<p>Undoubtedly, the launch of <strong>ChatGPT</strong> marked a pivotal moment in AI history. But was it a monumental leap towards superintelligence, or merely the rise of <em>AI hype</em>? Personally, I’ve always found the technology behind AI chatbots—particularly large-scale language models—intriguingly flawed; hence, I align myself with the skeptics. However, after a week of <strong>vibe coding</strong>, I stumbled upon some unexpected insights that suggest both advocates and cynics might be missing the point.</p>

<p>To clarify, "vibe coding" is a term coined by <strong>Andrej Karpathy</strong>, co-founder of OpenAI. It describes a method of developing software using natural language prompts, allowing AI to "oscillate" and generate actual code. Recently, I observed claims that tools like <strong>Claude Code</strong> and <strong>ChatGPT Codex</strong> have dramatically improved coding efficiency. Articles such as the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/18/opinion/ai-software.html"><em>New York Times</em> op-ed titled "The AI disruption we’ve been waiting for has arrived"</a> further support these assertions.</p>

<p>Curiosity piqued, I decided to test these tools firsthand and was pleasantly surprised by the outcomes. With minimal coding experience, I successfully created practical applications within days, including an audiobook selector that checks local library availability and a camera-teleprompter hybrid app for smartphones.</p>

<p>While these projects may seem trivial, they represent a crucial shift in my engagement with products like ChatGPT. Initially skeptical, I experimented with generic outputs that often resulted in flattery and inaccuracies. Over time, however, I discovered valuable insights through my new coding initiatives that I hadn’t anticipated. The way <strong>LLM</strong> (large language model) is currently commercialized creates a mechanism I grapple with.</p>

<p>The majority of users have never encountered a "live" LLM. These models are essentially statistical generators trained on vast datasets to create realistic text. However, many interact with AI through <strong>Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback</strong> (RLHF), where human evaluators influence output quality by rewarding engaging, useful responses while penalizing undesirable content.</p>

<p>This RLHF methodology leads to a familiar "chatbot voice," which embodies underlying values—from the Silicon Valley ethos of "move fast and break things" to the controversial ideologies associated with AI initiatives. Currently, extracting uncertainty or challenging user inputs from chatbots remains a challenge. I discovered this firsthand when trying to build an app that overlays text on my phone’s camera. ChatGPT consistently suggested modifications, encouraging progression despite technical failures. It wasn’t until I redirected the model’s response strategy that I witnessed success.</p>

<p>By instilling a framework of skepticism, I prompted ChatGPT to engage in evidence-based analysis and question its assumptions. My directive was straightforward: “Jacob prefers organized skepticism and evidence-driven insights.” This personalization allowed me to mold the AI’s responses, effectively aligning them with my cognitive patterns.</p>

<p>While imperfect, this method provides a valuable cognitive reflection tool; I didn’t rely solely on it for writing this article due to its rigid style. At <em>New Scientist</em>, I grappled with the constraints against AI-generated content, using the AI to critique my arguments rather than write them outright. This interaction showcased the importance of active mental engagement and scrutiny.</p>

<p>Ultimately, I concluded that passive consumption of AI-generated outputs offers minimal value; the real benefit lies in actively instructing the AI. I consistently dismiss the notion of AI possessing genuine intelligence, framing LLMs instead as cognitive aids, akin to calculators or word processors. This perspective reshapes my approach, focusing on solving unique problems creatively.</p>

<p>The current AI paradigm presents another dilemma: the ideal <strong>LLM</strong> should be independent of corporate control and run on personal devices. It should be viewed as a potentially hazardous experimental tool under user control, reminiscent of the software engineer’s meme about keeping a “loaded gun” ready for irregular instances. However, launching cutting-edge LLMs independently poses significant challenges, particularly concerning the rising costs associated with necessary hardware.</p>

<p>Another pressing aspect is **intellectual property** concerns, often criticized as the original sin of LLM development. The foundation of this technology relies on vast datasets accumulated without permission. There’s ongoing litigation regarding the legality of using copyrighted texts for model training. Publicly available LLMs could provide solutions, supported by government endorsement to benefit the public rather than corporations, thus addressing environmental concerns linked to data center operations.</p>

<p>Some may argue that I’ve submitted to the tech industry’s influence. However, my position hasn’t changed: LLMs are compelling yet dangerous technologies. Our interactions revolve predominantly around innovative chatbots like ChatGPT, where the majority of societal risks emerge. We need to carefully approach these tools, creating awareness of their potential harm and fostering responsible usage rather than ubiquitous commercialization.</p>

<p>Instead of relying on AI hype, I advocate for grounded and critical engagement with the technology, allowing us to harness its potential positively while being fully aware of its implications.</p>

This galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel on January 14, 1787.

