Paleontologists Discover the First Distinct Species of Fish-Eating Dinosaur Spinosaurus mirabilis in Over a Century

Recently identified as Spinosaurus mirabilis, this remarkable new species thrived during the Cretaceous period, approximately 95 million years ago.

The dinosaur fossil was unearthed by University of Chicago professor Paul Sereno and his team in a remote fossil site located in Jengeb, Niger, deep within the central Sahara desert.

One of the most striking characteristics of Spinosaurus mirabilis is its large, scimitar-shaped skull, which is unprecedented within this group.

“The scimitar-shaped skull was so substantial and surprising that when we first excavated it along with some jaw fragments in November 2019, we didn’t immediately recognize it,” they explained.

“Upon returning in 2022 with an expanded team, we uncovered two additional skulls, confirming the distinctiveness of this new species.”

“Based on the surface texture and internal blood vessels, we believe the skull was once covered in a layer of skin.”

“This display likely featured vibrant colors during its lifetime, curving upward like a blade to attract attention.”

The discovery of Spinosaurus mirabilis challenges longstanding beliefs regarding the habitat and behavior of spinosaur dinosaurs.

Until this finding, most spinosaur fossils had been located in coastal sediments, leading to speculation about their fully aquatic lifestyle.

However, the new fossils from Niger are situated 500 to 1,000 kilometers away from the nearest ancient coastlines.

The researchers suggest that Spinosaurus mirabilis likely inhabited forested inland areas interspersed with rivers.

“I envision this dinosaur as a sort of ‘hell’s heron.’ With its robust legs, it could easily wade through two meters of water but likely spent the majority of its time stalking through shallow waters in search of large fish,” said Professor Sereno.

Exciting Discovery: Earth-Sized Exoplanet Found Orbiting Nearby Star

Astronomers have recently identified a new exoplanet, HD 137010b, orbiting the nearby K dwarf star HD 137010, following the detection of a single shallow transit in archived data from NASA’s Kepler Expansion K2 mission.

HD 137010 is classified as a K3.5V dwarf star located approximately 146 light-years away in the constellation Libra.

This star’s age ranges between 4.8 billion and 10 billion years, and its low magnetic activity reflects its status as an old, relatively calm star.

Commonly referenced as BD-19 4097, HIC 75398, 2MASS J15242123-1944215, or TYC 6179-1111-1, HD 137010 has an apparent magnitude of 10.1 and is recognized as one of the brightest stars hosting an Earth-sized planet in temperate orbits.

The new exoplanet, designated HD 137010b, was observed during K2 Campaign 15 when NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope monitored its parent star for about three months in 2017.

“Most Earth-sized planets discovered in the habitable zone orbit red dwarfs, which are smaller and dimmer than the Sun,” explains lead author Astronomer Alexander Venner from the University of Southern Queensland.

“Concerns arise regarding these planets losing their atmospheres due to intense radiation from their host stars, rendering them uninhabitable for known life forms.”

“However, HD 137010b’s star shares characteristics more closely aligned with the Sun, increasing the likelihood that a stable atmosphere could be retained, according to current theoretical models.”

In their study, Venner and colleagues analyzed K2 data, light curves from nearby stars, archival images, and radial velocity measurements to clarify the nature of the transit signal, which lasted roughly 10 hours.

These evaluations strongly suggest that the observed transit is astrophysical and not a result of background interference, eclipsing binaries, or solar-system debris.

Astronomers have determined that the planet’s radius is approximately 1.06 times that of Earth based on the transit depth.

Considering the transit’s duration and the star’s properties, the orbital period of HD 137010b is estimated to be around 355 days.

At its distance from the host star, HD 137010b is estimated to receive about 29% of the stellar flux that Earth obtains from the Sun, placing it near the outskirts of the star’s habitable zone.

“If HD 137010b has an atmosphere similar to that of Earth or Mars, it could experience temperatures colder than Antarctica,” noted Dr. Venner.

“However, if the atmosphere thickens, conditions could warm up sufficiently for liquid water to exist, creating a potentially viable environment for life.”

“Current astronomical instruments are unable to fully characterize this newly discovered planet, but it stands out as a primary candidate for future radial velocity tools aimed at detecting Earth-like analogs.”

“Upcoming space missions, like NASA’s Habitable World Observatory, could also provide images of HD 137010b.”

Artemis II Launch

In 2026, NASA will make its grand return to the moon.

Scheduled to launch between February and April, the Artemis II mission will test NASA’s Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft by sending four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the moon.

This marks the first crewed flight for the Artemis program, taking astronauts closer to the moon than ever in the past 50 years since the Apollo program concluded.

The mission is particularly critical, given discussions about the need for the U.S. to outpace China in lunar exploration.

A successful Artemis II flight could set the stage for Artemis III, which aims to land astronauts at the moon’s south pole, reinforcing America’s leadership in space exploration.

2026 FIFA World Cup

The highly anticipated FIFA World Cup returns this summer, marking its 23rd edition with a record 48 competitor teams.

The opening match will take place on June 11th at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, with the final scheduled for July 19th at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Over the span of a month, 104 matches will unfold, showcasing the strongest teams from around the globe.

The 16 host cities include Toronto and Vancouver in Canada, Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey in Mexico, as well as major U.S. cities like Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, and Los Angeles.

This year, there will be an additional 16 teams competing compared to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Returning are heavyweights such as Argentina (three-time champions), Brazil (five-time champions), England, Germany, France, Spain, Uruguay, and the U.S., who seek their first championship title.

Several countries will be making their World Cup debuts including Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan.

As of December, 42 teams have officially qualified, including Mexico, Canada, and several others from around the globe.

The remaining six teams will be determined by March, as they compete in playoffs.

America 250

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the United States, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

This day symbolizes America’s emergence as an independent nation, embodying vital values of liberty and equality.

Events and initiatives in honor of this milestone are already underway, with many more planned throughout the year.

On New Year’s Day, America 250, a bipartisan initiative created by Congress in 2016, will unveil floats in the Pasadena Rose Parade. The theme is “Moving Forward Together for 250 Years.”

