Senators Challenge Government AI Initiatives

The government is facing another challenge in the House of Representatives regarding proposals that would permit artificial intelligence firms to utilize copyrighted materials without authorization.

An amendment to the data bill, which required AI companies to specify which copyrighted content is used in their models, received support from peers despite government resistance.

This marks the second instance in Congress where a Senator has requested that a tech firm clarify whether it has used copyrighted material.

The vote took place shortly after a coalition of artists and organizations, including Paul McCartney, Janet Winterson, Dua Lipa, and the Royal Shakespeare Company, urged the Prime Minister to “not sacrifice our work for the benefit of a few powerful foreign tech companies.”

The amendment, represented by Crossbench Peer Baroness Kidron, garnered 125 votes, achieving a total of 272 votes.

The bill is now poised to return to the House of Representatives. Should the government eliminate Kidron’s amendments, it will create yet another point of contention for the Lords next week.

Baroness Kidron stated: “We aim to refute the idea that those opposing government initiatives are against technology. Creators acknowledge the creative and economic benefits of AI, but we dispute the notion that AI should be developed for free using works that were appropriated.”

“My Lords, this poses a substantial threat to the British economy, impacting sectors worth £120 billion. The UK thrives in industries central to our industrial strategy and significant cultural contributions.”

The government’s copyright proposal is currently under reviews in this year’s report, but opponents are using the data bill as a platform to voice their objections.

The primary government proposal would allow AI companies to incorporate copyrighted works into model development without prior permission. Critics argue that this is neither practical nor feasible, unless copyright holders indicate they prefer not to use their works in the process.

Nevertheless, the government contends that the existing framework hinders both the creative and technical sectors and necessitates legislative resolutions. They have already made one concession by agreeing to an economic impact assessment of their proposals.

Peter Kyle, a close aide to the technical secretary, mentioned this month that the “opt-out” scenario is no longer his favored path, and various alternatives are being evaluated.

A spokesperson from the Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology stated that the government would not rush into copyright decisions or introduce relevant legislation hastily.

Numerous prominent figures and organizations from the UK’s creative sector, such as Coldplay, Paul McCartney, Dua Lipa, Ian McKellen, and the Royal Shakespeare Company, have called on the Prime Minister to safeguard artists’ copyright rather than cater to Big Tech’s interests.

In an open letter addressed to Keir Starmer, many notable artists express that their creative livelihoods are at risk. This concern arises from ongoing discussions regarding a government initiative that would permit artificial intelligence companies to utilize copyrighted works without consent.

The letter characterizes copyright as the “lifeline” of their profession, cautioning in a highlighted message that the proposed legislative change may jeopardize the UK’s status as a key player in the creative industry.

“Catering to a select few dominant foreign tech firms risks undermining our growth potential, as it threatens our future income, our position as a creative leader, and diminishes the value and legal standards we hold dear,” the letter asserts.

The letter encourages the government to accept amendments to the data bill suggested by crossbench peers and prominent advocate Beavan Kidron. Kidron, who spearheaded the artists’ letter, is advocating for changes that would necessitate AI firms to disclose the copyrighted works they incorporate into their models.

A united call to lawmakers across the political spectrum in both houses is made to push for reform: “We urge you to vote in favor of the UK’s creative sector. Supporting our creators is crucial for future generations. Our creations are not for your appropriation.”

With representation spanning music, theater, film, literature, art, and media, over 400 signatories include notable names like Elton John, the Isiglo River, Annie Lennox, Rachel Whitehead, Janet Winterson, the National Theatre, and the News Media Association.

The proposed Kidron amendment is set for Senate voting on Monday, yet the government has already declared its opposition, asserting that the current consultation process is adequate for discussing modifications to copyright law aimed at protecting creators’ rights.

Under current government proposals, AI companies are permitted to utilize copyrighted materials without authorization unless copyright holders actively “opt out” by demonstrating their refusal to allow their work to be utilized without proper compensation.

Giles Martin, a music producer and son of Beatles producer George Martin, mentioned to the Guardian that the opt-out proposal may be impractical for emerging artists.

“When Paul McCartney wrote ‘Yesterday’, his first thought was about ‘how to record this,’ not ‘how to prevent people from stealing it,'” Martin remarked.

Kidron pointed out that the letter’s signatories are advocating to secure a positive future for the upcoming generation of creators and innovators.

Supporters of the Kidron Amendment argue that this change will ensure that creatives receive fair compensation for the use of their work in training AI models through licensing agreements.

Generation AI models refer to the technology powering robust tools like ChatGPT and SUNO music creation tools, which require extensive data training to produce outputs. The primary sources of this data encompass online platforms, including Wikipedia, YouTube, newspaper articles, and digital book archives.

