Unlocking the Potential: Does Heat Therapy Enhance Brain Function?

As an enthusiast of cold water swimming, I previously explored its brain benefits. However, the emerging evidence on heat therapy fascinated me—particularly regarding its neurological advantages. This prompted a deeper investigation into the subject.

During my last trip to Finland and Sweden, I immersed myself in their sauna culture, learning that ‘sauna’ is pronounced ‘sow-na’ (with ‘ow’ rhyming with ‘how’), contrasting my South East London pronunciation.

Finnish saunas, reaching temperatures of 70°C to 110°C (158°F to 230°F) with low humidity, are extensively studied. Regular sauna use correlates with numerous physical benefits, such as reduced risks of high blood pressure, muscle disorders, and respiratory diseases. Recent research also identifies significant cognitive benefits, including fewer headaches, improved mental health, better sleep quality, and a decreased risk of dementia.

A large-scale study involving nearly 14,000 participants aged 30 to 69 tracked sauna habits over 39 years. The findings revealed that those who frequented saunas nine to twelve times a month exhibited a 19 percent reduction in dementia risk compared to those who visited less than four times a month.

Moreover, sauna bathing appears linked to various cognitive enhancements. For instance, a small trial involving 37 adults with chronic headaches compared those receiving headache management advice to participants who regularly attended saunas. The sauna group reported significantly reduced headache intensity.

Regular sauna use is also associated with lower risks of psychosis and increased vitality and social functioning in elderly individuals, reinforcing its potential cognitive benefits.

However, it’s crucial to recognize that not all heat treatments yield the same results. Various forms of heat therapy exist, each offering distinct benefits. For example, a trial with 26 individuals diagnosed with major depressive disorder showed that those receiving infrared heating sessions reported significant symptom reductions over six weeks compared to a sham treatment.

How Does Heat Therapy Benefit Brain Health?

Heat therapy’s efficacy appears closely linked to its anti-inflammatory effects. In a study following 2,269 middle-aged Finnish men, researchers found that individuals engaging in frequent sauna use exhibited reduced levels of inflammation, a factor significantly associated with depression and cognitive decline.

Another mechanism involves heat shock proteins, which are produced when body temperature rises during sauna use or exercise. These proteins help prevent misfolding of other proteins—a common feature in many neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Enhanced blood circulation also plays a role; heat exposure dilates blood vessels, thereby improving cardiovascular health. This indirect benefit to brain health can decrease risks associated with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Additionally, saunas may elevate brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels, vital for neuron growth. In an experiment with 34 men, participants receiving 12 to 24 sessions of infrared therapy displayed significantly higher BDNF levels and improved mental well-being compared to those doing low-intensity workouts.

Can Saunas Enhance Cognitive Skills?

Beyond long-term neurological advantages, the immediate effects of sauna sessions are promising. A study involving 16 men revealed that brain activity post-sauna sessions resembled a relaxed state, indicating potential improvements in task efficiency. Researchers suggest that heat therapy may help extend mental work capacity over prolonged periods.

However, excessive heat exposure can lead to fatigue and reduced cognitive function. Studies indicate that high-temperature environments may impair memory consolidation, making saunas less suitable for study sessions.

Do Hot Baths Offer Similar Benefits?

If you lack access to saunas, could hot baths serve as an alternative? While they may partially replicate sauna benefits, the evidence is still inconclusive. According to Ali Qadiri from West Virginia University, warm baths do elevate core body temperature and can improve mood and relaxation. Still, he cautions that robust data on saunas and dementia prevention far outweighs that for baths.

My local lake offers both cold water swimming and sauna experiences, prompting me to consider their combined effects. A Japanese study on the practice known as totonou, or alternating between hot saunas and cold baths, revealed enhancements in relaxation and reduced alertness after several rounds.

While more research is needed to determine if this combination is more effective than using heat or cold therapy alone, the overall evidence supports potential cognitive boosts from regular sauna visits, reinforcing my commitment to explore more heat and cold therapy options.

Why Embracing Nature Enhances Scientific Understanding: A Balanced Approach

As a dedicated nature writer, I strive to nurture a profound connection with the natural world. The term “nature connectivity” may sound idealistic, yet it is bolstered by a growing body of research. A 2025 study claims that increased feelings of “nature connection” and “oneness with nature” correlate with elevated spirituality and skepticism regarding “science over faith.” Such findings may astonish many in the natural sciences, and they certainly surprised me, but this notion resonates within recent nature-focused literature.

While ancient druids revered nature, cultivating sacred groves of mistletoe and oak, today’s enchantment often unfolds in the nature section of a bookstore, nestled between gardening and self-help. Many of us experience our connection to nature through the act of writing. We become surrogate birders, second-hand botanists, and armchair adventurers. This is perfectly acceptable; life is hectic, and most reside in urban or suburban settings. One of humanity’s great gifts is our ability to be transported through written words to the depths of forests and heights of mountains.

The real concern lies not in how we connect with nature, but in our perception of what we are connecting to. Nature isn’t a fantasy; it occupies the same earthly realm as us, and we are inherently part of it. When viewed through a scientific lens, the natural world remains awe-inspiring and captivating. It is perplexing to separate the beauty of science from a genuine appreciation of nature.

We might benefit from reevaluating our eagerness to extract lessons from nature. Is it possible to learn from moss about unity or understand the repelling forces of grass? Recent naturalists suggest fungi can help us grasp the cycle of life. However, we can also learn troubling lessons from shoebills about the harsh realities of nature, such as expelling weak young or manipulating hosts in dire ways. Seeking wisdom from nature may feel just as rational as consulting ChatGPT for guidance—both resources have extensive insights. Perhaps true enlightenment lies in discovering lessons within ourselves.

Then arises the timeless query: What role do humans play in this ecosystem? Some assert that nature writers need to practice silence. Yet the uncomfortable reality is that all writers appreciate their own voices. We must strike a balance between experiencing the external world and what transpires within us. Both perspectives hold immense value, and the best nature writers skillfully navigate these frontiers, reporting with clarity, expertise, and sensitivity. Broadening the definition of “outside” to include diverse human experiences enriches our narratives.

