The first randomized controlled trial investigating the timing of cancer immunotherapy has revealed that administering treatment earlier in the day may significantly enhance patient survival rates.

Human cells and tissues operate on a 24-hour cycle, known as the circadian rhythm, influencing various bodily functions including mood, metabolism, and immune response.

Numerous observational studies have indicated that cancer patients receiving checkpoint inhibitors (a class of immunotherapy drugs that empower the immune system to combat cancer) earlier in the day show a lower risk of disease progression and mortality.

Recently, Francis Levy and his team at the University of Paris-Saclay, France, conducted the first randomized controlled trial focused on chronotherapy—timing treatments based on circadian rhythms—utilizing both chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

In this study, 210 patients diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer were given four doses of either pembrolizumab or sintilimab, two checkpoint inhibitors that function similarly.

Every three weeks, half of the participants received their doses before 3 p.m., while the others received treatments later. All patients also received chemotherapy immediately after each immunotherapy session. Chemotherapy targets rapidly dividing cells and is believed to have a lesser connection to circadian rhythms than immunotherapy.

This timing was strictly adhered to during the initial four cycles of the combined immunochemotherapy treatments. Following this period, all participants continued receiving the same medications until their tumors advanced or no longer responded, but without specific timing guidelines. Previous research suggests that the first four cycles are crucial, as noted by team member Zhang Yongchang from Central South University, China.

Participants were monitored for an average of 29 months post-initial treatment. Results showed that those treated before 3 p.m. had a median survival of 28 months, compared to 17 months for those treated later in the day. “The results are dramatically positive,” Levy stated. “Survival time nearly doubles.”

“When we compare our findings to significant trials that resulted in new drug approvals, such large effects are rarely observed,” noted Pasquale Innominato from the University of Warwick, UK. He emphasized that the study demonstrates a definitive link between treatment timing and survival outcomes, deeming it solid evidence of causation.

This dramatic improvement may be attributed to T cells, a type of immune cell targeted by checkpoint inhibitors, which tend to accumulate near tumors in the morning and gradually enter the bloodstream later. Administering immunotherapy earlier could position T cells closer to tumors, enabling more effective destruction, according to Levy.

Levy also emphasized the need for further studies to explore if more precise timing, such as 11 a.m., offers additional advantages compared to broader scheduled treatments. Innominato pointed out that having flexibility in timing is advantageous for busy healthcare facilities.

Further investigation is necessary to determine whether managing the timing of chemoimmunotherapy beyond the first four cycles yields greater benefits, Levy mentioned. Individual variability could also play a critical role; for example, a morning person may have different immune responses compared to a night owl.

Whether these findings apply to various cancer types remains an open question. Innominato anticipates similar results in other tumors commonly treated with immunotherapy, like skin or bladder cancers, but tempered his expectations for tumors such as prostate or pancreatic cancers that often resist treatments.

It is often said that timing plays a crucial role, and cancer treatment might be no exception. Researchers have discovered that adjusting the timing of immunotherapy drugs administered to cancer patients can enhance survival rates, adding to the evidence that our body’s internal clock affects cancer treatment efficacy.

The activities of cells and tissues within our bodies follow a 24-hour cycle termed the circadian rhythm, which governs everything from hormone release to cell division and repair timing. These rhythms are frequently disrupted in cancer cells, which tend to divide uncontrollably rather than at set intervals.

This has led to efforts aimed at alleviating chemotherapy side effects by targeting quickly dividing cells while the healthy tissue is less active. However, researchers are also exploring whether administering cancer drugs at particular times can enhance their efficacy.

One class of drugs under scrutiny is immune checkpoint inhibitors, which enable immune T cells to more effectively identify and target tumors. “T cells and other immune agents are naturally more active in the morning, making them more responsive,” explains Dr. Celine Ismail Sutton at Easbeatty Gwynedd Hospital in Bangor, England, who was not part of the study. “Administering immune checkpoint inhibitors during this window may bolster antitumor effects and enhance effectiveness.”

Earlier this year, ze fan and colleagues from Central South University in Changsha, China, documented that giving the checkpoint inhibitor pembrolizumab before 11:30 a.m. alongside chemotherapy to patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) resulted in a survival rate that nearly doubles compared to those receiving treatment primarily in the afternoon.

