Amelia Earhart, one of aviation’s most famous pioneers, is renowned for being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. However, her story tragically ended in 1937 when her Lockheed 10-E Electra plane vanished during an ambitious round-the-world flight.

Why science recommends abstinence for a healthier life over moderate drinking

In a dry January of 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued an alcohol statement pouring warm, stale lager, based on the idea that no matter how much alcohol you drink, it’s good for your health. There is no such thing as a safe drinkit was written.

But most drinkers have also likely heard that small amounts of alcohol can have certain protective effects, such as reducing the risk of arteriosclerosis and lowering insulin resistance.

Of course, “moderate drinking” is a subjective measure. In the UK, this means between 7 and 14 units of alcohol per week (14 units is the equivalent of six pints of beer or one and a half bottles of wine). Belgian guidelines state that drinking 21 drinks a week for men and 14 drinks a week for women is “low risk”. So why did the WHO decide that consuming alcohol in any amount is bad?

Science discovers oldest known tadpole fossil dating back 161 million years.

The part of the skeleton that supports the gills suggests that the specialized filter-feeding anatomy of modern tadpoles had already evolved in this fossilized tadpole, Chubar said.

The similarities between ancient and modern tadpoles are so great that the researchers were even able to determine the developmental stage in the fossils, concluding that they were just about to undergo metamorphosis into frogs.

The rules state that no more than three people can share the award, but this does not explain why Lee was left out of the winning duo of Lubukun and Ambros. Additionally, donations cannot be received after death. Otherwise, Ms. Franklin, who died of ovarian cancer in 1958 at the age of 37, might have received the donations by now.

Of course, such issues are not new, and it seems unlikely that the Nobel Prize committee will deviate from the wishes of its sponsors, but that is no reason to ignore diversity. The committee needs to cast a wider net, not just for the sake of fairness, but if it wants to ensure that the awards continue to be taken seriously.

The British sense of humor is cherished among Brits, but it’s natural to assume that many British jokes may be embarrassing to other cultures. There is an interesting point to consider here – humor is not universal. What one finds amusing is not inherent, but rather cultural.

Humor differs significantly from laughter, which is a common experience for all human beings, even the grumpiest ones. Laughter is much easier to comprehend and study scientifically.

For instance, TV producers have long understood that incorporating a pre-recorded “laugh track” can make people perceive something as funnier compared to when they don’t hear that laughter (I’m Looking at You, 90’s Sitcom). However, neuroscientist Robert Provine found that jokes are not even necessary. In a study conducted in 2013, Provine solely played the laugh track, which surprisingly was adequate to induce laughter in nearly all participants.

Provine’s groundbreaking research on laughter involved observing it in real-world settings rather than just in a lab. Observing people laughing in public, he empirically proved that individuals are significantly more likely to laugh in the presence of others than when alone, approximately 30 times more likely. Moreover, laughter is not necessarily a response to finding something funny but serves as a form of social communication, indicating a positive, nonthreatening interaction.

Laughter is not exclusive to humans; it is observed across the animal kingdom. For example, apes enjoy being tickled and vocalize their enjoyment while playing. Kea parrots are known for their playful behaviors and have distinct calls to amuse others. Additionally, mice produce ultrasonic giggles when playing. Rats tickled regularly by their owners exhibit immediate laughter upon the owner’s arrival, displaying excitement for playtime.

13,000 years ago, humans had to come up with creative ways to survive in icy environments. Recent studies suggest that their solutions were more inventive and brutal than previously thought: Ice Age hunters likely used weapons to impale prey such as mammoths and sabre-toothed tigers.

This discovery could potentially resolve a long-standing debate regarding the purpose of ancient tools known as Clovis points. These sharp rocks, made of materials like chert and flint, have been found throughout the United States in various sizes. While it was initially believed that Clovis points were used as spear tips by skilled hunters for hunting large animals like mammoths and bison, a new study suggests a different perspective.

Published in the journal PLoS One, the study conducted by archaeologists from the University of California, Berkeley proposes that these weapons were used to ensnare and wound charging animals, and possibly even defend against sabre-toothed cats.


So how did this hunting method work? Hunters likely positioned the sharpened spear in the ground at an angle, allowing the animal’s momentum to drive the spear deep into its body upon impact. This innovative technique provided a strategic advantage in hunting large animals, making it more effective than traditional spear-throwing.

