11 futuristic visions from old inventions: From carrier pigeons to self-cleaning homes | Lifestyle

“Things can only get better,” D:Ream promised, but they were wrong, as were most people throughout history who tried to predict the future.

But that hasn’t stopped us from trying, and some visionaries have been quite successful. Leonardo da Vinci also envisioned a helicopter and a refrigerator. Joseph Granville suggested in 1661 that lunar travel and communication using “magnetic waves” might be possible. Civil engineer John Elfreth Watkins, writing in 1900, predicted mobile phones, prepared meals, and global digital media (“Photos can be sent via telegram even if you are far away. If there were a battle in China in 100 years, a snapshot of that most shocking event would be in the newspapers an hour later.”). Visionary American cartoonist Arthur Radbaugh in the late 1950s to early 1960s, through his series Closer Than We Think, introduced ideas like wrist-worn televisions, robot-run warehouses, and bloodless surgery.

Many of these predictions, however, turned out to be inaccurate. Watkins believed he could eradicate mosquitoes and the letters C, X, and Q. Radbaugh imagined a colony of monkeys in space riding a hamster wheel-shaped “unicycle” vehicle. Most futurists simply added imaginative touches to existing technological advancements. It requires a great deal of creativity to envisage a truly different world.

Perhaps that is why more outlandish events occur in fiction. Jules Verne’s book Paris in the 20th Century, written in 1860 but not published until 1994, foretold a world with copy machines, techno music, and individuals who view art degrees as foolish. HG Wells took it further (or deeper) by imagining the atomic bomb.

What people anticipate often reveals more about their aspirations and anxieties than the actual future. Predictions tend to surge around significant dates and momentous global occurrences, reflecting contemporary concerns. The rapid technological advancements of the 19th century gave rise to new uncertainties as well as hopes, and the future they envisaged mirrors this duality (women’s pursuit of happiness also emerges as a recurring theme). The 1960s vision encompasses the space race and the “sky’s the limit” enthusiasm that promotes a sense of boundless possibility – alongside the fear of the Cold War and the quest for viable alternatives in case nuclear annihilation renders life on Earth untenable. The reality tends to lie somewhere in between these extremes, but the list of people who have been anticipating the apocalypse for the past millennium serves as a peculiar consolation for those who believed in cataclysmic events involving fire, flood, comet impacts, or the Antichrist. Hey, we’re still here (for now).

It’s a whimsical retrospective vision of the future. So let’s hop off the hoverboard, ask the kangaroo butler, and start with the roast dinner pill.

The imaginative stride of cartoonists is remarkable. Much more captivating than reality. An enormous steam-powered horse emitting smoke; a vacuum tube transport to Bengal; a flying whale gargoyle ferrying convicts to New South Wales in style; a refuse collector biting into a whole pineapple; a postman with elegant wings – it’s bewildering. Heath believed the future would be kinder and more user-friendly. That, to me, signifies progress.

French author and illustrator Albert Robida, in his “Twentieth Century” trilogy created in the 1880s and 1990s, predicted video conferences, doorbell cameras, pneumatic tube transport systems like hyperloops, industrialized food production, and a world polluted with “pathogenic ferments” clogging its rivers. The test tube baby seems a tad on the nose, but the image of a toddler scientist concocting this idea makes me wish they had invented something like ibuprofen instead.

The German Hildebrand chocolate company produced trading cards in the late 19th century envisioning various marvels of the future: buildings that could be moved on rails by steam engines, aquatic penny-farthings, summer holidays in the North Pole. Unfortunately, these might only become a reality in about 30 years from now. I won’t name names, but there are a few cities in the UK that could definitely benefit from a rainproof glass roof (cough, Manchester cough).

While imagined visions of future transportation frequently depict crowded skies with flying vehicles, road traffic continues to remain tediously earthbound (barely enough space for a two-lane road, I tell you). Robida presented a sleek, almost animalistic driverless vehicle approach. I, however, appreciate the comical impracticality of this airship traffic jam. You can easily tell it’s French from the man’s gesture on the far left. They sure threw this at me at numerous Gaulish crossroads.