To assess whether timing treatments in accordance with circadian rhythms, termed chronotherapy, could benefit patients with rapidly dividing, aggressive small cell lung cancer, the same team analyzed data from 397 individuals treated with the checkpoint inhibitors atezolizumab or durvalumab alongside chemotherapy from 2019 to 2023.

“Patients treated before 3 p.m. exhibited significantly longer progression-free survival and overall survival in comparison to those treated later in the day,” reported team members. Zhang Yongchang, also at Central South University, noted.

After accounting for numerous confounding variables, early treatment appeared to be associated with a 52% reduced risk of cancer progression and a 63% decreased risk of mortality.

Zhang suspects that this effect may manifest in additional tumor types, referencing evidence from studies on renal cell carcinoma and melanoma. Research on NSCLC trials illustrated that morning dosing boosts circulating T cell levels and activation, while later dosing does the opposite. Mouse studies have shown that the behavior of tumor-infiltrating T cells fluctuates throughout the 24-hour cycle and that circadian clocks in adjacent endothelial cells influence when immune cells migrate into tumors.

While larger randomized controlled trials are essential, this investigation “adds further support to a growing number of studies globally that indicate improved outcomes when immunotherapy drugs are administered earlier in the day,” states Pasquale Innominato from the University of Warwick, UK.

But is it feasible for hospitals to implement this? When it comes to modifying treatment schedules, “adjusting infusion times is a straightforward clinical decision that incurs minimal costs,” asserts Zhang.

Nevertheless, treating everyone early in the day isn’t practical. According to Robert Dalman, also at the University of Warwick, each person’s body clock varies. “For instance, the biological time discrepancy between an ‘early bird’ and a ‘night owl’ can span several hours.”

Nonetheless, biomarkers that accurately assess individuals’ chronotypes are currently in development. Once established and validated, chronotherapy could emerge as a “cost-effective, resource-efficient innovation with the capability to significantly enhance treatment outcomes. A simple shift in timing can unveil a new facet of precision medicine,” concludes Ismail Sutton in a recently published perspective on this innovative strategy.

Ultrasound Could Enhance Stroke Survival by Clearing Brain Debris

Recent research suggests that pulsed ultrasound waves directed at the brain may enhance survival rates following a specific stroke type by promoting the removal of inflammatory dead blood cells, based on findings from a study involving mice. This technique, which boosts lymphatic drainage efficiency, could also have applications for treating Alzheimer’s disease, with clinical trials anticipated to commence next year.

Hemorrhagic stroke, constitutes around 15% of all strokes and occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, leading to bleeding, disrupting oxygen supply to the brain, and causing cellular damage, which can result in motor and cognitive issues.

Treatments typically involve sealing the ruptured blood vessel with small metal clips and extracting dead red blood cells via a catheter or similar device. Neglecting this procedure can exacerbate inflammation and lead to further tissue damage. However, this method is highly invasive, posing risks of brain damage and infections, as noted by Larg Airan at Stanford University, California.

After an unexpected experience with prolonged ultrasound application during drug activation in mouse brains, Aylan considered whether pulsed ultrasound could be effective in removing the “debris” from the brain. “When I observed the drug’s effects, it appeared to spread throughout the brain, almost as if it were being ‘painted’ over,” he recounted.

To probe this idea, the research team simulated a hemorrhagic stroke by injecting mice with blood from their tails. For three consecutive days, they administered pulsed ultrasound to the skulls of half the mice for 10 minutes each day, while the others received no treatment.

Subsequently, all mice underwent a three-minute test in a water tank divided into four corners, with healthy mice typically turning in either direction 50% of the time. The team discovered that mice treated with ultrasound turned left 39% of the time, compared to 27% for the control group. Additionally, treated mice exhibited stronger grips on a metal bar than their untreated counterparts, indicating they suffered less brain damage, a conclusion that was later substantiated through brain slice analyses conducted post-euthanasia.

One week following the blood injection, around half of the control group mice perished, compared to only one-fifth of the ultrasound-treated group. A rapid increase in survival rates was noted, with an approximately 30 percentage point improvement achieved through just three 10-minute ultrasound treatments, according to Airan.

Further insights revealed that the ultrasound pulses triggered pressure-sensitive proteins in microglia, the brain’s immune cells, reducing their inflammation and enhancing their ability to clear dead red blood cells. Additionally, this technique improved the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, facilitating the removal of dead cells to lymph nodes in the neck, which are part of the lymphatic system responsible for eliminating metabolic waste.