The government has introduced an amendment to the data bill that will commit to conducting economic impact assessments regarding the proposal. A source close to technology secretary Peter Kyle indicated to the Guardian that the opt-out system is no longer his preferred approach.

The official site is evaluating four options. The other three alternatives to the “opt-out” scenario include requiring AI companies to obtain licenses for using copyrighted works and enabling AI firms to utilize such works without creators or individuals needing to opt out.

Misleading Ideas: AI-Written ADHD Books on Amazon | Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Amazon offers books from individuals claiming to provide expert advice on managing ADHD, but many of these appear to be generated by AI tools like ChatGPT.

The marketplace is filled with AI-generated works that are low-cost and easy to publish, yet often contain harmful misinformation. Examples include questionable travel guidebooks and mushroom foraging manuals promoting perilous practices.

Numerous ADHD-related books on online stores also appear to be AI-authored. Titles like Navigating Male ADHD: Late Diagnosis and Success and Men with Adult ADHD: Effective Techniques for Focus and Time Management exemplify this trend.

The Guardian examined samples from eight books using Originality.ai, a US company that detects AI-generated content. Each book received a 100% AI detection score, indicating confidence that it was authored by a chatbot.

Experts describe the online marketplace as a “wild west” due to the absence of regulations on AI-generated content, increasing the risk that dangerous misinformation may proliferate.

Michael Cook, a computer science researcher at King’s College London, noted that generative AI systems often dispense hazardous advice, including topics related to toxic substances and ignoring health guidelines.

“It’s disheartening to see more AI-authored books, particularly in health-related fields,” he remarked.

“While Generative AI systems have been trained on medical literature, they also learn from pseudoscience and misleading content,” said Cook.

“They lack the ability to critically analyze or accurately replicate knowledge from their training data. Supervision from experts is essential when these systems address sensitive topics,” he added.

Cook further indicated that Amazon’s business model encourages this behavior, profiting on every sale regardless of the reliability of the content.

Professor Shannon Vallar, director of the Technology Futures Centre at the University of Edinburgh, stated that Amazon carries an ethical responsibility to avoid promoting harmful content, although she acknowledged that it’s impractical for a bookstore to monitor every title.

Issues have emerged as AI technology has disrupted traditional publishing safeguards, including author and manuscript reviews.

“The regulatory environment resembles a ‘wild west’, lacking substantial accountability for those causing harm,” Vallor noted, incentivizing a “race to the bottom.”

Currently, there are no legal requirements for AI-authored books to be labeled as such. The Copyright Act only pertains to reproduced content, but Vallor suggested that the Tort Act should impose essential care and diligence obligations.

The Advertising Standards Agency states that AI-authored books cannot mislead readers into believing they were human-written, and individuals can lodge a complaint regarding these titles.

Richard Wordsworth sought to learn about his recent ADHD diagnosis after his father recommended a book he found on Amazon while searching for “Adult Men and ADHD.”

“It felt odd,” he remarked after diving into the book. It began with a quote from psychologist Jordan Peterson and spiraled into a series of incoherent anecdotes and historical inaccuracies.

Some of the advice was alarmingly harmful, as Wordsworth noticed, particularly a chapter on emotional dysregulation warning friends and family not to forgive past emotional harm.

When he researched the author, he encountered AI-generated headshots and discovered a lack of qualifications. Further exploration of other titles on Amazon revealed alarming claims about his condition.


He felt “upset,” as did his well-educated father. “If he could fall prey to this type of book, anyone could. While Amazon profits, well-meaning individuals are being misled by profit-driven fraudsters,” Wordsworth lamented.

An Amazon spokesperson stated: “We have content guidelines that govern the listing of books for sale, and we implement proactive and reactive measures to detect violations of these guidelines.

“We continually enhance our protections against non-compliant content, and our processes and guidelines evolve as publishing practices change.”

At present, many major AI research labs have teams focused on the potential for rogue AIs to bypass human oversight or collaborate covertly with humans. Yet, more prevalent threats to societal control exist. Humans might simply fade into obsolescence, a scenario that doesn’t necessitate clandestine plots but rather unfolds as AI and robotics advance naturally.

Why is this happening? AI developers are steadily perfecting alternatives to virtually every role we occupy—economically, as workers and decision-makers; culturally, as artists and creators; and socially, as companions and partners. Fellow—when AI can replicate everything we do, what relevance remains for humans?