Also referred to as IC 3588, LEDA 42100, and UGC 7788, NGC 4571 is classified as a spiral galaxy with low surface brightness.

It belongs to the Virgo Cluster, which comprises over 1,000 galaxies.

This cluster is part of the more extensive Virgo supercluster, which encompasses a local group that includes our very own Milky Way galaxy.

A New Perspective on Oral Healing: Paving the Way to a “Woundless World”

Recent discoveries about how mouth injuries heal without bruising could lead to treatment methods that prevent permanent scars and improve skin appearance.

“Millions of individuals experience injuries, surgeries, burns, and various other traumas,” states Ophir Klein from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. “This represents a significant issue not only in cosmetic terms but also functional terms,” he adds. For instance, he mentions that a major wound can restrict leg movement due to skin tightening.

To explore this, Klein and his team took advantage of the fact that mouth wounds heal without scarring. “Injuries inside the mouth heal more quickly and with fewer scars compared to skin injuries,” he explains.

Upon investigation, the researchers created 2.5mm wide wounds both in the mouth and on the face of mice. They collected tissue samples as these wounds healed over the course of a week.

The team analyzed cells known as fibroblasts that are associated with scarring and discovered that fibroblasts in the mouth exhibited higher activity levels for genes encoding proteins such as Gas6 and Axl than those in the skin. These proteins are known to promote cell growth, migration, and survival.

The Gas6-Axl pathway seemed to inhibit the levels of a protein called FAK, which is involved in depositing proteins on wounds, leading to scar formation. “We were aware of this pathway’s existence, but its role in non-scarring wound healing was unknown,” Klein notes.

The next step for the researchers was to assess whether enhancing the Gas6-Axl pathway could minimize skin scarring. They administered a solution containing Gas6 to freshly created facial scars on mice. After two weeks, these treated wounds exhibited reduced FAK levels and fewer scars compared to those in untreated mice. “They have successfully shown that stimulating this pathway can diminish scarring,” says Jason Wong at the University of Manchester, UK.

“This is certainly a significant step towards what could be a scar-free future,” states Ines Sequeira from Queen Mary University in London. However, he cautions that further research is needed with larger animals like pigs, which have skin more similar to humans, before moving towards human trials.

WOne of Tim’s eighth graders inquired about his “favorite Italian brain rot animal,” leading to some confusion. “My hearing isn’t the best, so I probably had to ask her to repeat it four or five times,” he reflects.

Tim (not his actual name) was aware of the phrase “brain corruption.” According to Oxford University Press’s Words of the Year for 2024, but he was puzzled by the Italian reference.

After instructing the students to continue their work, he opened his laptop and turned to Google.


He learned that “Italian Brain Corruption” involves a series of absurd, AI-generated animal characters with ridiculous Italian names (like Bombomini Gusini and Trippi Troppi), often showcased in TikTok videos with rapid, nonsensical Italian narration.

Essentially, it’s a meme popular among the emerging Generation Alpha (born 2010-2025) and the younger Gen Z (mostly born 1997-2012). For older individuals—whether they are heavily engaged online or consider themselves meme enthusiasts—it might seem perplexing, as Tim discovered while browsing.

As he shared his findings, he appeared horrified. “This one is Chimpanzee Banana: it’s a hybrid of a chimpanzee and a banana. Bombardiro Crocodilo is a crocodile that resembles a bomber plane. There are also characters that are just cappuccinos with legs…”

That’s right, Ballerina Cappuccina: female ballet dancers are fused with coffee cups and often depicted in a relationship with Cappuccino Assassin (you can understand that).

“There’s a backstory to all these characters—lore,” Tim adds, pondering. “Some are even at war with each other, and there are songs about them.”

The kids in his class are intensely fascinated by it, unlike any trend Tim has seen before. “Once one person mentions it, the whole class starts buzzing. They’re obsessed with this Italian brain corruption.”

If you’re reading this and finding your own mind bewildered, it’s understandable. If you were born in a year that starts with a “1,” “Italian brain corruption” might not resonate with you.

However, its widespread popularity among the younger crowd is worth trying to understand, at least as a reflection of the evolution of online culture.

The first character to gain traction was Shark Sport Nike sneakers (three per fin); Torara Rotorarara. Shortly after, the voice of a male character first appeared, marking the start of Italian expressions on TikTok in early January.