In January 2025, President Trump signed a presidential order to plan events commemorating the anniversary, including a major celebration that transformed the Washington Monument into the “World’s Tallest Birthday Candle.”

Freedom 250 has announced the Great American State Fair on the National Mall from June 25th to July 10th, featuring exhibits from all 50 states.

“This will be an unprecedented event that you’ll never see again,” stated Trump in a video address on December 18th.

The grand celebrations will culminate in a Fourth of July National Unity Celebration on the National Mall, featuring a military flyover, remarks from President Trump, and a spectacular fireworks display.

Additionally, new Patriot Games—a four-day athletic event showcasing top high school athletes from each state—will be held.

Memorial Day parades and a UFC event at the White House are scheduled for Flag Day, which also coincides with Trump’s birthday.

From Mixtapes to Pro Junk Footy: Unveiling the Most Exciting Australian Indie Games at SXSW Sydney 2025

The undeniable truth is that SXSW Sydney, now in its third year, continues to be a hub for technology, music, and film in Austin, Australia, surrounded by brands. On Saturday, families attending a complimentary children’s concert navigated through the vibrant yellow CommBank Tour Zone, while queues formed at the enormous L’Oréal tent. Yet, just a short distance away in the gaming hall of the International Convention Center, the brand’s presence was noticeably subdued.

As the global gaming sector grapples with an ongoing recession, major studios remain cautiously distant from Australia due to the high cost of living. Even amidst a conference buzzing with brand synergy, indie developers took the spotlight. Large development teams were scarce; the majority of projects showcased were from solo creators or small partnerships. Reflective of the broader Australian gaming landscape, these indie developers were impressively ambitious.

Australia’s two standout titles in the showcase, though still feeling somewhat subdued, gained significant attention. SXSW’s Game of the Year, Mixtape, from veteran developers Beethoven and Dinosaur (who brought us the delightful psychedelic adventure The Artful Escape in 2021) and the mid-sized American publisher Annapurna Interactive, tells a humorous ’90s coming-of-age story blending Edgar Wright-type comedy with the animation style of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Set to release later this year, the game promises a nostalgic journey through the joy of youth. Imagine Devo downhill skating on a lazy afternoon with cassette tapes playing in the background. Think of headbanging to Silverchair on a road trip or sneaking booze into parties while evading cops with erratic shopping carts. My 20-minute demo left me beaming, with at least one standout joke causing a fit of laughter.

In contrast, the concept behind Pro Jank Footy emerges. Co-creators David Ashby and Tyler Roach, known from the series Danger 5, have cautiously ventured into gaming with support from film distributor Umbrella. This game offers a whimsical, arcade-style take on AFL reminiscent of SNES-era sports titles. After each goal, the losing team selects one of three comical power-ups (like attacking seagulls, oversized players, or resetting the score to zero) before the game resumes. During a live demonstration at Tumbalone Park, hosted by Aunty Donna’s Broden Kelly, who also features in the game, a small audience of families gathered, while a few brave souls took to the stage, risking embarrassment for the chance to win a scarf and seemed to enjoy themselves.

Highlights emerged even from games featuring less ambitious concepts. One standout was the dynamic shooter Hyper Primate, where you embody a monkey, armed with various makeshift wooden guns, battling other animals in pursuit of a colossal floating banana. While the game has an intentionally rough aesthetic, the movement mechanics felt incredibly refined as you zoomed through jungle arenas.

Another impressive title was a solo project called Huedini, an exhilarating top-down game where you swiftly match colors to evade and consume enemies and obstacles. Even a brief gameplay session revealed that its seemingly simple mechanics could evolve into mind-bending complexity.

The Victorian Government’s strong backing for indie developers continues to yield benefits, with several projects funded by VicScreen, including Huedini. Other notable selections from this group included Way to the Woods, a stunning adventure game where you guide a deer and fawn endowed with light powers through a verdant city, and a captivating puzzle game, Letters to Arralla, where you decipher photo-based addresses in a serene island community populated entirely by root vegetables. South Australia also showcased a robust lineup, including Pro Junk Footy and a satisfying minimalist cube-rolling puzzle game, Toya, which felt like a serene reprieve amidst a bustling exhibition floor.

Even international participations largely embraced the grassroots ethos of the showcase. While most games, except for Sony’s Ghost of Yourei, weren’t playable, the discussions garnered good attendance. Exceptional projects from small teams included A Week in the Life of a Non-Social Giraffe, a point-and-click puzzle game centered on social anxiety from the U.S., Abyss X Zero, a 3D action game akin to Zelda from Brazil, and Crescent County, a pastel-themed broom racing simulator from a UK developer.


A recurrent critique of SXSW Sydney has been its pricing, with the least expensive one-week access pass costing over $100. This year, however, the final day’s exhibition entry was free, resulting in a vibrant crowd of families and children. Highlights included party games like Cow Chess, a project by a Sydney-based duo that bore no resemblance to cows or chess and felt like a fusion of Terry Gilliam’s Worms and Super Smash Bros., and Chained Beasts, a co-op Roman gladiator game where all players are interconnected by chains.

In truth, the plethora of indie games presented made it impossible to experience them all in a single day. While SXSW Sydney might be marked by corporate branding efforts, the indie spirit undeniably thrives, particularly in the realm of video games.

Based on my observations, science documentaries often fall into two categories, akin to French and Italian cuisines. (Hear me out before you judge that comparison.) The first category employs intricate techniques for a deep experience. The second is more straightforward, allowing the content to shine naturally.

Both documentary styles can yield impressive results in their own ways. human, a five-part BBC series exploring the roots of our genus, Homo, undoubtedly fits into the latter category. It weaves together compelling stories, stunning visuals, and the charismatic presence of paleontologist Ella Al Shamahi, inviting viewers to embark on a heartfelt journey through six million years of our human history. No flashy add-ons are necessary.

The first episode delves into complex inquiries. When exactly did our species emerge? Multiple perspectives yield varying answers. Was it 300,000 years ago when humans began to exhibit features resembling ours? Was it when our skulls, according to Al Shamahi, transformed to become softer and more spherical? Or, more poetically, when we developed remarkable traits like intricate language, abstract thought, and cooperative behavior?