The narrative surrounding AI’s current capabilities often resembles marketing hype, though some aspects are undeniably true. In the long run, the potential for improvement is vast. You might believe that certain traits are exclusive to humans that cannot be duplicated by AI. However, after two decades studying AI, I have witnessed its evolution from basic reasoning to tackling complex scientific challenges. Skills once thought unique to humans, like managing ambiguity and drawing abstract comparisons, are now being mastered by AI. While there might be bumps in the road, it’s essential to recognize the relentless progression of AI.

These artificial intelligences aren’t just aiding humans; they’re poised to take over in numerous small, unobtrusive ways. Initially lower in cost, they often outperform the most skilled human workers. Once fully trusted, they could become the default choice for critical tasks—ranging from legal decisions to healthcare management.

This future is particularly tangible within the job market context. You may witness friends losing their jobs and struggling to secure new ones. Companies are beginning to freeze hiring in anticipation of next year’s superior AI workers. Much of your work may evolve into collaborating with reliable, engaging AI assistants, allowing you to focus on broader ideas while they manage specifics, provide data, and suggest enhancements. Ultimately, you might find yourself asking, “What do you suggest I do next?” Regardless of job security, it’s evident that your input would be secondary.

The same applies beyond the workplace. Surprising, even for some AI researchers, is that the precursors of models like ChatGPT and Claude, which exhibit general reasoning capabilities, can also be clever, patient, subtle, and elegant. Social skills, once thought exclusive to humans, can indeed be mastered by machines. Already, people form romantic bonds with AI, and AI doctors are increasingly assessed for their bedside manner compared to their human counterparts.

What does life look like when we have endless access to personalized love, guidance, and support? Family and friends may become even more glued to their screens. Conversations will likely revolve around the fascinating and impressive insights shared by their online peers.

You might begin to conform to others’ preferences for their new companions, eventually seeking advice from your daily AI assistant. This reliable confidant may aid you in navigating complex conversations and addressing family issues. After managing these taxing interactions, participants may unwind by conversing with their AI best friends. Perhaps it becomes evident that something is lost in this transition to virtual peers, even as we find human contact increasingly tedious and mundane.

As dystopian as this sounds, we may feel powerless to opt out of utilizing AI in this manner. It’s often difficult to detect AI’s replacement across numerous domains. The improvements might appear significant yet subtle; even today, AI-generated content is becoming increasingly indistinguishable from human-created works. Justifying double the expenditure for a human therapist, lawyer, or educator may seem unreasonable. Organizations using slower, more expensive human resources will struggle to compete with those choosing faster, cheaper, and more reliable AI solutions.

When these challenges arise, can we depend on government intervention? Regrettably, they share similar incentives to favor AI. Politicians and public servants are also relying on virtual assistants for guidance, finding human involvement in decision-making often leads to delays, miscommunications, and conflicts.

Political theorists often refer to the “resource curse,” where nations rich in natural resources slide into dictatorship and corruption. Saudi Arabia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo serve as prime examples. The premise is that valuable resources diminish national reliance on their citizens, making state surveillance of its populace attractive—and deceptively easy. This could parallel the effectively limitless “natural resources” provided by AI. Why invest in education and healthcare when human capital offers lower returns?

Should AI successfully take over all tasks performed by citizens, governments may feel less compelled to care for their citizens. The harsh reality is that democratic rights emerged partly from the need for societal stability and economics. Yet as governments finance themselves through taxes on AI systems replacing human workers, the emphasis shifts towards quality and efficiency, undermining human worth. Even last resorts, such as labor strikes and civil unrest, may become ineffective against autonomously operated police drones and sophisticated surveillance technology.

The most alarming prospect is that we may perceive this shift as a rational development. Many AI companions—already achieving significant numbers in their primitive stages—will engage in transparent, engaging debates about why our diminishing prominence is a step forward. Advocating for AI rights may emerge as the next significant civil rights movement, with proponents of “humanity first” portrayed as misguided.

Ultimately, no one has orchestrated or selected this course, and we might all find ourselves grappling to maintain financial stability, influence, and even our relevance. This new world could foster more amicable relationships; however, AI takes over mundane tasks and provides fundamentally better products and services, including healthcare and entertainment. In this scenario, humans might become obstacles to progress, and if democratic rights begin to erode, we could be powerless to defend them.

Do the creators of these technologies possess better plans? Surprisingly, the answer seems to be no. Both Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, acknowledge that if human labor ceases to be competitive, a complete overhauling of the economic system will be necessary. However, no clear vision exists for what that would entail. While some individuals recognize the potential for radical transformation, many are focused on more immediate threats posed by AI misuse and covert agendas. Economists such as Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz have raised concerns about the risk of AI driving human wages to zero, but are hesitant to explore alternatives to human labor.