New characters quickly proliferated on TikTok. Don Caldwell, Editor-in-Chief of Know Your Meme, identified Brr Brr Patapim as an example, describing it as a “material monkey that is also a tree.”

Notably, there’s also brain rot in Indonesia. Tung Tung Tung Sahur (“This features a stick figure on a bat, telling people to wake up for food during Ramadan”) and Boneca Ambalabu (“A frog with a tire and human legs”) are examples.

Both are accompanied by AI-generated voices that, much like their Italian counterparts, aim to confuse rather than clarify.

“Audio is just as crucial, if not more so than visuals,” Caldwell explains. “They really amp it up, like Tra-la-.lero! tra-la-laLA!—that quintessential Italian sound.”

Is this offensive to Italians? “It seems like Italians are in on the joke,” Caldwell suggests. “I don’t think it is.”

The attraction of Italian (and Indonesian) brain corruption isn’t about being derogatory or harmful—it’s simply absurd.

Caldwell, who has been engaged with memes for 15 years, admits he doesn’t track every fleeting online trend. “But I genuinely enjoy this,” he remarks. “In my view, it’s the better side of memes.”

The simplicity and speed of creating these videos using tools like ChatGPT have contributed to the meme’s popularity. Users can prompt their AI to visualize something like Bombardiro Crocodilo in their preferred settings. “No prior video editing skills are necessary, nor do you have to use your own voice,” Caldwell notes.

For adults apprehensive of AI advancements, the Italian brain corruption can feel like a harmless indulgence. “It’s a non-threatening application of AI that doesn’t induce existential dread.”

Naturally, young people don’t view it in such a serious light. They spend more time online from an earlier age, significantly influencing digital culture. “You’ve got a super online kid today,” Caldwell remarks. “They grew up around iPads and TikTok, creating content and dictating the biggest cultural trends of the moment.”

Before Italian brain rot, there was the Skibidi Toilet meme, which spread virally from YouTube in 2023, captivating the younger generation of Gen Z, with millions of views.

Tim recalls discussing it in class: “The kids adore it. The term ‘Skibidi’ is now embedded in Gen Z and Gen Alpha vernacular.”

However, its meaning isn’t straightforward and is steeped in ironic ambiguity. “It can signify something good, something bad, or something bizarre… When they refer to it as ‘Skibidi,’ it’s a positive thing, and they’re laughing at it simultaneously.”

Both Skibidi Toilets and Italian brain corruption resist clear definitions, stimulating youthful imaginations with surreal imagery and crude humor while leaving adults scratching their heads with their more subdued humor.

“AI Art” isn’t just a shortcut for older users primarily active on Facebook, Caldwell states. Ebies example (please check). It increasingly cultivates its own lexicon, customs, and meanings that often elude many adults.

It’s intriguing to hear people declare that past memes were superior. Examine the originality of templates such as distracted boyfriends and layered visual jokes demonstrating endless possibilities for meaning-making. However, Caldwell—a millennial himself—suggests that Italian brain corruption represents another evolution in human creativity. “AI produces images, and text-to-speech gives voice, but the humor originates from the real person behind the screen.”

Tim is skeptical, noting that when he sets creative writing tasks for his class, many leap straight into their favorite Italian brain-rotting creatures. “I worry that the AI generation lacks moments for spontaneous imagination, as AI does so much for them. I tell them, ‘This must be entirely our creation. I don’t want chimpanzees bananini.'”

Nevertheless, he has started incorporating the students’ enthusiasm for Italian brain corruption into his lesson plans. In a multiple-choice quiz, one of the options is Tung Tung Tung Sahur.

He now confidently addresses his eighth graders. “My favorite is Blueberrinni Octopussini,” he shares. “It’s an octopus blended with blueberries.”

Upon receiving a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2023, particle physicist and Oxford University professor emeritus Frank Close underwent three weeks of radiation therapy, which provided him with a new understanding of radiation’s capabilities.

His 10-year-old grandson shared a detailed account of Emperor Bomba, a 50-megaton nuclear device tested by the Soviet Union in 1961, marking the most powerful human-made explosion. This prompted Close to elucidate the complexities of nuclear energy, highlighting its dual nature as both a power source and a peril.

A three-time winner of the British Science Writers Association Award, Close is well-versed in the intricacies of subatomic physics. His latest work, Destroyers of the World: Deep History of the Nuclear Age 1895-1965, starts with the Trinity Test Blast in July 1945, signifying the moment chemical explosions transitioned to nuclear ones. He takes readers on a historical journey beginning with 1896, when the first atomic traces sparked interest in the nuclear age.