They depict scenarios like underwater hippopotamus and seahorse rides, a bus pulled by whales, and scientists investigating giant, menacing “microorganisms.” I chose this specific piece illustrating how the laziest woman in the world would prefer to conduct her nightly errands. Ransomware group issues warning that UK state is not profitable target | Cybercrime

A groundbreaking study by the Institute for Work think tank has revealed that exposure to new technologies like trackers, robots, and AI-based software in the workplace has a negative impact on people’s quality of life.

Conducted through a survey of over 6,000 individuals, the study focused on the health impacts of four categories of technologies that are increasingly prevalent in various industries.

The research found that increased exposure to technology in areas such as AI, machine learning-based software, surveillance devices like wearable trackers, and robotics had a detrimental effect on the health and well-being of workers.


On the other hand, the use of established information and communication technologies (ICTs) such as laptops, tablets, and instant messaging at work had a more positive impact on well-being.

The report highlighted that frequent interactions with ICT improved quality of life, while interactions with new technologies in the workplace had the opposite effect.

Economists at Goldman Sachs estimated that by 2030, 300 million jobs worldwide could be automated, with many roles being fundamentally transformed due to developments in generative AI.

Lead author Dr. Magdalena Sofia emphasized that the issue lies not in the technology itself, but in how it is implemented and utilized.

On the other hand, the UK has extended its ban on new petrol and diesel cars, while the situation in the EU regarding electric car sales remains below par. Stavanger, Norway’s third-largest city, stands out as an oil hub that has made significant strides towards zero-emission transport through initiatives like electric buses and vehicles.

The man accompanying me, Harald Nils Rostvik, an architect and urban planning professor, has been a driving force behind Norway’s electric vehicle revolution for decades. His pioneering efforts date back to the introduction of one of Norway’s first electric cars in 1989, marking the beginning of a journey towards sustainable transportation.

At Westfield High School, a 14-year-old girl and her friends were targeted with abuse through the distribution of fake nude images created using artificial intelligence.

Dorota, aware of the power of this technology, was surprised by how easily the images were generated.

An investigation by The Guardian’s Black Box podcast series revealed the origins and operators of an app called ClothOff, which was used to create the explicit images at Westfield High School.

I was never attracted to men, but I spent enough time in gay environments in the 70s to convince me of that. During adolescence and beyond, I didn't know how to construct a masculine identity. Over the years, by necessity, I have come across as saturnine, intelligent, a little aloof, a little wolfish, perhaps “eccentric” and, despite my best intentions, very close to asexual. Another reason for my repression was the feeling that if I changed my gender, it would erase everything else I wanted to do in life. I wanted to be an important writer and I didn't want to be pigeonholed into a category. If I were transgender, that fact would be the only thing anyone would know about me. Over the years, transgender people have become increasingly visible in the media, and coverage has become a little less cruel. I lived in New York City, so I saw a lot of transgender people. I had been friends with photographer Nan Goldin for a while, but he never spoke to me, even though I'm sure he would have understood what I was saying.

Sometimes I would hear rumors about this or that person being “dressed up,” and as a result, I became forever uncomfortable in their presence – out of envy, of course. My office in the late '80s and early '90s was located a block away from Tompkins Square Park in the East Village, where I attended Wigstock, the annual Labor Day drag festival. 2024 BAFTA Game Awards: Baldur’s Gate, Spider-Man, Alan Wake lead major nominations

The British Academy has announced the nominations for the 20th BAFTA Game Awards, to be held in London on April 11th.

Topping this year’s list is Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3, which earned 10 nominations. Spider-Man 2 has 9 nominations. Alan Wake 2 has 8 nominations. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Star Wars Jedi Survivor each have six nominations. Hi-Fi Rush, a colorful music-based action game from Japan’s Tango Gameworks, earned five nominations, as did Mintrocket’s blockbuster Dave the Diver.

Since 1998, Bafta has celebrated the creative achievements of video games alongside those of the film and television industries. Formerly known as the Bafta Interactive Entertainment Awards, the Bafta Games Awards were launched as a separate event in 2004. The awards are decided by a combination of Bafta’s professional members and selected expert judges, with the EE Player’s Choice award determined by public vote.