While more investigations are necessary, this method might also have the potential to address various brain disorders. “If ultrasound can efficiently remove larger red blood cells from the brain, it stands to reason it could also eliminate smaller toxic proteins, such as the misfolded tau associated with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases,” Aylan explained.

Experts are impressed with this promising research due to its non-invasive nature. Kathleen Caron from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill noted that the lymphatic systems in mice and humans show considerable similarities, indicating this approach could be applicable in human cases as well.

The use of ultrasonic irradiation is considered safe, and while research is ongoing to confirm these findings, Aylan is optimistic about the lack of unforeseen side effects from this treatment.

Ultimately, the research team aspires to test this technique on individuals suffering from hemorrhagic strokes that necessitate urgent intervention. They aim to gather additional data on its safety and efficacy for Alzheimer’s patients, with trials projected to begin next year, according to Aylan.

New mRNA Vaccine May Enhance Immune Response and Aid Cancer Survival

The mRNA COVID-19 vaccination seems to offer an unexpected advantage: it may extend the lives of cancer patients by enhancing immunotherapy effectiveness.

A study analyzing about 1,000 individuals undergoing treatment for advanced skin and lung cancer revealed that those who received an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine within 100 days of starting treatment with an immune checkpoint inhibitor had nearly double the survival time compared to those who did not receive the vaccine during this period. Clinical trials to validate these findings are set to commence by year-end.

“The outcomes were astonishing,” states Elias Sayur, a researcher at the University of Florida. They speculate about the potential to develop an mRNA vaccine that enhances this immune response. “Could we craft a universal mRNA vaccine that activates the immune system across all cancer patients?” he muses. “The possibilities are extensive.”

However, is it advisable for someone just commencing checkpoint inhibitors to get a COVID-19 vaccine to improve treatment efficacy? “I am hesitant to provide clinical recommendations without concrete proof,” Sayur cautions. “Attempting to harness your immune system against cancer also carries risks,” he adds, urging adherence to established vaccine guidelines.

The rationale behind this finding lies in the immune system’s capacity to eliminate many cancers even before they escalate. Yet, some tumors evolve to obstruct this response. They achieve this by manipulating the “off switch” of T cells, which are responsible for destroying cancer cells. A well-known off switch is the protein PD-1 found on T cell surfaces.

PD-1 becomes inactive when it binds to a protein called PD-L1 on certain cell surfaces. This serves as a safety mechanism for cells to signal, “cease the attack, I am benign.”

Numerous cancers hijack PD-L1 by producing it in excessive amounts. Checkpoint inhibitors function by preventing PD-1 and other off switches from becoming activated. These treatments have significantly increased survival rates for conditions like lung cancer and melanoma, earning a Nobel Prize for their developers in 2018.

However, the efficacy of checkpoint inhibitors varies significantly. When an individual’s immune system fails to react to the tumor by dispatching T cells for an attack, these drugs offer limited benefit.

Consequently, combining checkpoint inhibitors with vaccines that bolster the immune system’s tumor combat capabilities could prove to be more effective than either strategy used in isolation. Cancer vaccines are generally tailored to elicit a response to mutated proteins in cancer cells and are often personalized. “We are attempting to discern the unique aspects of their tumors,” Sayur explains. “It demands substantial time, funding, and complexity.”

During cancer vaccine trials, his team observed that the non-specific mRNA vaccine used as a control also exhibited remarkable effectiveness. “It was an absolute surprise,” Sayur remarks.

In July, Sayur and colleagues published findings indicating that mRNA vaccines enhance anti-tumor responses, even when not aimed at cancer-specific proteins, as revealed in studies in mice. Vaccines can initiate an innate immune response that acts like an alarm, energizing the immune system and prompting T cells to move from tumors to lymph nodes, where they rally other immune cells for a focused attack.

Recognizing this potential, Sayur and his team examined the medical records of patients treated at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Out of 884 advanced lung cancer patients receiving checkpoint inhibitors, 180 had received mRNA COVID-19 vaccinations within 100 days of initiating treatment. Those vaccinated survived for approximately 37 months, contrasting with roughly 20 months for those unvaccinated.

