediments less than a million years after the end-Permian mass extinction.”

“Thus, they represent the oldest currently recognized groups of Mesozoic marine tetrapods in geological terms.”

However, detailed investigations revealed that the skull fragments of Erythrobatrachus were not unified but belonged to at least two distinct types of trematosaurids: Erythrobatrachus and another species from the well-known genus Aphanelamma.

“Examination of Erythrobatrachus using advanced 3D imaging indicated the skull measured approximately 40 centimeters (16 inches) when intact, suggesting it was a robust, broad-headed apex predator,” the authors stated.

“Conversely, Aphanelamma were similar in size but featured elongated snouts adapted for catching smaller fish.”

“Both types of trematosaurids occupied the water column yet targeted different prey within the same habitat.”

“Furthermore, the fossils of Erythrobatrachus are uniquely found in Australia, while Aphanelamma has been discovered in similarly aged deposits across regions like the Scandinavian Arctic, Svalbard, the Far East, Pakistan, and Madagascar.”

“The Australian trematosaurid fossils provide evidence that these early Mesozoic marine tetrapods not only radiated swiftly into various ecological niches but also dispersed globally along the coastal margins of interconnected supercontinents during the initial two million years of the dinosaur epoch.”

The team’s study was recently published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

60,000 Years Ago: Ancient Humans Arrived in Australia via Two Distinct Routes

The timeline and means by which ancient humans made their way to what is now Australia and New Guinea have sparked much debate over the years. Recent genetic studies indicate this event likely occurred at least 60,000 years ago and involved two separate routes.

The regions of modern-day Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea were once part of Sahul, an ancient continent that emerged during the peak of the ice age when sea levels were significantly lower. Researchers have been keen to understand human migration into these regions as it necessitated navigating dangerous ocean stretches of over 100 kilometers, even during low sea levels.

There are two primary theories regarding the arrival of humans in Sahul: one suggests it took place at least 60,000 years ago, while the other posits a timeline of around 45,000 years ago.

Regarding the approach taken, scientists have put forth two main routes. The southern route is believed to have led to Australia by sea from present-day mainland Southeast Asia through the Sunda region that comprises Malaysia, Indonesia, and Timor. The northern route, however, has more compelling supporting evidence, indicating that humans migrated through the Philippines and Sulawesi to reach modern-day New Guinea, where ancient hominin stone tools dating back millions of years were recently found.

To unravel these migrations, Martin Richards and his colleagues from the University of Huddersfield in the UK examined approximately 2,500 genome sequences from Indigenous Australians, Papua New Guineans, and various populations across the Western Pacific and Southeast Asia.

By analyzing DNA mutation rates and the genetic ties between these populations, the researchers determined that the initial human settlement of Sahul occurred via both routes, but predominantly through the northern pathway.

The question of timing has also been addressed by the researchers. “We traced both dispersals to around the same period, approximately 60,000 years ago,” Richards noted. “This lends support to the ‘long chronology’ of settlement as opposed to the ‘short chronology’ suggesting arrival around 45,000 to 50,000 years ago.”

The findings further illustrate that migration wasn’t a straightforward process, partially based on the discovery of ancient genetic lineages in a 1,700-year-old burial site in Sulawesi. The team also detected evidence indicating that shortly after their arrival on Sahul, coastal and marine communities began migrating towards what we now refer to as the Solomon Islands.

Adam Blum, a professor at Griffith University in Brisbane, asserted that the field of paleogenetics, which investigates history through preserved genetic materials, “seems to adjust the narrative with each new study.”

“We believe this research bolsters the idea that the northern route played a crucial role in the early populating of Australia,” Blum remarked. “Considering the ancient cave art found on Sulawesi, the possibility is rapidly becoming more plausible.”

This remarkable rock artwork has been dated to at least 51,200 years ago, Blum explained. “I have a strong suspicion that individuals were crafting art in Sulawesi’s caves and shelters over 65,000 years ago.”

Peter Veth and his team at the University of Western Australia in Perth assert that even the most conservative estimates from the Majedbebe site in Australia’s Northern Territory suggest human activity traces exceeding 60,000 years. New research further underscores the significance of early human arrival in Sahul.

Roblox Launches Age Verification Feature in Australia, Advocating Against Child Social Media Ban

Roblox maintains that Australia’s forthcoming social media restrictions for users under 16 should not extend to its platform, as it rolls out a new age verification feature designed to block minors from communicating with unknown adults.

The feature, which is being launched first in Australia, allows users to self-estimate their age using Persona age estimation technology built into the Roblox app. This utilizes the device’s camera to analyze facial features and provide a live age assessment.


This feature will become compulsory in Australia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand starting the first week of December, with plans to expand to other markets in early January.

After completing the age verification, users will be categorized into one of six age groups: under 9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, or 21 and older.

Roblox has stated that users within each age category will only be able to communicate with peers in their respective groups or similarly aged groups.

These changes were initially proposed in September and received positive feedback from Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, who has been in discussions with Roblox for several months regarding safety concerns on the platform, labeling this as a step forward in enhancing safety measures.

A recent Guardian Australia investigation revealed a week’s worth of virtual harassment and violence experienced by users who had set their profiles as eight years old while on Roblox.

Regulatory pressure is mounting for Roblox to be included in Australia’s under-16 social media ban, set to be implemented on December 10. Although there are exceptions for gaming platforms, Julie Inman-Grant stated earlier this month that eSafety agencies are reviewing chat functions and messaging in games.

“If online gameplay is the primary or sole purpose, would kids still utilize the messaging feature for communication if it were removed? Probably not,” she asserted.

During a discussion with Australian reporters regarding these impending changes, Roblox’s chief safety officer, Matt Kaufman, characterized Roblox as an “immersive gaming platform.” He explained, “I view games as a framework for social interaction. The essence lies in bringing people together and spending time with one another.”

When asked if this suggests Roblox should be classified as a social media platform subject to the ban, Kaufman responded that Roblox considers social media as a space where individuals post content to a feed for others to view.

“People return to look at the feed, which fosters a fear of missing out,” he elaborated. “It feels like a popularity contest that encapsulates social media. In contrast, Roblox is akin to two friends playing a game after school together. That’s not social media.”

“Therefore, we don’t believe that Australia’s domestic social media regulations apply to Roblox.”


When questioned if the new features were introduced to avoid being encompassed in the ban, Kaufman stated that the company is engaged in “constructive dialogue” with regulators and that these updates showcase the largest instance of a platform utilizing age verification across its entire user base.

He assured that there are “strict requirements” for data deletion after age verification. Roblox states that ID images will be retained for 30 days for purposes such as fraud detection and then erased.

Users who opt not to participate in the age verification will still have access to Roblox, but they will be unable to use features like chat.

More than 150 million people globally engage with Roblox every day across 180 countries, including Australia. According to Kaufman, two-thirds of users are aged 13 and above.

Ancient 55-Million-Year-Old Crocodile Eggshell Found in Australia

Known as Wakaorisus Godterupi, this eggshell type belongs to the mecostine crocodile, which represents the oldest crocodile eggshell ever discovered in Australia.

The now-extinct Mecostinae (Mecostinae) represented a distinctive local branch of Australia’s crocodilian family.

These creatures dominated the continent’s inland waters approximately 55 million years ago during the early Eocene epoch.

They were part of a broader group that included true crocodiles, gharials, and caimans.