“This ancient Native American design represents a significant advancement in hunting strategies,” stated Scott Byrum, a contributing researcher. John Myers, the lead author of the study, emphasized the importance of understanding ancient survival techniques that have been utilized worldwide for millennia.

To validate their findings, the researchers conducted experimental simulations of the hunting technique in addition to analyzing historical records and literature. This process led to a better understanding of how Clovis points were used to hunt mammoths during the Ice Age.

Recreating this ancient hunting technique through experimental models enabled researchers to gain insight into the effectiveness and practicality of pike hunting. Byrum and his team aim to further test their theory by creating a simulated mammoth to assess the durability and impact of the Clovis point.

This method of impaling prey, known as pike hunting, has historical precedence in warfare and hunting practices. During the Ice Age, this technology was crucial for survival as it allowed hunters to reuse their weapons and avoid the challenge of finding suitable materials for crafting new spears in harsh winter conditions.

By discovering how Clovis points were utilized in hunting, researchers have shed light on the coexistence of early humans with large extinct animals. This new perspective highlights the innovative strategies employed by ancient hunters and deepens our understanding of human history.

When you search the hashtag “mental health” on TikTok, you’ll come across a plethora of videos discussing “shadow work.” These videos have collectively amassed over a billion views and contributed to the success of The Shadow Work Journal, written by former TikTok employee Kayla Shaheen.

Despite its peculiar nature, the shadow work trend is actually a modern interpretation of a concept introduced by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung in the mid-20th century.


Jung, a colleague of Sigmund Freud, shared Freud’s belief in the significance of the unconscious mind in human psychology. One of Jung’s theories about the unconscious posits that everyone has a “shadow” self – a part of us comprised of characteristics we fear or dislike. He referred to it as the “shadow” to signify its dark and undesirable nature that we can’t escape.

Jung suggested that our shadow self is revealed when we speak or act thoughtlessly, and it can also manifest in our dreams.

The purpose of shadow work is to delve deeper into understanding your shadow self, learn from it, and integrate it into your being. By doing so, you can feel more authentic and whole as your shadow is a genuine part of who you are. Jung argued that the shadow possesses valuable attributes like raw power and insight, which can enhance creativity, personal understanding, and resilience when expressed.

Shadow work involves introspective exercises to connect with your shadow. For instance, Shaheen recommends spending time in a quiet, dimly lit space, listening to your inner voice, and reflecting on the words that come to mind.

Visualization exercises are also common in shadow work, such as imagining two doors leading to your ideal self and your shadow self, and envisioning the experience of walking through each door.

While some therapists appreciate the increased interest in self-reflection, others are concerned that the portrayal of shadow work on social media lacks depth and may not fully capture Jungian psychology. Additionally, for individuals with traumatic backgrounds, reflective practices may trigger distressing emotions best addressed in a therapeutic setting.

For skeptics, Jung’s theory, like Freud’s, lacks empirical evidence and may potentially harm individuals by attributing distressing thoughts to a supposed part of themselves.

Forty minutes into my job at Integrity Bank, anxiety hits me. This is how a normal day starts. This time, it's for a wedding and final exams, but it's neither a wedding nor an exam. From here, I can see the cathedral. The window is to my left, and I sit with four other contractors at the end of an oval table. We're on the top floor, 15th floor. There's no scorching sun yet, but that will come later. Despite the skylight being open, the air conditioning in the room is controlled. My first encounter with Michael Mosley was at the BBC Summer Party. A recent documentary I had presented had just aired on horizon, making me eligible to attend the event. Feeling overwhelmed amongst the many celebrities present, I found solace at the bar, quietly observing the crowd, until Michael approached me.

“Hello, I’m Michael Mosley,” he introduced himself. I was well aware of who he was, and we ended up spending the evening conversing. Although I first worked with Michael at an event, that initial meeting at the party left a lasting impression on me. Despite not knowing me, he warmly welcomed me as a newcomer.

Michael’s extensive career as a producer, presenter, and writer at the BBC spanned over 40 years, establishing a unique style of ‘self-experimenting presenter’ in science presentations. He famously delved into self-experimentation, including infesting himself with tapeworms and popularizing the 5:2 intermittent fasting diet to manage his type 2 diabetes.