At last year’s awards, retro-style indie monster shooter Vampire Survivors surprised everyone by beating blockbuster contenders Elden Ring and God of War: Ragnarok to win the award for best game. This year’s nominees include the blockbuster RPG Baldur’s Gate, the horror thriller Alan Wake 2, Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, PlayStation’s Insomniac Games Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Dave the Diver, a humorous game where a sushi chef hunts his own fish.

Changes to this year’s awards process include giving members an additional three months to vote and publishing a shortlist of 60 games. Bafta’s Director of Awards and Content Executive Emma Baehr emphasized the diversity of the nominations, which also featured several first-time developers. “We’ve seen some big-budget games, with Baldur’s Gate leading with 10 nominations, but we’ve also seen British indie game Viewfinder with four nominations,” she noted. She added, “Eleven of the 12 performers in the performance categories are first-time nominees, and we look forward to welcoming them to the British Academy.”

The eerie and enigmatic instruments driving the soundtrack of Alan Wake 2

The website of Petri Alanko, a BAFTA-nominated Finnish musician who works as a video game and film composer, describes the artist and performer as “Deadline since 1990.” “I’ve never been late,” he boldly claims. If you’re a creator of any genre, you’ll probably read this article with a mixture of awe, suspicion, and disbelief. Deadlines are flexible, right? right?

“It’s not a boast. It’s more or less a promise of service,” Alanko laughs. “I’m good at scheduling my work, but I’m very cautious when interacting with others for the first time. Even if I help the client understand what they need, everything Not every client knows exactly what they want. But what does that look like? For Alanko, that meant dropping a piano off a forklift, lying on an ivory keyboard with a sex toy, tinkering with a custom-built “fear engine,” and playing with Mega Marvin, a “giant cowbell with sticks and sticks.” It was to play with devilish instruments (springs). Made famous by disturbing films such as The Witch and the Lighthouse, the AppHension Engine was once called “the scariest instrument of all time” by Brian Eno. Stephen King had a visceral reaction when he first heard this game in action (which is quite appropriate considering how closely Remedy’s “New Weird” games align with King’s work) But for Alanco, it was the key to solving the mystery. The dark and hostile atmosphere that Alan Wake 2 needed to evoke in his place.

“I can tell you it’s a tough thing to master, let alone play,” Alanko smiles when asked about this strange instrument. “Imagine the most frightening of any musical instrument, all rolled into one, whose sole purpose is to make sound. Noise contains some tonal content. Sometimes it’s true, sometimes it’s not, and usually they seem to do whatever they feel like doing. It’s often said that if you spend 10,000 hours practicing your instrument, you’re good to be a performer. In Apprehension Engine, it’s even less so. You start out in complete emptiness and stay there for a long time. A spring reverb tank, a clanking resonant metal rod, two string necks, a few strings, and a nickel harper. It’s a crank, electronic bow, active mic, and heavily distorted preamp all rolled into one.”

In short, it’s a “wonderful nightmare” and “almost on par with Alan Wake 2.” It just oozes fear. Balancing uneasily on the barrier between the familiar and the hellish, the Apprehension Engine effortlessly evoked everything Alanko needed for his Remedy game. This distorted sense of reality pulled the writer away from the real world and into a fever dream of his own creation, a limbo. There is a risk that it will spread to the real world as well.

It was important to Alanco to aurally mimic Wake’s mental breakdown. The character is something of a chimera between Alanco, lead writer Sam Lake, lead writer Clay Murphy, and director Kyle Murphy, who share more similarities than “we would care to admit, or perhaps could admit.” I’m sharing it with everyone. It was crucial to empathize with Alan and capture the sonic experience of his descent into (and descent from) madness.

“How I perceive writing music for my darkest emotions and mental states on Alan Wake 2 has to do with my early adulthood experiences and occasional personal struggles. ” says Alanco. “Fortunately, my experience is due to the environment and the general situation, and not due to the use of substances, for example.” But earthquakes can still cause fatalities. It takes a highly empathetic person to write a character who suffers from an unstable mental state.

