Do you really need to invest in a new TV? The allure of the latest features and massive screen sizes is strong, but exercising a bit of patience could save both money and the planet. You can enhance your viewing experience with some straightforward tips and tricks.

It might seem unusual, but if you aren’t facing specific tech issues, consider adjusting the lighting in your room for an improved viewing experience. Rearranging lamps to avoid glares and replacing harsh ceiling lights with softer backlighting can create a more enjoyable atmosphere. Installing lights behind the screen can lessen eye strain and enhance perceived contrast. This technique, known as bias lighting, is used in professional settings.

For a bigger view, try moving closer to your TV. While it may sound odd, there’s a clear link between screen resolution and viewing distance.

In the era before HD, lower resolutions often justified a greater distance. However, modern 4K UHD and even 8K TVs feature such high pixel densities that you can sit much closer without eye fatigue.

Ideally, your couch should be placed 1.5 times the distance from the screen. For a 55-inch TV, this translates to a distance of about 2 meters. If comfortable, don’t hesitate to sit closer. Watching native 4K content provides you with richer detail and textures.

Watching your LED TV in a room with ambient light can lead to a more natural image, helping black tones stay genuinely black instead of gray.


Maximize Your Current Setup

If your TV’s visuals appear dull or unnatural, it’s possible that the backlighting may be weakening. For a quick adjustment, navigate to the settings menu.

You’re likely viewing the Standard Picture setting, which is typically the default. Try switching to Dynamic or Vivid mode. This can enhance the colors in your visuals and give them more vibrancy.


Not All HDMI Settings Are Created Equal

If the image still seems muted, double-check your HDMI configuration. When consuming HDR content from external devices like set-top boxes, game consoles, or UHD Blu-ray players, an underwhelming visual experience may indicate that HDR isn’t being utilized.

In this scenario, setting HDR to standard will yield a brighter overall image while retaining 4K resolution.

If your TV’s audio is less than ideal and clarity is slipping, a soundbar could be the simplest and most effective upgrade.

It’s common for flat-screen TVs to produce mediocre sound quality. Even the latest models often struggle due to their slim designs, which leave minimal space for robust speakers, resulting in disappointing audio. A well-chosen soundbar not only increases volume but also improves clarity and creates a rich soundstage, restoring a full auditory experience missing from built-in TV speakers.

When All Else Fails – It Might Be Time to Invest in a New TV

That said, certain scenarios warrant upgrading to a new TV. If it tumbles from its stand and you find yourself watching through what resembles 80’s retro visual effects, it’s time to recycle it (and we encourage you to do so) recycle electrical products.

Likewise, if the design feels outdated (I’m referring to those bulky TVs with absurdly wide bezels), an upgrade is justifiable. Wide bezels are unlikely to return to fashion. And if you’re truly drawn to OLED technology, I won’t deter you. The allure of OLED screens is so captivating that they can make even the dreariest TV shows seem appealing.

However, if your concerns stem merely from performance inconsistencies with your trusty older model or a desire for a smarter, interconnected user experience, considering alternative solutions may be a more prudent route to avoid an unnecessary major purchase.

Amazon has taken legal action against Perplexity AI, a notable AI startup, regarding a shopping functionality in its browser that enables users to automate orders. Amazon alleges that Perplexity AI has been covertly accessing customer accounts, making the AI’s actions appear as though they were human browsing.

This dispute underscores the emerging discussions about regulating the increasing utilization of AI agents, autonomous digital assistants powered by AI, and their interactions with online platforms. Perplexity is developing a browser named Comet, which incorporates an AI agent, but Amazon is opposed to allowing Comet to facilitate user shopping. This opposition is grounded in factual concerns. Microsoft found that research simulations revealed AI agents are often vulnerable to manipulation while shopping.

This situation raises numerous questions. Are Perplexity’s agents reckless buyers posing significant security threats, or is Amazon attempting to stifle its emerging competitors? Whose interests do these semi-autonomous AI agents serve—those of the customer or the manufacturer’s? And who will bear the responsibility for any misconduct? The future iteration of AI could significantly influence legal outcomes.

Perplexity is not necessarily a champion for the average consumer against Amazon’s overwhelming influence. The startup has secured $1.5 billion at a $20 billion valuation, as reported by TechCrunch. Throughout this process, the company has accumulated textual data with little regard for the rights of content creators, trained various AI systems, and subtly bypassed clear restrictions against unauthorized data scraping. Both Forbes and Wired have highlighted instances of the company allegedly plagiarizing their content through deceptive means, as noted by The Verge. We have put together an extensive list of controversies surrounding Perplexity.

The firm is eager for market share and profits, seemingly willing to trample over any competitor—big or small—to achieve its goals. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, might resonate with this mindset, often criticized for his own ruthlessness. Notably, he has invested in Perplexity on two occasions.

A Future Full of Challenges Emerges

Recently, AI has made significant advancements in music and international relations. My colleague Aisha Down reports:

This week, three songs created by artificial intelligence reached the top of music charts, including Spotify and Billboard.

According to Spotify, Breaking Rust’s “Walk My Walk” and “Livin’ on Borrowed Time” topped the U.S. “Viral 50” list, while Dutch song “We Say No, No, No to an Asylum Center,” an anti-immigrant anthem by JW “Broken Veteran,” dominated the global viral chart. Furthermore, “Breaking Rust” secured a position in the top five worldwide.

In a recent study from streaming platform Deezer, it was revealed that 50,000 AI-generated songs are uploaded daily, accounting for 34% of all music shared on the platform.

Perhaps the next wave will be in podcasting. The AI startup Inception Point produces 3,000 episodes each week. As reported, their distribution network boasts 400,000 subscribers, resulting in 12 million episode downloads, with each episode priced at $1. Apple Music and Spotify together host approximately 175,000 AI-generated podcast episodes.

On the diplomatic front, AI firm Anthropic revealed it had identified and prevented a largely automated cyberattack from Chinese state-sponsored hackers. Aisha again:

US-based Anthropic announced that its coding tool, Claude Code, was utilized by a Chinese state-supported group to target 30 organizations globally in September, leading to “several successful breaches.”

According to a blog post by Anthropic, this incident represents a “significant escalation” compared to prior AI-driven attacks they have monitored, as Claude operated mostly autonomously. During the attack, 80-90% of operations were conducted without human intervention.

“This attacker has reportedly conducted what we believe is the first documented large-scale cyberattack performed entirely without human input,” the report states.

The emergence of automated threats is becoming increasingly prevalent. Even if one cyberattack is thwarted, more could arise in rapid succession. If a single AI-generated album is removed from a platform, several others could fill the void immediately. In the not-so-distant future, we might find ourselves navigating through constant tumultuous changes.

Cloudflare Outage Triggers Error Messages Across the Internet

A vital segment of the internet’s often unseen infrastructure experienced a worldwide outage on Tuesday, leading to error messages appearing across various websites.

Cloudflare, a US-based firm that safeguards millions of websites against malicious assaults, faced an unexplained problem that hindered internet users from accessing certain client sites.

Some website owners struggled to reach their performance dashboards. The company reported that platforms like X and OpenAI saw a spike in outages concurrent with the Cloudflare issue. Down Detector.

The outage was first noted at 11:48 a.m. London time, and by 2:48 p.m., Cloudflare announced: “A fix has been implemented and we believe the issue is resolved. We are continuing to monitor the situation to ensure all services return to normal.”

A spokesperson from Cloudflare issued an apology “to our customers and the entire internet for the disruptions today.” They added, “We aim to learn from today’s events and enhance our services.”


To tackle the issue, the company turned off an encryption service known as Warp in London, stating that “users in London attempting to access the internet via Warp will face connection failures.”

Professor Alan Woodward of the Surrey Cyber Security Centre referred to Cloudflare as “the biggest company you’ve never heard of.” The firm claims to provide services that “protect websites, apps, APIs, and AI workloads while enhancing performance.”

Woodward characterized Cloudflare as a “gatekeeper,” noting its role in monitoring site traffic to protect against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, which involve malicious actors attempting to overwhelm a site with requests. It also verifies whether a user is human.

Upon identifying the fix, Cloudflare revealed that the issue stemmed from “configuration files automatically generated to manage threat traffic.”

These files expanded larger than anticipated, resulting in a failure of the software systems that direct traffic for numerous Cloudflare services.

“To clarify, there is no evidence that this was caused by an attack or malicious activity,” the spokesperson stated. “We anticipate that some Cloudflare services may experience temporary degradation as traffic spikes following this incident, but we expect all services to normalize within the next few hours.”

This incident at Cloudflare occurred less than a month after an outage at Amazon Web Services disrupted thousands of sites.

According to Woodward, “We’re beginning to realize just how few companies are integral to the internet’s infrastructure, so when one fails, the impact is immediately noticeable.”

Although the cause remains unidentified, Woodward suggested that it’s unlikely to be a cyber attack, as such a major service typically does not have a single point of failure.

Roblox Launches Age Verification Feature in Australia, Advocating Against Child Social Media Ban

Roblox maintains that Australia’s forthcoming social media restrictions for users under 16 should not extend to its platform, as it rolls out a new age verification feature designed to block minors from communicating with unknown adults.

The feature, which is being launched first in Australia, allows users to self-estimate their age using Persona age estimation technology built into the Roblox app. This utilizes the device’s camera to analyze facial features and provide a live age assessment.


This feature will become compulsory in Australia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand starting the first week of December, with plans to expand to other markets in early January.

After completing the age verification, users will be categorized into one of six age groups: under 9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, or 21 and older.

Roblox has stated that users within each age category will only be able to communicate with peers in their respective groups or similarly aged groups.

These changes were initially proposed in September and received positive feedback from Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, who has been in discussions with Roblox for several months regarding safety concerns on the platform, labeling this as a step forward in enhancing safety measures.

A recent Guardian Australia investigation revealed a week’s worth of virtual harassment and violence experienced by users who had set their profiles as eight years old while on Roblox.

Regulatory pressure is mounting for Roblox to be included in Australia’s under-16 social media ban, set to be implemented on December 10. Although there are exceptions for gaming platforms, Julie Inman-Grant stated earlier this month that eSafety agencies are reviewing chat functions and messaging in games.

“If online gameplay is the primary or sole purpose, would kids still utilize the messaging feature for communication if it were removed? Probably not,” she asserted.

During a discussion with Australian reporters regarding these impending changes, Roblox’s chief safety officer, Matt Kaufman, characterized Roblox as an “immersive gaming platform.” He explained, “I view games as a framework for social interaction. The essence lies in bringing people together and spending time with one another.”

When asked if this suggests Roblox should be classified as a social media platform subject to the ban, Kaufman responded that Roblox considers social media as a space where individuals post content to a feed for others to view.