Furthermore, among 210 individuals with melanoma that had metastasized, 43 had been vaccinated within 100 days of starting checkpoint inhibitors. They had a survival time of around 30 to 40 months, compared to around 27 months for individuals who were not vaccinated in that time frame. Some vaccinated individuals remained alive at the time of analysis, indicating their survival may extend even longer. The research findings were shared at the European Society of Medical Oncology Congress in Berlin, Germany.

Previous reports have suggested that after receiving an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, a proportion of tumors exhibited shrinkage, indicating potential anti-tumor effects in certain cases even without checkpoint inhibitors. “It’s certainly a possibility, but further investigations are essential to fully understand,” comments Sayur.

The United States recently declared significant cuts in funding for mRNA vaccine development, despite the substantial benefits they have provided during the pandemic and the vast potential they hold for treatments beyond vaccines.

The narrative unfolds slowly through a familiar mix of audio logs, chaotic elements, and signs of harsh environments, often depicted with bloodstains on the walls.

Unfortunately, this intriguing premise cannot uphold the weight of Chronos’ series of baffling missteps. Instead of cultivating a sense of claustrophobic dread, it opts for overwhelming, frantic impulses, sparking a need for creative expressions of frustration.

The superb sound design effectively instills a sense of waiting in the dark, plagued by hunger. The problems arise when you confront the monsters. One of the initial foes ambushes you in a tight space, and you’re downed in mere hits. Your only defense is a weak weapon and an aim that seems to flail in every direction, making you realize how to cheese your way through until you meet your demise—only to repeat the cycle. This maddening dance persists throughout the entire 14-hour journey.

This complaint is somewhat alleviated when ample ammunition and health-restoring items are provided, creating a semblance of having narrowly escaped death. However, you’re often thrust into battles with overwhelming monsters armed for combat, with limited health and resources, leaving no viable strategy. Attempts to introduce challenges devolve into frustrating designs riddled with issues.

The inventory system doesn’t help matters; even the most dedicated survival horror fans will find themselves sacrificing precious bullets to carry keycards to progress or waste time moving between storage points to retrieve items. This doesn’t build tension; instead, it fosters tedious tasks.

Denisovan DNA Might Have Aided Ancient Survival in the Americas

Thousands of years ago, ancient Homo sapiens embarked on a perilous journey, traversing the icy expanses of the Bering Straits into the uncharted territories of the Americas. Recent research indicates that these migrants may have brought with them an extraordinary gift – MUC19 genes inherited from Denisovans, which could have played a pivotal role in helping humans adapt to the challenges of their new environments.

The modern human genome harbors a few archaic variants that are the remnants of past interbreeding events with Neanderthals and Denisovans.

While many of these variants are neutral, certain archaic mutations found in modern humans are believed to be targets of positive natural selection, possibly essential for human adaptation as they expanded into new lands.

The populations in the Americas encountered diverse environments, creating numerous opportunities for natural selection to favor archaic variations in these new settings.

This new research, spearheaded by a team from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Brown University, focused on a gene known as MUC19, which aids in the production of proteins that form saliva and mucosal barriers in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts.

The researchers found that a Denisovan variant of MUC19 exists in the DNA of modern Latin Americans with Indigenous American ancestry, as well as in individuals excavated from archaeological sites across North and South America.

The prevalence of this gene in modern human populations suggests it was under significant natural selection, indicating that it conferred survival or reproductive advantages to those who carried it.

Although the specific benefits remain unclear, given the gene’s involvement in immune processes, it may have provided an enhanced defense against pathogens encountered by early settlers in the Americas.

“From an evolutionary perspective, this discovery illustrates how ancient interbreeding can produce effects that persist today,” stated Professor Emilia Fuerta Sanchez of Brown University.

“Biologically, it identifies genes that seem to be adaptable, though their precise functions are yet to be elucidated.”

“We hope this will spur further research into the actual roles of this gene.”

Limited information exists about Denisovans, who inhabited Asia between 300,000 and 30,000 years ago, with our knowledge primarily derived from small fossils found in Denisova Cave, two jawbones discovered in Tibet and Taiwan, and an almost complete skull unearthed in China this year.

Fossils from Siberian fingers contained ancient DNA, facilitating the search for genetic similarities between Denisovans and modern humans.

Previous studies have indicated that the Denisovan-derived gene EPAS1 may have contributed to the remarkable adaptations of Sherpas and other Tibetans.

In the current study, researchers compared Denisovan DNA with the most recent genomes obtained from the 1,000 Genomes Project, a global study on genetic variations.