I hope to see nature writing flourish, embracing its imperfections. I envision it evolving into a richer, more intricate, interdisciplinary tapestry that reflects the dynamic nature of our world, whatever that encapsulates—our realities, the living environment, and our place within it.

During this festive season, it’s hard to miss seasonal designs like trees, holly, and joyful Santa figures. Among the most recognizable motifs are snowflakes. Although famously intricate, they can also be quite bothersome.

The snowflake’s unique structure is influenced by ice’s chemical makeup. While each snowflake is touted as one-of-a-kind, they exhibit intriguing mathematical patterns. Symmetry is a term we often use for shapes, where reflection symmetry means that one side mirrors the other when a line divides it.

Shapes can also showcase rotational symmetry, enabling partial rotations to maintain identical appearances. The count of distinct positions where the shape looks the same is known as the symmetry order. For instance, a square has a degree of 4 rotational symmetry, while an equilateral triangle exhibits a degree of 3.

Some shapes possess only rotational symmetry (like the Isle of Man’s emblem), while others exhibit only reflection symmetry (similar to a stick figure split down the middle).

Regular polygons combine both rotational and reflection symmetries, referred to as dihedral symmetries, allowing us to achieve additional symmetries. For example, reflecting a square vertically followed by horizontally results in a 180-degree rotation. Much like numerical addition, we can “add” symmetries, a concept rooted in group theory.

Snowflakes beautifully embody this concept. With a hexagonal formation, they reflect across six distinct lines through the center and can be rotated six times every 60 degrees. This symmetry arises from the chemical structure of water and ice, where hydrogen bonds form a rigid hexagonal lattice as water freezes.

This unique chemistry leads to the hexagonal foundation of most ice formations, including snowflakes. Variations in temperature, humidity, and pressure impact the specific shape of each snowflake, ensuring that while no two are alike, their basic form remains consistent.

As a mathematician, I am delighted to see such elegant shapes gracing winter, though I find the decorations (excluding the ones shown!) displaying snowflakes with 5 (ugh) or 8 (boo) branches incredibly irritating. Reader beware of seasonal snow fakes!

Embracing the Unconventional: How New Zealand Emerged as a Hub for Indie Games

TIf you’re just entering the gaming realm, you may not be aware of Pax Australia. This large-scale gaming conference and exhibition occurs annually at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Center every October. My favorite area has always been Pax Rising, which showcases indie video games and tabletop games, predominantly from Australia. This year, however, notable changes have emerged, with many outstanding titles coming from New Zealand across the Tasman.

At a booth hosted by Code – the New Zealand Government-supported Center for Digital Excellence – 18 developers from New Zealand showcased their upcoming games, drawing in a busy crowd excited about the local gaming scene. In terms of humor, head lice allowed me to control a parasitic headcrab monster that could seize control of people’s brains and manipulate them like puppets. how was your day is a charming time-loop game set in New Zealand, revolving around a young girl on a quest to find her lost dog. Meanwhile, kill something with friends is a cooperative multiplayer action game featuring bizarre medical trials, where I ripped off my own arm to battle hordes of enemies.

Two years after the massive success of Dredge, New Zealand’s independent gaming industry continues to flourish. According to an investigation by the New Zealand Game Developers Association (NZGDA), local game developer studio revenues have increased steadily each year since 2018, seeing a 38% rise to NZ$759 million (A$657 million) from 2024 to 2025. This amount is nearly double the A$339.1 million generated in Australia in 2024.

This surge in revenue is backed by remarkable successes such as Grinding Gear Games’ acclaimed Path of Exile series, which reported revenue of NZ$105 million between October 2024 and September 2025. PikPok, the studio behind the acclaimed Into the Dead series and the mobile hit Clusterduck, has recorded over 500 million downloads worldwide across all titles. Additionally, projects such as Flintlock: Dawn Siege, Crypto Master, and Dungeons and the Decadent Gambler have seen impressive figures as well. Some of these projects benefit from a 20% rebate provided by NZ On Air, which has paid out $22.4 million by 2024/25 to around 40 companies. For smaller studios lacking new investment, Code has become a vital vehicle for growth.

Founded in Dunedin in late 2019 by the New Zealand Government to support South Island studios, Code received a boost from government investments in 2022 to expand its national program, which not only funds developers but also provides them with industry-best practices. Recent funding rounds yielded nearly NZ$960,000 in prizes across 13 studios, with New Zealand National Party Minister Shane Letty promising double the funding in September, providing an additional NZ$2.75 million per year.

Multiple countries offer federal funding for game development, but what sets Code apart is its emphasis on training developers to compete on a global scale. Its programs encompass not only grants but also mentorship and professional skills workshops (covering areas such as media communication and budgeting). It also provides multiple funding streams, ranging from travel assistance to substantial grants (up to $250,000) for teams poised to grow. The initiative aims to empower developers to become independent. “In today’s environment, publishers and investors want to engage only with those who already have some validation,” states Vee Pendergrast, Code Development Manager. “We built that into our model.”

Mr. Pendergrast emphasizes that industry leaders invited to mentor will offer “cost-effective solutions to expensive challenges.” “Even if they’re receiving a consulting fee, their skills return to the ecosystem.”

According to Code’s estimates, every NZ$1 they invest yields NZ$2.67 in returns, and this is evident in the upcoming console release of Abiotic Factor, a Code-supported title by Deep Field Games, which has sold over 1.4 million copies solely on PC.

At the Code booth during Pax, developers shared similar traits: their games looked fantastic, the demos were engaging, and they had strong media communication skills. One standout for me was Canvas City, a turn-based tactical combat game involving rollerblading. The studio, Disc 2 Games, spun off from Black Salt Games, the creators of the Code-backed hit Dredge. The success of Dredge provides separate funding for Disc 2, enabling them to innovate without growing the original company.

“Code offers excellent support for first-time developers,” says Nadia Thorne, CEO and producer at Black Salt. Since Dredge launched, she has become a mentor for Code. “Many indie studios lack the luxury of [coming to Pax for] this kind of exposure. Pooling our resources allows us to attend numerous shows that we otherwise couldn’t access.”