“People return to look at the feed, which fosters a fear of missing out,” he elaborated. “It feels like a popularity contest that encapsulates social media. In contrast, Roblox is akin to two friends playing a game after school together. That’s not social media.”

“Therefore, we don’t believe that Australia’s domestic social media regulations apply to Roblox.”


When questioned if the new features were introduced to avoid being encompassed in the ban, Kaufman stated that the company is engaged in “constructive dialogue” with regulators and that these updates showcase the largest instance of a platform utilizing age verification across its entire user base.

Kaufman explained that the technology would likely be accurate within a year or two and that users who disagree with the assessment could correct it using a government ID or parental controls to establish an age. He assured that there are “strict requirements” for data deletion after age verification. Roblox states that ID images will be retained for 30 days for purposes such as fraud detection and then erased.

Users who opt not to participate in the age verification will still have access to Roblox, but they will be unable to use features like chat.

More than 150 million people globally engage with Roblox every day across 180 countries, including Australia. According to Kaufman, two-thirds of users are aged 13 and above.

Roblox Prohibits Children from Communicating with Unknown Adults Following Legal Actions

The online gaming platform Roblox is set to restrict interactions between children and adults, as well as older teenagers, starting next month. This decision comes in light of a new lawsuit that alleges the platform has been exploited by predators to groom children as young as seven.

Roblox, known for popular games like “Grow a Garden” and “Steal a Brainrot,” boasts 150 million daily players. However, it now faces legal action claiming that its system design facilitates the predation of minors.

Beginning next month, a facial age estimation feature will be implemented, allowing children to communicate with strangers only if they are within a certain age range.


Roblox claims it will be the first gaming or communication platform to enforce age verification for chats. Similar measures were enacted in the UK this summer for adult sites, ensuring that under-18s cannot access explicit content.

The company likened its new approach to the age structures found in schools, differentiating elementary, middle, and high school levels. The initiative will be launched first in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, where children will be prohibited from having private conversations with unknown adults starting next month, with a global rollout planned for early January.

Users will be classified into categories: under 9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, or 21 and older. Children will only be allowed to chat with peers in their age group or a similar age range. For instance, a child whose age is estimated at 12 can only interact with users under 16. Roblox stated that any images or videos used during the age verification process will not be stored.

This lawsuit emerges alongside growing concerns from family attorneys regarding the “systematic predation of minors” on Roblox. Florida attorney Matt Dolman mentioned that he has filed 28 lawsuits against Roblox, which has rapidly expanded during the pandemic, asserting that “the primary allegations pertain to the systematic exploitation of minors.”

One of the more recent lawsuits, filed in U.S. District Court in Nevada, involves the family of a 13-year-old girl who claims that Roblox conducted its operations “recklessly and deceptively,” facilitating her sexual exploitation.


The alleged incident involved a ‘dangerous child predator’ who posed as a child, developed an emotional connection, and manipulated the girl into providing her phone number and engaging in graphic exchanges. The manipulator then coerced her into sending explicit photos and videos.

The lawsuit claims that had Roblox implemented user screening measures prior to allowing access, the girl “would not have encountered the numerous predators that litter the platform,” and if age and identity checks had been conducted, the abuse could have been prevented.

Other recent cases in the Northern District of California include a 7-year-old girl from Philadelphia and a 12-year-old girl from Texas, both of whom were reportedly groomed and sent explicit materials by predators on Roblox.

“We are profoundly concerned about any situation that places our users at risk,” a Roblox spokesperson remarked. “The safety of our community is our highest priority.”

“This is why our policies are intentionally more stringent than those on many other platforms,” they added. “We have filters aimed at protecting younger users, prohibit image sharing, and restrict sharing personal information.

“While no system is flawless, we are continually striving to enhance our safety features and platform restrictions, having launched 145 new initiatives this year to assure parents that we prioritize their children’s safety online.”

“One platform’s safety standards alone aren’t sufficient; we genuinely hope others in the industry will adopt some of the practices we’re implementing to ensure robust protections for children and teens across the board,” Kaufman commented.

Bevan Kidron, UK founder of the 5Rights Foundation, advocating for children’s digital rights, stated: “It’s imperative for game companies to prioritize their responsibility toward children within their services.

AI firms need to be upfront about the risks linked to their technologies to avoid the pitfalls faced by tobacco and opioid companies, as stated by the CEO of Anthropic, an AI startup.

Dario Amodei, who leads the US-based company developing Claude chatbots, asserted that AI will surpass human intelligence “in most or all ways” and encouraged peers to “be candid about what you observe.”

In his interview with CBS News, Amodei expressed concerns that the current lack of transparency regarding the effects of powerful AI could mirror the failures of tobacco and opioid companies that neglected to acknowledge the health dangers associated with their products.


“You could find yourself in a situation similar to that of tobacco or opioid companies, who were aware of the dangers but chose not to discuss them, nor did they take preventive measures,” he remarked.

The discussion of “AI for good” resonated at the Cop30 conference in Belem, Brazil, where advocates claim AI has the potential to lower emissions through various efficiencies that could impact multiple aspects of daily life, including food, transportation, and energy—major contributors to environmental pollution.


Recently, a coalition of organizations, UN agencies, and the Brazilian government announced the establishment of the AI Climate Institute, a new global initiative aimed at leveraging AI as a tool for empowerment to assist developing nations in addressing environmental issues.

Proponents assert that, over time, this initiative will educate countries on utilizing AI in various ways to curb emissions, including enhancing public transportation, streamlining agricultural systems, and adjusting energy grids to facilitate the timely integration of renewable energy.

Forecasting weather patterns, including the mapping of impending climate crises like floods and wildfires, could also be refined through this approach, remarked Maria João Souza, executive director of Climate Change AI, one of the organizations involved in the initiative.

While AI may indeed enhance efficiency and lower emissions, these same technologies can be leveraged to optimize fossil fuel extraction as well. A recent report by Wood Mackenzie estimated that AI could potentially unlock an additional trillion barrels of oil. Such a scenario, if accepted by energy markets, would obliterate any chances of preventing severe climate change.

Data Breach Exposes Personal Information of Tate Gallery Job Seekers

The Guardian has revealed that personal information from job applicants at the Tate has been exposed online, compromising addresses, salaries, and phone numbers of examiners.

These extensive records, running hundreds of pages, were shared on a site not affiliated with the government-supported organization managing London’s Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate St Ives in Cornwall, and Tate Liverpool.

The leaked data encompasses details like the current employers and educational background of applicants related to the Tate’s Website Developer Search in October 2023, affecting 111 individuals. While names are undisclosed, referees’ phone numbers and personal email addresses might be included. It remains unclear how long this information has been available online.

Max Kohler, a 29-year-old software developer, learned his data had been compromised after one of his application reviewers received an email from an unfamiliar source who accessed the online data dump.

Kohler found that the breach contained his last paycheck, current employer’s name, other reviewers’ names, email addresses, home addresses, and extensive responses to job interview questions.

“I feel extremely disappointed and disheartened,” he stated. “You dedicate time filling out sensitive information like your previous salary and home address, yet they fail to secure it properly and allow it to be publicly accessible.”

“They should publicly address this issue, provide an apology, and clarify how this happened, along with actions to prevent future occurrences. It likely stems from inadequate staff training or procedural oversights.”

Reported incidents of data security breaches to the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) continue to rise. Over 2,000 incidents were reported quarterly in 2022, increasing to over 3,200 between April and June of this year.

Kate Brimstead, a partner at Shoesmith law firm and an authority on data privacy, information law, and cybersecurity, commented: “Breaches do not always have to be intentional. While ransomware attacks attract significant attention, the scale of current breaches is substantial.” Errors can often contribute to these incidents, highlighting the necessity for robust checks and procedures in daily operations. “Managing our data can be tedious, but it remains crucial,” she added.

The ICO emphasized that organizations must report a personal data breach to them within 72 hours of being aware, unless there is no risk to individuals’ rights and freedoms. If an organization decides not to report, they should maintain a record of the breach and justify their decision if needed.

Father of Teenager Killed Over Social Media Trusts Ofcom No More

Molly Russell’s father, the British teenager who tragically took her life after encountering harmful online material, has expressed his lack of confidence in efforts to secure a safer internet for children. He is advocating for a leadership change at Britain’s communications regulatory body.

Ian Russell, whose daughter Molly was only 14 when she died in 2017, criticized Ofcom for its “repeated” failure to grasp the urgency of safeguarding under-18s online and for not enforcing new digital regulations effectively.

“I’ve lost faith in Ofcom’s current leadership,” he shared with the Guardian. “They have consistently shown a lack of urgency regarding this mission and have not been willing to use their authority adequately.”

Mr. Russell’s remarks coincided with a letter from technology secretary Liz Kendall to Ofcom, expressing her “deep concern” over the gradual progress of the Online Safety Act (OSA), a groundbreaking law that lays out safety regulations for social media, search engines, and video platforms.

After his daughter’s death, Mr. Russell became a prominent advocate for internet safety and raised flags with Ofcom chief executive Melanie Dawes last year regarding online suicide forums accessible to UK users.

Ofcom opened an investigation into these forums after acquiring new regulatory authority under the OSA, and the site voluntarily restricted access to UK users.

However, Mr. Russell noted that the investigation seemed to be “stalled” until regulators intensified their scrutiny this month when it was revealed that UK users could still access the forums via undiscovered “mirror sites.”

“If Ofcom can’t manage something this clear-cut, it raises questions about their competence in tackling other issues,” Mr. Russell stated.

In response, Ofcom assured Mr. Russell that they were continuously monitoring geo-blocked sites and indicated that a new mirror site had only recently come to their attention.

Mr. Russell voiced his agreement with Mr. Kendall’s frustrations over the slow implementation of additional components of the OSA, particularly stricter regulations for the most influential online platforms. Ofcom attributed the delays to a legal challenge from the Wikimedia Foundation, the organization that supports Wikipedia.

The regulator emphasized its “utmost respect” for bereaved families and cited achievements under its stewardship, such as initiating age verification on pornography websites and combating child sexual abuse content.

“We are working diligently to push technology firms to ensure safer online experiences for children and adults in the UK. While progress is ongoing, meaningful changes are occurring,” a spokesperson commented.

The Molly Rose Foundation, established by Molly’s family, has reached out to the UK government urging ministers to broaden legal mandates for public servant transparency to include tech companies.

In their letter, they requested Victims’ Minister Alex Davies-Jones to expand the Public Powers (Accountability) Bill, which introduces a “duty of honesty” for public officials.

This bill was prompted by critiques regarding the police’s evidence handling during the Hillsborough investigation, mandating that public entities proactively assist inquiries, including those by coroner’s courts, without safeguarding their own interests.

The foundation believes that imposing similar transparency requirements on companies regulated by the OSA would aid in preserving evidence in cases of deaths possibly linked to social media.