While Michael faced criticism for his methods, he aimed to communicate science rather than conduct formal experiments. His talent for simplifying complex concepts and making science accessible led to widespread education among audiences.

Personally, Michael served as a valuable mentor, offering practical advice and sharing techniques for effective communication in broadcasting. His influence extended to shaping my approach to interviews and on-camera presentations, guiding my work in academia and beyond.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of clear science communication has been highlighted, emphasizing the impact of effectively disseminating information on health issues. Michael’s contributions in this realm have greatly improved public health outcomes and potentially saved lives.

As a close colleague, respected mentor, and cherished friend, Michael Mosley will be deeply missed.

Keanu Reeves: 'A pioneer who transcends genres'

This month is packed with big names in science fiction, including the release of Keanu Reeves' debut novel, the latest from one of Britain's top science fiction writers, Adam Roberts, and a quantum novel from Pen Shepherd.

The one I'm most excited about is Mateo Askaripour This great hemisphereBut it's a mix of science fiction and political thriller, and highly recommended. Perfect holiday reading for late July. Zero stars, not recommendedmany vacationers go a little Lord of the Flies When the sun shines at a luxury resort, it's the perfect time to relax.

According to the publisher, this is a collaboration between “two pioneers across genres,” with Keanu Reeves BRZRKR A comic book immortal soldier wants to die – “a tall, thin man who peers at them from beneath his long dark hair” – and is clearly a Reeves likeness – and a US covert operations group says they'll grant his wish to die if he helps the team first.

I’m a big China Miéville fan, so I’ve already read a few of them (if you haven’t already, Embassy Town Grab a copy as soon as you read it, it's a very clever, moving piece of sci-fi, and of course, I’m a huge Reeves fan, because… Keanu Reeves.

But I had to put the book aside because it was too glamorous for me to continue reading. I might start reading it again though, because if I can't believe in Neo, who can I trust? Maybe I need to get in the zone.

Okay, I'm definitely going to do this. Not only does it sound super interesting, but Roberts' acting is undoubtedly great. This time around, we have two spaceships orbiting a black hole. The crew of both ships are killed within the same afternoon by Captain Alpha Rayne, who is told to do so by a voice emanating from the black hole. This voice is the rather charmingly named “Mr. Modo.” Of course, no one believes Rayne, but something seems to be emanating from within the black hole.

Set in the future, this novel tells the story of a young woman who, after being relegated to second-class citizenship, sets out to find her brother, whom she believed to be dead but is now a suspect in a high-profile murder case. Publishers have compared it to works by N.K. Jemisin and Naomi Alderman, and an early review on book trade site Kirkus called it “an engrossing page-turner about a future made all too real by an unsettling present.” It sounds interesting, and I’m definitely interested to give it a read.

This sounds very interesting. It is set in a near-future world where cancer is on the verge of being eradicated thanks to a new technological cure in which all the cells in the body are replaced with “nanites” – robotic cells that cure the sick, in fact making the patient nearly immortal.

We follow Young-hoon, a literary scholar who has not only created a machine that can think, but is also undergoing a new form of nanotherapy and much more. The book promises to explore “the nature of intelligence and the unexpected consequences of progress, the meaning of humanity and life, and what we should really fear about technology and the future.” It's a lot for a novel, but I’m up for the challenge.

The Edge of Solitude is set on a ship heading to Antarctica.

The eco-thriller is set “in a time of severe climate crisis” on a ship heading to Antarctica to hopefully save the region. On board is Ivy Cunningham, a disgraced environmental activist trying to salvage her reputation but also beginning to question the motives of her fellow passengers and the project as a whole.

“Unprofessional underachiever” Dan Foster is vacationing at an island resort when the sun suddenly explodes. As temperatures drop and a revolution begins, he must choose between saving himself and the other guests. Paradise coming to an end? I'll be there!

Marsh, 45, wasn’t happy with where her life was headed, from her career to her marriage to her relationship with her teenage daughter. So when she got the chance to be the star of a TV game show, she was stunned. All this and moreIn “Happy Happiness”, a game that uses quantum technology to allow participants to travel back in time, she gets it. But as you can imagine, even though she gets everything she wants, it all starts to feel a little strange and Marsh begins to ask herself if it was worth it. This is another one for my holiday reading. I love a “live happily ever after” story and when you add time travel and quantum magic dust to the mix, it's amazing.