The series intertwines fascinating narratives, stunning visuals, and the captivating presence of Ella Al Shamahi.

It’s an engaging episode, particularly when the narrative shifts to other extinct human species. For instance, Al Shamahi’s exploration of Indonesia introduces us to Homo floresiensis, a meter-tall human uniquely adapted to life on Flores. The discovery of these “hobbits” in the Liang Bua Caves two decades ago reshaped our understanding of ancient human biology. Their small brains provide insights into tool use, with their long arms and short stature diverging from other human species.

Episode three highlights the fate of our most famous relative, the Neanderthals. As we spread into Europe and Asia, they adapted to colder climates but ultimately faced extinction.

Throughout the series, Al Shamahi showcases amazing paleontological discoveries made over recent decades (many of which you may have read about in New Scientist). For instance, rainbow feathers from birds like the red kite have garnered interest regarding their significance to Neanderthals. Meanwhile, the perikymata—a growth line in tooth enamel—affirms that H. sapiens experienced extended childhoods, leveraging our cognitive capacity.

Over just five episodes, human cannot cover every aspect of our evolutionary story. Yet, it illuminates how H. sapiens has been shaped by climate influences, the flora and fauna that provide for us, other human species, and collaborative nomadic groups that shared skills, knowledge, and DNA, allowing us to thrive and eventually build cities.

This dimension of H. sapiens portrays humanity as the ultimate survivor, capable of progression and dominance over the Earth. In contrast, human offers a more humble narrative, emphasizing our species alongside our ancient relatives.

Netflix Aims for the Stars with Exciting New NASA Collaboration

Netflix is aiming for the stars.

The streaming giant announced on Monday that it will stream a live launch to subscribers’ homes later this summer, declaring, “we can partner with NASA to bring space a little closer to home.”

This initiative further propels Netflix into the realm of live streaming content, which has already seen success. On Christmas Day, millions tuned in for live coverage of NFL games and a halftime concert featuring Beyoncé. Despite some video quality challenges, November’s boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul reached 60 million households on Netflix. The platform also ventured into talk show territory this year with “Live with John Mulaney.”

Netflix asserts, “The next giant leap for humanity might just begin with pressing play,” according to its editorial site, Tudum.

NASA+ was launched in 2023 to make space content more accessible to the public; however, much of it is already available for free on the NASA app at NASA.GOV. The space agency hopes to leverage Netflix’s extensive subscriber base of over 700 million to boost interest in space exploration.

“Viewers will soon have another option to stream rocket launches, astronaut missions, and stunning live views of Earth from the International Space Station,” the agency stated in a news release.

The aim, as per a NASA announcement, is to “immerse people in the excitement of discovery, innovation, and space exploration, no matter where they are.”

“The 1958 National Aeronautics and Space Act mandates sharing stories of space exploration with the broadest audience possible,” said Rebecca Silmons, general manager of NASA+ at the agency’s Washington D.C. headquarters. “Together, we are dedicated to inspiring a new generation—ushering in a golden age of innovation and exploration, all from the comfort of home and the convenience of a smartphone.”

Netflix is capitalizing on the growing interest in space. According to NBC News, 2025 has been a landmark year for space exploration already. In April, pop artist Katy Perry and five other celebrities embarked on a short journey into space aboard Blue Origin’s new Shepherd Rocket.

Per Tudum, NASA+ Live Feeds will be featured as part of the series on the Netflix platform, with a detailed schedule anticipated to be released as the launch date approaches.

There was a lasting hole in our knowledge of the origin of life. In particular, how simple gases react to produce organic molecules that combine carbon with nitrogen, such as proteins and enzymes, and the lives we know depend on.

“When you look at the gas people thought they were on the early planet, they don’t contain any carbon-nitrogen bonds,” says Zare. “They are gases like methane, water, ammonia, nitrogen.”

Experiments by Stanley Miller and Harold Urey In 1952, electricity revealed that water and such gases can be converted into necessary organic molecules, but the hypothesis was that electrical energy came from lightning.

However, the unlikely chance that lightning will hit high concentrations of gases into the diluted spread of the ocean or atmospheric means that many people have never been convinced that it is behind the emergence of life on Earth about 4 billion years ago.

Now, Zare and his colleagues spray water droplets into a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia and nitrogen gas, showing that external power sources can lead to the formation of organic molecules with unnecessary carbon-nitrogen bonds.

Zare says that water spray droplets produce small charges, which works. “Smaller droplets are negatively charged, while larger droplets are actively charged,” he says. This depends on what is called the Renl effect, where waterfall-like droplets collide and split, creating charge.

However, what the team discovered using high-speed cameras was that, on the other hand, a small flash of electricity, what Zare calls microlites, jumped between them, when the charged droplets were close enough.

This is like how static electricity is generated, or how lightning is accumulated in the clouds and discharged. “When water droplets come within nanometers of each other, we get an electric field, which causes a failure,” he says.

Microlite flashes carried enough energy (approximately 12 electron volts) to allow gas molecules to lose electrons and react with each other, and produced organic molecules through carbon-nitrogen bonds containing one of the components of RNA, hydrogen cyanide, amino acid glycine and uracil.

“It’s amazing that microlites can start chemistry starting with nitrogen. But the reported observations are compelling.” Veronica Vaida University of Colorado at Boulder University. “It brings a new, yet unreported role for water in the origin of life.”

This piece means it was sufficient to provide the chemicals needed to start on this planet, says Zare.

Water sprays are ubiquitous, often landing on rocks, allowing organic chemicals to accumulate in the gaps, he says. The area will then dry and moisten again. Such wet dry cycles are known to combine shorter molecules with longer molecules.

Exploring the Exciting World of Meme Coins: From Dogecoin to $Trump

tA few days before his inauguration as US president, Donald Trump made an extraordinary move. He launched Trump, a so-called meme coin that fans and speculators can buy in the hopes of gaining value. Initially, $Trump surged from a value of $75 to $75 per coin in a day, according to Crypto’s price tracking website CoinMarketCap. Two days later, it fell to about $40. Just like the next First Lady Melania Trump launched her own meme coin, $ Melania. Even the pastor at Trump’s inauguration, Lorenzo Swell, promoted the $Lorenzo edition the same afternoon, sweeping it out into a frenzy of memecoin.