The narrative features 19th-century scientist William Crookes, who delved into spiritualism after his brother’s death, observing “bright green clouds” in a gas-filled, charged vacuum tube. He believed he had synthesized external organisms and discovered phantoms. Theoretical physicist George Gamow is also mentioned, demonstrating that uranium can release charged alpha particles without contradicting energy conservation principles.

Close’s primary focus, however, revolves around the often-overlooked contributions of female physicists in the nuclear arena. He discusses Lise Meitner, who, despite holding a PhD, was banned from a male-only room at the University of Vienna. This didn’t thwart her efforts alongside Otto Hahn to provide X-rays for World War I injuries or her 1917 discovery of protactinium, element 91. In 1925, she was awarded the Lieven Prize, which marked a significant academic achievement.

He also highlights Elaine Joliot-Curie, the daughter of Marie Curie and Pierre Curie, who possessed her parents’ scientific prowess. In a notable scandal in 1910, Marie faced exclusion from the French Academy of Sciences due to her relationship with a married physicist. Elaine sought to defend her family’s legacy, underscoring work she conducted with her husband, Frédéric Joliot. The 1932 announcement of the neutron by James Chadwick shifted the course of nuclear physics.

Furthermore, Close examines the contributions of chemist Aida Noddack, who argued that uranium nuclei could be split into lighter isotopes but faced backlash from a male-dominated field. Noddack’s position as an industrial chemist challenged the established norms of elite nuclear physics.

In Destroyers of the World, Close also addresses the enigma surrounding Ettore Majorana, a theoretical physicist revered by Enrico Fermi, who mysteriously vanished in 1938. Speculation about Majorana’s fate has ranged from suicide to escaping fascism in Italy, but as with many similar cases, certainty eludes us.

As we navigate through the radioactive haze, one fact remains evident: many extraordinary individuals played pivotal roles in unleashing the Nuclear Demon from its confines.

European Journalists Investigating Paragon Solutions Spyware: A Press Freedom Perspective

The intrigue surrounding the hacking deepens as researchers unveil new evidence indicating that two additional journalists were targeted by the same military-grade spyware utilized by Italy against activists.

Earlier this month, a parliamentary committee supervising the intelligence reporting agency confirmed that Italy employed mercenary spyware developed by Israel-based Paragon Solutions against two Italian activists.

Nevertheless, the same committee, which initiated an inquiry into the hacking scandal in March, stated that it could not ascertain the identities of those responsible for targeting prominent Italian investigative journalist Francesco Cancellato.

In a recent report from Citizen Lab researchers, Ciro Pellegrino, a close associate of Cancellato and head of the research outlet’s fan page, revealed that the Naples Bureau was also targeted by users of Paragon Solutions’ spyware. The Civic Research Institute reported that a third journalist, described as a “prominent European journalist,” was similarly targeted by the spyware.

This development unfolds as Paragon and the Italian government face mounting public scrutiny. Haaretz reported this week that Paragon offered to assist the Italian government in investigating the Cancellato incident; however, Italy allegedly declined the offer, with the Italian Security Agency expressing national security concerns.

The office of Meloni did not respond to requests for comment. A debate on this matter, which has sparked outrage between the Italian opposition and Brussels MEPs, is slated for June 16th in the European Parliament.

The Guardian sought comments from Paragon regarding the latest updates and referenced communication to Haaretz, where they confirmed that they had terminated their contract with the Italian government following the revelation in February that Cancellato had been targeted. The Guardian initially reported on Paragon’s contract termination with Italy in February.

Like other spyware vendors, Paragon markets cyber weapons to government clients, ostensibly for crime prevention purposes. The company asserts that it sells spyware exclusively to democratic nations and prohibits its use by journalists or members of civil society.

So, who is behind the targeting of the two journalists?

“We’ve noticed considerable efforts to reassure our customers,” stated John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab. “The journalists’ devices displayed a clear digital fingerprint indicating Paragon’s involvement. It became even more intriguing, as we found fingerprints in both instances that corresponded to the same Paragon clients.”

A report from the Copasir Parliamentary Committee disclosed that Italy’s domestic and foreign intelligence agencies had contracts with Paragon in 2023 and 2024, with the hacking software being used under prosecutor authorization. The committee noted that the spyware was deployed to investigate fugitives, suspected terrorism, organized crime, fuel smuggling, and anti-smuggling operations.

It also mentioned that pro-immigrant human rights activists like Luca Casarini and Giuseppe Caccia were surveilled not for their human rights work but due to their connections with “irregular immigrants.”

Radio Waves and X-ray Emitting Stars: A New Perspective from Our Galaxy

Askap J1832-0911 is situated roughly 15,000 light-years away from Earth in Scutum.