They found that Denisovan-derived MUC19 variants are prevalent among Latino populations with Indigenous American ancestry.

The researchers also investigated DNA from 23 individuals excavated from archaeological sites in Alaska, California, Mexico, and other parts of the Americas, finding that Denisovan-derived variants were also common in these ancient peoples.

The authors conducted several independent statistical tests demonstrating that Denisovan MUC19 genetic mutations have reached unusually high frequencies in both ancient indigenous populations and present-day indigenous peoples, indicating genes that are situated on long stretches of archaic DNA.

They also revealed that the gene likely crossed over from Denisovans to another archaic population.

“These findings reveal that past interbreeding has introduced new and potentially advantageous genetic variations into human lineages,” Professor Fuerta Sanchez remarked.

“New genetic variations typically arise through slow evolutionary processes.”

“However, these interbreeding events were a sudden means of introducing a plethora of new variations.”

“In this instance, the novel genetic reservoir seems to have aided modern humans migrating to the Americas and may have bolstered their immune systems.”

“Clearly, this gene was advantageous for these populations.”

“We hope that recognizing the significance of these genes will inspire new investigations into their functions to uncover fresh biological mechanisms, particularly relating to coding genetic variants that modify protein sequences.”

Stay Safe at Home

John Rammy, founder of The Prevent, a Survivalist Company, advises against investing in a bunker. “Instead of focusing on bunkers,” he explains,

“we should concentrate on reinforcing our current homes and communities. It’s essential that your doors can withstand multiple kicks. Your home is your fortress, providing a secure space during emergencies.”

He encourages contemplating how long one could stay inside their home. “If I had to lock myself in right now, how long could I last?” he asks.

“The initial goal should be a two-week supply, covering most emergencies like natural disasters. Some go further and prepare to last for six months. Personally, I am prepared to survive indefinitely, as I can grow food, find water, and purify it.”

Essential Supplies

As frightening as it sounds, being unprepared means being vulnerable. According to Ramey, stocking up on essential gear is crucial. “Consider Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: food, water, health, and communication,” he notes.

“First aid supplies are essential. Have sanitary products available—can you clean yourself properly? Water storage is vital. Generally, aim for one gallon of water per day.

“In the long run, do you know how to collect and store water? Make sure you have purification systems like filters or UV purifiers to ensure you can drink safely from natural sources.”

It’s also crucial to have a “bugout bag,” a pack of essential supplies ready for quick evacuation. Cameron Carlson, a survival expert and member of the Zombie Research Association, suggests the following items:

“Waterproof matches, an emergency blanket, a sleeping bag, freeze-dried food, a flashlight, batteries, a solar radio, a water purifier, a camping stove, a knife, a firearm, and a medical kit.”

“A useful tip is to include steel wool and a 9-volt battery. Touching the battery to the steel wool can ignite it, and steel wool is compact and lightweight.”

Ramey also recommends bicycles. “The bicycle is the ultimate bug-out vehicle,” he states. “It’s the most efficient human-powered machine ever made.

“Whenever experts watch The Walking Dead, one common complaint is that after eight years, people are still relying on gasoline vehicles. Gasoline tends to expire in six months. Though additives can extend its life, finding usable gasoline within a year can be challenging.”

Essential Skills

Having supplies is of no use if you lack the skills to utilize them effectively.

“Core skills include first aid and understanding how to treat injuries,” Ramey explains.

“Consider characters like Daryl from The Walking Dead. If he suffered an injury from a crossbow bolt, would you know how to assist? Modern society is advanced, yet we’ve lost centuries of survival skills over just a single century.”

“Many of our grandparents possessed at least rudimentary knowledge of treating wounds. Even standard first aid courses typically assume you can call for help—there’s often an expectation for emergency services to arrive promptly.”

Outdoor survival skills are equally vital. “Additionally,” Ramey adds, “many people no longer know how to navigate without technology. There’s a phenomenon known as ‘death by GPS.’ So, do you know how to read a map? Can you start a fire? Can you build a shelter for winter?

“Less obvious yet essential skills include conflict resolution and situational awareness. Are you aware of your surroundings? Do you know how to defuse a tense situation without resorting to violence?”

Where to Seek Refuge

There may come a time when you need to leave your home in search of safety. But where should you head?