So, what exactly is a meme coin? And why are everyone and their pastors suddenly involved?
Memecoin is a type of digital assets based on memes. Usually it becomes a virus online. Best known is Dogecoin, inspired by a popular meme featuring a wave dog talking in the cartoon Sands. However, Dogecoin is a bit different from the many recent memecoin masses, according to Simon Peters, Crypto analyst at trading platform Etoro. DogeCoin, released in 2013, has its own blockchain. This is a decentralized ledger technology that supports cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. The majority of other meme coins are “tokens.” In other words, it runs on an existing blockchain, so it is rarely necessary for technological development methods.

These tokens are very easy to make. There are millions. The only real purpose of most meme coins is speculation. Users create or buy in the hope that their value will rise and they can make more money very quickly.

Sounds advantageous, what is the catch?
In reality, the majority of people lose money. Most meme coins are volatile and short-lived. Peters also says they are susceptible to what is called a “pump and dump” scheme or “ragpull.” This allows creators to keep many tokens themselves, hype their projects on social media to attract other buyers, increase value, throw away all tokens, flood the market and crash prices. “Then everyone moves on to another person,” says Carol Alexander, a professor of finance at the University of Sussex. Given that the crypto market is largely unregulated, investors can hardly rely on them when something goes wrong.

There are no regulators or guardrails.
All of this hasn’t put off people, and there’s been a boom in memecoin over the past year. Alexander compares it to previous trends around the NFTS. There are several reasons for recent interest. After interacting with X’s Crypto account, AI became interested in Meme Coins, and Ayrey set up a Crypto wallet for that. Then things got weird. Inspired by the bot’s post, strangers – Irey says who doesn’t know – created a yads-themed token with pump.fun and sent it to the true device. Truth Terminal promotes the token on its account, and “all hell was unleashed,” says Ayrey. The market capitalization of the token – the total value of all tokens – shot. According to Coinmarketcap, it reached over $1.2 billion, about a month after its launch.

AI later became involved in another meme coin, Faltcoin, based on a rather relevant meme (again, Early says he doesn’t know who the creator is). Fartcoin has reached a peak market capitalization of over $2.3 billion.

So Was Irey a quids?
It’s not that simple. Through the overall experience, Ayrey introduced some of the issues with Meme Coins. He discovered that the value on paper covers a lot of what he can actually get because of the low liquidity. As soon as you sell a token, its value decreases and it will have a negative effect on others who have the token. Ultimately, he signed private contracts with several investors based on not throwing Falzcoin into the market. He admits it is interesting to have to talk to finance and tax authorities about “far liquidation.” He believes this is part of the appeal of Meme Coin fans. “The more people get mad about it, the more people are, the more people find it interesting and the more fatcoin is, the higher the fatcoin,” he says.

Who is making money?
According to Alexander, the main people who make money from crypto are institutional investors, trading companies that use strategies that are not permitted in regular stock trading. “All the big professional traders are making billions to come, and ordinary people are losing money,” she says.

And Trump?
Alexander thinks his meme coins are slightly different from many coins. It’s a potential alternative to speculation, and users buy it to show support for the President. This is similar to a “fan token” just like something produced by sports teams and athletes. The Trump Token has attracted criticism due to conflicts of interest. Among other concerns, Trump

I was captivated by Lonely Mountains: Downhill, a simplistic mountain biking game that was released in 2019. obsessed I played those tracks repeatedly until I mastered the art of braking, skidding a tire on a rock, getting stuck in a tire and being flung off, speeding down a straight path, and carefully navigating over ledges. For years, I had eagerly anticipated the release of a snow sports-themed sequel. Instead of sun, rocks, and dirt, there was now glistening snow, and bicycles were replaced with skis. It seemed unbelievable at first, but after a few initial runs on the snowy mountains, I humbly realized I had a lot to learn. I struggled with turns while applying the brakes, found myself sliding backward on hills, constantly bumped into trees, missed jumps, and tumbled across frozen lakes in confusion. The challenges in each course seemed daunting, and my first multiplayer race was a humiliating experience.

However, after a few hours of practice, I found myself gracefully carving through more challenging courses while immersing myself in the soothing sounds of snow. Achieving a seamless run down the mountain, with the wind in my ears, felt exhilarating. But when I missed a turn and ended up in a ditch, the enchantment was quickly shattered, prompting me to return to the checkpoint and start over.

This rhythm of triumph and failure still resonates with me in Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders. The minimalist soundscape, visually stunning representation of natural landscapes, and the sense of achievement from conquering a course remain as captivating as ever. While there are areas that could be improved, such as adding more customization options for the skier, the high difficulty from the start and precise controls pose challenges for new players in progressing through the mountain. Additionally, the introduction of multiplayer racing and team skiing comes with its own set of drawbacks.

Currently, the multiplayer aspect is plagued by technical issues shortly after release. When multiple players appear on screen at once, such as at the start of a race, the game experiences shaking or freezing temporarily. In a game where every millisecond counts, losing control, even momentarily, can make it unbearable to play. I encountered crashes while loading courses, got kicked out of multiplayer games, and saw other players mysteriously lose connection. While these issues may be addressed by developers in the future, for now, they remain a hindrance to the overall experience. The core problem lies in the wide variability of player skill levels.

In an 8-player race, 3 participants may swiftly descend the mountain within 3-4 minutes, while others take considerably longer. Once you cross the finish line, you can either skate aimlessly or watch lower-ranked players struggle in the same section repeatedly. This can be disheartening, especially if you happen to be the unlucky last player.

The team mode requires cooperation to navigate mountains, set checkpoints, and revive fallen players, but the concept seemed lost on the players I encountered. I found myself descending the mountain like a medic while others raced past me, eventually regrouping at base camp with players who seemed content to linger. Exciting Game on the Horizon: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 | RPG

IIn the 1990s, turn-based RPGs were unstoppable. From Pokemon to the multi-million selling PlayStation Final Fantasy game, there's never been anything cooler than using drop-down menus to defeat blocky beasts. And then the new millennium arrived. As computing power blossomed and Western games became more popular, traditional Japanese RPGs slowly but surely became obsolete.