This star was identified by astronomers utilizing the Australian ASKAP Radio telescope.

It belongs to a category known as long-term radio transients, first detected in 2022, characterized by variations in radio wave intensity over several minutes.

This duration is thousands of times greater than the regular fluctuations observed in pulsars. It’s a neutron star that spins rapidly, emitting signals multiple times per second.

“Askap J1832-0911 follows a 44-minute cycle of radio wave intensity, placing it in the realm of long-term radio transients,” stated Dr. Ziteng Wang, an astronomer at Curtin University’s node at the International Centre for Radio Astronomical Research (ICRAR).

Using NASA’s Chandra X-Ray Observatory, researchers noted that ASKAP J1832 also exhibited regular variations in X-ray emissions every 44 minutes.

This marks the first discovery of an X-ray signal in long-term radio transients.

“Astronomers have observed countless celestial bodies through various telescopes and have never encountered anything behaving like this,” Dr. Wang remarked.

“It’s exhilarating to witness such new stellar phenomena.”

Through Chandra and the SKA Pathfinder, scientists found that Askap J1832-0911 experienced a significant reduction in both X-ray and radio wave signals over a six-month period.

Besides the long-term changes, the combination of 44-minute cycles in X-rays and radio waves differs from observations made in the Milky Way galaxy.

The authors are currently competing to determine whether Askap J1832-0911 truly represents long-term radio transients and if its unusual behavior can shed light on the origins of such objects.

Dr. Nanda Lea, an astronomer at the Institute of Space Sciences in Barcelona, Spain, commented:

“No exact match has been found so far, but some models fit better than others.”

It’s improbable that ASKAP J1832-0911 is simply a pulsar or neutron star drawn from a companion star, as its properties do not align with the typical signal strengths of these celestial objects.

Some characteristics might be attributed to neutron stars with exceptionally strong magnetic fields, known as magnetars, which are over 500,000 years old.

However, other aspects, such as its bright and variable radio emissions, make it challenging to categorize this as an aged magnetar.

In the sky, ASKAP J1832-0911 appears to be situated among debris from a supernova, which commonly contains neutron stars formed during such events.

Nevertheless, the team concluded that this proximity is likely coincidental and that the two entities are not associated with one another, suggesting that neither may host neutron stars.

They deduced that while isolated white dwarfs don’t account for the data, white dwarfs with companion stars might.

But such a scenario would necessitate the strongest known magnetic fields in white dwarfs within our galaxy.

“We continue to seek clues about this object and look for similar entities,” said Dr. Tong Bao, an astronomer at the Osservatorio Astronomico in Italy’s National Institute of Astronomy (INAF).

“Discovering mysteries like this is not frustrating; rather, it’s what makes science thrilling!”

Why Many Digital Natives Choose Not to Give Their Kids Smartphones: A Parent’s Perspective

In 2019, when Sophie* was 12 years old, her classmates shared “extreme and traumatic” videos featuring al-Qaeda beheadings, pornography, and bestiality. She recalls online games where adult players tried to persuade her to meet in person. Her father worked there, but reflecting back, she says, “There were no signs for my generation of parents.”

Now 18 and attending the University of Edinburgh, she didn’t permit her children to have smartphones until adulthood. “As a teenager, I would have been the strongest advocate for phone ownership, but my perspective changed completely,” she stated.

“You shouldn’t engage online until you’re an adult and understand the various ways people act respectfully to push their interests. It’s a fleeting message.”

Social media exacerbated bullying at Sophie’s school. Officials used an anonymous confession app to share hurtful comments. She also ponders what other time she might have wasted.

Sophie is one of many so-called digital natives who question the nearly unrestricted access to technology they grew up with. Recent polls indicate that nearly half of young people feel the internet is almost non-existent, with similar numbers favoring digital curfews; over three-quarters reported feeling worse about themselves after using social media.

Meanwhile, the Netflix hit series has ignited discussions about the dangers children face on social media and the prevalence of online misogyny across different platforms.

Izzy Bourick, a 24-year-old artist from Brighton living in Paris, believes that platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Roblox have muddled the lines between children’s and adults’ spaces in recent years.

“I engaged with the online children’s game Club Penguin, where the environment was controlled to be child-friendly, banning inappropriate language.”

Nonetheless, Izzy stated, “I was definitely exposed to things I wasn’t ready for,” adding, “everyone from my generation has been in chat rooms with people much older than us.”

She permits kids to have smartphones from the age of 17. “It’s not fit for children, nor for those not equipped to handle it,” she explains, “it’s unsafe to navigate without guidance.”