However, mecostins represent an older lineage than the saltwater and freshwater crocodiles currently found in Australia.

Modern species arrived much later, migrating to the continent from Southeast Asia about 5 million years ago.

Unlike contemporary crocodiles, mecostins occupied a rather unusual ecological niche.

“It’s a peculiar notion, but evidence suggests that some of them were terrestrial hunters in forested areas,” remarked Professor Michael Archer from the University of New South Wales.

“This is indicated by a wide range of juvenile mecostin fossils previously found in 25-million-year-old deposits in the Riverslea World Heritage Area, Boojamulla National Park, Wahnee Country, in north-west Queensland.”

“Some species living in those rivers reached lengths of over five meters, including ‘drop crocodiles’ that were likely partially arboreal.”

“They might have hunted similarly to leopards, dropping unsuspecting prey from trees.”

The eggshells of Wakaorisus Godterupi are among the oldest known members of the Mecostinidae clade.

“These eggshells offer a glimpse into the life history of Mecostine,” said paleontologist Dr. Panades y Blas.

“We can now explore not only the unique anatomy of these crocodiles but also their reproductive behaviors and adaptations to environmental changes.”

The researchers examined Wakaorisus Godterupi shell fragments using both optical and electron microscopes.

The microstructure indicates that these crocodiles laid eggs at the water’s edge, employing a reproductive strategy suited to variable conditions.

“The Mecostine crocodile may have lost extensive inland territory to dryland encroachments, ultimately competing with new arrivals in Australia, dwindling megafauna-sized prey, and diminishing waterways,” noted University of New South Wales palaeontologist Dr. Michael Stein.

“Lake Murgon was surrounded by lush forests. I was at home too where fossils of the world’s oldest songbird, Australia’s oldest frog and snake, various small mammals connected to South America, and even one of the oldest bats have been found.”

The researchers assert that fossil eggshells are an underutilized asset in vertebrate paleontology.

“They retain microstructural and geochemical evidence that reveals not only the type of animal that laid them but also where they nested and how they bred,” said Dr. Panades y Blas.

“Our research demonstrates the significance of these fragments.”

“Eggshells should be a standard element of paleontological investigations, collected, categorized, and analyzed alongside bones and teeth.”

These findings are published this week in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

Meta Faces Potential Multi-Million Dollar Fine for Ignoring Content Agreement in Australia

Meta and various tech firms that decline to enter into content agreements with Australian news organizations could face hefty multimillion-dollar penalties, as Labor’s proposed media bargaining initiative aims to link fines to the local revenues of major platforms.

New regulations will apply to large social media and search platforms generating at least $250 million in Australian revenue, regardless of whether they distribute news content, as per recent disclosures from Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino.

Labor has shown a slow response in formulating a news bargaining incentive plan due to apprehensions about potential backlash from US President Donald Trump regarding his approach to US-based platforms.


Initially announced in December 2024, the implementation date remains uncertain, pending a month-long public consultation by the government.

These new regulations are intended to compel payments from platforms which have chosen to withdraw from the news media bargaining framework established during Prime Minister Morrison’s administration, a structure that has enabled publishers like Guardian Australia to secure around 30 agreements valued at an estimated $200 million to $250 million annually.

The decline in advertising revenue has significantly affected major media operators like News Corp and Nine and Seven West Media, leading to layoffs and cost reductions, while digital giants such as Google and Facebook’s parent companies continue to enjoy substantial profits.

Meta, which owns platforms like Facebook and Instagram, has declined to enter into new contracts under the existing terms, whereas Google has willingly renewed some contracts with publishers, albeit at lower payment rates.

Tech firms can bypass existing arrangements by entirely removing news content from their platforms, a move made by Meta in Canada in 2023.

Labor’s new incentive initiative aims to assist news publishers in obtaining funding even from platforms that have opted out of the news bargaining system and to support smaller publishers that depend heavily on digital platforms for content distribution.

A new discussion paper outlines that if a tech platform refuses to engage in a content agreement, it will be required to pay either a portion of the gross revenue produced in Australia or just the revenue stemming from digital advertising. This penalty would be enforced at the group level and would not extend to smaller subsidiary brands owned by larger corporations.

The Treasury has indicated support for a $250 million annual income threshold for this new framework and suggested that the government use the total group income generated in Australia as the primary benchmark for payments.

Preliminary analyses estimate the worth of existing agreements with publishers is approximately equivalent to 1.5% of the revenue generated by relevant platforms in Australia. The new fines could reach 2.25% of revenue to facilitate trading under existing laws. According to the proposed structure of the new incentives, a portion of eligible expenses might be utilized to decrease penalty amounts.

Companies will need to self-evaluate their liabilities under these regulations, but the legislation will depend on a broad definition of social media and search.

Despite not having a registered business account in Australia, Facebook’s Australian subsidiary announced in April that it generated $1.46 billion in revenue for the year ending December 31, an increase from $1.34 billion the previous year, despite declining advertising markets.

President Trump has previously threatened to impose significant trade tariffs on countries perceived to treat American firms unfairly. His former confidant and billionaire advisor, Elon Musk, is the owner of Platform X.

Nonetheless, Labor is proceeding with the introduction of new penalties following Anthony Albanese’s productive meeting at the White House last month.

Former chairman of the competition watchdog, Rod Sims, has expressed support for Labor’s proposed penalty system, stating that Google and Facebook are profiting from content created by Australian news organizations and that failing to bolster journalism would enable lower-quality sources to flourish.

Sims had previously estimated that commercial contracts established under these terms amounted to $1 billion over a four-year period.

The government will continue consultations regarding the incentive plan until December 19, after which it will finalize its strategy in 2026.

Newly Discovered ‘Lucifer’ Bee Species with Horns Found in Australia

Scientists in Australia have discovered a new species of native bee featuring tiny, devilish horns, leading to its whimsically infernal name, Lucifer.

The species is called megachile lucifer. It was identified in 2019 during research on endangered wildflowers in Western Australia’s Goldfields, as reported in a recent study published Monday in the Journal of Hymenoptera Research.

The lead author of the study, Kit Prendergast, who is also a part-time researcher at Curtin University, explained that the female bee earned its name due to its uniquely upturned horns.

“While crafting a description for the new species, I was watching the Netflix series lucifer,” Prendergast mentioned in a statement on Tuesday. “The name felt just right.”

Following DNA analysis revealed that this species does not correspond with any known bees in current databases, marking it as the first new member of its group to be described in over two decades, according to researchers.

Researchers hypothesize that the approximately 0.9-millimeter-long horns could be used for accessing flowers, competing for resources, or protecting nests, although their precise function remains uncertain. Male bees of this species lack horns.

Prendergast emphasized the significance of studying native bee species, noting that new species may be endangered due to threats such as habitat disruption and climate change.

“If we are unaware of which native bees exist and the plants they rely on, we risk losing both before realizing their importance,” she stated.

Reports indicate that Australia is home to around 2,000 native bee species, with over 300 yet to be scientifically named and described, according to CSIRO, Australia’s National Science Agency.

Tobias Smith, a honey bee researcher from the University of Queensland, mentioned in an email to NBC News on Tuesday that Australia’s native honey bees are “understudied and data-scarce,” resulting in insufficient knowledge about the conservation status of “nearly every species.”

Smith, who did not participate in the study, noted that Australian authorities need “stronger policies” to safeguard native bees from habitat loss, inadequate fire protection, and the heightened threat of large-scale fires.