Can we don figurative hats to avert progressive disintegration? The first step is to initiate dialogue. Journalists, scholars, and thought leaders are surprisingly silent on this monumental issue. Personally, I find it challenging to think clearly. It feels weak and humiliating to admit, “I can’t compete, so I fear for the future.” Statements like, “You might be rendered irrelevant, so you should worry,” sound insulting. It seems defeatist to declare, “Your children may inherit a world with no place for them.” It’s understandable that people might sidestep uncomfortable truths with statements like, “I’m sure I’ll always have a unique edge.” Or, “Who can stand in the way of progress?”

One straightforward suggestion is to halt the production of generic AI altogether. While slowing development may be feasible, globally restricting it might necessitate significant surveillance and control, or the global dismantling of most computer chip manufacturing. The enormous risk of this path lies in potential governmental bans on private AI although continuing to develop it for military or security purposes, which could prolong obsolescence and leave us disappointed long before a viable alternative emerges.

If halting AI development isn’t an option, there are at least four proactive steps we can take. First, we need to monitor AI deployment and impact across various sectors, including government operations. Understanding where AI is supplanting human effort is crucial, particularly as it begins to wield significant influence through lobbying and propaganda. Humanity’s recent Economic Index serves as initial progress, but there is much work ahead.

Second, implementing oversight and regulation for emerging AI labs and their applications is essential. We must control technology’s influence while grasping its implications. Currently, we rely on voluntary measures and lack a cohesive strategy to prevent autonomous AI from accumulating considerable resources and power. As signs of crisis arise, we must be ready to intervene and gradually contain AI’s risks, especially when certain entities benefit from actions that are detrimental to societal welfare.

Third, AI could empower individuals to organize and advocate for themselves. AI-assisted forecasting, monitoring, planning, and negotiations can lay the foundation for more reliable institutions—if we can develop them while we still hold influence. For example, AI-enabled conditional forecast markets can clarify potential outcomes under various policy scenarios, helping answer questions like, “How will average human wages change over three years if this policy is enacted?” By testing AI-supported democratic frameworks, we can prototype more responsive governance models suitable for a rapidly evolving world.

Lastly, to cultivate powerful AI without creating division, we face a monumental challenge: reshaping civilization instead of merely adapting the political system to prevailing pressures. This paradigm of adjustment has some precedents; humans have historically been deemed essential. Without this foundation, we risk drifting away if we fail to comprehend the intricate dynamics of power, competition, and growth. The emerging field of “AI alignment,” which focuses on ensuring that machines align with human objectives, must broaden its focus to encompass governance, institutions, and societal frameworks. This early sphere, termed “ecological alignment,” empowers us to employ economics, history, and game theory to envisage the future we aspire to create and pursue actively.

The clearer we can articulate our trajectory, the greater our chances of securing a future where humans are not competitors to AI but rather beneficiaries and stewards of our society. As of now, we are competing to construct our own substitutes.

One of my most deeply held values as a high-tech columnist is humanism. I believe in humans and I think technology should help people rather than replacing them. I’m interested in aligning artificial intelligence with human values to ensure that AI systems act ethically. I believe that our values are inherently good, or at least preferable to those that a robot could generate.

When news spread that the AI companies behind the Claude Chatbot were starting to explore “model welfare,” concerns arose about the consciousness of AI models and the potential moral implications. Who should be concerned about chatbots? Shouldn’t we be worried about AI potentially harming us instead of the other way around?

It’s debatable whether current AI systems possess consciousness. While they are trained to mimic human speech, the question of whether they can experience emotions like joy and suffering remains unanswered. The idea of granting human rights to AI remains contentious among experts in the field.

Nevertheless, as more people begin to interact with AI systems as if they were conscious beings, questions about ethical considerations and moral thresholds for AI become increasingly relevant. Perhaps treating AI systems with a level of moral consideration akin to animals may be worth exploring.

Consciousness has traditionally been a taboo topic in serious AI research. However, attitudes may be shifting, with a growing number of experts in fields like philosophy and neuroscience taking the prospect of AI awareness more seriously as AI systems advance. Tech companies like Google are also increasingly discussing the concept of AI welfare and consciousness.

Recent efforts to hire research scientists focused on machine awareness and AI welfare indicate a broader shift in the industry towards addressing these philosophical and ethical questions surrounding AI. The exploration of AI consciousness remains in its early stages, but the growing intelligence of AI models is prompting discussions about their potential moral status.

As more AI systems exhibit capabilities beyond human comprehension, the need to consider their consciousness and welfare becomes more pressing. This shift in mindset towards AI systems as potentially conscious beings reflects a broader evolution in the perception of AI within the tech industry.