“What Final Fantasy used to do, which was make the turn-based genre more realistic and grounded, no one is doing that anymore. That's where we want to be,” said Guillaume Broche, CEO of Sandfall Interactive and creative director of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Citing the 2007 Xbox 360 classic Lost Odyssey as the last true big-budget turn-based RPG, the former Ubisoft employee founded a studio with a mission to advance the genre.

The result is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Although the name is enigmatic, this ambitious French epic takes inspiration from France's 20th century Belle Époque and Surrealist painters. A lavishly staged adventurer's party traverses shimmering worlds in a dreamlike setting, from a Little Mermaid-esque underwater kingdom to a grand Gothic mansion.

What sets Expedition 33 apart from the pack is not just its setting and aesthetics, but its fast, fluid combat. “I played so many turn-based RPGs that I got a little burnt out,” shrugs Broche. “So we wanted to make turn-based combat feel more interactive and different, requiring skill and offering something fresh for players like me.”

Each attack requires a well-timed button press to be successful. Dodge and parry are performed in real time during enemy attacks, and if you successfully parry or dodge, your HP will be recovered and you will be able to counterattack. Jumping was introduced midway through the demo, adding more dynamism as each party member jumps out of the way of an attack.

“Aspects of Belle Époque and Art Deco are present throughout, from the costumes to the decor to the environment,” says Brochu. We wanted to push that aesthetic as deep as possible into every aspect of the game. ”

The developers are being tight-lipped about specific plot details, but the plot focuses on an expedition team with one year left to live. Every year, a mysterious painter paints a new figure on a distant tower, and people of that age disappear into ashes. Seeking answers, the group attempts to locate and kill the painter, and discovers the bodies of the previous explorers.

“The story we developed is darker in tone, writing, and characters than traditional JRPGs,” Broche says. “[Games such as] “Star Sea'' and “Octopus Traveler'' are so-called love letters that remind us of the past. We don't think of ourselves as a love letter at all. We're certainly inspired by it, but we're taking a different approach when it comes to art style, presentation, and gameplay. ”

The high fidelity and sombre tone are reminiscent of the aforementioned Lost Odyssey, an impressive feat for a game made by just 30 people. The opaque cutscenes we've been shown so far have left me scratching my head, but there's a flair and dynamism to this world that's hard to resist. If you have any interest in this genre, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a must-see.

Exciting Video Games on the Horizon in 2025: Career and Lifestyle

TIt's a long-standing joke that Bethesda's Skyrim has become so popular that it can do anything. It started with the humble Xbox 360 and expanded to the Nintendo Switch, virtual reality headsets, PS5, and even Amazon's Alexa. Over 13 years later, its sequel is still nowhere to be seen, so role-playing game veterans Obsidian are offering fans an alternative in the form of Avowed.

Considering it's derived from the somewhat staid computer RPG Pillars of Eternity, it's surprising how fun and refreshing this game is. Entering the game's colorful world of Eora, I explore dense caverns, jump across canyons and scale rock walls without breaking a sweat alongside an incredibly athletic wizard. I find myself doing it.

While Skyrim's dull color palette and clunky combat betray its 2011 origins, Avowed's kineticism and vibrancy create a sense of first-person spellcasting fun. Whether you're unleashing a burst of acid at a horde of charging skeletons or a barrage of ice missiles at an apocalyptic cult, chopping and toggling between spells is as easy as holding the trigger and pressing a button. It's as simple as that, and each attack is animated with an explosion of light and color.

“I think players will really enjoy the moment-by-moment combat experience,” said game director Carey Patel. “We wanted to take the sense of momentum and impact from more action-forward games and add the player-driven progression and choices found in our RPG roots.”

My demo is accompanied by a cynical and sarcastic companion named Kai, complete with classic dialogue choices. There’s more than just Mass Effect elements here, with the actor who voiced Garrus in BioWare’s sci-fi epic providing an equally endearing companion for Kai. “Players will see the effects of their choices play out before their eyes, even if it’s early on,” Patel says. “Later in the game, the choices you make along the way will affect which characters trust you.”

While Bethesda approaches fantasy with a furrowed brow, Obsidian opts for a more irreverent tone. The level of banter is somewhere between Guardians of the Galaxy and the 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons, with a more sour Avengers-style dialogue style than a fully established one. It may be unpleasant for those who are not. The success or failure of this will depend on your friends and their personalities.

“I’m really looking forward to our players meeting the companions we’ve created for them,” Patel says.We had a lot of fun building these characters and trying to create interesting moments between them. As you move through the world, they talk to each other, giving you time to get to know them and also give you time to watch them get to know each other.”

In many ways, what I’m looking at here is more Skyrim Zero than Diet Skyrim – less extravagant and without the dodgy aftertaste. With elements of Uncharted and Mass Effect, it’s a refreshing and hilarious take on a familiar fantasy setting.

Exciting Upcoming Games of 2025: Mark Your Calendars for Date Everything!

LLots of great stuff, date them all! It started as a joke. Envisioning a game in which a lonely remote worker starts chatting to furniture, Final Fantasy voice actors Ray Chase and Robbie Daymond immediately fell in love with the concept. What would happen if it really happened? It was A game where you can date literally anything?

A bizarre game of banging home appliances that boasts over 70,000 lines of dialogue and 100 dateable inanimate objects has become a reality. Working with Team 17 and fellow voice actress and producer Amanda Hufford, they brought their ridiculous concept to life, resulting in a game they describe as wholesome, frivolous, and fun.

You may be wondering how this works. Now, when players don Dateviators (VR glasses that turn inanimate household objects into talkable, dateable beings), inanimate furniture and appliances suddenly become very chatty, and within seconds I'm talking about a dishwasher and Start flirting.

“We knew we wanted to make sure it felt wholesome, that it was sexy, but in no way vulgar,” says Robbie Daymond. “Our mantra is that we want to create something that people won't feel embarrassed about if they come in. We're playing around with that.”