Jevon Wright is developing his first game, Adaptory, after four years. This 2D survival game features players managing a crew that crash-lands in space and must build a base to survive. They discovered Code halfway through its development, allowing them to become part of the broader New Zealand scene. “We all know each other,” they express. “And we’re all here to support one another.”

Will Adamson demonstrating the game Apothecurse also praised the cooperative nature of this scene, stating, “We not only share ideas, experiences, and contacts, but also developers… There’s a true sense of community here.”

Steam lists 61 upcoming games from New Zealand for PC. This figure is impressive for a small nation, yet it’s just a fraction of the 19,000 games released on Steam in 2024 alone. To carve a niche in a saturated market, the games highlighted at Pax all presented something distinct. “We have a multitude of inventive, quirky, Kiwi-oriented products. That’s part of our overall brand,” explains Pendergrast. Consider Middle Management, for instance, an irreverent satire addressing office culture featuring a mind-draining octopus creature, or Dream Team Supreme, where two players control a two-headed robot using two decks of cards to battle monsters.

Not all projects backed by Code have emerged as commercial successes, but some stand out. “We’re happy to share our triumphs and setbacks and the experiences leading up to them,” notes Thorne. “We’re simply striving to make it easier for the next wave of developers.”

Women are not simply “smaller men.” For many years, medical research has primarily focused on male rodents, which lack the intricate hormonal cycles found in females, subsequently applying these findings to women as if they were the same. Fortunately, recent decades have seen a growing understanding that this oversight is detrimental to women’s health, often leading to treatments that are less effective for them than for men.

Recent studies on how sex chromosomes influence immune systems reveal another layer to this narrative. Overlooking the intricacies of women’s bodies impacts everyone, not solely women (see “Women’s Immune Systems Are Stronger – Now We Know Why”).

A significant part of the issue arises from averaging effects. While statistical methods can help clarify fluctuations and unveil impactful insights, excessive reliance on them can obscure critical signals. Women generally possess more robust and responsive immune systems compared to the average man, showing longer-lasting responses to vaccines and a lower likelihood of mortality from infections in older age.


Neglecting the complexity of women’s bodies affects everyone, not just women.

However, by combining male and female participants in medical research trials, distinct sex differences in reactions to antiviral medications and vaccines, although better than excluding women entirely, may still be obscured. This could result in men receiving inadequate dosages for effective treatment and women receiving excessive amounts. Furthermore, minimal attention has been given to how these differences impact transgender individuals.

Ultimately, researchers are uncovering how the X chromosome and hormones contribute to these sex-based differences. Insights from this research should help in refining treatments for a variety of conditions, from long COVID-19 to cancer, benefiting everyone. Embracing the complexity of our bodies rather than viewing women as “smaller men” is crucial.

Spending the Day with British Tech Enthusiasts and Nigel Farage: One of the Rare Politicians Embracing Cryptocurrencies

A gray morning greets Shadwell in east London. Yet, within the historical confines of Tobacco Dock, the gloom is transformed into vibrant neon lights, sleek vehicles, and buzzing conversations about cryptocurrency.

Over two days, advocates of Web3, the envisioned future of the Internet, gathered at the venue of its former exchanges. For many attendees, the highlight is a singular figure: Nigel Farage.

“I don’t care if you like me or not, I’m a champion of this space,” declared the Reform UK leader to an audience predominantly composed of male crypto enthusiasts at the Zebu Live conference.

“Either I’m here to bolster your community, or your community is here to bolster me. Regardless, this partnership benefits us both.”

Farage is aiming to forge a business relationship, emulating Donald Trump’s strategy, with hopes it will evolve into a financial backing for his forthcoming campaign. This year, the Reform Party became the inaugural major UK political party to accept contributions via Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Attendees noted Farage’s active presence on the circuit, having recently visited a digital asset summit just a mile away in Old Billingsgate.

“I aim to bring digital assets and cryptocurrencies from chilly London,” he stated at the Zev event.

“I recognized this after my bank account was depleted. [Cryptocurrency] represents ultimate freedom. It’s about managing your finances independently, making your own choices, and escaping authoritarian governments. Cryptocurrency embodies the ultimate 21st-century freedom, a lesson I’ve learned throughout my life.”

This sentiment resonates with the liberal leanings of crypto aficionados, who prize the anonymity and self-determination offered by digital currencies.

Many attendees became increasingly anti-establishment after Farage’s conflict with NatWest, following the bank’s closure of his accounts. They showed their support for the reformist leader by tweeting selfies during his presentations.

Farage’s hustler-like personality aligns with the cryptocurrency world. He asserts he would have been a crypto trader in the 1980s and expresses a keen interest in dabbling.

His narrative resonates with numerous young entrepreneurs present, who advocate for an internet that ensures anonymity, infiltrating every facet of life while allowing for rapid wealth accumulation.

The flashier, the better appears to be the mantra. At the conference entrance, a black Rolls-Royce Wraith convertible showcases CryptoAutos, a platform enabling purchases or rentals of cars using cryptocurrencies.


The conference featured advanced technology, swag, and gadgets. In a designated area, Sam Altman’s startup WorldCoin showcased a silver sphere inviting participants to scan their eyes as part of a project utilizing biometrics to differentiate between humans and AI entities.

It began rather quietly. The HMRC and the Secret Ledger panel on managing crypto taxation attracted fewer than 40 participants in a space that comfortably accommodated 200. The energy only escalated in the afternoon as Farage’s keynote approached.

“I don’t particularly like him,” mentioned one attendee. “But if he can ease complexities for people in this sector, they will be willing to listen, even if they don’t align with his political viewpoints.”

Farage stands out as the only prominent British political figure to clearly express his stance on cryptocurrencies. In a move likely to win over many audience members in east London, he proposed legislation to cut capital gains tax on crypto assets from 24% to 10%.