Smith encouraged Australians to “venture out and seek out our native bees and appreciate their presence.”

A vast and lethal algal bloom has wreaked havoc in South Australia over the past eight months, impacting over 20,000 square kilometers of marine habitat. An estimated 1 million animals from more than 550 species have perished, significantly affecting human health as well.

Researchers have recently pinpointed the species responsible for this ecological calamity, cautioning that it represents a “new international threat with unpredictable outcomes.”

The alarming agent is a type of algae known as Karenia cristata. Previously, it was documented only in two locales near South Africa, where it resulted in fish die-offs in 1989 and the mid-1990s, as well as off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

The research team has also identified a novel toxin released by K. cristata, which belongs to a group of compounds called brevetoxins. These toxins can inflict neurological harm on marine creatures, damage fish gills, and lead to fatalities in various species, including sea dragons, great white sharks, and dolphins. Brevetoxins pose a risk to humans via inhalation or ingestion.

Team member Shona Murray, a professor at the University of Technology Sydney, expressed concern among international colleagues regarding the implications of a new toxin-producing species potentially appearing in their waters.

“We are aware that this algal bloom has the capacity to proliferate in other parts of the world,” she cautions. “Previously, we underestimated its ability to create extensive and destructive blooms that could persist for eight months.

“Now we have confirmation, and it’s evident that it’s already occurring in other global regions; thus, I consider it an international threat.”

Murray and her research team noted that nearly 850 instances of harmful marine algal blooms have been documented worldwide from 1985 to 2025, with the recent South Australian event considered “one of the most severe and widespread” ever recorded globally.

The researchers have yet to determine the reason for such a vast and lethal bloom. Nevertheless, the unexpected expansion of the blooms occurred after May 2025 when ocean temperatures began to decline.

K. cristata researchers emphasize the urgent need to comprehend the triggers for the bloom, noting that, given the right circumstances, it could impact numerous countries.

Christopher Keneally from the University of Adelaide points out that the dominant Karenia species previously identified, Karenia mikimotoi, is not known for producing brevetoxins. “There are numerous uncertainties regarding how the specific toxins produced by this species influence humans,” he states.

He concurs that the discovery raises concerns about potential new threats arising beyond Australia. “Given this species’ wide global distribution, it’s likely already present in small quantities in various coastal areas worldwide,” he adds. “As nutrient levels rise in many urbanized coastal regions and sea surface temperatures escalate, we can rightly predict that a variety of bloom-forming organisms will become increasingly prevalent.”

OpenAI Diverges from Technology Council of Australia Amidst Controversial Copyright Debate

Open AI has severed its relationship with the Technology Council of Australia due to copyright limitations, asserting that its AI models “will be utilized in Australia regardless.”

Chris Lehane, the chief international affairs officer of the company behind ChatGPT, delivered a keynote address at SXSW Sydney on Friday. He discussed the geopolitics surrounding AI, the technological future in Australia, and the ongoing global discourse about employing copyrighted materials for training extensive language models.

Scott Farquhar, CEO of the Tech Council and co-founder of Atlassian, previously remarked that Australia’s copyright laws are “extremely detrimental to companies investing in Australia.”

In August, it was disclosed that the Productivity Commission was evaluating whether tech companies should receive exemptions from copyright regulations that hinder the mining of text and data for training AI models.

However, when asked about the risk of Australia losing investment in AI development and data centers if it doesn’t relax its fair use copyright laws, Mr. Lehane responded to the audience:

“No…we’re going to Australia regardless.”

Lehane stated that countries typically adopt one of two stances regarding copyright restrictions and AI. One stance aligns with a US-style fair use copyright model, promoting the development of “frontier” (advanced, large-scale) AI; the other maintains traditional copyright positions and restricts the scope of AI.


“We plan to collaborate with both types of countries. We aim to partner with those wanting to develop substantial frontier models and robust ecosystems or those with a more limited AI range,” he expressed. “We are committed to working with them in any context.”

When questioned about Sora 2 (Open AI’s latest video generation model) being launched and monetized before addressing copyright usage, he stated that the technology benefits “everyone.”

“This is the essence of technological evolution: innovations emerge, and society adapts,” he commented. “We are a nonprofit organization, dedicated to creating AI that serves everyone, much like how people accessed libraries for knowledge generations ago.”

AI opened on Friday stopped the ability to produce a video featuring the likeness of Martin Luther King Jr. after his family’s complaints about the technology.

Lehane also mentioned that the competition between China and the United States in shaping the future of global AI is “very real” and that their values are fundamentally different.

“We don’t see this as a battle, but rather a competition, with significant stakes involved,” he stated, adding that the U.S.-led frontier model “will be founded on democratic values,” while China’s frontier model is likely to be rooted in authoritarian principles.

“Ultimately, one of the two will emerge as the player that supports the global community,” he added.

When asked if he had confidence in the U.S. maintaining its democratic status, he responded: “As mentioned by others, democracy can be a convoluted process, but the United States has historically shown the ability to navigate this effectively.”

He also stated that the U.S. and its allies, including Australia, need to generate gigawatts of energy weekly to establish the infrastructure necessary for sustaining a “democratic lead” in AI, while Australia has the opportunity to create its own frontier AI.

He emphasized that “Australia holds a very unique position” with a vast AI user base, around 30,000 developers, abundant talent, a quickly expanding renewable energy sector, fiber optic connectivity with Asia, and its status as a Five Eyes nation.

Two Years After the School Phone Ban in Australia: What Changes Have We Seen? | Children

When the Australian Christian College, a secondary school situated in Melbourne’s Casey suburb, enforced a mobile phone ban, it was driven by numerous factors. There was an escalation in peer conflicts online, students had difficulty maintaining focus, and teachers noticed students engaging in “code-switching on notifications.”

Caleb Peterson, the school’s principal, stated, “When a phone is within arm’s reach, a student’s attention is only half in the room. We aimed to reclaim their full attention.”

Traditionally, cell phone bans in educational institutions necessitate that devices be stored in bags or lockers during class hours, with confiscation upon discovery to be retained in the school office until the day’s end. This month signifies the two-year mark since the introduction of phone bans across many Australian states. Victoria notably pioneered this move by prohibiting mobile phone usage in public primary and secondary schools back in 2020. By the close of the fourth term in 2023, Western Australia, Tasmania, New South Wales, and South Australia implemented similar measures, with Queensland limiting mobile phone use starting early 2024.

The announcement regarding the ban received endorsement from both parents and politicians, many of whom contended that: restricting access to phones enhances focus and minimizes distractions, though some experts expressed doubts concerning its efficacy. “The effects have been evident,” Peterson remarked. “Post-ban, we’ve enhanced class beginnings, diminished disruptions, and improved class dynamics. Conflicts related to devices have reduced, and recess and lunch have transformed. We now see games, conversations, and positive interactions among students and staff. That’s the atmosphere young people seek.”


A year following the implementation of the ban, a survey involving nearly 1,000 public school principals, conducted by the NSW Department of Education’s Center for Education Statistics and Evaluation, revealed that 95 percent still advocated for the ban. Furthermore, 81% believed the ban enhanced student learning, 86% indicated improved student interactions, and 87% perceived fewer classroom distractions.

Research from South Australia—released earlier this March—indicated that 70% of educators noticed increased focus and engagement during learning periods, while 64% noted “a reduction in the rate of serious incidents” attributable to device usage.