From tables and microwaves to fireplaces and televisions, there are “characters” you can write dates on, and each potential lover is brought to life by a different voice actor. Every appliance is decidedly and endearingly weird, from a surprisingly liberating microwave that makes you think you're fighting an interdimensional war to a gushing frat-boy fireplace dubbed “The Art of the Pick-Up Line.” is.

They're also taking a different approach to paying actors fairly. “One of the superpowers we have is that we know a lot of people in the industry,” Daymond says. “We have a good relationship with [actors union] SAG and we were able to work out a deal that would give back the balance to the actors who worked on it. Thanks to a combination of clever scripting by TV writer Logan Burdick and great voice acting throughout, even my short demo gives me the following endearing freedom to see what happens next. I felt I had to meet a new appliance.

Although it sounds like a product of the pandemic, the premise of Date Everything was actually born in 2018 when Draymond wondered if anyone could empathize with the boredom and social deprivation of remote work. . “I’m really excited that something so surreal exists,” Burdick reflects. “I think it’s unbelievable that everyone got a chance.”

“I was a little skeptical when I started working with the team,” exclaims Jack, the game's quiet programmer. “But I was really impressed when I actually played it and saw how much care and attention was put into each character. Review of Grand Theft Hamlet: Shakespeare’s Performance in the Game is Riveting and Exciting

a Great idea, brilliantly executed. Hilarious, surreal, and, yes, really exciting in a weird way. This could be the Marat/Sade of the 21st century. During lockdown, two out-of-work actors, Sam Crane and Marc Oosterveen, played Grand Theft Auto (GTA) online (remotely to each other), and the entire movie It is shown as an in-game action feature in GTA. Their avatars navigate the vast, intricately detailed cityscape of Los Santos, similar to Los Angeles, where the action takes place, while avoiding being shot, mutilated, and mauled in the usual GTA fashion. While running through the area, they happened to come across a deserted group of people. Vinewood Bowl Amphitheater. So they staged an in-game production of Hamlet there, recruiting other gamers to play the roles, donning various bizarre costumes, handles, and personas, and using virtual reality in a zero-gravity, near-realistic way. I thought it might be possible to move around the space., the avatar’s lips move almost in sync as they speak their lines into a microphone.

They audition for all comers. In this noisy business, strange people appear who tend to use flamethrowers and rocket launchers to destroy others for no reason during the explanation of their works. Coincidentally, they don’t stick to the Vinewood Bowl stage, instead boldly expanding their reach throughout the city. Crane and Oosterveen, along with Pinny Grylls (who co-directed with Crane), explore the game’s never-ending, dark violence, how close it is to the violence of Shakespeare’s world, and how depressed they are by the stagnation of lockdown. I look back in fascination. It provides a new dreamlike insight into Hamlet’s melancholy.

The result is something like Baz Luhrmann’s gangbanger Romeo + Juliet or Tom Stoppard’s play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, in which actors roam the land performing a show. It’s so wild that you wonder if anyone is watching it. It’s really funny and sweet when Crane, Oosterveen, and Grylls start arguing among themselves in the quirky GTA setting. (Maybe they were just making a little fuss about these “real” crises, but that doesn’t matter.)

To me, Oosterveen’s bemused voice sounds a lot like Simon Jones as Arthur Dent in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and it’s no surprise that Douglas Adams would have loved this movie. I say this as a compliment. It certainly was.

The neutron star in X-ray binary system 4U 1820-30 rotates 716 times per second, the fastest rate ever observed, according to an analysis of data collected by NASA’s Neutron Star Internal Composition Explorer (NICER). It is one of the rotating celestial bodies. 2017 and 2022.

4U 1820-30 It is located approximately 26,000 light years from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius.

This X-ray binary star system is part of a metal-rich globular cluster called NGC6624.

It consists of two stars: a neutron star and a white dwarf companion. The latter orbits a neutron star every 11 minutes, making it the star system with the shortest known orbital period.

The 4U 1820-30 typically displays short bursts of X-rays that last only 10 to 15 seconds. This is likely due to the ignited helium-rich fuel burning out quickly on the surface.

“Due to its strong gravity, the neutron star pulls matter away from its companion star,” said Dr. Gaurava Jaisawal of DTU Space and colleagues.

“When enough material accumulates on the surface, a violent thermonuclear explosion occurs on the neutron star, similar to an atomic bomb.”

Astronomers observed 4U 1820-30 using NASA’s NICER X-ray telescope mounted outside the International Space Station.

This was one of the bursts that exhibited symptoms known as “thermonuclear burst oscillations,” which occur at a frequency of 716 Hz.

These bursts of oscillations match the rotational frequency of the neutron star itself, meaning it is rotating around its axis at a record speed of 716 times per second.

“During the burst, the neutron star becomes up to 100,000 times brighter than the Sun and releases an enormous amount of energy,” said DTU space researcher Dr. Jerome Cheneves.

“We are therefore working on very extreme events, and studying them will provide new insights into the existing life cycles of binary star systems and the formation of elements in the universe.”

It can get repetitive at times, Cygnus's innovative mechanics will no doubt be polarizing among the genre's most dedicated and old-school fans, but for those who approach it with an open mind and deft fingers, it remains a thrilling vision.

Gamescom Announces Exciting Updates: Indiana Jones, Civilization VII, Dune MMO, and More!

Today marks the first day of Gamescom, the Cologne trade show that is currently the biggest event on the video game calendar. This year, I wasn't among the 300,000 or so spectators that flocked to Germany, but I did watch the two-hour livestreamed Opening Night broadcast yesterday. But don't worry if you didn't: here we bring you all the most interesting news, organized by theme, because we're tired of writing simple lists of games and trailers.