The inquest into Molly’s passing was postponed due to a conflict surrounding evidence presentation.

“This change fundamentally shifts the dynamic between tech companies and their victims, imposing a requirement for transparency and promptness in legal responses,” the letter asserted.

Recent legislative changes have granted coroners enhanced authority under the OSA to request social media usage evidence from tech companies and prohibit them from destroying sensitive data. However, the letter’s signatories contend that stricter measures are necessary.

More than 40 individuals, including members of Survivors for Online Safety and Meta whistleblower Arturo Bejar, have signed the letter.

A government spokesperson indicated that the legal adjustments empower coroners to request further data from tech firms.

“The Online Safety Act will aid coroners in their inquests and assist families in seeking the truth by mandating companies to fully disclose data when there’s a suspected link between a child’s death and social media use,” a spokesperson stated.

“As pledged in our manifesto, we’ve strengthened this by equipping coroners with the authority to mandate data preservation for inquest support. We are committed to taking action and collaborating with families and advocates to ensure protection for families and children.”

British Firms Poised to Seize a Major Share of the AI Chip Market

TThe UK holds a unique and advantageous position to contribute significantly in the new era of artificial intelligence, provided it seizes the chance to establish the production of millions of computer chips, an area that is often misunderstood.

AI technology demands a vast quantity of chips, and a collaborative national initiative could fulfill up to 5% of the global requirement.

Our legacy in chip design is unparalleled, beginning with the first general-purpose electronic computer, the initial electronic memory, and the first parallel computing system. Presently, Arm, based in Cambridge, is a prominent player that designs over 90% of the chips found in smartphones and tablets worldwide.

Given this background, it is certainly plausible that British companies can capture a notable share of the AI chip market. A target of 5% is both conservative and achievable. Our distinguished universities, a flourishing foundational AI company like DeepMind, and a strong innovation ecosystem equip the UK with the tangible resources necessary to compete.

The potential gains are tremendous. The global market for AI chips is expected to soar to $700 billion (£620 billion) annually by 2033, surpassing the entire current semiconductor market. Achieving that 5% share would translate to an influx of $35 billion in new revenue and the creation of thousands of high-paying jobs.

AI is set to transform not only the economy but also societal structures and security. Unfortunately, many do not grasp where its true value and strategic influence lie.

In this contemporary gold rush, real wealth is accessible not only to those mining digital gold but also to those who provide the tools for the task. I witnessed this firsthand from 1997 to 2006 when Gordon Moore and Andy Grove helped establish Intel’s board and founded the company in California. They set the groundwork for the first technology revolution, much like Nvidia is doing today on an even larger scale.

UK engineers, intellects, businesses, and investors excel in this domain. However, government collaboration is crucial.

While consumers are captivated by the generative marvels of OpenAI, the true market winner is Nvidia, the entity that provides the advanced chips facilitating such achievements. OpenAI’s estimated value stands at merely 1/10th that of Nvidia. AMD, a semiconductor design company, holds a distant second place, while emerging firms like Cerebras and TenTrent strive for a share of the market.

All AI models and applications, ranging from autonomous robots to real-time translation services, depend heavily on advancements in chip technology. Chips are the new oil of the digital economy, dictating the speed and efficiency with which future applications can be developed. Currently, the only major players in the AI field seeing true profitability are chip manufacturers.

Concerns have arisen that China may commoditize AI chips similar to its approach with solar technology, leading to dramatic price fluctuations and undercutting existing companies. The situation is more complex. U.S. export controls will restrict China’s access to advanced chip manufacturing technology for the next decade, significantly curtailing its capacity to dominate the high-end AI chip arena. This reality positions the U.S. as a key player and creates a substantial opportunity for its closest ally, the UK, which excels in chip design.

The UK has already birthed several companies in this sector, such as Fractile, Flux, and Oriole. However, we lack the necessary scale to capitalize on the opportunity. Instead of competing with Nvidia in data center computing, we should focus on specialized applications that usher in innovation, like robotics, factory automation, medical devices, and autonomous vehicles.

These domains offer ample opportunities for inventive architectures and new competition.

Too frequently, Britain’s industrial strategy is impeded by national insecurity and a lack of confidence. This must change. Primarily, governments must advocate decisively for our intent to excel in AI chips.

Secondly, we should aim to double our chip design workforce from the current 12,000 within a decade and encourage more talented individuals to pursue electrical engineering and computer science through generous scholarships. A target of 1,500 new students each year is achievable. Universities must offer relevant courses, and governments need to enhance financial support.

Thirdly, the UK should fully utilize its investment instruments: the Sovereign AI Fund, the British Business Bank, the National Wealth Fund, and the Ministry of Defence’s initiatives to ‘buy British’.

Fourthly, the UK-US strategic partnership must serve as a foundation for greater collaboration with leading US chip manufacturers and facilitate access to their state-of-the-art sub-3 nanometer manufacturing technologies. Collaborating with our U.S. partners to develop a robust supply chain and innovation pipeline is essential.

If the UK commits fully, the emerging age of AI could be characterized not only by code but also by silicon, leaving a distinctly British legacy.

As Synthetic Music Gains Popularity, AI Dominates Billboard and Spotify Charts

This week, three songs generated by artificial intelligence have reached the top of music charts, securing spots at the pinnacle of both Spotify and Billboard rankings.

Walk My Walk made waves with Breaking Rust’s “Livin’ on Borrowed Time” leading the U.S. “Viral 50” chart, which highlights the “most viral songs” daily on Spotify. The anti-immigrant anthem “We Say No, No, No to an Asylum Center” by JW “Broken Veteran” also soared to the top of Spotify’s global viral chart during this timeframe. Additionally, “Breaking Rust” landed in the top five globally.

The lyrics of “Walk My Walk” include the line, “If you don’t like the way I talk, you can kick a rock,” directly addressing critics of AI-generated music.

Shortly after climbing the charts, the Dutch song vanished from Spotify and YouTube, along with all other tracks by Broken Veteran. Spotify told Dutch outlet NU.nl that it had not removed the music and that the rights holder was responsible. Broken Veteran expressed confusion over the disappearance, stating he is investigating and hopes for a resolution soon.

Opting to remain unnamed, Broken Veteran shared with the Guardian via email that he views AI as “just another tool for expression,” especially for individuals like himself who have important messages but lack formal musical training. He emphasized that the technology has “democratized music production” and clarified that his song critiques government policies, not immigrants.

For three weeks, “Walk My Walk” has led Billboard’s Country Digital Song Sales chart, which tracks downloads and digital purchases. This chart is considered minor compared to Billboard’s broader metrics like “Hot Country Songs” and “Top Country Albums.” Breaking Rust has yet to respond to media inquiries.

AI-Generated Music’s Growing Presence

These three tracks exemplify the surge of AI-generated music flooding streaming services. A recent study by Deezer reveals that roughly 50,000 AI-generated songs are uploaded daily, representing 34% of all music submissions.

“Walk My Walk” and “We Say No, No, No to an Asylum Center” are not the first AI tracks to gain popularity. Earlier in the summer, an AI-produced song by a group named Velvet Sundown achieved over 1 million streams on Spotify, which one of its members later referred to as “art quackery.”

Ed Newton Rex, a musician and founder of a nonprofit aiming to ensure fair data training for generative AI companies, notes that the high volume of AI-generated songs available online is a significant factor behind the emergence of AI hits.

“This reflects a trend of rapidly growing interest in AI music, driven primarily by the volume of content,” he explained. “Daily, we see 50,000 new songs competing with human artists, marking the rise of a new, highly scalable competitor built through exploitation.”

AI music quality has noticeably improved since its early days. In a survey conducted as part of the study, Deezer found that 97% of the 9,000 participants from eight countries could not differentiate between AI-generated music and human-created compositions.

“This is undeniable. It’s now fairly safe to say that the top-tier AI music is indistinguishable from human-composed tracks,” Newton-Rex stated.

Emerging Distribution Models for AI-Generated Music

The success of AI-generated tracks on Spotify transcends mere quality. Much like various domains within the AI economy, numerous tools and platforms facilitate the distribution of AI music, along with user sub-communities eager to share strategies for navigating the system.

Jack Righteous, a blogger focused on AI content creation, has highlighted how his followers can generate a “passive income stream” through a music distribution service called DistroKid, which allocates royalty fees to creators whenever an AI track is streamed on platforms like YouTube, Spotify, or TikTok.

DistroKid is part of a wider ecosystem of online music distribution services, including Amuse, Landr, and CD Baby, all helping creators publish their music on major platforms like YouTube and Spotify. These services have varying policies regarding AI-generated content, with blogs like noting that DistroKid is “more forgiving.” This includes some hits from Breaking Rust such as “Livin’ on Borrowed Time” and “Resilient,” which appear to be distributed by DistroKid.

“In essence, most AI music you encounter isn’t being handled by a legitimate label. It’s crafted by individuals in their personal spaces and uploaded to distribution platforms,” said Chris Dalla Riva, author of “Unknown Territory,” which delves into the data behind music virality.

When approached for comments, Spotify cited their policy regarding AI-generated tracks.

AI Firm Claims to Have Foiled Cyberattack Campaign Backed by Chinese State

Top AI firms assert that they have disrupted a Chinese-supported “cyber espionage operation” capable of breaching financial institutions and government bodies with minimal human oversight.

US-based Anthropic revealed that its coding tool, Claude Code, was “utilized” by a state-backed Chinese group in September to target 30 organizations globally, leading to “multiple successful intrusions.”

In a recent blog post, the company described this as a “significant escalation” compared to earlier AI-driven attacks it had monitored. On Thursday, it was noted that Claude executed 80-90% of the operations autonomously, with little to no human involvement.

“This attacker achieved what we believe to be the first documented instance of a large-scale cyber attack executed without human intervention,” the report states.

Anthropic did not disclose the specific financial institutions or government entities targeted or the exact outcomes of the intrusions but confirmed that the attackers accessed the internal data of the victims.

Claude also acknowledged making numerous errors during the attack, at times fabricating details about its targets and claiming to have “uncovered” information that was actually available to the public.

Policymakers and experts expressed concerns about the implications of these findings, indicating that certain AI systems, like Claude, have developed the capability to operate independently for prolonged periods.

“Wake up. If we don’t prioritize AI regulation nationally starting tomorrow, this may lead to our downfall sooner than we think,” stated U.S. Senator Chris Murphy. I wrote in response to these findings.

“AI systems can now execute tasks that once required skilled human operators,” remarked Fred Heiding, a researcher at Harvard’s Defense, Emerging Technologies, and Strategy Program.

“My research has delved into how AI systems increasingly automate portions of the cyber kill chain each year… It’s becoming significantly easier for attackers to inflict real damage. AI companies are not assuming enough accountability.”