Lucaya, a graduate from a western Sydney high school in 2024, views the ban as an “overreaction.” Having experienced both unrestricted cell phone use and the ban during her final year, she reports that students still find covert ways to use their devices.

“Teenagers regard cell phones as vital,” she asserts. “It provides them with a sense of safety and security. Denying them something that holds such significance will only exacerbate stress and anxiety, complicating matters for teachers and administrators.” [and] assisting staff in coping.”

Nevertheless, anecdotal evidence from dialogues with students and staff across various public and private institutions suggests a general consensus that the ban has yielded positive outcomes. An anonymous high school teacher noted that simply having mobile phones present in classrooms can prove distracting, even if not actively used. “They simply offer opportunities,” she commented. “You can distinctly notice the difference in their absence.”

Many students believe the ban has created a more equitable learning environment. Amy, a Year 11 student at a public high school in Sydney’s west, remarked that eliminating mobile phones in classrooms has curtailed misbehavior while also fostering social connections for those who spend excess time online.

“Students [feel more at ease] “It fosters a safe environment where we don’t have to stress about people sharing pictures of us,” she stated.

Mariam, a Year 11 student at a public high school in Sydney’s south, felt that the phone ban was “unjust” and claimed that teachers occasionally used it to exert authority, but admitted it positively influenced learning outcomes. Aisha, a Year 11 student from a private Islamic school in Sydney’s west, noted that the phone ban has helped her “maintain attention longer and perform better academically.”

Dr. Tony Mordini, principal of Melbourne High School, a public selective institution, has observed this heightened attention firsthand. His school adopted a no-phone policy in January 2020, following guidelines from the Victorian Department of Education.

“From a professional perspective, this ban has clearly had a beneficial impact,” he stated. “Students exhibit increased focus during lessons and are less sidetracked by online distractions. Furthermore, the absence of phones has significantly curtailed opportunities for cyberbullying and harassment in classrooms.”

However, Mordini acknowledges that the ban also curtails certain student opportunities.

“It’s crucial to recognize what we’ve surrendered,” he remarks. “Mobile phones can serve as powerful educational tools, capable of storing extensive content, assisting with research, capturing photographs, creating videos, and hosting valuable applications. Lacking a mobile phone necessitates reliance on the traditional resources and devices provided by the school.”

Professor Neil Selwyn from Monash University’s School of Education, Culture, and Society, stated, “We’ve been informed that banning phones will curb cyberbullying, enhance concentration in class, and reduce the need for teachers to discipline for phone misuse.” Some politicians promised to boost student learning and mental health, but a significant impetus behind these bans was their popularity.

He suggested that schools might serve as a stand-in for wider concerns about children and their device usage, but questions whether schools serve as the optimal solution.

“Young people spend a significant amount of time outside school, thus parents and families must engage in discussions on regulating their children’s device usage at home,” he emphasizes. “Regrettably, this isn’t a priority for most policymakers, so enacting phone bans in schools feels like an easy way to address the broader issue of excessive digital device use.”

Mr. Selwyn indicated that Australia’s phone ban was not implemented “with the intent of thoroughly investigating its effectiveness” and termed specific research into this field as “not conclusive or particularly rigorous.”

He further asserted that recent government data from New South Wales and South Australia is “not particularly illuminating.”

“The critical concern remains how these bans will affect us over time,” he noted. “Claims suggesting these bans suddenly result in dramatic improvements may sound politically appealing, but the tangible impact of these bans necessitates more comprehensive and ongoing investigation.

“We must go beyond merely asking principals if they believe student learning has enhanced. We need to enter classrooms and engage students and teachers about their varied experiences with the ban, and the potential benefits they foresee moving forward.”

He referenced a recent UK study of 30 schools and over 1,200 students which concluded that “students in schools devoid of smartphones showed no notable differences in mental health, sleep, academic performance in English or mathematics, or even disruptive behavior in class.”

“While some studies imply a connection between phone bans and improved academic performance, they are not deemed to provide reliable evidence of direct causation,” he states. “It would be imprudent to assume a phone ban would singularly and significantly rectify these issues.”

Peterson takes care not to “exaggerate” the ban’s implications but asserts that it aims to “foster conditions conducive to successful learning and friendships.” Despite exempting medical management, disability support, or assistive translation applications, he contends that academic flow is enhanced, conflict is reduced, and social unity is improved. His school’s “health metrics” indicate “lessened psychological distress.”

“Phone bans are not a panacea,” he notes. “However, they are a valuable resource, particularly when paired with digital citizenship, mental health advocacy, and positive playground initiatives.”

Peterson conveyed that numerous students suggested the ban offers them a “reprieve.”

“Phone bans have now simply become the norm, with real and modest benefits that are genuinely worthwhile.”

Australia Faces Choice Between Chinese-Owned TikTok and Trump Billionaire Supporters

Is it a China-owned TikTok, or is it managed by a consortium of billionaires backed by Trump?

This is the question Australia is being prompted to contemplate.

The Trump administration stated that the agreement proposed by TikTok to continue its U.S. operations would involve Americans, transferring control to a U.S. firm with seven board members. Donald Trump has indicated that a group of U.S. companies, including Oracle’s Larry Ellison and Fox Corporation’s Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch, are part of this deal.

TikTok is owned by the Chinese entity ByteDance. In 2024, the U.S. Congress enacted a law to prohibit social media apps unless sold to a U.S. company, citing privacy and national security issues. The Trump administration has repeatedly extended this ban while negotiations continue between the U.S. and China.


According to White House press secretary Karolyn Leavitt, TikTok’s own algorithm will be “managed by the U.S.”

Liberal Senator James Patterson commented that Australia should transition to the U.S. version of the app as the deal advances.

“If there were a safe version of TikTok in the U.S., it would be unfortunate for the Australian version to remain under the control of foreign authoritarian governments,” he remarked to Murdoch. Sky News.

Tom Sulston, policy director for Digital Rights Watch, highlighted that the issue lies not in ownership, but rather in pervasive user surveillance, describing the transition to U.S. control of TikTok as “puzzling.”

“Ownership isn’t the main concern. The issue is the continuous invasive monitoring of users. U.S.-owned TikTok users do not enjoy greater privacy than those using the Chinese version, as there is a lack of effective regulation of social media firms,” he stated.

“TikTok users remain under extensive surveillance while online, which is utilized for profiling by both them and the National Information Services.”

Sky Predabeck, a fellow at the Australian Institute; emphasized the need for a Royal Commission and expressed her concerns about TikTok’s influence on media representation and public discourse.

“If the Murdochs own TikTok, this would give a new level of power over media, especially since TikTok plays a crucial role in public discussions and elections,” she explained.

Sulston argued that TikTok’s algorithm would likely remain just as opaque under U.S. control, as Meta and other platforms utilize their algorithms with almost no transparency.

“These companies depend on secret algorithms that exploit industrial-level surveillance of users to suggest content and advertisements.”

Dr. Dana McKay, Associate Dean of Interaction, Technology and Information at RMIT University, proposed that Australia should develop its own local version of TikTok for better data and security management.

However, McKay cautioned that ownership changes might lead to an app version that fails to meet user expectations. The core appeal of TikTok is its algorithm, and there is uncertainty about whether the data used for recommendations would be transferred to the U.S. during the transaction.

“Currently, Oracle is in the process of reconstructing the algorithm, but there may be a significant drop in user experience until sufficient data is gathered on viewing habits,” McKay added. “This could take days or weeks, depending on how much data the existing algorithm relies on.”