This new novella is The Red Scholar's Trail is a space opera with a twist of martial arts. Set in an outer space known as the Hollow, home to the mysterious and terrifying Tanglers. When the Tanglers escape, they must be captured before they destroy a civilian city. Two young men from rival clans tasked with stopping the Tanglers find themselves developing feelings for each other.

Featuring characters ranging from a boy trying to bring the natural world back into urban life to a ballet dancer trying to inhabit the consciousness of a mouse, the collection offers us a “kaleidoscopic view of the climate crisis,” the publishers promise (why, at the moment, it’s unclear, but I’d like to know).

Science has proven the most effective method for cutting a sandwich

It is commonly believed that cutting a sandwich diagonally to create two triangles is the best way, but there is limited scientific evidence to support this claim.

One theory suggests that the triangular shape allows for the first two bites to be taken from a 45-degree corner, which has crust on only one side, making it easier to access the center of the sandwich where the filling is most concentrated.

After eating the corner, take 1-3 bites diagonally, missing the crust. Depending on the size of the sandwich, you may be left with an additional small triangle.


Ultimately, each triangle will become a single 90-degree chunk of crust. However, cutting the sandwich into rectangles would result in two crust corners on each half.

Another reason for cutting sandwiches into triangles is that they are easier to eat. Starting at one of the corners leads to a cleaner bite, and the 45-degree angle of the triangle maximizes the engagement depth.

If taken to the extreme, cutting the sandwich into four triangles allows for a neat eating experience in three bites.

This cutting strategy is often used at children’s parties, though kids might not always start with the 45-degree corner. In such cases, simply cutting off the crust altogether may be the best option.

Do plants possess intelligence? | Science News

When goldenrod is eaten by herbivores, it adapts its response based on whether other plants are nearby. Are such flexible, real-time adaptive responses a sign of plant intelligence?

In the context of behavioral ecology, plant responses to environmental stressors are increasingly being studied. This is especially true for plant responses to herbivores, which mediate direct and indirect defense and tolerance. These seemingly adaptive changes in plant defense phenotypes in the context of other environmental conditions have prompted discussion of such responses as intelligent behavior. In their paper, Kessler and Mueller explore the concept of plant intelligence and some of its predictions regarding chemical signaling in plant interactions with other organisms. “There are over 70 published definitions of intelligence, and even within specific fields there is no consensus on what it is,” says chemical ecologist Professor André Kessler. Cornell University.

“Many people believe that intelligence requires a central nervous system, and that electrical signals act as the medium for information processing.”

“Some plant biologists equate the plant's vascular system with a central nervous system, arguing that there is some centralized entity within the plant that allows it to process and respond to information.”

But Kessler and his colleague, Michael Mueller, a doctoral student at Cornell University, disagree.

“Although electrical signals are clearly seen in plants, there is no solid evidence of any homology with the nervous system, but the question is how important they are to the plant's ability to process environmental signals,” Professor Kessler said.

To make the case for plant intelligence, the authors narrowed the definition down to its most basic element: the ability to solve problems toward a specific goal based on information obtained from the environment.

As a case study, Kessler points to previous research looking at goldenrod and its response to being eaten by pests.

When beetle larvae feed on goldenrod leaves, the plant releases chemicals that let the insects know the plant is damaged and a poor food source.

These airborne chemicals, called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are also absorbed by nearby goldenrod plants, causing them to develop their own defenses against the beetle larvae.

In this way, goldenrod attracts herbivores to nearby areas, dispersing damage.

In 2022, Professor Kessler and his co-authors Experiments were conducted To show that Solidago altissima They can also detect a higher proportion of far-red light reflected from the leaves of nearby plants.

If nearby plants are feeding on goldenrods by beetles, the goldenrod will grow faster in an effort to withstand the herbivores, but it will also start producing defensive compounds that help the plant fight off the pests.

In the absence of neighboring plants, plants do not accelerate their growth when eaten, and their chemical response to herbivores is significantly different, but they can still survive a significant amount of herbivore attack.

