Rowan Hooper: Bill, when you announced your visit to the office, people reacted as if Ryan Gosling or David Beckham were arriving.

Bill Bryson: That’s just my appeal.

RH: Your book from 2003, A Short History of Almost Everything, has become one of the best-selling nonfiction titles of the 21st century, and you’ve now released a revised edition.

It’s over 20 years old, and science has evolved tremendously since then. Consider the Denisovans: back when I wrote the first edition, little was known about these ancient humans, just like Homo floresiensis – the Hobbit. Revisiting and updating this was gratifying because I reconnected with many experts I first interviewed two decades ago.

RH: One of the most rewarding aspects of being a science reporter is the privilege of speaking with leading experts and engaging them about their groundbreaking research.

For many scientists, their work often goes unnoticed, especially in fields that lack public interest. I’m here to say that their contributions are remarkable and worth discussing.

I always ask, what inspired you to enter your specific field? What was that defining moment that made you passionate about studying, say, lichens?

RH: Shifting gears, what was your own “Eureka” moment in science?

I struggled with science during my school years. Coming of age in America during the 1950s and 1960s, education focused heavily on producing future scientists, which didn’t resonate with everyone.

Yet, I believe everyone should connect with science at some level. Science is foundational—it explains our existence and guides us towards understanding our future. My aim was to engage people in this discovery, sparking curiosity without delving into complexities like equations and technical jargon.

When I first pitched this idea to publishers, they dismissed it as impractical, suggesting I leave popular science to titans like Stephen Hawking. But they eventually allowed me to proceed.

To my surprise, many people are eager to learn about science just as I am. The book’s essence revolves around the question: “How do we know what we know?” It explores the processes scientists use to uncover knowledge.

Remarkably, I found it fascinating how much we still don’t know. The unknown is as compelling as the known.

Understanding that we cannot yet quantify all the insect species on Earth highlights this point.

RH: Many species are disappearing before we’ve even identified them, directly linking to climate change, which isn’t covered in the book. What was the rationale behind that decision?

The book aims to clarify our historical understanding and the current state of knowledge. Thus, its focus leans towards the history of science.

Penny Sarche: One significant change from the initial edition to the new one is the human lifespan—previously 74.2 years, it has now extended to over 80 years. This reflects a major increase in longevity.

Originally, I emphasized that a human lifespan comprises roughly 650,000 hours. Reflecting on all the moments spent idly, like watching Coronation Street, makes me value the time we have.

PS: Did you encounter any unexpected insights while revising this book?

I was amazed to discover that we’ve identified twice as many moons in the solar system. I pondered, “How difficult can it be to keep track of moons?”


One thing I didn’t expect was that it’s actually quite interesting that there’s so much we don’t know.

In the past 20 years, the number of moons orbiting Jupiter has tripled, with most being relatively small. The definition of a moon is simply a rock that orbits a planet.

RH: Another notable change is the complexity of human family trees, now resembling a hedge rather than a straightforward line. Was that surprising? It seems almost manageable, right?

It was indeed surprising. Experts initially believed they had a solid grasp on human ancestry, but discoveries concerning the Denisovans and other ancient human groups have complicated matters.

What fascinates me is how ancient humans interacted and coexisted. Contrary to popular belief, interbreeding was common among different groups, suggesting a rich and intertwined history.

Alec Luhn: Twenty years ago, the scientific community operated in a calmer atmosphere. Currently, discussions in the U.S. suggest a war on science. Did this create pressure while writing the 2.0 edition?

The main goal of this book is to sustain the dialogue around science for another 20 years, hoping for reflection on the current climate as a temporary phase.

It would be tragic if such policies and institutionalized dissent became a long-lasting aspect of the U.S.

I was about to set off on an adventurous few hours when we encountered a moment to pause. The recent “update” stripped away features, altered the music interface, and removed my ability to track my location on the map simultaneously.

This is what usually complicates my existence in an automated world. The promise of mandatory software updates is to enhance the applications and software we rely on daily, making them more user-friendly and secure. However, in many cases, these updates completely alter the technologies we’ve come to appreciate.

I had finally adjusted to how my device functioned, but did I truly feel secure knowing that the controls could suddenly shift at any time? Sorry—it’s a whole new ball game now! What about those features I relied on frequently, like community-generated subtitles on YouTube and the option to view historical statistics? Apologies, but those have either vanished entirely or are now hidden behind a paywall. This situation breeds paranoia. I’ve found myself immersed in a Reddit thread populated with individuals convinced that the latest operating system updates are reducing their phone’s battery life significantly. Did this actually happen? Who can tell?


This is one reason I feel uneasy about “smart” appliances. While Hollywood portrayals of hackers and robot revolts aren’t particularly terrifying, I’m more concerned about disruptive updates, vanishing features, or unnecessary enhancements. I worry that anonymous developers, miles away, could make a simple change that degrades their apps and software overnight. Half of my computer’s programs are cluttered with the latest AI gimmickry. Just wait until manufacturers of household items decide they need to join in too.

Do you tolerate products that have diminished in quality over time simply because the manufacturer decided so, rather than normal wear and tear? A hammer that inexplicably removed the nail puller unless you pay for a ridiculous new subscription? Shouldn’t you also have a faucet that consistently delivers hot water, instead of being arbitrarily limited by the creator’s whims? It really shouldn’t be like that.