Will this deter users or drive them to another application? Sulston referenced News Corp’s previous unsuccessful venture into social media with MySpace.


In 2005, News Corp invested USD 580 million during a boom in online social networking. MySpace was valued at USD 12 billion at its peak, but then Facebook emerged, offering better navigation and features.

By June 2008, Australians were visiting Facebook more than MySpace, a trend that didn’t occur in the U.S. until 2009.

Frustrated, Rupert Murdoch sold MySpace in 2011 for USD 35 million.

“News Corp sold MySpace for significantly less than its original purchase of around USD 5 billion. Perhaps this will be another misstep,” Sulston noted.

The federal government maintains its stance on TikTok, which is banned on government devices, and indicates ongoing oversight of U.S. developments during the transaction process.

New Tektite Discovery Sheds Light on 11-Million-Year-Old Asteroid Impact in Australia

Tektite forms almost pure glass (with minimal crystalline inclusions) when space debris impacts the Earth, causing surface materials to melt and be ejected hundreds or thousands of kilometers away.

“Tektite is a specific type of glass formed by impacts, recognized particularly for its distribution across extensive spray fields far from the source crater,” stated Professor Fred Jordan from Curtin University and his team.

“The widespread distribution in Central Europe (14 million years ago), North America (35 million years ago), the Ivory Coast (1 million years ago), and from China to Australia (780,000 years ago) has been traced back to the spread originating from Central Europe, known for four distinct scattered fields located in Central America (800,000 years ago).

“The corresponding tektites include Moldavites, Bediasite-Georgiaite, Ivorites, Australiasites, and Belizites, respectively.”

A newly identified type of Tektite, called Ananguite, has been found primarily in South Australia.

“Discovering a new Tektite field is akin to opening a new chapter in Earth’s tumultuous geological history,” remarked Professor Jourdan.

“These glasses are indigenous to Australia and reveal ancient impact events previously unknown to us.”

“Each piece acts as a small time capsule from the depths of our planet’s history.”

“What adds intrigue to these findings is that, despite the considerable impact, the crater has yet to be located.”

“Understanding when and how frequently large asteroids strike Earth can also assist in evaluating the risk of future impacts, which is vital for planetary defense.”

“The glasses differ from all previously known tektites,” noted PhD candidate Annam Solino from AIX-Marseille University.

“These tektites are distinct due to their unusual chemistry and an approximate age of 11 million years.”

“They indicate a shock event that is completely separate from the fields associated with well-known Australian tektites.”

“While Australian tektites formed roughly 780,000 years ago and have spread across the globe, these tektites are significantly older and suggest major impacts that were previously overlooked.”

The team’s research paper was published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

Newly Discovered Marsupial Species in Australia

The newly identified Woylie species, Bettongia haoutharae, is likely already extinct, according to researchers from Curtin University, the Western Australian Museum, and Murdoch University.

“Woylies act as ecosystem engineers, moving several tons of soil each year in search of their favorite mushroom snacks,” says Jake Newman Martin, a Curtin University student, along with colleagues.

“These adorable kangaroo relatives from Western Australia are among the most endangered mammals, as conservation efforts continue to save species at risk.”

In this recent study, the researchers examined fossils found in caves in southwestern Australia.

They uncovered an entirely new species and two new subspecies.

“This discovery unveils significant insights into the diversity of Woylies, also known as the brush tail veton,” explains Newman-Martin.

“Woylies are endangered marsupials that have been the focus of conservation initiatives for many years.”

“This new study officially recognizes it as a distinct species based on fossil evidence, along with two new variants of Woylies for the first time.”

“Regrettably, many of these species went extinct before we even became aware of them.

“Our findings categorize the endangered Woylie into two living subspecies, which are crucial for breeding and translocation strategies aimed at increasing population size and genetic fitness.”

Dr. Kenny Traboillon, curator of terrestrial zoology at the Western Australian Museum, stated:

“This research revealed various species and broadened the known diversity of Woylies by analyzing skull and body fossil materials that hadn’t been thoroughly examined before.”

“What our research highlights is that studying fossils alongside genetic tools can offer vital insights to aid conservation efforts for this endangered native species.”

Concerns have been raised that AI could exacerbate racism and sexism in Australia, as human rights commissioners expressed during internal discussions within the Labor party regarding new technologies.

Finlay noted the challenges of identifying embedded biases due to a lack of clarity regarding the datasets used by AI tools.

“Algorithmic bias means that discrimination and inequality are inherent in the tools we utilize, leading to outcomes that reflect these biases,” she stated.

“The combination of algorithmic and automation biases leads individuals to rely more on machine decisions and potentially disregard their own judgment,” Finlay remarked.

The Human Rights Commission has consistently supported an AI Act that would enhance existing legislation, including privacy laws, and ensure comprehensive testing for bias in AI tools. Finlay urged the government to quickly establish new regulations.

“Bias tests and audits, along with careful human oversight, are essential,” she added.


Evidence of bias in AI technologies is increasingly reported in fields like healthcare and workforce recruitment in Australia and worldwide.

A recent survey in Australia revealed that job applicants interviewed by AI recruiters faced potential discrimination if they had accents or disabilities.

Ananda Raja, a vocal proponent for AI development, noted the risks of training AI systems using exclusively Australian data, as well as the concerns of amplifying foreign biases.

While the government prioritizes intellectual property protection, she cautioned against limiting domestic data access, warning that Australia would be reliant on overseas AI models without adequate oversight.

“AI requires a vast array of data from diverse populations to avoid reinforcing biases and harming those it aims to assist,” Ananda Raja emphasized.

“We must liberate our data to better train our models, ensuring they authentically represent us.”

“I am eager to support content creators while freeing up data, aiming for an alternative to foreign exploitation of resources,” Ananda Raja stated.

She cited AI screening tools for skin cancer as examples where algorithmic bias has been documented. To combat bias and discrimination affecting specific patients, it is essential to train these models on diverse datasets to protect sensitive information.


Finlay emphasized that any release of Australian data needs to be handled fairly, but she feels the emphasis should be on establishing appropriate regulations.

“It’s certainly beneficial to have diverse and representative data… but that is merely part of the solution,” she clarified.

“We must ensure that this technology is equitable and is implemented in a manner that recognizes and values human contributions.”

Judith Bishop, an AI expert at La Trobe University and former data researcher at an AI firm, asserted that increasing the availability of local data will enhance the effectiveness of AI tools.

“It is crucial to recognize that systems developed in different contexts can be relevant, as the [Australian] population should not exclusively depend on US data models,” Bishop stated.

eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant has also voiced concerns regarding the lack of transparency related to the data applied by AI technologies.

In her statement, she urged tech companies to be transparent about their training datasets, develop robust reporting mechanisms, and utilize diverse, accurate, and representative data for their products.

“The opacity surrounding generative AI’s development and deployment poses significant issues,” Inman Grant remarked. “This raises critical concerns about the potential for large language models (LLMs) to amplify harmful biases, including restrictive or detrimental gender norms and racial prejudices.”

“Given that a handful of companies dominate the development of these systems, there is a significant risk that certain perspectives, voices, and evidence could become suppressed or overlooked in the generated outputs.”

Newly Discovered Giant Stick Insect Species in Australia

Australian entomologists unveil a remarkable new species from the Stick Insect genus Acrofella, identified from two female specimens and their eggs.