Frustrating news Xbox The biggest fanboy
A new trailer for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, a new first-person adventure from Bethesda and MachineGames, has been released. In it, long-time video game actor Troy Baker looks charmingly excited about playing Indiana Jones. The game will be released on Xbox and PC on December 9th, but it was also announced that it will be released on PlayStation 5 in spring 2025. A debut game from a nervous developer
Glowmade's multiplayer Rick and Morty-style cartoonish gameshow coliseum game, King of Meat, lets players create fearsome gauntlets that other players can challenge, much like a cartoonish Takeshi's Castle, and there was also Lynked: Banner of the Spark, a new cooperative action-adventure game that reminds me a bit of Hi-Fi Rush, from the new studio FuzzyBot, in which you kill evil robots and rescue cute ones to fuse with your arm for fighting powers.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has been shown off again ahead of its October launch, revealing one entire level of its single-player campaign, an overwhelmingly silly Cold War action-adventure. (Your character's analog camera is treated with the dignity of a gun, right down to the elaborate reload animations.) Techland is adding a new zombie game to its Dying Light series, The Beast, promising another 20 hours of open-world undead parkour action. There'll be even more zombies to shoot in the upcoming eight-player co-op survival game No More Room in Hell 2. Billed as “the coziest open-world game ever,” Infinity Nikki seems like a completely baffling game, featuring pink-haired anime girls and a bunch of weird, cute singing creatures that look like adorable Noah's Ark. I'm not sure what to make of it.

And the upcoming Dune MMO, Dune: Awakening, in which hundreds of players explore the desert planet Arrakis and compete for abandoned technology and spice resources, drew a big response at the event.

For tasteful horror fans
The trailer for Tarsier's upcoming Little Nightmares game looks very promising: a complex, intimate side-scrolling horror game. It's called ReanimalMeanwhile, Little Nightmares itself has been handed over to new developer Supermassive, a company with a long history in horror, and a trailer for it has now been released, maintaining the Tim Burton-esque toy-like atmosphere of the first two games.

I was looking forward to Tactical Breakthrough Wizard For years, this game has been the third in the Defenestration Trilogy, a series of indie games about fun ways to throw enemies out of windows. It's made by the unfairly fun and talented developer Tom Francis. (Disclosure: I've known Tom since he was a games journalist.) In this turn-based, destructive military tactics game, you play a group of misfit wizards who make up for their uselessness as humans with some very useful abilities, like seeing a second into the future and raising the dead.

Our reviewer, Rick Lane, was totally enthralled by the game, writing, “Its blend of inventive, flexible puzzles and wickedly entertaining writing should be enough to warrant active play on anyone's console. But what qualifies it for the Bureau of Special Arcane Arts is how boldly it critiques the murky morality of military-themed games.”

Is AI a Threat to Reggae’s Exciting Soundclash Tradition? | Music

debtA few days after the assassination attempt, Donald Trump’s voice boomed over the loudspeakers in Montego Bay, Jamaica: “If you needed an assassin, call your bodyguard who’s going to kill four people at Sumfest in Montego Bay.” A reggae riddim played, and the crowd, expecting laughter, erupted in surprised laughter.

The Bodyguard crew are fresh off taking the stage at Sumfest Global Sound Clash, a musical combat contest where sound systems pit themselves against each other with exclusive (and often incendiary) recordings featuring creative mixes, bombastic MCs, star guests and inside jokes. But this Trump-like AI vocalist jolts a decades-old musical tradition in which authenticity and originality are paramount, and sound systems pay artists big fees for vocals for their clashes.

“AI will disrupt the industry,” says Fabian Andersson, a dub agent who works between artists and sound systems to secure exclusive tracks. Though he refuses to dabble in the technology, he knows studios that are, and even goes so far as to send clients videos of artists’ recording sessions to verify their legitimacy.

Jamaican music clashed in the 1950s, when music curators imported records from the United States and played them to crowds on customized mobile sound systems. “Jamaica became the loudest island on earth, and showcases drew bigger crowds than ever before,” Island Records founder Chris Blackwell wrote in his 2022 memoir. As more sound systems appeared on the scene, a battle ensued for the attention of the crowd: “Who could play the best tunes? Who could make the biggest, toughest sound?”

In preparation for a clash, the sound system would collaborate with the artist to record an exclusive dubplate, which is often an aggressive dub-style cover with rewritten lyrics to suit a battle scenario. A famous example is the Fugees’ remake of Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly,” which was originally written by the group. As a battle dub plate The lyric goes, “Kill the sound boy with that sound.” Anderson says it can cost anywhere from $150 to $800 to get an artist to appear on one of these tracks, with the most exclusive dubplates running into the thousands. Supercat and Shabba Ranks are among the most popular artists.

As the Sumfest crowd blared their vuvuzelas, German sound system Warrior Sound released an exclusive dub recorded by Jamaican up-and-comer Niggy Boy. The lyrics are: Viral hit Continent changed with a shout out to Warrior: “Sumfest / We’ll beat ’em / We’ll win the trophy.” Other artists heard on the clash include Bounty Killer, Damian Marley, Capleton, Beres Hammond and The Heptones.

Anderson says most selectors only use a few seconds of a dub “to get the point across.” Songs can’t be repeated, so dubplates need to be chock full to build momentum. It’s a costly process, and splicing has become common – people copy dubplates and remove the original soundsystem’s name to get a track on the cheap. With the advent of generative AI, the game is getting even dirtier. “The AI ​​is even worse.” [than splicing]” says Anderson.

Veteran British reggae/dancehall vocalist Paul Scott Levy (aka General Levy) records dubs “almost every week,” and he believes that established sound systems enforce the rules of clashing. “It’s not just about using your voice. Levy points to the recent rap battle between Kendrick Lamar and Drake as an example of a failed generative AI. When Drake released his Taylor Made freestyle, AI versions of Tupac and Snoop Dogg criticized Lamar, but “Drake got slammed for it. [AI] There is no value in being in a conflicting field.” Tupac’s estate threatened legal action against Drake, and the song was subsequently removed from all music platforms.

Soundsystems don’t give away their secrets. Notorious hired a “top secret” artist to record a dub cover of Bob Marley’s “Buffalo Soldier” (with the lyrics changed to “Japanese Soldier”), but they stress they’ll never use AI to resurrect Marley or deepfake living artists. “It’s out of respect for the artists. If they want to do it, go ahead and do it. I’ll find them and I’ll scare them,” laughs Notorious selector Bad Gal Marie.

Dynamq, the same contender who was named Sumfest champion in 2023, has a more ambivalent view: “Splicing, AI – I [the crowd] “I don’t care, I don’t care,” he said. “If it sounds good, people will go along with it. I don’t stand for it. I’d rather lose with integrity than win.”