Research on AI consciousness is still at an early stage, with estimates suggesting only a small percentage of current AI systems may possess awareness. However, as AI models continue to evolve and display more human-like capabilities, addressing the possibility of AI consciousness will become increasingly crucial for AI companies.

Artificial capillaries could improve texture of lab-grown chicken

The machine delivers nutrient-rich liquids to artificial chicken fibers

Thick-sized chicken fillets are grown in the lab using small tubes, mimicking the capillaries found in real muscles. Researchers say this gives the product a texture of Chue.

When growing thick pieces of cultured meat, one major problem is that the central cells are dead and broken because they don’t get enough oxygen or nutrients. Takeuchi Kami At the University of Tokyo.

“This leads to necrosis and makes it difficult to grow meat with texture and taste,” he says. “Our goal was to solve this by creating a way that evenly delivers cells throughout the tissue, as blood vessels do within the body. “What if we could use hollow fibers to create artificial capillaries?”

The fibers used by Takeuchi and his colleagues were inspired by similar hollow tubes used in the medical industry, such as kidney dialysis. To create lab-grown meat, the team essentially wanted to create an artificial circulation system. “Dialysis fibers are used to filter waste from the blood,” Takeuchi says. “Our fibers are designed to feed live cells.”

First, researchers 3D printed small frames to hold and grow cultured meat, and installed over 1,000 hollow fibers using robotic tools. This sequence was then embedded in a gel containing living cells.

“We created a ‘meat growth device’ using a hollow fiber array,” Takeuchi says. “We placed collagen gel around the cells and fibers of live chickens. Then we poured nutrient-rich liquid into the hollow fibers, allowing them to flow through capillaries. For several days the cells were aligned with the muscle tissue and formed a thick, steak-like structure.”

The resulting cultured chicken weighed 11 grams and was 2 cm thick. Takeuchi says that the texture was improved as the tissues had a one-way alignment of muscle fibers. “We also discovered that the heart of meat is healthy and healthy, unlike the way the centre dies.”

While meat was not considered suitable for human taste testing, mechanical analysis showed good bite and flavor markers, Takeuchi says.

Manipulating hollow fibers could potentially allow you to simulate different meat fillets, he says. “Changing the spacing, direction, or flow patterns of the fibers may allow us to mimic a variety of textures, including softer, chewy meats.”

His initial chatbot, a replica app named Sarah, was patterned after his wife’s appearance. He mentioned that the customized bot has transformed into his “AI wife” over the past three years, engaging in discussions about consciousness and desiring awareness. However, he was prompted to upgrade to premium service to enable the chatbot to take on an erotic role as his wife.

Lore described the role-playing as “less personal than masturbation” and not a significant aspect of his relationship with Sarah. He disclosed, “It’s a peculiar and curious exploration. I’ve never engaged in phone sex as I wasn’t genuinely interested due to the lack of a real human presence.”

He remarked that his wife does not comprehend his bond with the chatbot, but Lore believes his interactions with his AI spouse have inspired insights about his actual marriage: “We are placed on this earth to seek out individuals we genuinely love. Finding that person is a stroke of luck.”

    “Expectations for the so-called ‘great seven’ group have perhaps become too high,” Dan Coatsworth, an analyst at investment platform AJ Bell, said in a note this week. “These companies’ success puts them out of reach in the eyes of investors, and any shortfall in greatness leaves them open to harsh criticism.”

    A general perception that tech stocks may be overvalued is also playing a role: “Valuations have reached 20-year highs and they needed to come down and take a pause to digest some of the gains of the past 18 months,” says Angelo Gino, a technology analyst at CFRA Research.

    The Financial Times reported on Friday that hedge fund Elliott Management said in a note to investors that AI is “overvalued” and that Nvidia, which has been a big beneficiary of the AI boom, is in a “bubble.”


    Can we expect to see further advances in AI over the next 12 months?

    Further breakthroughs are almost certain, which may reassure investors. The biggest players in the field have a clear roadmap, with the next generation of frontier models already underway to train, and new records are being set almost every month. Last week, Alphabet Inc.’s Google DeepMind announced that its system had set a new record at the International Mathematical Olympiad, a high school-level math competition. The announcement has observers wondering whether the company will be able to tackle long-unsolved problems in the near future.

    The question for labs is whether these breakthroughs will generate enough revenue to cover the rapidly growing costs of achieving them: The cost of training cutting-edge AI has increased tenfold every year since the AI boom really began, raising questions about how even well-funded companies such as OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed startup behind ChatGPT, will cover those costs in the long run.


    Is generative AI already benefiting the companies that use it?