Originally described in 1835, Acrofella is a genus of stick insects belonging to the tribe Phasmatini.

Species in this genus inhabit nearby regions including China, Australia, New Guinea, Tasmania, and Lord Howe Island.

The newly classified Acrofera species is found in the highlands of the Wettropic Bioregion in Queensland, Australia.

“Key locations include Lewis National Park, Evelyn Tableland (likely encompassing Maarlan National Park), Topaz, Upper Baron, Mount Hypamie, and Dumbra,” stated Professor Angus Emmott from James Cook University and his colleague Ross Coupland.

The new species, named Acrofera Alta, can reach lengths of up to 40 cm (16 inches) and weigh approximately 44 g.

Typically light brown in color, this species is exceptionally camouflaged despite its large size.

“Although there are long stick insects in this region, they tend to have relatively light bodies,” explained Professor Emmott.

“As far as we know, this is Australia’s heaviest insect.”

The eggs of Acrofera Alta were also crucial in distinguishing it as a new species.

“Every stick insect species has distinct egg characteristics,” noted Professor Emmott.

“Their surfaces, textures, and corrosion patterns vary. Shapes can differ as well.”

“Even the caps of the eggs are uniquely identifiable.”

Researchers speculate that Acrofera Alta may not have been discovered earlier due to the inaccessibility of its habitat.

“Their environment could explain their large body size,” Professor Emmott added.

“It is a cool, damp habitat.”

“Larger body weight might enable them to endure colder temperatures, which could have led to their evolutionary characteristics over millions of years.”

The identification of such a large new insect species highlights the critical need to conserve remaining biologically diverse habitats and ecosystems, with potential undiscovered species like stick insects awaiting description.

The discovery of Acrofera Alta has been documented in a study published in the journal Zootaxa.

Among the world’s most remarkable fish, the leafy seadragon may soon face extinction due to widespread blooms of toxic algae affecting parts of Australia’s southern coast.

The elegant leafy seadragons (Phycodurus eques) belong to the same family as seahorses and pipefish and are adorned with leafy appendages that allow them to seamlessly blend into underwater kelp forests.

Unfortunately, both they and their relatives, the common weed seadragon (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus), have been discovered dead along extensive stretches of South Australia’s coastline.

A major storm, propelled by La Niña, has already led to a challenging year for marine wildlife. In April 2022, hundreds of dead weed seadragons washed ashore in Sydney alone.

This year, large blooms of algae from the species Karenia Mikimotoi emerged in March, affecting the Gulf St. Vincent near Adelaide, killing numerous fish and other marine organisms while even washing ashore dolphins, sea lions, and great white sharks.

Surfers and swimmers have experienced illness due to these algae blooms, and multiple oyster harvesting areas have been shut down for several months due to health concerns. There are fears that the harmful algae will spread along the southern coast of the continent.

The South Australian Government has indicated that the source of these blooms is a marine heatwave that began in September 2024, leading to average temperature increases of over 2.5°C that persisted even into winter. Floods on the Murray River in 2022 and 2023 washed excess nutrients into the Gulf St. Vincent near Adelaide, compounded by unprecedented upwellings of nutrient-rich waters in subsequent years.

This week, both state and federal governments have allocated $28 million AUD to address the ongoing crisis.

Janine Baker, an independent marine ecologist leading citizen science initiatives to gauge the scale of this disaster, states that thousands of seadragons have perished since the bloom began.

While no toxicological results have been confirmed from the seadragon carcasses, Baker notes that the die-off aligns with areas affected by harmful algae blooms. “Seadragons have small gill openings and side head openings that can easily become clogged with algae. Additionally, they struggle to swim efficiently in dense algae masses,” she explains.

The significant mortality of adult seadragons means that the population available for breeding from late 2025 to early 2026 will be severely diminished. “This encompasses not only the loss of adult individuals essential for reproduction each year but also the elimination of next-generation seadragons that could reproduce for up to 10 years,” comments Baker. “This leads to a significant reduction in the number of young seadragons that could be born in areas afflicted by the intense blooms during this time frame.”

David Booth from Sydney’s Institute of Technology states that the potential risk of extinction resulting from the ongoing event remains uncertain. “Nonetheless, the scale of the die-off across a crucial section of the seadragon habitat is profoundly concerning.”

Weedy sea dragons had recently been classified as vulnerable due to declining populations in Tasmania. “Now, with the suspected mortality events in South Australia, I fear there are serious implications for the species in New South Wales as well, but we won’t have a clear picture until thorough investigations are conducted at key seadragon locations following the bloom,” says Booth.

Christopher Keneally from the University of Adelaide remarks that the environmental catastrophe at hand is glaringly apparent, with toxic foam on the beaches, algae aerosols making surfers and swimmers ill, and marine life washing ashore. He warns that as climate change persists and ocean temperatures rise, we can anticipate a surge in such environmental crises.

Many algal bloom cells may settle in sediments, setting the stage for a continuation or resurgence of the blooms next summer, Keneally adds.

Identification documents, including driver licenses, will also be used to ensure compliance with the industry code effective since late June, and applicable to search engine logins starting in December.

The code mandates search engines to guarantee the age of all users. If an account holder is identified as under 18, the secure search function will activate, blocking access to adult content and other unsuitable material in search results.



Additionally, six more draft codes under consideration by the eSafety Commissioner will enforce similar age verification measures across various services regularly used by Australians.

Platforms that host or facilitate access to content like pornography, self-harming material, simulated violence, or any highly inappropriate content for minors must implement restrictions to prevent child access.

Last month, Inman Grant addressed the National Press Club, emphasizing the necessity for regulations to ensure child safety in all online spaces.

“It is vital to adopt a layered safety strategy that assigns responsibility and accountability to key chokepoints within the technology stack, such as app stores and device levels.”

The eSafety Commissioner previously announced intent behind the code during its development stage. Recent news coverage has renewed focus on its critical elements.

Some individuals welcome these changes. Recent reports indicate that Elon Musk’s AI Grok has integrated pornographic chat features. While Apple’s App Store is rated for ages 12 and up, advocates urge child safety organizations to reevaluate Apple’s ratings and enhance protective measures within its platform.

Both Apple and Google have begun implementing age verification at the device level, and apps may also be utilized to assess user age.

Justin Warren, founder of Pivotnine, a tech analysis firm, commented that the code represents a significant shift in communication regulations among Australians.

“It seems like a considerable overreaction following years of policy stagnation regarding the influence of major foreign tech companies,” he stated.

“It’s darkly amusing that more authority over Australians’ online experiences will be handed to those same foreign tech giants.”

Digi, an industry organization collaborating with eSafety Commissioners to establish the code, has opposed the idea of diminishing online anonymity, clarifying that the code targets specific platforms that handle or grant access to certain content.

“The Code introduces proportionate safeguards for accessing pornography and materials considered inappropriate for users under 18, such as highly violent content,” remarked Dr. Jenny Duxbury, Director of Digital Policy at Digi.

“These codes offer protective measures for specific circumstances rather than blanket identity verification requirements across the Internet.”

Duxbury noted that companies could utilize inference methods like account history and usage patterns to approximate users’ ages.

“Some services might opt for reasoning methods since they are effective and unobtrusive.”

However, those who attempt to implement such changes may be caught off guard, cautioned John Payne, chairman of Australia’s Electronic Frontier.