If you’re in New York or London during a zombie apocalypse, you might want to head to the countryside, away from the crowds, Rammy suggests. “Yet even in such a scenario, isolation may become undesirable, as community becomes essential.”

“Community cooperation generally proves more beneficial than the stereotype of the lone wolf wandering off into the sunset with a shotgun slung over their shoulder.”

The prevailing belief that humanity will descend into chaos after an apocalyptic event is challenged by Michał Zalewski, author of A Practical Ending: A User’s Guide to the End of the World, who argues against this notion.

“Most individuals will likely suffer in silence rather than harming innocents,” he asserts. “The real danger during times of uncertainty is the tendency to react against ‘outgroups.’ However, in a zombie scenario, we have a defined enemy.

“And as we slow down, we are not machines. We need rest and recuperation. It’s impossible to master every necessary survival skill against every potential disaster.”

Dealing with Zombies

What about the zombies themselves? According to zombie aficionado Cameron Carlson, it all hinges on their nature—whether they’re fast and rabid (think 28 Days Later) or sluggish (like in The Walking Dead).

“If they are fast, there’s no outrunning them,” he admits. “Stealth becomes imperative, enabling you to maneuver away from their line of sight. If faced with fast-moving zombies, tactics are essential.”

“Against slower zombies, your main task is evasion.”

Carlson also suggests utilizing dogs for their acute sense of smell, which is superior to ours. Dogs serve as excellent early warning systems. If your dog starts acting oddly—growling, showing teeth, or restlessly pacing—it’s a signal that something’s wrong.

Interestingly, a significant contrast exists between the UK’s and the US’s gun ownership cultures. How might this affect survival outcomes in a zombie apocalypse?

“It has its pros and cons,” Rammy states. “In cases where zombies are approaching, having a shotgun could be your last line of defense. In that sense, American gun culture provides certain advantages.

“However, it also means that in a society breaking down, many people will be armed. We’ve witnessed over the past two years that even during milder emergencies, a significant portion of the population can become erratic and difficult to manage. So, it’s a double-edged sword.”

Survival Kids Shows Nintendo Switch 2 is More than Just a Mario Kart Game | Games

tOne intriguing aspect of the console launch is the element of surprise in the first batch of games. Who could have guessed that the standout title for PlayStation would be Fireworks Simulation (Fantavision), or that the most entertaining offering in the inaugural GameCube lineup would involve racing with gigantic, transparent gloves (Super Monkey Balls)?

The most recent addition to this mix is Konami’s Survival Kids, the sole new third-party title in the Switch 2 Opening Wave. This latest entry in the cult series of Tropical Island Survival Sims by the publisher originates from Game Boy Color and was revised for the Nintendo DS under a new moniker, despite not achieving widespread international success. Players, in groups of up to four, find themselves marooned on a mystical archipelago, requiring them to gather resources, craft tools, locate food, and explore vibrant cartoon landscapes. While four players can join online, the game also supports game sharing on Switch 2, allowing one owner to connect wirelessly with others and play together.

Andrew Dennison, the head of game developer Unity, considers this feature to be one of the key highlights of Switch 2. “With Splitscreen, a single console renders two different game views,” he explains. “With GameShare, one view can be compressed and streamed. It renders everything three times and transmits it to the other consoles. As long as you understand the specifications of the technology, the advantages of GameShare are enjoyable. You don’t have to own the game to play.”

In contrast to survival games like Don’t Starve or Project Zomboid (or even Lost in Blue), Survival Kids does not impose lethal consequences. All tools are organized in Basecamp rather than menus, allowing easy access to essentials.

Much like Overcooked, Survival Kids emphasizes streamlined cooperation and well-split tasks. It’s quicker for two individuals to chop wood and break rocks, thus establishing a labor team. Meanwhile, a culinary expert is essential for gathering plants and preparing food, which fuels the energy required for climbing cliffs and transporting heavy items. “We’ve put a lot of effort into enhancing our customer experience,” remarks Richard Jones, creative director at Konami Digital Entertainment. “This is how Basecamp functions as a communal spot. It’s essentially a shared kitchen.”

Unlike many contemporary survival sims, Survival Kids is not entirely open-ended. The objective is to explore multiple islands, providing a sense of an escape room. Players can also revisit levels for extra attempts. Despite its family-friendly appearance, the game features intriguing, challenging physics-based puzzles with various solutions. Additionally, it maintains a playful tone and humor. This is likely due to the fact that many developers at Dennison and Unity’s Stratford-Upon-Avon office previously came from Codemasters and Rare.