Keir Starmer’s administration aims for the UK to lead in securities tokenization, but the Prime Minister has remained largely silent on the matter. Similarly, Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has not voiced strong opinions. For Farage, this relatively small yet well-resourced group of crypto enthusiasts presents a significant opportunity.

However, some have expressed concerns about his approach to engaging with the sector. Simon Jones, an investor in open finance startup Burnx, walked out after news of Farage’s participation, labeling the event a “political extravaganza.”

“I believe he shouldn’t have been invited,” Jones commented. “He operates solely on a campaign platform, despite it being an industry event lacking proper oversight.”

“He’s emulating Donald Trump’s tactics here, and Trump has mastered this area, accruing substantial funds.”

The U.S. president has amassed millions in political donations from cryptocurrency billionaires and other tech giants, witnessing a rise in the value of his family’s crypto ventures, thereby enhancing the Trumps’ wealth.


In the UK, however, crypto donations face intense scrutiny due to fears they could disguise the origins of party funding and pave the way for hostile foreign influence.

Liam Byrne, the Labour MP for Birmingham and Hodge Hill, as well as chair of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, contends that crypto donations pose a significant risk to corrupt British politics.

Meanwhile, researchers at the Center for Financial Security (CFS) and the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) have begun examining the potential threats these donations may pose to democracy, security, and transparency.

As the crowd headed to the afterparty across the road, many seemed unconcerned that they could hold the key to Farage’s political ascent.

“Nigel Farage is one of the rare politicians supportive of cryptocurrencies,” remarked a conference attendee. “He’s shrewd to be here. If the crypto community rallies behind him, he stands to gain significantly.”

Transformative Concepts: The Case for Embracing AI Doctors | Books

wOur physicians are exceptional, tireless, and often accurate. Yet, they are human. Increasingly, they face exhaustion, working extended hours under tremendous stress, and frequently with insufficient resources. Improved conditions—like more personnel and better systems—can certainly help. However, even the best-funded clinics with the most committed professionals can lack essential standards. Doctors, like all of us, often operate with a mindset reminiscent of the Stone Age. Despite extensive training, the human brain struggles to cope with the speed, pressure, and intricacies of contemporary healthcare.

Since patient care is the principal aim of medicine, what or who can best facilitate this? While AI can evoke skepticism, research increasingly illustrates how it can resolve some of the most enduring problems, including misdiagnosis, errors, and disparate access to care, and help rectify overlooked failures.

As patients, each of us will likely encounter at least one diagnostic error during our lifetime. In the UK, conservative estimates indicate that 5% of primary care visits result in an inability to diagnose correctly, putting millions at risk. In the US, diagnostic errors can lead to death or lasting harm, affecting 800,000 individuals each year. The risk of misdiagnosis is amplified for the one in ten people globally with rare diseases.

Modern medicine prides itself on being evidence-based, yet doctors don’t always adhere to what the evidence suggests. Studies reveal that evidence-based treatments are dispensed only about half the time for adults in the US. Furthermore, your doctor might not concur with the diagnosis either. In one study, reviewers providing second opinions on over 12,000 radiology images disagreed with the original assessment in roughly one-third of cases, leading to nearly 20% of treatment changes. As workloads increase, quality continues to decline, resulting in inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions and falling cancer screening rates.

While this may be surprising, there is a comprehensible reason for these errors. From another perspective, it’s remarkable that doctors often get it right. The human aspects—distraction, multitasking, even our circadian rhythms—play a significant role. However, burnout, depression, and cognitive aging affect more than just physicians; they raise the likelihood of clinical mistakes.

Additionally, medical knowledge advances more rapidly than any doctor can keep up with. By graduation, many medical students’ knowledge is already outdated, with an average of 22 hours required for a study to influence clinical practice. With a new biomedical article published every 39 seconds, even reviewing just the summaries demands a similar time investment. There are over 7,000 rare diseases, with 250 more identified each year.

In contrast, AI processes medical data at breakneck speeds, operating 24/7 without breaks. While doctors may waver, AI remains consistent. Although these tools can also make mistakes, it’s important not to underestimate the capabilities of current models. They outperform human doctors in clinical reasoning related to complex medical conditions.

AI’s superpower lies in identifying patterns often overlooked by humans, and these tools have proven surprisingly adept at recognizing rare diseases—often surpassing doctors. For instance, in a 2023 study, researchers tasked ChatGPT-4 with diagnosing 50 clinical cases, including 10 involving rare conditions. It accurately resolved all common cases by the second suggestion and achieved a 90% success rate for rare conditions by the eighth guess. Patients and their families are increasingly aware of these advantages. One child, Alex, consulted 17 doctors over three years for chronic pain, unable to find answers until his mother turned to ChatGPT, which suggested a rare condition known as tethered cord syndrome. The doctor confirmed this diagnosis, and Alex is now receiving appropriate treatment.

Next comes the issue of access. Healthcare systems are skewed. The neediest individuals—the sickest, poorest, and most marginalized—are often left behind. Overbooked schedules and inadequate public transport result in missed appointments for millions. Parents and part-time workers, particularly those in the gig economy, struggle to attend physical examinations. According to the American Time Use Survey, patients sacrifice 2 hours for a mere 20-minute doctor visit. For those with disabilities, the situation often worsens. Transportation issues, costs, and extended wait times significantly increase the likelihood of missed care in the UK. Women with disabilities are over seven times more likely to face unmet needs due to care and medication costs compared to men without disabilities.

Yet, it is uncommon to challenge the notion of waiting for a physician because it has always been the norm. AI has the potential to shift that paradigm. Imagine having a doctor in your pocket, providing assistance whenever it’s needed. The workers’ 10-year plan unveiled by Health Secretary Wes Streeting proposes that patients will be able to swiftly discuss AI and health concerns via the NHS app. This is a bold initiative, potentially offering practical clinical advice to millions much quicker.

Of course, this hinges on accessibility. While internet access is improving globally, substantial gaps remain, with 2.5 billion people still offline. In the UK, 8.5 million individuals lack basic digital skills, and 3.7 million families fall below the “minimum digital living standard.” This implies poor connectivity, obsolete devices, and limited support. Confidence is also a significant barrier; 21% of people in the UK feel they are behind in technological understanding.