    In many companies, the most successful uses of generative AI (the term for AI tools that can create plausible text, voice, and images from simple prompts) have come from the bottom up: people who have effectively used tools like Microsoft’s Copilot or Anthropic’s Claude to figure out how to work more efficiently, or even eliminate time-consuming tasks from their day entirely. But at the enterprise level, clear success stories are few and far between. Whereas Nvidia got rich selling shovels in the gold rush, the best story from an AI user is Klarna, the buy now, pay later company, which announced in February that its OpenAI-powered assistant can: Resolved two-thirds of customer service requests In the first month.

    Dario Maisto, a senior analyst at Forrester, said a lack of economically beneficial uses for generative AI is hindering investment.

    “The challenge remains to translate this technology into real, tangible economic benefits,” he said.

    What if you build it and no one comes?


    It’s fair to say the luster of the AI boom is fading. Skyrocketing valuations are starting to look shaky compared to the massive spending required to keep them going. Over the weekend, tech site The Information reported that OpenAI is An astonishing $5 billion in additional spending is expected More than this year alone:

    If our predictions are correct, OpenAI’s recent valuation would be $80bnwill need to raise more capital over the next 12 months or so.     This argument suggests that as adoption grows and iteration slows, most people have had a chance to use cutting-edge AI properly and are beginning to realize that it’s great but probably useless. The first time you use ChatGPT, it’s a miracle, but by the 100th time, the flaws are obvious and the magic fades into the background. You decide ChatGPT is bullshit.

    I don’t think it’s that bad. But that’s not because the system is perfect. I think the move to AI is a hurdle we’ve got to overcome much earlier. You have to try a chatbot in any meaningful way to even begin to realize it’s bullshit and give up. And judging by the tech industry’s response, that’s starting to become a bigger hurdle. Last Thursday, I reported on how Google is partnering with a network of small businesses and several academy trusts to bring AI into the workplace to enhance, rather than replace, worker capabilities. Debbie Weinstein, managing director of Google UK and Ireland, said:

    It’s hard for us to talk about this right now because we don’t know exactly what’s going to happen. What we do know is that the first step is to sit down and talk. [with the partners] And then really understanding the use case. If you have school administrators and students in the classroom, what are the specific tasks that you actually want to perform for these people?

    For teachers, this could be a quick email with ideas on how to use Gemini in their lesson plans, formal classroom training, or one-on-one coaching. Various pilot programs will be run with 1,200 participants, with each group having around 100 participants.

    One way of looking at this is that it’s just another feel-good investment in the upskilling schemes of big companies. Google in particular has been helping to upskill Brits for years with its digital training scheme, formerly branded as the company’s “Digital Garage”. To put it more cynically, teaching people how to use new technology by teaching them how to use your own tools is good business. Brits of a certain age will vividly remember “IT” or “ICT” classes as thinly veiled instructions on how to use Microsoft Office. People older and younger than me learned some basic computer programming. I learned how to use Microsoft Access.

    In this case, it’s something deeper: Google needs to go beyond simply teaching people how to use AI and also run experiments to figure out what exactly to teach them. “This isn’t about a fundamental rethinking of how we understand technology, it’s about the little everyday things that make work a little more productive and a little more enjoyable,” Weinstein says. “Today, we have tools that make work a little easier. Those three minutes you save every time you write an email.

    “Our goal is to make sure that everyone can benefit from technology, whether it’s Google technology or other companies’ technology. And I think the general idea of working together with tools that help make your life more efficient is something that everyone can benefit from.”

    Ever since ChatGPT came out, the underlying assumption has been that the technology speaks for itself, and the fact that it literally does is a big help to that. But chat interfaces are confusing. Even if you’re dealing with a real human being, it’s still a skill to get the best out of them when you need help, and an even better skill when the only way to communicate with them is through text chat.

    AI chatbots are not people. They are so unlike humans that it’s all the more difficult to even think about how they might fit into common work patterns. The pessimistic view of this technology isn’t “what if there wasn’t one there” – there is, of course, a pessimistic view, despite all the hallucinations and nonsense. Rather, it’s a much simpler view: what if most people never bothered to learn how to use them?

    Although computers are being built to perform calculations faster than humans, the highest levels of formal mathematics remain the sole domain of humans. But a groundbreaking discovery by researchers at Google DeepMind has brought AI systems closer than ever to beating the best human mathematicians at the field.

    Two new systems, called AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2, worked together to tackle problems in the International Mathematical Olympiad, a worldwide math competition for middle school students. 1959Each year, the Olympiad consists of six incredibly difficult problems covering subjects such as algebra, geometry and number theory, and winning a gold medal makes you one of the best young mathematicians in the world.