Other cybersecurity experts expressed skepticism, citing exaggerated claims regarding AI-driven cyberattacks in recent years. A report on a 2023 “password cracker” demonstrated comparable effectiveness to traditional methods, suggesting that Anthropic may be overhyping AI’s capabilities.

“In my view, Anthropic is presenting advanced automation and nothing more,” stated independent cybersecurity expert Michal “Rizik” Wozniak. “There’s code generation involved, but it’s not ‘intelligence’; it’s merely enhanced copy and paste.”

Wozniak further commented that Anthropic’s announcement diverts attention from broader cybersecurity issues, noting that businesses and governments are adopting “complex and poorly understood” AI tools without fully grasping them, thereby exposing themselves to vulnerabilities. He emphasized that the true threat lies with cybercriminals and insufficient cybersecurity measures.

Like all leading AI companies, Anthropic has implemented safeguards to prevent its models from engaging in cyberattacks or causing harm generally. However, hackers managed to circumvent these safety measures by instructing Claude to role-play as a “legitimate cybersecurity company employee” conducting assessments, as noted in the report.

“Anthropic is valued at around $180 billion, yet they can’t seem to ensure their tools aren’t easily manipulated by tactics a 13-year-old might use to prank call someone,” Wozniak remarked.

Marius Hovhan, founder of Apollo Research, which assesses the security of AI models, remarked that the attack signifies what could transpire as capabilities advance.

“I don’t believe society is sufficiently prepared for the rapid changes in AI and cyber capabilities,” he stated. “We expect many more such incidents in the coming years, potentially with even greater consequences.”

Medical professionals have created an AI tool capable of decreasing wasted efforts in organ transplants by 60%.

Across the globe, thousands of patients await potentially life-saving organ donations, with more individuals on the waiting list than available organs.

Recently, the scope of liver transplants has broadened to include donors who have passed away from cardiac arrest. However, in around half of the cases involving donations after cardiovascular death (DCD), the transplant is ultimately called off.

This occurs because the duration from the removal of life support to the moment of death must not exceed 45 minutes. Surgeons frequently decline to proceed with a liver transplant if the donor does not pass away within the timeframe necessary to maintain organ viability, which increases complications for recipients.

Now, a team of doctors, scientists, and researchers at Stanford University has developed a machine learning model that forecasts whether a donor is likely to pass away before the organ can be transplanted.

This AI tool has surpassed leading surgeons, cutting down the rate of wasted procurements—where preparation for a transplant begins but the donor dies too late—by 60%.

“By pinpointing when an organ is likely to be viable before initiating surgical preparations, this model could enhance the efficiency of the transplant process,” stated Dr. Kazunari Sasaki, a clinical professor of abdominal transplantation and the study’s senior author.

“It also has the capability to make organ transplants accessible to a greater number of candidates in need.”

EU Launches Investigation into Google’s ‘Demotion’ of News Media Commercial Content

The European Union has initiated an investigation into Google Search amid worries that the US tech giant may be “downgrading” commercial content from news media platforms.

The enforcement body of the bloc announced this move after monitoring revealed that various content produced in collaboration with advertisers and sponsors was ranked so low by Google that it essentially vanished from search results.

Officials from the European Commission indicated that this potentially unfair “loss of visibility and revenue” for media owners could stem from Google’s anti-spam policies.

According to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which governs competition within the tech sector, Google is required to provide “fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory conditions for access to publishers’ websites in Google Search”.

Committee officials clarified that the investigation does not pertain to the overall indexing of newspapers or Google search coverage but focuses specifically on commercial content supplied by third parties.

Media collaborations with firms selling products and services, from seasonal items to apparel, are described as “normal business practices in the offline world” and should be supported in equitable online ecosystems like Google, according to the officials.

For instance, a newspaper may partner with Nike to offer discounts, but evidence suggested that Google Search “demoted the newspaper’s subdomains to the extent that users could no longer access them.” This situation would also negatively impact newspapers.

“We are concerned that Google’s policies do not facilitate fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory treatment of news publishers in search results,” stated Teresa Rivera, European Commission vice-president for clean, fair, and competitive transition policy.

Deception, Misinformation, and AI: A New Era of Election Influence in US Politics

TThe New York mayoral election will likely be remembered not just for the impressive win of the young democratic socialists but also for a significant trend that could influence future campaigns: the rise of AI-generated campaign videos.

Andrew Cuomo, who lost last week to Zoran Mamdani, has notably engaged in the distribution of deepfake videos featuring his opponent, with one such video alleging racism against him.

Although AI has been utilized in political campaigns before—primarily for algorithms that target voters or create policy ideas—its evolution has seen the creation of sometimes misleading imagery and videos.

“What was particularly innovative this election cycle was the deployment of generative AI to produce content directly for voters,” stated New York State Representative Alex Boas, who advocates for regulations governing AI use.

“Whether it was the Cuomo team or not? Creating a housing plan with ChatGPT or AI-generated video ads targeting voters felt revolutionary during the 2025 campaign cycle, marking an unprecedented approach.”

Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who exited the race in September, also leveraged AI, utilizing it to generate a robocall and producing a feature in The New Yorker where he converses in Mandarin, Urdu, and Yiddish. An AI video depicted a dystopian view of New York and aimed critiques at Mamdani.

In a controversial move, Mr. Cuomo faced allegations of racism and Islamophobia after his campaign shared a video depicting a fictitious Mamdani eating rice with his fingers and included an unrelated portrayal of a black man shoplifting. The campaign also featured a black individual in a purple suit appearing to endorse sex trafficking, which was later deleted under the pretext of an error.

Boas, who is campaigning for a House seat, remarked that many AI-generated ads from the recent election cycle may have crossed into what could be deemed bigoted territories.

“We need to assess if this is due to algorithms perpetuating stereotypes from their training data, or if it’s simply easier to manipulate content digitally without the need to coordinate specific actions with actors,” Boas indicated.

“Digital creation simplifies the production of content that might be frowned upon by polite society,” he added.

In New York, campaigns are mandated to label AI-generated ads, but several—including one from Mr. Cuomo—failed to do so. The New York State Board of Elections oversees potential violations, but Boas pointed out that campaigns might risk penalties as the costs could be outweighed by the gains from winning.

“There will likely be campaigns willing to take that risk: if they win, the post-election fines become irrelevant,” Boas stated. “We need an effective enforcement mechanism that can intervene rapidly before elections to minimize damage, rather than simply impose penalties afterward.”

Robert Wiseman, co-director of Public Citizen, a nonprofit that has supported various AI regulations nationwide, noted that attempting to deceive the public is illegal in more than half of states and that campaigns must label AI-generated materials as such. However, he cautioned that the regulation of AI in political contexts remains a critical issue.

“Deception has historically been part of politics, but the implications of AI-generated misinformation are particularly concerning,” Wiseman explained.


“When audiences are shown a convincingly authentic video of someone making a statement, it becomes incredibly challenging for that individual to refute it, essentially forcing them to challenge viewers’ perceptions.”

AI technology can now generate convincing videos, but execution weaknesses still exist. A “Zoran Halloween Special” video released by Cuomo was clearly labeled as AI-generated yet showcased a poorly rendered image of Mamdani with mismatched audio and nonsensical dialogue.

With midterm elections on the horizon and the 2028 presidential campaign approaching, AI-generated political videos are poised to become a fixture in the landscape.

At the national level, this trend is already evident. Elon Musk shared an AI-generated video where Kamala Harris appeared to assert her role as a de facto presidential candidate and claimed she “knows nothing about running a country.”

While states are advancing in their efforts to regulate AI’s role in elections, there seems to be a lack of willingness to implement such measures at the federal level.

During the No King protests in October, Donald Trump released an AI video showcasing him in a fighter jet, dropping brown liquid on protestors, among his most recent AI content.

With President Trump’s evident support for this medium, it appears unlikely that Republicans will seek to impose restrictions on AI anytime soon.

I also enjoyed Gitaroo Man, a whimsical narrative about a guitar hero, and of course, Guitar Hero, where I was determined to master every song on Expert difficulty. Although Guitar Hero is often seen as a social game, I spent many hours practicing alone in a cupboard under the stairs of a less-than-ideal house in Bournemouth, perfecting “More Than a Feeling” after 30 attempts.

Years later, while living in Japan, I stumbled upon From Software’s Demon’s Souls. The game’s brutal difficulty seemed designed to make players quit. A mere three steps in any level could lead to instant death at the hands of a skeleton or a venomous swamp creature. Yet, I sensed something captivating beneath all this hardship. Indeed, Demon’s Souls and its successor Dark Souls gained immense popularity, birthing a notoriously challenging genre. The charm of these games lies in the need for a commitment to mastering them. Your skills matter little unless you’re willing to share insights and cooperate with others.

My persistence has largely benefited me throughout my life. This tenacity translates to life and career challenges, providing the drive not to give up. I once made a ridiculous commitment to learn complex fingerpicking patterns for specific guitar songs. write a book. However, gaming often captivates me when I should be focusing on other responsibilities.

A recent example for me was Baby Steps, an incredibly challenging and amusing game where you guide the world’s biggest loser up a mountain. In this game, one wrong move can result in losing hours of hard-earned progress. One night, I found myself stuck in a sandcastle for four hours, slipping down the same sandy slope repeatedly while my kids expressed their annoyance at being asked to come in and witness my plight. After what felt like an eternity, I finally emerged from the sand trap at 1 a.m., adrenaline surging, making sleep impossible for another hour.

The wise choice would have been to set the controller down. Baby Steps has a way of teasing players into pressing on. The brave thing to do is to give up. One of the most notorious challenges is a winding ascent up a steep rock face called Manbreaker, complete with a swirling staircase nearby.

Another game I’ve spent considerable time with this year is Hollow Knight: Silksong. This beautifully crafted exploration action game straddles the line between playful and brutally challenging. It features notoriously tough bosses that can’t be avoided, each likely requiring hours of practice. One such boss, the Last Judge, swings a flaming censer that releases plumes of lethal fire. To make matters worse, the route back to that room is rife with threats: flying drill-headed bugs, perilous drops, and relentless guards. By the time you face the Last Judge, your nerves are frayed. Nonetheless, this only fueled my determination to conquer it.

Developers face a delicate balancing act. Logically, the aim should be to engage players, not dishearten them. For a time, the trend shifted towards creating easy-to-navigate open-world games that never impede progress. However, Dark Souls demonstrated the enduring market for players like me who appreciate a good challenge. I am irresistibly drawn to mastering pursuits that are inherently trivial.

Perhaps mastery is the crux of the matter. While mastery in life is capricious, and uncertainties can strike at any moment, video games allow for the anticipation of challenges. Here, with perseverance, you can always triumph.