“This fits into our definition of intelligence: plants change their standard behaviour in response to information they receive from the environment,” Professor Kessler says.

“Neighboring goldenrods also become intelligent when they detect VOCs that signal the presence of pests.”

“Volatile emissions from nearby areas are a harbinger of future herbivore occurrence.”

“They can use cues from the environment to predict future situations and act accordingly.”

“Applying the concept of intelligence to plants could generate new hypotheses about the mechanisms and functions of plant chemical communication and may even change people's ideas about what intelligence actually means.”

“The latter idea is timely because artificial intelligence is a hot topic right now. For example, at least for now, artificial intelligence doesn't solve problems toward a goal.”

“Artificial intelligence is not even intelligent according to our definition of intelligence. Artificial intelligence is based on patterns it identifies from the information it has access to.”

“The idea that interests us comes from mathematicians in the 1920s who proposed that plants might function like beehives.”

“In this case, each cell acts like an individual bee, and the whole plant resembles a hive.”

“That means the plant brain is the whole plant, without any central coordination.”

“Instead of electrical signals, chemical signals are transmitted throughout the superorganism.”

“Work by other researchers has shown that all plant cells have a wide range of light spectrum recognition and sensory molecules to detect very specific volatile compounds emanating from nearby plants.”

“They can sniff out their environment with great precision, and as far as we know, all cells can do that.”

“Cells may be specialized, but they all recognize the same things, communicate through chemical signals, and trigger collective responses in growth and metabolism.”

Science debunks 7 common myths about your reality

Our perception of reality is quite limited because we evolved on the African plains 3 million years ago. Our senses were shaped to help us survive in that environment, with eyes that can detect approaching predators and ears that can hear the rustling of grass.

Although our senses have given us a basic understanding of the world, they also deceive us at times. The majority of nature remains hidden from us, and things are not always as they appear.

Here are a few examples of things that seem obvious but are not necessarily true:

1. The Earth is flat

2. The stars revolve around the Earth

It may seem logical that stars move around a stationary Earth, but evidence such as artillery deviations and the Foucault pendulum disproves this. The invention of the pendulum provided physical proof of the Earth’s rotation.

3. Living things are designed to suit their habitats

The apparent design in nature is often attributed to mutations and natural selection rather than intentional design. DNA plays a crucial role in the adaptation of organisms to their environments.

4. Your time is the same as everyone else’s

The Surprising Benefits of Running Slower for a Longer, Healthier Life – Here’s the Science behind It

Slowing down isn’t typically a priority for runners. From elite athletes to casual runners, the focus is usually on speed, personal records, competition, and pushing limits.

However, the concept of slow running has gained popularity recently. It’s not just a trend promoted by social media influencers, but also endorsed by coaches, runners, and scientists.

What are the benefits of running slowly?

The idea is that running at a slower pace can actually yield faster results in terms of exercise benefits.

“For example, running slowly can lower your resting blood pressure and strengthen your heart,” says Professor Dan Gordon. “It still challenges the body but without the need for excessive stress to achieve cardiovascular improvements,” adds Jonathan Myers, an exercise physiologist at Anglia Ruskin University.

Running slowly is typically defined as a pace where you can comfortably hold a conversation. It’s an effort level of 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being a sprint. This type of exercise, known as “Zone 2 exercise” in sports science, is considered to be a sweet spot for promoting longevity and overall health.


A study in Copenhagen found that light and moderate joggers had lower mortality rates than non-runners and intense runners. Vigorous joggers did not show significantly different mortality rates from non-runners.

Running slowly is beneficial for heart health, enhances metabolic functions, and improves mental well-being. It can prevent metabolic diseases, improve insulin sensitivity, and boost mitochondrial density in cells, leading to improved energy utilization.

Improved mental and physical health

Slow runners experience faster recovery, reduced risk of overtraining-related fatigue and injuries, and generally feel better overall.

“Slow running has a positive impact on mental health and social well-being,” says Gordon. “It allows for social interactions, which can motivate individuals to stay active and enjoy the process without pressure to perform.”

What we’re starting to realize is that you don’t need intense stress on your body to see cardiovascular benefits.

Gordon believes promoting slow running in groups can encourage more people to stay active consistently, as the social support can enhance motivation and enjoyment of the activity.