Currently, AI healthcare research primarily focuses on its flaws. Evaluating biases and errors in technology is crucial. However, this focus overlooks the flaws and sometimes unsafe systems we already depend upon. A balanced assessment of AI must weigh its potential against the reality of current healthcare practices.

wReflecting on childhood in the 1990s stirs up feelings of nostalgia. We roamed far and wide without supervision, rode our bikes, crafted burrows, and swam in streams. Post-school hours were spent crafting and playing board games; while the internet existed, my parents encouraged me to use a landline phone. Media was tangible—cassettes, CDs, VHS tapes—and often enjoyed together as a family. The memory of going to the video store to select a movie still thrills me.

These feelings are common, especially when you have a child of your own, and social media algorithms tap into this nostalgia. Three years post the birth of my son and starting a parenting column for The Guardian, I noticed my interest in “parenting in the 90s.” This phenomenon seems to have gained traction this year, with former 90s kids pondering how to raise their own children. It appears that significant technological advancements have resulted in valuable losses. But is it feasible to reclaim what was lost? And how have we adapted parenting since then?

“Absolutely, it’s a total pause,” states Justin Fromm, a father and content creator based in Las Vegas.
We’ve created a very successful replica video store in one of the rooms in his house for his daughter. “The whole family would pile into the car, head to the video store, and wander the aisles, deciding what to watch,” he reminisces about his childhood. “It was exhilarating and filled with possibilities. Scrolling online doesn’t compare.” There’s something special about physically going somewhere to select a movie together, the long-awaited anticipation of finally watching it. It felt like a true event. “Everyone remembers the ritual of choosing a movie together in a blue and yellow themed store, the carpet, the excitement.”

Although not everyone has the space or budget like Justin, the motivations behind his choices resonate widely. “As a parent, I consistently shield my kids from content I don’t deem healthy for their minds,” he explains. “We lean towards older films and shows, primarily due to their healthier pacing. They are not overly mixed or stimulating.” His daughters adore classic films like *Harriet the Spy* and *Dennis the Menace*, with *George of the Jungle* being the current favorite. Likewise, I found myself gravitating toward 90s media thanks to my son, with *The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh* capturing my attention. The contrast between the narrative pace of 1997’s *Teletubbies* and modern programming is striking.

Justin’s acclaimed video room represents a conscious effort to define screen time, aligning with the 90s parenting ethos. “Back then, people criticized TV for damaging brains, but it had its place in the living room,” he notes. “Now, media pursues us relentlessly, everywhere. In my household, media consumption happens at specific times and places.”

As concerns mount regarding the impact of screen time, alongside various campaigns advocating for childhoods free from smartphones, it’s understandable that many of us are reflecting on the era just before everything changed. Some parents, such as
schools, have introduced landlines for children, while a parent group in South Portland, USA, allows kids to call each other, thereby forming a “retro bubble” against screens. Browsing through 90s parenting-themed reels on Instagram (ironic, I know), I stumbled upon
a video depicting adults and children participating in a backyard water battle, all organized via landlines, of course, as they left their smartphones in bowls atop a high cupboard. Back when we weren’t glued to screens, our summers were often spent engaged in extensive neighborhood water fights, with mothers signaling the action when they appeared with buckets or garden hoses.

Jess Russell strongly values the importance of play. A former primary educator and special needs coordinator, Jess stays at home with her two children, aged one and three, and actively promotes learning through play on her Instagram account
@playideasforlittles. “I grew up in a rural setting, always outdoors. My mother was a stay-at-home parent, and we engaged in numerous arts and crafts,” she shares, striving to replicate this experience for her children. They spend ample time playing in the garden, engage in board games like *Hungry Hungry Hippos*, and watch TV as a family.

Part of Jess’s motivation for her current lifestyle stems from her disillusionment with educational directions that steer away from play and towards outcome-oriented systems. She feels fortunate to be at home with her children, a choice more attainable in the 90s when single incomes could usually support housing expenses. I share similar sentiments about working part-time. The nostalgia for the 90s reflects the struggles modern parents face trying to balance work and family time, all while fostering a playful environment.

It boils down to more than just screens; it encompasses connections, family moments, and shared time. “Parenting in the 90s exemplified ‘slow’ parenting,” Jess observes, explaining that days weren’t packed with scheduled activities. Boredom, as emphasized by Melanie Murphy, a mother of two from Dublin, is vital.

When her two- and four-year-olds experience boredom, their imaginations are activated, Melanie recounts. “They construct forts, turn floors into lava, and convert tables into dragon nests. We don old clothes and delve into dirt in search of bugs. They prepare meals and tidy the house… We groove to music and have dance parties. We watch my childhood DVDs on the projector. Sure, structured activities and adult-led plans create chaos, but as long as the kids are content, I’m fine with it.”

Certainly, kids from the 90s would chuckle at this.
One humorous video highlights the absurdities of 90s childhood, featuring a kid dashing after his mother in a changing room and giving himself a haircut in the kitchen. When I ask a friend if her parenting style resembles that of the 90s or if she knows someone whose does, she ponders: “Hmm, like sleep training, lots of TV, and burnt pancakes.”

She’s spot on. Yet, each advocate of 90s parenting I encounter acknowledges the allure of rose-colored glasses. I ask Melanie what elements of the 90s she’d prefer to leave behind. “Physical discipline. You were taught to ‘toughen up’ emotionally rather than to process feelings holistically,” she says, pointing to practices like sleep training and the “naughty step.” The negatives included “secondhand smoke everywhere, mental health neglect… The gender stereotypes were overwhelming, alongside diet culture and ultra-processed food norms.” Her mother counted calories with Weight Watchers, and even back then, Melanie found herself counteracting with junk food. Best left in the past. She also emphasizes that not every family enjoys movie nights together; for some, media consumption lacks supervision, and children might encounter highly inappropriate or traumatic content.