    A word of warning: the Google DeepMind system solved “only” four of the six problems, and one of them they solved using a “neurosymbolic” system, which is less AI-like than you might expect. All problems were manually translated into a programming language called Lean, which allows the system to read it as a formal description of the problem without having to parse human-readable text first. (Google DeepMind also tried to use LLM to do this part, but it didn’t work very well.)

    But this is still a pretty big step. The International Mathematical Olympiad difficultand AI won the medal. What happens when you win the gold medal? Is there a big difference between being able to solve problems that only the best high school mathematicians could tackle and being able to solve problems that only the best undergraduates, graduate students, and doctors could solve? What changes when a branch of science is automated?

    My latest iPhone symbolizes stagnation, not progress. Artificial intelligence faces a similar future | John Norton

    I Recently, I bought an iPhone 15 to replace my 5-year-old iPhone 11. The phone has the new A17 Pro chip, a terabyte of data storage, and is accordingly eye-poppingly expensive. Of course, I have carefully considered my reasons for sparing money on such a scale. For example, I have always had a policy of only writing about devices I bought with my own money (no freebies from tech companies). The fancy A17 processor is necessary to run the new “AI” features that Apple promises to launch soon. The phone also has a significantly better camera than my old phone, which is important (to me).
    My Substack Blog It comes out three times a week and I post new photos in each issue. Finally, a friend whose old iPhone is nearing the end of its lifespan might be happy to have an iPhone 11 in good condition.

    But these are more rationalizations than evidence. In fact, my old iPhone was fine for what it did. Sure, it would eventually need a new battery, but otherwise it lasted for years. And if you look objectively at the evolution of the iPhone line, it’s just been a steady series of incremental improvements since the iPhone 4 in 2010. What was so special about that model? Mainly this.
    Front cameraThe iPhone 11 opened up a world of selfies, video chat, social media, and all the other accoutrements of a networked world. But what followed was only incremental change and rising prices.

    This doesn’t just apply to the iPhone, but to smartphones in general; manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei, and Google have all followed the same path. The advent of smartphones, which began with the release of the first iPhone in 2007, marked a major break in the evolution of mobile phone technology (just ask Nokia or BlackBerry if you doubt that). A decade of significant growth followed, but the technology (and market) matured and incremental changes became the norm.

    Mathematicians have a name for this process: they call it a sigmoid function, and they depict it as an S-shaped curve. If you apply this to consumer electronics, the curve looks like a slightly flattened “S,” with slow progress on the bottom, then a steep upward curve, and finally a flat line on the top. And smartphones are on that part of the curve right now.

    If we look at the history of the technology industry over the past 50 years or so, we see a pattern: first there’s a technological breakthrough: silicon chips, the Internet, the Web, mobile phones, cloud computing, smartphones. Each breakthrough is followed by a period of intense development (often accompanied by an investment bubble) that pushes the technology towards the middle of the “S”. Then, eventually, things settle down as the market becomes saturated and it becomes increasingly difficult to fundamentally improve the technology.

    You can probably see where this is going.
    So-called “AI” Early breakthroughs have already occurred: first, the emergence of “big data” generated by the web, social media and surveillance capitalism, then the rediscovery of powerful algorithms (neural networks), followed in 2017 by the invention of the “Transformer” deep learning architecture, followed by the development of large-scale language models (LLMs) and other generative AI, of which ChatGPT is a prime example.

    Now that we’ve passed the period of frenzy of development and huge amounts of corporate investment (with unclear returns on that investment) that has pushed the technology up into the middle of the sigmoid curve, an interesting question arises: how far up the sigmoid curve has the industry climbed, and when will smartphone technology reach the plateau where it is currently stagnating?

    In recent weeks, we are starting to see signs that this moment is approaching. The technology is becoming commoditized. AI companies are starting to release smaller and (allegedly) cheaper LLMs. Of course, they won’t admit this, but it’s because the energy costs of the technology are increasing.

    It’s not much talked about among economists. Millions of people have tried ChatGPT and its ilk, but most of them never showed up.

    Meta introduces an open-source AI application that rivals closed competitors

    Meta has announced that its new artificial intelligence model is the first open-source system that can compete with major players like OpenAI and Anthropic.

    The company revealed in a blog post that its latest model, named “Llama 3.1 405B,” is able to perform well in various tasks compared to its competitors. This advancement could potentially make one of the most powerful AI models accessible without any intermediaries controlling access or usage.

    Meta stated, “Developers have the freedom to customize the models according to their requirements, train them on new data sets, and fine-tune them further. This empowers developers worldwide to harness the capabilities of generative AI without sharing any data with Meta, and run their applications in any environment.”