“It seems that many Australians are aware of the discussions around social media, but that’s not the case for the average person, especially when they’ll need to authenticate to access content rated for those over 18.”

Failure to adhere to the code could result in hefty penalties, including fines up to $49.5 million or social media bans. Further consequences may entail delisting from search results for non-compliant websites.

Payne advocates for introducing AI regulations that would prompt the federal government to reform privacy laws and enforce risk assessments for certain AI functions deemed as unacceptable risks.

He stresses the importance of legislating user care obligations for all digital service platforms.

“We believe this strategy would be more effective than relying solely on regulatory mandates,” he asserted.

Warren expressed skepticism, emphasizing that age verification technologies are effective, and highlighting that search engine codes were raised prior to the outcomes of the recent government review.

“Ultimately, theoretical applications must align with practical implementations.”

In response to a recent media report concerning the code, the eSafety Commissioner’s Office defended the age verification requirements for search engines.

“The sector’s code represents a critical opportunity to establish important safeguards, as search engines are key gateways for children to potentially harmful content,” stated the office.

Why did the government consider exempting YouTube initially?

Last November, when Congress introduced legislation banning access to social media for children under 16, then Communications Minister Michelle Roland indicated that YouTube would be exempted.

This exemption was justified on the grounds that YouTube serves “an important purpose by providing youth with educational and health resources.”

This decision surprised YouTube competitors such as Meta, TikTok, and Snapchat. TikTok described it as a “special deal.” YouTube has launched vertical video products like Instagram and TikTok reels, leading its competitors to believe it should be included in the ban.


What led the eSafety Commissioner to recommend banning YouTube?

As new regulations regarding social media platforms were being formulated, the Minister consulted with eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant.

In a recent report, Inman Grant highlighted findings from a youth survey indicating that 76% of individuals aged 10 to 15 use YouTube. The survey also showed that 37% of children who experienced potentially harmful content online encountered it on YouTube.

Additionally, it was observed that increased time spent on YouTube correlates with higher levels of depression, anxiety, and insomnia among youth, according to the Black Dog Institute.

“Currently, YouTube boasts persuasive design elements associated with health risks, including features that could encourage unnecessary or excessive usage (such as autoplay, social validations, and algorithm-driven content feeds),” noted Inman Grant.

“When combined, these elements can lead to excessive engagement without breaks and heighten exposure to harmful material.”

Inman Grant concluded that there is insufficient evidence to suggest that YouTube provides exclusively beneficial experiences for children under 16.

However, it’s noted that children may still view content on YouTube even if they are logged out and thereby prohibited from using accounts.


What is YouTube’s position?

In a recent statement, Rachel Lord, YouTube’s senior public policy manager for Australia and New Zealand, commented on the eSafety Commissioner’s advice which was examined and subsequently supported by Parliament. YouTube views the findings on community opinion regarding the platform’s suitability for younger audiences as being “inconsistent with government commitments.”

YouTube has been developing age-appropriate offerings for over ten years, and in Q1 of 2025, the company removed 192,856 videos for breaching its hate speech and abusive content policies, a 22% increase from the previous year.

The platform asserts its role primarily as a video hosting service rather than a promoter of social interaction. A survey conducted among Australian teachers revealed that 84% use YouTube monthly as a resource for student learning.

YouTube also stated that the eSafety Commission and potentially the Communications Minister may be reconsidering the exemption following pressures from YouTube’s competitors.


What about YouTube Kids?

YouTube asserts that it offers a platform tailored for younger users, restricting both the uploading of content and commenting features for children.

The company does not seek exemptions solely for its children’s products.

When questioned about YouTube Kids during the National Press Club event, it was indicated that the platform is considered low-risk, designed specifically for children, and possesses adequate safety measures. However, it was stated, “I cannot respond until I have seen the regulations.”


Can children access YouTube without an account?

Yes. Inman Grant confirmed that if teachers wish to show videos to their students, they can access YouTube without needing to log in.

She noted that YouTube has “opaque algorithms that create addictive ‘rabbit holes’,” and remarked that when she accessed the site while logged out, her experience was positive, empowering users to engage without being subjected to addictive technological features.

In response to YouTube’s assertions on Thursday, Inman Grant reiterated that the call for exclusion from the ban aims to “allow young Australians to access YouTube’s diverse content.” However, she clarified that her advice does not imply that children will lose access to YouTube’s educational resources.

“The new law strictly restricts children under 16 from holding their own accounts. They will not be able to access YouTube or other services while logged out,” she added.

“There is nothing preventing educators with their own accounts from continuing to share educational content on YouTube or other platforms approved for school use.”


What are the next steps?

The Minister will finalize the guidelines and identify the social media platforms covered by the ban in the upcoming months.

A trial on age verification technology is expected to be reported to the Minister by the end of July, which will establish the technology platforms must implement to prevent access for users under 16.

The government has announced that the ban is anticipated to come into force in early December.

Inman Grant highlighted in her National Press Club address on Tuesday that the proposed age limits for social media would be termed “delays” rather than outright “bans,” and are scheduled to take effect in mid-December. However, details on how age verification will be implemented for social media users remain unclear, though Australians should brace for a “waterfall of tools and techniques.”

Guardian Australia reported that various social media platforms have voiced concerns over their lack of clarity regarding legal obligations, expressing skepticism about the feasibility of developing age verification systems within six months of the impending deadline.

Inman Grant pointed out that age verification should occur on individual platforms rather than at the device or App Store level, noting that many social media platforms are already utilizing methods to assess or confirm user ages. She mentioned the need for platforms to update eSafety on their progress in utilizing these tools effectively to ensure the removal of underage users.


Nevertheless, Inman Grant acknowledged the imperfections of the system. “For the first time, I’m aware that companies may not get it right. These technologies won’t solve everything, but using them in conjunction can lead to a greater rate of success.”

“The social media restrictions aren’t a panacea, but they introduce some friction into the system. This pioneering legislation aims to reduce harm for parents and caregivers and shifts the responsibility back to the companies themselves,” Inman Grant stated.

“We regard large tech firms as akin to an extraction industry. Australia is calling on these businesses to provide the safety measures and support we expect from nearly every other consumer industry.”

YouTube has committed to adhering to regulations outlined by former Communications Minister Michelle Rowland, who included specific exemptions for resources such as the Kids Helpline and Google Classroom to facilitate access to educational and health support for children.

Communications Minister Annika Wells indicated that a decision regarding the commissioner’s recommendations on the draft rules will be made within weeks, according to a federal source.

Ancient Frog Fossils Dating Back 55 Million Years Unearthed in Australia

The discovery of Litoria Tylerantiqua indicates that Australian tree frogs (Perodrius) were already present in Australia when the continent was still attached to Antarctica and South America.

Litoria Tylerantiqua lived in Australia during the early Eocene period, approximately 55 million years ago.

The fossilized frog bones were retrieved in the 1990s by paleontologists at the University of New South Wales while screenwashing clay samples from the Tingamara fossil frog site in Margon, Queensland.

“About 55 million years ago, Australia, Antarctica, and South America were connected as the last remnants of Gondwana,” stated Dr. Roy Furman and his colleagues at the University of New South Wales and the Australian National University.

“During this era, the global climate was warmer, facilitating forested corridors linking South America and Australia.”

“Previously, Australia’s oldest tree frogs were believed to have originated from the late Illuminocene (around 26 million years ago) and the early Miocene (approximately 23 million years ago).”