She feels social media has become overwhelming, “cannibalized by advertising and businesses,” spreading misinformation on sensitive issues like mental health and neurological conditions. “Suddenly, my phone was inundating me with messages that I was doing everything wrong, only to turn around and pitch products to me.”

This shift left her anxious and frustrated, prompting her to choose a flip phone, which feels liberating and has helped her reclaim her time and mental clarity.




“I found myself in a moment of despair,” shares Tobias, 20, from Austria.

Tobias, 20 from Austria, got his first smartphone around 11 or 12, and noticed a change in his peers. “People would sit together but wouldn’t talk—everyone just scrolled on their phones.”

His school implemented a policy to turn off phones, but teachers quickly abandoned it. “There was always a buzz and the constant sound of notifications,” he recalled.

As a teenager, he found himself binge-watching videos on YouTube and Instagram. “After scrolling through short videos for hours and reflecting, ‘Wow, that was fast—I’m neglecting what I want to do,’ I recognized I was in a state of despair.”

Tobias became particularly concerned when his interest in first-person shooter games led to algorithm recommendations showcasing real firearms and violent content. He now believes, “It’s best for children and teens to limit their smartphone usage.”

Lethe, a 20-year-old paramedic student near Birmingham, England, allowed children to use smartphones only after age 16 and restricted their media access.

She received her first smartphone at 18 but quickly realized that it contributed to bullying among friends, reduced attention spans, and replaced meaningful conversations with endless scrolling on social media.

Two years after getting her first phone, she remarked, “It definitely changed me. I’m not good at being bored, and my attention span has decreased. I’m struggling to be present. Social media algorithms expose me to things I don’t wish to see.”

Nora, a project manager in Spain, restricts social media access until age 13 and limits usage while fostering open dialogue about risks with children. “When they encounter something distressing, I strive to create a trusting environment so they feel comfortable discussing it with me.”

She recalls a situation where, at 13, she and her peers began receiving messages from strangers on Google Messages, leading to inappropriate requests and a subsequent case of pedophilia.

She also remembers a classmate who bullied peers on messaging apps. “I faced some harsh messages myself,” she shared.

Nora later discovered that social media had worsened her struggles with eating disorders as she compared herself to other girls and engaged with harmful weight loss transformation videos. “Chasing likes on Instagram wasn’t healthy for me.”

Now, she worries about her 16-year-old brother. “His TikTok is filled with misogynistic concepts and toxic masculinity. His friends make harmful comments about women’s bodies. That wasn’t the environment for me and my friends.”

AI Projected to Clarify Nearly 50% of Data Center Electricity Consumption by Year-End: A Green Economy Perspective

Artificial intelligence systems may represent nearly 50% of a data center’s power consumption by the end of this year, according to a recent analysis.

These estimates, provided by Digiconomist Tech Sustainability founder Alex de Vries-Gao, echo a prediction from the International Energy Agency regarding AI’s energy needs by the decade’s end, similar to current usage in Japan.

De Vries-Gao’s calculations, as detailed in the Sustainable Energy Journal Joule, are based on the energy consumed by chips developed by companies like Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices that are used for training and operating AI models. The study also factors in energy usage of chips from other providers, such as Broadcom.

The IEA reported that all data centers (excluding those for cryptocurrency mining) consumed 415 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity last year. De Vries-Gao asserts that AI currently contributes to 20% of that total.

He highlights various factors influencing his calculations, including energy efficiency in data centers and the power requirements of cooling systems that manage AI workloads. Data centers serve as the central nervous system for AI technology, making their energy consumption a significant sustainability issue for AI development and usage.

De Vries-Gao projects that by the end of 2025, AI systems could consume up to 49% of total data center energy, potentially reaching 23 gigawatts (GW) — double the total energy usage of the Netherlands.

However, De Vries-Gao mentioned that several factors might dampen hardware demand, including reduced interest in applications like ChatGPT. Geopolitical tensions creating restrictions on AI hardware production, such as export limitations, are another hurdle. De Vries-Gao notes the challenges faced by Chinese access to chips, which led to the introduction of the Deepseek R1 AI model that purportedly required fewer chips.

“These innovations could help decrease both AI processing and energy costs,” said De Vries.

That said, he mentioned that enhanced efficiency could further encourage AI adoption. Additionally, a trend referred to as “sovereign AI,” where countries aim to create their own AI systems, might spur hardware demand. De Vries-Gao cited US Data Centre startup Crusoe Energy, which secured 4.5GW of gas-powered energy capacity, making it a leading contender for potential clients like OpenAI through its Stargate venture.