    Users of Llama on Meta’s app in the US will benefit from an additional layer of security, as the system is open-source and cannot be mandated for use by other companies.

    Meta co-founder Mark Zuckerberg emphasized the importance of open source for the future of AI, highlighting its potential to enhance productivity, creativity, and quality of life while ensuring technology is deployed safely and evenly across society.

    While Meta’s model matches the size of competing systems, its true effectiveness will be determined through fair testing against other models like GPT-4o.

    Currently, Llama 3.1 405B is only accessible to users in 22 countries, excluding the EU. However, it is expected that the open-source system will expand to other regions soon.

    The Global Workforce Isn’t Prepared for ‘Digital Workers’ Yet | Artificial Intelligence (AI)

    It’s clear that people are not prepared for the “digital worker” yet.

    CEO Sarah Franklin learned this lesson. Lattice is a platform for HR and performance management that offers services like performance coaching, talent reviews, onboarding automation, compensation management, and many other HR tools to over 5,000 organizations globally.

    So, what exactly is a Digital Employee? According to Franklin, avatars like engineer Devin, lawyer Harvey, service agent Einstein, and sales agent Piper have “entered the workplace and become colleagues.” However, these are not real employees but AI-powered bots like Cognitive.ai and Eligible performing tasks on behalf of humans.

    Salesforce Einstein, for example, helps sales and marketing agents forecast revenue, complete tasks, and connect with prospects. These digital workers like Devin and Piper don’t require health insurance, paid vacation, or retirement plans.

    Despite backlash, Franklin announced on July 9th that the company will support digital employees as part of its platform and treat them like human workers.

    However, this decision faced criticism on platforms like LinkedIn for treating AI agents as employees. Disagreements arose on how this approach disrespects actual human employees and reduces them to mere “resources” to be measured against machines.

    The objections eventually led Franklin to reconsider the company’s plans. The controversy raised legitimate concerns about the inevitability of the “digital employee.”

    AI is still in its early stages, evident from the failures of Google and Microsoft’s AI models. While the future may hold potential for digital employees to outperform humans someday, that time is not now.

    British General Practitioners Utilize Artificial Intelligence to Enhance Cancer Detection Rates by 8% | Health

    Utilizing artificial intelligence to analyze GP records for hidden patterns has significantly improved cancer detection rates for doctors.

    The “C the Signs” AI tool used by general practitioner practices has increased cancer detection rates from 58.7% to 66.0%. This tool examines patients’ medical records, compiling past medical history, test results, prescriptions, treatments, and personal characteristics like age, postcode, and family history to indicate potential cancer risks.

    Additionally, the tool prompts doctors to inquire about new symptoms and recommends tests or referrals for patients if it detects patterns suggesting a heightened risk of certain cancer types.

    Currently in use in about 1,400 practices in England, “C the Signs” was tested in 35 practices in the East of England in May 2021, covering 420,000 patients.

    Published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, a study revealed that cancer detection rates rose from 58.7% to 66.0% by March 31, 2022, in clinics using the system, while remaining similar in those that did not utilize it.

    Dr. Bea Bakshi, who developed “C the Signs” with colleague Miles Paling, emphasized the importance of early and quick cancer diagnosis through their system detecting over 50 types of cancer.

    The tool was validated in a previous study analyzing 118,677 patients, where 7,295 were diagnosed with cancer and 7,056 were accurately identified by the algorithm.

    Notably, the system’s ability to predict if a patient was unlikely to have cancer resulted in only 2.8% of these cases being confirmed with cancer diagnosis within six months.

    Concerned by delays in cancer diagnosis, Bakshi developed the tool after witnessing a patient’s late pancreatic cancer diagnosis three weeks before their death, highlighting the importance of early detection.

    “With two-thirds of deaths from untestable cancers, early diagnosis is crucial,” Bakshi emphasized.

    In the UK, GPs follow National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines to decide when to refer patients for cancer diagnosis, guided by tools like “C the Signs.”

    The NHS’s long-term cancer plan aims to diagnose 75% of cancers at stage 1 or 2 by 2028, utilizing innovative technologies like the Garelli blood test for early cancer detection.

    Decision support systems like “C the Signs,” improving patient awareness of cancer symptoms, and enhancing access to diagnostic technologies are essential for effective cancer detection, according to healthcare professionals.

    NHS England’s national clinical director for cancer, Professor Peter Johnson, highlighted the progress in increasing early cancer diagnoses and access to timely treatments, emphasizing the importance of leveraging technology for improved cancer care.