I’ve learned to cope without a map and a connected audio controller. Yet, I still feel the impact. Perhaps it serves as a constant reminder that living a more simplified life, detached from the relentless updates of faceless corporations, is not such a terrible fate.

Investment inflows into BTC spot ETFs continue as BTC volatility shrinks – Blockchain updates, analysis, TV, and job opportunities

The introduction of the new BTC Spot ETF has attracted funds from traditional finance to the digital asset market. The 11 spot ETFs have collectively attracted approximately $1.15 billion in cumulative inflows since inception. Leading the pack is the BlackRock Spot ETF with about $1.4 billion in assets under management (AUM), followed closely by the Fidelity Spot ETF with about $1.26 billion in assets under management.

This inflow was partially offset by the fact that one of the 11 spot ETFs launched was Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC). GBTC is not a new product; it has been traded in trust since 2015, but was converted to an ETF. The product has experienced significant outflows of approximately $2.81 billion since the conversion, with total inflows for the 11BTC Spot ETF decreasing from approximately $3.96 billion to $1.15 billion.

At the time of the conversion, GBTC held approximately 620,000 BTC, which has now decreased to approximately 552,000 BTC. The large outflow can be attributed to two main factors. First, prior to the conversion, due to the structure of the product, GBTC customers were restricted from redeeming their shares and could only sell them on the secondary market. This forced many customers to hold positions for years without an exit option unless they were willing to sell at a deep discount on the secondary market. Second, the high management fee charged by Grayscale (1.5%) compared to most of its competitors (0.2%/0.3%) has led some investors to choose between cashing out their profits or offering a more cost-effective option. I withdrew my investment from Grayscale to reinvest in a high-performing ETF.

BTC spot ETFs recorded strong activity with high trading volumes. Since their launch, the cumulative trading volume of the 11 spot ETFs has reached approximately $16.6 billion in six trading days, or an average daily trading volume of approximately $2.77 billion. As expected, GBTC recorded the highest trading volume given the large amount of BTC being stored and the dynamic activity related to the conversion of trusts into ETFs.

With the successful launch of the BTC Spot ETF, market participants and analysts are now focusing on the potential for the ETF to include a variety of digital assets. Analysts predict an Ethereum (ETH) spot ETF has a greater than 70% chance of approval this year. This expectation is reinforced by analyzing the price trend of ETH. Immediately after the approval of the BTC Spot ETF, funds were transferred from BTC to ETH. ETH rose 17% versus BTC and 11% in dollar terms during the week of approval. New AI-powered search updates, enhanced navigation interface, and more introduced by Google Maps

Google is adding a number of new updates to Maps. These include several AI-powered features designed to make it easier for users to search, explore their surroundings, and reach their destinations. The company is rolling out updates to its navigation interface that will make it easier to find specific items nearby or find inspiration for things to do, provide EV drivers with more information about chargers, and expand the features announced in 2018 to more cities and more.

The tech giant is updating its in-map search to make it easier to find specific things nearby. Searching for things like “animal latte art” will show you the photo results you’re looking for. The results you see are based on AI and advanced image recognition models analyzing the photos you share on Google Maps. By showing you these images, Google wants to make it easier for you to find new spots that have exactly what you’re looking for. In this scenario, if you find a cute animal latte art image that you like, you can click on it to see details of the coffee shop that offers that image and be directed to that cafe.

This new way to search in Maps is rolling out this week in France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and the US. Google plans to expand its service to more countries in the future.

If you have free time and aren’t sure what you’re looking for, you’ll soon see more organized search results for things near you. For example, if you’re in Tokyo and don’t know what to do, search for “things to do” and you’ll get suggestions for places like “anime,” “cherry blossoms,” and “art exhibitions.” You can tap a location to go to it or save it for later. The update is designed to help you discover activities and dining options and will roll out globally on Android and iOS in the coming weeks.

Google also announced that its Maps navigation interface will soon reflect your surroundings more accurately. For example, when you’re driving downtown, you’ll see more realistic buildings and better orient yourself. In addition to color updates on the map, you now see improved lane details when driving on highways. This is useful when you need to quickly cross multiple lanes to get to the exit. These updates will begin rolling out in the coming months in 12 countries, including the United States, Canada, France, and Germany.

US drivers will start checking to see if there are HOV lanes on their routes. And in Europe, he’s expanding Google’s AI-powered speed limit information to 20 countries. Both of these features will begin rolling out to Android, iOS, and cars with Google built-ins in the coming months.

As part of today’s announcement, Google shared that it will be expanding some of its current AI-powered features to more cities. Immersive View for Routes, which lets you preview your journey by car or on foot, is expanding to Amsterdam, Barcelona, ​​Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Paris, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Tokyo, and Venice (on Android and iOS).

Google is also bringing Lens in Maps, formerly known as Search with Live View, to more than 50 new cities, including Austin, Las Vegas, Rome, Sao Paulo, and Taipei. This feature uses AI and augmented reality to help you understand your surroundings, and when you lift your phone, you can find information about nearby ATMs, transit stations, restaurants, etc.