At times, the carefree approach of 90s parenting can veer towards negligence. Yet, I cherish how “free-range” my childhood was. Justin shares similar sentiments. “My parents weren’t always aware of my whereabouts, and that was okay,” he recounts. “I got hurt sometimes; my kids occasionally break their bones. We learned to avoid the actions leading to those breaks.” (Indeed, I broke my bones too.)

“That type of risk-taking is crucial; it’s how kids learn to assess situations. We’ve been scrutinizing our childhoods so much lately that we need to reclaim those teachings,” he remarks. He believes there’s been an overcorrection, and people “hunger for something freer, something resembling non-fear-driven parenting.”

In essence, we are in pursuit of balance. “We are more informed now—about emotions, neurodiversity, health, and nutrition—which undeniably has its merits,” adds Melanie. “It’s not a time machine I yearn for, but a beautiful fusion of the relaxed spirit of 90s parenting blended with today’s emotional intelligence.”

I thought it would be insightful to converse with someone who actually parented in the 90s, so Jess connected me with her mother, Lynn. “I savored those moments with my children, cherishing every hour spent outdoors or with friends,” she reminisces about the long days. She emphasizes that stores closed on Sundays, a simple joy allowing family time. “Many parents today yearn for that simplicity in family bonding.”

“We lived in a modest two-bedroom home and managed just fine… Now, it seems people must meet a certain living standard. That pressure is something I truly regret for them.” When I ask Lynn if there’s anything she admires about today’s parenting, she struggles to pinpoint anything specific. “I genuinely respect the balance modern moms seem to achieve. I never had that. It was undeniably straightforward.”

Initially hesitant about the concept of 90s parenting, Jessica admits it felt somewhat sentimental and was likely fueled by millennial nostalgia on social media. Yet, if that’s true, why write this? Is it sadness stemming from the fatigue of juggling work and parenting (especially with her son’s struggles to sleep)? Even reminiscing about the 1996 classic *Space Jam* evokes deep emotions tied to selecting a VHS at the local store. I can’t shake this longing for simpler times, perhaps indicating a need for more fun in my life. I’m thinking it might be time for a water fight. Who’s ready?

Embracing AI in Sports: Overlooking the Anger at Wimbledon 2025

WE all appreciate a good conversation. This year, Wimbledon certainly had its share of amusing moments. Initially, news broke that 300 judges had been substituted with AI robots. Soon after, it was revealed that the technology had its own unexpected glitch. Since Roger Federer switched from the Wilson racket, the sweet spot hasn’t made much of an impression in the last two weeks at Wimbledon.

To start with, the new electronic line judging system struggled to recognize Sonay Kartal’s swift sledge against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova during a match. Interestingly, this issue arose because the staff unintentionally powered down the system.


Moreover, a forehand from Taylor Fritz was mistakenly called out, even though it landed four feet inside the baseline. During his serve, the system was baffled by the ball boys still present on the court.

In comparison, this was less problematic than Kartal’s situation. Regardless, a narrative has emerged suggesting that technology is eroding our traditional practices while implying that machines cannot fully replace human judgment.

What went unnoticed amidst all the backlash is that Wimbledon actually implemented an upgraded version of the Hawkeye system it adopted back in 2007. This tech performs much better than the human eye, resulting in significantly fewer errors. The difference is not even debatable.

Historically, studies have indicated that umpires made mistakes about 8% of the time with close calls. However, players’ judgment tends to be even poorer.

When I inquired with IBM about players’ accuracy in calling lines at Wimbledon last year, my expectation was a rough parity of 50/50. Yet, out of 1,535 challenges in men’s and women’s singles matches in 2024, only 380 were successfully overturned—less than 25%. In simpler terms, players often guessed wrong about three out of four times when a ball was out.

Furthermore, Wimbledon officials emphasized the importance of technology in maintaining the integrity of sports. Unlike in the past when decisions led to shoulder shrugs from fans and gamblers, the current landscape sees players and officials targeted on social media with accusations of conspiracy.

During the last Rugby World Cup, Wayne Barnes shared his experience of severe online abuse targeted towards his family, asking, “Is this really a sport?” He is not alone in these concerns. In such a hostile environment, anything that aids officials is a welcome addition.

Even when umpires strive to be fair, they can be unconsciously swayed by crowd reactions. In one study involving 40 qualified soccer referees analyzing 47 incidents from Liverpool-Leicester matches, those who reviewed footage with crowd noise penalized Liverpool significantly less (15.5%) compared to a control group watching in silence.

Further research in Norway indicated that successful teams were more likely to receive advantageous penalty calls. Psychologists attribute this effect to cognitive biases. Regardless of opinions about machines, they remain impervious to these influences.

Critics of sports technology often resist change while demanding perfection. However, as Voltaire noted, perfection is the enemy of good. Instead, we ought to ask if the technology offers improvements and enhancements over previous systems.

The accuracy of Hawk-Eye has improved since its inception in 2007 and will continue to evolve. Although VAR has its critics, FIFA’s implementation during the World Cup and Club World Cups has been less controversial, allowing fans to witness the same replays that officials see. Hopefully, the Premier League is taking note.

Nevertheless, one thing remains certain: change is inevitable. As per Matt Drew of Statsperform, a leader in data and sports integrity, “There isn’t a flawlessly perfect system, but the technology is evidently more reliable than solely human decision-making.” He emphasizes that sports bodies believe technology aids in making more accurate decisions while safeguarding officials and players from harassment. The best sports like tennis and cricket manage to preserve the fan experience while integrating technology.

Consider this: at last year’s International Olympic Committee’s Artificial Intelligence Conference, we demonstrated divers in real-time. Judges were promptly informed of jump height, rotations, and distances as the athletes performed. Each dive was analyzed in less than a tenth of a second, allowing referees to more accurately assess dive quality and ensure fair scoring. Who could oppose that?

Meanwhile, as technology progresses, more traditions may fade away. Starting in September, for instance, the NFL will replace the traditional “chain gangs” used to mark first downs with Hawk-Eye technology. I personally will miss them, but it’s certainly more accurate than relying on methods from the 18th century.