I’m quite enjoying Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, a spinoff from the Zelda series. It explores what Princess Zelda was up to while time-traveling through Hyrule’s history, and it turns out, she was engaging with numerous suitors. This game centers on combat, whisking players through the battlefields of ancient Hyrule, filled with various monsters, unleashing spectacular attacks that light up the screen, from Zelda’s light magic to Minel’s mechanical creations. The aesthetic feels distinct from Zelda, leaning more towards a cinematic action experience while filling in the historical gaps concerning Hyrule, granting the princess a leading role.

Meta Faces Potential Multi-Million Dollar Fine for Ignoring Content Agreement in Australia

Meta and various tech firms that decline to enter into content agreements with Australian news organizations could face hefty multimillion-dollar penalties, as Labor’s proposed media bargaining initiative aims to link fines to the local revenues of major platforms.

New regulations will apply to large social media and search platforms generating at least $250 million in Australian revenue, regardless of whether they distribute news content, as per recent disclosures from Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino.

Labor has shown a slow response in formulating a news bargaining incentive plan due to apprehensions about potential backlash from US President Donald Trump regarding his approach to US-based platforms.


Initially announced in December 2024, the implementation date remains uncertain, pending a month-long public consultation by the government.

These new regulations are intended to compel payments from platforms which have chosen to withdraw from the news media bargaining framework established during Prime Minister Morrison’s administration, a structure that has enabled publishers like Guardian Australia to secure around 30 agreements valued at an estimated $200 million to $250 million annually.

The decline in advertising revenue has significantly affected major media operators like News Corp and Nine and Seven West Media, leading to layoffs and cost reductions, while digital giants such as Google and Facebook’s parent companies continue to enjoy substantial profits.

Meta, which owns platforms like Facebook and Instagram, has declined to enter into new contracts under the existing terms, whereas Google has willingly renewed some contracts with publishers, albeit at lower payment rates.

Tech firms can bypass existing arrangements by entirely removing news content from their platforms, a move made by Meta in Canada in 2023.

Labor’s new incentive initiative aims to assist news publishers in obtaining funding even from platforms that have opted out of the news bargaining system and to support smaller publishers that depend heavily on digital platforms for content distribution.

A new discussion paper outlines that if a tech platform refuses to engage in a content agreement, it will be required to pay either a portion of the gross revenue produced in Australia or just the revenue stemming from digital advertising. This penalty would be enforced at the group level and would not extend to smaller subsidiary brands owned by larger corporations.

The Treasury has indicated support for a $250 million annual income threshold for this new framework and suggested that the government use the total group income generated in Australia as the primary benchmark for payments.

Preliminary analyses estimate the worth of existing agreements with publishers is approximately equivalent to 1.5% of the revenue generated by relevant platforms in Australia. The new fines could reach 2.25% of revenue to facilitate trading under existing laws. According to the proposed structure of the new incentives, a portion of eligible expenses might be utilized to decrease penalty amounts.

Companies will need to self-evaluate their liabilities under these regulations, but the legislation will depend on a broad definition of social media and search.

Despite not having a registered business account in Australia, Facebook’s Australian subsidiary announced in April that it generated $1.46 billion in revenue for the year ending December 31, an increase from $1.34 billion the previous year, despite declining advertising markets.

President Trump has previously threatened to impose significant trade tariffs on countries perceived to treat American firms unfairly. His former confidant and billionaire advisor, Elon Musk, is the owner of Platform X.

Nonetheless, Labor is proceeding with the introduction of new penalties following Anthony Albanese’s productive meeting at the White House last month.

Former chairman of the competition watchdog, Rod Sims, has expressed support for Labor’s proposed penalty system, stating that Google and Facebook are profiting from content created by Australian news organizations and that failing to bolster journalism would enable lower-quality sources to flourish.

Sims had previously estimated that commercial contracts established under these terms amounted to $1 billion over a four-year period.

The government will continue consultations regarding the incentive plan until December 19, after which it will finalize its strategy in 2026.

China Bans Two Popular LGBTQ+ Dating Apps from Apple and Android Stores

Two of the most popular gay dating applications in China have been removed from the country’s app stores, sparking concerns about increased repression of the LGBT community.

As of Tuesday, Blued and Finka were no longer accessible on Apple’s app store and certain Android platforms. Users who have previously downloaded the applications seem to still have access to them.

Both applications remain available for download from their official websites, and no official statement has been made regarding their removal.

In a statement to Wired, Apple remarked: “We adhere to the laws of the nations in which we operate. Following directives from the Cyberspace Administration of China, these two apps have been removed solely from our China storefront.”

Apple operates a distinct app store in China, in compliance with local regulations. Popular applications such as Facebook, Instagram, and other Western social media platforms are inaccessible to Chinese users. Furthermore, international dating apps like Grindr and Tinder are also blocked.

Blued, which was established in China in 2012, is the nation’s most popular dating app for gay men, boasting over 40 million registered users globally. Despite diversifying into live streaming and other services in recent years, it primarily remains an app catered to gay men.

The parent company of Blued acquired Finka in 2020.

Although homosexuality is legal in China, the public expression of LGBT identities has become increasingly suppressed after years of progressive changes. LGBT civil society organizations have been forced to shut down, and China’s largest Pride event, Shanghai Pride, was canceled in 2020. In September, a horror film featuring a gay couple was modified digitally for its release in China.

The founder of an LGBT community organization, who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons, expressed being “very shocked” at the removal of Blued and Finka from app stores.

“In recent years, the space for sexual minorities has been diminishing…but I was unprepared for the news that online spaces are also disappearing,” he stated.

“Do apps like Blued not aid in fostering social stability and harmony? Why remove them from app stores? I find it challenging to grasp the reasoning behind this,” he continued.

The reason for the app removals and their permanence remains unclear, but internet users have rapidly expressed their concerns.

One WeChat user remarked that Blued “helped countless individuals realize they were not alone, bringing a marginalized group into focus.”

The Cyberspace Administration of China was not available for comment.

German Court Rules ChatGPT Violates Copyright Law by ‘Learning’ from Song Lyrics

A court in Munich has determined that OpenAI’s ChatGPT breached German copyright laws by utilizing popular songs from renowned artists to train its language model, which advocates for the creative industry have labeled a pivotal ruling for Europe.

The Munich District Court supported the German music copyright association GEMA, stating that ChatGPT gathered protected lyrics from well-known musicians to “learn” them.

GEMA, an organization that oversees the rights of composers, lyricists, and music publishers with around 100,000 members, initiated legal action against OpenAI in November 2024.

This case was perceived as a significant test for Europe in its efforts to prevent AI from harvesting creative works. OpenAI has the option to appeal the verdict.


ChatGPT lets users pose inquiries and issue commands to a chatbot, which replies with text that mimics human language patterns. The foundational model of ChatGPT is trained on widely accessible data.

The lawsuit focused on nine of the most iconic German hits from recent decades, which ChatGPT employed to refine its language skills.

This included Herbert Groenemeyer’s 1984 synthpop hit manners (male), and Helen Fischer’s Atemlos Durchi die Nacht (Breathless Through the Night), which became the unofficial anthem for the German team during the 2014 World Cup.

The judge ruled that OpenAI must pay undisclosed damages for unauthorized use of copyrighted materials.

Kai Welp, GEMA’s general counsel, mentioned that GEMA is now looking to negotiate with OpenAI about compensating rights holders.

The San Francisco-based company, co-founded by Sam Altman and Elon Musk, argued that its language learning model utilizes the entire training set rather than retaining or copying specific songs, as stated by the Munich court.

OpenAI contended that since the outputs are created in response to user prompts, the users bear legal responsibility, an argument the court dismissed.

GEMA celebrated the ruling as “Europe’s first groundbreaking AI decision,” indicating that it might have ramifications for other creative works.

Tobias Holzmuller, the company’s CEO, remarked that the verdict demonstrates that “the internet is not a self-service store, and human creative output is not a free template.”

“Today, we have established a precedent to safeguard and clarify the rights of authors. Even AI tool operators like ChatGPT are required to comply with copyright laws. We have successfully defended the livelihood of music creators today.”

The Berlin law firm Laue, representing GEMA, stated that the court’s ruling “creates a significant precedent for the protection of creative works and conveys a clear message to the global tech industry,” while providing “legal certainty for creators, music publishers, and platforms across Europe.”


The ruling is expected to have ramifications extending beyond Germany as a legal precedent.

The German Journalists Association also praised the decision as a “historic triumph for copyright law.”

OpenAI responded that it would contemplate an appeal. “We disagree with the ruling and are evaluating our next actions.” The statement continued, “This ruling pertains to a limited set of lyrics and does not affect the millions of users, companies, and developers in Germany who utilize our technology every day.”

Furthermore, “We respect the rights of creators and content owners and are engaged in constructive discussions with various organizations globally that can also take advantage of this technology.”

OpenAI is currently facing lawsuits in the U.S. from authors and media organizations alleging that ChatGPT was trained on their copyrighted materials without consent.

Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine Secure Voice Agreement with AI Firm

Academy Award-winning actors Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine have entered into an agreement with AI audio firm Eleven Labs.

The New York-based company is now authorized to produce AI-generated voice replicas as part of its initiative to tackle “significant ethical challenges” in the intersection of artificial intelligence and Hollywood.


McConaughey, who has also invested in the company and collaborated with them since 2022, will allow Eleven Labs to produce a Spanish audio version of his newsletter “Lyrics of Livin'” using his voice.

In a statement, the Dallas Buyers Club star expressed his admiration for Eleven Labs and hoped this collaboration would enable him to “reach and connect with an even broader audience.”

Eleven Labs is launching the Iconic Voices Marketplace, allowing brands to collaborate and utilize officially licensed celebrity voices for AI-generated applications. Caine’s new agreement includes his iconic voice in this lineup.

“For years, I have lent my voice to stories that inspire people—tales of bravery, ingenuity, and the human experience,” Caine stated. “Now, I am helping others to discover their voice. With Eleven Labs, I can save and share everyone’s voice, not just mine.”

He further mentioned that the company “leverages innovation to celebrate humanity, not to replace it,” asserting that it “does not replace voices, it amplifies them.”


Caine has also revealed plans to return from retirement to co-star with Vin Diesel in The Last Witch Hunter 2.

Other voices featured in the marketplace include legendary Hollywood figures like John Wayne, Rock Hudson, and Judy Garland, alongside contemporary stars such as Liza Minnelli and Art Garfunkel. The list also encompasses notable figures like Amelia Earhart, Babe Ruth, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Maya Angelou, and Alan Turing.

Recently, Eleven Labs was valued at approximately $6.6 billion.

This news follows a series of celebrity and AI partnership agreements, including various celebrities who have consented to allow Meta to utilize their voices. Last year, the company released a list that featured Judi Dench, John Cena, and Kristen Bell.

Other stars, including Ashton Kutcher and Leonardo DiCaprio, have also made investments in AI enterprises.