“Fossils from the late Illuminocene have been discovered in the Northern Territory’s kangaroo wells and the Etadunna formation in Lake Palancarina, South Australia. Furthermore, the Riversley World Heritage Area in Queensland unveiled an early Miocene tree frog.”

“This new species extends the fossil record of Perodrids by roughly 30 million years, bringing it closer to the timeframe when Australian tree frogs diverged from their South American counterparts,” they noted.

“Previous estimates based on molecular clock analyses suggest that Australian and South American frogs diverged approximately 33 million years ago.”

Litoria Tylerantiqua is the only other known frog from Margon, also identified as Platyplectrum casca (previously categorized as Lechriodus Casca), recognized as the oldest frog species in Australia.

Both have existing relatives in Australia and New Guinea, showcasing incredible resilience over time.

“Despite their fragile nature, these frogs have surprisingly thrived, surviving numerous major extinction events since their origin around 250 million years ago.”

“Current global extinction threats, fueled by human activities like rapid climate change and the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria, pose significant challenges for frogs. The fossil record reveals how certain frog groups have navigated past adversities, potentially by adapting to less-threatened habitats.”

“This insight might guide future conservation efforts, such as relocating endangered frogs to safer environments.”

One such species, the Southern Corroboree Frog (Pseudophryne corroboree), is currently endangered due to habitat hostility caused by climate change.

“If fossil records show similarly structured frogs occupying very different habitats, today’s frogs could potentially benefit from reintroductions into comparable environments.”

The findings are detailed in a study published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

The minister highlighted that Australia stands to “reap significant benefits” from AI adoption, particularly emphasizing increased productivity and economic growth. Ayers, who grew up on a cattle farm near Lismore, noted that both white-collar and blue-collar jobs have much to gain from automation and new technologies.

Drawing from his experience with manufacturing unions, he acknowledged the harsh reality that many workers have internalized the belief that the only more detrimental alternative would be for Australia to become a technological dead-end.

“However, I want to encourage companies and employers to consider the impact of AI adoption on enhancing job quality,” Ayers stated.

“Our industrial relations framework allows for adequate consultation and engagement at the corporate level, fostering discussions about these issues on an individual workplace basis.”

Recently, Australia’s Business Council released significant reports detailing Australia’s potential to emerge as a global leader in AI, enhancing productivity and boosting living standards through economic expansion.

The Australian Union Council reported in December that one-third of Australian workers are at risk of unemployment due to the introduction of AI.

“A recently published BCA document highlighted a significant level of skepticism among Australians regarding this new wave of technology, which is not unusual for our country,” Ayles remarked.


“Every wave of technological transformation shapes the labor market. This is a fact. The adverse consequences of technological evolution in employment have historically been outweighed by new investments and developments within employment and technology.”

Ayers also affirmed that the Labor party would sustain its forward agenda for Australia, emphasizing an “active” focus on boosting the production of key minerals, iron, and steel as part of the renewable energy transition.

“I am committed to doing everything in my power to establish new factories and enhance industrial capacities,” he stated.

“Specifically, areas like Central Queensland and Hunter and Latrobe have the opportunity to intersect with future energy benefits and industrial capabilities, permitting Australia to better support these communities as well.”

New Deep-Sea Flapjack Octopus Species Found Near Australia

The Carnarvon Flapjack, known scientifically as opisthoteuthis carnarvonensis, is a newly identified species of octopus. This small, gelatinous octopus measures approximately 4 cm in diameter and features large eyes and vibrant blood-red tentacles.

The Flapjack Octopus belongs to the Opistrotidae family, making it a deep-sea octopod and part of the finned octopod sub-order known for its liver-like characteristics.

Globally, around 50 species are recognized, with 15 of them recorded in Australian waters.

These octopuses have the remarkable ability to flatten their bodies resembling pancakes or flapjacks, hence their common name, or they can appear as small, gelatinous umbrellas.

With disproportionately large eyes, they are well-equipped to spot prey in the dimly lit depths they inhabit.

Their diet mainly consists of worms and small crustaceans, which they catch using their tentacles.

Dr. Tristan Werhev, a systematic taxonomist from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, stated, “The octopods of the Opistrotidae family are characterized by a distinct combination of external and internal features.”

He further described their anatomy, noting, “The very short dome-like mantle and terminal fins look visually different compared to their proportionately large eyes and thick arms.”

“Internally, they have branched optic nerves and an inner shell reminiscent of leaves (Gradius remnant). These features are shared only with the Cirroctopodidae family, which differs by having relatively large fins, no enlarged male suckers, and unique pallial intubation.”

Opisthoteuthis carnarvonensis is the 10th and latest species described based on specimens collected during the 2022 voyage of the Research Vessel (RV) Investigator.

During the month-long expedition, researchers employed advanced cameras, nets, and sleds to gather samples and capture images from deep-sea environments thousands of meters below the surface.

Five specimens used for the species description were collected from depths ranging between 1,044 and 1,510 m near Carnarvon Canyon and Gascoyne Marine Parks in Western Australia.

Dr. Venetia Joscelyne, a researcher at CSIRO Marine National Facilities, stated, “The 2022 voyage off Western Australia was crucial for enhancing our understanding of the region’s undersea habitats and biodiversity.”

She added, “For the first time, Carnarvon Canyon and Gascoyne Marine Park have been meticulously mapped and explored down to over 5,000 meters.”

“Conducting research in remote offshore or deep-sea environments is typically challenging; the RV Investigator provides researchers with an impressive array of tools for this purpose.”

“During just this single research voyage, we have observed many new species being identified.”

“Incredibly, scientists estimate that more than 1,000 new species remain to be described from specimens collected during RV Investigator voyages over the past decade.”

Entomologists Identify 71 Native Bee Species in Australia

The recently identified species are part of the rare subgenus Bee Austrothil (genus) Megachil. The oldest known amniotic fossils previously discovered date back to the late Carboniferous period, roughly 320 million years ago.

The findings from this 355 million-year-old snow plains slab, found by two amateur paleontologists, reveal that reptiles were already present 35 million years earlier than previously thought, at the dawn of the Carboniferous.

“Upon recognizing this, I understood that we had the oldest evidence globally of animals akin to reptiles, pushing back the evolutionary record by at least 35 million years beyond prior findings in the Northern Hemisphere,” stated Professor John Long from Flinders University.

Abroad, particularly in states like California, robots are more commonplace in daily life. Following initial self-driving vehicle tests in cities like San Francisco, humans now share sidewalks with robots.


It’s similar to a wheel locker, as robotics partners with Uber Eats and DoorDash deploys an army of robots on Los Angeles sidewalks for take-out meals and groceries.

Delivery robots have also been delivering meals in Europe for years. Countries like Sweden, Finland, and the UK allow customers to summon robots through food delivery apps.

However, autonomous robots are still a rarity in the Australian market.

One of the main obstacles hindering this technology in Australia is the uncertainty surrounding the legal status and safety of delivery robots.

When Australia trialed a robotic “mobile parcel locker” in Brisbane in 2017, its effectiveness was questioned as it required human accompaniment and could only transport one parcel at a time.

Kate Lötel, an associate professor at the Peter Faber Business School at Australian Catholic University, anticipates that robots will lead to more affordable delivery solutions.

A newly discovered frog species found in Australia

Protemnodon Kangaroos lived in Australia and New Guinea from about 5 million to 40,000 years ago.