Alanko’s dedication to his craft is evidenced by a full-sleeve tattoo of another bout of remedies he scored, “Control.” He said he already has ideas, drafts and concepts for what Alan Wake 3 will sound like. “As long as my heart is beating, I’m in this,” he says. “Music is very important to me.”

BT abruptly disconnected my landline despite my protests and refused to provide a refund.

I’m at a loss to understand how my BT landline and Wi-Fi could be disconnected without the company receiving any instructions from me.

I’m a 79-year-old widow who lives 11 miles out of town and relies on Wi-Fi to order medication from my GP, groceries, and many other things.

I received a phone call out of the blue from someone who appeared to be a scammer, and on October 6th, I was told that BT was “sad to be leaving.”

I denied doing any such thing. I then received a letter from BT asking me to settle my bill as I would be made redundant on October 20th. I called and protested, but it still didn’t work. Disconnected.

I have now spent a lot of time and money calling BT from my mobile and now here I am after several months with no solution. There’s no real explanation as to how the initial error occurred or why I can’t reconnect.

I also got a warning from one of them Employees, you may not be able to get back the same phone number you’ve had for 23 years. My neighbor is letting me use his Wi-Fi, but it’s illegal.


It’s understandable that you’re upset about this experience of having no landline or internet for more than three months.

We tracked BT, only to discover that your fate is accidentally intertwined with your nearby neighbor in the Herefordshire countryside. When setting up a new contract, an incorrect address was retrieved and the connection was dropped.

BT says: hardware I’ve experienced it. Our complaints team has identified the address discrepancy. They fixed this and reconnected her service.

“We offered compensation for the delay and she accepted this as a resolution to her complaint.”

Nevertheless, you are angry that no one listens when you tell BT that you are not canceling the contract, and that the contract could be terminated by someone else’s careless actions.

Review of Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley – Explore the Enchanting World of Tove Jansson in This Game

I I have a bad cold, but I felt better after watching Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley. This is the game’s equivalent of honey, lemon, and a hot water bottle, full of deliciousness and warmth. But it’s also strange and melancholic, an iconic mark of Moomin and part of the reason for the enduring popularity of Jansson’s work. It’s weird, sad, creepy, wholesome, and fun.

The plot follows Snufkin, a philosophical wanderer, preparing to return to Moominvalley in the spring and meet his best friend Moomintroll after the Moomins wake up from hibernation. However, he finds his way blocked by a park patrolled by police. The administrators of Hemulen Park have decided to extend their powers to build gardens throughout Moominvalley, managed according to strict signposted rules. Enraged by this unjust natural enclosure, Snufkin begins tearing up his sign. And in a tempting logic, once all the signs are gone, the cops just walk away because there are no more rules to enforce. This allows Snufkin to freely rewild the area, tearing up paving slabs and dismantling fences.

Snufkin was an eco-warrior long before the word was coined.

That was also strangely sad. Most of the time, the characters seem too wrapped up in their own neuroses and obsessions to ever truly be happy, but I’m sure they can overcome their traumas and differences and somehow manage to get along. That fact is what makes this world so uplifting. In that sense, the choice of Sigur Ros for the uplifting yet melancholic soundtrack is an inspiration.

The melodies of Moominvalley are simple and non-challenging, but they are disappointingly short, so you can see almost everything in a day’s play. Still, it’s all so carefully put together that it’s hard to begrudge these shortcomings. It’s all about licensing. Tove’s short stay in his faithfully recreated version of Jansson’s strange and memorable world is worth the price of admission.

Every review I read about Pacific Drive emphasizes how attached the reviewer becomes to their rickety old car, their sole companion on this enigmatic journey. They gradually repair and enhance the car with better parts and Ghostbusters-like gadgets to navigate the challenges of the outside world.

It’s more akin to the affection one might hold for their favorite mug or childhood bicycle. I presumed this idiosyncrasy was unique to me until I delved into other individuals’ encounters with Pacific Drive, only to discover that others, too, have cultivated a peculiar fixation with virtual cars. It’s both reassuring and engrossing to hear about.

Evidently, humans have been forging emotional connections with game elements since antiquity, so perhaps it’s not as eccentric as it initially appears.