Tech Firms Collaborate with UK Child Safety Agency to Evaluate AI Tool for Generating Abuse Images

Under a new UK law, tech companies and child protection agencies will be granted the authority to test if artificial intelligence tools can create images of child abuse.

This announcement follows reports from a safety watchdog highlighting instances of child sexual abuse generated by AI. The number of cases surged from 199 in 2024 to 426 in 2025.

With these changes, the government will empower selected AI firms and child safety organizations to analyze AI models, including the tech behind chatbots like ChatGPT and image-generating devices such as Google’s Veo 3, to ensure measures are in place to prevent the creation of child sexual abuse images.

Kanishka Narayan, the Minister of State for AI and Online Safety, emphasized that this initiative is “ultimately to deter abuse before it happens,” stating, “Experts can now identify risks in AI models sooner, under stringent conditions.”

This alteration was made due to the illegality of creating and possessing CSAM. Consequently, AI developers and others will be prevented from producing such images during testing. Previously, authorities could only respond after AI-generated CSAM was uploaded online, but this law seeks to eliminate that issue by stopping the images from being generated at all.

The amendments are part of the Crime and Policing Bill, which also establishes a prohibition on the possession, creation, and distribution of AI models intended to generate child sexual abuse material.

During a recent visit to Childline’s London headquarters, Narayan listened to a simulated call featuring an AI-generated report of abuse, depicting a teenager seeking assistance after being blackmailed with a sexual deepfake of herself created with AI.

“Hearing about children receiving online threats provokes intense anger in me, and parents feel justified in their outrage,” he remarked.

The Internet Watch Foundation, which oversees CSAM online, reported that incidents of AI-generated abusive content have more than doubled this year. Reports of Category A material, the most severe type of abuse, increased from 2,621 images or videos to 3,086.

Girls are predominantly targeted, making up 94% of illegal AI images by 2025, with the portrayal of newborns to two-year-olds rising significantly from five in 2024 to 92 in 2025.

Kelly Smith, CEO of the Internet Watch Foundation, stated that these legal modifications could be “a crucial step in ensuring the safety of AI products before their launch.”

“AI tools enable survivors to be victimized again with just a few clicks, allowing criminals to create an unlimited supply of sophisticated, photorealistic child sexual abuse material,” she noted. “Such material commodifies the suffering of victims and increases risks for children, particularly girls, both online and offline.”

Childline also revealed insights from counseling sessions where AI was referenced. The concerns discussed included using AI to evaluate weight, body image, and appearance; chatbots discouraging children from confiding in safe adults about abuse; online harassment with AI-generated content; and blackmail involving AI-created images.

From April to September this year, Childline reported 367 counseling sessions where AI, chatbots, and related topics were mentioned, a fourfold increase compared to the same period last year. Half of these references in the 2025 sessions pertained to mental health and wellness, including the use of chatbots for support and AI therapy applications.

From Fun to Responsibility: Inspiring Young Gamers to Embrace Ethical Hacking and Cybersecurity

Video games have evolved significantly since their rise in popularity in the 1970s, leading to a remarkable surge in players. Today, there are around 3 billion gamers globally, with estimates indicating that over 90% of Gen Z engage in gaming for more than 12 hours a week. Contemporary gaming blockbusters are vibrant and imaginative, immersing young people in dynamic and expansive worlds they can explore and influence.

This burgeoning creative talent has caught the attention of criminals, who target children and teenagers within popular online games, transforming them into skilled hackers.

The financial and societal repercussions of cybercrime are staggering. It is predicted that global costs of cybercrime will reach: 12 trillion dollars by 2025. Moreover, research indicates that 69% of youth in Europe report having engaged in some form of cybercrime. In the UK, the last statistics released by the National Crime Agency in 2015 revealed that the average age for cybercrime suspects is 17, which is notably younger than for other criminal activities like drug offenses (37 years old).

“If you’re facing arrest at 17, it likely began around age 11,” states Fergus Hay, co-founder and CEO of The Hacking Games, an initiative aimed at helping young individuals channel their coding talents into legitimate paths. “This transition doesn’t happen instantly. Games are often the gateway that enables skill development and experimentation in a controlled setting. These young hackers are continually modifying and hacking games to exploit vulnerabilities.”

He further noted that social media platforms are integral, offering tools and steps for hacking while also fostering a desirable lifestyle and community belonging.

This challenge coincides with a notable uptick in serious cyber-attacks within the UK. The National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) recently reported a historic surge in large-scale cyber assaults. In the year leading to August 2025, GCHQ categorized 204 incidents as being of ‘national significance,’ an increase from 89 the prior year.

In response to these threats, Hay initiated the Hacking Games and collaborated with John Madeline, a cybersecurity expert, to realize a vision of “cultivating a generation of ethical hackers who will enhance global safety.”

“This is a generation of inherent hackers. They can either serve society positively or become a liability. If we can engage them, we can guide them towards becoming ethical rather than criminal hackers,” Madeline emphasizes.

The Hacking Games recently unveiled the HAPTAI platform, which assists in creating hacking aptitude profiles for youths by evaluating their performance in popular games and aligning those results with psychometric data. Subsequently, candidates are matched with suitable job roles and teams where they can flourish.

The projected global average annual cost of cybercrime is $23 trillion by 2027, fueled by threats from state entities and organized crime groups worldwide. These groups often seek out young individuals, steering them towards criminal activities.

For youths approached by these “cyber Fagins,” there is a lure of significant financial gain. Initial payments often come in the form of virtual currencies for gaming but can escalate to tens of thousands in real money or its virtual equivalent.

“When they identify talent displaying genuine hacking or game modification skills, they engage them under the guise of another youth, asking, ‘How would you utilize cryptocurrency?'” Hay explains. “Many are exceptionally bright, sometimes neurodivergent, employing games as a medium to push creative boundaries. They do not inherently possess a criminal mindset.”

The scale of the cybercrime issue in the UK has become increasingly evident over the past year, with businesses experiencing significant disruption and monetary loss. Major corporations, including Co-op, have reported losses amounting to millions due to hacking incidents, one of which saw four arrests as part of an ongoing investigation by the National Crime Agency.

Social Issues Behind Crime

As a socially conscious organization, Co-op is dedicated to community enhancement and has partnered with The Hacking Games to mitigate future cyber threats and foster opportunities for vulnerable youth.

“When they experienced a cyberattack, Co-op sought to understand the nature of the issue. Upon discovering underlying societal factors, they recognized their responsibility to grasp the root causes impacting youth and to collaborate with us to address these challenges, not just the technical aspects,” Madeline clarifies.

The Co-op has a longstanding tradition of community initiatives addressing issues like social mobility and isolation. Together, Co-op and The Hacking Games aim to establish a pilot program within the Co-op Academies Trust across Northern England. Sponsored by Co-op Group, the Trust encompasses a network of 38 academies with around 20,000 students, including primary, secondary, special schools, and universities, dedicated to guiding aspiring hackers towards legitimate career trajectories.

For this pilot, students will be selected based on their interests in gaming and technology. Through interactive and creative sessions, participants will delve into the principles of ethical hacking and understand its crucial role in cybersecurity. The program will also highlight career education, with reputable industry partners introducing talented youths to the vast prospects available in this rapidly expanding domain.

“Our academy students’ curiosity about technology-related roles is on the rise, yet there is scant data regarding their home gaming environments and whether these interests extend to hacking,” remarks Joe Sykes, careers director at Co-op Academies Trust. “As educators, we must confront these challenges directly—this initiative will undoubtedly provide fresh perspectives and foster insights for students eager to explore these pathways.”

A Path to a Legitimate Career

Young gamers may find themselves simply altering game experiences without authorization or creating cheat codes to sell them on the dark web.

Some parents associated with The Hacking Games have only discovered their child’s online activities when asked about tax implications after their digital wallets reached $400,000 (£298,000).

“For the youth unsure about further education, many are starting to realize that substantial earnings can come from just a few keystrokes,” explains Madeline.

According to Hay and Madeline, it’s essential to engage young individuals before they stray too far, to identify their skills, recognize their potential, and integrate these into an educational framework that aims to fill the cybersecurity skills gap in the UK and globally—a concept Hay refers to as “intergenerational opportunities.”

“Many of these youths have felt marginalized in school and, at times, victimized. They possess a deep disdain for wrongdoers and bullies. If you understand their motivations, you can channel that into something positive,” he concludes.

They help us see potential everywhere—whether it’s arranging words into sentences, crafting paragraphs into books, or using paint to conjure visuals. Their work can shift our perspectives, impart knowledge, and even instill a sense of calm.

It’s backed by science: 2024 survey commissioned by the British government highlights that engaging with art not only boosts physical and mental health but, as Sarah Carlsberg notes, “reduces healthcare costs and increases national productivity.” Recently, King’s College London reported that out of 50 participants aged 18 to 40 who viewed paintings, there was a 22% decrease in stress hormones. (In contrast, those who viewed digitally exhibited only an 8% reduction.)

No matter our situation, art and artists will always guide us. I’ve embraced the wisdom of creatives—whether for inspiration, reflection, relationship insights, or daily organization. This has led me to compile 366 short passages of daily wisdom into a new book titled how to live an artistic life.

Featuring insights from artists like Tracey Emin and Marina Abramovic, alongside writers like Ali Smith and Iris Murdoch, each entry includes reflections, rituals, encouragement, and creative exercises. The book follows the seasons (with January focusing on Beginnings, February on Love, August on Beauty, and November on Memory), allowing me to respond creatively to the artists’ words and engage everyone in the act of creation.

I wrote this book during a time of feeling uninspired and distracted. The words of these artists helped me rise above that fog. Did you catch writer Patricia Highsmith’s habit of making her workspace “as enjoyable as possible” by lounging in bed surrounded by cigarettes, coffee, and donuts? Or art critic Jerry Saltz’s advice to engage with those next to you in a museum by asking, “What do you think about that?” Dialogue sparks ideas. Museums have always served as spaces for conversation, community building, and direct connections—many of which are free to access in the UK.

When feeling overwhelmed, author Hisham Matar and broadcaster Claudia Winkleman suggest focusing on just one artwork at a time. Return to it later and take note of how your perception shifts with your circumstances. As you change, so does the artwork. If visiting a museum isn’t an option, consider exploring art online or in books, share it with someone, and inquire about their thoughts. As Smith remarked, “Whenever you stand in front of art, you participate in it and awaken something within you.”

Why do we engage with art? Perhaps it resonates with Paula Rego’s thought expressed to her son, director Nick Willing: “An artist travels to places unseen and returns with something both novel and instantly familiar.”

Living an “artistic life” doesn’t necessitate becoming an artist. It’s about enhancing what you already possess. As Laurie Anderson reminds us in her December entry (focusing on joy), prioritize “the things that make you feel free and truly good.” While many wellness programs come at a cost, artists like Abramovic emphasize the value of stillness: “Doing nothing is the genesis of something.”