Will Konami bring more classic titles to Switch 2? “I know there are other Konami teams that are keen on this platform, and we can support them,” says Jones. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed for at least two more projects from Konami.” For now, Survival Kids appears to be an excellent pilot for family game sharing on the new console.

In Their Last Moments, the Pompeii Family Battled for Survival.

In 1979, Pompeii faced an attack. The eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius released clouds of ash and rock into the air, showering an ancient Roman trading hub and resort with a relentless downpour of small volcanic debris.

Many residents scrambled to escape, desperately searching for safety and their loved ones before the estimated 1,500 victims were buried under layers of volcanic material.

A recent study published in a journal Scabbi di Pompeii documents this tragic event. Scientists recorded the experience of a family in one of the homes as they took refuge in a back room, desperately trying to bar the door with a wooden bed against the onslaught of volcanic debris known as Rapili.

The small, intricately designed house, referred to as the home of Hell and Flix, featured beautifully adorned frescoes in the dining area. It chillingly depicts the mythical siblings Phullissus and Helle, who fled from their evil stepmother, with Helle tragically falling into the sea below.

Like many residences of that era, the atrium was centrally located with an open roof, serving for ventilation and rainwater collection. Unfortunately, this feature also allowed volcanic debris to enter more readily. Most residents exclaimed, “I had no idea what was happening,” says Gabriel Zuchtliegel, the study’s author and director of the Archaeological Park at Pompeii. “Many believed the end of the world was upon them,” he added.

In the years that followed, the intense ash that filled the home solidified, allowing archaeologists to create plaster casts to replicate the shape of the wooden bed that had been pressed against the door. This technique powerfully illustrates the tragic final moments of Pompeians and how everyday items made from wood, fabric, and leather deteriorated in the environment.

Four skeletal remains, believed to be from the same family, were identified in the study. Rapili, which reached heights up to nine feet in places, was overwhelming. Researchers believe the individuals made desperate attempts to escape, barricading themselves inside a small room but ultimately reaching only the Triclinium, the formal dining space where the bodies were discovered.

Dr. Zuchtliegel noted, “The family in the home of Hell and Flix likely perished when the so-called detrital flow—a torrent of hot ash and toxic gases—struck, causing parts of the building to collapse.”

He and his colleagues propose that the four individuals found in the house may have included enslaved persons who worked there. However, it remains uncertain whether they resided there or fled after the homeowners had escaped.

“It is not guaranteed that the individuals found are family members,” said Marcello Mogetta, an associate professor of Roman Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri, who was not involved in the research.

Among the skeletal remains was a bronze bull, likely belonging to a child. Ancient amulets were found around the necks of young boys, intended to ward off danger until they reached adulthood.

“There’s a tragic irony in that the talismans were meant to protect them,” remarked Caitie Barrett, a professor of archaeology at Cornell University, who was not involved in the research.

In the 18th century, Bourbon explorers sent by Charles III conducted rudimentary excavations at Pompeii, which impeded the discovery of skeletal remains in the homes of Hell and Frixus. They left gaping holes in the walls as they tunneled through the residence searching for treasures like jewels and artworks, showing little concern for the preservation of human remains or their cultural significance.

Today, however, it is the human tragedy that captivates many archaeologists and the visitors flocking to Pompeii. Whether the bodies found belong to family members remains a question researchers hope to answer through DNA analysis in the near future.

Regardless of their familial ties, the personal tragedy of this event is undeniable.

“No matter the nature of their relationships, they would have been the last to offer each other comfort,” Dr. Barrett noted.

The survival strategies of ancient amphibians during the Permian mass extinction elucidated by new study

The Permian mass extinction is the most severe biological crisis in the last 540 million years, eliminating more than 90% of marine species and 75% of terrestrial species.

Dr. Aamir Mehmoud, a researcher at the University of Bristol, said:

“These were predatory animals that ate fish and other prey, but were primarily water-related, just like modern amphibians such as frogs and salamanders.”

“We know that the weather was hot, especially after the extinction event. Why were these water-loving animals so successful?”

The early Triassic period was an era of repeated volcanic activity that led to global warming, motivation, reduced atmospheric oxygen, acid rain, and long stages of widespread wildfires, creating such hostile conditions that the tropics lacked animal life.