More Gains, Less Pain

Contrary to the belief that speed is essential for improvement, researchers suggest that slow running can yield significant results. Elite runners, for example, often perform majority of their training at a slow pace to build a strong aerobic base and enhance cardiovascular efficiency.

This concept of an “Aerobic Base” emphasizes the importance of improving cardiovascular capacity to enhance overall running performance. By running slowly, you can increase endurance, speed, and efficiency while reducing exertion.

In summary, slowing down not only improves longevity but also enhances running abilities in the long run.

This gas originates from the air we breathe, the liquids we consume, and the bacteria in our digestive system. Our bodies expel this excessive gas through the mouth and anus. Sometimes, the gas may be released without notice, in small amounts, and without any detectable odor.

Unlike cows, methane is not the primary component of human farts. Therefore, when someone ignites a fart, it usually burns hydrogen gas.

Farting is a normal bodily function, but if you notice an increase in farting frequency, it may be due to an underlying medical condition.


Why do we fart?

Farting occurs because there is gas in our intestines that needs to be released.

A mixture of swallowed air and gas produced by digestive bacteria in the intestines eventually needs to be expelled through burps and farts.

The main gases in flatulence are hydrogen and carbon dioxide, while the unpleasant odor often comes from sulfur compounds present in small amounts.

Nerve endings in the anus help distinguish between gas buildup and solid stool, allowing gas to pass through without any issues.

Does everyone fart?

Every individual, without exception, passes gas through the large intestine due to swallowed air and intestinal bacteria. This gas mainly consists of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, methane, and trace amounts of smelly compounds.

Although everyone farts, some individuals may be more discreet about their flatulence.

Why do I fart so much?

It is normal for some people to fart more frequently than others. According to NHS, the average person farts between 5 and 15 times a day. However, certain medical conditions can lead to excessive farting.

Farting can be a symptom of conditions like celiac disease and lactose intolerance, as well as issues like constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastroenteritis.

If you are concerned about your farting frequency, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

The groundbreaking project aiming to decipher and potentially reverse menopausal age

From the moment you begin as an immature egg in your grandmother’s womb, your fertility journey is limited. However, scientists at Cambridge University may soon change that reality in their bright labs.

Dr. Staša Stankovic is one of these scientists. Her research at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge has uncovered valuable data in the field. Now, Stankovic is focused on unraveling the mysteries surrounding fertility and menopause.

Women’s ovaries hold a finite supply of eggs that represent their fertility. Stankovic compares this concept to an hourglass, where the sand (eggs) can only flow in one direction until it runs out, signaling the onset of menopause.

“In science, we aim to control the hourglass’s middle part,” she explains. “Our goal is to limit the eggs’ loss over time, preserving the highest quality eggs for as long as possible.”

Working with a team for five years, Stankovic is developing a method to predict the natural fertile period and age of menopause with 65% accuracy, aiming for 80% accuracy in clinical practice.

Additionally, the team is exploring potential drug solutions to address infertility and potentially delay menopause. The onset of menopause is influenced by the ovarian reserve and the rate at which eggs deplete over a woman’s lifetime, typically occurring around age 50 with fewer than 1,000 eggs left.

For women experiencing early menopause or premature menopause, these drug treatments could be life-changing.

Researchers are studying genetic factors using a blood sample rather than physical examinations to understand how genes impact fertility and menopause.


The research team analyzed data from over 200,000 women in the UK Biobank, which provided insights into menopause, fertility, and overall health metrics. This data will help researchers make connections with other health outcomes like dementia and diabetes.

By identifying over 300 genetic variations linked to menopause, researchers foresee potential solutions for ovarian diseases and early menopause using drug interventions.

Stankovic cautions against relying solely on IVF and egg freezing as magical solutions, emphasizing the need for more effective treatments with higher success rates.

Effects of Delaying Menopause

The research team is hopeful about developing infertility drugs that not only address symptoms but also regulate ovarian function. While the drug’s availability is estimated within the next decade, rigorous testing and validation are still required.

The team’s focus is on identifying crucial genes, conducting testing in ovarian models, and formulating drugs that maintain egg quality and quantity as women age.

Ultimately, the goal is to delay menopause and extend reproductive lifespan. Preliminary studies on mice have shown promising results, but further research is needed before human trials can begin.