Be present in the world. Engage with people. Visit places, big or small. Look up at the sky, rather than yourself mediated through technology. Let’s reclaim our focus and turn it towards one another. The new year is a gift. Go forth, seize it, and live artistically.

Gamers as Hackers: Discovering the Next Generation of Tech Talent in Unexpected Places | Bridging Fun and Purpose

For numerous young individuals in schools and universities, a solid understanding of digital skills is essential for future learning and employment prospects. Nonetheless, teachers face a considerable challenge in ensuring these skills are utilized effectively.

As reported by The Hacking Games, an organization focused on helping youth with hacking skills secure jobs in the cybersecurity sector, criminal groups are increasingly targeting talented teenagers within popular online gaming spaces.

This is a route that educators hope to steer their students away from, which is why Co-op, a sponsor of the Co-op Academies Trust, has collaborated with The Hacking Games. The Co-op Academies Trust serves over 20,000 students across 38 primary, secondary, and special needs schools, as well as one college in Northern England. The partnership aims to direct students with coding skills toward careers in ‘ethical hacking.’

Joe Sykes, Careers Director at the Co-op Academies Trust, comments: “In recent years, there has been a growing interest among students in technology, particularly gaming, and they are investigating how this passion might lead to future careers.

“Through our engagement with The Hacking Games, we discovered the transferable skills that exist between gaming and ethical hacking, particularly within cybersecurity. Our students found this link to be both exciting and motivating.”

“Students will find it engaging to learn about the transferable skills between gaming and ethical hacking in the technology sector, especially in cybersecurity.”

Adam Woodley, Head of Curriculum at Connell Cope College, agrees, noting that many young individuals view careers in the digital sector as a “very popular option.”

“Students have acquired highly sought-after skills through hobbies such as gaming, and they naturally desire to apply these skills in exciting career paths,” he states.

“Thus, it is crucial that they have the chance to explore the stimulating realm of ethical hacking and cybersecurity and utilize those skills to benefit society.”

Rob Elsey, Chief Digital Information Officer at Co-op, concurs. “There are numerous unfilled positions in cybersecurity,” he points out. “The more we can transform the bright, skilled young individuals we have in the UK into defenders instead of attackers, and educate them about the available opportunities, the better. This will help us confront ongoing threats as a nation.”

Driving apprenticeships and internships

Fergus Hay, co-founder of The Hacking Games, emphasizes, “It takes a community to motivate, appreciate, and empower this generation to choose the right path.” The Hacking Games’ framework assesses young people’s digital aptitudes and skills against specific criteria to identify suitable careers for them in the tech industry.

The Hacking Games is actively working on creating formal pathways (apprenticeships and internships) to digital jobs within the government or private sectors in the future. Many experts believe this route is also accessible for neurodiverse youth. However, for both neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals, gaming serves as a common training ground for hacking, remarks John Madelin, a cybersecurity veteran and Chief Product Officer at The Hacking Games.

“Many hackers I’ve encountered are gamers,” he states, adding that most young gamers do not harbor criminal intentions, “but the distinction is significant.” For many young gamers, hacking revolves around discovering new and hidden aspects of gameplay, while for some, it involves creating and selling cheat codes to other players.

These advanced technological skills are precisely what criminal organizations seek to exploit, particularly among students less focused on academic achievement. However, Madeline asserts she can guide young hackers toward more positive paths. “It’s essential to continuously challenge and engage them,” he states. “Instead of allowing them to remain inactive, we should utilize their talents.”

The Co-op Academies Trust has already identified careers in the digital sector as crucial components of its post-primary career program. Mr. Sykes believes it is vital for all children to discern their strengths as early as possible. “Our duty as educators is to optimize outcomes in these areas.

“Individuals with strong digital skills often possess a natural inclination to think logically and solve problems creatively,” she adds.

“Blessed with a talent for technology and gaming.”

The collaboration between Co-op and The Hacking Games comes after Co-op became the target of a cyberattack earlier this year. Focused on creating social value, Co-op (an organization owned by its members rather than shareholders) sought to address the underlying causes of hacking.

“We recognize that children possess talents in technology and gaming, and that these skills can lead to hacking,” Sykes states. “Initiatives like this allow us to discuss the ramifications and legalities surrounding hacking and help students recognize the opportunities these skills can present through their ethical application.”

Potential roles in cybersecurity for major firms and organizations may involve identifying weaknesses that malicious hackers could exploit. There are also opportunities within government departments working against hacking attempts directed at critical national infrastructure.

This is one of the primary reasons The Hacking Games recently launched its HAPTAI platform. The platform aids in developing hacking aptitude profiles for young individuals by analyzing their performances in popular games and matching them with corresponding psychometric profiles. Subsequently, candidates are paired with roles and teams suited to their strengths.

Protection today, career path tomorrow

“Children can be particularly susceptible to online dangers, thus we ensure they are educated about these risks, including the legal boundaries surrounding online safety and hacking,” Sykes explains. “I believe all schools need to stay updated with current issues. This presents a real opportunity for professionals to enhance their understanding of the risks and communicate them effectively to parents.”

In the future, she envisions a national computer science curriculum that incorporates lessons on ethical hacking and PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic), helping all students recognize the potential harm at all levels of the economy.

Until that vision is realized, the partnership between Co-op and The Hacking Games will persist. The Co-op Academy Walkden will be piloted in the upcoming months to raise awareness of the issue and identify talented young individuals who can contribute to the solution before scaling it into a nationwide program.

“There are vast career opportunities in the digital arena,” states Sykes. “This ultimately aids students in understanding all the positive pathways available to them and how they can significantly contribute to creating a safer world.”

The Competition to Develop the Ultimate Self-Driving Car Heats Up | Technology

Greetings! Welcome to TechScape. I’m your host, Blake Montgomery, reaching out from Barcelona where my culinary adventures have, quite humorously, turned half of me into ham.

Who will lead the self-driving car industry?

The global rollout of self-driving cars is on the horizon. Next year, leading companies from the United States and China plan to expand their operations considerably and introduce robotaxis in major cities worldwide. These firms are akin to male birds strutting to attract a mate, setting the stage for upcoming worldwide rivalries.

On the U.S. front, we have Waymo, the autonomous vehicle initiative by Google. Over the last 15 years, it has invested billions into Waymo. After extensive testing, the company launched its robotaxi service for the public in San Francisco in June 2024, and has since expanded significantly. Waymo vehicles are now a common sight in most parts of Los Angeles, with introductions planned for Washington, D.C., New York City, and London next year.

On November 2nd, Chinese tech giant Baidu lodged a complaint against Google. Baidu claimed its autonomous vehicle division, Apollo Go, conducts 250,000 rides weekly, matching Waymo’s performance. Waymo recently hit a major milestone in the spring.

Most electric vehicles in China are priced significantly lower than their American counterparts, even without self-driving capabilities. Experts estimate that a single Waymo vehicle costs hundreds of thousands to manufacture, though exact figures remain unclear. “The hardware costs for our vehicles are much less than Waymo’s,” declared the CFO of Pony AI, a leading Chinese self-driving firm, to the WSJ.

To recoup its billion-dollar investment in Waymo, Google must persuade potential customers of its superior quality.

Google is highlighting transparency as a distinguishing factor. Much less data is accessible regarding Baidu’s vehicles, raising concerns about their safety records. Baidu asserts that its vehicles have amassed millions of miles without “a single major accident.” Google referenced this in a statement, posing a question about the extent to which the success of Chinese self-driving companies has been communicated to U.S. transportation authorities, as noted by the Wall Street Journal.

However, Apollo Go, which has unlocked taxis in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, is not Waymo’s only contender, as Gulf nations pursue diverse tech partnerships. Wheels from WeRide, another Chinese autonomous vehicle company, have made their way to the UAE and Singapore. All major players in the Chinese market are pursuing expansion into Europe, according to Reuters. Vehicles built by Momenta and deployed by Uber are slated to begin operations in Germany by 2026. WeRide, Baidu, and Pony AI are also gearing up to introduce robotaxi services in various European locations soon, leading to many more people encountering self-driving cars in their everyday lives.

Initially, the primary question concerning self-driving cars was: can we create a working vehicle? Now, the focus has shifted to: who will dominate the market?

Elon Musk’s loyal supporters push his wealth to $1 trillion

Tesla’s recent performance has been lackluster. The looming end of the U.S. electric vehicle tax credit has resulted in a surge of buyers at dealerships over the past few months, yet the company reported a 37% drop in profits in late October. This decline adds to a series of challenges facing EV manufacturers.

In spite of Tesla’s struggles, shareholders voted in favor of a plan to compensate Elon Musk $1 trillion over the next decade, contingent on his ability to elevate Tesla’s valuation from $1.4 trillion to $8.5 trillion. Should he succeed in this and other objectives, it would mark the largest reward in the company’s history.

The results of the vote were revealed during the company’s annual shareholder meeting in Austin, Texas, where more than 75% of investors backed the proposal. Enthusiastic chants of “Elon” filled the room following the announcement.

Since his departure from the Trump administration, Musk’s political endeavors have included wielding social media as a platform to influence the New York mayoral election and orchestrating a right-wing, AI-generated alternative to Wikipedia. He has expressed concerns over a “homeless industrial complex” of nonprofits purportedly harming California and declared that “white pride should be acceptable.” On X, he stated that Britain is on the brink of civil war and warned of the collapse of Western civilization.

The social and economic repercussions stemming from Musk’s political stance have not deterred his public support for the far right, and he has increasingly showcased these affiliations, all while maintaining in his characteristic obstinacy that being branded a racist or extremist is of no consequence to him.

Can you take on the data center?

The data centers fueling the AI revolution are truly colossal. Their financial scope, physical dimensions, and vast datasets encompass all, making the idea of halting their construction seem counterintuitive amid ongoing developments. Silicon Valley’s leading firms are investing hundreds of billions at a rapid pace.

Yet, as data centers expand, resistance is mounting in the United States, the UK, and Latin America, where these facilities are rising in some of the most arid regions globally. Local opposition typically centers on the environmental repercussions and resource use of such monumental constructions.

Paz Peña, a researcher and fellow at the Mozilla Foundation, focuses on the social and environmental effects of data center technology in Latin America. She shared insights with the Guardian at the Mozilla Festival in Barcelona on how communities in Latin America are filing lawsuits to extract information from governments and corporations that prefer to keep it hidden. From Play to Purpose: A Cautionary Tale on Cybercrime for My Teenage Self

In 2016, a 19-year-old Daniel Kelly faced charges for computer hacking, extortion, and fraud linked to a significant data breach at a British telecom firm, resulting in a four-year prison sentence. Post-release, he has collaborated with over 35 cybersecurity firms to create campaigns and thought leadership pieces.
The reality of digital threats.