This “tropical dead zone” dramatically affected the distribution of both marine and terrestrial organisms.

Dr. Suresh Singh of the University of Bristol said:

“We measured the size and characteristics of the skull and teeth that tell us about their function.”

“To our surprise, we discovered that they weren’t much different due to the crisis,” said Dr. Armin Elssler of the University of Bristol.

“The Temnospondils exhibited the same range of body sizes as the Permian, some of them were small, insect-eating, and others were bigger.”

“These large forms included animals in long snoo trapping fish and generalist feeders covered in vast nudes.”

“However, what’s unusual is that their body size and functional diversity expanded about five million years after the crisis and then returned.”

There is evidence that due to severe global warming in the first 5 million years of the Triassic, life on land and on seas has left the tropical region to avoid fever.

“Our work shows that Temnospondil was able to cross the tropical dead zone unexpectedly,” said Professor Mike Benton of the University of Bristol.

“The fossils are known from South Africa and Australia in the south, North America, Europe, and Siberia in the north.”

“Temnospondyls must have been able to cross the tropical zones during the cool episode.”

“Their explosion of success in the early Triassic period was not tracked,” Dr. Amir said.

“They dealt with hot conditions, perhaps because they could eat most prey animals and perhaps because they had a low food need by hiding in sparse waters.”

“However, when dinosaurs and mammalian ancestors began to diversify in the mid-Triassic period, Temnospondil began to undergo a long decline.”

Atomfall: A survival game inspired by classic British science fiction | Games

tHis year was 1962 and you just woke up in the shadows of the Cumbria Front Scale (now Seller Field) nuclear power plant five years after a devastating meltdown. They are trapped in a considerable isolation zone surrounding the accident scene, so they must remain alive long enough to understand how to escape. Review: Grunn – A Unique Blend of Gardening Sim and Survival Horror Thriller Game

ILooks like it’s going to be a fun vacation. A week spent tending to the absentee landlord’s garden in a remote village in the Netherlands. Birds chirping in the trees, a picturesque church just across the path. But there’s something wrong with designer Tom van den Boogaart’s surreal and quietly creepy puzzle game. All the tools are missing and the villagers are strange and have been warned not to go out at night. Survival of Endangered Frogs Boosted by Winter Sauna Treatment for Fungal Disease

One of Australia’s most endangered amphibians can fight off a deadly fungal infection with the help of a naturally heated shelter that researchers are calling a “frog sauna.”

The disease, chytridiomycosis, has wiped out about 100 species of frogs, toads and salamanders worldwide.

Green and gold bell frog (Litoria aureaThe fungus was once widespread along the south-eastern coast of Australia, but its range has shrunk by 90 percent, and although other factors such as habitat loss are also at play, chytrid is thought to be the greatest threat to the endangered species.

It has long been known that warm temperatures suppress fungal infections, and many frog species, including the Japanese bush frog, are susceptible to the disease in winter when it’s hard for them to stay warm, especially when it’s hard to find a warm place.

To learn more, Anthony Waddle The researcher, from Macquarie University in Sydney, and his colleagues studied two groups of captive frogs that were intentionally infected with chytridiomycosis over the winter.

The first group was provided with bricks with holes in them in an unshaded greenhouse shelter where temperatures rose to nearly 40°C (104°F), while the second group was provided with bricks in a shaded greenhouse shelter where temperatures rose to 35°C (95°F).

Frogs that were given warmer shelter had 100 times fewer chytrid spores on their skin than other groups.

Although chytrid has difficulty growing above 28°C (82°F), warmer temperatures appear to activate the frogs’ immune systems, Waddle said.

“Using shelter to survive is like a vaccination for the frogs,” Waddle says, “and we’ve shown that firefly frogs can develop resistance after heat has cleared their infection, potentially making them 22 times more likely to survive future infections in cold environments.”

Although the researchers have only tested the shelter on one species at this stage, they believe the technology could be used with other animals threatened by chytrid fungus, as long as they seek out natural warmth when it’s cold. Waddle says there are at least six Australian animal species that could benefit from the technology.

Importantly, these thermal shelters are easy and inexpensive to set up: “All you need is a small vegetable greenhouse from the hardware store and a few bricks, and it will only cost about $60-70. [Australian] “It will cost a few hundred dollars to build,” Waddle said, “and I can envision people putting them in their backyards to help the frogs through the winter.”