Their new single Many Lives aims to recapture the RPG vibes you embraced at 12, which became a defining part of your identity. Drawing inspiration from classics like Skies of Arcadia, Phantasy Star Online, and Secret of Mana, they are ready to resonate with fans from that era.

This marks a bold move for the band, who previously collaborated with Defoons, covering a Eurodance classic. Nonetheless, members Megan James and Corin Roddick possess the background needed to pull it off. “We are avid fans of the JRPG genre,” they share. Their recent tracks have drawn significant influence from titles like Nier: Automata and Final Fantasy X. “Now, we’re navigating metaphorically, crafting an imaginative take on the Persona Formula.”

After five years since their last studio album and a decade honing their craft through remixes, Purity Ring operates independently under their own label, The Fellowship. Their forthcoming album, set for release in September, is described as the “soundtrack to an imaginary RPG… A narrative following two unfortunate characters striving to create a kinder world amidst the remnants of a broken man.”

The album didn’t initially start as a video game soundtrack, but as production progressed, the vision became clear. This realization gave birth to “Many Lives” and its B-side, Part II. “Many Lives serves as a gateway to this imaginary realm and its nucleus—akin to the beginnings of most JRPGs, where characters embark on their adventures.”

The narrative revolves around the authentic experiences of Purity Ring during the album’s development, intertwined with the duo’s “memories, fears, and comforts.” “This album,” they explain, “explores how gaming provides a journey that facilitates creative renaissance.”

Upon first listen, what captivates in “Many Lives” is the hauntingly beautiful choir, reminiscent of the iconic soundtrack from Ghost in the Shell. This chilling introduction transitions into an energetic breakbeat, delivering tracks perfect for revisiting classic anime while immersed in Jet Set Radio. Purity Ring expresses their fondness for this era: “The Ghost in the Shell soundtrack masterfully combined visuals. Experiencing it as a child was unforgettable.” For this project, the duo revisited the anime, creating music that embodies the world alongside the beloved game Nier: Automata.

Much like a Kawai soundtrack, “Many Lives” features unforgettable vocals alongside Bulgarian folk music, enriched by James’s vocoded lyrics. Purity Ring is unafraid to explore unconventional instruments for inspiration. They state they aren’t reliant on hardware synths and don’t consider themselves technical gearheads. “The Legend of Zelda series has consistently inspired us,” they mention. “Particularly, the Ocarina music from the N64 title.” A hint of the 1998 Ocarina of Time melody resonates throughout the tracks, akin to a half-remembered tune that lingers in your mind.

If the nostalgic vocals and retro Casiotone MT-240 sound aren’t enough to transport you back to gaming’s golden days, the accompanying cel-shaded graphics in the video showcase the duo’s deep admiration for all RPGs. Directed by Mike Sunday, the visuals are inspired by GameCube’s Daydream, harking back to an era when game developers embraced style over realism. A blend of Shinjuku and Hyrule evokes the opening map of classic JRPGs. Purity Ring draws inspiration from their favorite titles from the PS2 and GameCube eras while also paying homage to the PlayStation Portable. The imaginary RPG UI seamlessly fits within some of the bestsellers of handheld gaming.

For me, “Many Lives” feels like the soundtrack to afternoons spent playing Baten Kaitos (a sequel is still on my wishlist). For Purity Ring, the track “evokes a blend of past, present, and future—nostalgia for something you’ve never experienced but somehow still recall.” They aim to position this upcoming album as a new chapter, capturing the essence of the era while evoking the sensation of experiencing a life-altering game for the first time.

Australia Lacks Alternatives, But Industry Minister Advocates for Embracing AI to Achieve Global Leadership

As stated by the new Minister of Industry and Science, Tim Ayles, Australia must either “aggressively pursue” the advantages of artificial intelligence or risk becoming “dependent on someone else’s supply chain.” The Labor government intends to impose further regulations on these rapidly advancing technologies.

Ayles, previously associated with a manufacturing union, recognized that there is significant skepticism surrounding AI in Australia. He emphasized the need for dialogue between employers and employees regarding the implications of automation in the workplace.

The minister insisted that Australia has “no alternative,” stating that the country is embracing new technologies while striving to become a global frontrunner in regulating and utilizing AI.


Ayers remarked to Guardian Australia, “The government’s responsibility is to ensure that we not only lean towards the opportunities for businesses and workers but also to be assured of our capacity to tackle potential challenges.”

“Australia’s strategy must prioritize regulation and strategy for the advantage of its people,” he added.

Ayers, who was elevated to Cabinet last month after serving in a junior role within manufacturing and trade, now leads the direction of the Labor Government’s flagship initiative. This comprehensive plan connects manufacturing, energy transition, research, and business policies.

Ayers faces immediate challenges regarding AI policy. His predecessor, Ed Husic, established critical frameworks focused on developing the local industry and setting essential guidelines for AI usage, which included discussions around new independent AI regulations.

Less than a month into his new role, Ayers stated that the government is still defining its actions, considering the rapid advancements in technology from similarly-minded countries. He indicated that the response would involve laws and regulations that have yet to be finalized, emphasizing the importance of swift action for Australia.

“There is no alternative but to adopt an Australian approach,” he asserted. “This approach dictates how we shape Australia’s digital future and how we ensure that we gain agency in technology development alongside global partners in these matters.

“The alternative is to remain passive and find ourselves at the mercy of someone else’s supply chain.”

The minister highlighted that Australia stands to “reap significant benefits” from AI adoption, particularly emphasizing increased productivity and economic growth. Ayers, who grew up on a cattle farm near Lismore, noted that both white-collar and blue-collar jobs have much to gain from automation and new technologies.

Drawing from his experience with manufacturing unions, he acknowledged the harsh reality that many workers have internalized the belief that the only more detrimental alternative would be for Australia to become a technological dead-end.

“However, I want to encourage companies and employers to consider the impact of AI adoption on enhancing job quality,” Ayers stated.

“Our industrial relations framework allows for adequate consultation and engagement at the corporate level, fostering discussions about these issues on an individual workplace basis.”

Recently, Australia’s Business Council released significant reports detailing Australia’s potential to emerge as a global leader in AI, enhancing productivity and boosting living standards through economic expansion.