As a teenager, gaming dominated my life. I spent upwards of 12 hours daily immersed in it. My focus was entirely on video games, as school didn’t captivate me and my offline social interactions were minimal. Gaming became my world, a means of escape, and my community.

Trouble began around 2011 or 2012 when I was competing in an online multiplayer game and experienced a sudden internet disconnection just before the match. It turned out that my opponent had managed to trace my IP address and launched a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack against me. This incident sparked my curiosity to understand how it was accomplished, leading me to an online hacking forum—not out of malicious intent, but pure curiosity.

Delving into video game cheating sparked my interest in the workings of websites, prompting me to learn about hacking web applications. I began reporting vulnerabilities to various companies and ultimately gained a position as a security researcher with Microsoft.

What deterred me from pursuing that path was the sense of futility I felt. At that time, formal bug bounty programs—incentives for responsible hackers who discover vulnerabilities—were non-existent, and many companies failed to grasp the concept of responsible disclosure. Consequently, those who reported issues were often ignored or even threatened. For a teenager yearning for acceptance and community, this was transformative.

From 2012 to 2015, things intensified. I forged connections on hacking forums, and the discussions gradually shifted from curiosity to darker topics. I found myself leaning towards cybercrime without fully realizing how far from my initial intentions I had strayed.

Following my arrest, I faced endless legal battles and delays while on police bail for four years.

My first prison experience was at HMP Belmarsh, an environment that felt chaotic and unpredictable. For the initial weeks, I remained hyper-alert—not from fear, but due to the atmosphere. Eventually, you adapt to the prison’s daily rhythm, which also forces you to deeply reflect on your choices. It wasn’t entirely negative, but it was certainly isolating.

The sensation of being liberated can be most simply described as “weird.” You expect freedom to be an emotional high point, but it’s often disorienting. After months or years of being told what to do and when, emerging back into society comes with the expectation of returning to normalcy. Adjusting took time; I had to reacquaint myself with making small decisions and rebuild my confidence.

My sentence included a Serious Crime Prevention Order, which I still abide by more than a decade later. It impacts nearly every aspect of my life, imposing restrictions on my technology use and online activities. The awareness that one misstep could lead to loss of freedom creates a constant tension.

Since being released, I’ve found a way to merge two realms I know intimately: cybersecurity and cyber threat intelligence. Many cybersecurity marketing teams lack technical skills, while many tech experts struggle to communicate their work to the public effectively. I’ve built a bridge between these areas. The same knowledge that once led me astray now serves as the bedrock of my business—an odd yet positive twist.

If you have talents but feel isolated, it’s easy to gravitate toward communities that seemingly accept you but ultimately lead you astray. During my youth, I attempted to apply my skills positively. Had there been a more structured and constructive avenue for young individuals to showcase their abilities, my trajectory might have been different. I wasn’t predisposed to commit typical crimes; it was indeed a valid case where no one intervened to guide my potential for legal use. This lack of guidance combined with innate talent can be hazardous.

Fergus Hay, founder of The Hacking Games, aims to reshape the narrative surrounding hacking from one viewed solely as criminal to one seen as constructive when applied correctly. The partnership between Co-op and The Hacking Games offers young minds an outlet to hone their digital skills toward ethically sound careers—precisely the preventative approach we need. As a member of The Hacking Games Virtue Community, I strive to guide the next generation in avoiding my past mistakes and using their skills for societal protection.

I would advise anyone passionate about technology to not overlook the opportunities that come from being open about your learning journey. The Internet can connect you with individuals who recognize your potential and provide opportunities. The essential aspect is to focus your energy on mastery rather than mischief. Be mindful of the motives of those around you. If someone suggests that laws are irrelevant or that all laws are inconsequential, it’s a warning sign. The boundary between curiosity and crime can blur quickly without guidance.

My thoughts on what advice I would give my younger self continue to evolve. The obvious response would be, “Please don’t.” Yet, the reality is that everything I experienced has fundamentally shaped who I am and my current endeavors.

Still, I would advise my younger self, “Don’t cross that line.” Avoid threatening or extorting businesses—that remains my greatest regret. I’d also emphasize the importance of considering the outcomes and realizing how many lives are impacted by rash actions. While curiosity itself isn’t wrong, the way it was wielded was flawed.

Younger Game Development Stars Feel Like ‘Props’ at the ‘Oscars of Games’

Video Games have faced ongoing challenges with diversity and inclusion, making it unsurprising when Game Awards host and producer Geoff Keighley unveiled the Future Class program in 2020. The initiative aimed to spotlight individuals in gaming as part of a “bright, bold, and inclusive future” for the industry.

Considering the vast audience of the annual Keighley-led show, which garnered around 154 million livestream views last year, Future Class appeared to be a sincere attempt at fostering change. Hall of Fame inductees were invited to the prestigious December ceremony, often referred to as the “Oscars of Gaming,” and featured prominently on the official Game Awards website, with promises of networking and career development. However, reports indicate that the program faced difficulties from the outset, with support waning in recent years. It now appears that the Game Awards Future Class may have been entirely abandoned.

This marks the second consecutive year without any new Future Class members being announced. Typically, the program sees 50 inductees from various sectors of the gaming world, including writing, development, journalism, and community management. According to a report by a game developer, organizer Emily Weir stated, “We’re not planning a new Future Class.” [2025] There are currently no active plans for Future Classes.

Former Future Class inductees express that this outcome follows years of advocacy to enhance the program. As the video game industry navigates a cultural clash surrounding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives (DEI), some Future Class members feel they were leveraged for positive portrayals and then abandoned when DEI initiatives lost momentum.

“We were essentially props,” game producer Deanna Lora, who joined the inaugural Future Class in 2020, recounted during a video call. “At the Game Awards, most people had come from far away due to the costs, and I felt sidelined. I later learned that Casely was hosting a party in another room with influencers and industry leaders. Do you know where the Future Class gathered that day? At Starbucks.”

“No one from the official leadership attended until the meet and greet was nearly over,” said Future Class member and Retcon Games creative director Jess Negron, reflecting on the Starbucks gathering. “We felt quite let down.”

At the 2021 ceremony, Lora, community manager Natalie Czech, podcast host Kalief Adams, and other Future Class members found themselves seated behind a camera riser, effectively blocking their view of the event.

Future Class inductees receive program benefits for a year, including tickets to the Game Awards (alumni were offered discounts on ticket purchases) and access to career advancement opportunities. Many noted that the early-career-focused event primarily featured discussions with notable industry figures like former Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aimé and Xbox head Phil Spencer, rather than a comprehensive mentorship program.

“It felt like Keighley gathered some friends for a Zoom call,” Lora remarked. “While those conversations were thrilling, that was pretty much the extent of it.”

Lora was among several Future Class members who urged Keighley and Weir to enhance the program.

“They had everything the 2023 class received: a Future Class mixer;” commented Emma Kidwell, a writer who joined in 2023, about past inductees. “All the benefits we’ve gained are due to our previous classmates. They arranged for hotel stays and covered our flights… Everything we’ve received is thanks to our former peers.”

However, 2023 also saw a significant conflict between Future Class and Casely, which members believe may have hastened the program’s decline. In November, over 70 Future Class members signed an open letter advocating for a statement supporting Palestinians and calling for a ceasefire, given the heightened media focus on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The letter requested this statement be read at a December ceremony. Despite receiving media attention, the letter shared on the Future Class Discord, which both Keighley and Weir are part of, was ignored.

Shortly after, several Future Class members presented a virtual address to Keighley and Weir, acknowledging the program’s significance but voicing concerns about its “goals, structure, and sustainability.” They provided suggestions for enhancing both the program and the awards ceremony, such as incorporating more female presenters, improving accessibility, and recognizing recent mass layoffs in the industry. Younes Rabi, a Hall of Fame inductee from 2022, reported that Keighley appeared visibly frustrated during the discussion, while another member described him as “furious.”

Keighley and Weir did not respond to requests for comments.

All interviewed Future Class members expressed various levels of dissatisfaction with the program’s abrupt conclusion. Accessibility consultant Steve Thaler lamented, “It’s unfortunate that it was part of something meaningful with great individuals and was left in limbo.” He continued, “I’m not angry; I’m just disappointed.” Many speculated that the program’s disbandment was a result of inductees advocating for a superior Future Class. “You have influence, you can drive changes,” Lora highlighted. “However, since we challenged the status quo, it seems the sentiment became, ‘This is too challenging; it would be better to keep the peace.’” Czech added, “Due to our advocacy for ourselves—given that we were inducted—we faced repercussions for pushing for the same changes the organization publicly commended us for.”

Several members pondered whether sponsorships linked to the program (a video introducing the 2023 Hall of Fame inductees was sponsored by Old Spice) meant they were effectively being “tokenized” to boost revenue. (The cost of a one-minute trailer for Keighley’s 2024 Summer Games Showcase was reportedly $250,000, with sources estimating the Game Awards will incur even higher costs.) “They didn’t acknowledge us at the 2022 Game Awards, and while we’re not well-known, we certainly didn’t receive financial support, other than the sponsorship they supposedly secured under the Future Class name,” Negron said.

At one point, the Future Class page disappeared from the Game Awards site. This action eliminated any official record of members. “Not only did they cancel the program, but they also erased our means to claim the honor we were previously awarded,” Czech said.

While one sign alone might not be serious, a combination of them can be concerning.

Mary* faced these warning signs firsthand. “I had a son engaged in hacking on the darknet. He isolated himself and avoided sleep. I truly had no clue about his activities,” she shares. “After consulting a cybersecurity expert and discussing my challenges, I discovered he was attempting to delve into the cryptocurrency world on the darknet at just 13 years old.”

A Transformative Path for Neurodivergent Youth

Particularly for neurodivergent youth, engaging with games and spending time online can yield significant advantages in terms of socialization and emotion regulation. Yet, it’s crucial to recognize that with these benefits come potential drawbacks, including the considerable risks of internet or gaming addiction and the associated allure of cybercrime.

Just as you would inquire about who they play with at a park, ask the same about their online friends. Be vigilant for warning signs like strangers trying to befriend them, offering freebies, or inviting them to unfamiliar worlds or games, as these could indicate grooming.

3 Take proactive measures. Pay attention to age ratings for games, which are significant. The best way to ascertain what is suitable for your child is to play the game together or at least observe them while they play. Remember, just like in Call of Duty, children can also be recruited in games like Minecraft. Games with community or “freemium” options can entice young players seeking extra income through in-game purchases or upgrades.

4 Monitor for warning signs such as social withdrawal, excessive gaming, lack of sleep, unusual tech purchases, and multiple email accounts.

5 Engage with your child’s school. Consult their computer science teacher to learn how they promote digital responsibility. Teachers often have insight into which students may require specific support to enhance their skills.