At Sumfest, Jamaican-Japanese sound system Notorious International had the loudest vuvuzela, winning the first prize of 1 million Jamaican dollars (about $6,300). The Bodyguard ultimately came in second after a fierce “Tune Fy Tune” battle with Notorious. Courtney Shinn, founder of Bodyguard and a sound clash veteran since the early ’90s, says there are limits to using AI outside of parody skits like Trump’s voiceover. “It’s really dangerous. Singh notes that a new generation of sound systems may have to rely on AI to break into the scene, because many of the artists tend to sell to wealthy sound systems in Japan and Europe. “In Jamaica, we pay in US dollars for dubplates. Artists are charging 10, 20 times what I was charging when I started, it’s almost exorbitant,” Singh says. “Artists are very much involved in their own decline.”

Perhaps inevitably, Levy disagrees. “AI will be used to invade the once pure genres of dancehall and reggae and rob them of their true atmosphere,” he says, defending the real human voice. “Our voices are our bread and butter.”

Review: Game On – An exciting day at the interactive gaming expo

Game On, an exhibition that debuted at the Barbican in London in 2002, offers a captivating journey through the evolution of video games. Despite being closed briefly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been touring internationally since its inception, finally opening in Edinburgh. As someone who attended the exhibition with my father 22 years ago, I am excited to now take my children and introduce them to the classic games I loved in my youth. The exhibition allows visitors to play a wide range of games, from Donkey Kong to Guitar Hero, offering a nostalgic trip through the ’80s, ’90s, and ’00s.

Creating a New Competitor to EA Sports FC: Exciting News for Gamers from FIFA

Press the Button: Exploring the Exciting Gameplay of Dragon’s Dogma 2 | Games

I love how games keep me so occupied that I think about them all day long while living my real life. This doesn’t happen a lot these days because I’ve played so many games over the past 30 years. It happens when a game does something I’ve never seen before. For example, last year’s The Legend of Zelda: Kingdom of Tears featured a reckless gimmick. Or sometimes it’s because of something I do, like Dragon’s Dogma 2, which I’m still playing after reviewing last week. We’ve seen it before, but not for very long.

In the 12 years between the original Dragon’s Dogma and this sequel, Elden Ring is the only game that has come close to recapturing that brand of fantasy action role-playing with its chaotic, stubborn idiosyncrasies. This is a game where you can ruin a quest by fooling around for too long before pursuing the next objective. On an otherwise empty journey through the countryside, a griffin can appear and run you over to death almost instantly. The multidimensional beings who act as your companions on your journey contract a mysterious disease that unleashes the apocalypse when you save the game. You only have one save slot, so every decision counts. If you make a mistake, you have to accept it.

While some players have had disappointing reactions to the game’s inflexibility, I respect Dragon’s Dogma 2’s willingness to ruin your day at times. It will not bend to your will. You need to work around the rules, even if you don’t necessarily know what they are at first. At first, you might be annoyed that characters often tell you about interesting legends and rumors, but the game also marks them on the map to show you where they are likely to be found. And over time, when you are left out in the wilderness at night, without camping gear, and try to take shelter in a cave which leads to a crumbling mountain shrine, you may find a real Sphinx there. You realized that even if someone had marked the location on your map, you would never have done that. You must have been in awe the first time you saw those glowing eyes in the dark.

Conventional wisdom in open-world games has long held that games are structured like to-do lists. A character with an icon above their head will appear, they will give you something to do, and the game will conveniently mark the location and start checking boxes before receiving the reward. The map is full of small icons that show you where to find things you might need to upgrade your equipment or further your objectives. In recent years, games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring have ditched these conventions, making their worlds feel once again mystical, realistic, and dangerous, but not Dragon’s Dogma 2.

The appeal of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is that it is less susceptible to external influences. Dragon’s Dogma 2 feels like the development team has spent the last decade or more playing only their own games. It’s appealingly free from outside influences and doesn’t adopt any of the ideas that other games have become standard for since 2012. For example, you cannot use menus to fast-traverse the map, except in a few rare cases. If you want to go somewhere, you have to walk. For many years.

You follow that path and if you stray from it, you’re very likely to run into something that will kill you. But you’ll also have adventures like when I found a haunted castle full of skeletons. By the time you and your team reach your next town as the night draws on, exhausted and full of trinkets you picked up along the way, you’ll feel like you’ve actually accomplished something. One way to get around on foot is by riding an oxcart. This takes even more time than incredible walking, unless the character falls asleep and wakes up at the destination. Also, during your journey, you may be attacked by monsters, destroy your entire cart, and end up stranded in a strange land in the middle of the night. It’s like a cruel joke.

What all of this gives the player is what I would describe as a feeling of being fully awake. You can’t switch off your brain when playing games like this. With no minimap or quest markers to tell you where to go, you have to remember what people say, use your eyes to read your way, and find things in the distance. You must be ready to fight when called upon, and be ready to run for your life when cornered. I keep seeing things I’ve never seen before.

Games like this have periodically pulled me out of my funk over the decades, reminding me that they can still be exciting and unpredictable. Regular reader Iain wrote the question last week that was part of the impetus for this issue. “As a gamer in my late 70s, I’ve been playing games since 1985. I think I’ve reached a point where I’ve seen it all before. Are there truly innovative titles, or do they stick to the ongoing series (some of which reach double digits)?” Well, Ian, for me Dragon’s Dogma 2 is one of those games that restores my faith. It may be a sequel, but it hasn’t been this great yet.

Microsoft reveals exciting new Indiana Jones game

History isn’t full of glorious Indiana Jones video games. The Fate of Atlantis, a beautiful adventure from LucasArts. A pretty good Lego game. A proper imperial tomb. A great-looking SNES side-scrolling game, Greatest Adventures… good There are games, but very few of them are classic games that transcend the brand like Knights of the Old Republic. Maybe that is about to change.

At Microsoft’s latest Developer Direct online event streamed Thursday night, we saw: 12 minute preview Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a globe-trotting first-person adventure set between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. Rigorous space simulation