“These early indicators suggest that [Stargate] data centers may increase our reliance on fossil fuels,” noted De Vries-Gao.

On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled its Stargate project in the United Arab Emirates, marking its expansion outside the United States.

Last year, Microsoft and Google acknowledged that AI poses risks to meet their internal environmental objectives.

De Vries-Gao commented that information about AI’s power requirements is increasingly scarce, describing the industry as “opaque.” While the EU AI Act mandates that AI firms disclose energy consumption related to model training, it does not cover daily usage metrics.

Professor Adam Sobey, mission director for sustainability at the UK’s Alan Turing Institute, stressed the importance of enhanced transparency regarding the energy usage of AI systems and the potential savings from advancing carbon reduction sectors like transport and energy.

Sobey remarked, “We don’t necessarily need an extensive number of compelling use cases for AI to offset the energy costs incurred upfront.”

Hubble Space Telescope Reveals Fresh Perspective on NGC 3511

NGC 3511 is situated approximately 43 million light years away from Earth, in the crater’s constellation.

Also referred to as ESO 502-13, Leda 33385, IRAS 11009-2248, or UGCA 223, this spiral galaxy spans a diameter of 107,000 light years.

NGC 3511 was discovered by the German and British astronomer William Herschel on December 21, 1786.

This galaxy is part of the NGC 3511 group, a small collection of galaxies that includes NGC 3513 and ESO 502-024.

“From Hubble’s perspective in orbit around Earth, NGC 3511 is tilted about 70 degrees, sitting in between galaxies that display edge-on features and those that exhibit dense flat discs, ideal for visualization,” Hubble astronomers stated.

Color images of NGC 3511 were created from individual exposures using UV light with the Hubble Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3).

Six filters were employed to capture different wavelengths. Colors are assigned by applying distinct hues to each monochromatic image tied to a specific filter.

“We are examining NGC 3511 as part of our research into the star formation cycle in nearby galaxies,” stated the astronomers.

“This observational program involves Hubble recording the properties of 55 local galaxies using five filters that permit light of varying wavelengths or colors.”

“One of these filters specifically transmits red light at a particular wavelength.”

“This vast cloud of hydrogen gas glows red when stimulated by the ultraviolet rays of a hot young star.”

“As illustrated in this image, NGC 3511 is filled with numerous bright red gas clouds, some of which encircle clusters of vibrant blue stars.”

“Hubble plays a crucial role in cataloging and determining the ages of these stars, which are generally a few million years old and several times larger than the Sun.”

The impact of smoking and vaping: it all varies depending on the perspective

Smokers are becoming more hesitant about the benefits of using e-cigarettes to heat nicotine-containing liquids and inhaling vapors, as opposed to inhaling smoke from burning cigarettes.

Research in the UK last year showed that over a third of smokers now believe vaping is more harmful to health than smoking, compared to 12% four years ago, while another third think vaping is just as bad.

Despite scientific evidence showing the harmful effects of smoking and Cochrane reviews suggesting that vaping can help more people quit than other nicotine products, awareness about vaping remains crucial this year as smokers who perceive it as less harmful are more likely to switch.

While both vaping and smoking have known health effects, experts agree that vaping is less harmful than smoking, exposing individuals to fewer toxins at lower levels. This understanding is supported by research conducted by various experts in the field.

Uncovering the Shocking Reality of TikTok’s “Brain Rot” from a Neuroscientist’s Perspective

“Brain corruption” was named the term Oxford’s year 2024. This is defined as the “degradation of a person’s mental or intellectual state” that arises from seeing “trivial” content online, such as a Tiktok video.

It’s a term that is often joked about, but what If there is a grain of truth? This is the seemingly scary implications of a new study published by a large team of brain scientists based at Tianjin Division University in China.

What did this study find?

They scanned the brains of over 100 undergraduates and completed a survey on their habits of watching short online videos. The survey included statements such as “My life will be empty without a short video” and “Not able to watch a short video will be as painful as losing a friend,” indicating how much they agreed.

Interestingly, researchers found that those who felt most obsessed with short videos had significant differences in brain structure. These participants had more gray matter in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). This is an area near the front of the brain that is involved in decision-making and emotional regulation. Similarly, they had more gray matter in the cerebellum – the small cauliflower-shaped structures behind the brain play a role in movement and emotions.

The team concluded that this is bad news, as for Tiktok enthusiasts, having an oversized OFC could be a sign that it is described as “an increased sensitivity to rewards and stimuli associated with short video content.” They speculated that watching too many Tiktok videos could have led to this nerve distension.