Aside from fertility benefits, delaying menopause could also impact women’s overall health, offering insights into various diseases associated with menopause.

Despite various theories proposed over the years, explanations range from natural phenomena like methane bubbles to supernatural causes like parallel worlds.

Some suggest that methane bubbles from the ocean floor caused ships to capsize, but research has shown no significant methane emissions in the area in the past 15,000 years.

The frequency of hurricanes in the region could have led to disasters before accurate weather forecasts were available, resulting in ships sinking due to high, rough waves.

While some blame magnetic anomalies for navigation errors, no such anomalies have been observed, though the alignment of true and magnetic north may have caused confusion in the past.

Despite the lack of identified dangers by the U.S. Coast Guard, and no statistically unusual number of incidents in the Bermuda Triangle, the mystery persists due to early reports receiving widespread attention.

Modern technology has enabled better tracking of air and sea traffic, reducing the sensationalism surrounding the Bermuda Triangle in recent years.

Exploring the Potential of Graphene: A Revolutionary Material in Materials Science

Sir Colin Humphreys, a materials science professor at Queen Mary University of London, pointed out that the main issue lies in the difficulty of producing graphene on a large scale.

He explained that the original method of creating graphene was not conducive to mass production and that significant investments by companies like IBM, Samsung, and Intel have been made to develop scalable production methods.

Recent advancements in manufacturing techniques show promise for the resurgence of graphene technology. Companies like Paragraph are now producing graphene-based devices in large quantities.

Unraveling the Intriguing Science Behind Face Yoga

Get Ready for the Ultimate Solar Eclipse Science Experiment!

In April, a total solar eclipse is expected to occur, promising great scientific success thanks to new spacecraft, telescopes, and cosmic coincidences.

The upcoming eclipse will feature the Moon very close to Earth, resulting in a prolonged period of darkness, and an anticipated increase in solar activity with possible dramatic plasma bursts. Additionally, densely populated areas from Mexico to America to Canada will witness this phenomenon.

During the eclipse, citizen scientists among the tens of millions of spectators will assist NASA and other research groups in studying our planet and stars. They will capture images of the sun’s corona as the moon blocks sunlight for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds on April 8. The atmosphere will witness calm among birds and animals as darkness envelops midday. Other activities include measuring temperature drops, monitoring clouds, and using amateur radio to assess interruptions in communications.

Simultaneously, a rocket carrying scientific instruments will be launched into the ionosphere near the edge of the universe. This launch, from Wallops Island, Virginia, aims to study the electrically charged region of the atmosphere during the partial solar eclipse, obscuring 81% of the sun. NASA’s high-altitude jets will also be deployed with improved telescopes to observe the eclipse’s effects on the sun’s corona and surrounding dust.

Various scientific activities will take place along the eclipse path across different locations. More than 600 weather balloons will be launched for live-streamed atmospheric studies by university students, irrespective of cloudy skies. The eclipse will provide a rare opportunity to observe the sun’s corona, which is usually hidden by its glare, and offer valuable insights into the corona’s extreme temperatures.

The eclipse will traverse through several U.S. states, into Canada, and finally exit into the Atlantic Ocean. Scientists are looking forward to the event to gather valuable data and insights, especially with the heightened solar activity compared to the 2017 eclipse. With new spacecraft studying the sun and advanced scientific instruments in place, April’s solar eclipse promises a wealth of scientific discoveries.

This eclipse, passing through U.S. radar sites monitoring space weather, will offer a unique opportunity for scientific observation closer to home.

Fifteen new active asteroids discovered in Citizen Science Project

Active asteroids behave dynamically like asteroids, but exhibit coma like comets. These objects are poorly understood, and fewer than 60 have been identified to date.

Active asteroids appear to have comet-like tails, but they follow orbits primarily within the asteroid belt.

Near-Earth asteroid (4015) Wilson-Harrington, the first active asteroid with a prominent tail, was discovered in 1949.

Fewer than 60 asteroids have been confirmed to be active in the past 70 years, a small fraction of the 1.3 million known asteroids, and the majority of discoveries have occurred in just the past 25 years.

Launched on August 31, 2021, the project is hosted on the Zooniverse online platform and has over 8,300 volunteers.