The Australian Union Council reported in December that one-third of Australian workers are at risk of unemployment due to the introduction of AI.

“A recently published BCA document highlighted a significant level of skepticism among Australians regarding this new wave of technology, which is not unusual for our country,” Ayles remarked.


“Every wave of technological transformation shapes the labor market. This is a fact. The adverse consequences of technological evolution in employment have historically been outweighed by new investments and developments within employment and technology.”

Ayers also affirmed that the Labor party would sustain its forward agenda for Australia, emphasizing an “active” focus on boosting the production of key minerals, iron, and steel as part of the renewable energy transition.

“I am committed to doing everything in my power to establish new factories and enhance industrial capacities,” he stated.

“Specifically, areas like Central Queensland and Hunter and Latrobe have the opportunity to intersect with future energy benefits and industrial capabilities, permitting Australia to better support these communities as well.”

mFour years after its announcement, and after two last minute delays, the latest title from Ubisoft’s historic fiction series Assassin’s Creed will finally be released on Thursday. Set in Japan in 1579, the period of intense civil war ruled by feudal Oda Bunaga follows two characters overcoming bloody chaos. A female ninja named Fujiwarajima Island and an African slave Yasusuke became samurai. According to Ubisoft, Japan is the series’ most requested setting for many years.

“I’m on the ride [this] For the 16 years of the franchise, every time we start a new game, Japan comes out and asks if this is the time.” says executive producer Marc-Alexis Coté. “We have never pushed beyond the conceptual stage with Japan.”

Confessions of an AI chatbot helper: Embracing the Future of Journalism

debtOr for a few hours a week, I write for a tech company worth billions of dollars. Joining me are published novelists, budding academics, and other freelance journalists. The workload is flexible, the pay is higher than we’re used to, and there’s no shortage of work. But what we write is never read by anyone outside our companies.

That’s because we’re not writing for humans, we’re writing for AI.

Large-scale language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT have made it possible to automate huge parts of our linguistic lives, from summarizing any amount of text to drafting emails, essays, and even entire novels. These tools have become so good at writing that they have become synonymous with the very idea of artificial intelligence.

But before we risk god-like superintelligence or catastrophic mass unemployment, we first need training. Rather than automating our lives with these fancy chatbots, tech companies are contracting us to help train their models.

The core of the job is writing fictitious responses to questions for a hypothetical chatbot. This is the training data that needs to be fed into the model. Before the “AI” can even try to generate “good” sentences, it needs examples of what “good” sentences look like.

In addition to providing our models with this “gold standard” material, we also help them avoid “hallucinations” (a poetic way of saying lies) by using search engines to give them examples of citing sources – without seeing such texts, the models cannot teach themselves.

Without better language data, these language models simply cannot be improved: their world is our language.

But wait a minute: haven’t these machines learned billions of words and sentences? Why do they need physical scribes like us?

First, the internet is finite. And so is the sum of all the words on every page of every book ever written. So what happens when the last pamphlet, papyrus, and prolegomenon is digitized and the model still isn’t perfect? What happens when there are no more words?

The date for the end of language has already been determined. Much has been written about the world-changing potential of large-scale language models (LLMs), including Midjourney and Open AI’s GPT-4. These models are trained on massive amounts of data, generating everything from academic papers, fake news, and “revenge porn.” Music, images, software code.

While supporters praise the technology for speeding up scientific research and eliminating routine administrative tasks, it also presents a wide range of workers, from accountants, lawyers, and teachers to graphic designers, actors, writers, and musicians, with an existential crisis.

As the debate rages, artists like Dobie are beginning to use these very tools to explore the possibilities and precarity of technology itself.

“The technology itself is spreading at a faster rate than the law can keep up with, which creates ethical grey areas,” says Dobie, who uses celebrity internet culture to explore questions of technology and power.

Despite its peculiar nature, the shadow work trend is actually a modern interpretation of a concept introduced by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung in the mid-20th century.


Jung, a colleague of Sigmund Freud, shared Freud’s belief in the significance of the unconscious mind in human psychology. One of Jung’s theories about the unconscious posits that everyone has a “shadow” self – a part of us comprised of characteristics we fear or dislike. He referred to it as the “shadow” to signify its dark and undesirable nature that we can’t escape.

Jung suggested that our shadow self is revealed when we speak or act thoughtlessly, and it can also manifest in our dreams.

The purpose of shadow work is to delve deeper into understanding your shadow self, learn from it, and integrate it into your being. By doing so, you can feel more authentic and whole as your shadow is a genuine part of who you are. Jung argued that the shadow possesses valuable attributes like raw power and insight, which can enhance creativity, personal understanding, and resilience when expressed.

Shadow work involves introspective exercises to connect with your shadow. For instance, Shaheen recommends spending time in a quiet, dimly lit space, listening to your inner voice, and reflecting on the words that come to mind.

Visualization exercises are also common in shadow work, such as imagining two doors leading to your ideal self and your shadow self, and envisioning the experience of walking through each door.

While some therapists appreciate the increased interest in self-reflection, others are concerned that the portrayal of shadow work on social media lacks depth and may not fully capture Jungian psychology. Additionally, for individuals with traumatic backgrounds, reflective practices may trigger distressing emotions best addressed in a therapeutic setting.

For skeptics, Jung’s theory, like Freud’s, lacks empirical evidence and may potentially harm individuals by attributing distressing thoughts to a supposed part of themselves.

Embracing the Noise: How I Unplugged and Reconnected with the World

Whether it was a two-minute walk to the store or a two-hour commute where I could hear nothing but my own thoughts and the hustle and bustle of the city, it was enough to send me into a mild state of frenzy.

This obsessive relationship with headphones began earlier this year when a friend of mine, an ambient artist, Lance Laoyen noted that headphones not only disconnect us from the reality of noise pollution, but also continue to distract us under the guise of improving our focus. This conversation sent me into a bit of a spiral of thought that I am prone to fall into, and made me keenly aware of the ubiquity of headphones in our culture and how little attention we pay to them.