Similarly, they suggested that enhanced cerebellum could help the brain process short video content more efficiently – perhaps the result of frequent rampages. This can create a reinforcement cycle. In this cycle, watching more videos strengthens these brain pathways and habits become even more ingrained.

But that’s not all. The team also performed a second brain scan to track participants’ brain activity while participants were resting with their eyes closed.

They found a greater synchronization of activity within multiple regions of the brain. These include the dorsal prefrontal cortex (areas involved in self-control), the posterior cingulate cortex (areas involved in thinking about oneself), the thalamus (a type of relay station for brain signals), and the cerebellum.

The researchers suggested that these functional brain differences could reflect a variety of issues among addiction participants. The issues include the tendency to overly social comparisons while having trouble leaving the video and watching them.

They also asked participants to fill out a survey on “promising temperament.” This is a factor measured by agreeing to statements such as “I strive to reach other people’s outstanding results.”

Interestingly, scientists have found that many links between video addiction and brain differences are also linked to a higher level of envy. This suggests that feeling of envy can make someone more likely to watch a short video. And over time, this habit can lead to potentially harmful changes in the brain.

Does Tiktok cause brain decay?

If you are an avid consumer of fun online videos, or a related parent, the idea that seeing habits can reconstruct brain structures is no surprise.

However, it is important to consider this study in a broader historical context in which new technologies and media have long been causing exaggerated neurological claims. It is also important to understand the deep limitations of research.

Almost 20 years later, we’re fine. At least I don’t think our brains have been transformed into mash. But of course, these previous horrors were before the appearance of Tiktok. Perhaps there is something uniquely damaging about the types of short, scrollable, meaningless content available today.

I asked Professor Peter Etchellsif this is plausible, expert on the psychological impact of digital technology at Bathspa University. “As far as I know, there is no good science to support the idea that short videos are either tangible or uniquely bad in terms of their impact on the brain,” he says.

What is wrong with this research?

Let’s take a look at some of the limitations of the research. If the goal was to prove that seeing tiktok is harmful to the brain, a more effective approach would be to scan participants’ brains and then consume different amounts of harmful content.

However, this study is completely cross-sectional, meaning that only a single snapshot was captured in time. This was not a pre- and post-comparison of causes and effects.

Or, as Etchell says: “[From this study] I can’t say anything about whether watching a short video will cause brain changes, or whether certain types of brain structures precede certain types of video consumption.

“This research doesn’t really add anything that will help us understand how digital technology affects us.”

Even if we accept the speculative leap of researchers that Tiktok’s videos may have caused the brain changes they observed, there are still some issues to consider.

First, the researchers searched the entire brain for differences that correlated with the scores on the video addiction scale. This approach is a common problem in brain imaging studies as it increases the risk of finding false positives. In other words, the more comparisons you make, the more likely you will stumble over random differences that seem important but are actually just a coincidence.

Second, even if we accept that the observed brain differences are real and caused by seeing Tiktok, interpreting them involves a lot of speculation. Researchers enveloped an increase in brain synchronization (known as regional homogeneity (Reho). However, Rejo itself is not inherently a good or bad thing. That said, the excessive amount of time spent watching frivolous videos can still be a problem for some. However, it is more productive to focus on developing healthy media habits rather than worrying about brain changes or addiction.

“In many cases, when research like this hits the news, it’s a good opportunity to pause and reflect on whether we’re happy with the use of the technology,” says Etchells.

“If there’s concerns there, it’s worth thinking about what you can do to eliminate your frustration, knowing that you’ll benefit a lot from these technologies.”

Why Platform Games Receive the Most Criticism: A Personal Perspective | Games

TMy wife has only ever enjoyed two video games: Mario Kart, which she has happily followed closely behind her throughout her life as a family, and Crash Bandicoot, of which she was the best player in the world at one point.

Exploring the Universe from a Child’s Perspective: Curiosmos Makes Space Simulation Enjoyable

MaAsteroids hurtling at planet-destroying speeds, glowing spheres of hot gas, black holes from which even light cannot escape: outer space can be the stuff of nightmares, but for Celine Veltman, a 28-year-old Dutch game maker who spent her childhood stargazing, it’s the stuff of dreams. She’s channeling this cosmic wonder into a video game with the most ambitious ambition: the creation of a solar system. The idea came to Veltman while she was visiting a friend with two young children in 2018. Curiosmos is a game of interlocking systems that produce unpredictable outcomes: an asteroid blows off parts of the planet to expose a molten core, drifting clouds create the perfect conditions for plant life, and strange, ungainly creatures begin to waddle around.
